Our stay at Beit Al Baraka was simply magical. The B&B itself is wonderfully furnished; Muna has obviously thought of any and all comforts her guests could wish for. Our room had a fabulous view and the beds, linens and towels provided were of top quality.

From the roof you have an splendid view and the archaeological site is just some steps away. Visits to local families and small entrepreneurs should be made! It's worthwhile and a beautiful experience!

The host is great at showing you around the village, to see the views on a hike (and explains what your looking at), going on a tour to see the historical sites, meeting the locals and eating some tasty home cooked local food from the talented Um Sulaiman. There is a lot more to see too. The BnB itself was spacious clean and had everything you need. Living room was very comfortable, with more amazing views! Well worth a visit.

We had a great stay with our 18 month old daughter and a couple of friends. The breakfast is amazing, the rooms are comfortable, and Roddy, Muna and the team are very communicative and helpful. They arranged a toddler-friendly hike for us and were always available. We cooked our own dinner and the kitchen is equipped with everything you need. We will definitely be back!

I highly recommend a visit to this little known part of Jordan which combines amazingly preserved Roman ruins with a wonderful nature reserve (wildflowers, beekeeping, foraging etc). Beit Al Baraka was a perfect base for our family and their itinerary and guides were excellent

The House of Blessings was the perfect accommodation for our trip to Um Qais. Muna and Roddy (avid travelers) were incredibly welcoming, friendly and very interesting! You'll go to this place for the nice rooms but you walk out having learned so much about the history and the local people of Um Qais.

We had a wonderful stay at Beit Al Baraka in February. Um Qais is absolutely beautiful this time of year as everything is just starting to green up. Our daughter (almost 18 months old) had a wonderful time discovering the chair that is her size and the toys carefully prepared as well. We asked for a cot and we were not disappointed. Excellent value for the money and we look forward to staying again soon.

We had an excellent stay at Beit Al Baraka! In the morning, local women made us a delicious breakfast, complete with coffee and fresh juice, mezze, yogurt with fresh fruit and local honey, and homemade mana’eesh. We appreciated the personal touches and meeting the locals and thought it was a perfect weekend getaway. We will definitely visit again.

Great stuff and awesome local vibes! Situated in the North of Jordan, Beit Al Baraka was a nature filled and relaxed experience. Um Qais might not be a must-do for a typical tourist visiting Jordan, however a two-day trip there is well worth considering for anyone stepping foot or even residing in Jordan.

Dubai: Al Qana, the highly-anticipated waterfront destination in Abu Dhabi, is currently 90 per cent complete, said the project’s developer Al Barakah International Investment.

“As promised and despite the challenges, the construction of the project is on schedule,” the company said in a statement on Sunday.

The destination, which spans an area of 2.4 km, will include the National Aquarium, the Bridge Wellness and Lifestyle Hub, Cinemacity Al Qana, Pixel (e-sports and gaming hub) and dining and entertainment activities.

“As the tourism sector recovers from the travel restrictions due to the pandemic, Al Qana would be ready to receive visitors in 2021,” said Fouad Mashal, CEO of Al Barakah International Investment.

“Our top priority is to adapt to the new social norms in place to ensure the safety of visitors coming to this special social destination,” Mashal added.

Spread across 2.4km, the waterfront destination is expected to open this year

The massive Al Qana waterfront development coming up in Abu Dhabi, which will feature the largest aquarium in the Middle East, is now 90 per cent complete.

The project was originally slated to open in late 2020.

“Despite the challenges, the construction of the project in on schedule,” developer Al Barakah International Investment said in a statement.

Spread across 2.4km, the waterfront destination will feature seven anchor destinations including The National Aquarium, The Bridge Wellness and Lifestyle Hub, Cinemacity Al Qana – the largest standalone cinema in Abu Dhabi, e-sports and gaming hub Pixel as well as dining and entertainment activities.

The developer also confirmed that 95 per cent of the aquarium is complete, 85 per cent of the construction work on both the Al Qana Cinema and The Bridge Wellness hub has been done, and that 85 per cent of the landscaping is now in place.

The Marina and its 100 berths are now fully installed and food and beverage outlets are set to take handover of their units.

Fouad Mashal, CEO of Al Barakah International Investment, said: “Al Qana is our ultimate touristic project that will provide a very unique experience we all envision for the entertainment and tourism sectors in the UAE. As the tourism sector recovers from the travel restrictions due to the pandemic, Al Qana would be ready to receive visitors in 2021. We are almost there.

“Our top priority is to adapt to the new social norms in place to ensure the safety of visitors coming to this special social destination. Our team is working on new protocols and procedures with the relevant authorities to ensure the required guidelines are applied fully at our premises.”

Stuart Gissing, general manager of Al Qana, added: “We are committed to bring to the market a new way of experiencing entertainment. We are not a mall but a vibrant lifestyle destination of entertainment for all age brackets.”

Al Qana is the first-ever Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model implemented by the Abu Dhabi Municipality (ADM) and is jointly developed by Al Barakah International Investment.

International Construction Contracting Company is the lead contractor in charge of the project’s development.

Construction of Abu Dhabi's latest entertainment and dining hub, Al Qana, is about 90 per cent complete.

The waterfront destination, spanning 2.4 kilometres, will have restaurants and cafes, children's recreation centres, and, most notably, the National Aquarium – the Middle East's largest.

On Sunday, Al Qana developer, Al Barakah International Investment, said the project was on schedule for completion this year.

"As the tourism sector recovers from the travel restrictions due to the pandemic, Al Qana would be ready to receive visitors in 2021," said Fouad Mashal, chief executive of Al Barakah International Investment.

"Our top priority is to adapt to the new social norms in place to ensure the safety of visitors coming to this special social destination. Our team is working on new protocols and procedures with the relevant authorities to ensure the required guidelines are applied fully at our premises."

Located on the Khor Al Maqta waterway, Al Qana is spread across seven zones.

Visitors will have access to restaurants spanning the waterfront, offering a prime view of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

Al Qana's main feature, the aquarium, spans more than 7,000 square metres and is now 95 per cent complete. Once open to the public, it will be home to 33,000 marine creatures that will be cared for by a team of 80 experts and specialists.

The animals will be responsibly and ethically sourced from around the world, according to organisers, with the destination highlighting the importance of conservation throughout its themed zones.

The other sections will feature scenic walkways to encourage visitors to stroll, while entertainment options will include cinemas, a children's area, an outdoor skate park and landscaped community spaces.

Al Qana will also have a yacht marina, an e-sports and gaming zone, a wellness hub and virtual-reality park.

Tourist numbers up in post-war Afghanistan

His soldier son toured Afghanistan with fighters in his crosshairs, but US traveller Oscar Wells has a different objective – sightseeing promoted by the Taliban’s fledgling tourism sector.

Marvelling at the 15th century Blue Mosque in northern Mazar-i-Sharif, 65-year-old Wells is among a small but rising number of travellers visiting Afghanistan since the war’s end.

Decades of conflict made tourism in Afghanistan extremely rare, and while most violence has now abated, visitors are still confronted with extreme poverty, dilapidated cultural sites and scant hospitality infrastructure.

They holiday under the austere control of the Taliban authorities, and without consular support, with most embassies evacuated following the fall of the Western-backed government in 2021.

They must register with officials on arrival in each province, comply with a strict dress code and submit to searches at checkpoints.

ISIL (ISIS) attacks also pose a potential threat in the country.

The number of foreign tourists visiting Afghanistan rose 120 percent year on year in 2023, reaching nearly 5,200, according to official figures.

The Taliban government has yet to be officially recognised by any country, in part because of its heavy restrictions on women, but it has welcomed foreign tourism.

“Afghanistan’s enemies don’t present the country in a good light,” said Information and Culture Minister Khairullah Khairkhwa.

“But if these people come and see what it’s really like,” he added, “they will definitely share a good image of it.”

Wells, on a trip with travel company Untamed Borders, which also offers tours of Syria and Somalia, describes his visit as a way to connect with Afghanistan’s people.

He describes a “sense of guilt for the departure” of United States troops.

“I really felt we had a horrible exit, it created such a vacuum and disaster,” he said. “It’s good to help these people and keep relations.”

For solo traveller Stefanie Meier, a 53-year-old US citizen who spent a month travelling from Kabul to Kandahar via Bamiyan and Herat in the west, it was a “bittersweet experience”.

“I have been able to meet people I never thought I would meet, who told me about their life,” she said, adding that she did not face any issues as a woman on her own.

She did experience “disbelief that people have to live like this”, she added. “The poverty, there are no jobs, women not being able to go to school, no future for them.”

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality . 

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT. 

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT. 

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

The below table by NASA shows when the eclipse will start, peak and end in 13 cities along the eclipse's path.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017. 

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT. 

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET. 

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com . 

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.

AMMAN — Eid Al Fitr has significantly improved the inbound tours in various tourist and archaeological areas across the country, according to stakeholders.

Speaking with The Jordan Times on Wednesday, Mahmoud Waleed, a tourism operator and owner of a travel and tourism agency, said that “the majority of tourists went to Aqaba duringthis Eid … while much smaller numbers of visitors went to Petra and Wadi Rum”. 

Furthermore, Waleed said that the four-day Eid period witnessed a sharp rise in staycation reservations. Noting that “Almost all stakeholders observed heightened activity, especially in the regions of Ajloun, Jerash and Irbid”.

He said that “traditionally, Eid public holidays are a very busy period, however, when compared with previous years, we can see that the demand was a bit higher this year”.

Deputy President of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) and Tourism and Economy Commissioner Hamzah Hajj-Hassan on Saturday said that some 110,000 tourists visited Aqaba during Eid Al Fitr holiday until Friday, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra. 

Hajj-Hassan said that some 95,000 of the total tourists entered the coastal city through Wadi Al Yutom and Wadi Araba crossings, and 15,000 visitors entered Aqaba through international land ports, seaports and the airport.

 According to Salama Khattar, a representative of the Jordan Society of Tourism and Travel Agents, the “Urdun Jannah” programme, which encourages domestic tourism, has played a key role in stimulating inbound tourism during Eid.

He pointed out that the programme has helped bring a diverse range of hospitality experiences to people.

In this regard, Batoul Huthaifa, 24 years old, told The Jordan Times over the phone that “most of the families I know went on a trip or rented a villa near the Dead Sea or Jerash on Thursday or Friday…” adding that she went to Irbid with her family and the favourable weather was helpful.

Meanwhile, Osama Saif Eddin, an employee at a hotel in the Dead Sea, said that occupancy rates have risen by no less than 50 per cent, peaking on Friday and Thursday.
