From Paris/London/Amsterdam/Brussels:  You travel by comfortable high-speed trains to Hendaye on the Spanish border, where you transfer to the local Euskotren train to San Sebastian. Arrival in the evening, accommodation in a modern hotel close to the main train station. From Madrid:  Arrive in Madrid the day before, where you stay one night in a modern hotel close to Chamartin. On Day 1, travel by direct gauge-changing high-speed train to San Sebastian, over high-speed lines and classic mountain railroads. Day 2 - San Sebastian

Day off in San Sebastian, also known as Donostia. Discover this Basque seaside city with its picturesque old town and lively modern districts. Day 3 - Bilbao

In the morning you have time to visit San Sebastian/Donostia. In the afternoon, take a local train Euskotren train to Bilbao. Your tickets are valid for any train, so make the trip to Bilbao at any time during the day you like. In Bilbao you stay in a traditional hotel close to the main train station and city center.

Day 4 - Bilbao

Time for visiting Bilbao, home to the famous Guggenheim art museum, but also a lovely city in itself with a well-preserved and colorful old town. Like San Sebastian the city is lively, due to its architecture, modern allure and excellent cuisine. In the afternoon, board the local train to Santillana, leaving the Basque country. You use Europe’s largest network of narrow-gauge railways, that you will follow all the way to Ferrol. In Torrelavega you transfer to either bus or taxi for the last part of the journey to Santillana del Mar, one of Spain’s most beautiful towns. Accommodation in a traditional Spanish hotel in the town’s center.

Day 5 - Santillana del Mar

Day off in Santillana: time to visit the famous Altamira caves museum, where prehistoric objects were found. Access to the caves themselves is very restricted, but the local museum offers an exact replica of the caves and the cave paintings. Alternatively there are some beautiful beaches reachable by a 15-minute taxi ride from Santillana.

Day 6 - Llanes

Departure via bus or taxi to Torrelavega, and from there by local train to Llanes. This is a charming town on the coast and offers beautiful scenery all around it. After bringing your luggage to your hotel, visit the town’s old town with its bold mixture of architectonic styles. The town has an interesting museum dedicated to its naval history. Accommodation in a traditional hotel close to the train station and city center.

Day 7 - Oviedo

Spend the morning and afternoon in Llanes or on the beach. Highly recommended is taking a local train a few stops along the coast, and walking back along the beach and cliffs to Llanes (or the other way around). In the afternoon, take the local train further West to Oviedo. Oviedo, the capital of the Asturias region, has a beautiful medieval old town. Asturias has a cuisine all of its own, waiting to be explored in the city’s many restaurants.

Day 8 - to Santiago

Departure from Oviedo in the direction of Santiago de Compostela. The narrow-gauge train takes you to Ferrol, where you transfer to the regular Spanish express train to Santiago, where you stay in a modern hotel near the city center.

Day 9 - Santiago de Composte;a

Day off to discover the famous pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela. According to legend, the Apostle James lays buried in the city’s cathedral. Nowadays the old town is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. The city also offers a rich cultural scene, with multiple modern and classical art museums.

Day 10 - Burgos or Madrid

Ending in Paris/London/Amsterdam/Brussels:  In the morning you board the express train to Burgos, sometimes with one transfer, sometimes by direct train. You arrive in Burgos in the afternoon, the city is a 15-minute bus ride away from the main train station. Burgos is a stop on the pilgrimage to Santiago and also has a UNESCO-world heritage old town with beautiful gothic Cathedral. Accommodation in a hotel in the city center. Ending in Madrid:  Board the direct high-speed train from Santiago to Madrid. Accomodation in a modern hotel close to Atocha train station.

Ending in Paris/London/Amsterdam/Brussels:  In the late morning you board the intercity train taking you from Burgos to Irun, on the French border. For the last 10 minutes of the journey you once again take a local Euskotren train to Hendaye, in France. Accommodation in traditional hotel Le Santiago, close to the train station and hosting an excellent French-style restaurant. Ending in Madrid:  Transfer from Madrid Atocha station to Bajaras airport by local train. 

Ending in Paris/London/Amsterdam/Brussels:  Departure early in the morning by high-speed TGV train from Hendaye to Paris, where you transfer to the Eutostar train taking you to your destination of choice. A café/bistro car is available in both trains.

This Northern Spain itinerary by train takes you through some of the most underrated cities in the country. Find out how easy it is to travel around Northern Spain by train, and discover four off-the-beaten-path cities that will captivate you.

As Agatha Christie once said, “Trains are wonderful…. To travel by train is to see nature and human beings, towns and churches, and rivers, in fact, to see life.”

And I have to agree with her. Train travel is the most wonderful way to travel and you do indeed get to see the world around you in a way that you wouldn’t from any other mode of transport.

Not only is it a very romantic way to travel, but train travel is the most sustainable and eco-friendly way too. So there’s no better way to explore this lesser known area of Spain.

This 5-day Northern Spain itinerary by train includes a little bit of everything – from coastal cities and mountain views, to foodie destinations and architectural gems.

5-day Northern Spain itinerary by train

Day 1 – arrival in asturias.

Asturias is not the easiest region in Spain to get to, but with some of the best of Northern Spain on offer here, the extra effort is sure to be more than worth it. 

The quickest way to get here is by flying into Asturias airport from London. Vueling is the only international airline that flies directly, but you can fly from all over the world via Madrid. > Check the best deals on flights on Skyscanner here

If you would like to avoid flying, you could take a ferry from Plymouth to Santander . Once there, take the train from Santander to Gijón , where this 5-day Northern Spain itinerary by train starts.

Another alternative would be to take the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao . Getting from Bilbao to Gijón by train is not straight forward, so if your first port of call in Spain is Bilbao, I would recommend doing this itinerary in reverse and starting in Valladolid.

Day one of this North Spain itinerary is mostly a travel day, so take the opportunity to take it easy and settle in after you’ve arrived. 

I stayed at the Abba Playa Gijón Hotel , which is right by the beach. If you stay here, you can take a leisurely walk along the promenade, and end the day with a cocktail or two on their rooftop bar. It has wonderful views over the bay. > Book Abba Playa Gijón Hotel here

Day 2 – Gijón, ancient coastal city

Gijón is an industrial port with a history that goes back to Roman times. It is the biggest city in Asturias and the perfect place to start this itinerary of Northern Spain by train.

Discover Medieval Gijón

What started off as a small fishing village called Cimadevilla, is now a bustling city with a vibrant atmosphere. And the best way to get a feel for Gijón is to wander around both the Old Town and neighbouring areas.

The Old Town, still called Cimadevilla , was traditionally the fishermans’ quarter of Gijón. It’s located next to what once was the fishing port and is now the marina. 

Cimadevilla’s picturesque streets and squares have been witness to historical events through the ages – from Roman times, through the Middle Ages, to current times.

During the day it feels like a sleepy village, but these seemingly quiet streets come alive at night, with people gathering around the many bars and restaurants in the area.

Enjoy the best views of the bay

As you walk through the Old Town, head to Cerro de Santa Catalina (St Catherine’s Hill). On your way to the top, you will find Batería de Santa Catalina (St Catherine’s Battery), a 19th century gunnery, now the home to a skate park.

On the highest point of the Cerro is Chillida’s enormous concrete sculpture ‘Elogio del Horizonte’ ( Tribute to the Horizon ). Its size and abstract shape have led it to be dubbed as ‘King Kong’s Toilet’ by humorous locals.

This striking monument has become the symbol of the city, and from here you can enjoy sweeping views of Gijón and San Lorenzo Bay .

As you walk down from the Cerro towards San Lorenzo Beach, make sure you stop at the Roman Baths , where you can learn how the Romans used public baths. Entry is free.

Explore the Modernist architecture

If you are a fan of European cafe culture, you must not miss Cafe Dindurra , Gijon’s answer to European traditional cafes. This elegant modernist cafe can easily rival cafes in Vienna or Paris, with its majestic columns.

Built at the start of the 20th century, Cafe Dindurra was built as part of an ambitious block, whose centre was a theatre. The cafe was designed to connect directly with the theatre. Jovellanos Theatre now occupies the centre of the block.

Modernist architecture is ubiquitous in Gijón. It reveals how forward thinking the city was at the start of the last century. And this attitude has carried forward with a city that has reinvented itself from being an industrial hub to being a city designed with its residents in mind.

Corrida Street is a pedestrianised street where these two aspects of Gijón’s character come together. Don’t forget to look up as you walk down the city’s liveliest street.

Day 3 – Oviedo, city of bagpipes and cider

Founded in the 8th century, Oviedo was once the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Asturias. Although no longer a Kingdom, Asturias is a Spanish principality with a strong local identity, and Oviedo is still its capital today.

Hunt for statues that tell stories

As you arrive in Oviedo, you will see that it is very different from Gijón. Oviedo’s Old Town oozes charm in every corner, and you will want to wander aimlessly through its narrow streets, getting lost and discovering hidden squares and picturesque lanes.

Oviedo invites you to walk, and as you wander around you will notice an abundance of statues . There are over 170 scattered all over the city! Every other street, crossroad, and square has a statue offering a tribute to elements of Asturian culture. 

A couple that stood out for me were ‘La Lechera’ (The Milkmaid) in Trascorrales Square, which celebrates the milkmaids that used to distribute milk across the city with their donkeys. This practice continued until the 1970s.

I would also like to mention the statue of ‘La Regenta’ (The Regent’s Wife), which can be found in the Cathedral Square. She is the character of a 19th century Spanish fictional novel. It is a classic that most Spaniards have read at school.

While you are in the Cathedral Square, make sure you visit Oviedo Cathedral . It is an important symbol of Spanish Gothic architecture, and the Holy Chamber is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can climb up to the top of the tower for 360 degree views of the city.

Catch the bagpipe bands

If you are in Oviedo on a Saturday or Sunday, there is a good chance that you will come across one of the local bandas de gaitas (bagpipe bands) while you are in the vicinity of the Cathedral Square.

You may be surprised to see and hear bagpipes, but this wind instrument, often exclusively associated with Scotland, is an important part of music in Celtic cultures such as Asturias, Galicia, and Brittany.

Try the local cuisine of Asturias

Another element that is deep rooted in the Asturian culture is the local cuisine . Known for its seafood and its hearty mountain stews, there are a few dishes that every visitor to Oviedo (or Asturias) should try.

The most famous local dish is fabada , a heavy but delicious bean and meat stew that will leave you feeling like you’ve just had the warmest of hugs. It is the epitome of comfort food.

Another traditional Asturian dish is cachopo , the Asturian version of cordon bleu. And for dessert, arroz con leche (local rice pudding) is as Asturian as it gets.

A well known place to try any of these dishes is La Corte de Pelayo Restaurant . Their fabada has been a finalist multiple times in the fabada competition, and their cachopo has won the best cachopo award with a recipe from 1947.

When it comes to drinks, cider is king in Asturias. In fact, you cannot visit this Northern Spanish region and not go to a sidrería (cider house), where cider is served by an escanciador (cider pourer). It is one of the most popular things to do in Oviedo .

Cider in Asturias is flat, so the act of escanciar involves pouring it from a height to create bubbles that help enhance the flavour of the cider. Each pour is about two fingers’ worth of drink. More than that and the carbonisation is lost by the time you drink it.

Asturias, land of cheeses

For me, the highlight of the food I tried while in Oviedo was the cheeses.

Asturias is often referred to as the land of cheeses . With over 40 types, it is Spain’s largest cheese producer. The variety and quality is astounding!

Don’t leave without trying a local cheese board. Sidrería Tierra Astur El Vasco has more than 40 varieties of cheese on offer, so the biggest problem you’ll have will be choosing which ones to try.

If you like strong and slightly spicy cheeses, try Casín . For blue cheese lovers, I recommend trying the world-famous Cabrales . And for those who prefer mild cheeses, Afuega’l Pitu is a fantastic choice!

If after a busy day (and a full stomach) exploring Oviedo you still have the energy for more, head to Mon Street, the heart of Oviedo nightlife . With plenty of bars and pubs to choose from, you are guaranteed a good night out. But this is Spain, so make sure you don’t turn up before 11pm!

Where to stay in Oviedo

I stayed at the Gran Hotel España in Oviedo. It is located at the edge of the Old Town and within a short walk from the main attractions. My room had a big balcony with great views over the city and the surrounding hills.

It’s also conveniently located opposite Camilo de Blas , a traditional sweet and patisserie shop where you can buy carbayones , a local specialty similar to eclairs. > Book Gran Hotel España here

Day 4 – León, medieval wonders and Gaudí

Although it was my second visit to León, it was the first time I got to appreciate this historical city properly. My first visit was a quick overnight stay on my way to Santiago de Compostela while I walked the Camino .

Despite not being a religious or spiritual person, the Camino was the most important experience I’ve ever had and I’d go as far as to say it is one of my personal seven wonders of the world . 

Discover a city built for pilgrims

León was, and still is, an important stop for pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago . And this has left an important legacy in the city.

Proof of this is the Convento de San Marcos , a former convent originally built in the 12th century as a shelter for pilgrims.

It was rebuilt in the plateresque style in the 16th century, giving it its current grand appearance. Today it is a luxury hotel run by the state-owned Paradores brand.

Enter the House of Light

Another clue of how important the city has been for the Camino de Santiago, is the magnificent León Cathedral . Its grandiosity is breathtaking, but the interior will truly blow you away. 

The light coming through the 1,800 sq metres of stained glass windows will make you gasp as you walk in and look up, earning it the nickname of House of Light.

I was impressed by the largest expanse of stained glass in the Cathedral in York , but León Cathedral takes things to the next level. It is one of the largest collections of medieval stained glass in the world, so admiring it is one of the top things to do in León .

What’s even more impressive is that around 80% of the stained glass is original, with the oldest glass dating back to the 13th, when the cathedral was built. You can clearly see that its construction was inspired by French Gothic cathedrals in Reims and Amiens.

Admire the Sistine Chapel of the Romanesque Art

Another important building in medieval León is the Real Colegiata de San Isidoro de León . The original church dates from the 9th century, but it was rebuilt in the 11th and 12th centuries after being destroyed.

The church houses the tomb of St Isidore, Patron of Seville. But make sure you don’t miss visiting the Panteón Real (Royal Patheon), known as the ‘Sistine Chapel of Romanesque Art’.

This vaulted chamber contains the tombs of kings and nobles of the ancient Kingdom of León. The stunning frescos that cover the ceiling are a medieval masterpiece. Incredibly, they’ve never been restored, they have only been cleaned up.

Find reminders of Roman León

The Middle Ages was the time when León flourished, thanks to the pilgrim-related trade. But León’s beginnings go further back in time. Founded as a Roman camp, the name does not come from the word ‘lion’, but rather from the word ‘legion’, which refers to its origins.

As you walk around the Old Town, you will come across sections of the medieval walls built on top of the original Roman city walls .

One curiosity is that locals have found a way of integrating the walls in everyday life. Walk down Serradores Street and you will see how residential houses have been built into the ancient walls.

Discover Leon’s Gaudí surprise

One of the biggest surprises that León has in store for visitors, is one of only three buildings designed and built by Gaudí outside Catalonia – Casa Botines .

Known for his modernist buildings in Barcelona such as Casa Batlló, Gaudí was commissioned to design a building by two cloth merchants in 1891. The building would serve as a residence for two families and a textile warehouse.

The result was a modernist building in the medieval style. Today the building houses a Gaudí museum about the building and his work, and also a small art gallery with works by artists such as Dalí, Goya and Chillida. 

Get lost in the Barrio Húmedo

Once you finish exploring the cultural aspects of León, head to the Barrio Húmedo , literally translated as ‘wet quarter’ due to the large number of bars and restaurants located in a relatively small area.

The Barrio Húmedo is centred around Plaza de San Martín (San Martin Square), and is one of the liveliest areas in the city. It’s the perfect place to get a taste of León nightlife , and to try the local tapas and the local wines.

Make sure you try Leonese cecina – like serrano ham but from beef. It is a lot leaner, drier, and has a more intense in flavour than serrano ham.

With so much history around León, it was only fitting that I stayed at the Hotel Real Colegiata de San Isidoro , once part of the old monastery. The rooms were once monastery cells, although you wouldn’t guess it now. All the rooms have views over the old cloister or the roman walls. > Book Hotel Real Colegiata de San Isidoro here

Day 5 – Valladolid, a vibrant university city

Valladolid is often overlooked as a destination by overseas visitors travelling on a Northern Spain itinerary, unless they are interested in the world famous Easter Week celebrations.

But Valladolid was once so important that it was the capital of Spain not only once, but twice – under King Charles I in the 16th century, and again between 1601 and 1606 under King Philip III. 

It has always been at the centre of the Catholic heartlands in Spain, and this is apparent in the dozens of churches scattered around the city, and the abundance of religious art on display in its museums.

Visit the site of the first human rights debate

To understand Valladolid’s part in Spain’s religious history, it is important to visit at least one of the city’s museums, and my recommendation would be to visit the emblematic College of San Gregorio, today the National Sculpture Museum .

The museum contains an expansive collection of religious art from the Middle Ages through to the 19th century. But even if you are not into sculpture as an art, the building itself is worth visiting.

The intricate carvings on the façade will have you staring at it and admiring the elaborate details. Inside, the 15th century cloister is stunning, and the ceilings of each room throughout the museum are also worth noting.

It was in this building where the very first debate about human rights in European history took place in 1550-1551. Known as the Valladolid Debate , it concerned the rights and treatment of indigenous people by European colonisers.

There were a number of opposing views about the way natives of the Americas were being integrated into Spanish society, their conversion to Catholicism, and their rights.

Admire Valladolid’s architectural jewels

As you wander around the city, it is worth highlighting two churches. Convent Church of San Pablo , with its plateresque-style façade, is one of Valladolid’s most famous buildings. Santa María La Antigua Church is a 14th century church with the tallest Romanesque tower in Spain.

Enjoy a bird’s eye view of Valladolid

Another important building in Valladolid is the Cathedral , a large Renaissance building that was never finished due to lack of funds. You can go to the top of the tower for great views of the city and the countryside beyond.

Have a meal (or two) with wine pairing

Valladolid has one of the most recognised wine growing regions in Spain, the Ribera del Duero . It is a Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP – protected designation of origin) and it’s a region that has been producing wine for thousands of years.

Because of this, Valladolid is a great city to do some wine tasting. But why not take it a bit further and enjoy the wine by pairing it with the local food?

For a lunchtime wine pairing experience, try Vinoteca Señorita Malauva , a wine pairing boutique run by Gustavo Calvo, an expert in wine tourism that also has his own winery. The food is made with local ingredients and is delicious too.

For dinner, don’t miss Restaurante Mêlel , an innovative space where hedonism and becoming a bon viveur is at the centre of everything. This eclectic place serves surprising and creative food with well paired wines from all over Spain. My favourite thing? The beef heart ssam.

Experience the Valladolid’s bars and nightlife

Valladolid is a university city. In fact, Valladolid University is one of the oldest in Europe, dating back to the 15th century. And where there is a large university, you are guaranteed a vibrant nightlife too.

Valladolid is a city of bars and pubs. Head to Calle Paraíso , which is lined up with bars, and follow the crowds. You can’t really go wrong. Just make sure you are not out too early, as Valladolid’s party scene kicks off late.

You’ll begin today with a visit to the beautifully preserved medieval town of Santillana del Mar, before continuing for a tour of Altamira Cave. It’s often considered to be the finest example of Upper Palaeolithic cave art. After lunch, you’ll then rejoin the train for the trip into Asturian territory.

And, you’ll be welcomed to the region by Ribadesella’s charming promenade and stunning historic mansions. You’ll end the day with another sumptuous dinner, as always informed by the train’s route. Expect everything from Galician seafood to desserts of local frixuelos crepes.

Disembarking today, you’ll be brought into the region’s green heart – the Picos de Europa National Park. Your first stop is pretty Lake Enol before you continue to the Shrine of Covadonga, a thousand-year-old sacred jewel hidden away in a cragged cave. Your expert guide will bring its legends to life. Then, back on the train, you’ll wind on through verdant-green hills to Oviedo.

Known as the epicentre for Asturian Romanesque art, your guided tour will take in its tumble of old-town streets, spectacular cathedral and the 9th-century severity of the San Julián de los Prados basilica.

You’ll begin today with Avilés, a historic town blessed with colonnaded streets and a plaza fronted by fine 17th-century buildings. It’s a quiet counterpoint to your next stop Gijón, where a lively dining scene plays out over a pedestrianised streets and seafront walks take in its great industrial history. You’ll then end the day in Luarca, a charming port town backed by a steep valley and fronted by colourful fishing boats.

In between, be sure to take the time to rest up in the train’s tea room, take in the views from the panoramic lounge or enjoy the live music in the bar car. Each carriage is dressed in curated artwork and rich fabrics. Otherwise, for some intimacy, opt to take your dinner in your private suite.

Having passed over into Galicia, the train arrives into the historic town of Ribadeo. As our journey aboard the Costa Verde Express train nears its finale, we will relish a delightful breakfast while traversing the Basque landscapes en route to Bilbao, the Biscayan capital. Our exploration unfolds with a tour of the Bilbao city, followed by a lunch in one of its cherished traditional eateries. Around 4pm, we will return to the train to collect our belongings and bid a fond farewell to the crew.

Cozy rooms/cabins with wood veneer paneling, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere.

Double bed (1.20m x 1.85m), desk, wardrobe, luggage rack, minibar, and safe. The room is air-conditioned with separate regulation and has a fully private toilet, equipped with a hairdryer and a set of welcome products and toiletries.

In general, comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended during the day when we are out on our excursions, while in the evening, you can opt for more formal attire, although there is no specific dress code required. The only exception is for access to El Gran Casino de Santander on routes that include this city, where more elegant attire is required (suits and ties are not necessary, but items like shorts or sneakers are not allowed).

Slow Train Travel in Northern Spain: Narrow-Gauge Railways

Enjoy a slow-paced journey through the North of Spain with the Feve trains. Often hidden from railway maps, these trains run through narrow-gauge lines that measure only 1000mm. Established in 1965, they extend from Bilbao, in the Basque country, to Ferrol, in Galicia. Along the way, there are more than 100 stops where passengers can jump on and off.

Many of the stations feature stunning stained-glass windows such as the one in Bilbao and Santander.

With highways and flights connecting most cities these days, it may seem a little crazy to go on this lengthy railway journey, but the landscape views in between the Picos de Europa mountains and the sea, plus the affordable tickets, are worth every second.

Narrow-Gauge Railways Itinerary

Basque Country

Our journey begins at the Bilbao-Concordia station. If you’re planning to explore the city for a couple of days, check out our Bilbao Itinerary , which includes tips on what to see during your visit.

You can also prolong your trip by getting the inter-city rail from the Amara-Donostia station in San Sebastián , which travels along the coast and passes through the small fishing village of Zumaia, before going inland towards Bilbao.

From the Bilbao-Concordia station, hop on the Feve train to Santander. You can spend some time here enjoying the city’s pristine beaches and lively tapas bars. One dish worth trying is the chorizo a la sidra, Spanish chorizo cooked in cider. Make sure to dip the bread in that delicious leftover sauce. You can also order a plate of jamón ibérico, followed by some pintxos (tiny tapas held together with skewers) all paired with a glass of white wine.

If you want to spend a day or two exploring the city, read our Santander itinerary for tips on where to eat and where to stay. Then it’s time to catch the train to Cabezón de la Sal. Enjoy the ride on the tiny train coaches as you pass through pasture land, grazing animals, white stone churches and a knee-deep river. The carriages slowly empty and the stations start to get smaller as you approach Cabezón de la Sal.

 You can book a night at the Jardín de Carrejo , a rustic three-star hotel featuring lush gardens and an abandoned canal.

Before leaving the Cantabria region, you should stop by San Vicente de la Barquera. With the Picos de Europa mountains in the background and the Cantabrian sea ahead, this fishing town is well worth the visit. It’s home to beaches and a charming old town featuring Renaissance palaces and a medieval castle. For lunch or dinner, head to Boga Boga, a local seafood restaurant famous for its lobster and monkfish stew.

From San Vicente, hop back on the train towards the Asturias region. The first stop on this route is Ribadesella, a lovely seaside town and the ideal place to sample some ciders. While you’re here, make sure to visit a sidrería (cider house) and watch the experienced escanciador (cider pourer) fill your glass from high above. This introduces oxygen into the drink and helps give its staple crispness. After your welcome drink, stop by Casa Basilio for lunch. Then, take a walk along the River Sella, a sweeping “S'' watercourse that flows into the sea. From here, you can spot the Picos de Europa mountains rising in the distance. As the sun sets, make your way to the rocky formations of Acantilados de Castro Arenas.

You can spend the night at Bajo los Tilos , a charming bed and breakfast located amid the mountains.

Wake up early and return to the Feve train. This is where the journey gets wilder, as you’ll pass through rough tunnels and green fields scattered with orchards and hórreos (granaries resting on stone pillars). Along the way, you’ll often spot people canoeing in the river or enjoying a glass of cider on the train’s platforms.

Jump off at the small town of Infiesto and order a homemade meal at Pliego Meson El Horru, before ending the night at La Posada de Barro or further on at El Gran Sueño , a small guesthouse overlooking the Picos de Europa.

Next stop is Oviedo, Asturias’ capital. There’s a lot to see in this medieval city, including a cathedral and a lively food market. Order another cider and don’t miss the regional delicacies, such as the Fabada, a bean stew served with spicy Asturian sausage. Pack some cheese for the journey as the train continues under tiny bridges and enters deep green valleys.

Other must-stops in Asturias are Cudillero, a picturesque fishing village facing the ocean, Cadavedo with its scenic beaches, and Navia, famous for its coastal paths.

Spend the night in Navia at the Hacienda Llamabúa and then continue along to Ribadeo, a harbour town that stands in between Asturias and Galicia. It’s famous for its delicious seafood, so make sure to try some while you’re here. You can spend the night at the four-star hotel Parador or a country-style guesthouse like A Cortiña.

Don’t leave without a visit to the Praia As Catedrais, a beach with stunning rock formations.

This slow, peaceful adventure comes to an end as you approach the region of Galicia. You can stop at the charming seaside village of Viveiro and then head to Loiba. Here a scenic 2 km walk awaits, crossing eucalyptus woods until it reaches Praia do Picón. At this dramatic beach, you’ll find “the most beautiful bench in the world”, where you can rest for as long as you want. Enjoy the breathtaking views over the ocean as the sun sets and then get a ride to the Semáforo de Bares hotel where you can spend the night. From here you can hike to Punta de Estaca de Bares—one of Spain’s most spectacular viewpoints.

Back on the train, hop off at Ortigueira and spend the night at the nearby El Castaño Dormilón . The journey ends in Ferrol, where you can visit several museums and a Neoclassical church or get a ride to Mirador Cabo Prior for incredible views over the sea.

This train journey takes about 19 hours at its fastest, from beginning to end. Of course, you don’t have to do it all in one go, and it would be hard to do so with the schedule restrictions and train changes. There are more than 100 stops along the way, including tiny villages with rural guesthouses where you can spend the night. The duration will depend on how many stops you make, but on average it can take you about a week to complete the journey from Bilbao to Ferrol. You can choose to start your journey in any of the stops we’ve mentioned above or follow the route in reverse from Ferrol to Bilbao.

Schedules and Tickets

The narrow-gauge railways go across Spain’s Green Coast connecting Bilbao (Basque country) to Ferrol (Galicia). It’s best to book your train tickets as you go, carefully checking routes and timetables online or directly at the stations. Some destinations are often in the middle of nowhere, so there are few services available. Before leaving, make sure to check if you have to change trains.

If departing from Bilbao, you’ll spend around €50 on trains. Most of the tracks you’ll travel are also used by the luxurious El Transcantábrico train, but the journey is much more affordable. 11 incredible trips around Spain for train lovers

The Transcantábrico

The Transcantábrico Train is the oldest and most quintessential luxury tourist train. This route is a dream: travel around the north of Spain, known as Green Spain for its stunning landscapes overflowing with this colour, on board a train that preserves the romanticism of the great trains of the early 20th century but also has modern facilities. The more glamorous version is the Transcantábrico Gran Lujo which departs from San Sebastian and eight days later arrives in Santiago de Compostela . Travellers can try the gastronomy from Castile and Leon , the Basque Country , Cantabria , Asturias and Galicia , while enjoying gala nights, live music on board and tickets to museums and monuments with a multilingual guide.

People say the Al-Andalus Train is like a palace on wheels. In fact, the carriage-suites are part of the very series constructed to transport the British Royal family between Calais and the Côte d'Azure. Passengers on this train will visit Andalusia over seven days, ending in Seville . The experience of travelling on one of the world's most spacious trains is combined with the chance to try dishes by prestigious chefs and discover cities such as Cadiz, Ronda, Cordoba, Úbeda and Baeza and sights like the Alhambra .

Galicia's tourist trains

Did the previous ideas tempt you to visit Galicia? Then you will be happy to hear that every year in Galicia, they run various themed tourist trains. They usually run between May and October and travel the most beautiful routes, such as the Lighthouses Route, the Mansions and Historic Gardens Route, the Roman Lugo Route, the Ourense Spa and Shopping Route, etc. Galician wine has become very famous and one of the most original ways to try it is on board one of these trains, on routes such as the Rías Baixas Wine Route and the Ribeira Sacra Wine Route. Get ready to see landscapes of valleys and vineyards, monasteries hidden among the mountains and incredible scenery along the Sil and Miño rivers.

La Robla Express

Still in the north of Spain, for three days and nights this train offers a journey through the nature and culture of the area, for the most part following the Camino de Santiago or St James' Way. The Bilbao and Leon itinerary is a journey usually offered from June to October. Inside, you can expect classic decoration and outside you will see the natural landscape of the north of Spain. And fine dining is an important part of this route.

Tren dels Llacs

The landscape on this route is equally stunning. We are going to the province of Lleida (in Catalonia) to travel on the Lakes Train . You have two options: a journey in vintage carriages, which have been lovingly restored, or on board modern, panoramic trains. The route takes you to a multitude of locations and has plenty of activities to take part in. For example, there are stops arranged at one of the oldest liquor factories in Catalonia, a lunch of traditional local dishes, trips to the Gerri de la Sal salt flats, the Castell de Mur, artisan cheesemakers, the Aigüestortes y Estany de Sant Maurici National Park and much more. You can enjoy a trip on this historic train most Saturdays from April to October. The panoramic trains are also available some Saturdays in July and August.

The Cervantes Train

As well as trips over several days there are also interesting day trips. The Cervantes Train departs from Madrid and arrives in the historic city of Alcalá de Henares , the birthplace of the most famous Spanish writer of all time: Miguel de Cervantes. Even the journey itself is interesting as various actors in 17th-century costume accompany the travellers. When you arrive you can visit iconic places in Alcalá such as the Calle Mayor, the University, the Cathedral and, of course, the home of the author of Don Quixote . The train usually runs on Saturdays in the spring and autumn seasons.

Sigüenza Medieval Train

Sigüenza , known as the “City of the Young Kinght”, is just 130 kilometres from Madrid. It is one of the few places that still has three preserved walls and a surprising medieval feel. The train journey, which departs from Madrid, is brought to life by folk singers, knights and princesses through music and theatre, and it also offers a selection of cakes. Upon arrival in Sigüenza, a tour guide will take you to discover the most important points in the city: the Castle, the Cathedral, the Plaza Mayor square and the Casa del Doncel. You will also be able to try typical dishes such as migas, Castilian soup and the delicious Yemas del Doncel sweets. It usually operates between April and November, not necessarily on weekends.

The Strawberry Train

This is a great idea for the weekends in Spring and Autumn . The route? From Madrid to Aranjuez , a location famous for its delicious strawberries and whose Cultural Landscape is listed as World Heritage. Aranjuez is primarily known for the Royal Palace of Aranjuez and its stunning gardens that are great for walking around. During the journey, you will travel in wooden carriages constructed between 1914 and 1930, and will be offered strawberries to try. Once you arrive in Aranjuez, depending on which itinerary you have chosen, you can visit places such as the Palace or the gardens, or climb aboard a boat or sightseeing bus-train.

Philip II Train

Passengers are taken to San Lorenzo de El Escorial , just over 50 kilometres from Madrid, in a 20th-century locomotive . Once the train arrives, and depending on the ticket type, the trip includes a guided tour of the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial . This amazing monument was built by Philip II in the 16th century and was considered the “Eighth Wonder of the World”. It houses the Royal Pantheon, the Basilica, the Library, the Hapsburg Palace, etc. That is why walking around inside is an experience worthy of kings. The tour can also include a panoramic route through La Herrería forest or the Casita del Infante gardens.

Sóller railway

Climbing aboard this period train with wooden carriages is one of the best experiences on the island of Mallorca . The railway itself is really beautiful, but what you can see through its windows is even more so: it leaves the city of Palma , goes through the Sierra de Alfàbia, overcomes a drop of almost 200 metres and crosses 13 tunnels, several bridges and the “Cinc-Ponts” viaduct. Once the train reaches the beautiful village of Sóller , the smell of orange blossom mixes with the sea and having a coffee outside with the mountainous landscape in the background is a truly delightful experience.

Campos de Castilla Train

We recommend travelling to Soria from Madrid and spending the weekend surrounded by poetry and local cuisine. Taking this train means following in the footsteps of the famous poet Antonio Machado, who lived there more than 100 years ago. Before the train arrives in Soria, in Sigüenza, some “special” passengers get on board: actors who liven up the journey with anecdotes about Machado. Once you reach Soria you can visit the Baroque San Saturio Chapel, the splendid San Juan de Duero Monastery , the ancient city of Numantia and the enigmatic, captivating Black Lagoon. You can take this trip some weekends between May and November.

Each has double bed (a few have twin beds; request at booking), long sofa, lots of storage, flat-screen television and computer with complimentary Wi-Fi access.  (Note the Wi-Fi connection works best while the train is stationary.) The cabins are approximately 129 square feet. Air conditioning and heating are individually controlled. These cabins can accommodate three with the sofa converting to a bed.

The focus of this journey is fine dining and learning the culture of Northern Spain through its food and wine. Breakfast is served daily in the train’s two dining cars; most other meals are in fabulous local restaurants along the way. All meals and wine are included.

El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo has two additional lounges where you can sit and relax, enjoying the scenery, chatting, reading, or playing one of the many board games provided. The lounge car has seating for about 18 with couches, armchairs and tables, as well as a unique panel of panoramic windows. There is also a “disco car”, with live music and/or dancing every night. This car has a bar and dance floor, and stays open and lively until the last person retires. Note that drinks served outside of meal times are additional.

Note that journeys on this train often have an international mix of passengers speaking different languages. Sometimes touring and announcements will be in multiple languages.

Dinners can go late in the evening, as is Spanish culture. Many meals feature fresh seafood; if you do not like seafood or have an allergy, please advise at booking.

Since El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo is a narrow-gauge train, the hallways are not wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair.  Contact us if you have limited mobility.

Costa Verde Express: The Unsung Hero of Northern Spain Train Tours

A luxury train gliding past lush green landscapes peppered with charming coastal towns that make up Spain’s Green Coast. The relatively unknown Costa Verde Express offers passengers an unparalleled experience through one of the most enigmatic parts of the country.

When the offer came in to join a trip on the Costa Verde Express, it took me about half a second to respond “When do we leave?”, my brain immediately brimming with pictures of the Grand Tour of bygone eras before I even hit “send” on the email. This six-day slow-train journey sashays across northern Spain ; kicking off in Santiago de Compostella, hugging the rugged coastline of Galicia, Asturias , and Cantabria, before lilting its way to the final stop, Bilbao. With a strong focus on regional products, local guides visiting off-beat locations in Spain, and, lest we forget, a plush sleeper train lined with 23 snug cabins, it does not get more  sustainable than this. Add to that the impeccable service and you have a train ride firmly ensconced in a class of its own.

What to Expect on the Costa Verde Express

Covering a total distance of merely 581 km (361 mi), the journey could theoretically be completed in a few hours. The Costa Verde Express however takes six full days from start to finish with the train barreling through an average of 96 km (60 mi) daily. It is clear that this glamorous, old-world mode of exploration is geared towards the journey, not just the destination. Our sojourn is further enhanced by the strong focus on local gastronomy. Sumptuous breakfast spreads and elegant dinners are enjoyed aboard the train. On the menu are seasonal dishes that spotlight the region through which the train passes, from Galicia to Basque Country. Products are sourced locally, expertly cooked on-board, and elaborately presented on bespoke tableware. While the train is a sleeper train, it is so in name only, one sleeps on the train but it does not barrel through the night. Oftentimes, the train pulls into the station mid-way through dinner, where it stays put until the next morning. For the curious few, myself included, this offers a welcome opportunity to explore the local nightlife. A nightcap is, after all, part and parcel of getting to know a local culture.

GOOD TO KNOW | The traditional meat- and fish-heavy cuisine of northern Spain is less geared towards vegetarians than other parts of the country. Meals aboard were stellar however the lunch options in the Paradores were a bit of a hit-and-miss.

Costa Verde Express Itinerary

As the Costa Verde Express cuts through stunning valleys, slate-gray bluffs, and sparkling surf on the way to Bilbao, it makes several stops along the way. These are a mixture of the region’s starlets – Santiago de Compostela, Oviedo, Gijon – and well-kept travel secrets: Cangas de Onís and Cavadonga Lakes.

Much akin to a cruise ship, stops mean disembarking and taking an organized tour with your fellow travelers. If the thought of walking behind an overzealous guide waving a brightly colored flag, while wearing matching baseball caps sends shivers down your spine, fret not, neither flag nor matching headdresses made an appearance on my trip (thank goodness!).

Our guides were local and their friendly service combined with animated storytelling helped bring the places we visited to life. Personally, I found there was a good balance between guided tours & free time to amble around, or in my case, manage to get lost in even the tiniest of villages.

Below you will find a detailed description of the highlights we visited along the way. More practical information including cost, how to book, etc. can be found further down.

GOOD TO KNOW | Tours are entirely optional, as is disembarking for that matter. The onboard staff will provide you with a schedule for the day, the only fixed appointments are lunch and getting yourself back on the train in time for departure.

DAY ONE – Santiago de Compostela to Viveiro

Day one on the Costa Verde Express kicks off with a bang, in the emblematic Hotel Parador de los Reyes Católicos in Santiago de Compostela. One warm welcome from the staff, obligatory awkward handshakes between fellow passengers, and a bag drop later, we set off the explore the city with a local guide.

Or, they did. I was left scrambling to look for clean clothes, sunscreen and a toothbrush as my luggage had decided to take a detour for the first few days of my trip. Mission accomplished, I plonked myself down in front of the Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela and took in its splendor, awash with pilgrims celebrating the endpoint of the “Camino”.

A few hours later, I waltz back to the Hotel Parador and sit down for my first gourmet lunch. It turns out to be a sumptuous affair of four courses, plus an endless supply of local wines. As we will soon discover, this will be the pattern for both lunch and dinner over the next 6 days. Good thing I invested in stretchy pants.

After lunch, we head to the Costa Verde bus, whisking us away to the train station of Ferrol where our glamourous ride, and its full complement of staff, eagerly await us. There is a collective sharp intake of breath as we first lay eyes on our home for the next 6 days. Stepping inside this storied train, I am immediately catapulted into the turn-of-the-20th-century: Gleaming polished wood, plush velvet chairs, and suffused lighting. Our dropped-off bags have magically reappeared in our cabin, where we have a short window to inspect before reaching our first stop: Viveiro. The combination of gray skies and gray buildings makes Viveiro rather underwhelming, despite our guides’ best efforts. After a short excursion, it’s back on the train for our first meal. We have both our meal and our first night in the station of Viveiro, aboard the train.

TIP | Come a day early and spend a night in the Hotel Parador de los Reyes . This will ensure you have ample time to properly explore the lively city of Santiago de Compostela.

DAY TWO – Viveiro to Oviedo

A hand-rung bell heralds a new day of adventures aboard the Costa Verde Express. We hop on the Costa Verde bus which shepherds us to Cathedral Beach. Personally, this was one of my favorite stops along the route. Wandering around the white sandy beach strewn with gargantuan pillars of sand I feel infinitely small, a lost traveler in a land of giants. A courageous few train compatriots embrace the goosebump-raising Cantabrian Sea waters. It is July yet nowhere near warm enough for that shenanigans in my book.

After our beach adventure, the bus takes us to the colorful port town of Ribadeo. We gleefully scatter to explore the tiny hamlet filled with gently crumbling galleried houses. Little groups have started to form amongst travelers, the close proximity of the train turning us from strangers to the best of friends, overnight.

Lunch is a breezy 3-hour affair, after which we drowsily step back on the train which glides to our next stop of the day: Luarca. The briefest of excursions is organized, before our alluring train rolls into our final resting place for the day, Oviedo. Dinner is had on the train.

GOOD TO KNOW | When I did this trip, we spent the night in the station of Oviedo. It was very noisy, so make sure to bring earplugs.

DAY THREE – Oviedo to Llanes

We are now halfway through our trip and it’s time to discover Gijon, the capital of Asturias. This little city has a decidedly maritime feel, with vociferous seagulls flying overhead and locals braving the decidedly gray weather (not an uncommon affair we are told) to enjoy the famous San Lorenzo Beach, protected by the watchful eye of Iglesia de San Pedro.

Many hearty courses and, a few too many glasses of wine later, we are back on the bus in the direction of Oviedo, where both our train and a city tour await. Oviedo is undeniably beautiful, filled with mementos of Spain’s past, most notably Oviedo Cathedral (wowza!), home to a shroud believed to have been used to wrap Christ’s head after his death (slightly eerie truth be told). Oviedo warrants at least one day of exploring, we just have two hours. Our whirlwind visit coincides with a traditional festival and the city is alive with costumed dancers, bagpipe players, and women sporting flowy skirts moving to the rhythmic chattering of castanets. One for the books! As dusk starts to settle, we retreat to the Costa Verde Express. Over dinner, the wine in our glasses gently sways from left to right as the train winds its way to Llanes, our final stop of the day.

FOODIE TIP | Make sure to head to Confitería Rialto , the birthplace of the region’s most famous biscuits, moscovitas . Thin wafers covered in chocolate.

DAY FOUR – Llanes to Cabezón de Sal

A mountain girl at heart, this is the day I have been most looking forward to. We jump on the bus transporting us up to the Cavadonga Lakes. As the road coils upwards in a serpent-like motion, the urban sprawl of Oviedo gives way to panoramic views on both sides of the bus.

The Lakes are nestled in the heart of the mountainous Picos de Europa National Park, home to brown bears, the Iberian wolf, and the region’s highest peaks. We walk up towards the viewpoint over Lake Enol (1,070 m/ 3,510 ft above sea level) where a plaque reading “best viewpoint of Asturias” ironically points to … a thick wall of gray mist. Well, I guess we tried.

Deciding to try and turn our bad luck, we decided to head down to the Cavadonga Sanctuary in search of divine intervention. Seems we are not alone. Flocks of pilgrims patiently cue outside the confession booths, and vending machines choc-a-bloc full of candles lining the entrance to the (once) Holy Cave.

Lunch is a sumptuous affair just outside of quaint Cangas de Onís, a town renowned for its Roman Bridge after which I decided to spend some time getting to know our palace on wheels as my fellow travel mates end their day of adventures with an excursion to the coastal town of Llanes.

MUST SEE IN LLANES: Paseo San Pedro, Gothic Santa María del Conceyu church, Cubos de la Memoria

PRACTICAL TIP | If you tend to suffer motion sickness, you will want to either sit in the front of the bus or take medicine with you. The road is very, very windy to the viewpoint.

DAY FIVE – Cabezón de Sal to Santander

Day five on the Costa Verde Express is bursting with cultural excursions. We crossed over to the neighboring region of Cantabria, starting at the Altamira Caves, one of the oldest examples of prehistoric cave art in the world. Boy, those bison were heavyset back in the day.

Nearby Santillana del Mar, a patchwork of intimated cobblestoned streets, is our next stop. My free time there is spent peeking inside the various Cidrerias (Cider Houses) and artisanal shops. We had one of the best lunches on the entire trip in Santillana del Mar. That gazpacho was nothing short of divine.

As we collapse into a collective post-lunch slumber in our cabins, the train makes its way to the coastal city of Santander. We have the briefest of bus rides through the city leading us to our last group dinner, ending on a high note in Restaurante Serbal , a one-star Michelin establishment.

FOODIE TIP | Head to Casa Quevedo in Santillana del Mar to try their local specialties: Bizocho, Quesada or Sobao. A glass of milk on the side is encouraged, though of course entirely optional.

DAY SIX – Santander to Bilbao

Instead of the usual wake-up call, we are jolted awake by the train revving up its engines and heading towards Bilbao. Despite the rickety start to the day, this was perhaps my favorite morning of the entire trip.

Watching the urban sprawl of Santander give way to verdant mountainous landscapes, perfectly framed by the windows of my cozy cabin, I cannot help but smile. As I stick my head out of the window to snap a memento, my camera almost collides with an overzealous tree branch. First coffee, then pictures, point taken.

The last region of the trip is the Basque Country, or Euskadi, as it is locally known. We make a beeline for the famous Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, which put the city on the international tourist radar just over 20 years ago, thanks to its modernist architecture and world-class art collections. After lunch on the outskirts of Bilbao, tearful goodbyes and heartfelt hugs are shared as we are dropped off at the main train station. What feels like a lifetime of adventures, was in fact a mere 6-day trip. Exploring 4 regions, countless cultural sites and copious amounts of silky Spanish wine. What an experience!

Onboard Amenities and Services

The Costa Verde Express is equipped with 23 sleeping cabins, each of which has an en-suite bathroom. Inside the 6 square meter (64 square feet) rooms, there is a surprising amount of storage. A small closet hugs the wall behind the door and various cupboards are mounted atop the bed.

BEDS: The beds are snug, especially for two people measuring 119 cm wide by 185 cm long (4ft wide by 6ft long). The last 4 sleeping cabins have slightly wider beds and are more adapted for a couple.

WAKE-UP CALL : Each morning we are awakened by the sound of a school bell, vigorously being swung by a member of the crew diligently walking by the 23 sleeping cabins of the Costa Verde Express.

TURN-DOWN SERVICE: Although the beds seem to make themselves anytime you step outside of your cabin, it is the nightly turn-down service that really stood out for me. As we have dinner, the crew discretely makes the rounds of the cabins closing curtains, turning on the AC (if needed), and leaving a handful of complimentary chocolates.

ADDITIONAL AMENITIES: Safe, minibar with complimentary water, air conditioning, and a telephone with an outdoor line. Wi-Fi reaches the rooms, although it is spotty when the train is moving.

The private bathroom has a hydromassage shower/steam sauna, a hairdryer, a complete toiletry kit, and a bathrobe. Towels are refreshed daily.

GOOD TO KNOW | One carriage has 4 sleeper cabins. I had cabin number 23 at the very end of the train, which in practice meant I had a bit of a walk from the dining cart to the sleeping cabin. The hallways are rather narrow, and can be a bit tricky to navigate when the train is moving.

Onboard Meals and Drinks

Breakfast and dinner are always served on the train (aside from the dinner in Santander). The culinary team works with local suppliers and providers to source ingredients from the diverse environments the train travels through. In practice, this means there is always something new to try!

Meals are served in one of the three stately dining cars. Although no specific dress code is applicable, guests tend to adhere to business casual. The last evening guests are requested to don their finest attire for a goodbye party held in the bar car.

BREAKFAST | Breakfast is usually served between 08.00 am and 09.30 am, although this depends on the daily schedule. Aside from a buffet, various dishes are available à la carte (eggs, breadbasket, …).

DINNER | Many of the dinners are served while the train is moving. As the images of Spain’s Green Coast flash by, we are served regional specialties on bespoke tableware. Always accompanied by a selection of freshly baked breads. The attentive waiters clearly accustomed to the natural lilts and tilts of the train.

DRINKS | Dinner is paired with a great selection of local wines and digestifs, ensuring the experience is to be enjoyed leisurely and at length. All drinks served during the meal are complimentary. Drinks served outside of mealtime are not included.

FOOD ALLERGIES | Make sure to mention any dietary restrictions or food allergies before booking. I am a vegetarian and was served different dishes throughout the journey.

Practical Information For Travelers

DAILY ITINERARIES : After dinner, a member of the crew will provide you with a daily itinerary detailing exactly what activities are planned and what clothes to pack with you for the excursions.

WHERE DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT: You sleep on the train in your private cabin. As previously stated, the train does not ride through the night. It usually stops right after dinner is finished and does not leave again until the next morning. It pulls into various train stations along the way, make sure to bring earplugs as some of these can be pretty noisy.

LANGUAGE SPOKEN ON THE TRAIN: The staff onboard speaks a variety of different languages including French, Spanish, German, Polish, and English. Announcements are made in English and Spanish.

EXCURSIONS: Excursions are voluntary e.g. there is no obligation to join. The only true obligation is to make sure you meet up at the pre-arranged time & location. At the beginning of the trip you are provided with a headset, through which the local guides provide information during the excursions.

PETS: Pets are not allowed aboard the Costa Verde Express.

SUSTAINABILITY: The Costa Verde Express does have a few kinks to work out to live up to her full, sustainable, potential. The use of plastic bottles versus glass bottles, a more versatile offering for vegetarians at lunchtime, and perhaps a different choice of stations to park the train at night are all great places to start.

Price of the Costa Verde Express and Bookings

The Costa Verde Express is a luxury train, which is reflected in the price. There is little point beating about the bush. Prices for a single cabin start at € 8,000 (US$ 8,700) while a double cabin will set you back € 9,000 (US$ 9,800) for two people.

WHAT IS INCLUDED | This price includes full-board (e.g. three meals a day), excursions with a local guide, complimentary toilet kit, and entrance fees to all museums and activities. It also includes free regular Renfe train tickets to the starting point of the trip and back from the end point of the trip.

BOOKING | Tickets can be booked directly on the Costa Verde Express website . Upon booking you will be requested to pay 15% of the full fee, with the remaining 85% to be paid 30 days prior to departure.

Is the Costa Verde Express Worth It?

If you are looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience and have pennies to spare, definitely. There is very little that can beat a slow train journey through northern Spain. After six days exploring this surprisingly unknown part of the country, I can see why people wax lyrical about Galicia, Asturias, and the Basque Country. A beacon of authenticity in the world’s most visited country.

The Most Epic Train Journeys You Can Experience in Spain

With the longest fast train network in Europe, Spain allows for getting about in speedy and economical fashion. However, if you like to travel by train for the scenery, there are some truly epic routes across mountains, seaside and the backcountry. Here’s our pick of the best train journeys you can experience in Spain.

Transcantabrico.

Perhaps the most well-known of the Spanish train routes, the Transcantabrico takes you across northwestern Spain, from the pilgrimage town of Santiago de Compostela to the food capital San Sebastian. What makes the Transcantabrico so remarkable is the possibility of travelling in the Grand Luxe five-star cabins which have their own fine dining restaurant and on-board entertainment in the social carriages. A journey on the Transcantabrico is a holiday in its own right, and expectedly comes with quite a price tag.

Barcelona to Montserrat

Tren dels Llacs

The so-called ‘Train of the Lakes’ is a sightseeing train ride which runs from Lleida in Spain to Saint Girons in France and was first inaugurated in 1929. The train runs along the course of the Noguera Pallaressa and Segre rivers, offering views of the nearby mountains, valley and water reservoirs – hence its name. Highlights include some great birdwatching opportunities, as well as geological and historical sites which can be visited along the way.

Offering a similar experience to the Transcantabrico but with less glamour – and an equally reduced price tag – La Robla is a train experience across northwester Spain, from Léon to Bilbao in the Basque Country. The vintage locomotive stops off at different points of interest along the way where guests can enjoy sightseeing as well as traditional meals in local restaurants. The train is stationary during the night though, so that passengers can be well rested and enjoy breakfast with a view as the journey continues in the morning.

Tren de la Fresa

One of the quirkier train rides in Spain, the Tren de la Fresa runs between Madrid and the town of Aranjuez, famed for its juicy strawberries or fresas in Spanish. The train runs from April to October (except July and August) and follows the route of the second ever Spanish train line, inaugurated over 160 years ago. What really makes the Tren de la Fresa memorable is the fact that passengers are fed strawberries by train workers in 19th century dress before arriving in the UNESCO World Heritage Site town of Aranjuez.

Barcelona to A Coruña

If you’re not put off by the idea of spending 12 hours in a train seat, the journey from Barcelona in the northeast to A Coruña in the northwest takes you across some of the most epic scenery in Spain. Starting on the shores of the Mediterranean, make your way through the Catalan backcountry, through the open pastures of Castile and Léon before arriving in the verdant valleys of Galicia and the Atlantic coast.

Costa Blanca Express

No longer officially named the Costa Blanca Express, this train route runs between Alicante and the infamous beach resort Benidorm. These days the train is part of the Alicante suburban rail network and makes frequent stops along the coastline of the Costa Blanca. If the thought of exploring Benidorm doesn’t sound quite up your street, opt for the neighbouring town of Villajoyosa, which has retained a more authentic spirit.

Bilbao to Santander

If some of Spain’s most famous train routes are to be found in the northwest it’s not surprising: the Basque Country, Asturias, Cantabria and Galicia boast some truly epic landscapes, from rolling hillsides, dramatic mountain landscapes and breathtaking coastline. The short train ride between Bilbao and Santander offers amazing views of the Cantabrian shoreline as it winds its way through small fishing villages.

Madrid to Oviedo

Leave the Spanish capital behind and head north to the Asturian capital, Oviedo , on the shores of the Bay of Biscay. Ronda to Córdoba

Nuria Valley Rack Railway

The Núria Valley Rack Railway may only run for 12.5km (7.7 miles), but the journey also climbs a 1,000m (3,280 feet) elevation through the Pyrenees mountains. The Vall de Núria is picture-perfect, with peaceful mid-mountain lakes, diverse wildlife and many species of wild animal to be admired. The rack railway, inaugurated in 1931, is in fact the only the way to access the valley which makes the journey all the more special.

From scenic trains through Germany's Rhine Valley to sleeper services from Brussels to Prague, here are the best train routes for summer 2024 © Boarding1Now / Getty Images

Are you planning some European travel this summer? Me too. Getting from A to B by train has never felt so exciting, with a thrilling mix of new routes, classic journeys, and under-the-radar options to choose from.

Here are some of the most enticing European train journeys available for summer 2024. Some services kick in when summer timetables begin in June, while many are in operation now. Either way, it’s time to start planning!

1. There's a new service linking the Baltic capitals

Lithuania has been quietly building up international rail connections in recent years. A cross-border service to Warsaw and Kraków in Poland began in late 2022, and since December last 2023, it has been possible to travel between two of the Baltic capitals by direct train. The journey north from Vilnius to the capital of Latvia , Riga , takes 4 hours and 15 minutes and runs daily, making it a competitive alternative to the bus. Booking in advance is recommended, though. This new route through the Baltics is a precursor to a hoped-for extension towards Tallinn which would link the three capitals. Back in Vilnius, connecting with an onward train to Kaunas is possible.

2. Travel at high speed from Barcelona to Seville

Iryo, a recent entrant into Spain’s seemingly ever-expanding range of high-speed services, has established a foothold on the high-traffic Madrid to Zaragoza and Barcelona route. Its new offering extends from Barcelona and Madrid to the Andalucían cities of Córdoba and Seville , making the journey between the Catalan capital and Seville in 5 hours and 50 minutes. Using the same rolling stock as Trenitalia’s slick Frecciarossa trains, Iryo is also notable for an onboard food service that includes cheese and ham tapas and sustainably sourced Spanish wines to help the high-speed scenery flash past.

How to book: Tickets from €40 one way can be bought online through Iryo .

3. Take the night train from Brussels to Prague

Europe’s night train revolution continues to reshape the experience of traveling across the continent. Only last year, there was no option to reach Prague from the west by sleeper. Now, there are options to lull you to sleep from Paris or Brussels to Berlin , then onto Prague by lunchtime. One approach is the thrice weekly Austrian Nightjet service from Paris and Brussels to Berlin, where you change trains for Prague. More conveniently, there is the privately run European Sleeper train on alternate nights, which takes you all the way. Don’t expect too many frills, though: this train consists of older carriages leased from various train companies around Europe. You will, however, travel directly to Prague with a friendly train crew and enjoy a time-efficient, continent-spanning journey. 

How to book: One-way tickets from Brussels to Prague on the European Sleeper start at €79 for seats, €109 for couchette space, €179 sleeper berth.

4. Scoot along İstanbul's Sirkeci seafront line

If ever a station was a shadow of its former self, it’s Sirkeci, sitting on the shores of the Bosphorus in İstanbul ’s Sultanahmet district . Best known as the one-time terminus for the fabled Orient Express trains, Sirkeci lost its long-distance services in 2013. While the city bustles around Sirkeci, the ground-level platforms have sat unused since, while the underground Marmaray railway flashes underneath the old city bearing travelers from Europe to Asia. There’s life in old Sirkeci yet though. The opening of the new 5.2-mile light rail service to Kazlıçeşme restores trains to the original trainshed. In time, these renewed tracks may even see a return of Sofia - and Bucharest -bound services to the banks of the Bosphorus rather than their less convenient departure point at Halkalı, the western end of the Marmaray line. For now, this is an excuse for nostalgically-minded travelers to hop on a train from one of Europe’s most storied stations, perhaps for a seafood meal in lively Kumkapi, one of the stops on the new line.

5. Ride the summer-only route from Budapest to Koper on Slovenia's Adriatic

Some journeys are so perfectly made for hot weather that they only exist during Europe’s hottest months. Pulling out of Budapest ’s Deli station – not to be confused with the more famous Keleti – the Citadella train noses its way every morning to the Slovenian border and onto the compact capital, Ljubljana . While the views on the Hungarian journey are less remarkable, the stretch of track running alongside the Sava River between Celje and Ljubljana introduces Slovenia’s natural beauty. Between June 16 and August 24, taking this train past the capital to Koper on the Slovene riviera is possible. Koper is home to a historic center stuffed with Venetian architecture and, combined with an unusual journey to get here, more than justifies being added to any central European plans this summer.

How to book:  Tickets cost from €22 one way and can be bought on the MÁV website . 

6. Spend a month traveling Germany by train for just €49

One of the continent’s great travel deals can open up a host of slow journeys in Germany. For €49, travelers can purchase a Deutschlandticket for a month. The price includes regional and suburban (but not ICE or IC long-distance) services across Germany, plus buses, trams and subways. As well as covering urban exploration, this ticket is perfect for hopping around the Rhine and Moselle valleys , taking a tour of the Black Forest or exploring many of the Harz Mountain lines. It also opens up possibilities for some regional international services across borders. Even if you end up paying for the occasional inter-city service, you’ll still save money.

How to book: The Deutschlandtickets (€49 per month) are sold through the DB website , but they're not aimed at visitors, so buying one as a non-German resident can be fiddly. See Seat61's how-to  for the latest guidance.
