THE STORY OF MEDJUGORJE

The story of the Medjugorje apparitions dates back to June 24, 1981, when six children encountered the Virgin Mary while playing in the hills near their village, their names were Ivan, Jakov, Marija, Mirjana, Vicka and Ivanka.

According to their accounts, they saw a radiant woman holding a child in her arms, who they identified as the Blessed Virgin and had a message of peace. These apparitions of Our Lady of Medjugorje, also known as Queen of Peace, still take place today.

Central to the Medjugorje apparitions are the messages attributed to the Virgin Mary. These messages, conveyed through the visionaries, emphasize prayer, fasting, reconciliation and faith in God. They call on humanity to turn away from sin, embrace love and forgiveness, and strive for spiritual renewal. Over the years, countless pilgrims have been inspired by these messages, finding solace, guidance, and renewed faith in their lives.

Saint James Church and Apparition Hill are the two main places of worship at Medjugorje. Apparition Hill is often climbed by pilgrims visiting the sanctuary and, along the path, a wooden cross marks the site where the Blessed Virgin made the first call to peace in 1981.

Pilgrimages to Medjugorje have been authorised by the Vatican since 2019.

Medjugorje Pilgrimage 2024 or 2025 tour spends one week in the peaceful mountain hamlet in Bosnia-Herzegovina where the Virgin Mary has been appearing since June 25, 1981. After arriving in Dubrovnik, Split, or Sarajevo, you will be met by a local guide from Medjugorje who will bring you back to his home village recounting the story of Our Lady’s first apparitions along the way. You will attend Mass and pray the Rosary daily with the villagers and other pilgrims from around the world at St. James Church .  During the Medjugorje Pilgrimage, you will have the opportunity to climb Apparition Hill where Our Lady first appeared, and to make the Way of the Cross as you ascend Cross Mountain . Your guide for the Medjugorje Pilgrimage Tour will arrange for you to meet any of the visionaries who are in the village at the time and to hear young men from the Cenacolo community share their stories of conversion and witness to the healing power of Faith. It is said that Our Lady invites all her Children to Medjugorje to lead them to a closer relationship with Her Son, Jesus, and to exhort us to Pray for Peace in our hearts, in our homes, and our communities. “…more than 40 million people from all faiths, including many people with illnesses and problems, have gone on pilgrimage to Medjugorje, a small town in Bosnia-Herzegovina since the first apparitions were said to have taken place there in 1981. Indeed, today more pilgrims go there than to Lourdes, the famous Marian shrine in France, although Fatima continues to draw the same numbers as before the Medjugorje phenomenon.”

Fr. Simon Michalski

I had a wonderful pilgrimage to Medjugorje, a village in Bosnia-Herzegovina in July. Medjugorje is a very holy place. It is unique in the whole world, because most everyone there is very focused on the reality of God, and they all readily accept and propagate the truths of the Catholic Faith. The Blessed Virgin Mary is said to appear there every day to some local visionaries. Catholics are free to go and make a pilgrimage there.

I went and took in my heart all the needs of my Parish. I prayed and interceded those I love at many different holy sites, in and around Medjugorje. I prayed for my loved ones at the two apparition sites. These sites were extremely moving and holy. Wow, one could feel the presence of God there very powerfully.

In the main Church of St. James, and at many times throughout my Medjugorje pilgrimage we encountered God working in and through His People. I also was very moved by the group of people I was with on this pilgrimage. My group was so loving and became like a family.

It was my honor to pray for my loved ones in all these places. I came back from my pilgrimage tour on fire for God and more deeply in love with Him. I strongly recommend to you to go on pilgrimage and receive these manifold graces.

God Bless you, Fr. Simon Felix Michalski, O.P.

Hello, Catholic Journeys:

Renn and I enjoyed the Pilgrimage to Medugorje. The Hotel Sulic owner Beryl, and his staff very kind and personable. The rooms and gathering spaces were charming and inviting. The food was better than expected well prepared with fresh fruit and vegetables wine, soft drinks offered at appropriate meal times. The house keeping staff kept our rooms neat, tidy, re- stocked with fresh towels and linens every day.

Dragan, our guide, was especially helpful with anything we needed during our stay. He provided excellent historical information with a great sense of humor during our tours. He treated each person as if they were the only one on the tour. He gave detailed written information daily. He bent over backwards to help anyone with their scheduled pick up and departures, making several trips to pick up lost luggage and juggled 3 different groups within our group due to delays, and lost luggage. His sons, Marko and Boris were just as knowledgeable and offered extra sites and drives during our pre and post stay. I can’t say enough praise for the team you chose for us.

I would make a Medjugorje Pilgrimage again because of Dragan and that hotel. My son was treated so kindly. He had great historical conversations with Dragan and Marko. Also, this team lives the Catholic Faith. I loved the St. James daily schedule and daily events which Dragan encouraged everyone to follow between scheduled activities. My experience was so much deeper that I came home more in love with Our Lady and Christ Jesus.

Once again, Thank You!

Melissa & Zeb L

This was my first Medjugorje pilgrimage. I brought my 12 year old son, Zeb. It was our first time out of the country.

TRAVEL: I really liked only having 2 plane rides to get there. The bus ride from Croatia was fun and Dragan was a great tour guide.

GROUP: This group was amazing. It’s so funny how I ended up having so many connections with people. MCA, Brother Martin, Lakeview, etc… My only complaint about the group is that I didn’t get to talk to everyone and get to know them all.

HOTEL: Perfect. Juca and his family were so friendly and helpful. The rooms were very basic but very clean. At first, I was like Oh crap no TV. But please tell them to NEVER put TVs in the rooms! It forced us to talk, pray, journal, toss pistachios out the window lol, go to the lobby and talk to other people. It made me realize what a waste TV is even at home. Food was delicious! Wine was delicious! I just wish they left it out in the lobby at night when we were all hanging out. Or give us an option to buy it like they had with the beer, soft drinks, and ice cream.

GUIDE: Terry was wonderful. She was a leader and an expert but also one of us. She walked with us & prayed with us like it was her first time too. The rainbow! Her strength, both physical and internal, is something I strive for. She loved my son, even though he aggravated her a lot lol. I can’t imagine going back to Med. if she is not with me. I hope her arm is better. I wish Dragan was our guide the whole time. The other guy was nice and very knowledgeable, but didn’t have the jokes.

I sent Marcelle a list of things I would pack the next time I go. And yes, I am already thinking about when I can go back. I’d love to go to all the sites Mary has appeared.

Thank you, Catholic Journeys, for a wonderful pilgrimage to Medjugorje. I have told MANY people about my trip & referred them to CJ if they ever decide to go.

Thanks again, Melissa & Zeb

What a great Medjugorje Pilgrimage with a great group! Terry and DePaul were awesome! Very personable knowledgeable and professionally experienced. Thank you.

My pilgrimage to Medjugorje was most wonderful! All of the people, those in the group, the people in Croatia, the hotel group were just so great! I loved all the people!!! It was great to have two Masses a day! The number of people attending the Masses were just phenomenal! I tell people that I would love to move there! I can’t, however, as I have too many responsibilities here and way too much family! But I would love to return there some day, preferably next year for another Medjugorje Pilgrimage! Oh yeah, the people in the shops were so helpful! I loved all of them so very much!!!

When to go to medjugorje: the climate of medjugorje.

in Bosnia and Herzegovina 3 Views

This post is also available in: Italiano

The climate of Medjugorje is very similar to that of the Dalmatian coast. The sea is located, as the crow flies, only 30 km from Medjugorje so its climatic influences are quite strong. The country’s position along the Balkan peninsula also entails a certain influence on the part of the continental climate that characterizes the interior of the peninsula.

This famous and popular pilgrimage center, which is located about 30 km from Mostar, has in fact a Mediterranean-type climate with minor continental influences. In general, there are winters that are not too rigid but very rainy, and very hot and relatively dry summers.

The country is located about 200 meters above sea level and has abundant rains in the months between October and March. Medjugorje has a relatively dry season limited to the summer months, between June and August. In nearby Mostar, the average annual rainfall is over 1,500 mm. November and December are the wettest months. Snow is not very common in Medjugorje, but in the surrounding mountains it frequently snows in winter.

In winter, temperatures rarely drop below freezing, but the often rushing wind makes temperatures seem lower than they are. In nearby Mostar, the average minimum temperatures of the coldest month, January, stop at 1.9 ° C, while the average maximum temperatures reach 8.4 ° C. In summer, the heat can sometimes be stifling with average maximum temperatures above 30 ° C, average minimum temperatures in July and August are above 18 ° C.

WHEN TO GO TO MEDJUGORJE

The best time to go to Medjugorje are the warmer and relatively less rainy months between April and September.

Russia’s Best Locations for the Northern Lights

Home / Russia Travel Tips & Essential Advice / Russia’s Best Locations for the Northern Lights

Only eight countries reach north above the Arctic Circle, but without a doubt, Russia reigns supreme. While this means freezing winters with uninterrupted nights that linger for weeks, it’s also the setting for one of the planet’s most awe-inspiring spectacles – the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights.

Here are 6 of the top unique destinations to view the northern lights in Russia: View map

Table of Contents

1. Murmansk, Kola Peninsula

Murmansk , in the extreme north-west near Finland, enjoys over 40 days of uninterrupted night, making it one of the world’s premier destinations for the Aurora Borealis, and with over 300,000 residents you can enjoy all the cosmopolitan comforts of civilisation amidst the serenity of the Arctic.

Northern Lights Murmansk tour Russia Kola Peninsula icebreaker Lenin

You can get to Murmansk by train (30h) or flight (2h) from Moscow or St Petersburg, what makes this region is easiest to get in order to experience the Northern Lights from late August to May, with the condition that the night temperature is below -10 ° C, so plan your trip for mid-September to mid-April.

The Northern Lights is a poorly predicted phenomenon and depends on the magnetic activity of the Sun. In other words, you have to wait and literally “hunt” it, which means it’s worth a week or more to go. You can diversify your vacation in the Kola Peninsula by skiing in the Khibiny Mountains or dog sledding in Kirovsk.

Check out this snippet of what to see on a tour in Murmansk, hunting the northern lights:

2. Arkhangelsk

There is a general rule for observing the Northern Lights in Arkhangelsk region – the heart of Russian North – the further from the large populated areas, the brighter the “dance of the sky” is. Severodvinsk city is where you’d like to go for the Aurora Borealis hunting from mid-September to mid-April. The radiance of the lights here is distinguished by a green shade and specific flicker. Aurora borealis lasts here from 10 minutes to several days. Well, while waiting for the sky to blossom, you may visit the open-air museum of wooden architecture “Malye Korely”.

The flight from Moscow to Arkhangelsk will take two hours, a journey by train – about 22 h.

3. Naryan-Mar

This forgotten northern outpost lost prominence when easier routes across Siberia opened through the Ural mountains, leaving it a preserved vestige of Nenets culture . Enjoy learning myths, legends, and indigenous lore (like not whistling during the northern lights) in a truly unique journey through Russia’s heartland.

Northern lights green Russia

The Aurora Borealis in the polar Naryan-Mar is very beautiful, it consists of several colours and is accompanied by a flicker, that turns the night sky into a fairy tale. The best time for observation is the season from November to March. This natural phenomenon is observed usually with a sharp change of weather. The flight to Naryan-Mar from Moscow takes slightly less than three hours.

4. Novaya Zemlya

Only reachable by special permit, this northern archipelago is one of the most extreme locations to view the northern lights. Watch the glow of lights bathe herds of reindeer in subtle greens as they stroll on islands stranded in a frozen sea during the polar night. Truly a once in a lifetime experience.

5. Taimyr Peninsula

Taimyr is called “the edge of the cold”, because the duration of winter here is from 235 days in the south, up to 285 days in the north of the peninsula. The climate is extremely stiff: in winter it’s from -40 ° C and to -60 ° C. Taimyr is also known as the land of rare amazing northern lights.

Taimyr northern lights

You can get to the peninsula by plane from Moscow to Norilsk (4h), and then to Dixon, Igarka or Khatanga villages by car. These villages are actually renowned for its bright white light show seen only during summer. But don’t get too excited – the year-round high never gets above +5C (43 F), so don’t forget to pack your coat.

The only “city” in the world located north of Arctic Circle, Salekhard in Yamal region thrives on the northern lights. Known for a specific tint of green local Nenets people call “Nger Harp – the light of the dead,” Salekhard is a city with its own unique connection to the winter light show.   The Nenets are the native people of the Yamal , and one of the largest native communities in Russia also called ‘Samoyeds’ – a nomadic people who used to live by herding reindeer and are close to the Scandinavia’s Sami (or ‘Lapps’).

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia

If you spend a week out in the tundra or taiga at a nomad camp of Nenets, then you are likely to see the Northern Lights. In general, they can be viewed from August until April, but are most common from November to March and best of all in January and February, when nights are long and dark and colder temperatures bring about multi-coloured Northern Lights, rather than the green ones that appear when it’s “warmer”. To get to Salekhard you can by train from Moscow (45h) or by direct flight (2h).

In Russia, the Northern Lights can be seen even in the more southern areas – in, for example, Karelia, Valdai, St Petersburg and Yekaterinburg.
