The Trip (2021)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_trip_2.jpg

An unhappy couple, actress Lisa ( Noomi Rapace ) and her director husband Lars (Aksel Hennie), go to their cabin in the woods with a view to kill each other. However, once there, events spiral out of their control.

A Norwegian Netflix movie that premiered in November 2021.

Major spoilers follow . As the film depends heavily on twists and reveals for its impact, spoilers are unavoidable . If you want to keep your surprise, watch the film first, then come back here. You Have Been Warned .

  • Awful Wedded Life : Lisa and Lars were planning to kill each other and can't stop arguing even when they're in mortal danger.
  • Bad Actor, Good Liar : Lars calls Lisa a terrible actress and she apparently failed to get away even from a traffic ticket due to her lies being unconvincing. She still manages to play the trio of criminals to do all her whims before they realise what's going on .
  • Big Damn Heroes : Lars father escapes his care home to see what's up in the cabin. Once there, he effortlessly takes the situation under control and subdues remaining convicts . While it doesn't last, the commotion and his initial success is more than enough to sway the hopeless situation.
  • Black Comedy : A couple decides to solve their marital issues by murdering each other. Hilarity Ensues .
  • Blood Knight : Lars' father is actually glad he goes out in the blaze of glory .
  • Creator Couple : In-universe and somewhat downplayed - while they don't work together, Lars is a director and Lisa is an actress.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death : Petter ends up with his arm minced by a propeller screw, then a bag of stones is put on his neck and drags him overboard and to the bottom of the fjord .
  • Dead Sparks : The marriage between Lars and Lisa is going so bad, they are both planning to just murder the other during the weekend trip and collect the insurance.
  • Depraved Homosexual : Dave is implied to be serving time for rape, while in the same time happens to be a homosexual. He's this close from raping Lars over a pool table and takes great pleasure, even laughing, just from the fact how scared and broken Lars ended up being due to it .
  • Dumb Blonde : Roy is an idiot, to put it mildly. Meanwhile Lisa exploits the perception against the gang in the cabin .
  • Dumb Muscle : Both Victor, a caretaker Lars hired as an accomplice, and especially Roy, the neo-nazi escaped prisoner, are dummies that are mostly useful due to their strength. While it's implied Victor has some disorder, Roy is a straight-out moron .
  • Everybody Loves Blondes : Lisa dyed her hair blonde in an effort to get more roles.
  • Lisa's friend wishes Lars good hunting, confusing him. As part as her alibi, Lisa described their weekend trip as going hunting .
  • The cabin's alarm doesn't work. Roy smashed it with a rock a day prior .
  • Lars steps on cornflakes in the kitchen, clearly confused about the mess. Roy made it when raiding the kitchen .
  • Lars can't find his favourite sweater, the one he always wears when working in the cabin. That's because Dave is wearing it instead of his prison uniform .
  • Lars is squeamish about touching raw meat. He hired Victor to "carve up" Lisa after she's dead and make disposing of the body easier .
  • Gag Penis : He's not called "Horse-Cock" Dave without a reason.
  • Both Lars and Lisa want to collect the others insurance after the murder. In case of Lars, he has to also pay off Victor , which quickly escalates into an additional conflict.
  • Lisa managed to negotiate hers and Lars' safety by offering the three convicts money she has supposedly stashed in her bank account .
  • Hunting "Accident" : Lisa's plan for the weekend.
  • Informed Ability : Inverted. We are told repetitively that Lisa is a two-bit actress and one bad enough she can't even talk her way out of a speeding ticket. She still managed to play the trio of criminals like fiddles, without any of them ever knowing better .
  • Karma Houdini : Victor's death is being put on the tab of the escaped convicts, leaving Lars free of any charges .
  • Knee Capping : Lars' father knee-caps Dave with a shotgun, despite Dave using Lisa as a hostage. When Dave finally drags his way inside and bandages his completely busted knee, Lars shows up and stomps on the knee, breaking it inwards .
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste : In the end, Lars and Lisa realise they can still pay their debts and get away with killing Victor. They heavily sensationalise their case, make bunch of appearances in talk shows, write a book and keep the topic hot for long enough to get a movie adaptation out of their mis-adventures, directed by Lars and with Lisa playing herself .
  • Made of Iron : Roy takes just absurd level of abuse before being finally killed, while almost constantly having upper hand on due of Lars and Lisa .
  • Mood Whiplash : It's for the most part silly Black Comedy ... and then there is Lisa being threatened with rape and Lars almost taken by force , which instantly kills any semblance of comedy.
  • Nice Mean And In Between : Dave, Petter and Roy. Keep in mind that Dave is a rapist homosexual and Roy a dumb neo-nazi and yet they both combined aren't anywhere near as evil or hurtful as Petter .
  • Retired Badass : Lars father is currently living in a care home, but used to be a soldier and then part of Norwegian resistance during WW2. Now he's a resentful old man that wishes he died back then, in the glory of combat, rather than needing a pair of crutches to even walk.
  • Running Gag : A card saying "X days prior" when showing some crucial event or past development. It eventually deals with fractions, too.
  • The Sociopath : Petter has infamous criminal reputation as someone that even killed his partners from a heist. When prodded about it, he explains that all men have their value and once that value is reduced to zero, there is no point keeping them around. Within the frame of story, he abandons the knee-capped Dave, for he has "no value now". If all of this wasn't enough, he's a brutal killer that sees nothing wrong with getting rid of people standing on his way .
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome : The "death by lawn mower". While Lars' father ends up badly injured, it didn't actually kill him and the engine quickly stopped on his clothes. It's the impaling knife wound he received prior that makes him bleed out and die .
  • Take That Us / Ascended Meme : In the end, when Lars is directing a film adaptation of their exploits, his part is played by a black actor . It's a joke on the "Netflix adaptation" meme, where color-blind casting is a norm - and this movie was made by Netflix.
  • Tap on the Head : All the time. Lars gets electrocuted with a taser, Lisa gets knocked out by a gun not once but twice, and they both get knocked out cold by the falling roof.
  • Til Murder Do Us Part : A mutual version. Lars and Lisa are both planning to kill each other to get money and end their marriage.
  • Toilet Humor : Roy gets diarrhea after eating wild berries and ends up taking a dump in the attic, much to displeasure of Petter and Dave. Then the shit falls on Peter's face in the finale, making him even more pissed .

Did you know

  • Trivia There is no credited writer. Majority of the film is improvised.

Rob : You could have a costume drama here, couldn't you?

Steve : I would love-I'd absolutely-I'd just love to do a costume drama in these hills, leaping, vaulting over dry stone walls with a scabbard, with that dead look in my eyes, 'cause I've seen so many horrors that I'm sort of immune to them, and I'd say something like, "Gentlemen, to bed! Gentlemen, to bed, for we leave at first light. Tomorrow we battle, and we may lose our lives. But remember: death is but a moment. Cowardice is a lifetime affliction."

Rob : Nice.

Steve : To bed, for we rise at daybreak!

Rob : Very good. Very impressive.

Steve : But they always, they always leave at daybreak. They never leave at, you know, nine-thirty. "Gentlemen to bed, for we leave at nine-thirty!"

Steve : Ish. "Gentlemen to bed, for we rise at... What time is the battle? About, oh, twelve o'clock? Twelve o'clock. How is it on horseback, about three hours? So we leave about eight, eight-thirty?"

Rob : Eight-thirty for nine.

Steve : "Gentlemen, to bed! For we leave at eight-thirty for nine. And we rise at just after daybreak. Seven-thirty, so just after daybreak. Gentlemen to bed, for we leave at nine-thirty on the dot. On the dot."

Rob : Do you want to have a run, sire, in the morning? Just to loosen up, sire.

Steve : Yes.

Rob : Another thing they never say is, "Right! Well! We'd better make a move. I want to get back in daylight. We'd better make a move."

Steve : To bed! Tomorrow we ride! We leave at ten-ish.

Lisa and Lars are a couple whose marriage is on the rocks in The Trip. So to fix things they head off to a cabin for the weekend. The problem is that their idea of "fixing things" is to kill each other. That is until they are faced with an even bigger danger in this dark humour action movie.

All married couples have their ups and downs. The longer you're together the greater the chance of a bit of friction. However, few ever get to the place that Lisa and Lara are at in The Trip .

A Norwegian movie, The Trip is also known as I onde dager which means “For worse” – as in “For better and for worse…”. It is co-written and directed by Tommy Wirkola of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and Dead Snow fame so there's plenty of fun and blood and equal measure as our couple embark on a weekend getaway to fix their marriage.

Actually, that's not strictly true. They are heading off for the weekend and both think that killing the other will fix their marriage. Lisa is played by Noomi Rapace ( Close ) and Aksel Hennie plays her husband Lars. This dysfunctional couple have hit a rocky patch where they basically hate each other so a trip to a cabin in the woods to reconnect is the order of the day.

They waste no time setting up elaborate plans to kill each other but before either can complete the deed they encounter three escaped prisoners that have been hiding inside the cabin. They obviously don't want to get caught and despite wanting to kill each other, neither Lisa or Lars actually want to die so it's every man for himself in a bid to survive.

The Trip is a really well made dark comedy. Think Tarantino and the Coen Brothers – you have all the blood, splatter and fighting of one with the edgy humour of the other. The style works seamlessly and both Noomi Rapace and Askel Hennie are brilliant in this violent but very funny action thriller.

  • Great Well Rounded Characters
  • Great Blend of Humour and Action
  • Could Have Been A Bit Shorter

We all try to build masterpieces on the beach when armed with a bucket and spade. But these monuments are a different class. Created all over the world, these jaw-dropping sand sculptures are inspiring. From the tallest sandcastle to a recreation of the lost city of Atlantis, get ready for the most incredible sandy creations of all time…

A hefty sprinkle of fairy tale magic lands on the shores of Ostend during the Disney Sand Magic Festival. The 2017 event on Belgium’s sandy coastline celebrated Disneyland Paris’ 25th Anniversary. Thirty-two expert sand sculptors used a total of 6,350 tons of sand to create 150 different sand sculptures over five weeks that depicted characters and scenes from the entertainment brand – pictured here is a reimagination of the French park's Disney castle.

Incredibly true-to-life and larger-than-life sand creations of characters from Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars films were also on display at the popular seaside event, such as Marvel's Doctor Strange. The artists use only sand and water to build their intricate and towering works of art.

Imperial palaces, lavish temples and formidable emperors formed part of the grandiose display at a sand festival held in Lednice, Czech Republic, in 2015. Pictured here is the Chinese Emperor Qin, the first sovereign emperor, who was the work of artist Michal Olšiak and his team. With a theme of ancient China, sand replicas of the Terracotta Army and the Forbidden City were also created.

Surreal sand art takes over the sands of Busan in South Korea in May during its annual Haeundae Sand Festival which sees international artists get to work on Haeundae Beach. This ethereal sculpture is by the artist Zuo Zhang at the 2019 festival and is called the Scent of Music. The country’s second-largest city, Busan has glorious sandy beaches, perfect for making sandcastles and it's hoped the event can return in 2022.

Another eye-catching work of sand art at the 2019 Busan-based festival was this the Wonderful Wizard of Oz model. The detailed representation of the Emerald City and characters were the creation of five Korean artists.

An arresting nativity scene graced St Peter’s Square at the Vatican in 2018, made all the special by the fact it was made entirely from sand and water. It was the work of sand artist Rich Varano and three sculptors: Radovan Zivny, Susanne Ruseler and Ilya Filimontsev. The impressive team used 720 tons of sand sourced from Jesolo near Venice. The sculpture was 18 feet (5.5m) high and 52 feet (16m) wide.

<p>Inspired by the Middle Eastern folktale collection, <em>One Thousand and One Nights</em>, this epic sand “village” was on display at the Remal International Festival in Kuwait in 2014. The magical world reportedly covered an area of 322,917 square feet (30,000sqm) and used more than 31,000 tons of sand. As well as grand domed palaces, minarets and traditional little villages, the sprawling artwork included fearsome snakes, a giant genie and gruesome skeletons. This architectural masterpiece was part of the annual Belgium Sand Sculpture Festival in 2019, which takes place on the beach of Ostend. Working under a theme of “dreams”, international sand artists converged at the annual event to create fantasy worlds using sand and water alone. There were 150 works on the beach, which ranged from just over six feet (2m) to 20 feet (6m) in height.

This epic scene of the legendary lost ancient city of Atlantis was carved by artists Sandis Kondis and Sue McGrew as part of an Under the Sea sand sculpture exhibition held in Frankston on the Mornington Peninsula in 2013. With its gorgeous sandy beach, foreshore boardwalk and pier, Frankston is prime sandcastle-building territory. Although, amateurs are unlikely to reach the heady heights of this imposing sand sculpture.

<p>More competitive sand sculpting takes place at the Revere Beach National Sand Sculpting Festival which is held on the sands that overlook Massachusetts Bay. The world’s best sand sculptors converge at the beach, just north of Boston, during the annual event to compete for cash prizes. Pictured here is Benjamin Probanza’s Escuchando La Vida Y La Muerte (Listening to Life and Death) from the 2013 event. <p>Filmmaker Danny Boyle’s Armistice beach memorial Pages of the Sea was one of the nationwide visual arts projects of remembrance commissioned for the centenary of Armistice Day (the end of the First World War) on 11 November 2018. The striking visual arts project saw large-scale portraits carved into the sand on 32 beaches around the country – pictured here is a portrait drawn on Downhill Beach, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, of British Army staff nurse Rachel Ferguson who lost her life in Bordighera, Italy, in 1918. The portraits were chosen by Boyle to tell the stories of the ordinary people who gave their lives to the war effort.</p>

Sand Hotel, Weymouth, England, UK

Nobody likes sandy bed sheets, but that was par for the course for anyone checking in to the world’s first sand hotel, which was built on Weymouth Beach in Dorset. Guests were able to book the room (which had one double and a single bed) for around £10 per night for one week in the summer of 2008. It was part of a campaign by laterooms.com to highlight the appeal of a British seaside beach vacation and took 1,000 tonnes of sand to build.

<p>The Dutch took the idea a few steps further in 2015 by building real-life sandcastle hotels complete with multiple rooms, Wi-Fi, windows and roofs. Constructed from tons of sand and reinforced with the help of some wood, the hotels opened in the cities of Oss in the province of Brabant and Sneek in Friesland, both of which host annual sand sculpture contests. Guests could stay inside the rooms, which were hidden inside huge and elaborate castle sculptures, for $176 per night. The temporary structures were inspired by Scandinavia’s Ice Hotels.</p>

This detailed biblical scene portraying Jesus' last supper was created as part of Rügen’s 2020 Sand Sculpture Festival. It was one of many incredible motifs at the event that had a theme of the Bible. Noah’s Ark and Jesus carrying the cross were also part of the stirring sand sculpture display. The island’s annual festival usually attracts around 200,000 visitors every year.

<p>But the Germans’ world sandcastle domination was soon to crumble away. They were pipped to the post this year by Dutch designer Wilfred Stijger who constructed the world's tallest sand sculpture in Blokhus, Denmark. Towering above the little seaside town at just over 69-feet (21.16m) high, the intricate castle is more than 10 feet (3m) taller than the 2019 record-breaker. Rather fittingly, at the top of the pyramid-like structure, which took 4,860 tons of sand to make, is a model of coronavirus wearing a crown, representing the virus’ control over our lives. </p> <p><strong><a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/82867/the-worlds-most-jaw-dropping-sculptures-and-statues?page=1">See more of the world's statues and sculptures here</a></strong></p>

<p>Every year on the golden beach of Las Canteras, Gran Canaria, talented sand artists work tirelessly to create a spectacular nativity scene. The tradition, <a href="https://www.hellocanaryislands.com/experiences/the-incredible-nativity-scene-carved-out-of-sand-on-las-canteras-beach-in-gran-canaria/">which began in 2006</a>, attracts visitors from all over the world, with the sand sculptures usually being completed in early December and staying up until early January. Sand Nativity, Las Canteras, Gran Canaria

Every year on the golden beach of Las Canteras, Gran Canaria, talented sand artists work tirelessly to create a spectacular nativity scene. The tradition, which began in 2006, attracts visitors from all over the world, with the sand sculptures usually being completed in early December and staying up until early January. Pictured is the sculpture from 2012.

Although each year’s version is different, the installation always takes inspiration from the nativity and features its key figures – the baby Jesus, Virgin Mary, three kings, shepherds, villagers, sheep and donkeys. As well as this, the sculptures often incorporate nods to Gran Canaria’s landscape. Pictured here is 2018’s sculpture.

It’s estimated that around 200,000 people have come to see the sculptures in the past 15 years, according to the installation’s organisers. What’s more, it all goes to a good cause: donations from visitors to the sand nativity are given to soup kitchens in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and around £17,000 is raised each year.

Accepting a trip price

Once you request your ride, you’ve accepted the price shown in the app.

Upfront pricing

If upfront pricing is available in your city, you’ll see the price for a trip next to each vehicle option. Upfront prices account for:

  • The rate for time and distance to your destination
  • Applicable fees, tolls and surcharges

Note: You might not see an upfront price if you request a long trip, or if you request the trip too fast for the app to calculate the price.

The upfront price you’re shown may change due to a number of circumstances which may include:

  • Adding stops
  • Updating your destination
  • Significant changes to the route or duration of your trip
  • You pass through a toll that was not factored into your upfront price

In addition, you may incur wait time fees for the time you take to get to the car at the pickup or multi-stop fees for time spent at an on-trip stop. The wait time fee grace period and the commencement of the no-show window start at the time of a driver’s arrival at a pick-up location. A driver’s arrival time is based on technology that uses GPS coordinates, which does not always perfectly correspond to real world coordinates.

Note: Time and distance pricing does not apply to all Uber rideshare products.**

Please note that, as of August 10, 2022, multi-stop fees are not live in all US markets.

No upfront pricing available

If you don’t see a single upfront price when requesting a trip, you’ll see a price range instead. This range takes any fees, tolls and surcharges into account. It does not account for destination changes, extra stops or wait time. Your actual trip price is calculated when you arrive at your destination.

Best Travel Insurance for Road Trips

Travelex travel insurance.

The Travelex America plan is meant for trips limited to the U.S., but it has the highest coverage limits in many areas compared to its other programs. If you're flying somewhere, the lost baggage limits are higher. Its natural strengths shine for road trippers, though. Travelex America adds coverage for roadside service and rental car coverage for unexpected accidents. It also covers pets should you be involved in an accident while on the road.

While your standard auto insurance does extend to car rentals within the U.S. for a limited time, any accident would affect future rates. Travelex would eliminate the risk of reporting to your auto insurance provider for minor incidents within its purview.

Introduction to Travel Insurance

Why travel insurance is a must-have.

The unpredictable nature of traveling – from flight cancellations to medical emergencies – can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare. Travel insurance acts as a personal safeguard, ensuring that unexpected events don't drain your wallet or ruin your trip.

Understanding Different Types of Travel Insurance

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. From single-trip travel insurance policies to annual travel insurance plans , from minimal coverage to comprehensive protection, understanding the spectrum of options is your first step in finding the right fit for your journey.

Key Features to Look for in Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance for medical emergencies.

Imagine falling ill in a foreign country; daunting, right? A robust travel insurance plan ensures you don't have to worry about how much emergency medical care while traveling will cost, even in the most remote corners of the globe. This coverage will often come in tandem with emergency medical evacuation coverage.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Benefits

Life is full of surprises, some less pleasant than others. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage ensures that you're not left out of pocket if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short. You may also look for cancel for any reason and interruption for any reason options, which will reimburse you for a percentage of your nonrefundable fees, but expands the covered reasons you can cancel a trip. You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance companies here.

Coverage for Personal Belongings and Baggage Loss

Losing your belongings is more than an inconvenience; it's losing a piece of your world. Insurance that covers personal belongings and baggage loss ensures that you're compensated for your loss, helping you to rebound and continue your adventure.

Support and Assistance Services

In times of trouble, having a lifeline can make all the difference. Look for insurance that offers 24/7 support and assistance services, giving you peace of mind that help is just a phone call away. Also, check websites that field customer reviews like Trustpilot, the Better Business Bureau, and InsureMyTrip , to see how well a company responds to customer requests.

Choosing the Best Travel Insurance

Reputation and reliability of the travel insurance provider.

A provider's reputation is not just about being well-known; it's about reliability, customer satisfaction, and the ability to deliver on promises. Researching and choosing a reputable provider is a cornerstone in ensuring your safety and satisfaction.

Understanding the Policy's Fine Print

The devil is in the details, and understanding the fine print of what your travel insurance policy covers is crucial. Be aware of coverage limits, exclusions, and the process for filing a claim to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

In the age of information, customer reviews and feedback are goldmines of insight. Learn from the experiences of others to gauge the reliability and customer service of the insurance provider you're considering. While the ratings are important, you should also look at whether or not a company responds to customer complaints.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Insurance

Knowing your policy inside out.

Familiarize yourself with every aspect of your policy – what it covers, what it doesn't, how to file a claim, and who to contact in an emergency. Being informed means being prepared.

Steps to Take When a Problem Arises

If you face an issue during your travels, knowing the immediate steps to take can make all the difference. Keep important contacts and your policy details handy, and remember, your insurance provider is there to assist you.

How to Pick the Best Travel Insurance Company for You

There isn't a one-size-fits-all policy that works perfectly for every traveler. Young, healthy solo travelers can opt for much cheaper plans that offer bare-bones coverage, while families juggling complex itineraries will do best by investing in a robust policy that can help defray any costs associated with lost baggage, delayed transportation or other trip-impeding obstacles.

That being said, you can't go wrong with a travel insurance provider that boasts a reputable history and offers a wide range of customizable plans. In some cases, you may be comparing plans that are only a few dollars' apart from each other. In such situations, you should generally opt for the insurance company that offers the strongest customer service. It's also worth considering whether or not the travel insurance provider has been reviewed by other travelers with similar itineraries to your own.

An insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth is one of the best tools for searching travel insurance policies. Once you input the specifics of your travel itinerary, you'll be able to see hundreds of search results to compare the ones that catch your eye. If the options are too overwhelming, use the filters to the left of your search page to eliminate as many irrelevant plans as possible.

How We Reviewed the Best Travel Insurance Companies

To come up with our list of the best travel insurance companies, we evaluated each insurer based on the following factors:

Guide Methodology: What We Considered

Policy Types

Travel insurance is essential, but often underused partly because people aren't getting what they want. Business Insider's 2023 travel study showed 10.65% of travelers surveyed bought cancel for any reason insurance. Cost may be a factor, but in many cases, the coverage is more affordable than you might think. Regardless, companies must offer a diverse range of coverage options. We award five stars to companies offering all standard coverages and additional options like pet and sports equipment protection.

Our 2023 travel study indicated the majority of purchases were made through the travel provider (ex: flight protection insurance when you're purchasing your airline tickets). While these may be sufficient for some customers, we look for companies offering a more comprehensive range of services.

According to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association, the average cost of travel insurance will be between 4% and 8% of total travel expenses. Anything beyond that price point should include additional benefits beyond the standard inclusions, such as CFAR protection or upgraded medical coverage. Anything below that 4% threshold may leave you lacking important or sufficient coverage in an emergency.

Convenience and Flexibility

Whether you're an infrequent traveler or a suitcase warrior, a good travel insurance company should have you covered. In many cases, you might not even have to talk to a person in order to purchase your policy.

Many people think of travel insurance in context with specific trips, but most of these top contenders sell both single-trip and multi-trip policies, also known as annual travel insurance. Some companies also offer plans specifically designed for cruisers, students abroad, and business travelers. (Read our guide to the best cruise travel insurance companies for more details.) Finally, all of these providers offer multiple options for getting the specific areas and amounts of coverage that you want.

Claims Handling

Most travelers never have a large claim. Premiums are low, and it provides peace of mind for the just in case situations. So they leave reviews based on their reduced stress levels. But what happens if you lose your luggage or have to stay a few extra days due to an unexpected accident? Will your insurance carrier cover your claim without all the hassle? We check real customer reviews to sort this out for you.

Ease of Use and Support

When purchasing, during your trip, and throughout the claims process, you may need extra support. Does the company have a 24/7 help line? Does it have an online or mobile system allowing you to self-manage? Essentially, what are the options when you need help? We look at the big picture to evaluate the average customer experience with each company.

You can read our full insurance rating methodology for even more details.

Best Travel Insurance FAQs

There isn't a one-size-fits-all solution for every traveler. Determine the benefits that are most important to you, like baggage delay coverage, medical coverage, and trip delay coverage, then look for a company with solid customer ratings, especially when it comes to processing claims.

Travel insurance will pay out if you experience a covered event, such as a travel delay or delayed or lost baggage. If you're looking to get travel insurance for a specific reason, such as needing to potentially cancel your trip due to work reasons, make sure your policy will cover you in that situation before purchasing it. You should also check customer reviews to see other travelers' claims experiences, as it varies wildly from company to company.

The average cost of travel insurance is 4% to 8% of your total trip cost, so it could vary widely depending on where you're traveling and the length of your trip. Your age, the number of people in your group, and other factors can also influence how much you'll pay.

Most comprehensive travel insurance policies include travel medical coverage that can come in handy if an emergency occurs and you need medical evacuation. Some travel insurance plans offer more specialized coverage for travelers with pre-existing conditions , so shop around if medical coverage is a top priority for you.

$100,000 should be a sufficient medical coverage limit for travel insurance. If you're planning on doing extreme sports or anything particularly risky on your trip, you may want to increase your coverage level. A high medical coverage limit is especially useful when you're purchasing cruise travel insurance, since medical evacuations are more involved at sea.

On D-Day, they changed the world. 80 years later, an incredible journey takes them back.

the trip 31

EN ROUTE TO FRANCE – Robert Pedigo had a hunch.

He and his bomber crew, based in England, had been flying missions against the Nazis. Then, on a late spring evening in 1944, a commander took each squadron into a nearby wheat field to give them special instruction.

“Men, go get a good night’s rest,” he said, “because we have an important mission tomorrow.”

The commander, he has always remembered, was Jimmy Stewart, the star who had left Hollywood to lead air attacks throughout World War II. Pedigo and the rest of the flight crew bedded down. The wakeup call would come at 2:30 the next morning, June 6.

Pedigo, from Indianapolis, had sold scrap metal and worked other jobs during the Great Depression to help support his family before enlisting in the Army Air Corps. Now he was a nose gunner and air bomber on a crew of 10 in the 453rd Bombardment group. Their B-24J Liberator, nicknamed the Silent Yokum, took off into the morning sky.

As they crossed the English Channel, Pedigo looked down and couldn’t believe his eyes. He had been right. It was something big.

Instead of just water, he saw ships, so many that he could have walked across the channel, using the boats as stepping stones.

Instead of just sky, he saw fighters, heavy bombers, C-47 troop transports, every kind of plane imaginable.

It was June 6, 1944, the day the rest of the world would soon know as D-Day .

From his seat at the nose gun, Pedigo could see it happening. Above, below and all around him, every boat and plane was headed in the same direction he was. Toward Normandy.

May 30, 2024: Fort Worth, Texas

With the ballroom lights dim, a 50-member choir of cadets from the U.S. military academies assembled on stage. They launched into a patriotic number, the closing event of the evening.

Spread out in front of them was a crowd of hundreds, but 66 were particularly important.

World War II veterans, each was accompanied by a family member or guardian. Eight decades after D-Day, they were gathering in Texas for the start of a new mission.

They were chosen to make an honor flight aboard a chartered Boeing 787 provided by American Airlines. The party also included six Medal of Honor winners from wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam and two “Rosie the Riveters,” women who made invaluable contributions to the war effort by working in factories and shipyards. In total, some 280 people would make up the entourage.

Together, they would be headed back to France, back to the scene of D-Day itself.

The journey would lead them to the beaches once code-named Omaha and Utah, where several of the men among the 66 had fought in some of the bloodiest combat of D-Day.

Atop the steep cliffs above Omaha Beach, President Joe Biden and other world leaders will mark the 80th anniversary of the invasion on Thursday.

The 66 vets will be there, too, at Normandy American Cemetery, where more than 9,000 fallen Americans – people who were once just like them – rest forever beneath French soil.

The trip to get there required more than a year of planning. But its official beginning was with a gala ball on May 30, the night before departure.

One or two at a time, the vets entered. People pulled out their phones and snapped pictures. David Yoho, 95, from Vienna, Virginia, did an animated bow as the crowd cheered.

Behind him, some rode in wheelchairs. Others, slightly stooped, leaned on canes. A few wore military uniforms decorated with medals.

Inside the ballroom at American Airlines’ headquarters, the veterans exchanged war stories and dined on Provencal short ribs, lump crab cakes and apple pie topped with creamy French brie. A few got up from their tables and slow danced to bands covering Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope and the Andrews Sisters.

Dan Dougherty, an Army veteran who was on the first ship to go directly from the United States to France during the war, celebrated his 99 th birthday. The entire room serenaded him with “Happy Birthday.”

The mood was celebratory, but statistics added some poignancy to the pageantry.

The youngest of the 66 making the journey was 95; the oldest 107. Their average age: 100.8.

About a third of the adult male population of the United States served at some point during World War II . The armed forces included about 16.5 million men and women in all.

Today, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, less than 1% of them are still alive.

For some of the 66 veterans, this flight would be their first trip to Normandy since the war. For all of them, it would most likely be their last.

“You launched the largest wave of freedom across our world,” former President George W. Bush said in a videotaped message. “Billions of people have lived in liberty because of what you did 80 years ago.”

Watching him was Dominick Critelli, 103, an Army veteran who landed on Utah Beach a few days after the D-Day invasion and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Critelli had immigrated to the United States from Italy when he was only 8, during the dictatorship of Benito Mussolini, “where they were shooting everybody and giving them poison.”

“I can’t forget that,” he said.

In America, he found a new home, one he would later fight for.

Finally, the choir took to the stage. The song filled the room.

From the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans white with foam.

From his table at the back, Critelli silently mouthed the words.

1944: D-Day at Omaha Beach, France

Sid Edson got up early and went from breakfast to a briefing and then to his bomber.

“My God,” he thought just before he climbed into his plane. “Today is the day.”

Edson had been a welder in Brooklyn before he was drafted into the Air Force in 1943. He worked as a radio operator and a gunner in a B-24 Liberator as part of Bomb Squadron 491. On the morning of June 6, the squadron’s mission was to bomb a German airfield in France.

“We were hoping it would help the soldiers invading all of the beaches,” recalls Edson, who now lives  in Lake Worth, Florida.

Edson wouldn’t remember much about the flight to France that day. He was too focused on doing his job. A radio operator had to make sure the flight crew was monitoring correct frequencies. And that the bomber's complex intercom system was functioning properly so the crew could communicate with each other. Edson also doubled as a gunner. He had to be prepared, on a moment’s notice, to man the bomber’s giant machine guns and open fire.

An eerie radio silence filled the plane as it neared its target. The approaching Americans didn’t want to say anything that might tip off the Germans about what was about to hit them.

May 31, 2024: Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport

By 5 p.m. Friday, a sizable crowd had begun to form in Terminal D to watch the parade pass by.

Boy Scouts in tan-and-green uniforms waved American flags. Travelers hurrying to catch a flight slowed to check out the commotion. Others squatted beside the white-haired men and asked for permission to take selfies.

American Airlines began planning the trip 18 months ago. The Old Glory Honor Flight, a nonprofit group that has arranged other trips for veterans, helped recruit applicants, train their guardians and provide the medical staff volunteers. A foundation led by actor Gary Sinise also helped put the trip together.

Veterans selected to make the trip were required to get a medical exam to determine that they were healthy enough to travel. Seventy-five wheelchairs were available if needed – enough for every veteran on board.

Most of the veterans stayed in wheelchairs for the short ride from gate D24 to D29, where they would board a plane for the 5,000-mile, 8½-hour flight to Paris.

Willie Clemons, 96, who joined the Navy after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor , saluted the cheering crowd that swelled with each passing minute.

Passengers waiting at gate D27 for a flight to Barcelona jumped from their seats and applauded. A woman working the counter at Dickey’s Barbecue Pit collected orders while keeping her eyes on the festivities.

Andi Goldsticker of Dallas stood off to the side and held a sign thanking the veterans for their bravery and sacrifices in service to the country. “Because of YOU,” it read, “we are safe and free.”

Goldsticker’s father-in-law, Ralph Goldsticker, 102, a bombardier who flew missions on D-Day, was making the trip to France. His son, Andi’s husband Larry, was accompanying him.

As she watched, she recalled the way her father-in-law had described the war. “Every time I dropped a bomb,” he would say, “I thought I was going to die.”

At the boarding gate, the wheelchairs turned down the jetway.

The 66 made their way down the plane’s double aisles. Above them, a photo and bio of each was taped to the overhead luggage bins.

Festoons of red, white and blue stars were draped across cabin walls. Small American flags were tucked behind the passenger seat headrests.

Over the intercom, the announcements were tailored to the century-old travelers.

Take your medicines. Drink plenty of liquids. Be sure to change sitting positions every few hours.

In the rows behind the vets was a 12-member volunteer medical team. Emergency room doctors and nurses, a paramedic and nurse practitioners would roam the plane throughout the flight.

Anyone experiencing a health issue should alert the crew right away.

The orange Texas sunset glared through the cabin windows as the plane rolled, lifted off and pointed toward France.

1944: Omaha Beach, France

Dead bodies lay scattered on Omaha Beach when Vernon Mitchell landed.

Mitchell, a gunner, had known precious little about the military before he enlisted in the Army in 1940. But jobs were hard to come by in St. Augustine, Texas, after the Great Depression. After working his entire young life on a farm, he signed up for the service at age 19. A few short years later, he was wading ashore in France.

It was Wednesday, June 7. The first wave of the Allied invasion – and the most intense fighting – had taken place the day before. Over the course of the invasion, about 2,400 U.S. soldiers, more than 1,400 British and nearly 1,100 Canadians would be killed.

Countless German soldiers died, too, but the Germans had already picked up many of their corpses by the time Mitchell landed. Dead soldiers were bad for morale.

When Mitchell and other members of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division stepped onto the shore, they were smacked by German artillery fire.

“They were still bombarding the place,” Mitchell remembers. “It was terrible.”

Mitchell and his comrades fought their way out of Omaha Beach. Days later, however, Mitchell was heavily wounded when a German shell hit his squad. Two of his fellow soldiers died.

June 1, 2024: Somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean

The overhead lights in the first-class cabin were on dim as the airliner zipped across the Atlantic Ocean at 37,000 feet. A little past midnight, there were still 2,300 miles to go – roughly the halfway point to Paris.

Several veterans dozed quietly as a medical crew roamed periodically through the cabin. John Gleeson, however, was wide awake.

A blanket thrown over his legs to stay warm, Gleeson, 100, of Honolulu, was recalling the story of how he ended up among these 66 veterans.

His midnight memories were snippets of the entire war.

How the news of the bombing of Pearl Harbor had enraged him as a teenager in Long Beach, California.

How he couldn’t pick out Oahu on a map, but the day after Dec. 7, 1941, he enlisted in the Army. How he qualified for the Air Corps.

How he was sitting on a bluff overlooking the beach three years later when the radio blared with the news about D-Day. The feeling when he realized so many of the men being killed were the same age as he was.

Gleeson recalled going to his commanding officer and asking to go to gunnery school. How he was finally sent to fly combat missions over Europe.

“I just had a feeling,” he remembered, as the 787 soared through the night. “I’ve got to do something to help save the world, or save the United States.”

1944: Utah Beach, France

The landing craft pitched and swayed on the choppy water as it approached Utah Beach. But Martin Sylvester never got seasick.

The Brooklyn native had always been prone to carsickness. Around him, other soldiers from the Army’s 4th Infantry Division had grown sick from the turbulent tossing of their amphibious military vessel and were throwing up. Not Sylvester. Maybe, he surmised in his 2009 memoir, he was just too frightened.

The son of a tailor and a stay-at-home mom, Sylvester landed as part of the third wave of Allied forces on June 7. He and the other troops could hear gunfire in the distance as they waded through 3 feet of water and approached the shore. Yet they encountered no resistance from the Germans.

They walked to the top of a hill, where they came across a cement bunker with dead Germans inside and a field strewn with the corpses of animals – cows, horses, pigs and dogs, all killed by Navy artillery fire that had overshot the beach.

The crackle of small rifle fire suddenly filled the air. The Germans were shooting at them. The soldiers quickly ducked into a patch of hedgerows about seven feet apart and fired back. “When we fired, we went from hedgerow to hedgerow,” Sylvester recalled in an interview.

Sylvester and his comrades suffered only minimal casualties. The following January, however, he was hit by a sniper and taken as a prisoner of war in Fuhren, Germany. He escaped a couple of months later and hid in the basement of a one-room schoolhouse until he was picked up by an American armored unit that came through the town. He was recuperating in a Paris hospital when, on May 8, 1945, he heard loud noises and celebrations in the street.

The Germans had surrendered. The war would soon be over.

June 1, 2024: Paris

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Paris,” a member of the flight crew announced as the plane touched down at 11:48 a.m. Saturday at Charles de Gaulle Airport, named after the French general and World War II hero. The exhausted passengers applauded and cheered.

One at a time, the veterans disembarked with the help of family members and assistants, who pushed their wheelchairs down the narrow jetway. Inside the terminal, a long line of spectators held up photos of the veterans, waved French and American flags and shouted “thank you” in French accents.

At a brief airport ceremony, a handful of veterans slowly rose from their wheelchairs as young students in blue sweaters sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the French national anthem, “La Marseillaise.” Others, too tired to rise, stayed seated, hands over their hearts.

In France, veterans who had a role in the D-Day landings are not only considered honored guests, but are embraced as “cherished heroes,” Denise Campbell Bauer, the U.S. ambassador to France, told the gathering.

“Your presence here reminds us that behind the monumental scale of D-Day are real people, individuals with their own stories,” she said.

The last surviving World War II veterans are “the living witnesses to an era that shaped our world,” said Philippe Étienne, the former French ambassador to the United States.

From the back row, Pedigo was overwhelmed as he silently listened to the accolades.

“I have a tremendous connection, tremendous feelings for the buddies I lost there,” he said. “Tremendous feelings for people worldwide, especially the French people.”

While in Paris, the veterans would attend a ceremony at Suresnes American Cemetery and another beneath the Arc de Triomphe. Then on Monday, they would board buses to Normandy for the final leg of their journey, to stand where thousands of other Americans – people who were once just like them – rest forever beneath French soil.

Aboard the buses would be Martin Sylvester, 98, who had endured each day as a POW on two slices of bread and a cup of watery soup.

Vernon Mitchell, 103, who survived the shelling that killed two of his comrades, and was later awarded with the Purple Heart, Bronze star and the French Legion of Honor.

Sid Edson, 100 , who dropped his bombs successfully that day and only later pondered the fact that he had been in the air the entire time – and never set foot on French soil.

And 100-year-old Robert Pedigo, who always had the feeling that on June 6, something important was going to happen.

The Trip is a really well made dark comedy. Think Tarantino and the Coen Brothers - you have all the blood, splatter and fighting of one with the edgy humour of the other. The style works seamlessly and both Noomi Rapace and Askel Hennie are brilliant in this violent but very funny action thriller. Action Black Comedy Norwegian.
