Summers here are long and comfortably warm. Winters are a different story. They are very cold and snowy. Over the year, temperatures range from -3°F to 75°F and are rarely below -22°F or above 85°F.

During September and October, the most popular cruising months, it is recommended to bring layers as temperatures can be pleasant (15 degrees Celsius) and comfortable during the day, but cool in the morning and evening (7 degrees Celsius). A waterproof layer is important as there is usually a chance of rain every day.

If you are going to explore the fjord, take a jacket. No matter what the season is, there are stong winds on the fjord.

The currency in Canada is the Canadian dollar. Credit cards are accepted pretty much everywhere. Shops may give you back change in Canadian currency. There is an ATM across the street from the cruise terminal in front of the Au Pavillon Noir restaurant.

For up-to-date currency exchange rates, go to www.xe.com.

Wireless Internet:

Free WiFi and computers are available for use at the Bagotville Wharf cruise pavilion. You will also find WiFi in almost all restaurants and businesses in Saguenay.

French is the primary language in all of Quebec, but English is often spoken in tourist and service areas. Signage will be in French.

Where You Dock in Saguenay (Quebec) – Canada

Ships will dock or anchor at the Bagotville Wharf in La Baie on the shores of Ha! Ha! Bay. While this may seem an unusual name, it can be traced back to a French term. The “haha” means an unexpected obstacle or a dead end. Early explorers in Canada found plenty of both.

Saguenay sees more than 60,000 cruise passengers per year. The pier has even been visited by the RMS Queen Mary II.

Ships are often met by a show troupe that puts on a performance in pioneer dress and are accompanied by local music.

Tours depart from inside the cruise pavilion, where is free WiFi and computers for passenger use as well as a cafe, local artisan shops and Visitor Information Centre.

Taxis and car rentals are available from the pier.

Check out the live webcam at the cruise ship pier.

Getting Around Saguenay (Quebec) – Canada

It is about a five minute walk from the pier to La Baie’s village center. There are shops and places to eat here. This is not a large area, so you should be able to cover the few streets without needing a map. If you’re looking for more of a city-feel with more shops and restaurants, you’ll need other transportation to drive into Chicoutimi.

The buses are the hop-on, hop-off type. There are two Saguenay tours that the bus offers. One will take you to the Fjord museum, a shopping center, and a glass maker and sculpture studio.

The second tour goes to the downtown and cultural area of Chicoutimi. There will be a stop at a cathedral, a regional museum and public market. The buses will run about every 20 minutes when ships are in dock and cost approximately $30pp with tickets available onsite.

The cruise pavilion is the place to book a taxi. There you can also choose a taxi that will tour you around the region or just take you where you want to go.

Rental Cars

Again, the cruise pavilion is the place to rent a car. You will need to be at least 21 years old and present a valid, unexpired government-issued photo driver’s license. You will also need a major credit card. Driving is on the right-hand side of the road.

Shopping In Saguenay (Quebec) – Canada

There is no shortage of shopping in Saguenay. The city has five downtown centers, Arvida, Chicoutimi, Jonquiere, Kenogami and La Baie (where the ship docks). Each city center has shopping and boutiques and restaurants. From La Baie to the furthest center of Jonquiere, it is approximately a 30 minute drive.  Chicoutimi is more of a “city” and has the largest number of offerings in one area.

If you’re looking for some souvenirs, much of what the province of Quebec is known for is food related, so keep a look out for local maple syrup, cheese from a fromagerie, sweets and baked goods from a boulangerie, especially a creamy, delicious type of fudge called sucre a la creme, wine and other local alcohol.

Les Galeries de la Baie – 2 kms from pier

This small shopping complex closest to the port, has men’s, women’s and children’s clothes, a bank, liquor store, dollar store, jewelry store, home store and groceries.  There are also often pop-up stores featuring items from local artisans.

Place du Royaume – 17 kms from pier in Chicoutimi

The largest shopping mall in the area, Place du Royaume has brand name and local stores including Walmart, Sephora, Tommy Hilfiger, Old Navy and a food court with McDonalds, KFC and Starbucks.

Route des Artisans

The Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean Crafts Corporation has created a “craftsmans route” comprised of more than 70 artisans who specialize in different materials such as wood, glass, textiles, metal, ceramic, leather and more.

While many artisans are in the Chicoutimi area, the featured artists that are closest to the port are:

Conception Cuir , a leather artist who makes bags and wood and leather furniture. They are located a 4 minute walk south of the pier on Rue Victoria in La Baie.

L’atelier-boutique a Moi de Moi, does beautiful silkscreen printing on shirts, cushions, bags and much more, all inspired by the nature and animals of the region.

Click this link to a see list of artisans , or here to a list of maps where all the shops are located.

Bon Delices et Peches – 18 km from pier, in Chicoutimi

This delicious shop has been making their own chocolate onsite for 20 years and also offers gelato.  It will be hard to not try one of everything!

Dining In Saguenay (Quebec) – Canada

Quebec’s cuisine has its roots in 16th century French dishes. Today’s cuisine has been influenced by Quebec’s history of fur trading, the seasonality of ingredients, and what early settlers traded. Poutine is distinctly Canadian and is a mix of fries, gravy and cheese curds. Pea soup, tourtiere (a meat pie), and feves au lard (beans, bacon and molasses) are also dishes that are traditional to the area. Quebec is the largest producer of maple syrup in the world. They have also created over 700 different kinds of cheese. The region also has the mother lode of blueberries, and you will even find them in breakfast sausage. You will find no shortage of restaurants and unique and delicious food in Saguenay.

Know that when ordering in restaurants, if you ask for an entree it is an appetizer in French. A main course is called a plat. Also, “dinner” is often eaten at mid-day, while supper is an evening meal.

Restaurants Close to the Port

Bistro cafe summum la baie – located just outside port, european, north american, vegetarian, french, bbq.

This busy bistro offers delicious breakfast lunches and suppers with local offerings of seafood, cheeses and beer. Staff are friendly and there is lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Enjoy a coffee and desert or a full meal. They also have a location in Chicoutimi.

La Grange aux Hiboux – 6 minute walk south from port

Canadian, french.

With views of the fjord, this small bistro uses local ingredients to inspire their soups, salads, and main dishes. Open in the evenings only.

O’Gelato et Cacao – 3 min walk from port

Cafe, ice cream.

Stop by this shop to grab a treat to enjoy on your walk around town. Reviewers say the gelato rivals those you’d find in Italy. For a cooler day, the hot chocolate is made with melted chocolate, or have a tea or coffee. Pastries and local products are also available.

Top Restaurants in the Saguenay Area

Restaurant le bergerac – 3919 rue saint-jean, jonquiere – 25 kms from pier, european, caribbean, french cuisine.

In business since 1995, this small restaurant has an extensive wine list and a “creative fine dining” menu. Located in an old home in downtown Jonquiere, they grow their own herbs for their dishes. They serve Jamaican jerk-style mahi-mahi, filet mignon with wild mushrooms and Yukon Gold potatoes.

Boefish – 1303 boul. Talbot, Saguenay – 17 kms from pier

Steakhouse, mediterranean, barbecue.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Boefish (@boefish_restaurants)

This upscale restaurant specializes in steaks and fresh Mediterranean fish. The octopus salad and lobster pasta are favorites. They also have surf and turf platters to share. Try the IPA beer or an offering on the extensive wine list to pair with dinner. This restaurant is open for dinner only.

Temaki Sushi Bar – 317 Racine Street E, Chicoutimi, 19 kms from pier

Sushi, japanese.

There is an emphasis on sushi, but you can also get miso soup, cucumber salad, edamame and desserts as well as Waygu steaks and sausages. They have tempura veggie egg rolls and a spicy Japanese crab. The smoked salmon roll is also recommended. Everything is fresh and made-to-order and the restaurant is open at 2pm Wednesday to Saturday if you fancy a late lunch.

Things To Do in Saguenay (Quebec) – Canada

Saguenay fjord.

At 146 miles long, Saguenay fjord is one of the ten longest fjords in the world, with a long glacial valley and rocky cliffs. It is the only inhabited fjord in North America. The area surrounding the fjord is rugged and mountainous, with cliffs up to 1,150 feet high.  Cruises will offer tours like Zodiac rides in the fjord or get the view from above in a seaplane.

Musee du Fjord – 3346 boul. de la Grande-Baie Sud, La Baie, 4.6 kms south of pier

Here you can learn all about the Saguenay Fjord in a fun and interactive environment. You will be able to both see and touch some of the fjord’s living organisms. There are multimedia exhibits and 3-D films. There are 650 types of sea life in the aquarium. Wander by yourself, or join a guided walk at low tide to dig for minerals and plants. Tickets are available to purchase online.

Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay – 45 kms (40 min drive) from pier

This magnificent park is a wonder to explore. If you don’t have the time on your cruise stop, you should try to get back when you do have time to explore. The park offers the opportunity to be in the middle of nature at its best. You can backpack, hike, kayak, fish, sail and bike. This area has extraordinary chances for wildlife watching or an expedition into the backcountry. Take a look at this tour which leaves from the cruise terminal.

Rental Car in Saguenay in mid-October/noon-7/Driving Route?

By MalibuCA , February 22, 2016 in Canada/New England

Cool Cruiser

Our ship will be in Saguenay on October 16 from noon to 7 pm. We have arranged for a rental car, and we would like to drive to the Saguenay Fjord National Park. Is this doable? Can you suggest specific places where we should drive within the park so that we can see beautiful parts of the park but still make it back to the ship on time? We are not looking for hiking paths specifically, but rather we would like to drive through the park where we can see beautiful fall foliage (hopefully!) However, we have no problem with getting out of the car and walking to see something worth seeing. We just don't want to chew up too much of our precious time with hiking trails. We are from Southern California, and we don't get to see the leaves change color very much, so this is a real treat for us. I welcome all suggestions and appreciate the help.

IWantToLiveOverTheSea

We'll be there a week or so before you. I haven't gotten much info about Saguenay except that there's an Enterprise car rental place there, which you might already know, as you've rented a car. However, if you go to tomsportguides.com, look under port guides, Canada, you'll find a free, downloadable guide for Saguenay written by an avid cruiser. I know Tom mentions the park, as I'm interested in it as well, but forget just what info he provides. His guides are usually very helpful, though, so I would definitely give it a look!

I will be there about two weeks before you. Since I also intend to rent a car, I was curious as to which car rental company you are using and will the car be delivered to you at the port? I also highly recommend reading Tom's port guides. He goes into great detail and gives quite a lot of useful information.

I'm not the original poster, so I don't already have a car reserved. However, I started exploring rental a bit and can perhaps shed some light on car rental in the area. Saguenay is really the name for the area, not the actual town where cruise ships dock. Therefore, if you google for car rental places using La Baie, Canada, you MAY have better luck than using Saguenay. Here's what I've found out to date:

http://tourisme.saguenay.ca/en/media/viewst/promo/croisieres_internationales/horaire_des_navires_2016_en.pdf is port schedule (La Baie area). This is useful in seeing if there are other cruise ships visiting with you.

Info from another post on Cruise Critic; assume it's fairly up to date/accurate:

Address: 3380 AV DU PORT

Phone: (418) 697-0404

Approximate cost after tax: $CAD 48

Hours: 8am-5pm M-F, CLOSED WEEKENDS Can’t drive you back to port after 4pm, but can drop keys & take taxi back for about $12 CAD.

We’ll be there on a Sunday. Closest place open is Budget at airport, 6 miles, $40 on Expedia but forget if that's CDN or US, but probably US. Assume we'd need a cab to airport both ways.

Tom's Port Guide may include info on rental cars, but I have not read whole thing yet, so don't know.

Tom's Port Guide says: Car rental is best booked in advance with National Car Rental for car pick up at the Cruise Pavilion in La Baie. Contact information is Location Talbot, [email protected] tel 418-549-3888 or 1-800-549-3888. If you rent a car, be sure to tell them you are arriving by cruise ship at the La Baie Terminal and want to pick up the car there or have them arrange transport for you to the car.

Thanks, I knew I was looking at La Baie, and I too have done some internet investigation. I was just curious as to whether the original poster had arranged for dockside drop off. I have a worse Sunday problem in that I will be in Charlottetown, PEI on Sunday and it looks like all of the car rental agencies are closed on Sunday.

  • 1 month later...

5,000+ Club

Just to update this a little: I contacted National Car Rental, using the email address provided above, and asked if they would rent a car to me on a Sunday, and if so, if they would deliver it to the port at La Baie rather than make me go to the airport to pick it up. They said that was fine, and I made a reservation by email. They charge $76 Canadian plus for a mid-sized car (Toyota Corolla or similar) and that includes unlimited mileage. Once we get ashore, we just go to the National counter or kiosk inside the Welcome Center. Sounds quite easy.

To the poster who wondered about renting a car on a Sunday on PEI, I would recommend calling the rental companies to ask. Online, National's website showed that nothing was available at the cruise terminal in La Baie (Saguenay) on Sundays. However, that it NOT what I was told when I emailed the local National vendor. You just never know.

Saguenay Quebec Port Guide

You’ll find a hidden getaway about 120 miles south of Quebec City in Saguenay, where rows of multi-colored homes look beyond to rolling hillsides and curl around the beautiful St. Lawrence River. While on a cruise to Saguenay, Quebec, Canada, book a tour of the town’s biggest attraction—An incredible fjord stretching 60 miles long with dramatic cliffs jutting a thousand feet into the air. The Saguenay Fjord National Park is a can’t-miss day trip (or longer) for ziplining, camping, hiking, or other outdoor pursuits.

The landscape will definitely awe you, but so will the city’s charm, where sites like the Pulperie de Chicoutimi or the Cathedral of Saint François-Xavier give a sense of the community and its history. Saguenay is your introduction to a quieter, off-the-beaten path Quebec. Whale watch along the St. Lawrence River or enjoy poutine from a patio in Chicoutimi. As a stop on a Canada and New England Cruise , Saguenay could be called a respite, an oasis of culture and nature, before hitting the remote, isolated wilderness of Northern Quebec.

Please Note: While we don't currently sail to Saguenay, you can discover the beauty of Quebec on one of our luxury Quebec City cruises . Browse our luxury cruises to Quebec City below.

The region is mostly French-speaking, and the people of Saguenay are astoundingly friendly. Don’t be surprised if you hear English from locals at tourism attractions and the cruise port.

Originally, Saguenay was a colonial French trading town divided into three main boroughs: La Baie, Chicoutimi, and Jonquière. Today’s Saguenay encompasses all those cities into one municipality. Many of the cultural sites are located in Chicoutimi, while some of the city’s best restaurants can be found in Jonquière.

Port Saguenay offers its own (free of charge) passenger tendering operations via two tender boats with capacity 125 and 175 passengers. Some boats may alternately stop in La Baie (at Port Alfred) - one of Saguenay City's three boroughs (together with Chicoutimi and Jonquiere).

Also in 2017, the port's average ship stay time increased from 8 hours (2016) up to nearly 15,5 hours.
  • For season 2018, the Port had scheduled a total of 60 calls, including the Walt Disney Cruise Line 's maiden visit with MS Disney Magic  (booked on Sept 24). Of all the 60 ship bookings, 19 were in the 12-day period (Sept 29 - Oct 12) which is the port's peak "Fall Foliage" season.

On October 6, 2016, the Cunard liner RMS Queen Mary 2 made an inaugural visit to Saguenay as a port of call on a 29-day roundtrip Transatlantic cruise from Southampton to Canada and New England (itinerary code M619C). The QM2 ship was also booked to visit Saguenay in 2017 and 2018.

Vehicles rented in Canada can be driven throughout Canada and the US.

One-Way rentals are allowed within Canada and may be assessed a one-time drop charge or mileage charge in addition to the rental rate. This is also known as an 'inter-city' fee. The return location is indicated on your rental agreement. The cost of the rental reflects the return of the vehicle to that location. Returning the vehicle to a location other than the one indicated on your rental agreement will incur a separate charge.

As a customer, you have a choice as to how you would like to pay for fuel. Option 1: Prepay Fuel This option allows the renter to pay for the full tank of gas at the time of rental and return the tank empty. No refunds will be issued for unused gas. Option 2: We Refill This option allows the renter to pay National at the end of the rental for gas used but not replace. Price per litre will be higher than local fuel prices. Option 3: You Refill This option allows the renter to return the vehicle with a full tank of gas to avoid extra fuel charges.

Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) is not insurance.  The purchase of LDW is optional and not required in order to rent a vehicle.

You may purchase optional LDW for an additional fee.  If you purchase LDW we agree, subject to the actions that invalidate LDW listed on the rental agreement, to contractually waive your responsibility for all or part of the cost of damage to, loss or theft of, the vehicle. DW does not apply to damage occurring in Mexico.

When deciding whether or not to purchase DW, you may wish to check with your insurance representative or credit card company to determine whether, in the event of damage to, or theft of, vehicle, you have coverage or protection for such damage or theft and the amount of your deductible or out-of-pocket risk.

Santa Clara car rental information

Cheap car rentals in santa clara, kayak’s top tips for renting a car in santa clara.

  • Make your trip to Santa Clara a red-carpet affair by renting a ride from one of the reputable cheap car rentals in Santa Clara. A vehicle from Santa Clara car rentals will enable you to visit Winchester Mystery House, South Bay Shores, and Rip Roaring Rapids, among other attraction sites, at your convenience. For instance, after your business meeting, you can decide to drive to the city’s Levi’s Stadium straight from San Francisco Airport, 28 miles away, at your own pace. Only the flexibility and mobility of 4X4 from cheap car rentals in Santa Clara can help you explore remote areas near the city, such as Corral Canyon OHV Area and Ulistac Natural Area located off Lick Mill Blvd.
  • While touring Santa Clara, pay close attention to people riding bikes, cycling, and pedestrians who might be jaywalking, especially when cruising through residential areas such as along Westwood, Oakmead, and Ponderosa Park neighborhoods. Some residential areas, schools, playgrounds, and parks have a speed limit of 15mph. The speed limit on certain roads keeps changing. For Example, Black Road between Thompson Road and Highway 17 Frontage Road speed limit usually changes between 20-30 mph, and that of Homestead Rd. and Pomeroy Ave. changes between 30-40 mph.
  • Like other busy cities, motorists using Santa Clara roads can find themselves stuck in traffic jams, especially between 7:00 am to 9:30 am and between 3:50 pm to 7:45 pm. To avoid spending more time than necessary on the road, avoid busy roads such as US 101 from Sausalito to Cloverdale around the bay area and highway 29 at Stice Lane Whitehall Lane around the St. Helena area. To be safe, avoid major entry and exit points, or if possible, plan your movement outside peak hours, especially during weekdays or major annual events such as Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival.
  • If you have previously been inconvenienced by public transport when traveling or paid exorbitant taxi prices, then you may want to opt for a rental car when traveling to Santa Clara, CA. Driving can be a great way to experience the city without needing to worry about when or where to start or stop your daily journey. It’s a good way to take in what Santa Clara has to offer, which is quite substantial, at your own convenience. Imagine having the flexibility to drive as far as the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is about 78 miles away, in just an hour, or driving to Big Sur, about 99 miles away, at your own pace.
  • Once you arrive at the San Jose International Airport, you’ll find the Rental Car Center across from Terminal B. If you arrive at Terminal B, it’s a short walk across Airport Drive from the baggage claim, and if you arrive at Terminal A, take the airport blue shuttle bus directly to the Rental Car Center. From here, pick up the car you rented through KAYAK from Santa Clara car rentals, including Alamo, Avis, Hertz, and National. These companies have a wide range of cars that will suit your budget and capacity needs.
  • It’s understandable that in a new city, you may want to use your phone in transit. However, throughout all of California, it’s prohibited to use your phone while driving. Getting a cell phone ticket in Santa Clara is as easy as getting a red-light ticket, both of which you should avoid to fully enjoy your trip. When driving through Palo Alto in your rental car, be wary of cyclists that may get too close without warning.
  • Hwy 17 can be quite congested in the morning and evening rush hour, which could be anywhere from 6am to 9am and 3pm and 7pm. If you need to travel during these times, give yourself extra time, especially if it rains, if there’s an accident, or if there’s ongoing construction. If possible, it would be ideal to stay in the right lane to be more comfortable as a driver in a new city. The same case applies for Hwy 1 on all counts.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Santa Clara for $35 or less
  • Book your rental car in Santa Clara at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Off-airport rental car locations in Santa Clara are around 30% cheaper than airport locations on average
  • Intermediate rental cars in Santa Clara are around 18% cheaper than other car types, on average
