Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Pangasinan summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Pangasinan in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

1 |  Explore Hundred Islands

Out of more than 7,000 islands in the Philippines, more than a hundred of those are found in the Alaminos City alone.  Hundred Islands National Park covers an area of 16.76 square kilometers and the total number of islands is 123 at high tide and 124 at low tide but only four of them have been developed for tourism.  The whole area, believed to have formed about two million years ago, is protected.  Some of the islands are blessed with white sand beaches, others with limestone cliffs.  Some of the inhabitants include the Philippine Coucal, Philippine Hawk-Cuckoo, White-eared Brown-Dove, angelfish, thresher shark, and the Philippine Duck which the population is considered vulnerable due to habitat loss and overhunting.

There are several agencies and companies in the area offering island-hopping tours.

2 | See the attractions in Bolinao

Bolinao is a fishing town and is being pushed to be included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to a number of heritage sites in town.  It also has several natural wonders such as Patar Beach with its golden sand and clear blue waters, Enchanted Cave with its natural pool, Bolinao Falls, and Balingasay River which is considered one of the cleanest rivers in the Philippines.  The historic Bolinao Lighthouse is also a popular tourist attraction as it offers scenic views of the surrounding area.

3 | Pray at the Manaoag Church

The centuries-old Manaoag Church survived the test of time as well as earthquake, bombings and attacks.  The grand structure is standing on top of a hill and inside the church are statues including that of Black Nazarene, Santo Entierro, and the Virgin Mary.  Claimed to be miraculous, thousands of devotees flock to Manaoag Church every year to pray to Our Lady of Manaoag for their own miracles.  Some of the miracles are even depicted in murals inside the church.

4 | Beachbum at Lingayen Beach

Located in the province’s capital, Lingayen Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Pangasinan.  It’s a public beach with powdery sand perfect for beach and water activities like swimming, camping, and ATV riding.  In the area are resorts and restaurants serving authentic Pangasinense cuisine.

5 | Go on a pilgrimage tour at Sky Plaza

Apart from Manaoag Church, another pilgrimage site to visit in Pangasinan is Sky Plaza, a public park and ecotourism site located at the foot of the Caraballo Mountains.  On the upper parts of the hill are the grotto of the Virgin Mary, a 30-foot Holy Cross, and a 40-foot statue of Christ the Redeemer on the topmost.  Aside from the religious structures, Sky Plaza also boasts of its octagon-shaped multipurpose hall, zipline, and picnic tables.

6 | Enjoy the beauty of Tayug Sunflower Eco Park

Despite the name, sunflowers are not the only flowers found in Tayug Sunflower Eco Park.  There are also celosia, marigold, petunia, ornamental plants as well as vegetables.  The highlight of the park is its sunflower maze, the first ever in the country.  The maze comprises more than 8,000 sunflowers and covers an area of over 2,000 square meters.

7 | Explore Tondol White Sand Beach

Tondol White Sand Beach is often compared to Boracay due to its fine white sand and clear waters.  The long stretch of beach is perfect for families even with children as the shallow waters stretch out far from the shore.

8 | Take a dip in the waters of Cabongaoan Beach

Located in the remote part of the town of Burgos, Cabongaoan Beach is fast becoming popular among tourists due to its white sand, clear waters, and its Death Pool, a natural pool that is challenging to reach due to the rock formations.  Despite its name, Death Pool is actually not dangerous.

9 | Hike Mt. Balungao

Mt. Balungao is an inactive volcano located in the town of Balungao.  Its peak is at 382 meters above sea level and a perfect choice for short hikes through forested trails.  The peak offers the scenic views of Pangasinan as well as the Cordilleras.  At the foot is Balungao Hot and Cold Spring where you can cool down and relax after the hike.

10 | Explore Dagupan City

Dagupan is an independent city that is geographically located in Pangasinan.  Aside from being one of the top producers of milkfish in the country, Dagupan is blessed with beaches and a river where you can do the river cruise.  There are also other attractions such as museums, centuries-old church, and heritage sites.

Suggested Budget

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.    AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB .

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly.

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips.

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option.

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

We recommend booking online to save money using:  Skysca n ner ,  momondo ,  Kayak ,  kiwi.com .

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter.

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

The following is some of our best advice on traveling to Pangasinan.  Learn what you need to know BEFORE you go!

Tips & Hacks

he following are our Top 10 Tips when visiting this destination in the Philippines:

  • Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
  • Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
  • Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
  • Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
  • Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
  • Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
  • It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
  • Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
  • Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
  • Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Pangasinan, you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Consult your hotel or resort front desk as they are more likely to give you reliable information than a random stranger on the street. Be careful when approaching strangers and selective about who you approach. Always pay attention to your gut feeling and follow it.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Recommended Travel Apps

Apps for smartphones and tablets can be useful both before you leave and while you’re traveling.  Most are available for iPhones and Android phones.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling in Pangasinan or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

Things to do in Hundred Islands

There’s definitely more to Hundred Islands than mere sightseeing. Here are the top activities to do here:

1. Island hopping

Hundred Islands island hopping

Of course, every Hundred Islands experience starts with island hopping. Our assigned banca (outrigger boat) toured us around the national park where we visited the taklobo (giant clam) sanctuary and passed by some uniquely shaped islands like Turtle Island and Crocodile Island .

Turtle Island and Crocodile Island in Pangasinan

We also stopped by the tourist islands including Quezon Island where we saw Manuel Quezon’s big statue, and Governor’s Island where we had fun picture-taking outside Bahay ni Kuya (Pinoy Big Brother House). We also entered the Cuenco Cave near Children’s Island .

Overall, our island hopping experience was so fun and memorable!

2. Swimming and snorkeling

Travel tips

  • As you’ll mostly be outdoors, wear something comfortable that’s also ready for a beach getaway.
  • Use reef-friendly sunscreen if possible.
  • Bring some snacks and drinks in case you feel famished along the way.
  • You may bring extra clothes if you want to swim or do water activities.
  • If you want to protect your mobile phones and other gadgets, we recommend using waterproof bags.
  • Follow the protocols set by the tourism office.
  • Respect your tour guide and stay close to your group.
  • Do not leave any trash and keep the environment clean at all times.

Is Hundred Islands worth visiting and would we recommend it?

Yes, it is worth visiting, especially if you love nature and the outdoors. However, if you easily get tired of long trips, a day tour may not be ideal for you. We suggest that you stay near the area for a night like we did. We actually spent a night in one of the budget-friendly accommodations in Alaminos City so we didn’t have to rush home.

But if you don’t mind the long land travel, go for a Hundred Islands day tour as it’s convenient and more practical since you won’t have to pay for a place to stay in Pangasinan.

EXPERIENCE HUNDRED ISLANDS

So, when are you planning to check Hundred Islands off your travel bucket list?

After Hundred Islands, why not continue your adventure to the Ilocos Region and visit Vigan City and Ilocos Norte ? Be sure to pick up some useful Ilocano words and phrases before you get there!

Things to do in Pangasinan

With most local and international tourists flocking to La Union, Pangasinan is often an overlooked tourism destination. However, the province has plenty of beautiful beaches and other bodies of water, not to mention scrumptious local cuisine.

If you’re looking for an alternative vacation destination up north, here are 8 things to do in Pangasinan to add to your itinerary, from island hopping to dining at a floating restaurant.

Table of Contents

1. Check out the sand bar at Panacalan Island

2. discover the many waterfalls in the province, 3. enjoy the beach and food options at the lingayen bay walk, 4. taste pangasinan’s local delicacies, 5. get free grilled fish at the bangus festival, 6. go on an adventure at balungao hilltop adventure, 7. indulge in seafood on a floating restaurant at sungayan grill, 8. island hop at the hundred islands national park, attractions and activities in pangasinan.

Things to do in Pangasinan - Panacalan Island

If you are fascinated by sand bars, there’s one you can visit in Pangasinan.

Panacalan Island has a sandbar that takes a different shape every season, which makes each visit special. It’s near a marine sanctuary where the water is so clear you can see the marine biodiversity and coral reef formations without even getting into the sea.

The island is a 30-minute boat ride away from the jump-off at Tondol Beach in Anda, Pangasinan. Entrance is free but you need to rent a boat starting at P1,500 (~USD 27.65 ) to get there.

Since there are no vendors on the island, you have to bring your own food, water, and equipment, if you want to snorkel and explore the rich marine life around the island.

Address: Barangay Macalaeng, Anda, Pangasinan

Tara Falls

Pangasinan is home to so many waterfalls that it’s hard to choose the best one. Among them is Tara Falls in Bolinao, which is surrounded by greenery and drops to a beautiful blue-green lake.

Expect to hike since most of these as they are not directly accessible via vehicles. This means there are also no nearby food spots so you would have to bring your own food. Enjoy an adventurous picnic surrounded by nature and the calming sounds of the waterfalls.

Entrance to most waterfalls is free but others may charge a minimal environmental fee.

It’s best to visit waterfalls when it’s slightly rainy, so time your waterfall adventures well.

Lingayen Baywalk

If you want free yet convenient beach access and a variety of dining options, go to Lingayen Bay Walk at the provincial capitol.

Anyone can access the wide beach stretch and enjoy a view of the Lingayen Gulf for free. There are resorts around the area but there are also free-to-use cottages shaded by coconut trees not too far away from the beach.

Get to know Pangasinan through its food during your trip, too. Some of the iconic delicacies from the province are tupig , puto Calasiao, and pigar-pigar .

Tupig and puto Calasiao are both rice cakes but are very different. Tupig is sticky rice with coconut shavings wrapped in banana leaves which are then grilled. You can find these being sold around Our Lady of Manaoag Church.

Puto Calasiao

Meanwhile, puto Calasiao uses glutinous rice flour and is steamed. You can get this at most markets in the province, but they originate from the municipality of Calasiao.

Pigar-pigar

If you want to try a local ulam , try pigar-pigar , a peppery stir-fried beef, liver, and cabbage dish which you can order at most eateries.

Things to do in Pangasinan - Bangus Festival

Pangasinan is known for its abundance of bangus , or milkfish – so much that they celebrate it every year in April.

During Bangus Festival , the province holds a variety of concerts and a street dance parade with colorful bangus -inspired costumes.  There are also beach activities and water sports such as beach volleyball and windsurfing.

Bangus Festival

Of course, there are cooking events during this famous fish festival. These include the longest milkfish grill where they cook thousands of bangus for locals and tourists to enjoy for free.

Things to do in Pangasinan - Balungao Hilltop Adventure

For those who like a good mix of adventure and relaxation during their holiday, check out Balungao Hilltop Adventure .

The resort offers many exciting things to do such as cable biking, ATV rides, hiking, and ziplining different cable lengths, depending on how much adrenaline rush you want to get.

Balungao Hilltop Adventure

The entrance fee to the resort costs P50 (~USD 0.92 ) , inclusive of hot and cold spring access from a now-dormant volcano. If you’re coming with a group, cottage rental starts at P400 (~USD 7.37 ) . Each activity also costs an extra fee.

Sungayan Grill Bolinao

They serve grilled fish, boiled shrimp and crabs, calamares (calamari), ensaladang talong (eggplant salad), and the staple summer vacation ulam – grilled liempo  (pork belly).

Set meals start at P900 (~USD 16.59 ) with an extra charge if you want to take the river cruise depending on how many people are in your group.

If you want to dine here, try to go before or after peak hours to avoid the crowd.

Address: Barangay Balingasay, Bolinao, Pangasinan Opening hours: 9am-8pm, Daily Contact: 0977 853 7586 Sungayan Grill’s Facebook | Instagram

Things to do in Pangasinan - Hundred Islands

Couple Kayaking by the Hundred Islands, Pangasinan

If you’re looking for beaches near Manila , the Philippine capital, you should definitely consider the province of Pangasinan. The third-largest province in the Philippines is located roughly 160km north of Manila and is around a two- to three-hour drive away from the capital, making it a popular destination for weekend trips.

Pangasinan is home to many natural wonders, including caves, waterfalls, mountains, hills, and, of course, its famous white sand beaches. The province’s coast is not only an attraction but also a source of livelihood for those who farm salt from its rich salt beds.

Built by Filipino, American, and British engineers in 1905, Cape Bolinao Lighthouse is one of the five major lighthouses in the Philippines and is the second-highest of these five, bested only by Ilocos Norte’s Cape Bojeador Lighthouse. Standing atop Punta Piedra Point in Barangay Patar in Bolinao, it guided ships cruising in the West Philippine Sea, until its batteries gave out in 2004.

The lighthouse may not be working anymore, but it still attracts many visitors to join a Cape Bolinao lighthouse tour , thanks to its unique architecture and the picturesque views that it offers, making it a perfect spot for picture-taking.

The illumination room and the 140-step spiral staircase may be closed to visitors, but with the lighthouse sitting atop a hill with a 72-m elevation, even just standing at the base gives you scenic views of lush greenery and the sparkling ocean. It’s no wonder that this over-a-century old lighthouse has become one of Bolinao’s most enduring and instantly recognizable icons.

11. Our Farm Republic

If you want to learn more about farming and experience what it’s really like to grow and harvest your own produce, visit Our Farm Republic in Barangay Torre II, Mangatarem. The 5.8-ha organic farm is actually both a tourist attraction and training center. While they offer courses and seminars for both new and experienced farmers, there are also several activities for you to try here.

You can go on farm tours, harvest produce to take home, and even learn farm-to-table best practices by picking the ingredients and cooking the food yourself in a Pangasinan culinary tour . They offer a variety of dishes including kalabasa (pumpkin) soup, flower salad (which uses edible organic fresh flowers), tinolang manok (chicken and ginger soup), native pork lechon (roasted suckling pig), and desserts including turonopig, a cross between turon (fried banana rolls) and tupig (roasted rice cake wrapped in banana leaves). Vegetarian options are also available if you’re on a plant-based diet.

You can also take home bottled preserves of different fruits and vegetables, as well as dragonfruit, wild cherries, and java plum wine from the farm’s own winery, Santiago Vino Santo. If you want to stay longer, you may opt to stay at Our Farm Republic’s bed and breakfast and wake up the next day with a freshly prepared hearty breakfast and the sounds of nature.

Sunflowers at the Tayug Sunflower Eco Camp

Photo by Tayug Sunflower Eco Park

Located in Barangay C. Lichauco in Tayug, the Tayug Sunflower Eco Park is a haven for those who can’t get enough of flowers. Like its name suggests, the park is home to thousands of flowers, but they’re not all sunflowers. Here, you can also find beds of marigold, petunia, and celosia, as well as other ornamental plants. There are also different kinds of vegetables in the park, which you can pick and harvest on your own for a fee.

The main attraction in this park are the sunflowers, which make for amazing photos. The 2-ha park is home to thousands of sunflower blooms and several sunflower mazes, which feature several photo stops, so you won’t have to wait too long to get your turn to snap those pictures.

Best of all, the sunflowers are continuously planted throughout the year, so you can be sure that there will be blooms no matter when you visit. You can even take part of the experience home with you as the eco-park also sells potted and bloomed flowers, including zinnias, torenia, and of course, sunflowers.

Balingasay River in Bolinao is considered the cleanest river in Pangasinan and one of the cleanest in the Philippines. It is a protected area that is home to 15ha of mangroves, some of which are over a century old. The Bolinao local government was given the Philippines Wetlands Conservation award for protecting the mangroves in the river.

You can swim, bird watch, or even try fishing in the river, but one of the most relaxing ways to take it all in is through a river cruise. The cruise is usually a part of Pangasinan tour packages, but visitors who like moving at their own pace can book it on its own. The river cruise usually lasts for about an hour and comes with lunch, so you can completely chill and fill yourself up while taking in the fresh air and the relaxing views of mangroves, fish, and birds. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a monkey near the river banks!

Bolina Falls in Pangasinan

Bolinao Falls is made up of three waterfalls—Bolinao Falls 1, 2, and 3. But don’t let the names fool you—they may not sound spectacular, but they’re actually some of the top Pangasinan tourist spots. Along with Patar Beach, the three falls located in Barangay Samang Norte along Bolinao River are the most visited places in Bolinao. While the falls are accessible via car and don’t require much walking, the roads going there can be rough, so be prepared for a bumpy ride.

All three falls are breathtaking, but they have varying heights, and the tallest is Bolinao Falls 1. Coupled with its turquoise waters, the falls’ elevation makes it the ideal spot for cliff-diving. Bolinao Falls 2 is more suited for swimming and has a pool with varying depths, including shallow spots for children.

Tourists also spend more time here when joining a Bolinao Falls tour , as there are cottages that visitors can rent and spend the day at. The last waterfall, Bolinao Falls 3, usually has fewer people, so it’s perfect if you’re seeking a more peaceful experience.

Aerial view of Lingayen Beach

Lingayen Beach is most known as the spot where American General Douglas MacArthur landed in 1945 during World War II. It is also famous for its powdery sands, refreshing waters, and overall chill vibe.

Located in the municipality of Lingayen, the capital of the province, this Pangasinan beach is a popular summer destination for Filipinos seeking to relax, unwind, swim, and take in the cool breeze from the ocean. Many restaurants along the beach also serve freshly grilled seafood. It’s also the best place for you to sample Lingayen bagoong, a fish paste that the municipality is known for.

Adrenaline junkies will also enjoy their time at Lingayen Beach, as you can take an all-terrain vehicle drive along the shore during weekends. You can stay at the many resorts along the beach, or if you want to rough it, you can pitch your tent on the camping grounds.

Tondol White Sand Beach in the municipality of Anda has been nicknamed “The Little Boracay of the North,” and this monicker has made it one of the most visited beaches near Manila. Like Boracay, one of the top beach destinations in the Philippines, Tondol has long stretches of fine white sand and clear blue waters.

The beach is perfect for families with children, as the shallow parts of the waters stretch out far from the shore. In fact, the waters here are shallow enough that you can walk to the nearby islets, and during low tide, several sandbars will appear.

If you want a more fun experience, you can time your visit when the inflatable water park is set up in the shallow waters of the beach so you can try the slides, tunnels, and other obstacles that it offers.

Tourists on a day trip can rent cottages along the shore, but if you want to stay longer, you can book accommodations at one of the many resorts and bed and breakfasts near the shore.

5. Enchanted Cave

Guest swim in a natural pool inside the Enchanted Cave

The Enchanted Cave in Bolinao is a good place to cool off if you’re visiting Pangasinan during the summer months. Inside is a pool of clear natural freshwater with an estimated maximum depth of 6ft, making it ideal for a refreshing swim. It is located in a park near Patar Beach.

It is deemed enchanted because locals believe that millions of years ago, Bolinao was actually underwater. This belief is supported by the presence of coral rocks and fossilized clams in the municipality, many of which you’ll see on your way to the entrance to the cave. The fact that the Enchanted Cave in Bolinao is made of coral limestone also supports this theory. This history makes the cave one-of-a-kind and is one of the reasons why it has become a favorite stop amongst tourists.

Outside the cave, you can also swim in an outdoor pool or enjoy the mini waterfalls inside the park. Those who want to extend their stay can rent cabanas in the park.

Less than 1km away from the Enchanted Cave is Patar Beach, one of the most popular beaches in Bolinao and the whole of Pangasinan. Like many beaches near Manila, this beach is popular for those seeking a quick break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Patar Beach in particular is famous for its long stretch of golden sands and clear blue waters that make for a refreshing swim. If you’re a fan of sunsets, Patar Beach will not disappoint as its location just facing the West Philippine Sea gives it amazing sunset views.

For a day trip, you can rent any of the huts dotted along the beach, but there are also a handful of resorts nearby if you wish to stay longer. You may also camp at the beach and use the public toilets and showers for a fee.

Visitors may also visit the nearby Patar Rock Formation, which will give you breathtaking views of the huge coral cliffs along the coastline.

Coastline of Cabongaoan Beach in Pangasinan

Cabongaoan Beach is located in the town of Burgos. The trip to the remote beach is not easy and can take up to an hour from the town proper, but once you see its stretch of white sand beach and blue waters, you’ll instantly know that it was worth it.

There are not a lot of accommodations in the vicinity, so it would be best if you plan your trip as early as possible. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also bring a tent and camp at the beach.

In recent years, the beach has become popular among tourists thanks to its Death Pool, a natural pool that requires quite a bit of effort to reach. You’ll need to wear proper footwear as you will have to traverse and climb rock formations with sharp edges. Despite its name, though, the Death Pool is not really dangerous.

Many tourists actually enjoy taking a refreshing dip at the pool. You need to be careful as some of the edges of the pool can be sharp. Its original name was Depth Pool, but some locals started calling it Death Pool, and the intriguing name caught on.

2. Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag

Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag

Photo by Our Lady of Manaoag

Pictures of the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag don’t do it justice at all. You might think it’s just like many of the grand churches you can find all over the Philippines, but one of the things that makes this church in Manaoag special is its declaration as a Minor Basilica in 2015. This recognizes the church’s history and architectural value. It is also a canonical affiliate of the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome.

Built in 1605, the church has seen millions of devotees and thousands of religious folk still make a pilgrimage to Manaoag every year, especially during the Holy Week. The image of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag, which many Catholics believe to be miraculous, can also be found here. It's also one of the stops when you join a Pangasinan pilgrimage tour .

You don’t need to be religious to appreciate the beauty of the building and the surrounding areas. The church itself is located on top of a hill, and its facade is very picturesque, while the interior features interesting religious paintings.

1. Hundred Islands National Park

Aerial view of the Hundred Islands in Pangasinan

The Pangasinan Hundred Island National Park in Alaminos is the top Pangasinan destination for locals and international travelers alike. The protected area boasts of 123 islets scattered across Lingayen Gulf. Each islet is uniquely shaped and believed to have been formed millions of years ago, making the view of them even more special and rare. Some of the islands have white sand beaches, while some feature limestone cliffs.

  • Book a  Hundred Islands Pangasinan day tour

Governor’s Island is home to a cave you can explore, as well as a viewing deck. As its name suggests, Children’s Island is kid-friendly, with its shallow waters and a calm beach.

If you have enough time, you may also visit the other islands that are open to tourists: Clave Island, Lopez Island, Marcos Island, Monkey Island, Bat Island, and Old Scout Island. You can also try jet-skiing, island-to-island ziplining, helmet-diving, and going on a banana boat ride. 1. Hundred Islands

travel brochure pangasinan tagalog

You can never go wrong when you visit the first National Park in the Philippines. The Hundred Islands in the gulf of Alaminos, Pangasinan, features more than a hundred unique islands and islets.

Its famous islands are Quezon Island, Marcos Island, Governor’s Island, and Children’s Island, all of which have undergone tourism development.

While Island hopping is the most common activity, you can also choose to include some water activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, and canoeing.

If you have plenty of time, you may want to choose the all-island tour package, so you get to appreciate the local’s way of preserving their natural wonder.

Apart from lingering on the islands’ shores, you can also try climbing some islets and exploring its peak. Some of which offer a magnificent view of the surrounding Hundred Islands and turquoise seawater.

Start an early morning tour when the sun rises enough to balance the morning sun’s rays and cold waters. Make sure to wear appropriate gear and foot protection, especially when planning to climb some islands.

The Hundred Islands in Alaminos is an hour away from the provincial capital of Lingayen.

Visiting this famous Pangasinan tourist spot is indeed a must-list to every traveler’s bucket list when visiting the province.

Stretching from the west coast of Bolinao lies the pristine shorelines in Patar, some 30 minutes away from its town center.

The inviting mixture of fine white and golden sands highlights this Pangasinan tourist spot, which every visitor is sure to enjoy.

Swim all you want, and pose for the gram while enjoying the perfect combination of sun, sea, and sand. Keep an eye though for some rock formations underwater, and it is advisable to wear swimming shoes.

If you are with your significant other, try to impress her with a sunset dinner date. The golden skyline is pretty enough to end the whole day touring the beach.

3. Enchanted Cave

Apart from the beaches in Bolinao, there also lies a distinctive cave they call Enchanted Cave .

This cave lies inside a park-like haven surrounded by lush greens and shades.

Your tour starts with a short hike, accompanied by a local guide. Upon reaching the entrance, you’ll have to descend on a steep stair. Then, you’ll notice some stalactites and stalagmites afterward.

True to its name, inside the cave is a naturally formed pool with crystal-clear waters. A large opening above the pool keeps enough lighting for a dramatic ambiance.

The water here is deep at 8 feet, and protective gear like a vest and helmet are mandatory, including their rates.

Outdoor pools are available too. Hammocks under trees are also available if you want to have a relaxing moment after swimming and sightseeing.

4. Bolinao Falls 1,2 & 3

If you are up for an off-the-beaten adventure in Bolinao, you may want to try visiting this Pangasinan tourist spot.

Travel time from the town proper takes around 30 minutes. Number names these waterfalls mainly because of their proximity to each other.

The Bolinao Falls 1 features a cliff diving spot suitable even for amateurs. Its basin is relatively small, though, as the crowd can quickly fill the site during the weekend or holidays.

The Bolinao Falls 2 , on the other hand, has shallow rock pools. Despite the missing cliffs and high water drops, the wide basin still holds a charming ambiance perfect for swimming, especially when traveling with kids. You can also try bamboo rafting and pose for that mandatory selfie.

Lastly, the Bolinao Falls 3 collectively attributes to the first two falls. It has a cliff spot but not as high as that of the first waterfall. However, Bolinao Falls 3 has the most expansive basin. Your group will enjoy swimming as it has multiple varied drops of water.

All in all, the refreshing turquoise water at these three waterfalls is worth visiting during the summer months.

5. Cape Bolinao Lighthouse

travel brochure pangasinan tagalog

For a quick visit, Cape Bolinao is a historical tourist spot worth dropping by.

Built during the American occupation, the Cape Bolinao Lighthouse stands the test of time as serving for over a century.

The ruins complement the overall classical ambiance of the lighthouse. Thanks to its well-maintained surrounding, the place is a perfect spot to do some photoshoots.

The Sunflower Maze is part of a complex farm that is owned and managed by Allied Botanical Corporation. A wide range of flowering plants and crops is also grown here and available for viewing.

10. Death Pool

Although its name sounds horrifying, the Death Pool is just a natural pool made from rocks filled by tides whenever it comes in.

This Pangasinan tourist spot lies in Cabaoangan Beach in Burgos, less than two hours if you come from Lingayen.

For a complete experience, make sure to visit early in the morning when the tide is low. Lower tide graciously shows how water fills these natural pools.

Keep in mind to wear sole protection as rocks may be rough and slippery. While you can camp near the shoreline, there are also available lodging houses nearby if you plan to stay for a night or two.

11. Balungao Hilltop Adventure Resort

Spend a whole day full of fun and adventure at Balungao Hilltop Adventure Resort in Balungao, Pangasinan.

They also have rooms for rent and function halls to cater to events and special occasions.

12. Sky Plaza

If you are traveling near Natividad in Pangasinan, you can visit the Sky Plaza in Barangay Bachelor East.

This local destination is a famous pilgrimage site during the Holy Week. At the top of the hill rests a 40-foot statue of Christ the Redeemer, Brazil’s renowned sculpture replica.

You can hike early in the morning for a cooler temperature or during the late afternoon.

Your hike starts at the hill’s base, where you can see a two-story octagon-shaped multipurpose hall and a chapel. Next, you’ll have to pass by a 287-step concrete staircase leading to the cavern of the Virgin Mary.

As you progress, you can also spot a 30-foot Holy Cross. From here, a path leading to the top reaches the statue.

The park also includes a zipline for a minimal fee, stretching a span of 120 meters.

Tourists can also visit the nearby Maranum Falls, some 2-km away from the park.

The long stretch of fine white sand highlights Tondol Beach. During low tides, water is just ankle-deep. With the low water level, you can spend some time playing beach volleyball and the like.

Tondol Beach is also a kid-friendly destination so that you can bring with you your little ones.

Starfishes are visible along the coastline; however, picking these gentle little creatures is prohibited.

Colibra Island is a Pangasinan tourist spot to visit when you want to explore sandy beach on a lone island

Off the coast of Dasol in Pangasinan lies a tiny island which they call Snake or Colibra Island . It takes about 20 minutes boat ride from Tambobong Beach.

With its size, anyone can tour the entire island in as fast as 30 minutes or less. While the island sounds straightforward, its coastline boasts crystal-clear waters covering the fine white sands and overlooking the turquoise water from afar.

You can snorkel in the frontal part of the island since the waves here are calm. Likewise, there are beautiful corals and a variety of schools of fish you can swim along.

On the contrary, the waves at its southern part are pretty strong. It is best to practice safety before conquering the waves since the island is in a remote place.

Don’t forget to bring lots of heat protection like shades, tents, and sunblocks, as it could be burning when the sun is up. Drinking water is also your friend here.

Remember to bring your provisions and leave no trace as you depart this secluded Pangasinan tourist spot if you plan to stay the night.

BOLINAO PANGASINAN TRAVEL GUIDE 2024

It was my first time to visit Pangasinan and the first town I’ve set my feet upon is Bolinao. I have always loved long drives and the trip to Bolinao is then one of those. The long drive, particularly the entrance to the town fascinated me big time because of the natural landscape and the green rolling hills and plains at the sight although afar. I was even more amazed when I learned about the historical side of it apart from seeing how stunning it truly was.

travel brochure pangasinan tagalog

About Bolinao Pangasinan

Pangasinan is situated at the northern west coast of the archipelago facing the West Philippine Sea. It’s beauty and treasures have been always known to everyone because it is famous for being the home of  the most renowned, Hundred Islands. In the past years, though, tourism in the province has flourished because it is not only the ones in Alaminos which has become a must-see for every tourist. There goes the gems of Bolinao – the farthest corner of Pangasinan: the home of caves, beaches, old and historical church, lighthouse, rivers, green rolling hills and waterfalls.

How to Get There

First, ride a bus in Cubao or Pasay bound for Bolinao. You can choose among Solid North or Five Star Bus Liners. Buses leave every hour for Bolinao, though. Take note that it is always better to depart early so you could spend more time exploring the place. Ideal time of departure from the city is at 2 or 3 in the morning. It is a six-hour drive from Manila. Fare ranges from Php 500.oo to Php 600.00 depending on the type of bus you’d hop into. Then, alight at Bolinao town proper. From there, you can hire tricycles that could bring you to your desired destinations. (See suggested itinerary below).

What to Visit in Bolinao Pangasinan

Bolinao church.

travel brochure pangasinan tagalog

Bolinao Church or St. James Parish Church is one of the oldest churches in the country located at the town proper of Bolinao particularly at Brgy. Germinal. It is quite an edifice made out of black coral stones built circa 1608 and stood still against ravaging storms and earth shaking natural catastrophe since then. It was  said that this church still has the original materials amazingly intact. I’ve heard and read so much interesting historical stuff about this historical heritage. Some of which include the church being the host of the first mass in the Philippines in 1324. Imagine? That’s more or less 200 years before Magellan came here!

travel brochure pangasinan tagalog

It was also noted in the history that a Thanksgiving Mass was also held in the same church led by the missionaries and an Italian priest, Odorico, in 1324.     It is just a few meters from the bus terminals; hence, could be visited as soon as tourists set foot into the town.

Patar Beach

Sink your feet and walk on the golden grainy sand; listen to, catch the waves of and swim at the pristine waters of the South China Sea. Let these be your haven and feel the serenity of the place as you watch the sunset turn everything around you golden and the sea breeze becomes colder. This is what Patar beach would offer you.

travel brochure pangasinan tagalog

I walked around at 6:00 in the morning after taking a time lapse of the sunshine and my feet brought me here. Quite instagrammable!

travel brochure pangasinan tagalog

Situated at the outskirts of Bolinao, Brgy. Patar is known to be the home of such a glorious beach which is most of the time less crowded despite its publicity. To get to this place from Brgy. Germinal or the town proper, one has to ride a tricycle straight to Brgy. Patar. Usually, people wait on other passengers so the fare could at least be cheap. Fare ranges from 300-500 pesos to and from (two-way) Patar Beach depending on the haggling skills of the tourist.

Bolinao Falls

Is chasing waterfalls also your thing? Say no more! Apart from beaches, Bolinao is also a home of a falls or two. Surprising quite indeed that falls exist in a low lying plains at this side of the north. It was said that this falls is a result of the flowing waters from the rivers of the elevated lands going to the Balingasay river down to a height with a natural wide basin below; hence, Bolinao falls.

travel brochure pangasinan tagalog

For only Php 50.00 for each falls (hence a hundred bucks for two) and half an hour trek, you can enjoy these and even jump from a height to the cold, calm waters below. There are also cottages several steps from the falls perhaps so as not to get the river and falls itself too crowded and murky. There are bamboo stairs though for going to and from the falls.

Rock Formation of Bolinao Pangasinan

travel brochure pangasinan tagalog

Located exactly at Patar Rock Beach Resort, this showcases a natural rock formation similar to that of the ones in Snake or Dapa Island in Burias, Masbate formed by the ceaseless lapping of the waves to the shore. If you want a panoramic and scenic view and shot (well, for you prenuptial photos, too), this is one of the best spots!

Where to Stay

There’s a lot that you can choose from. There are budget-friendly room rates and home stays and also hotels and resorts. It is advisable that you contact them prior to your visit. You can check some at AirBnB, TravelBook.ph and booking.com. Rate starts at Php 1,000.00 for simple nipa rooms. Polly’s and Kuya Benjie’s room and kubo for rent are among these cheap accommodations. Fine ones include Costa Fuego, Casa Almanrezo Bed and Breakfast, Sundowners Vacation Villas and others.

You could also choose Patar Rock Beach Resort  as for your accommodation. Rate starts at Php 1,000.00 for 2-3 pax in fan/ kubo type of rooms. They also offer tours to the tourist destinations in Bolinao for Php 1,500.00. Below are their contact details just in case you need more information and if you want to make reservations for your stay. Location: Patar Road, Patar, Bolinao Pangasinan Business Hours: Open from Monday to Sunday Mobile: 0919.896.6907 / 099.880.54878 Email:  [email protected] Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/rockviewbeach/ Official Website:  http://www.ilovepangasinan.com/rock-view-beach-rock-formation/

Caves of Bolinao Pangasinan

travel brochure pangasinan tagalog

There are actually three caves that you can visit in the town and these include Cindy’s Cave, Wonderful cave and  Enchanted cave with the last being the most ‘enchanting’ and mystical. The last features lime stones, fossils and crystal clear cold waters which have been seated there for what has been believed to be millions of years already.

Each cave, though, has a corresponding entrance fee. 100 pesos for Cindy’s, 100 for Wonderful and 150 for Enchanted cave. These fees are not included yet in the tour offered by the local tricycle drivers.

16th Century Cape Bolinao Lighthouse

travel brochure pangasinan tagalog

Considered as the second tallest in the Philippines, this 100-feet lighthouse can be reached just an uphill past your drive from Patar Beach. Tourists never miss an opportunity in visiting this cultural heritage. Unfortunately, going up the towering architecture is strictly prohibited. Make sure that you explore the area, walk around and find instagram-worthy backgrounds in there. At the entrance is a small souvenir shop. Also, get a taste of their local delicacy – sticky rice cooked inside a bamboo tube partnered with a sweet brown sauce. It costs a hundred bucks for four tubes for the small ones and three for one hundred for the medium ones.

Suggested Itinerary

Going to a place of course requires research and itinerary for you to make the best out of your trip  by exploring what other treasures your destination has to offer. With that, here’s a suggested itinerary should you decide to go to Bolinao: DAY 1 2:00am – ETD bus terminal 7:00am – ETA Bolinao Town proper 7:00am – 7:45am – breakfast (7-11, carinderia, Tapa King); shopping for essentials 7:45am – 8:00am – Bolinao Church/ St. James Parish Church 8:00am – 8:10am – Meet up with tricycle driver, tour arrangements 8:10am – 8:30am/8:40am – ETD/ETA to Patar Beach 8:40am – 9:00 am – Check in 9:00am – 4:00pm –  Bolinao Falls/ lunch/ Rock Formation Tour 4:00pm – Back to Patar Beach 4:00pm onwards – Beach bumming, sunset watching, dinner, socials 10:00pm – star gazing/ lights off

These local drivers offer tour which rate starts at Php 1,200.00 pesos to all of the must-see destinations. But I guess you make arrangements as regards this one.

Okay, I must admit this is better. ^_^ I got confused with where to set a starting point in Samar after I read your last two post. Thanks for such as detailed info.

travel brochure pangasinan tagalog

@Joel - that's why this is just a "SAMAR Travel Guide"... I've never been to Guiuan kaya hindi cya kasama dito... Nag side trip lang ako sa Balangiga... I'll create an Eastern Samar Travel Guide pag nakapunta na ako dun... Thanks!

@Glen - thanks for appreciating... hope it would help you when to plan a visit to Samar.. ^_^

I wish I could. ^_^ I'll be having my first vacation from work on October 2012. I'm looking forward to visiting Palawan and I've had downloaded quite a handful of reviews from other Pinoy Travel Bloggers. Do you happen to have posts about Palawan? Thanks. ^_^

@Glen - wo! great choice! I've only been to Coron... Check this out --- http://www.pinoyadventurista.com/search/label/Palawan

Great! Thanks for the link. ^_^

Cool! When in Eastern Samar, do visit the lowly but beautiful town of Sulat (lots of old houses lined up, para ka lang nasa Vigan), the surprisingly vibrant city of Borongan, and Calicoan Island in Guiuan: nice beaches, good diving site. I hope very soon maging operational na ang commercial flights to Guiuan because they have a nice charter airport which used to be a classified airport by the US during the war. And of course the gem that is Guiuan Church...the most beautiful church I've seen in Visayas. :)

I really appreciate this post.It is very informative. :D

ganda po ng mga pics, anyways ask ko lang kung magkano aabutin ang fare mula manila at kung ano ang marecommend mo na means of travel from manila. maraming salamat. DirectionsOnWeb.blogspot.com

@Elal - Thanks a lot... hope it could help you plan your next trip! ^_^ @Aleah - salamat po... ay ganun? sana nga next time magkaroon ka na ng time for some R&R... nice din kc ang beaches sa Samar especially sa Marabut... :)

Ikaw na talaga ang itinerary expert Mervs! this is very detailed! :)

Nice opener for the province of Samar... See Guian as well, Calicoan Island is a hidden paradise there. I've never been there but base from the magazines it is a worthy to discover that hidden of Eastern Samar.

travel brochure pangasinan tagalog

I am from Borongan but I am ashamed to admit na di ko pa nalibot ang lalawigan na aking pinagmulan. Magagamit ko itong itinerary kung sakaling makauwi ako ngayong taon. :)

hi Pinoy Adventurista, Just asking where did you stay in tacloban city? we'll be in taht city by sun, feb 12, 2012. thanks!

I stayed at GV hotel Tacloban

Just booked a flight here for october! balak ko sana mag biri kaso sabi maalon daw sa ganung panahon? hanap ako ng backup dito sa blog mo mervz :)

Hi Pinoy Adventurista! My family is from Samar (Western Samar) and I've spent all the summers of my youth visiting this enchanted province. I know how to speak Waray and really, Samar is the home of my soul. But I'm ashamed to say that I haven't even visited some of the destinations in your post. While I've been to Northern Samar and Samar, I haven't even set foot on Eastern Samar (that's my goal for 2013!) Biri is an awesome place--went there August 2011 and it's simply awe-inspiring :) Thank you for your posts, which simply make me homesick. Must visit the hometown soon :)

travel brochure pangasinan tagalog

Im from Samar too and been around these sites as well. Tourism is slowly popping now in the province thanks to some individuals leading the way like the pioneers of extreme caving. Samar has also some notable falls to be proud of. Usually when I take friends to tour Samar, I suggest to start from Northern Samar (there's a direct flight from Manila to Catarman) and visit Biri from there. Then the same route as this. Although I haven't been around much in Eastern Samar, it's on the check list with Calicoan Island in Guiuan on top.

HI Pinoy Adventurista! I just wanna ask, how much is the fee if you'll get a local tour guide 'round Eastern Samar?

naku, di po ako sure kung how much, di ko pa kasi na-try... madali lang po mag ikot sa samar, maganda po ang transportation system nila dyan, so i think di na kailangan ng guide... :)
