Drinking Age In International Waters (All Cruise Line Drinking Ages)

Depending on your age, or those you are traveling with, you might be looking to book a cruise on which you can legally drink alcohol.

While all US cruise ships adhere to the rule that you must be over 21 years old to drink alcohol on a cruise, there are some differences in the drinking age on cruise ships when you sail in international waters.

Below we have covered all the drinking ages for all the main cruise lines in international waters, including exceptions.

Drinking Age in International Waters

For further clarification of the rules, I’ve covered them beneath the table and links to the cruise line policy so you can double-check the details yourself.

How Old Do You Have to be to Drink on a Cruise In International Waters?

When purchasing and drinking alcohol on a cruise ship, you must adhere to the age laws.

International Waters are defined as 3 miles out of US territorial waters .    This means that if the cruise ship is within 3 miles of territorial waters, all passengers must adhere to the drinking age of 21.

Once outside US waters and into international waters, some cruise lines allow a lower drinking age of 18 years.

This is sometimes with exceptions, which we have highlighted.  We’ve also provided links to cruise line alcohol policies so you can double-check any finer terms beneath the tables.

If you are traveling with or of the age of 18, you can get more specific information here about which cruise lines allow 18-year-olds to drink .

What Defines a US Cruise?

While it can vary slightly depending on the cruise line, a cruise is usually classed as a US cruise if it departs from a US port or if it visits at least one US port as part of its itinerary.

Drinking Age on International Cruises

For those on international cruises outside of the US, the drinking ages are typically lower than 21.

Although they can still vary depending on certain circumstances, for example, parental consent is required on some cruise lines.

Can You Drink Under 21 On a Cruise

If you leave or visit a US port as the port of your itinerary and are with US territorial waters, you will not be allowed to drink under the age of 21.

If you sail outside US territorial waters into international waters, some cruise lines (not many) lower the drinking age to 18, often subject to extra conditions such as parental consent.  As well as there being possible exceptions to the rule.

Bahamas Legal Drinking Age

Susan Laurent

Sipping a cocktail in The Bahamas is the epitome of a vacation dream come true. But before you start packing, it’s good to know the do’s and don’ts.

Here’s the lowdown:

  • The legal drinking age in The Bahamas is 18 years old .
  • If you’re on a US-based cruise line, the legal drinking age is 21 .
  • Enjoy your drink in a plastic cup or discreetly wrap it in a paper bag when you’re drinking in public.
  • Drink moderately, as public disorderly intoxication could lead to fines .
  • The legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit for driving is 0.08%.
  • You can’t purchase alcohol on Sundays.

We’ve got more details in the sections ahead, along with some handy safety tips. Let’s get started.

The Bahamas Legal Drinking Age

Drinking in Bahamas

In The Bahamas, the legal drinking age is 18 years old . That means you need to be at least 18 years of age to buy and consume any alcoholic beverage, from beer and wine to cocktails.

US Citizens and the Drinking Age in The Bahamas

The legal drinking age in the United States is 21, however, because T he Bahamas aren’t part of the United States , US drinking age laws don’t apply there. That means that US citizens can legally purchase and drink alcoholic beverages in The Bahamas at the age of 18 .

However, US laws apply the minute you land back home. This means that bringing alcohol purchased in The Bahamas back home if you’re under the age of 21 is illegal .

Drinking Age on US Cruise Ships to The Bahamas

Cruise ships departing from the United States typically abide by the laws of the country where they are registered, which is the United States.

This means that the legal drinking age on US-based cruise lines is 21 . If you’re under 21, you won’t be able to drink on the ship. The Bahamian legal drinking age will apply to you the moment you step foot on a Bahamian island.

Bahamian Rules for Public Drinking

In The Bahamas, drinking alcoholic beverages in public places is permitted , but there are a few rules to keep in mind.

  • You must be of legal drinking age.
  • Your drink needs to be in a plastic cup or wrapped in a paper bag to maintain discretion.
  • Drink responsibly and avoid any disorderly behavior.

Public Drunkenness in The Bahamas

While drinking in public places is legal in The Bahamas, the keyword is moderation. Under Bahamian law, if someone is caught drunk in public, they could face penalties.

The penalty may include paying a fine, deportation, or jail time. The severity of the penalty is determined by the individual’s level of drunkenness, with disorderly and violent behavior resulting in more serious consequences. So, enjoy your drinks in The Bahamas, but do so responsibly to avoid any unwanted legal complications.

Drive Safe, Stay Sober: Drunk Driving Laws in The Bahamas

Drunk driving in The Bahamas is a serious offense, and the authorities don’t take it lightly. The legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit for drivers is 0.08% — the same as other popular vacation hubs like Hawaii   and Mexico .

The penalties for drunk driving in The Bahamas are fines, license suspension, and even imprisonment. Drunk driving isn’t only illegal but also incredibly dangerous, as you risk the safety of yourself and others on the road. So if you’re planning on consuming alcohol when you go out, it’s best to take a taxi or share a ride back to your accommodation.

Where and When Can You Buy Alcohol in The Bahamas?

Liquor Store in Bahamas

Alcoholic beverages in The Bahamas are available at markets and liquor stores between 7am and 9pm, Monday through Saturday. On Sundays, stores don’t sell alcohol .

On the flip side, hotels, clubs, casinos, and restaurants have the privilege of serving alcohol every day during their business hours, including Sundays. If you’re looking for a drink on a Sunday, you can visit one of these establishments.

Essential Tips for Responsible Drinking in The Bahamas

  • Hydrate with plenty of water
  • Don’t leave your drink unattended, as it only takes a moment for someone to tamper with it
  • Avoid confrontation under the influence of alcohol
  • Keep an eye on your belongings, like your purse, wallet, or phone to minimize the risk of lost or stolen valuables.
  • Planning your safe return is very important. Uber isn’t available in The Bahamas, but the Bahama Cruise Taxi Cab can conveniently get you back from the bar to your hotel
  • Mixing different drinks can make you get drunk faster, upset your stomach, and leave you with a nasty hangover the next day
  • Group night outs are the safest — they reduce the chance that you’ll get lost or end up in a risky situation.
  • Moderation is the key to staying in control of your surroundings and ensuring you have a clear, level-headed judgment of the situation

Bahamian Drinks to Try

Yellow Bird

Lastly, we want to share what local beverages you can try in this tropical paradise.

These are some of our favorites, with the key alcohol being rum — the Bahamas’ trademark beverage.

Yellow Bird — A Bahamian cocktail known for its vibrant yellow hue and tropical flavor profile. It typically combines various fruit juices and rum, so it has a refreshing and slightly sweet taste.

Sky Juice — The name captures the light and airy flavor profile of the drink. This cocktail is made by blending coconut water, condensed milk, and gin, creating a smooth and subtly sweet flavor.

Goombay Smash — Goombay Smash is a classic Bahamian cocktail that combines rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, and a hint of coconut. It’s like a burst of fruity paradise in a glass!

Bahama Mama — Mama is a mixture of rum, coconut cream, pineapple juice, and various fruit juices like orange and grenadine. It boasts a deep red or purplish hue and delivers a sweet, fruity, and slightly tangy experience.

Bushwacker — This cocktail has a rich, chocolatey color and a flavor profile that combines creamy coconut, coffee liqueur, and chocolate syrup with the kick of rum. It’s like a tropical milkshake but for grown-ups.

Rum Punch — Adored for its simplicity and refreshing taste. The flavor is a blend of rum, citrus juices (like orange and pineapple), grenadine for a touch of sweetness, and sometimes a hint of nutmeg. The result is a zesty and slightly sweet concoction.

Cheers to Responsible Drinking and Safe Travels

When it comes to Bahamian drinks, rum is the star of the show! But before you get too carried away with the excitement, remember that the legal drinking age is 18.

If you’re of age to drink, that’s fantastic. Just remember a few simple guidelines to stay out of hot water: use a plastic cup or wrap your drink in public and stick to the legal blood alcohol limit of 0.08% while driving.

And don’t forget, on Sundays, you won’t find alcohol for sale in stores, but you can still have a drink at hotels, clubs, casinos, and restaurants. Cheers, and have a great vacation!

Drinking Age in Bahamas: What You Need to Know Before Partying

  • / By Richard Andrews

The Bahamas is the ultimate holiday destination for all kinds of travelers.

If you are someone who loves relaxing and swimming in sublime blue beaches, Harbor Island and Paradise Island are the perfect getaways for you.

Similarly, if you want to enjoy life at its peak, the entertainment complexes and resorts at Nassau are your callings.

Like anything else, vacationing in the Bahamas is all fun and games until you get into some legal trouble.

As a responsible traveler, you should learn to respect any country you visit, including drinking laws.

Yes, like any other country in the world, there is a legal drinking age in Bahamas you should know before you set out for a wild night out.

You see, tourism hub countries, like the Bahamas, are pretty strict when it comes to their laws and legal procedures for travelers.

So, if you ignore their rules or just aren’t aware of them, your well-planned vacation might quickly turn into an unforgettable nightmare.

Why Do We Have Legal Drinking Ages?

When you are in the mood to party during your vacation, you can’t help but think why drinking ages are imposed in the first place.

Believe it or not, legal drinking ages are mandated to keep the citizenry’s well-being in mind.

Like any other country, the minimum legal drinking age in the Bahamas attributes to the decline in vehicle crashes and accidents.

It also promotes the responsible use of alcohol and reduces impulsive drinking, lowering crime and suicide rates.

For these reasons, every citizen and visitor needs to adhere to the law and maintain peace and harmony.

Do All Countries Have a Minimum Drinking Age?

If you are planning to visit the Bahamas , but the minimum drinking age is a turn off for you, you may wonder if every country works the same way.

You will be surprised to hear that the most common drinking age worldwide is actually “zero.”

Yes, about 96 countries around the world have no legal drinking age limit. These include countries like Africa and Angola.

Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean these countries have no restrictions when it comes to drinking alcohol.

Rather, most of these countries have a minimum age for purchasing alcohol or drinking it in public.

This means that, in most places globally, young adults can have alcohol as soon as they like, but it should be under adult supervision.

Also, apart from age, some countries have restrictions regarding the volume of alcohol consumed or purchased at each age, and the types of alcohol being consumed.

For example, it is legal in Belgium to purchase beers and wines at the age of 16, but you cannot buy spirits until you are 18 years old.

The second most common legal drinking ages around the world are 18 and 21. Yet, the WHO states that globally, children start drinking alcohol anywhere from 12 to 15 years on an average.

Besides that, some countries prohibit the purchase and consumption of alcohol altogether, regardless of the age factor, due to religious reasons.

These include countries like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Sudan, and Somalia.

Now that you know about minimum legal drinking ages in other countries and why they exist, let’s get to the meat of the matter.

What age should you be in order to enjoy a drink in the Bahamas legally?

Legal Drinking Age in Bahamas

As mentioned, laws regarding drinking and purchasing alcohol can be quite confusing in most countries.

However, in the Bahamas, the drinking age is relatively straightforward.

If you are 18 or older, we have some good news for you; you can safely purchase and consume alcohol while vacationing in the Bahamas.

Remember, the legal drinking age you need to follow does not depend on your home country, but the country you’re currently in.

This means that if you are from the US or Canada, where the drinking ages are 21 and 19, you can safely consume and purchase alcohol while vacationing in the Bahamas.

All you have to do is provide legitimate ID proof stating your correct age, and you’re good to go.

Still, you should keep in mind that alcohol isn’t sold every day in the Bahamas, unlike other countries. You won’t find any shops selling liquor on Sundays in the country.

That’s why you should remember to stock up on your weekend stash on Fridays or Saturdays, in case you’re staying in the Bahamas for more than a week.

Why Should You Strictly Follow the Legal Drinking Age?

The Bahamas is a popular vacation site visited by families, couples, and individuals from across the globe.

Visiting this place means having to enjoy the best that life has to offer.

Although the minimum legal age for drinking and purchasing alcohol is 18, there are many ways to move around the law and get access to some alcohol.

Unless you go to five-star resorts and legit entertainment arenas, you’ll find that there’s next to no checking for IDs.

Besides that, minors can easily access alcohol by taking help from an adult.

Mind you; you’ll be surprised how many parents consent to their children drinking during vacation time.

Nevertheless, here’s why you should strictly follow the legal drinking age when you’re traveling to the Bahamas, regardless of the situation.

Even though there are loopholes, the law is clear and states harsh punishment for those who break them.

Although it’s uncommon for minors to get convicted for underage drinking in the Bahamas, you can never be too careful.

You wouldn’t want to spoil the whole vacation just for one night of drinking.

As a legal penalty for underage drinking, you can be fined hundreds of dollars. Besides that, you can even get locked up if you show unreasonable behavior after illegal drinking.

That’s why the safest choice is to stay away from drinking alcohol if you’re under 18 when visiting the Bahamas.

Is the Legal Drinking Age Same for All Cities in the Bahamas?

Yes, whether you’re staying in the Bahamas’ capital Nassau, or any other city, the legal drinking age remains the same.

You cannot drink or purchase alcohol legally if you’re under 18 years.

Legal Ages for Other Substances in the Bahamas

Apart from the legal drinking age, there’s a legal age threshold for consuming various other narcotics in the Bahamas.

When it comes to smoking, it’s legal for all ages. Anyone can smoke cigarettes legally without any security concerns.

However, not everybody can purchase tobacco legally in the country. If you want to buy cigarettes, you’ll have to be at least 18 years old.

This means that if you’re younger than 18, you can only enjoy a cigarette if an adult buys it for you.

Similarly, marijuana is strictly illegal for consumption and purchase anywhere in the Bahamas. No one can sell, buy, or smoke pot while vacationing in the country, regardless of their age.

Tourists found in possession or using the drug can face severe legal penalties, according to government law.

Minimum Legal Ages for Other Activities in the Bahamas

Now that you know everything about the legal drinking age in the Bahamas, it’s time you got some extra information.

You’d be surprised to know that there are age limits for other activities, as well.

For example, you have to be at least 17 years old to drive a car in the Bahamas. However, you should be formally trained for driving and have a valid license.

Even if you’re old enough to drive, you have to be at least 21 to rent a car in Nassau. Before you set out to rent a car in the Bahamas, check your rental company’s policy.

Similarly, scuba diving and a few other water sports activities only accommodate children at least 10 years old.

Besides that, all children between 10 and 16 should always be accompanied by an adult. They won’t be allowed to dive, so keep this in mind.

Even if you’re 18, you should present a signed document from your parent or guardian to qualify for scuba diving.

Apart from that, there are many other activities, such as snorkeling, fish excursions, and swimming with sharks, that are not suitable for children.

You should check out the legal age policies for each of these if you’re planning a family vacation so that your children don’t feel left out.

Final Words

So, did you figure out everything you need to know about the legal drinking age in Bahamas?

Most people plan their vacations in a light-headed, carefree mood, but this often makes them forget the important aspects to consider when entering a foreign country.

That’s precisely the case with the legal drinking age.

You might hear lots of people saying that the age doesn’t matter, or you won’t face any restrictions once you get there. Still, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

You should be extra careful regarding the age limits for drinking and other activities if you’re traveling with children under 18.

Apart from being illegal, they might prove to be fatal for their health and well-being, as well.

All in all, just keep all the information we provided in mind, and get ready for your vacation with responsibility!

Now that you know about the legal drinking age in the Bahamas, let’s dive into the specifics of the drinking age in Nassau, Bahamas, where you’ll likely be spending a significant amount of time during your cruise.

Drinking Age in Nassau, Bahamas

While exploring Nassau, you’ll be surprised to discover that locals refer to the legal drinking age as the ‘key to the hidden treasure chest.’

In the Bahamas, the legal drinking age is 18 years old. This means that individuals who are 18 or older can legally purchase and consume alcohol in Nassau. However, it’s important to note that establishments may have their own policies and restrictions regarding alcohol service, so it’s always a good idea to check before ordering.

The Bahamian government takes alcohol restrictions seriously and underage drinking is not tolerated. It’s crucial to respect the local laws and regulations when it comes to consuming alcohol in Nassau.

Now, let’s move on to the next section about the drinking age on private islands.

Drinking Age on Private Islands

On private islands in Nassau, individuals who are 18 or older can legally enjoy a refreshing beverage. The drinking age on private yachts and alcohol consumption on private islands follows the same regulations as the rest of the Bahamas. This means that passengers who are 18 years old or older can indulge in alcoholic beverages while on these exclusive islands.

Whether it’s sipping a tropical cocktail by the pool or enjoying a cold beer on the beach, adults can unwind and relax with their favorite drinks. However, it’s important to note that individuals must still adhere to responsible drinking practices and be mindful of their consumption.

Now, let’s move on to the next section and explore the drinking age on cruise ships.

Drinking Age on Cruise Ships

The drinking age on cruise ships is typically 21 years old, although some cruise lines may allow 18 year olds to consume alcohol with parental consent.

This age limit is enforced in order to comply with international regulations and to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers.

Policies for adults and minors regarding alcohol consumption vary among cruise lines, but most have strict rules in place to prevent underage drinking and promote responsible alcohol consumption.

Age Limits for Consuming Alcohol on the Ship

When you’re cruising in the Bahamas, did you know that the minimum age to legally drink alcohol on the ship is 21 years old? It’s important to be aware of the age limits for consuming alcohol on the ship to avoid any legal consequences. The cruise ship has strict policies in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers, especially minors.

Here are two sub-lists to give you a better understanding:

Policies for Adults:

  • Adults who are 21 years or older are allowed to consume alcoholic beverages on the ship.
  • They must present a valid government-issued ID to prove their age.

Policies for Minors:

  • Minors under the age of 21 are strictly prohibited from consuming alcohol.
  • The ship’s crew actively enforces this policy to prevent underage drinking.

It’s important to follow these regulations to avoid any legal consequences. In the next section, we will discuss the policies for adults and minors in more detail.

Policies for Adults and Minors

The cruise ship has specific policies in place for both adults and minors regarding alcohol consumption. It’s important for parents to be aware of these guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

For adults, the cruise ship allows them to consume alcohol as long as they are at least 21 years old. However, for minors who are 18 years or older, they are permitted to consume alcohol only with parental guidance and in designated areas. This policy ensures that young adults can learn about responsible alcohol consumption under the supervision of their parents.

The cruise ship also provides alcohol education programs for both adults and minors, aiming to promote a safe and responsible drinking culture on board. Understanding these policies and participating in alcohol education programs can help create a positive and enjoyable experience for everyone on the cruise.

Transitioning into the next section, let’s now discuss the legal consequences for underage drinking.

Legal Consequences for Underage Drinking

When it comes to underage drinking, there are serious legal consequences that can result from violating drinking age laws. These penalties can include fines, community service, and even the suspension or revocation of a driver’s license.

It is important to note that the enforcement of age restrictions is taken very seriously, with establishments and individuals who serve alcohol to minors facing their own set of legal repercussions.

Penalties for Violating Drinking Age Laws

Although the penalties for breaking drinking age laws in the Bahamas aren’t as strict as a lion’s roar, they still carry significant consequences. It’s important for both underage individuals and those who provide alcohol to minors to understand the potential penalties they may face. Here are three key consequences for violating the drinking age laws in the Bahamas:

Fines: Individuals caught drinking underage can be fined up to $500. This serves as a financial deterrent to discourage underage drinking.

Community Service: In addition to fines, offenders may also be required to complete community service hours. This helps to educate and rehabilitate individuals involved in underage drinking.

Alcohol Confiscation: Any alcohol found in possession of underage individuals can be confiscated. This ensures that they aren’t able to continue consuming alcohol illegally.

Understanding these penalties underscores the importance of adhering to the drinking age laws in the Bahamas.

Moving forward, it’s important to examine the enforcement of age restrictions to gain a comprehensive understanding of the drinking regulations in the country.

Enforcement of Age Restrictions

Enforcing age restrictions on drinking can be a challenging task, especially in a popular tourist destination like the Bahamas. With thousands of visitors flocking to the Bahamas each year, ensuring compliance with drinking age laws becomes a priority.

While efforts are made to enforce the law, enforcement challenges persist. Moving forward, it is crucial to explore strategies that promote responsible drinking on cruises without hindering the enjoyment of legal-age passengers.

Flannels or FlipFlops Travel Blog contains affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. See my disclaimer for more information.

For many people, the vision of blue Bahamian waters , powdery white sand, and a pretty tropical drink is the ultimate idea of the perfect vacation.

However, if you’re not of legal drinking age in the Bahamas, that dream can quickly turn into a nightmare.

While this may be lower than what you’re used to at home, it’s still important to know and respect the laws of the country you’re visiting.

If you’re caught drinking underage, you could be fined, arrested, or even deported back to your home country.

What is the legal drinking age in the Bahamas

What is the drinking age in the Bahamas and why was it set at that age?

The drinking age in the Bahamas is 18 years old. That’s right, if you want to enjoy a tropical cocktail by the pool, you only have to be 18 years old.

The legal drinking age is actually lower than in most other countries; in the United States, for example, the drinking age is 21 years old.

So why was the drinking age set at 18 in the Bahamas? There are a few possible explanations. First of all, 18 is the age at which Bahamian citizens are allowed to vote and serve in the military.

This indicates that the government trusts 18-year-olds to make important decisions about their country.

Additionally, many cultures around the world have a tradition of honoring young adults with ceremonies or rituals when they reach the age of 18. In some cases, these ceremonies involve alcohol. Therefore, it makes sense that 18 years old would be seen as an appropriate age for drinking in the Bahamas.

Finally, it’s worth noting that tourism is a major industry in the Bahamas. And what do tourists usually want to do when they’re on vacation?

They want to relax and have fun, which often includes enjoying a few drinks by the pool. Therefore, it’s not surprising that the drinking age in the Bahamas is set at 18.

Are there any exceptions to the law in the Bahamas?

The legal drinking age in the Bahamas is 18 years old. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule. For example, religious ceremonies such as wine communion are exempt from the law.

Drinking in the Bahamas

Can you be arrested for drinking alcohol in the Bahamas if you are underage, and what are the penalties if you are convicted of breaking this law?

If you’re under the legal drinking age in the Bahamas, you can be arrested for possession or consumption of alcohol. The penalties for breaking this law are a fine of up to $500 and up to two years in prison.

However, it’s important to note that these penalties are rarely enforced, and most people who are caught drinking under the age of 21 simply receive a warning from the police.

What ID do I need to drink in the Bahamas?

You should have a valid passport with you at all times when you’re visiting the Bahamas .

However, if you want to consume alcohol or purchase alcohol you will also need to bring a driver’s license or another form of photo ID that shows your date of birth.

Can I drink in public in the Bahamas?

Yes, you can drink alcoholic beverages in public in the Bahamas .

It’s also important to note that although you can drink in public, you should always drink responsibly. That means not getting too drunk or causing any trouble.

Can I drink on a Cruise Line Private Island in the Bahamas?

No, the cruise lines have a legal drinking age of 21 for all cruises that originate from the US. This includes private islands such as CocoCay and Half Moon Cay .

How does the drinking age compare to other countries around the world?

The drinking age in the United States is 21, which is higher than the legal drinking age in most other developed countries.

Other Countries with age 21 requirements for drinking alcohol include Indonesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Mongolia, Nauru, Oman, and Pakistan, and Samoa.

A few countries have their drinking age set at 20, including Japan and Finland.

So why do some countries have such a high drinking age?

One reason may be that alcohol consumption is linked to a number of health risks, including liver disease and certain types of cancer. Additionally, alcohol can impair judgment and reaction times.

Other Countries with a drinking age of 18

Along with the Bahamas, many countries have their legal drinking age set to 18 years old. They are: Albania Andorra Australia Austria Chile Colombia Costa Rica Cyprus Equatorial Guinea Estonia Finland Greece Guatemala Ireland  Israel Kazakhstan Latvia Madagascar Mexico Mozambique Netherlands North Korea Papua New Guinea Poland Romania Slovakia Uganda  Vanuatu Vietnam Zambia

Some of these countries have conditions that change the law, such as drinking at home or drinking with a meal, so always check with the specific country you are visiting before you start drinking.

Which countries have the youngest drinking age?

Actually, most countries in the world do not have a set drinking age. This aligns with the cultural norms of their regions.

Even though there are no legal drinking ages in these countries, most of them have an age 18 requirement for purchasing alcohol.

A few of the many countries with no age limit on drinking are Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland.

A few countries have a drinking age of 16 years old, which is the legal age for drinking in Austria, Morrocco, and Russia.

Countries Where Alcohol is illegal

Did you know there are some countries where drinking isn’t allowed at all? Most of these countries are largely Muslim. A few of these countries allow alcohol for tourists or non-Muslims.

The Most Popular Alcoholic Beverages in the Bahamas

The Bahamas are known for their fruity, tropical drinks. While on vacation, be sure and try a few of these perfectly Bahamian creations.

The Painkiller is a delicious blend of Rum, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut, and orange juice; Sprinkle with nutmeg

For something a little stronger, the Goombay Smash is a great drink to try; Pineapple juice, orange juice, Malibu (coconut) rum, light rum, gold rum, garnish with pineapple wedges, and orange slices.

Rum Punch is a stable in the Bahamas. This fruity combo is one of my favorite alcoholic beverages when I’m on vacation. A mix of orange juice, pineapple juice, and lime juice coupled with rum and grenadine, it’s just as pretty as it tastes.

Try a Bahama Mama blended into slushy form for a pretty and refreshing concoction. Orange juice, pineapple juice, regular rum, coconut-flavored rum, and grenadine combined with crushed ice complete this sweet treat.

And no trip to the Bahamas would be complete without trying a classic Daiquiri. Made with white rum, lime juice, and sugar, this refreshing drink is perfect for beating the heat.

No matter which of these taste bud-tempting drinks you choose, be sure and drink lots of water to stay hydrated. With these sugary drinks and the hot Bahamian sun, you can get dehydrated and sick easily.

The Exceptions to This Rule

The laws regarding underage drinking in the Bahamas are quite strict, and the government works hard to ensure that they’re being enforced; however, in some special circumstances, minors may be able to get away with a drink before they reach 18 years of age.

The Exceptions to This Rule

Sometimes, minors may be allowed to consume alcohol under adult supervision at special events. This can include certain religious ceremonies where drinking is an integral part of the gathering. In addition to this, minors may be allowed to have a drink in some cultural traditions. They must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times, though.

Now that we know what the exceptions are, it’s important to remember that these are valid for particular circumstances. As a tourist, you’re very unlikely to find yourself in these situations, so you probably won’t be able to drink before turning 18 in the Bahamas.

What ID Do You Need to Enjoy a Drink in The Bahamas?

What ID Do You Need to Enjoy a Drink in The Bahamas?

Here are some forms of ID that can help you:

  • Passport: Your trusty passport is one of the go-to options. It’s like your global ID card, complete with your name, birth date, and a photo to confirm it’s really you.
  • Driver’s License: If you’re cruising around The Bahamas with your driver’s license, that works too. It’s got your name, date of birth, and a picture – all the essentials.
  • Government-Issued ID : Sometimes, a good old government-issued ID card is all you need. Like your passport and driver’s license, it should show your name, birthdate, and a photo of you.

Some bars, nightclubs, and restaurants might have their own ID preferences. So, for a smooth sipping experience, it’s smart to carry your passport or a government-issued ID whenever you’re enjoying a drink in The Bahamas.

Why The Legal Drinking Age Exists in The First Place?

Drinking age limits have been created with the safety and well-being of visitors and citizens in mind. The age limit was first designed to promote responsible alcohol use and to reduce the harmful repercussions of excessive drinking. We all know how harmful it can be to consume alcohol at a young age.

Why The Legal Drinking Age Exists in The First Place?

By establishing a minimum age at which people can legally acquire and consume alcohol, the Bahamas government intends to limit the quantity of alcohol drunk by those still developing physically and mentally. This can buy their body some more time before their organs are exposed to the harmful effects of long-term liquor use .

Finally, raising the legal drinking age helps to prevent alcohol-related accidents , such as drunk driving, and alcohol-related crimes, such as irresponsible behavior, assault, and vandalism.

Through these steps, the government tries to lessen the harm that alcohol can do to both individuals and society as a whole by establishing a minimum drinking age.

The Consequences of Underage Drinking

There are several important reasons why individuals should follow the legal drinking age, not just in The Bahamas but everywhere. These laws are designed to keep everyone safe. In fact, failure to comply with such saws can often result in severe repercussions and devastating consequences. Let’s take a look at the risks involved:

Legal Trouble

Underage drinking violates the law in many countries, including The Bahamas. Whenever young individuals engage in underage drinking , they expose themselves to legal trouble. Law enforcement agencies take underage drinking seriously, and if you get caught, you may face criminal charges. The last thing you want when visiting a country is legal troubles, so be mindful of the rules!

Underage Driving

Fines & Imprisonment

Since underage drinking is a serious violation of the law in the Bahamas, getting caught can also sometimes mean that you might face heavy fines and imprisonment. The fines for underage drinking can go up to $500 , which can put a severe dent in your finances.

Businesses that serve or sell alcohol to minors can face significant penalties. This is particularly true for the sale of alcohol to minors, which is strictly prohibited and can result in severe penalties. These may include fines, suspension or revocation of their liquor license, and even imprisonment in severe cases.

Fines & Imprisonment

Law enforcement agencies often conduct random checks to ensure that establishments are following the law, and those who are caught violating it may face criminal charges.

Therefore, it is important for both establishments and individuals to take this law seriously and abide by it to avoid facing severe consequences.

Deportation

The Bahamas is a famous tourist destination and is a very welcoming place – as long as you follow their laws. However, if you engage in underage drinking, which may lead to other serious issues such as irresponsible behavior and danger to others, then you might end up in serious trouble with the authorities. And if a foreigner gets caught while drinking underage, it might even lead to them getting deported, which is a terrible way to cut your vacation short!

Deportation: Legal Drinking Age in the Bahamas

Health Problems

Underage drinking poses some very serious risks to your health. Not only are you damaging your organs by consuming alcohol at such a young age, but it’s highly likely that your round of drinks in the Bahamas is your first-ever experience with alcohol. This means that you might feel very unwell and end up in the hospital. You’ll probably rack up tons of medical debt if you don’t have travel and health insurance.

Health Problems

Social Troubles

Underage drinking might cause you to behave in way you normally wouldn’t. Since liquor lowers your inhibitions, there’s no telling what you might do or say to others. This can lead to serious problems within your social circles and family and might even get you in trouble with the authorities. Teenagers and young people are notorious for acting very aggressively and violently while they’re intoxicated, so it’s a good idea to stay away from liquor if you’re underage and don’t want to ruin your vacation.

Teenagers Drinking: What is Legal Drinking Age in Bahamas

Removal from establishments

Since the laws about underage driving are very strict, hotels, bars, and clubs have to abide by them at all times in order to avoid running into trouble with the authorities. The Bahamas is a popular holiday destination , so hotels and bars already have a lot of guests. Therefore, they don’t need to engage in the illegal practice of entertaining underage drinkers.

Oftentimes, if the staff at a bar or club suspects that you’re a minor who is engaged in underage drinking, they will ask you to leave their establishment. Sometimes, they will even cancel your reservation and report you to law enforcement in order to avoid assuming liability for any untoward incidents that might happen when youngsters are intoxicated.

Public Safety Problems

Drinking is fun, but knowing how to hold your liquor is an art that comes with age and wisdom. It is well known that alcohol dulls your senses and lowers your inhibitions, leaving you with impaired judgment. This problem gets even worse when teenagers are involved.

Public Safety Problems

In order to prevent serious accidents that can harm people, governments have enforced drinking age limits. Following the legal drinking age helps to maintain public safety. Out of all the controlled substances, alcohol causes the most incidents in the world.

In fact, it’s well known that deaths from alcohol annually outnumber deaths from all the other drugs combined.

By regulating access to alcohol, authorities try to reduce the incidents of drunk driving and other alcohol-related incidents, which can put the lives of others at risk.

Final Thoughts

The Bahamas is a wonderful place to spend your vacation days in. The views are fantastic, the environment is lively, and the liquor is always flowing. However, if you’re less than 18 years old, you’ll have to stay away from alcohol and spend your time doing other things.

Minors aren’t usually convicted for underage drinking in the Bahamas; you can never be too careful. One night of drinking is not worth getting into legal trouble and ruining your vacation. Therefore, we advise you to steer clear of alcohol and enjoy the other excellent non-alcoholic drink options in the Bahamas if you haven’t turned 18 yet. Happy travels!

If you’re visiting the Bahamas via a cruise line and plan to visit a private island such as CocoCay or Half Moon Cay, it’s important to note that the cruise lines maintain a legal drinking age of 21 for all cruises originating from the U.S. This applies even though the legal drinking age in the Bahamas is 18.

Drinking Age Comparison with Other Countries

The legal drinking age varies significantly across different countries worldwide. For instance, in the United States, the legal drinking age is 21, which is higher than most other developed countries. Countries such as Indonesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Mongolia, Nauru, Oman, Pakistan, and Samoa also have a legal drinking age of 21. On the other hand, some countries, like Japan and Finland, have set their legal drinking age at 20.

Along with the Bahamas, many countries have set their legal drinking age to 18. Bahamas Drinking Age: Everything You Need To Know

Bahamas Drinking Age

  • Published on June 27, 2023

Mark Simons

The following is a short guide regarding the Bahamas’ drinking age. The Bahamas is an island located in the Caribbean and is pretty much known for its party culture and is a very popular summer tourist destination. If you’re planning to visit the Bahamas and are looking forward to drinking your heart out, then this guide is for you.

The drinking culture in the Bahamas is very exciting, and it’s known for being a party destination for a reason. The questions in this topic will discuss the legal drinking age in the Bahamas, if there are any restrictions, or if parents allow their children to drink alcohol with an accompanying elder. That being said, here we go:

Table of Contents

What is the Legal Drinking Age in the Bahamas?

In the Bahamas, the age for alcohol consumption is 18 years old. Despite it being technically a part of North America, the Bahamas’ legal drinking age is pretty low in comparison to other places in the same area, and this includes the United States. Once you turn 18 in the Bahamas, you must become a fully responsible adult – This means you can serve in the military and vote in the elections.

Bahamian culture also has plenty of coming-of-age rituals, and a lot of them involve drinking alcohol as part of the ceremony. One more reason why the Bahamas has such a low drinking age is because of its reputation as a tourist destination. People would come to the Bahamas to relax, drink, and have fun.

What is the Legal Drinking Age in the Bahamas for Tourists and Foreigners?

For tourists and foreigners visiting the Bahamas, the drinking age is the same – You have to be at least 18 years old and above to drink or buy alcohol. One of the biggest industries in the Bahamas is tourism, and oftentimes, foreign visitors would come to the island for a quick relaxing getaway. Obviously, some of these tourists would want to check out the party scene as well or simply have a nice alcoholic drink by the pool.

Do you Need an ID to Drink in the Bahamas?

Bahamas Drinking Age

If you are a visitor, you would need to carry a passport with you at all times while in the Bahamas. But if you’re planning to visit the bars and have a drink in this tropical country, you must carry two more things: A driver’s license, a valid ID, or just about any legal document that proves your identity and real age.

Legal Drinking Age in the Bahamas with Parents

You must be 18 years old and above to be able to consume or purchase alcohol in the Bahamas, even if you have your parents with you or not. There’s a reason why teenagers cannot drink alcohol at their age. Not only are they too young to handle alcohol properly, but the long-term effects of alcohol consumption can affect their cognition and memories as they become older. There’s also the risk of liver damage.

Legal Drinking Age in the Bahamas by Region

The Bahamas is comprised of several islands, including Bimini, Andros Island, and its capital, Nassau. However, all of them strictly obey the official drinking age of 18 years old. This means that no matter which island you land on in the country if you are below 18, you are not legally allowed to consume, possess, or purchase alcohol.

Can Minors Drink in the Bahamas with Their Parents?

The legal age for consuming alcohol in the Bahamas is 18. There have been instances in which teenagers were able to legally purchase alcohol with (or without) a guardian or parent accompanying them, but it is still not recommended to do so. Nevertheless, there are plenty of non-alcoholic drinks that minors can enjoy when visiting the island.

The only time when a minor in the Bahamas is allowed to consume alcohol is during a religious ceremony or a cultural tradition – But these incidents are very rare.

Consequences of Breaking the Drinking Age Law in the Bahamas

If you are below 18 years old and were found in possession or consuming alcohol, then you are required to pay a hefty fine. The penalties for breaking drinking laws in the Bahamas include paying a whopping $500, and depending on the gravity of the situation, you could also face imprisonment of up to two years.

A Brief Summary of the Bahamas Drinking Age

Hopefully, this discussion was able to answer all of your queries regarding this issue. To sum things up, you have to be at least 18 years old to either drink, own, or purchase alcohol in all islands of the Bahamas. But even if you are way past that age and can drink now, you still need to do things in moderation. The Bahamas is a great place to go on vacation, whether with friends, family members, or by yourself – As long as you do so responsibly and follow the right Bahamas drinking age.

Home » What You Need to Know About Bahamas Legal Drinking Age Compliance

The Bahamas, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant culture, welcomes tourists with open arms. However, visitors should be aware of the local laws, particularly regarding alcohol consumption. The legal drinking age is set at 18, aligning with the age of majority when Bahamians gain voting rights and military eligibility. This reflects the societal trust placed in young adults to make responsible choices.

Tourists Guide to Understand Bahamas Legal Alcohol Drinking Age Laws Compliance

Table of Contents

Insights for the Informed Traveler to Understand the Bahamas’ Drinking Age

Crucial consideration for visitors to compliance with the bahamas’ drinking age, the importance of adhering to the legal drinking age, essential identification for alcohol consumption in the bahamas, the bahamas’ firm stance on drinking age regulations, consequences of underage drinking in the bahamas, drinking age policy on bahamas cruises, public alcohol consumption in the bahamas, global drinking age policies, drinking age variations and cultural norms, youth drinking age and alcohol prohibition, tropical spirits: the quintessential bahamian drink experience, concluding thoughts on bahamian drinking culture.

In contrast to the United States where the legal drinking age is 21, the Bahamas allows individuals who are 18 to partake in alcoholic beverages. This policy is deeply rooted in cultural practices that celebrate the transition into adulthood at 18, often with alcohol present in ceremonial contexts. Moreover, considering the pivotal role of tourism in the nation’s economy, this age threshold caters to the expectations of international visitors looking to unwind with a drink in hand.

It’s crucial for travelers to respect these regulations to avoid severe consequences such as fines or deportation. Adhering to the Bahamian drinking age ensures a trouble-free holiday experience.

The Bahamas enforces a uniform drinking age of 18 across all its territories, including Nassau, CocoCay, and Atlantis. Exceptions to this rule are limited and typically involve religious practices, such as wine used in communion. It’s essential for visitors to adhere to this law, as non-compliance could lead to arrest and penalties, including fines and imprisonment. While enforcement may vary, with warnings often issued in lieu of harsher punishments, the potential for legal repercussions remains.

Respecting the legal drinking age is vital for several reasons. It upholds the law, encourages responsible drinking, and contributes to public safety. Alcohol-related incidents, including drunk driving, pose significant risks; thus, legal age restrictions aim to mitigate these dangers. For tourists, understanding and observing these laws is part of being a responsible traveler and ensures a positive experience in the Bahamas.

To indulge in alcoholic beverages in the Bahamas, visitors must carry a valid passport at all times. Additionally, a driver’s license or another photo ID proving age is required for purchasing alcohol. This ensures that tourists can enjoy the local offerings while remaining within legal boundaries.

Essential Identification for Alcohol Consumption in the Bahamas

The Bahamian government enforces the drinking age of 18 with rigor. Establishments found serving alcohol to minors may incur heavy fines, license suspensions, or even imprisonment. Random compliance checks are conducted to uphold this law, emphasizing the importance of adherence by both businesses and individuals to avoid severe penalties.

Underage individuals caught with alcohol may face up to $500 in fines or two years of imprisonment, underscoring the strict enforcement of the law. The severity of penalties can vary, highlighting the need for young visitors to respect the legal drinking age.

Cruise lines in the Bahamas generally adhere to the drinking age laws of their registration country. Major cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line mandate a drinking age of 21 on board. Some may permit 18 to 20-year-olds to drink under parental supervision, but policies differ among cruise lines, necessitating passengers to verify before travel.

While public drinking is permitted in the Bahamas, responsible consumption is paramount. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy themselves without overindulgence or disruptive behavior.

The legal drinking age varies worldwide, reflecting each country’s cultural and legal frameworks. In the United States, the threshold is 21, higher than many other nations. This is attributed to health concerns and the desire to mitigate impaired judgment associated with alcohol consumption.

Global Drinking Age Policies

While the Bahamas and numerous other countries set the legal drinking age at 18, some nations like Japan and Finland have it at 20. Many countries do not specify a drinking age, though they may restrict alcohol purchases to those 18 and older. Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland are among these, aligning with regional cultural norms.

A few countries, such as Austria, Morocco, and Russia, allow legal drinking from the age of 16. Conversely, alcohol is entirely prohibited in some predominantly Muslim countries, though exceptions may exist for tourists or non-Muslim residents.

The Bahamas is synonymous with its signature tropical beverages, each offering a unique taste of island life. Among the must-try drinks are:

  • The Painkiller : A creamy concoction of rum, pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and orange juice, topped with a dash of nutmeg.
  • Goombay Smash : A potent mix featuring pineapple juice, orange juice, and a trio of rums, garnished with pineapple and orange.
  • Rum Punch : A staple in the Bahamas, this vibrant blend combines orange, pineapple, and lime juices with rum and a splash of grenadine.
  • Bahama Mama : A slushy delight made with orange and pineapple juices, various rums, and grenadine, served over crushed ice.
  • Classic Daiquiri : A simple yet refreshing mix of white rum, lime juice, and sugar, ideal for cooling down under the tropical sun.

While indulging in these delectable drinks, it’s important to stay hydrated and consume responsibly to ensure a pleasant and safe vacation experience.

Embracing the laid-back Bahamian lifestyle includes enjoying local cocktails responsibly. Remember to hydrate, use reef-safe sunscreen, and always have a safe way to return after a night out. Familiarize yourself with the local laws to avoid any legal issues and ensure your vacation remains a fond memory.

Drinking Age on a Cruise: Can You Drink Under 21?

The legal drinking age in the United States is 21 years old. There’s no getting around it. If you want to buy booze, you have to be of legal age or face some serious consequences.

But what about on the drinking age on a cruise? Do you still have to be 21? After all, we’ve all heard of “international waters” — a magical place just a few miles offshore where the normal rules don’t apply. Doesn’t that mean if you are under the legal drinking age, but not in the U.S., that you can live it up?

Well, not so fast. If you are under the legal drinking age on shore, there is some good news in that yes, you can drink on your cruise… but not necessarily on the ship.

Drinking Age on a Cruise Ship in North America

drinking age on cruise to bahamas

Ok, first things first. Most cruises won’t let you drink on the cruise ship if you aren’t 21 years old (assuming your cruise is departing and returning to the U.S.) . Here are the official policies of three major cruise lines as listed on their websites:

Royal Caribbean The minimum age to consume alcohol on Royal Caribbean International ships on sailings originating in North America is twenty-one (21).

Carnival Guests must be 21 years of age or older to be served alcohol onboard. Proper I.D with birth date is required.

Princess Cruises The age for drinking on Princess ships is 21 years old.

So if you are sailing one of these cruise lines, even with a parent on board, then you can’t drink while on the ship.

However, Norwegian Cruise Lines is more lax in their policy. If you are considered a “young adult” (meaning 18-20 years old) and you are sailing with a parent who signs a waiver, then you can drink wine and beer aboard the ship — but not cocktails.

Norwegian Cruise Lines Passengers must be 21 years of age or older to purchase or consume alcohol.

With the exception of Alaska and Hawaii itineraries, Norwegian Cruise Line permits young adults to purchase and personally consume wine and beer only while onboard and with the consent of an accompanying parent. Authorization will be given only when the accompanying parent completes the Young Adult Alcoholic Beverage Waiver form. This form can be obtained and completed at the Guest Services Desk upon embarkation of the vessel.

Drinking Age on Non-North America Sailings

Many countries have a drinking age that’s lower than the 21 years old seen in the United States. If you are sailing a cruise outside of North America, then the drinking age onboard is likely 18 years old . This usually includes sailings from Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia.

For example, Royal Caribbean makes the following adjustment for the onboard drinking age for many trips outside of North America:

  • The minimum age to consume alcohol on Royal Caribbean International ships on sailings from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand is eighteen (18).

Princess also specifies that the drinking age is 18 years old on its cruises in Australia, China, Europe, Singapore, and South America.

In short, if sailing from outside North America, then the drinking age is normally lower.

Drinking in a Port of Call

Once you are in a port and off the ship, the cruise line’s rules no longer apply to you. Instead, you are under the laws and regulations of that country. Therefore, if the country’s legal age limit is 18 to consume or buy alcohol, then that’s the rule that applies when ashore — not the cruise ship’s policy. Note that if you are on a cruise line’s private island, even if it is in a country with a lower drinking age, then the cruise line’s rules on drinking will apply.

For those under 21, you’ll be happy to know that the legal drinking age throughout the Caribbean is 18 years or under. In addition, a couple of countries have drinking limits of 16.

Drinking Age for Selected Countries

  • Antigua: 16 years old
  • Bahamas: 18 years old
  • Belize: 18 years old
  • Bermuda: 18 years old
  • British Virgin Islands: 18 years old
  • Cayman Islands: 18 years old
  • Haiti: 16 years old
  • Honduras: 18 years old
  • Jamaica: 18 years old
  • Mexico: 18 years old
  • Puerto Rico: 18 years old
  • US Virgin Islands: 18 years old

What if I Am Caught Drinking While Underage?

The rules are very clear about drinking on a cruise and in port. If you are under 21 and sailing from North America, you better wait until you arrive at a port before taking a sip. If you are under 18, then most ports and the cruise ship are off limits.

But what if you decide to sneak a drink anyway?

If you are on the cruise ship, there’s a chance that it could end your trip early. Carnival makes the following statement in its ticket contract:

Guests who attempt to purchase alcohol by using false identification or the Sail & Sign card of a Guest who is twenty-one or older will be deemed in violation of this policy. Any Guest twenty-one or older who attempts to or purchases alcohol for any Guest under twenty-one will also be deemed in violation of this policy. Guest agrees that Carnival has the right to disembark any Guest who violates this policy and as well as any adults traveling with minors who violate this policy or any other shipboard regulation .

While getting kicked off the ship may be a possibility, we find it unlikely. That’s not to suggest that you try and test your luck.

How The Legal Drinking Age In The Bahamas Was Established

Historical context of the legal drinking age.

The legal drinking age in the Bahamas has a unique history that dates back to the country’s colonial past. During the 18th and 19th centuries, The Bahamas served as a major hub for the rum trade, with the production and consumption of alcohol being an integral part of the local culture. As a result, there were few restrictions on the consumption of alcohol, and it was not uncommon for underage individuals to be served alcoholic beverages.

However, with the establishment of The Bahamas as a British colony in 1717, the legal drinking age was set at 16 years old by British law at the time. This remained the case until 1988, when the government raised the legal drinking age to 18.

Factors Contributing To The Decision

Concerns over the health and safety of young individuals primarily drove the decision to raise the legal drinking age in The Bahamas. The government wanted to reduce the risk of alcohol-related incidents and protect young people from the potential harms associated with underage drinking.

Additionally, there were international pressures to raise the legal drinking age, with many countries setting the legal age at 18 or higher. By raising the legal drinking age, The Bahamas aligned itself with global standards and ensured locals’ and visitors’ safety and well-being.

In conclusion, the legal drinking age in The Bahamas has evolved, reflecting changing attitudes toward alcohol and an increasing awareness of the potential consequences of underage drinking. The decision to raise the legal drinking age to 18 years old was driven by a desire to promote responsible consumption and ensure the safety of young individuals.

Pros And Cons Of Lower Legal Drinking Ages

Countries with a lower legal drinking age argue it can promote responsible drinking. Young adults can learn about alcohol and develop their tolerance in a controlled environment. They argue that setting the drinking age too high encourages binge drinking and encourages illegal and reckless behavior.

However, critics of lower legal drinking ages argue that it can lead to problems such as alcohol abuse and drunk driving incidents. They note that younger individuals may not be able to handle alcohol as well as older adults, leading to potentially dangerous situations.

We’ll help break it down so you’ll be prepared and enjoy a hassle-free trip.

Can You Drink At 18 On A Cruise?

Different cruise lines have different regulations, but generally, 18-year-olds can visit bars or nightclubs alone or with friends and family who are also 18+. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the legal drinking age on all ships that dock in the U.S, as well as many U.S.-based cruise lines worldwide, is 21.

For cruises sailing between Australia, New Zealand, China, Europe, and Singapore, you’ll find that the drinking age is 18 years old.

On the other hand, if you’re cruising between Japanese ports, the legal age increases to 20 years old.

Keep in mind that some cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, may require parental consent if you are under 21 years old.

This could be applicable for cruises outside North America, including Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia.

As you can see, your ability to drink at 18 on a cruise largely depends on where you’re sailing and the specific cruise line’s rules.

Let’s break down these rules and regulations a little further so you know exactly what you’re signing up for…

Drinking Age On Cruises

General Rules For Having A Drink On A Cruise

On most cruise ships, the drinking age is 21 when the ship is within US waters.

However, the age limit varies between 18 to 21 years old as you sail in international waters or aboard some cruise lines.

This can depend on the cruise line’s policies, the destination, and the country of departure.

For instance, on Royal Caribbean cruises , the minimum drinking age for all alcoholic beverages is 21, making it consistent throughout all their ships.

It’s crucial to respect the rules set by each cruise line, as those who break them may face consequences, including parents who supply alcohol to their underage children.

International Waters

When sailing in international waters, some cruise lines may allow passengers aged 18-20 to consume alcohol.

Norwegian Cruise Line is an example of this, as they permit passengers between 18 and 20 years old to drink alcohol once the ship leaves international waters.

However, parental consent is required for guests under 21.

It’s essential to keep in mind that while some cruise lines allow for a lower drinking age, this may only apply when the ship is in international waters, so make sure you’re aware of the rules and restrictions for each stage of your journey.

In summary, understanding the drinking age policies on different cruise lines and in various regions is key to ensuring a smooth sailing experience.

By respecting these guidelines, you can have a fun and enjoyable cruise vacation without any unexpected hiccups.

Cruise Line Policies

Cruise ship at port

Carnival Cruise Lines

On Carnival Cruise Lines, the drinking age is generally 21 years old. However, when sailing from a non-U.S. port, such as the ones in Europe or Australia, the legal drinking age is lowered to 18 years old.

This is so Carnival can comply with the drinking age policies in those countries. Remember that this policy may sometimes vary and can be subject to change.

Royal Caribbean Cruises

If you find yourself on a Royal Caribbean cruise, you’ll notice that the legal drinking age is 21 years old onboard all their ships.

However, there is an exception when sailing from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, or New Zealand, where the minimum age to consume alcohol is lowered to 18.

Nevertheless, it’s important to keep in mind that the drinking age at private destinations remains 21, regardless of the sailing origin.

Norwegian Cruise Lines

With Norwegian Cruise Lines, guests aged 18-20 years old can purchase and consume beer or wine when the ship is in international waters (3 miles out of U.S. territorial waters).

Parental consent is required for all cruises where guests are under 21 years old. It’s worth noting that this age modification does not apply for Alaska and Hawaii sailings.

Be attentive to the specific policy details before embarking on a Norwegian Cruise.

Princess Cruise Lines

Princess Cruise Lines takes a strict approach, maintaining a 21 years or older drinking age policy for all beverages across their ships despite the originating location.

This policy applies throughout the duration of the cruise and does not change based on the ship’s location.

Make sure you’re aware of this policy if you plan to sail with Princess Cruise Lines.

Impact of Port Laws

Embarkation Location

When planning your cruise, it’s essential to consider the embarkation location as it can affect your drinking age while onboard.

For instance, if your cruise embarks from a U.S. port, you will usually need to be 21 years old to consume alcohol.

However, exceptions apply when the ship sails at least 3 miles outside of U.S. territorial waters. In these cases, you can purchase and consume beer and wine if you are between 18 to 20 years old.

Parental consent will be required, and a form needs to be signed to grant permission for this age group.

Outside of the United States, different embarkation locations may offer varying drinking age restrictions.

For example, if your cruise departs from a port in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, China, or Singapore, the drinking age may be lower at 18 years old.

In Japan, the legal drinking age is 20 years old. Make sure to research the specific policies of your cruise line before booking.

Port of Calls

As your cruise takes you to different ports of call, keep in mind that local laws may impact your drinking privileges.

Each country has its own legal drinking age, which may affect your ability to consume alcohol both onboard and ashore. Be aware of these restrictions and follow the local laws at each destination.

For example, when visiting a port in the Caribbean, the local drinking age may range from 18 to 21 years old.

On the other hand, countries in Europe typically have a lower drinking age, which is often 18 years old.

To help keep things clear, familiarize yourself with the drinking age policies at the following port categories:

  • Caribbean Ports: Drinking age ranges between 18 to 21 years old.
  • European Ports: Drinking age is typically 18 years old.
  • Asian Ports: Drinking age varies depending on the country, with Japan requiring passengers to be 20 years old.

Ultimately, it’s up to you to stay informed about the drinking age restrictions for both your embarkation location and each port of call you visit during your cruise.

Keep in mind that these policies are subject to change and may vary between cruise lines.

Taking these factors into account will ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable sailing experience while respecting local laws.

Can You Drink At 18 In International Waters?

Many cruise lines have policies that prohibit passengers under the age of 21 from consuming alcohol.

However, there are a few exceptions, especially when in international waters.

If you’re 18 and interested in enjoying an alcoholic beverage during your cruise, you’ll be pleased to know that several cruise lines allow passengers aged 18 to 20 to drink in international waters.

Some require parental consent, while others simply have age restrictions in place.

Below is a quick list of cruise lines that permit drinking at 18 in international waters:

  • Celebrity Cruises (requires parental permission)
  • Costa Cruises
  • Cunard Cruises
  • Disney cruises (requires parental permission)
  • Holland America
  • MSC Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line (requires parental permission)
  • P&O Cruises

Keep in mind that these policies may change and it’s important to check with your specific cruise line before booking.

While many cruise lines will allow drinking at 18 in international waters, they may still have restrictions in place, especially when approaching U.S. or Middle Eastern ports.

Be sure to familiarize yourself with the cruise itinerary, as the legal drinking age on board may be determined by the itinerary rather than international waters.

In most cases, if a U.S. or Middle Eastern port is on your itinerary, you won’t be allowed to drink at 18, even when the ship is in international waters.

Can You Drink At 18 On A Bahamas Cruise?

When it comes to the legal drinking age, the Bahamas has set it at 18 years old. This means that, technically, while you’re exploring the picturesque islands in the Bahamas, you can indeed enjoy a local beverage if you’re 18 or older.

However, things get a little bit more complicated when you’re aboard the cruise ship.

Cruise lines each have their own set of rules for the minimum drinking age on their ships.

Although the legal drinking age in the Bahamas is 18, many cruise lines have a strict 21-year-old policy when it comes to consuming alcoholic beverages on their vessels.

For example, Royal Caribbean International requires that all passengers consuming alcoholic beverages on their ships be 21 or older if the sailing originates from North America or the Caribbean.

Now, there’s a bit of a caveat here – some cruise lines have private islands in the Bahamas, such as Carnival’s Half Moon Cay or Disney’s Castaway Cay. While you’re on these islands, you might assume that the Bahamian legal drinking age applies.

However, keep in mind that each cruise line has its own set of rules, which could still require passengers to be 21 or older to drink, even on their private islands.

One more thing to remember is that some cruises may allow 18-year-olds to drink on the ship while in international waters, but not while docked at a port in the United States or other countries with stricter drinking ages.

Additionally, there could be certain ports, like Amsterdam, where you’re allowed to indulge in specific activities while ashore but not on the ship.

Can 18 Year Olds Drink On Cruises In Mexico?

If your cruise itinerary includes a stop at a Mexican port, you’ll generally be allowed to drink alcohol according to local laws when you’re ashore, as their legal drinking age is 18.

This means you can indulge in some local flavors and cocktails while exploring Mexico’s popular tourist destinations.

However, it is important to note that the drinking age onboard the ship may be different. Most cruise ships enforce a minimum drinking age of 21, especially if the cruise originates from a US port.

It means that even if you are in international waters or within Mexican territory, you might not be allowed to buy or consume alcoholic beverages on the ship.

For instance, on most Carnival cruises , the minimum age to purchase and consume alcohol on the ship is 21, regardless of the legal drinking age in the destination ports.

Similarly, Royal Caribbean International has a minimum drinking age of 21 for sailings originating from North America or the Caribbean.

Although these rules may seem strict, they’re in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all passengers, including families and young adults. It’s crucial that you respect the cruise line’s policies and adhere to the age restrictions while on board.

In summary, if you’re 18 and cruising to Mexico, you can drink while ashore and exploring the local destinations.

However, be prepared for the possibility that you might not be able to consume alcohol on the ship, depending on the cruise line’s policies.

Always make sure to double-check the cruise guidelines and age restrictions before booking your vacation to avoid any disappointment or complications during your journey.

Legal drinking age on cruise ships: What you need to know

Legal drinking age on cruise ships: Are you planning a cruise but want to be sure you meet the legal drinking age? Perhaps you are wondering if your older kids can join you for a beverage on your upcoming cruise. Understanding the legal drinking age aboard cruise ships is crucial in any circumstance.

To ensure you properly plan your next holiday, you will learn the minimum age to drink on cruise ships in this article.

Ambassador Cruise Line Drinks: Cost and Packages

The legal drinking age on cruise ships

Alcohol on Cruise Ships, can you bring Alcohol on Cruise Ships

It varies what age is legal to drink on cruise ships. What ship you are on, where you are leaving from, and where you are going to end up are all factors that affect the minimum age requirements.

You can select a cruise that complies with the minimum drinking age in most parts of the world, which ranges from 16 to 18.

It’s crucial to remember, though, that all ships that dock in the United States and many international cruise companies with their headquarters in the United States have a legal drinking age of 21.

The legal drinking age for cruises departing from Australia and traveling through New Zealand, China, Europe, and Singapore is eighteen.

However, the legal age rises to 20 if you’re traveling between Japanese ports while on a cruise.

Remember that if you are under 21, some cruise lines, like Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, might need your parents’ permission.

This may be relevant to cruises taking place in regions other than North America, such as Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia. As you can see, where you’re traveling and the policies of that particular cruise line will have a big impact on whether you can drink on a trip at the age of 18.

Let’s take a closer look at these guidelines so you can understand exactly what you’re getting into.

General Guidelines for Drinking While Cruising

Royal Caribbean drink prices, Royal Caribbean drink prices 2024, Royal Caribbean menu

When a cruise ship is in US territorial waters, the standard drinking age is 21. However, whether you travel in international seas or on some cruise lines, the age restriction varies from 18 to 21 years old. The policies of the cruise company, the destination, and the country of departure may all have an impact on this. For example, the legal drinking age for all alcoholic beverages on Royal Caribbean cruises is 21, and this applies to all of their ships.

Respecting the policies established by each cruise company is essential since violators, particularly parents who provide alcohol to their minor children, risk facing repercussions.

International Waters

Some cruise lines permit guests who are between the ages of 18 and 20 to imbibe alcohol when traveling in foreign waters.

One example of this is the Norwegian Cruise Line, which allows alcohol consumption for guests between the ages of 18 and 20 as soon as the ship departs international waters.

However, visitors under 21 must have parental approval.

Remember that although some cruise lines permit a lower drinking age, this might only be applicable when the ship is in international waters. Be sure you are aware of the regulations and limitations for each leg of your trip.

In conclusion, the secret to guaranteeing a peaceful sailing experience is to be aware of the drinking age regulations on various cruise lines and in different places.

You can experience an unexpectedly hassle-free cruise holiday by adhering to these suggestions.

Carnival Cruise Lines Policies

The standard drinking age on Carnival Cruise Lines is 21. However, the legal drinking age is reduced to 18 when sailing from a port outside of the United States, such as those in Europe or Australia.

Royal Caribbean drink prices 2024: Cost and Menu This is to ensure that Carnival complies with those nations’ laws on the legal drinking age. Keep in mind that this policy could alter or modify at any time.

Royal Caribbean

The legal drinking age on all Royal Caribbean cruises is 21, as you will note if you happen to be aboard one of their ships. Except, that is, if you’re sailing out of South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, or New Zealand, where the legal drinking age is reduced to 18.

However, it’s crucial to remember that, regardless of the sailing origin, the drinking age at private locations is still 21.

Norwegian Cruise Lines

When the ship is in international waters—three miles outside of U.S. territorial waters—guests between the ages of eighteen and twenty-one may purchase and consume wine or beer on Norwegian Cruise Lines.

Any cruise with attendees under the age of 21 must have parental approval. It is important to note that sailings to Alaska and Hawaii are not subject to this age change.

Prior to boarding a Norwegian Cruise, pay close attention to the precise policy specifics.

Princess Cruise Lines

Princess Cruise Lines adopts a rigorous stance, upholding a 21-year-old minimum drinking age for all of their ships’ beverages, regardless of where they are made.

The ship’s location has no bearing on this policy, which is in effect for the entire cruise.

If you intend to travel with Princess Cruise Lines, be sure you are aware of this policy.

Alcohol on Cruise Ships: Age Restrictions, Drink Packages, and Prohibited Items

The effects of port laws

drinking age on cruise to bahamas

The site of embarkation is a crucial factor to take into account when organizing your trip because it influences your onboard drinking age.

For example, if your cruise ships out of a port in the United States, you will typically need to be 21 years old to drink alcohol.

There are, however, some exclusions if the ship travels more than three miles outside of US territorial seas. In these situations, if you’re between the ages of 18 and 20, you’re allowed to buy and drink wine and beer.

For this age group, parental authorization will be necessary, and permission must be granted by signing a form.

There may be variations in the drinking age limits at different embarkation points outside of the United States.

For instance, the legal drinking age may be lowered to 18 if your cruise leaves from a port in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, China, or Singapore.

The legal drinking age in Japan is twenty years old. Before making a reservation, be sure you understand the specific policies of your cruise line.

Port of Calls

Remember that the rules of the places you visit while on your cruise may affect your ability to drink.

The legal drinking age in each nation varies, which could limit your options for consuming alcohol both onboard and off. Recognize these limitations and abide with the laws of the place you are visiting.

For instance, the legal drinking age in a Caribbean port may be between 18 and 21 years old. However, the legal drinking age in most European countries is lower—it is commonly 18 years old. Learn about the drinking age regulations at the following port types to help keep things clear:

  • Caribbean Ports: The legal drinking age is eighteen to twenty-one.
  • European Ports: the legal drinking age is normally eighteen.
  • Asian Ports: Each country has a different legal drinking age; in Japan, for example, passengers must be 20 years old.

In the end, it is your responsibility to remain aware of the legal drinking age in each port of call that you visit throughout your cruise as well as the site of your embarkation.

Remember that these guidelines could alter or differ between cruise operators.

By keeping these things in mind, you can make sure that your sailing experience is seamless and pleasurable while still adhering to local laws.

Private Island Exceptions to the Drinking Age

People private destination pool

Some cruise lines offer private islands as potential destinations; their private island drinking age policies differ from those of their ships. Here are a few instances:

  • Norwegian Cruise Line: To possess or consume alcohol at the cruise line’s exclusive locations, guests must be at least 21 years old.
  • Royal Caribbean International: The minimum drinking age for private islands on Royal Caribbean International ships is 21, regardless of the departure place.
  • Celebrity Cruises: To drink alcohol at any of the company’s exclusive locations, you must be at least 21 years old.
  • Holland America: All Holland America ships have a 21-year-old minimum drinking age. Verifying Identity on Cruise Ships

On a cruise, not all regulations are supposed to be broken! When you ask for a drink on a cruise ship, they will verify your ID if you appear underage. The same holds for areas that are only accessible to people who meet a particular minimum age. You can receive a wristband stating that you are a minor.

Cruise Ship Bar

Bar on a cruise

For instance, some cruise ships let guests into the casino as young as 18, but drinking is only permitted for those who are at least 21. As a result, you can receive a bracelet to let the personnel know that you are a minor.

Packaged Drinks and Children

Numerous cruise lines provide drink packages designed exclusively for minors, which do not include any alcoholic beverages. For instance, MSC Cruises offers coffee, energy, and soft drinks as part of their drink package for kids. For $30 per person per day, Celebrity Cruises also provides a zero-proof package that includes some delectable zero-proof beverages that kids can enjoy with their parents.

Below is a quick list of cruise lines that permit drinking at 18 in international waters:

  • Celebrity Cruises (requires parental permission)
  • Costa Cruises
  • Cunard Cruises
  • Disney cruises (requires parental permission)
  • Holland America
  • MSC Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line (requires parental permission)
  • P&O Cruises

Best Bahamas Cruises

C ruises to the Bahamas are filled with sun, soft sands, and the opportunity to dip your toes in a warm and seductive crystal blue sea. The 700-island archipelago is the kind of oasis you dream of when, in my case at least, you're indoors on a cold and dark day in Cleveland. Exploring the islands is tricky by air, but much easier via ship. Bahamas cruises to take right now include quick jaunts from easy-to-get-to Florida ports as well as one-week and longer cruises that explore more deeply. You can sail there in less than a day from Florida (cruises tend to embark in the early evening and hang out at sea until the next morning ashore), which makes it both an easy escape for a quick getaway or somewhere to linger for even more rest and relaxation.

What to expect on a Bahamas cruise

The main places cruise ships visit in the Bahamas are Nassau, the capital city, and some of the islands and beaches that are affiliated with cruise lines, such as Disney's private family wonderland Castaway Cay, off Great Abaco Island. There are small ships that explore further, including to the southern reaches of the archipelago.

Cruise passengers will find opportunities to hike in national parks, enjoy nearly deserted beaches, and explore many small churches-the Bahamas boasts more churches per capita than anywhere else in the world.

In the Bahamian capital of Nassau on New Providence Island, visitors can get a better understanding of the nation's British colonial and West African slave history as well as of the Junkanoo culture and festivals at wonderful museums. Most day visitors, though, are typically focused on water attractions: heading off on diving or snorkeling excursions, boarding party boats with free-flowing rum punch, experiencing the beaches, swimming pools, and waterslides at the Atlantis Bahamas resort on Paradise Island, or trying to catch the big one on fishing charters.

On small ship itineraries, you may stop at San Salvador Island, where Christopher Columbus may or may not have made his first landing in the New World. (Historians quibble on the exact landing spot.) A white cross memorializes the supposed landing spot. Long Island, which stretches some 80 miles, has both rugged and sandy coasts and the natural attraction of Dean's Blue Hole, one of the deepest sinkholes in the world at 663 feet, a place where divers and snorkelers can mingle with turtles and tarpons. The small island of Bimini is known for its clean beaches and rich marine life-hanging out at beach clubs, seeking quiet escapes in the land, and watching for dolphins and other sea creatures are prime activities.

Other cruise destinations include Eleuthera, with its inviting pink sands and protected park areas. In addition to beaches, the 365-island chain known as the Exumas are famous for swimming pigs (though they also live elsewhere in the Bahamas).

That said, if you splurge on a suite in the Retreat, you'll have your own sundeck with hot tub, enjoy private lounge access, and dine at the exclusive restaurant Luminae, where signature dishes by Celebrity's culinary ambassador, Daniel Boulud, are featured on the rotating menu-such as creamy carrot and ginger velouté and Moroccan chicken tagine with saffron couscous. Or borrow paddleboards and kayaks from the ship's marina for your own solo exploration.
