Use Safari extensions on your Mac

Safari extensions enhance and customize the browsing experience on your Mac. Here's how to install them, uninstall them, or share them across devices.

Safari extensions add functionality to Safari, so you can explore the web the way you want. Extensions can show helpful information about a webpage, display news headlines, help you use your favorite services, change the appearance of webpages, and much more. Extensions are a great way to personalize your browsing experience.

Install extensions

Turn on extensions, turn off extensions, uninstall extensions, share extensions across devices.

Use the App Store to conveniently download and install Safari extensions. All extensions in the App Store are reviewed, signed, and hosted by Apple for your security, and they're automatically kept up to date.

Start by installing the latest macOS updates to make sure that Safari is up to date. You need Safari 12 or later to get Safari extensions from the App Store.

Open Safari and choose Safari > Safari Extensions from the menu bar.

The App Store opens to the Safari Extensions page. To download and install an extension, click Get or click the price. You might be asked to sign in with your Apple ID.

Click Install.

After the extension is installed, click Open and follow the onscreen instructions provided by the extension.

After installing an extension, follow these steps to turn it on.

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences).

Click Extensions.

Select the checkbox next to the extension's name. Learn what to do if you can't turn on extensions .

If you're browsing privately, or using a profile or web app

When browsing in a private window in macOS Sonoma or later, all extensions that require website access are turned off by default. To use an extension when browsing privately:

Choose Safari > Settings.

Select the extension in the sidebar, then select “Allow in Private Browsing” on the right.

Whether or not you're browsing privately, you can also restrict the extension's access to certain websites. Click the Edit Websites button to view the extension in Websites settings. From there you can allow access, deny access, or require that websites ask you for access.

When using Safari profiles , extensions for the default profile are managed in the main Extensions tab of Safari settings. Extensions for other profiles are managed in the Profiles tab, which has its own Extensions tab for each profile. By default, extensions are turned off for each new profile.

Share button

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences), then click Extensions.

To turn off an extension, deselect its checkbox.

If you can't determine what an extension does, or you don't expect to use it again, you should uninstall it.

To uninstall an extension, select the extension and click the Uninstall button.

Starting with macOS Ventura, iOS 16, and iPadOS 16, you can share extensions across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad:

On your Mac, open Safari and choose Safari > Settings, then click Extensions. Select “Share across devices” at the bottom of the window.

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Safari > Extensions, then turn on Share Across Devices.

No alt supplied for Image

To uninstall an extension from all devices, you must uninstall it on each device.

Safari no longer supports most web plug-ins. To load webpages more quickly, save energy, and strengthen security, Safari is optimized for content that uses the HTML5 web standard, which doesn't require a plug-in. To enhance and customize your browsing experience, use Safari extensions instead of web plug-ins.

How to Access the Download Manager in Safari for iOS

ios7 safari icon

With iOS 13, Apple has brought a similar feature to the mobile version of its Safari browser in the form of the Download Manager. Now, when you choose to download a file, such as an image or document, a little download icon is displayed in the top right corner of the screen.

You can tap the icon to check the status of your downloads, and tapping the magnifying glass next to a file will open its folder location, whether that's on your device or in the cloud.

Best Download Manager Apps for iOS

When we first published this article, Safari on the iPhone and iPad lacked download management capabilities, and the only way to manage downloads was to use a third-party app for it.

But lately, Apple introduced native file management on the iPhone and iPad with the Files app in 2017. Two years later, Safari got its Download Manager, letting users store and manage downloads via the Files app on iPhone and iPad.

Over time, there have been improvements to the native download manager in Safari, which has made it one of the best download managers for the iPhone and iPad. But even so, there are a few things you need to set up to get the most out of Safari’s Download Manager.

This article will explore how to use Safari’s Download Manager to its full potential, as well as some third-party apps for download management on iPhone and iPad.

Note: The criteria for considering an app as a decent download manager for iOS still remains the same as before. The app should primarily be able to download all file types, display download speed, provide resume support for in-progress downloads, etc. It should also allow you to export the downloaded files to other apps, and provide basic support for opening common photo, audio, video & document formats.

Copy   Safari Download Manager on iOS, iPadOS

Here, we’ll guide you to set up Safari on iOS and iPadOS, to get the most out of its Download Manager.

Copy   Set up your Download Manager

To get the most out of Safari’s Download Manager, it’s preferable to go through some basic setup.

The Downloads icon appears in the top-right corner within Safari, next to the address bar. But this icon is hidden by default unless a file is added to the download queue.

Safari Download Manager on iOS, iPadOS

Now, you might have noticed that the icon automatically disappears after some time, even if you’ve downloaded files in the past.

If you need access to your download list items (Download History) at all times, there is an option you need to modify. The following steps will guide you to always show the Downloads icon in Safari.

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Scroll down and tap on Safari .
  • Under the “General” section, tap on Downloads .
  • Tap on Remove Download List Items , and select Manually .

While you’re here, you may also want to change the location for your downloads. By default, Safari saves your downloads in the Downloads folder within iCloud Drive.

If you frequently download files using Safari, that could consume unnecessary storage on iCloud, especially if you forget to delete temporary downloads. To avoid such a situation, it’s recommended that you change your Downloads location outside of iCloud Drive.

Set up Safari's Download Manager - iPhone and iPad

To do so, go to the Settings app, and navigate to Safari >> Downloads (under “General” section), and choose the On My iPhone/iPad option under the “Store Downloaded Files On” section, to save your downloads to the local Downloads folder. Alternatively, you may choose a custom location for your Downloads, by selecting “Other…” and choosing the appropriate folder.

Thereafter, when you download a file in Safari, it will be saved to your device in the selected location, and the same will be available in Safari’s Download List. And, as long as you don’t “Clear” the entire list, the Downloads icon should remain visible next to the address bar.

Note: To clear individual items from the Downloads list, go to Safari, tap on the Downloads icon, and instead of tapping on “Clear”, slide a specific item in the list from the right to reveal the Delete option, and then tap on Delete .

Copy   How to Download files in Safari on iPhone, iPad

If you open a download link in Safari, there are two possible outcomes.

  • You get a pop-up with the options to either “View” or “Download” the file, or both.
  • The content or media behind the link directly opens in Safari.

Download files in Safari on iPhone, iPad

In the first scenario, you can tap on the Download button in the pop-up, which starts downloading the file.

In the second scenario, the below section(s) will guide you to download such files.

Copy   Download files instead of opening them in Safari

Download files instead of opening them in Safari

Some files, such as PDF, MP4, etc., may directly open in Safari when you click on a download link instead of showing the Download prompt. To download these files in Safari, do the following:

  • Open the web page containing the download link in Safari on the iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap and hold the download link to pop out and reveal additional options.
  • Scroll down through the associated options, and tap on Download Linked File .

The file will be added to the Downloads List (queue) in Safari and start downloading.

Copy   Download files when the “Download Linked File” option is not available

If opening a direct download link in Safari doesn’t provide the “Download” pop-up, or if the “Download Linked File” option doesn’t appear when you tap & hold an embedded link, here is what you can do to download these files using Safari.

Download files when the “Download Linked File” option is not available

  • Open the link in Safari for iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap on the Share icon from the bottom of the screen.
  • Scroll and select the Save to Files option.
  • Choose a preferred location to save the file, and tap on Save from the top right corner.

The file would be saved in the selected location.

Note: If the link is for an audio or video file, Safari will open it in its built-in media player. In this case, tap on the screen to reveal the player controls, and tap on the ‘X’ to close the player. Now you should be back in the Safari window, with the URL of the media available on the address bar. Proceed with Step #2 above to download the file.

Copy   Download Video from streaming sites in Safari on iPhone, iPad

If you want to download embedded videos or audio via Safari, you can use any suitable web media grabber, such as 9xBuddy , to parse the streaming link and get the direct download link to the source video or audio file.

Once you get the direct download link, you can download it in Safari just like any other file, as mentioned in the above sections. You may refer to this section of our dedicated article to learn how to do so.

Copy   Other Features of Safari’s Download Manager on iPhone and iPad

Resume Support: In Safari, if you access the Downloads list (by clicking on the Download icon next to the address bar) while downloading a file, you can pause a download temporarily by tapping on the “X” next to the file, and it changes to the “Resume” icon. You can come back later and resume the download again (if the server supports it) by tapping on the “Resume” icon. The Downloads list also allows you to view the progress of current downloads.

Background Downloads: Once a download starts, you may switch to other apps and continue working. The download should continue in the background without interruption. In our experience, background downloads in Safari on iPhone and iPad work much more reliably compared to background downloads on third-party download managers.

Hence, Safari’s built-in download manager on iOS and iPadOS is now powerful enough to handle and manage different types of file downloads. But if you still want to explore other third-party online downloader apps, the below section explores a few of them.

Copy   Third-party Download Manager apps for iPhone and iPad

Copy   documents – file manager with downloader.

Documents is one of the most popular file management apps on the iOS platform but also serves as a decent file downloader, especially because of its native support for a wide variety of file types both for viewing as well as for downloading. Being a full-fledged file management app, you can organize and store your files, and view them without having to export them to any other app.

Documents – File Manager with Downloader

Documents app provides additional features, including the option to add different connections (WebDAV, SFTP, SMB, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.), rename the file, and set the download location at the time of file download, etc.

Documents app  is completely free without any limitations or ads. You can learn more about the versatile iOS file manager app, in our dedicated article.

Copy   Total Downloader – Download Manager for iPhone, iPad

Total Downloader is a file and download manager for iOS that satisfies almost all of the criteria to be considered as a decent download manager. Its built-in browser supports universal search and can download any type of file format.

From a particular web page, you can tap on a download link, and choose between whether you want to Download or Open (Navigate) it. Unlike many other downloader apps which directly open the file on clicking on the download button, Total handles it smartly by letting you decide the subsequent action.

Total Downloader - iPhone Download Manager

The Downloads tab in the Transfers screen lists all the active and inactive download tasks, which includes the current speed of the download, size of the download, and other details. Tapping on a particular download will allow you to Pause, Resume or Cancel the download. Completed downloads appear in the files tab, from where you can play or open the file, or export it to Photos (for photos and videos only) or other apps using the Open In option.

One of the most unique features of Total is its ability to grab embedded media links from specific streaming sites, like Facebook, Vimeo, Instagram, etc. But to avoid legal issues, it explicitly disables the grabbing functionality from certain sites that primarily host original copyrighted content from artists/creators.

Total also has certain features of a file manager app. It supports the opening of common text, photo, audio, video, documents, and archive formats, also integrating a bunch of cloud services, including Dropbox Google Drive, OneDrive, and WebDAV services. Thus, you can directly sync the downloaded files with your preferred cloud service, and even stream media files from the cloud.

Some of the other notable features of Total include private browsing mode, bookmarks, and history management, user agent spoofing, PIN-protected folders, and much more.

The free version of Total is ad-supported. You can remove ads and upgrade to the pro version of the app with an in-app purchase of $4.99.

Copy   Files – Download Manager for iOS

Files app (not to be confused with Apple’s app of the same name) is quite simple in its look and feel, yet powerful to handle any type of download link we throw at it. The app has four sections, a web browser, a download manager, a section for the downloaded files, and Settings. The built-in web browser provides specific settings for the default search engine, user agent (Mobile Safari or Firefox), and custom MIME types that define how the app handles different types of download links. You can either type a complete URL or use a search phrase on the browser’s unified search bar.

Files - Download Manager App for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

Files also have a Safari Bookmarklet, which allows you to transfer download links from the iOS Safari browser to the Files’ built-in browser, where you can download from the available links. Even if a particular file type is not supported for download, you can manually define how the app handles it, by adding it as a new MIME type. Alternatively, you can tap & hold the download link and select Download Linked File As option.

Note: If the download URL string is long, the action choices for tap & hold may not be visible fully, especially on small screen devices, such as the 4-inch iPhone. You need to scroll through the list of available options and select the preferred one instead. The Downloads tab shows all the active downloads, along with their download speed and progress. You can tap on the download and select Copy Address from the pop-up to get its source URL or tap on the stop/resume button next to the download to control the operation as preferred.

The app could also serve as a file manager, with a built-in document viewer for PDF, DOC, XLS, PPT, TXT, HTML, and RTF file formats, ability to extract ZIP and RAR archives, photo viewer, and media player.

The app provides decent import and export options for exchanging files with other apps, and also with other devices, including AirDrop/Share menu, iTunes File Sharing, FTP transfer, etc.

The free version of Files provides for limited downloads and storage. To remove the limitation, you can upgrade to the Pro version via in-app purchase, for $4.99.

Being a native solution, Safari’s Download Manager provides the best overall experience when it comes to downloading files on your iPhone and iPad, especially with background downloads.

But as described above, a few of the third-party solutions offer some advanced features, such as automatic media grabbing, additional protocol integrations, better download management options, etc.

How to Manage Extensions in Safari on Mac and More

Arnold Zafra

Like Google Chrome, Apple’s Safari browser for Mac allows you to use extensions. I’m sure you’ve heard of browser extensions, even though you may have not used them before. In the case of Apple’s Safari browser for Mac, there are many extensions you can download and install that can greatly improve your web browsing experience. That’s because Safari extensions enhance the browser’s functionality. In this guide, I will show you how and where to manage extensions in Safari on Mac and more.

What is Safari Extension and How to Install It

As its name suggests, extensions are generally described as software modules that you can use to customize the browser you use. They extend the functionality of a web browser. A single extension installed on your browser can greatly improve the way you browse the internet and the tasks that you need to do.

For the Safari app for Mac, extensions allow you to do many things, such as display social media and news buttons, block content on websites, extend your access to apps, and more.

In case you’re wondering where to get Safari extensions, you can find and download them from the App Store. All the Safari extensions that you can find from the App Store are vetted by Apple just like any other app. So. you are sure that those extensions are safe and won’t harm your Mac in any way.

How to Install Extensions in Safari on Your Mac

Time needed:  1 minute

To install an extension for Safari on your Mac, just follow these steps.

How to See and Manage Safari Extensions

When you’ve installed Safari extensions, you may not notice some of them at once. Some stay hidden and work in the background. Others appear when you are about to do something in Safari that needs the installed extensions. For example, if you installed the Grammarly Safari extension, you will only see it working when you’re composing a text or message.

To see and manage the Safari extensions on your Mac, simply open the Safari app, then click Setting s > Extensions .

safari extension download manager

From here, you can do several things.

  • Turn an extension on or off by deselecting the extension’s checkbox.
  • Use the Safari extensions on your other Apple devices, as long as you’ve signed in with the same Apple ID on your other devices. In addition, you must have Safari turned on in iCloud, enabled two-factor authentication, and selected Share across devices .
  • Change an extension’s settings.
  • Remove an extension by selecting it, then clicking Uninstall . You may also delete the app that contains the extension.

Relatedly, iPhone or iPad users can check out our separate guide on how to manage Safari extensions on those devices.

How to Remove Unwanted Extensions

In case you’re asking yourself, “How do I remove unwanted extensions in Safari?” This only takes a few simple steps.

  • In the Safari app on your Mac, Click Settings .

safari extension download manager

  • If you don’t want to remove the app, you can just disable its extension.
  • If you want to remove the app as well, simply click the Show in Finder button.

  • Click Move to Trash .

How to Edit Safari Extensions

Another question that you might ask yourself is, “How do I edit Safari extensions?” For that matter, can you edit Safari extensions? The answer to the second question is yes. Unfortunately, however, editing Safari extensions requires you you to be knowledgeable about the Safari Extension builder.

You will also need to execute a Terminal command that extracts all the files contained in the extensions you’ve downloaded. Then, you have to edit it with the Safari Extension Builder. This is something I hope a general user won’t need to do, but if you like to tinker and customize the add-ons for your browser … more power to you.

Final Words: Remove Unused and Unsupported Safari Extensions

Safari will regularly inform you when there are extensions that slow down browsing or when they are no longer supported by Safari. Be sure to remove or delete these extensions.

There may also be instances when extensions can slow down browsing if they are installed but not enabled. So, be sure to enable Safari extensions after installing them.

8 Useful Safari Extensions to Try in 2024

Add more functionality with these add-ons to save links, translate text, block ads, and more

  • Swansea University, Staffordshire University

safari extension download manager

Like Chrome, Safari isn't just a stagnant web browser, it also has additional functionality via its Safari Extension plugins which take seconds to install . A form of add-on, Safari extensions now come bundled with relevant Mac apps, as well as via the App Store.

Whether you're looking for productivity hacks, easy ways of saving money on your shopping, or ways to make your browsing experience more pleasant, there's a Safari extension for you.

If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation.

Ad blocker: Adblock Plus

Easy to set up.

Free, open source tool.

Support sites by allowing "acceptable ads."

Settings can be a little tricky.

No one likes obtrusive ads when trying to read an interesting article online. Adblock Plus makes it simple to block ads and tracking ads that bug you, while "safelisting" websites that you want to see all the ads for.

Adblock Plus takes a responsible approach to ads with an option allowing for "acceptable ads," appreciating that website owners still need to generate revenue, while saving you the hassle of the worst kind of ads.

Easy Coupon Codes: Honey

Easy to browse.

Coupons from over 30,000 sites.

Automatic coupons applied.

Most coupons are for the U.S. only.

Online, you can find thousands of coupon codes and offers, but it's likely that you forget to look them up until you've already ordered something. At the touch of a button, you can open Honey to the side of Safari, and check out the coupons available to you.

The extension offers up plenty of popular retailers such as Macy's, Bloomingdale's, eBay, and Sears. Just tap on the name of the retailer, and you can look up coupons, as well as details on how long ago they worked correctly. Honey also has a reward structure for extra bonuses.

Cinema Style Lighting Effect: Turn Off the Lights

Neat atmospheric lighting effect.

Several customization options.

Need to load the separate app to change settings.

Clunky interface.

One of the most effective things at the cinema is how the lights go down and you can focus solely on the cinema screen. Turn Off the Lights offers that same kind of effect on your laptop or desktop.

When on YouTube or another video based site, click the lightbulb icon on Safari, and the lights around the video playing are immediately dimmed. You can focus on the screen itself rather than everything going on around it.

To get the full effect, you need to tweak some settings, but it's a neat way of adding some atmosphere when watching a video.

Grammar Checker: Grammarly

Simple and clear writing suggestions.

Grammar tips and spelling corrections.

Free to use.

You need a subscription to get the most from it.

Grammarly is there for those times when you're not quite sure if your spelling or grammar is up to scratch. It highlights issues via a red line underneath a word and allows you to easily correct them, whether you happen to be typing a Facebook status or a blog post.

It's a useful service that's like a little nudge in the right direction when trying to improve your writing ability. The free version offers helpful tips, but a subscription offers the most vlaue.

Password Management: LastPass

Extra layer of protection for passwords.

Works across devices.

A little convoluted to set up.

Doesn't always work seamlessly.

Safari has built-in password management, but LastPass is much better at the job. It works across multiple devices and also gives you somewhere to store files and notes securely.

A lot of the time, you'll need to delve into the separate app to use it fully, but the Safari extension gives you the ability to generate secure passwords, quickly fill in forms, or add notes, all directly from your browser. It's a real game changer for security and privacy concerns.

Link Saving: Pocket

Great for storing links for later reference.

Handy Save-to-Pocket button.

Organize links with tags and labels.

You need to sign up first.

How often do you find yourself looking at a great long-form article and realizing you don't have the time to read it right now? With Pocket, click the "Save to Pocket" button, and the link saves to your account so you can easily consult it later on.

While you need an account to use Pocket, it works across multiple devices and you can tag and label articles so that everything is neatly organized.

Picture in Picture: PiPer

Supports many different video sites.

Free and open source site.

Liable to dent your productivity.

Being able to multitask is always a valuable skill. While you can switch between windows and tabs, it hasn't been possible to have YouTube or Netflix running alongside what you're working on in Safari.

PiPer changes all that. Via its extension, you can easily place a video in the corner of your screen, allowing you to continue working while the video plays to the side. It's a great tool for juggling multiple things at once.

Translation: Translate

Translates from dozens of languages.

Use the translate button to convert text.

You need to poke around in settings to gain full benefits.

No free version.

One of the best things about Chrome is its ability to translate websites for you. Translate brings that functionality to Safari.

With this extension, you can visit a website, tap the translate button, and Translate converts everything to English via Google Translate or Bing Translate. It takes a moment or two but you can see it being converted before your eyes, which is neat. Translations are reasonably accurate too.

The 7 best free Safari extensions for the Mac

Jackie Dove

Browser extensions add specific capabilities to Safari by reading and modifying web content to promote an integrated browsing experience that’s tailored to your needs. There are two places to find Apple-approved Safari extensions: The App Store and the Safari Extensions Gallery webpage .

With Safari 12 on macOS Mojave and iOS 12, Apple revised the way its native web browser operates with extensions. Whereas in the past, you could easily download an extension from a developer, today you must download and install a Mac app or an Apple approved extension from the Safari Extensions Gallery page. The gallery is still operative for browser versions as far back as version 9, and is still considered a safe way to download and install Safari extensions. Regardless of the browser version, all apps from the App Store and Gallery page can update automatically.

Safari 12 blocks legacy extensions from third-party sources, and is now in the process of deprecating its own Extensions Gallery. It quit accepting new Gallery extension submissions at the end of 2018, accelerating a transition away from the Gallery in favor of the App Store. Many extensions continue to work just fine in Mohave’s latest browser.

Right now, there’s not much to the browser extension section of the App Store, which you can access via the Safari > Safari Extensions menu. Of the 66 App extensions currently available, only 27 are free. Another half dozen are 99 cents and the rest range in price to $19.99. Here are the best of the free extensions from both sources.

Ghostery Lite

Ghostery Lite is the free version of Ghostery that blocks ads and trackers that transmit and receive user information. Using the browser’s own Content Blocker API, the extension discards content, cookies, and tracking scripts to cut down on the information Safari shares with other websites, without sacrificing performance.

You can customize Ghostery from the toolbar button by choosing either the default setting or individually blocking some ads while leaving others for sites you want to support. You can also use the extension to control analytics, audio or video players, adult content and more.

When you come across multi-lingual web content, it’s distracting not to be able to read it in context. Translate lets you translate pages from any language to any other language via either the Microsoft or Google Translate function. You can also choose from a host of other translation services via the toolbar button, contextual menu, or keyboard shortcut. nWithin the settings you can also choose whether to translate pages automatically or manually and choose to set up a preferred service region.

An updated Mac App Store version called TranslateMe costs $9.99.

Sometimes webpage content is just too small (or large). You can fix such issues with Zoom , a simple extension that lets you adjust the scale of content on any webpage.

Just invoke the app from the toolbar, and you get a slider that spans from 0 to 400 percent, making any size text or images easier to see in a full page context. You can adjust sizes with the slider or the plus or minus buttons. A Default button immediately reverts the page to 100 percent.

TrafficLight

The web often seems like a giant mirror looking inward at every user, spying and recording most activities for both commercial and nefarious purposes. Bitdefender, the company behind the popular anti-virus program of the same name, offers the TrafficLight Safari extension as an advanced malware protection filter that guards your browsing experience against phishing attacks. It finds hidden trackers that follow and analyze your browsing activity, while a safe search feature specifically monitors search results to warn users about malware and fraudulent websites.

Content scaling can be an issue on some websites, with some images especially difficult to decipher. HoverSee enlarges all images and image-based video links as you hover your mouse over them and shows any available descriptions alongside the preview.

It works especially well on thumbnail images like Facebook and Twitter, links to image galleries, and direct image links. If you hover on YouTube, it will automatically play your video in its magnified mode. You can adjust visual display delay, minimum and maximum zoom, white list or black list certain sites, use a hot key to control zoom on specific images, autoplay or mute videos and more.

This tweak upgrades Safari’s download manager with media importing & more

safari extension download manager

When Apple released iOS & iPadOS 13 last Summer, one of the exciting new features that the company added to the iPhone and iPad experience for the very first time was a built-in download manager for the native Safari web browser. As necessary as this was to make Apple’s platforms both usable and competitive with the rest of the mobile device market, it still left quite a bit to be desired — par for the course when it comes to Apple.

Jailbreakers have significantly more options to choose from when it comes to augmenting this user experience, and with the help of a recently-updated jailbreak tweak dubbed Safari Downloader+ by iOS developer Jalal Ouraigua , jailbreakers can both expect more and get it, especially in terms of the Safari file-downloading experience. The all-new version 5.0 of the Safari Downloader+ adds full support for iOS & iPadOS 13 for the first time.

So why would users need Safari Downloader+ following the release of iOS 13? The simple answer is that this tweak incorporates a plethora of handy utilities to make downloading certain things from different websites easier.

For starters, Safari Downloader+ includes handy buttons to aid with downloading media from popular video hosting websites including Dailymotion, Facebook , Instagram, Vimeo, and YouTube to name a few. Then, after downloading said media, users will then be able to easily import it to their media library for offline viewing whenever they want.

As depicted in the screenshot examples above and below, Safari Downloader+ bakes itself directly into the Safari web browser user interface. It appears as a download button just to the left of the tabs button, and by tapping on it, users can interface with all their previous downloads and configure the Safari Downloader+ tweak however they want to suit their use case.

safari extension download manager

You’ll also notice that the media downloading and importing options are simplistic and easy to follow. Upon using the tweak on a supported media-hosting website, you can choose the download quality, where it gets saved, and then monitor download progress via the built-in download manager interface. Once finished, you can use powerful tools to fetch metadata and then incorporate those downloads into your native media library via any app of your choosing.

As for configuration, Safari Downloader+ comes with plenty:

safari extension download manager

Here, users can:

  • Automatically detect MME types
  • Enable or disable the “open in YouTube” option
  • Enable or disable the “show welcome slides” option
  • Enable or disable vibration upon completed download
  • Enable or disable notifications upon completed download
  • Enable or disable two-finger swipe to dismiss
  • Select supported file types and compressed file types
  • Configure the maximum number of allowed concurrent downloads
  • Configure the maximum number of allowed concurrent imports
  • And much more…

In short, while iOS 13’s native Safari download manager lets you download files that were meant to be downloaded, it tends to be somewhat limited when compared with Safari Downloader+’s built-in media downloading capabilities for third-party websites. Furthermore, iOS 13’s native Safari download manager doesn’t come with the same powerful media importing capabilities that Safari Downloader+ does, which means the tweak brings a lot more to the table then a stock iOS 13 device would.

Those interested in giving Safari Downloader+ a try can purchase the tweak from the Packix repository for $3.99 . Safari Downloader+ supports jailbroken iOS 12 and 13 devices, which also makes it a great option even for iOS 12 users who don’t have access to a native Safari download manager at all.

Do you plan to upgrade your device’s native Safari downloading capabilities with the new Safari Downloader+ tweak? Share why or why not in the comments section below.

Install DownThemAll now!

Downthemall 4.4 june 20, 2022.

I made a new release today. It was already approved by mozilla for Firefox, and hopefully will be approved soon for Chrome and Edge by Google and Microsoft respectively, as well.

This release fixes some issues, updated translations, and added a *pagetitle* renaming tag.

Full changelog .

I also noticed that my Opera account just went “missing” a while back. I will have to investigate what happened there when I have some time. For the time being, Opera users can install the extension from the Chrome Web Store, I think.

Thanks again to anybody who contributed, be it people donating some money, reporting bugs, making pull requests, or translating the add-on. Your support is appreciated!

Recommended Firefox extension! November 26, 2019

Thanks to Scott DeVaney, who first reached out to me, and “zephyr” from the mozilla Add-ons Editors team and maybe others, who reviewed the extension, DownThemAll! is now listed as a Recommended Firefox extension.

The old DownThemAll! (up to version 3.0) was a long term recommended add-on, too, and I am happy that the WebExtension now is as well.

Recommended means that the mozilla team did a thorough review of DownThemAll!, both in code and basic functionality, and found no issues that would put users at risk, and that the extension does not contain any nasty surprises like undisclosed user tracking either (DownThemAll! does not include any tracking, of course, but now you got it confirmed by mozilla).

It also means that future updates will be thoroughly reviewed by mozilla as well before they get published.

Existing users do not have to do anything, as updates are automatic. New users on Firefox will now see the Recommended badge on the Add-on listing page .

Recommended!

Best Download Manager for Mac: 13 Top Solutions of 2024

avatar

Using of  download manager for Mac  makes downloading faster and easier, as well as offers useful management options like speed control, download scheduling, and more. All these criteria perfectly fit in Folx, making it the best download manager. However, there are other solutions worth considering.

If you often download torrents, movies, etc, from the Internet, the  download manager for Mac  will make your life much easier and save you time and space on your hard drive. There are many download managers available, and the purpose of this article is to give you an idea of what application might work best for your needs.

Top 13 Download Managers for Mac That are Worth Your Time:

Users situation:.

I have been a long time Windows user but I recently bought a macbook. On Windows, I used IDM (Internet Download Manager) for all my downloads. Are there any similar download managers on macOS which support resuming downloads, refreshing download addresses and multiple connections?

Folx Download Manager

If you’re looking for an easy-to-use and powerful downloader for Mac, Folx is definitely worth considering. It’s extremely user-friendly and is fully compatible with Apple’s latest operating system.

Folx offers two versions: the free version and a PRO version. The free version of this download manager for Mac includes all the essential features and is ideal for those who do not download content from the Internet on a regular basis. However, by upgrading to Folx PRO, you’ll get the most out of your downloads and unlock features like built-in torrent search, password saver, smart speed control, and more.

On top of that, Folx works with all popular browsers: Safari, Firefox, Chrome, and Opera. You can easily integrate Folx via its plugin in the Safari browser’s context menu and use it as a Safari download manager.

The application sorts all kinds of files for your convenience.

  • Allows you to assign each of your downloads with tags
  • Offers full torrent client compatibility
  • Can be assigned as your primary torrent downloader
  • Supports magnet links to download torrents
  • Allows you to set automatic speed control on your downloads and schedule downloads at specific times
  • Splits downloads into multiple threads, which can significantly improve the speed at which they download
  • Fully compatible with Apple Music (formerly iTunes)
  • Can save your login credentials for multiple torrent trackers and websites you use on a regular basis
  • Has an excellent built-in torrent search option.
  • Advanced features like the built-in search torrent tool and scheduler are only available in the PRO version. The price starts from $19.95.

Supported OS:  macOS

Price:  free, Upgrade is available for $19.95/1 Mac or $39.95/2 Macs

User rating:  4.2/5 on  CNET

Conclusion:  In our opinion, this has to be the best download manager Mac users can find. Folx offers a huge range of features that can be easily used by users with even a limited understanding of how a download manager works.

Thanks to its full torrent compatibility, it’s a really useful Mac download manager for anyone who uses this download method. It’s also got good speeds and plenty of options that let you customize the way that you download files.

While you do have to invest some money for the PRO versions, it’s a low price and one that’s affordable by just about anyone. Whatever you’re looking for, this is a great option with tons of features and top speeds.

How to Use Folx Download Manager for Mac

  • Download  and install Folx.

2. Copy the link to the file you want to download.

3. Open Folx and choose New task in File menu or simply press “+” button in the main app window.

4. Choose where to save downloaded file and assign one or more tags to your download, so you can easily find it later.

5. Configure additional download settings (for PRO users): select the number of simultaneous download threads, schedule download for later start, set up saved authentication credentials.

6. Press “OK” and wait until the download is finished.

Top Mac Download Managers

Other apps making it to the best downloader for mac, transloader.

Transloader  is one more best download manager for Mac that helps you start downloading any files on your Mac computer by using your iPhone or iPad. The desktop and mobile versions are connected to each other using iCloud, after which you can upload files to your desktop computer from mobile devices.

Transloader offers you convenient and enhanced download management where you can find such features as downloading on multiple Macs, set time for download, remote login to download, and way more. The mobile version of the app is free whereas the desktop version will cost you $9.99.

Transloader downloads on Mac remotely.

  • Easy-to-use
  • Accessible via the Share menu
  • Notifications when the downloads are completed
  • Download scheduling.
  • Sometimes link synchronization via iCloud is not very fast.

Supported OS:  macOS, iOS

Price:  free 7-day trial, then $9,99/month

User rating:  4/5 on  Mac App Store

Conclusion:  Transloader can greatly simplify downloading files to a desktop computer while using only an iPhone or iPad at hand. At first glance, it may seem that there is nothing special in this download manager. But if the user is often on the road, actively moves around the city, or often writes down files on the mobile device that need to be downloaded, the application will be very useful and save a lot of time.

Free Download Manager

Another best download manager for Mac to check out is called  Free Download Manager . FDM does everything the best download manager Mac should do: resumes broken downloads, increases download speed, adjusts available bandwidth, schedules activity, and even supports BitTorrent protocol. All these features for zero price make FDM a solid choice. It is also compatible with the latest macOS version.

Download speed is limited.

  • It’s completely free
  • Like most download managers, FDM increases download speed, adjusts available bandwidth
  • One of only two download managers for Mac that combine torrent with regular downloading.
  • One thing to note about FDM is that it was originally released as open-source software, so older versions are susceptible to malware. Be sure to download this app from the original vendor.

Supported OS:  macOS, Windows, Linux

Price:  free

User rating:  3.2/5 on  Trustpilot

Conclusion:  As the name suggests, one of the great benefits of this app is the fact that it’s completely free. It also pairs torrenting with conventional downloading, which is a welcome change.

Beyond that, it has many of the organization and pause/resume features that we’ve seen in other apps. Obviously, the main issue is the fact that, as a very new app, it’s particularly vulnerable to malware. That’s definitely something you’ll want to bear in mind if you’re concerned about your computer’s security.

Progressive Downloader

Progressive Downloader  is among the best download manager for Mac apps because it offers a wide variety of features. It can resume interrupted downloads, offers multi-threaded downloading, browser integration, etc. Progressive Downloader also has a built-in mirror search option to help find mirrors (copies of the same file you’re downloading but in different locations) for large files.

The application is best suited for advanced users.

  • Tons of features - this is a great piece of software for those Mac users who download multiple files every day
  • Seems to be compatible with Mac’s newest operating system.
  • The download speed acceleration leaves a lot to be desired, as Progressive is only capable of splitting downloads into three threads.

User rating:  4.4/5 on  MacUpdate

Conclusion:  This downloader app Mac solution is pretty good, though it does fall down quite badly where it matters most. There are plenty of useful functions such as pausing downloads, and thankfully the app might work fine with the latest macOS. It also has a built-in feature that lets you use mirror sites, which is handy.

However, the big issue is the low download speed. Downloads can only be split into three threads, which isn’t much when you consider that similar products offer a lot more. If it wasn’t for the low speeds, this would be a really great choice.

FlareGet  is primarily known as a download manager for Linux. Linux is by far the most popular open-source operating system but it’s not a commonly used download manager for Mac. Again, “open-source” means that the actual code that runs FlareGet is available for anyone to use and customize. But, FlareGet seems to operate on the latest macOS just fine, too. Its interface is simple if a bit dated.

The application doesn't download torrents and is limited in formats.

  • Offers full metalink support - meaning that you can use FlareGet to replace your chosen Internet browser’s default download manager
  • Allows splitting files into 32 threads.
  • Most of FlareGet’s most helpful features are only available on the PRO version, which will set you back 20 bucks
  • Again, unless you’re a software developer or code guru, FlareGet is just overkill for the average Mac user
  • The last update was in 2020
  • Is not compatible with Apple Silicon Macs.

Price:  free, Pro subscription costs $19.99/1 license

User rating:  3.8/5 on  SourceForge

Conclusion:  This download manager for Mac and Linux is more of an option for people who understand the ins and outs of the software. If you really know your stuff, you can use this open-source app to download files, and the download speeds really are impressive – something to take into consideration.

However, for the vast majority of Internet users out there, this is probably not the ideal solution. While it has its merits, you need a lot of background understanding to really make it work for you.

iDownloader

iDownloader  continues our list of Mac download tools. The tool provides multipart download, allows scheduling, and can detect copied URLs from browsers. Besides downloading, it can also speed up download tasks. iDownloader integrates with web browsers via its extensions, supports download scheduling, and can resume the download from where it is left if the connection is lost.

A simple application, but if all the basic functions.

  • Scheduling downloads at the most suitable hours
  • Integration with browsers
  • There are various ways to create a new download
  • Resuming paused downloads.
  • Downloads large files rather slowly
  • The last update was in 2017
  • Sometimes the file is not downloaded completely.

User rating:  4.5/5 on  Mac App Store

Conclusion:  In general, iDownloader is quite a good download manager for Mac as it downloads media content from various websites. It comes with a neat interface, so you are unlikely to have any difficulty using it. However, it lacks a few features: for example, it doesn’t download torrents. This product is free, but there are in-app purchases.

Leech  is another contender among the best download manager Mac solutions. The main focus of Leech is to smoothly integrate with your Internet browser. Its interface is simple – drag and drop a URL into the app and you’re good to go.

You also have the option to set a username and password for corresponding servers. E.g. if you have a premium account on uploaded.net for high downloading speed, you can set up automatic login to your account whenever Leech catches the link from uploaded.net. No need to have any extensions for web browsers in order to use automatic download link catching.

Download and manage files with ease

  • Lightweight - meaning it won’t take up much space on your hard drive
  • Very simple to use, appealing user interface
  • Reported to be available on Mac’s newest OS.
  • Some users complain that Leech does not offer enough options when it comes to setting up "rules" for your downloads.

Price:  free (in-app purchase $6)

User rating:  3.3/5 on  Mac App Store

Conclusion:  If you’re looking for a pared-down download manager Mac app, this could be a good choice for you. First off, it takes up very little space on your hard drive. It’s also been designed with simplicity in mind, meaning that you will probably not struggle to make use of it.

However, obviously, this simplicity isn’t ideal for everyone. Leech is not a great choice if you want to be able to customize how you download and organize your files. While it’s a good, easy option, better choices give you much more control.

Xtreme Download Manager

We consider  Xtreme Download Manager  to be among the best download managers for Mac because of its pleasing user interface and its lightweight size.

This Mac app downloader also boasts that it can increase your download speed by up to 500%, but we’re not so sure about that. It does, however, offer a ton of features – including download scheduling – so you can set up your Internet downloads to begin at times when you’re away from your computer.

Powerful and optimized Download-Engine for Mac.

  • Clean and intuitive user interface makes it easy to use, even for beginners
  • Has the capability to automatically identify the type of file you’re downloading and sort it into an appropriate category - i.e., documents, movies, music, etc.
  • Xtreme DM does not currently have the capability to automatically resume interrupted downloads
  • Not currently supported by some popular Internet browsers, including Firefox
  • Xtreme DM is currently not available on Mac’s latest OS.

User rating:  4.4/5 on  CNET

Conclusion:  As a download manager that has been designed to be accessible to anyone, this program largely succeeds. They’ve come up with a clear interface that’s easy to use. There are also plenty of useful features, such as reconnecting when a connection is dropped.

However, there are a few issues regarding compatibility. Xtreme doesn’t work with the latest macOS. It also is not supported by Firefox, which is surprising given how popular that browser is. If you’re looking for a straightforward choice, depending on what software you use, this could be a good option.

Neat Download Manager

Neat Download Manager  is a lightweight, simple-to-use, and free download manager for Mac. Neat is a newcomer to the download manager scene and it is quickly making a name for itself, but its developers are still working through some kinks. We’re looking forward to seeing Neat’s developers improve upon its features, though, as it is a promising app, and it might be available on Mac’s newest OS.

The application is under development, so the functions are limited for now.

  • Offers Internet browser extensions so you can easily download audio and video content from a variety of websites
  • Uses a dynamic segmentation algorithm that increases your download speed significantly
  • Only takes up 1 MB of space on your hard drive.
  • As we mentioned, Neat is a relatively new software, so bugs are not uncommon
  • Not a lot of features yet. Currently only has basic downloading capabilities, such as acceleration and segmentation.

Supported OS:  macOS, Windows

User rating:  4.1/5 on  Softpedia

Conclusion:  While it hasn’t yet quite fulfilled its potential, Neat still promises great things in the future. One of the most striking things about it is the fact that it only takes up a single megabyte on your hard drive – pretty remarkable. It’s got plenty of compatibility with browsers and boasts impressive download speeds, which is obviously an important factor.

As we’ve said, the main issue is that, as a very new program, there’s not a huge amount of features on offer. Also, as with all new programs, it’s more vulnerable to viruses and malware. However, with any luck, we’ll see improvements in the future.

Download Shuttle

Download Shuttle  is one more best free download manager for Mac. It is a simple solution for managing multiple downloads and accelerating transfer speeds. Download Shuttle can also split your downloads into multiple segments and download them all at once, handle links with authentication, and includes basic, but effective, link management options.

In the app’s main window, you can see the list of your downloads, and the top toolbar has buttons for essential functions, including the option to add or remove links. Download Shuttle also offers an inspector window with detailed info about the status of each segment and supports QuickLook (access data about the downloaded file). It also seems to be compatible with the latest macOS version.

Download Shuttle is a free software only available for Mac.

  • Many users praise Download Shuttle for its ultra-fast download speed, especially when downloading very large files, such as HD movies
  • Pleasing user interface that offers features for those Mac users who are doing multiple tasks at once.
  • Does not allow the users access to their download queue.

User rating:  3.9/5 on  Mac App Store

Conclusion:  This is probably one of the best choices in our list. The major plus point about Download Shuttle is the fact that it offers very high speeds for downloading. This is mainly thanks to the fact that it divides files into multiple threads, making for much quicker downloads.

It’s also really easy to use, with a well-thought-out interface that is easy to navigate. It only falls down in a couple of places. The other problem is it doesn’t let you access your download queue, which is a pretty glaring fault.

DownThemAll

DownThemAll  is a free plug-in for Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Edge browsers that adds the ability to download files from the Web. Once it is set, the user can assign any links on the current web page to be downloaded. Using filters, it is easy to configure the program to download certain types of files. To access this free download manager for Mac, you can use the context menu or the browser tool menu.

DownThemAll lets you cancel, pause and restart downloads without worrying about losing data. Users can assign priority speeds to individual downloads, move downloads freely through the manager’s list, and download web page content in one click.

DownThemAll is a free software download manager browser extension.

  • Simultaneous downloading of several files
  • Can upload by template
  • Ability to handle almost all HTML links
  • Multi-threaded downloads
  • Automatic file renaming by mask.
  • Sometimes has issues with large downloads
  • Can be a bit unstable.

Supported OS:  Windows, macOS, Linux.

Price:  free and open source

User rating:  3.5/5 on  CNET

Conclusion:  The extension is embedded in the browser and implements its own, separate from the one installed in the browser, file downloading process, and download management interface. DownThemAll offers segmented file downloads, which means that files are downloaded in portions, thus increasing the speed of their download from slow web servers on the Internet.

User rating:  3.9/5 on  Softpedia

Conclusion:  Ninja Download Manager is another best download manager for Mac that can be useful for all users who regularly download files from the Internet. The application allows managing all the tasks so that everything is organized.

Tips on Choosing the Best Download Manager for Mac

The first thing you need to consider when choosing a download manager for Mac is what kind of app you want to use. For instance, you can use an app like Folx, that’s actually downloadable software. The other option is to use torrent clients like Vuze, which are specifically aimed at torrenting. The third option is to check out cloud-based clients. For all of these things, there are lots of different factors worth taking into account.

Obviously, the basics such as download speed are important, as are the ways in which you can organize your downloads. Some of these things can be simplified with browser integration and Apple Music integration. Since you’re looking for a Mac downloader, it’s also essential that the option you pick has maximum compatibility with the latest macOS.

Finally, one of the most obvious questions is price. While some options are 100%, you’ll often find that you need to invest to get the maximum out of a program. In this case, you may want to prioritize a solution with a one-off payment over options that expect you to pay a monthly or annual subscription fee.

So what factors determine the best download manager for Mac?

There are a few things you need to take into account when deciding on the best download manager for Mac. A few factors are fairly obvious, like ensuring that it runs safely. But there are other ones that need to be considered, that you might not have thought of. The following are some of the main things to bear in mind?

Usability  – an obvious factor is how easy the app is to use. A good download manager Mac solution will offer a straightforward interface that lets you get straight to the files and folders you need. In addition, the best managers let you search directly for files online, rather than searching through a browser and opening the file via the manager.

Websites  – ideally, a downloader will let you get audio and video files from a wide range of websites. YouTube and Facebook are obvious ones but other file sharing and social media platforms should be included as well.

Features  – the best downloaders offer a number of other features beyond simply downloading files. Some offer tools to convert to or edit video, rip to DVD, and a number of other useful features.

Speed  – there’s no point using a downloader that takes forever. You’ll want to be able to get videos of reasonable quality at the kinds of speeds you can work with.

Compatibility  – it’s essential that your downloader is compatible with the latest macOS, as well as older versions.

How Do I Use an Internet Download Manager for Mac?

Every browser comes with its own straightforward download tool, such as the Safari download manager. It’s what lets you get files from online sources. However, browser downloaders and the macOS download manager are generally not the best. They’re fine for handling the basics, but if you want anything additional, it’s worthwhile downloading a dedicated download manager for Mac.

These download manager Mac apps let you easily manage what you’re downloading, pausing and resuming when necessary, and prioritizing certain downloads over others. They also let you boost your speeds for the quickest downloads possible. Here’s how you can use one:

  • Most downloader managers for Mac use a copy and paste function. Find the source page of the download you want, and copy and paste the URL to the downloader.
  • Click start, and the downloader will start downloading the file.
  • You can use the pause and resume functions if you need to temporarily stop a download.
  • You can also schedule downloads, if you want them to start at a certain time.

As you can see, there is a variety of download software on the market these days, and choosing the best download manager for Mac can be quite time-consuming. We hope this article has helped you find what you need.

Meet Safari Web Extensions on iOS

Safari extensions

Enhance and customize the web browsing experience on iPhone, iPad, and Mac with Safari extensions. Using powerful native APIs and frameworks, as well as familiar web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, you can easily create Safari extensions in Xcode and distribute them on the App Store in the Extensions category. Xcode 12 and later supports the popular WebExtension API and includes a porting tool to make it easy to bring your extensions to Safari.

Safari Web Extensions on MacOS, iPadOS, and iOS

Blocking content

Give users the ability to block certain content types on Safari iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Built with Xcode, these app extensions are designed for speed and don’t slow down browsing. And because extensions never see what webpages users visit, user data is protected.

Web extensions

Extend the web-browsing experience by allowing Safari to read and modify web page content. Now supported in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, Safari web extensions are available on all Apple devices that support Safari. These extensions are built with Xcode and can communicate and share data with native apps — so you can integrate app content into Safari or send web data back to your app to create a unified experience.

Distributing and managing extensions

The Extensions category on the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and Mac showcases Safari extensions, with editorial spotlights and top charts to help people discover and download great extensions from the developer community. When your Safari extension is ready to be released, upload it to App Store Connect for distribution on the App Store. Apple reviews all extensions and updates to ensure they work reliably. Before submitting for review, make sure to read the guidelines for extensions .

Converting extensions from other browsers

Web extensions that work in browsers other than Safari can be converted to support Safari on Apple platforms. Run the command-line web extension converter to create an Xcode project configured with a macOS app and/or iOS or iPadOS app that includes an extension that can be enabled in Safari.

Upgrading macOS Safari web extensions to support iOS and iPadOS

It's easy to upgrade an existing macOS Safari web extension to also support iOS and iPadOS. Simply rerun your project through the command-line web extension converter tool with the --rebuild-project option. This will create a new Xcode project based on your existing project that includes extensions for these platforms.

Please make sure that you have installed the latest version of IDM .

1. For Safari you have to enable "Use advanced browser integration" option in "Options→General" IDM dialog ( arrow 1 on the image). Then check that integration into Safari is also enabled ( arrow 2 on the image).

Safari browser integration

2. If IDM shows some error message when you try to enable advanced browser integration, please click to read instruction in such case .

3. Also integration may not work when browser is launched in Admin mode. This can happen not only if you do this intentionally but when you launch Safari from some intermediary program like Total Commander that is launched in Admin mode or if you use some portable version with custom launcher.

4. If it still does not work, maybe you try to download a HTTPS link. Please note that IDM does not support HTTPS links for Safari browser. We plan to add such support in the future.
