The Bus to Malakkappara and Valparai

This road is suitable for cars and bikes. If you are planning a ride start early in the moring. Be alert about wild animals.

The route to Malakkappara is as beautiful as a dream. Sandwiched between the breathtaking waterfalls and mountain ranges, the path is surrounded by spectacular bamboo forests, tea plantations and rock structures. We tag along with a bunch of regular travelers to Malakkappara to explore the less travelled rustic path.

We didn’t have to roam about much at Chalakkudy Bus stand searching for ‘Angel Dawn’, the lone bus to Malakkappara and Valparai town. The name on the board was clearly visible even in the darkness before dawning. Barring the minor damage on the front portion, the yellow-clad bus looked fine. As we entered the bus we saw passengers casting inquisitive glances on us. Ignoring the curious gazes we occupied the empty seats.

We were perhaps the only passengers in the bus whose alighting point Jose Ettan did not know. After issuing tickets, he sat on the long seat in the front. To start up a conversation we joined him in the front row.

We were now far away from Chalakkudy town. Passing Dream World water theme park and date palm farm by Plantation Valley, we saw the enormous Chalakkudy River flowing on one side. The sun beams started slowly piercing through the thicket.

The bus was full and the passengers were familiar with each other. In one of the front seats, a lady sat amid several bundles of newspapers. She was Nebeesa, the newspaper woman of Malakkappara. The people of the high range town would eagerly wait for the newspaper she brought from Chalakkudy every day. After managing her first sale in the bus, she started stacking the newspapers into several bundles.

Meanwhile, we passed Thumboormuzhi Dam and Silver Storm theme park. Jibin, the serious-looking helmsman of Angel Dawn, was kind enough to stop and at times slow down the bus to help us capture the ravishing beauty of the place. As soon as we crossed Kannanguzhi Bridge, a thick green cover of dense forest greeted us on both sides of the road. En route we saw members of Forest Protection Council clad in green attires.

As we were engrossed in the stunning canvas of nature’s wonder, Jibin reminded us of those waiting for the bus and we resumed the journey.The mighty Athirappally waterfall was visible in the distant.

On reaching the check post of the Forest Department, Jose Ettan handed over a parcel to the officers stationed there. It was their breakfast bought from Chalakkudy.

We passed a small waterfall en route, which we heard was a treat to the eyes during rainy season.The next waterfall was in Vazhachal. Around five kilometers from Athirappally, we saw a bamboo structure on the roadside, which was the entrance to the famous waterfall. We could see the fragments of the falls gushing down through rocks and little forests. The bus stopped nearVazhachal school. A group of cheerful children came out to collect a container from Jose Ettan. We peeped out to see what it was and understood that the bus supplied milk to be given to students of the school.

As the bus left Pukalappara Power house,Nebeesa was all set with her carefully bundled packets of newspapers with the places of delivery written on them. Nebeesa would get down in the next stop. After that it was ‘ Angel Dawn’ which delivered all the newspapers.

As the journey progressed, an areca nut tree lay across the road, which some opined was the handiwork of some wayward elephants. We were excited at the possibility of such an elephant appearing in front of us anytime.

We were now at Puliyilappara, the only stopover on the way to have some refreshment. After tying the newspaper bundles with a rubber cycle tube and placing atop the engine box, Nebeesa alighted from the bus.

With no trace of a single vehicle in the whole vicinity, ‘Angel Dawn’ chugged along the scenic bamboo forest on both sides of the road. The next destination was the greenery-laden Vachumaram from where a few labourers from the Advivasi community boarded. Like other passengers, they were also usual travellers. Having no vacant seats to sit seemed to bother them little to continue with their chatters.

Along the road we saw elephant dung in many places. Jose Ettan said if we were lucky we would see elephants. We watched both sides carefully for a glimpse of the giant animal but in vain. After crossing the Anakkayam Bridge we saw a KSRTC bus coming opposite to us. It was the first ever bus that we saw on our journey so far. With much difficulty Jibin gave way to the bus because the road was very narrow.

Malakkappara was 25 km away from there. We resumed the journey through bamboo forest again. The Adivasi labourers had already gotten off the bus. We had ahead of us three hairpin bents.

On our way through Ambalappara Dam, we saw a Nilgiri Langur amid the woods. A person with a bagful of fish caught from the dam tried to sell his catch among the passengers. We were told the dam had big fishes, some as big as around 50 kg.

At a turn on the road, we were baffled to see the duplicate of ‘Angel Dawn’ with the same shade and look coming opposite us. Both belonged to the same owner.

We then passed through beautiful coffee plantations. We could see tea estates and a tea factory in the distant. Malakkappara was not very far from there. On one side lay the upper Sholayar Dam. Passing a church and a Murugan temple,the bus finally reached Malakkappara. Angel Dawn would go till Valppara. We planned to see around Malakkappara till the bus came back.

Our first destination was the upper Sholayar dam. Upon reaching there we were told visitors were not allowed inside the dam because the steps to go inside the dam were weak. There was a small garden and a park in front of the dam. The row-houses of estate workers were seen far away. There was a cottage in the hill top where the manager of the estate stayed. In the same direction there was a building painted in yellow, which we came to understand was a school.

A little along the Valppara route we saw eucalyptus, tea and vetiver farms. In the nearby area there was a Ganpati temple. We came to know that the temple was built after several accidents had happened in the area. On one side of the road was the catchment area of Sholayar dam. We couldn’t explore much because it was time for Angel Dawn to return. The bus would reach Malakkappara at about 1.15 pm. Missing the trip would mean no return to Chalakkudy that day.Time was 12.40 pm when we stepped into a hotel to have lunch.There was a newspaper lying on the table which had the place name written on it. The thought that it was the same newspaper Nebeesa entrusted Angel Dawn to deliver in the morning brought a smile on our face.

Angel Dawn had already reached Malakkappara.We knew most of the passengers from the morning trip. The only additions in the return journey perhaps were two school-going children and three sacks of wheat, rice and fish.The return journey thus began. The Adivasi labourers waited at the same place where they alighted. Remembering our enthusiasm in the morning to have a glimpse of elephants, they asked us whether we could spot any and we replied in the negative. As Angel Dawn moved ahead crisscrossing through the path blanketed in green, they continued their chat; this time the stories were on elephants.

KSRTC bus to take tourists to Malakkappara from Chalakudy

Chalakudy: KSRTC has launched a special service from Chalakudy to Malakkapara to allow the travel freaks to enjoy a ride through the forest path. The sights of evergreen rain forests and the tea plantations in Malakkapara will delight the passengers along with the crisp climate. They will also get a glimpse of the herd of elephants, bison, leopard and many birds including Great pied hornbills. The ticket charge from Chalakudy to Malakkapara is Rs 102.

The KSRTC special buses will take the passengers to tourist spots such as Athirappilly- Vazhachal waterfalls, Peringalkuthu, Sholayar dam, reservoirs and borders of Tamil Nadu.

KSRTC decided to begin a special service when the number of travellers to Malakkapara increased recently. The special KSRTC service that starts at 8.20 am from Chalakudy will reach the destination at 1 pm. The bus will also halt at several viewpoints in between the trip.

The bus will halt at Malakkapara for two hours and depart at 3 pm. The bus will reach Chalakudy at 6 pm. Online pre-booking service will start soon, informed KSRTC.

The first Malakkapara special service was operated on Saturday. If the travellers demand, KSRTC is also planning to operate this service on holidays too. The special service will be available on October 2 too.

കെ.എസ്. ആർ.ടി.സി. ബസ് സ്റ്റാൻഡിനടുത്ത് ഓട്ടോയിറങ്ങുമ്പോൾ സമയം ഉച്ചയ്ക്ക് രണ്ടുമണി. തലയ്ക്കുമുകളിൽനിന്ന് പല്ലിളിച്ച് സൂര്യൻ നല്ലോണം നോക്കിവെച്ചോ, ഇനി രണ്ടീസം ഇത്ര തെളിച്ചമൊന്നുമുണ്ടാകില്ല' എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു. നാല് സർവീസുകളാണ് പതിവുദിവസങ്ങളിൽ ചാല ക്കുടിയിൽനിന്ന് മലക്കപ്പാറയിലേക്കുള്ളത്. രാവിലെ 7.40, ഉച്ചയ്ക്ക് 12.20, വൈകീട്ട് 3.00, 4.40. മലയിലേക്കുള്ള കയറ്റം ഒരു ഡേ-നൈറ്റ് യാത്രയാക്കാം എന്ന തീരുമാനത്തിൽ മൂന്നുമണിയുടെ സർവീസാതിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തത്. ബസ് ട്രാക്കിലേക്കെത്താൻ ഇനിയും സമയമുണ്ട്. ഒഴിവുസ മയം ഉപകാരപ്രദമാക്കിയത് ചാലക്കുടിയിലെ കെ.എസ്. ആർ.ടി.സി. ഇൻസ്പെക്ടറായ ഡൊമിനിക് പെരേരയാണ്. മലക്കപ്പാറ ട്രിപ്പിന് സോഷ്യൽ മീഡിയയിൽ കട്ട സപ്പോർട്ട് നൽകുന്ന ആനവണ്ടിപ്രേമികളായ സുധീപും ദീപകും റെജിനും രാഗേഷുമെല്ലാം അദ്ദേഹത്തിനൊപ്പമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. മലക്കപ്പാറ സർവീസിന്റെ കൗതുകങ്ങളും ചരിത്രവുമെല്ലാം ചുരുങ്ങിയ സമയം കൊണ്ട് അവർ വാക്കുകളിൽ വരച്ചിട്ടു. “തൃശ്ശൂർ ജില്ലയിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന മലക്കപ്പാറ, കേരള-തമിഴ്നാട് അതിർത്തി പ്രദേശമാണ്. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഭരണ കാലത്ത് മലക്കപ്പാറ ടാറ്റ ടീ പ്ലാന്റേഷനിൽ നിന്നുള്ള തേയില കൊച്ചിയിലേക്കെത്തിക്കുന്നതിനുവേണ്ടിയാണ് ചാലക്കുടിയിലേക്ക് വനത്തിലൂടെ റോഡ് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയത്. 1957-ൽ വിമുക്തഭടന്മാർക്കായി സർക്കാർ നാലര ഏക്കർ കാട് പതിച്ചുനൽകിയതോടെ അതിരപ്പിള്ളിവരെയുള്ള പ്രദേശത്ത് ജനവാസം തുടങ്ങി.

" പോം... പോം..."ദേ സഹ്യനെത്തിയല്ലോ", ഡൊമിനിക് പെരേര കൈ ചൂണ്ടിയതും ചിന്നം വിളിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് വെള്ളക്കൊമ്പൻ സഹ്യപുത്രന്റെ മാസ് എൻട്രി. ഇടംകണ്ണിൽ തുടിക്കുന്ന പുള്ളിപ്പുലിയുടെ മുഖം. ചാടിക്കയറി മുൻസീറ്റുതന്നെ ഉറപ്പിച്ചു. ബസിൽ അധികം ആളുകളില്ല, ഡ്രൈവർ മുരളിധരൻ ക്ലച്ച് ചവിട്ടി താക്കോൽ തിരിച്ചതും സഹ്യനൊന്ന് മുരണ്ടു. കണ്ടക്ടർ മൻസൂർ ഡബിൾ ബെല്ല് മുഴക്കിയതോടെ എഴുന്നള്ളത്ത് തുടങ്ങി. ചാലക്കുടി പ്രൈവറ്റ് ബസ് സ്റ്റാൻഡിലേക്കെത്തിയതും സെക്കൻഡുകൾക്കുള്ളിൽ മുഴുവൻ സീറ്റുകളും നിറഞ്ഞു. സമയം 3.20, സഹ്യൻ മലക്കപ്പാറ പ്രയാണം ആരംഭിച്ചു.

പാട്ട് കേട്ട് കാട്ടിലേക്ക് ടൗൺ കടന്നതും ആനവണ്ടിയിലെ പാട്ടുപെട്ടി സംഗീതം പൊഴിച്ചുതുടങ്ങി. ഇനിയുള്ള 90 കിലോമീറ്റർ കാടും പുൽമേടും എണ്ണപ്പനത്തോട്ടങ്ങളും വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടങ്ങളും തേയിലത്തോട്ടങ്ങളുമെല്ലാം നിറയുന്ന പാതയോരങ്ങളാണ്. ഒരു ഇൻസ്റ്റന്റ് വീഡിയോ എടുത്ത് ക്യാപ്ഷനും ഇട്ട് വാട്സാപ്പ് സ്റ്റാറ്റസിൽ നിറയ്ക്കാൻ അധികം ആലോചിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നില്ല ' ഹൃദയം നിറയ്ക്കുന്ന സംഗീതവും ആനവണ്ടിയുടെ വിൻഡോ സീറ്റും വൈകുന്നേരത്തെ പാതിരാക്കാറ്റും, അത് പോരെ മച്ചാനെ... ലൗ ഇമോജികൾകൊണ്ട് ഇൻബോക്സ് തുളുമ്പി.

നഗരക്കാഴ്ചകൾ പിന്നിട്ടാൽ ആദ്യ ടൂറിസം കേന്ദ്രം തുമ്പൂർമൂഴി ശലഭോദ്യാനമാണ്. നിറഞ്ഞൊഴുകുന്ന ചാലക്കുടിപ്പുഴയും കുറുകെയുള്ള തൂക്കുപാലവും ഉദ്യാനവുമടക്കം കാഴ്ചകൾ നിരവധിയുണ്ട് തുമ്പൂർമൂഴിയിൽ. എന്നാൽ പുറംകാഴ്ചകളിലേക്ക് ഒന്ന് കണ്ണോടിക്കാൻ മാത്രമേ സഹ്യൻ സമയം അനുവദിച്ചുള്ളൂ. കാടിന്റെ തുടക്കം പനങ്കാടുകളാണോ എന്ന് തോന്നിക്കുന്നവിധം എണ്ണപ്പനത്തോട്ടങ്ങളാണ് പിന്നീട് വശങ്ങളിൽ നിറഞ്ഞത്. ഈ പച്ചക്കുടകൾ കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ പിന്നെ വനമേഖലയുടെ കവാടമായി, അതിരപ്പിള്ളി.

അതിരപ്പിള്ളി വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടം വ്യൂ പോയിന്റിൽ എത്തിയപ്പോൾ ആനവണ്ടി ഒന്ന് ഒതുക്കി. കുതിച്ചുചാടുന്ന അതിരപ്പിള്ളിയെ ക്യാമറയിൽ പകർത്തി. ബസ്സിൽ നിന്ന് ഇറങ്ങാൻ മടിച്ച ചിലർ കാഴ്ചകളിലേക്ക് തലനീട്ടി വെച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ആരെയും കൊതിപ്പിക്കുന്ന താളത്തിൽ ഉസൈൻ ബോൾട്ടിനെ തോൽപിക്കും വേഗത്തിൽ ഓടിവന്ന് താഴേക്ക് ചാടി പൊട്ടിച്ചിരിക്കുകയാണ് അതിരപ്പിള്ളി. “പോം പോം.. സഹ്യന്റെ മുരൾച്ച അലർച്ച ആകുംമുമ്പേ തിരികെക്കയറി. വ്യൂപോയിന്റിൽ നിന്ന് വിളിപ്പുറത്താണ് അതിരപ്പിള്ളി വെള്ളച്ചാട്ട പ്രവേശന കവാടം. വലിയൊരു ശതമാനം യാത്രക്കാരും അവിടെ ഇറങ്ങിയതോടെ സീറ്റുകൾ കാലിയായി. ഇതുവരെ കണ്ട തെല്ലാം ടീസർ, ഇനിയാണ് യഥാർഥ കാഴ്ചകളെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് മുരളിച്ചേട്ടൻ സഹ്യന്റെ ക്ലച്ചമർത്തി ടോപ് ഗിയറിലേക്ക് മാറ്റി.

ചന്തമുളള ചാർപ്പ

ചാർപ്പ വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടം, മലക്കപ്പാറ യാത്രയിലെ ഏറ്റവും സുന്ദര കാഴ്ചകളിലൊന്ന്, വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടത്തിന് കുറകെയുള്ള പാലത്തിൽ എത്തിയാൽ ആനവണ്ടി ഒന്ന് ബ്രേക്കിടും. ചാർപ്പയുടെ ചാറ്റലിൽ മെല്ലെ ഒന്ന് നീരാടിയാണ് പിന്നീടുള്ള കൊമ്പന്റെ യാത്ര. തൊട്ടരികിൽ വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടവും അതിന്റെ ഹൃദയഭാഗത്ത് വിരിഞ്ഞുനിൽക്കുന്ന മലക്കപ്പാറ കൊമ്പനും, ഹൃദയത്തിലേക്കുതന്നെ ആ സീൻ ഫ്രെയിം ചെയ്തുവെച്ചു. “കാട് കൊറേ താണ്ടാനുണ്ട്, ചാർപ്പ ഇവിടെത്തന്നെയുണ്ട്. ബാക്കി വരുമ്പോൾ കാണാം മെല്ലെ ആക്സിലറേറ്ററിലേക്ക് കാലുവെച്ച് ഡ്രൈവർ മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് നൽകി. വാഴച്ചാൽ ചെക്ക്പോസ്റ്റ് ലക്ഷ്യംവെച്ച് സഹ്യൻ കുതിച്ചുപാഞ്ഞു. വാഴച്ചാൽ വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടത്തിന്റെ കവാടത്തിനരികിൽ തന്നെയാണ് ചെക്ക് പോസ്റ്റ്. കേരളത്തിലെ അവശേഷിക്കുന്ന ഏക പുഴയോരക്കാടാണ് ചാലക്കുടിപ്പുഴയ്ക്ക് ചുറ്റുമുള്ള ഈ ഹരിതകേദാരം. വാഴച്ചാലിലേക്കുള്ള കൊമ്പന്റെ എൻട്രി കണ്ടതും ചെക്ക് പോസ്റ്റ് താനേ ഉയർന്നു. ഒന്ന് ബ്രേക്കിട്ട് സലാം പറഞ്ഞ് ആനവണ്ടി മുന്നോട്ട്.

കാടിന്റെ ഹൃദയത്തിൽ

കാടിന്റെ ഹൃദയം തുടങ്ങുന്നത് വാഴച്ചാൽ മുതലാണ്. ഇടതൂർന്ന് വളരുന്ന മരങ്ങളും ഇടയ്ക്ക് മൃഗങ്ങൾ വിശ്രമിക്കാനെത്തുന്ന പുൽമേടുകളും. ചുറ്റും നിറയുന്നത് കിളികൾ പാടുന്ന പാട്ടും കാടിന്റെ നിശ്ശബ്ദതയും തഴുകി തലോടി പോകുന്ന ഇളംകാറ്റും. എല്ലാത്തിനും നടുവിലൂടെ രാജാവിനെപ്പോലെ മലക്കപ്പാറ കൊമ്പന്റെ പ്രയാണം. വലതുഭാഗം കൂട്ടുപോരുന്ന ചാലക്കുടിപ്പുഴ ഇരുമ്പുപാലം പിന്നിട്ടാൽ ഇടതുപക്ഷമാവും. ഇരുമ്പു പാലമെത്തിയപ്പോൾ ഫോട്ടോഗ്രാഫർ ഇറങ്ങി എതിർവശത്തേക്കോടി. ക്യാമറ കണ്ടപ്പോൾ ബിഗ് ബിയിലെ ബിലാലിനെപ്പോലെ സ്ലോ മോഷനിൽ പാലത്തിലൂടെ സഹ്യൻ വിരിഞ്ഞിറങ്ങി. സൂക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്നോ എപ്പോ വേണമെങ്കിലും യഥാർഥ കൊമ്പൻ കാണാൻ വരുമെന്ന് മുരളിച്ചേട്ടൻ മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് നൽകി. പറമ്പിക്കുളം വനമേഖലയിൽ നിന്ന് പൂയംകുട്ടി വനത്തിലേക്കുള്ള ആനകളുടെ പ്രധാന സഞ്ചാരമേഖലയാണ് വാഴച്ചാൽ പ്രദേശം.

പുളിയിലപ്പാറ

മലക്കപ്പാറ യാത്രയിൽ വാഴച്ചാൽ കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ആകെയുള്ള ഇടത്താവളം പുളിയിലപ്പാറയാണ്. പെരിങ്ങൽകുത്ത് ഡാമിന്റെ പ്രവേശനകവാടമാണ് പുളിയിലപ്പാറ. അഞ്ചുമിനിറ്റ് ഇടവേളയിൽ സഞ്ചാരികൾക്ക് ഒരു ടീ ബ്രേക്ക് എടുക്കാം. പുളിയിലപ്പാറയിലെ വിരലിലെണ്ണാവുന്ന ചെറുകടകളി ലൊന്നിൽനിന്ന് ചായയും ഉള്ളിവടയും അകത്താക്കി. പെരിങ്ങൽകുത്ത് ഡാമിലെ കെ.എസ്.ഇ.ബി. ജീവനക്കാർ പലരും അവിടെയിറങ്ങി. ചായ വർത്തമാനത്തിനിടയിലാണ് സഹയാത്രികനും ഷോളയാർ ഡാം ജീവനക്കാരനുമായ ദിൽകുമാറിനെ പരിചയപ്പെട്ടത്. ഷോളയാർ ഡാമിന്റെയും ചുള്ളിക്കൊമ്പന്റെയുമെല്ലാം വിശേഷങ്ങൾ പറഞ്ഞ ദിൽകുമാർ ഒരുദിവസം ഷോളയാറിലേക്ക് സ്വാഗതം ചെയ്തു. 'ണിം, ണിം... സെക്കൻഡ് ഹാഫ് ആരംഭിക്കാനുള്ള ബെൽ മുഴങ്ങി.

പിന്നീടുള്ള വഴിയിൽ ഭൂരിഭാഗം ഇടങ്ങളിലും ആനപ്പിണ്ടം കാണാമായിരുന്നു. ആദിവാസിമേഖലയിൽ നിന്ന് ജോലിക്കും സാധനങ്ങൾ വിൽക്കാനുമായി പോയവർ ആനക്കയത്തിലും പൊകല പാറയിലും വാച്ചുമരത്തുമൊക്കെയായി കാട്ടുവഴികളിൽ ഇറങ്ങി. അല്പദൂരം പിന്നിട്ടപ്പോൾ പ്രധാന പാതയിൽ നിന്ന് ബസ് ഷോളയാർ പവർ ഹൗസ് റോഡിലേക്ക് തിരിഞ്ഞു. പവർഹൗസിനടുത്തുള്ള ആദിവാസി കോളനിയിലേക്കാണ്. അവിടെ ആളുകളെയിറക്കിയ ശേഷം വന്നവഴി യു ടേണെടുത്ത് പ്രധാനപാതയിലേക്ക് കയറി. ഷോളയാർ ഡാമിന്റെ സൃഷ്ടി പ്രദേശമാണ് വലതുഭാഗത്ത് ഡാമിലേക്ക് വെള്ളം കൊണ്ടു പോകുന്ന പെൻസ്റ്റോക്കിനടുത്തെത്തിയപ്പോൾ മെല്ലെ ആനവണ്ടി ഒന്ന് ബ്രേക്കിട്ടു. ആസ്വാദനത്തിന് ഒരുമിനിറ്റിന്റെ ഇടവേള. മെല്ലെ കാട് സന്ധ്യയെ വരവേറ്റു. വഴിയിൽ ഇരുട്ടും കോടമഞ്ഞും മൂടിയപ്പോൾ ആനവണ്ടി നെറ്റിയിലെ മഞ്ഞ വെളിച്ചം തെളിയിച്ചു. അധികം താമസിച്ചില്ല, ചാറ്റൽമഴ പുറത്ത് താളംപിടിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി, വിൻഡോ ഷട്ടറുകളെല്ലാം താഴ്ന്നു. ഒരു വാഹനത്തിന് പോകാൻ മാത്രം സ്ഥലമുള്ള റോഡായതിനാൽ പലയിടങ്ങളിലും എതിരേ വന്ന ചരക്കുലോറികൾക്ക് സൈഡ് കൊടുക്കുക എന്നത് ഭഗീരഥപ്രയത്നമായിരുന്നു. മുളങ്കാടുകളും വള്ളിപ്പടർപ്പും മരച്ചില്ലകളും വകഞ്ഞു മാറ്റി ഇരുട്ടിനെ കീറിമുറിച്ച് ആശങ്കകളില്ലാതെ സഹ്യൻ മുന്നോട്ട് കുതിച്ചു. റോപ്പാമട്ടം കഴിഞ്ഞതോടെ മലക്കപ്പാറ ചെക്പോസ്റ്റ് മുന്നിൽ തെളിഞ്ഞു. കാട്ടുപാത അവസാനിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു, മലമടക്കുകളിലെ തേയിലത്തോട്ടങ്ങളിലൂടെ മലക്കപ്പാറയുടെ വഴികൾ നീണ്ടു. തമിഴ്നാട് അതിർത്തി ചെക്ക്പോസ്റ്റിനരികിലാണ് ബസിന്റെ അവസാന സ്റ്റോപ്പ്. അതിനടുത്ത ഹോംസ്റ്റേകളി ലൊന്നിലായിരുന്നു ഞങ്ങൾ താമസം ഏർപ്പാടാക്കിയത്. കോടമഞ്ഞിന്റെയും മഴയുടെയും തണുപ്പ് പുതപ്പുപോലെ മൂടുന്നതിനാൽ മുറിയിലെത്തിയതും ഉറങ്ങിയതും മിന്നൽ വേഗത്തിലായിരുന്നു.

മഞ്ഞണിഞ്ഞ മലക്കപ്പാറ

കോടമഞ്ഞ് പൂത്തുനിൽക്കുന്ന പ്രഭാതത്തിലേക്കാണ് ഉണർന്നെഴുന്നേറ്റത്. ടാറ്റയുടെ തേയിലത്തോട്ടങ്ങൾ നിറഞ്ഞ മലമടക്കുകളിലൂ പ്രഭാത സവാരിക്കിറങ്ങി. തേയില നുള്ളാൻ പോകുന്ന സ്ത്രീതൊഴിലാളികളോട് കുശലം പറഞ്ഞും കടുപ്പത്തിലൊരു ചായ കുടിച്ചും നടത്തം ചൂടുപിടിപ്പിച്ചു. കോതമംഗലത്തുനിന്നും കൊച്ചിയിൽ നിന്നെല്ലാം എത്തി മലക്കപ്പാറയിൽ താമസമാക്കി കച്ചവടം ചെയ്യുന്നവരാണ് മിക്കവരും. ടാറ്റയുടെ ടീ ഫാക്ടറി, സി.എസ്.ഐ. പള്ളി, ദേവീക്ഷേത്രം തുടങ്ങി പ്രഭാതനടത്തത്തിനിടയിൽ മലക്കപ്പാറയിലെ പ്രധാന കാഴ്ചകളെല്ലാം വെളിപ്പെട്ടുവന്നു. മല്ലികച്ചേച്ചിയുടെ കടയിൽ നിന്നായിരുന്നു പ്രഭാത ഭക്ഷണം, നല്ല നാടൻ ദോശയും ചമ്മന്തിയും. അതിനരികിലാണ് തമിഴ്നാട് ചെക്ക്പോസ്റ്റ്. അവിടെനിന്ന് അപ്പർ ഷോളയാർ ഡാം, വാൽപ്പാറ തുടങ്ങി അധികം ദൂരേയല്ലാതെ തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലെ കാഴ്ചകൾ മാടിവിളിക്കും. ചാലക്കുടി, പൊള്ളാച്ചി എന്നിവയാണ് മലക്കപ്പാറയിൽനിന്ന് ഏറ്റവും അടുത്ത രണ്ട് നഗരങ്ങൾ.

ക്ലോക്കിൽ സമയസൂചി 12 മണിയോടടുക്കുമ്പോഴും മലക്കപ്പാറയെ കോടമഞ്ഞ് പൊതിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ദിവസം നീളേ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിൽ നിറഞ്ഞുനിൽക്കുന്ന തണുപ്പു തന്നെയാണ് ഇവിടത്തെ പ്രധാന ആകർഷണം. സമയം 12.20. മടക്കയാത്രയ്ക്കായി ആനവണ്ടിയിലേക്ക് തിരികെ കയറി. ബസിൽ മുക്കാൽ ഭാഗം ആളുകളുണ്ട്. മലക്കപ്പാറയുടെ മലമടക്കുകളോടും മനുഷ്യരോടും യാത്രപറഞ്ഞ് കാട്ടുവഴിയിലേക്ക് വണ്ടിയിറങ്ങി. രാത്രി പെയ്ത മഴ വഴിയെ കൂടുതൽ ദുർഘടമാക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നു. വഴിയിൽ പലയിടങ്ങളിൽ മണ്ണിടിഞ്ഞും മരം വീണും കിടക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. മലക്കപ്പാറയിലേക്കുള്ള യാത്രയിൽ ശാന്തയായിരുന്ന ചാർപ്പ വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടം ആർത്തലച്ച് താഴോട്ട് കുതിക്കുകയാണ്. വാഴച്ചാൽ പിന്നിടുമ്പോൾ ചാലക്കുടിപ്പുഴ മഴവെള്ളപ്പാച്ചിലിൽ ഉഗ്രരൂപം കാട്ടിത്തന്നു. പെരുമഴ കാടിന്റെയും പുഴയുടെയും ഭാവം മാറ്റിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ആ ദുർഘടങ്ങൾക്കിടയിലൂടെ ചാഞ്ഞും ചരിഞ്ഞും ആനവണ്ടി ചാലക്കുടിയുടെ മടിത്തട്ടിലേക്ക് താണിറങ്ങുമ്പോൾ വിൻഡോ സീറ്റിൽ ചാറ്റൽമഴ യിലേക്ക് കൈനീട്ടി ഞാനും ചരിഞ്ഞുകിടന്നു.

KSRTC launches Kottayam-Malakkappara budget tourism trip

Are you ready for a bus ride through the forests from Kottayam to Malakkappara? If yes, then the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has the right tour package, which was rolled out as a New Year gift, for you.

The KSRTC will be running the services on January 15, 16, 22, 23, 29 and 30, and the bus will start from Kottayam bus station at 6am and return at 11pm. The tickets for the exciting bus ride can be reserved between 10am and 2pm.

The exhilarating bus tour through the wilderness will give an opportunity to the tourists to see wild animals in their natural habitat. The bus will also touch tourist centers such as Athirappilly, Charpa, Vazhachal, Peringalkuthu dam and Sholayar dam. The travellers will also get the chance to soak in the beauty of the verdant forests of Malakkappara.

The bus ticket rate is Rs 600 per person exclusive of entry fees, food and other travel expenses. The residents’ associations and kudumbashree units can book tickets in bulk for the excursion.

The Thrissur-Malakkappara budget trip, which was launched earlier by the KSRTC, was well received by the tourists. Plans are on the anvil to launch a Kottayam-Parunthumpara bus tour package in the near future, say KSRTC officials.

Tour packs earn big for KSRTC, fetch Rs 5.5 crore in seven months

ALAPPUZHA: Within seven months of its launch, the budget tour packages of Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) have become a big hit. The cash-strapped corporation has operated more than 1,400 trips and got an income of more than `5.5 crore in the period.The corporation is planning to introduce such tourism services across the state and has appointed coordinators in all districts.

N K Jacob Sam Lopez, chief traffic manager of KSRTC Budget Tourism Cell (BTC), said the corporation has gained a reasonable revenue from the services and people are being attracted to the services. “Now, domestic tourists are approaching the corporation. We are planning to attract tourists from other states and abroad as well. The availability of buses is a problem to conduct more services. So, we are planning to take private buses on lease for the services,” he said.

“Now the corporation is conducting services connecting various hill stations and tourism spots in the state. Most of the them are one-day tours costing approximately `1,000 per person, including food,” said Prasanth V, state coordinator of BTC.

The corporation is organising tours in association with the tourism and forest and wildlife departments to Munnar, Malakkappara, Nelliampathy, Munroethuruthu and Munnar-Wagamon, besides trips for Wayanad Jungle Safari, Kochi Sagararani, Kothamangalam Jungle Safari and in and around Alappuzha.

Alappuzha district coordinator Shafeeq Ibrahim said 91 trips have been arranged from various depots in the district so far. “As many as 28 trips have been arranged from Haripad depot — the highest — followed by Mavelikkara, Alappuzha, Kayamkulam, Cherthala and Chengannur depots. Major destinations from Alappuzha are Malakkappara (Thrissur), Arippa (Kollam), Munnar, Munroethuruthu (Kollam), Bhoothathankettu (Ernakulam), Inchathotty (Ernakulam), Wonderla amusement park (Kochi), and Sagar Rani in Kochi including the travel in sea on Nefertiti, a cruiseliner of Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation. We are also planning to start pilgrimage tourism connecting various centres of the district. In addition, packages connecting places like Thrikunnappuzha lighthouse and beach, Pallana Kumaran Asan Memorial, Krishnapuram Palace and R Shankar Memorial Cartoon Museum at Krishnapuram are also being planned. Hence, we plan to conduct monsoon trips for them as they have comparatively more free time during the season,” Shafeeq said.
