Two Worlds Walkthrough

Welcome to Antaloor. This is a vast land, with much to see. While Two Worlds is all about open-ended exploration, your tasks will be very small at first. There are certain side-quests that we recommend completing early on, as they will make your travels much easier. However, we recommend being vigilant about completing this initial leg of the journey. It's simple and linear, but after you're past it, the whole world will open up to you, and then the real fun begins.

Also, remember, many of the goals have multiple solutions. At times we will try to indicate several of these to you, but other times, we will simply indicate the easiest path. Don't let this discourage you from finding your own path. We're here to guide you, but strike out on your own when you feel confident enough to do so.

Your Journey Begins After the very brief mission, "Into the Darkness," you'll find yourself just outside of Koromin Village. A man named Tago is up ahead, and he tells you that someone is waiting for you in the village. This is Gandohar, and he will be one of your main contacts in your journey. Speak with him and he will tell you that you need to speak with his leader, Reist Tungard.

2Worlds002.jpg

While you're in the village, find the teleport and speak to the man standing by it. He will give you an item that will allow you to activate any new teleports you find and use them whenever you wish. It's a handy means of travel, so don't neglect to do this, even though it isn't part of your main quest.

Reist is in Goat's Cave. It's to the east, and should be marked on your map. Reist will explain what he wants from you in exchange for your sister's safety. When he leaves, go outside. Gandohar will be waiting by the campfire. Speak with him, and he will tell you to find one of the "nodes" nearby, which will allow you to speak with your sister.

2Worlds006.jpg

The node is in a valley nearby. You'll know when you're in the right area because your screen will turn a bluish hue. When you've found the right spot, Kira will suddenly appear. She will tell you some of your family's history before she bids you part. Now, return to Gandohar, who is still at the camp. He will reveal their true intentions, and refer you to Reist, who will be waiting in the cave again.

When you finish with Reist, you will need to talk to Gandohar one more time. He will tell you your main quest: to recover the five pieces of the relic that is your family's heritage. He asks that you consult a man named Ho for further details.

2Worlds013.jpg

Ho's house is to the south. Even he seems a bit fuzzy on some of the details, but he will give you all the leads you need to complete your quest. We'll begin with the Scepter.

Journey Between Two Worlds

“He had to rub it in that now I was considered a stateless person and no longer had any rights."

“Wow, did he hate those war brides, those whores.”

“I heard over the radio on September 1, 1939 that our troops had marched into Poland. "

“It was so shocking to me. At that moment it hit me that life as we had known it was undergoing a radical change and would never be the same again.”

“My most overwhelming impression was steaming by the Statue of Liberty. I was crying. "

“Mere words could not describe my emotions. She welcomed me, this bundle of misery that came from the country Hitler had just trashed.”

Exploring the Depths of Journey’s Timeless Classic

Diving into journey’s enduring anthem “separate ways (worlds apart)”: a testament to the band’s undeniable talent and timeless impact on rock music..

two worlds journey

When you think of iconic anthems from the ’80s, Journey’s “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” is undoubtedly one that comes to mind. Released in 1983 on their album Frontiers, this powerful rock ballad remains an enduring testament to the incredible talent and versatility of the band .

Journey, formed in 1973 in San Francisco, initially started as a progressive rock band but found their niche in the world of arena rock. The band’s lineup has seen several changes over the years, with notable members including renowned keyboardist Gregg Rolie, virtuoso guitarist Neal Schon, and, of course, the unforgettable voice of Steve Perry. It was the addition of Perry in 1977 that helped propel them to superstardom, with his incomparably emotive range and distinct vocal tone. While Perry has been absent from the band in recent years, his legacy remains a crucial part of what makes Journey so iconic.

“Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” showcases the band’s incredible musicianship and their ability to create memorable melodies, powerful riffs, and heart-wrenching lyrics. Perry’s vocals shine in this song, telling the tale of a couple in the middle of a breakup, with a performance that pierces the soul. The combination of Schon’s soaring guitar and Jonathan Cain’s skillful keyboard work add to the emotional depth of the track, making it a timeless classic. The music video, however, has been criticized for its awkward air instrument performances, which in hindsight, could be considered somewhat endearing in the context of the era’s cheesy music videos.

Journey has received numerous accolades and awards, such as the prestigious Diamond certification for their 1981 album, Escape, and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. They have sold over 75 million albums worldwide, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. Throughout their career, Journey has continued to captivate audiences with their incredible live performances, their ability to create unforgettable anthems like “Don’t Stop Believin,” “Open Arms,” and, of course, “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart).”

In conclusion, Journey remains an influential and important band in the history of rock music, with “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” being a prime example of their incredible talent both lyrically and musically. Despite the occasional misstep, like a questionable music video choice, Journey has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the hearts of millions of fans worldwide.

Charting the Journey of “Separate Ways”

“separate ways: a rock ballad’s chart odyssey in the 80s music landscape”.

two worlds journey

Released on January 5, 1983, “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” quickly became a fan favorite and demonstrated Journey’s prowess in the realm of rock ballads. The song’s chart journey is an interesting tale, displaying both its successes and the changing landscape of the music industry during the early 80s.

Upon its release, “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” debuted at number 56 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. With its powerful guitar riffs and unforgettable chorus, the song steadily climbed the charts, ultimately reaching its peak position at number 8 just nine weeks later. Journey’s captivating power ballad remained in the top 10 for a total of four weeks, showcasing its staying power and resonating with audiences across the United States.

The song also found success on other charts, such as the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, where it peaked at an impressive number 3. On the international stage, “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” fared well in Canada, peaking at number 12 on the RPM Top Singles chart.

However, not every chart told the same success story for Journey’s classic ballad. In the United Kingdom, “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” struggled to find its footing, reaching only number 84 on the UK Singles Chart. This discrepancy in chart performance highlights the varying tastes and preferences of music listeners around the globe.

Despite the song’s mixed chart performance, “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” has cemented its place in rock history and continues to be a beloved anthem for Journey fans. Its chart journey not only exemplifies the tumultuous nature of the music industry but also serves as a testament to the power of a well-crafted, emotionally resonant song.

Unlocking the Emotional Depth of “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)”

Someday, love will find you Break those chains that bind you One night will remind you How we touched and went our separate ways If he ever hurts you True love won’t desert you You know I still love you Though we touched and went our separate ways

Troubled times Caught between confusions and pain, pain, pain Distant eyes Promises we made were in vain, in vain, vain If you must go, I wish you love You’ll never walk alone Take care, my love Miss you, love

Journey’s “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” features lyrics that dive deep into the emotional experience of love and heartbreak. The song, released in 1983, captures the spirit of the times and resonates with the challenges and uncertainties that marked the early 1980s. With its powerful lyrics and anthemic sound, the song quickly established itself as a rock classic.

The lyrics of “Separate Ways” convey a sense of longing and sadness for a love that has ended but still lingers in the hearts and minds of the individuals involved. The song paints a vivid picture of sleepless nights and the relentlessness of feeling that something is gone. This concept of love as a force that divides yet continues to bind people together, even after they’ve gone their separate ways, reflects the complexities of human emotions and relationships.

The 1980s were a time of change and transition, marked by events such as the Cold War, the rise of technology, and shifting cultural norms. These broader dynamics of the era are echoed in the lyrics’ themes of uncertainty, confusion, and pain. The song’s resolution – that true love will eventually find you and break the chains that bind you – offers a hopeful message amidst the turmoil.

Serving as a testament to the timeless appeal of Journey’s music and lyrics, “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” will continue to resonate with fans and listeners for generations to come.

A Visual Journey: The Making of “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” Music Video

“journey’s iconic first music video, ‘separate ways (worlds apart),’ transports us back to the 80s with its passionate performance, bold fashion, and innovative camera techniques, making it a lasting emblem of rock history.”.

The music video for Journey’s 1983 hit “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” is often heralded as a quintessential representation of the 80s music video era. Directed by Tom Buckholtz, the video showcases the band performing on a wharf with lead singer Steve Perry passionately belting out the lyrics, while the rest of the band mimics playing their instruments with no cords or amplifiers present. The video also features a love interest, played by actress Margaret Olmstead.

Interestingly, “Separate Ways” was Journey’s first music video, making the band relatively new to the concept of visual storytelling . With a modest budget and a simple premise, the video was shot in a single day in New Orleans, Louisiana. The band and crew completed the shoot despite freezing temperatures, adding an icy authenticity to the video’s waterfront setting.

Though not as elaborate as some of its contemporaries, the “Separate Ways” video is memorable for its innovative use of camera movement and angles. Buckholtz employed the “Ricochet Zoom,” a technique that involves moving the camera rapidly in one direction and then immediately zooming in the opposite direction. This effect creates a dynamic and energetic visual experience, perfectly complementing Journey’s powerful rock anthem.

Another notable aspect of the video is its strategic use of slow motion. This effect is used to emphasize important moments, such as when Steve Perry throws a handful of sand into the air or when guitarist Neal Schon leaps off a stack of equipment. These striking visuals have contributed to the video’s lasting impact and continued popularity.

Over the years, “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” has been celebrated and parodied, with fans and other artists creating their own renditions and tributes. The music video has also been hailed as a nostalgic piece of 80s pop culture, with critics praising its bold fashion choices, such as the band’s infamous red leather pants, and its unabashedly dramatic performance style. In the end, the “Separate Ways” video remains an iconic and beloved artifact of Journey’s storied career.

A Deeper Dive into Jonathan Cain’s Genius

Jonathan Cain, the mastermind behind Journey’s iconic hit “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)”, is no stranger to crafting memorable tunes that stand the test of time. As the band’s keyboardist and primary songwriter since 1980, his creative prowess has contributed to numerous Journey classics. Among his many accomplishments, Cain co-wrote the anthemic “Don’t Stop Believin'”, a song that remains a global phenomenon and one of the most downloaded tracks in the digital era. Additionally, Cain’s songwriting credits include other Journey hits like “Faithfully” and “Open Arms”, further solidifying his status as a legendary composer in the music industry. With a talent for creating songs that resonate with listeners across generations, Jonathan Cain’s influence on the rock and roll landscape is truly undeniable.

Awards, Accolades, and Appearances Galore

From billboard charts to glee and tron: legacy, “separate ways (worlds apart)” transcends genres and decades, proving its timeless rock anthem status..

two worlds journey

“Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” has certainly made a mark in the history of rock music since its release in 1983. The song peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, showcasing its wide appeal and success at the time. The song also secured a Gold certification by the RIAA in 2019, proving its lasting impact on the music scene.

Throughout the years, “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” has been featured in various forms of media, solidifying its status as an iconic track. Fans of the hit TV series Glee would remember the exciting performance of the song in the season 5 episode “New New York” where it was powerfully sung by Lea Michele and Adam Lambert.

The song also made its way into the realm of movies, with the memorable inclusion in the 2010 blockbuster “Tron: Legacy,” where it played a pivotal role in setting the tone for one of the film’s most thrilling scenes. Video game enthusiasts would also recall hearing “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” in the action-packed Saints Row IV game as part of its in-game radio station.

As with any timeless classic, “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” has inspired numerous covers and tributes by renowned artists over the years. One of the most notable renditions came from the Swedish pop group A*Teens in 1999, giving the song a fresh, youthful twist. The song has also been covered by In This Moment, an American heavy metal band, as part of their 2010 EP “The Dream – Ultraviolet Edition,” showcasing the versatility of the song across genres.

Overall, “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” continues to leave an indelible mark in the world of music and media. Its enduring appeal, coupled with its successful chart performance and numerous appearances in films, TV shows, and games, only adds to the song’s impressive legacy.

Breaking Down the Musical Elements

Diving into the technical aspects of “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” we find a song that’s skillfully crafted to deliver an anthemic, arena-ready sound. Written in the key of E minor, the song employs a straightforward chord progression, with the verses predominantly using Em, D, and C chords, and the chorus switching to a G, D, Em, and C pattern. This progression creates a sense of urgency and emotion , which perfectly complements the song’s theme of love and heartbreak.

The tempo of “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” sits at a brisk 128 beats per minute, driving the song’s energy and making it an ideal track for both air guitar enthusiasts and those looking to dance their heartbreak away. The band’s skillful use of syncopation and rhythmic variation adds further excitement to the track, with the drums and bass working in tandem to create a solid foundation for the soaring vocals and blistering guitar work.

Instrumentally, the song is built on a foundation of powerful, yet melodic, guitar riffs and solos, punctuated by the unmistakable sound of the synthesizer. The synth intro, played in unison with the guitar, is one of the most iconic elements of the song, and it continues to be a fan favorite to this day. Combined with the tight rhythm section and Steve Perry’s emotive vocal performance, it’s no wonder this song has stood the test of time.

As for the song’s structure, “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” follows a classic verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus format. However, Journey adds their own unique twist with a pre-chorus that builds anticipation for the powerful, sing-along chorus. Additionally, the inclusion of an instrumental break, featuring a blazing guitar solo, showcases the band’s technical prowess and adds further depth to the song.

In conclusion, the technical aspects of “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” contribute significantly to the song’s enduring appeal. From its catchy, anthemic chorus to the masterful musicianship on display, it’s clear that Journey crafted a true classic with this track.

Two Worlds, One Journey

Jan 12, 2018 | native hope.

Each of us has a unique story to tell. Our journeys are colored with varying experiences and upbringings, often shaped and molded by some aspect of our different cultures. For some of us, we have very little knowledge of our ancestry or heritage, while others of us grow up steeped in family history and tradition. For Brian Perry, his story is one of two worlds.

Brian, a friend of Native Hope, is a proud citizen of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma. He is passionate about his Native heritage and his own unique pilgrimage of discovering his ancestral roots. Born in 1963, Brian spent his first thirty years growing up as a white Caucasian male in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas. Although he was aware of being a descendant of Native American ancestry, he states, “During that time in my life, it meant very little to me.” Then on September 9,  1993, a significant event would change his life forever.

brian_perry-388534-edited.jpg

Brian attended the funeral of his full-blooded Chickasaw grandmother. He recalls entering the small Indian Baptist church in Ada, Oklahoma, and being eagerly welcomed by several elderly Native women. As they each embraced him in a warm hug, they exclaimed, “You look just like your great-grandfather.” Brian bluntly states, “I had no clue who they were talking about.”

Brian’s third great-grandfather was Winchester Colbert, a three-term governor of the Chickasaw Nation, who lived from 1810-1880. Brian recalls, “When I first saw his picture in a history book, I got goosebumps. Our resemblance was remarkable.” He remembers pointedly, “This was the moment I began to identify myself as a  Native American.”

winchester_colbert.jpg

Brian began to delve deeper into his ancestor’s history and Native American history . Through his research, he discovered that he had survived the Great Removal, better known as the Trail of Tears. This was the forced removal of the Five Civilized Tribes: Chickasaw, Choctaw, Cherokee, Creek, and Seminole, which resulted in the deaths of over 6,000 people caused by exposure, disease, and starvation.

Connecting to his heritage

Brian began reflecting on what it would have been like to have the government decide one day to round up all the people of a certain race and march them over 1,200 miles—deporting them from their ancestral homelands to a land they had never seen before. As Brian reflected on this appalling event in history, he also found himself inspired by his people's resilient spirit stating, “My ancestors survived this tragic era in American history. And today, we thrive! Thankfully the Chickasaw Nation has prospered.”

Brian’s quest to learn more about the Native American culture that ran in his veins continued to pull at his heart, and he wasn't just interested in understanding his Chickasaw heritage. He shares, “So here I was, a Chickasaw living in Oklahoma, but for some reason I found myself drawn to the Lakota people. On my desk I had cut out and framed pictures of Lakota children. Then one day, out of the blue, I received an offer to come to South Dakota and work with a school that served Lakota children, right in the heart of Indian country.” He continues, “It was as if the Creator gave me a sign, and on August 1, 2010, I made the move to South Dakota.”

When Brian arrived in South Dakota to work with his Lakota Sioux brothers and sisters, he states, “I found a very different world than what I had known with the Chickasaw Nation. I took off my rose-colored glasses and replaced them with rez-colored glasses. The tragedies are real, but the people are resilient and humble. Some live in survival mode daily.”

brian_redsand.jpg

Brian’s story is about one journey merging with two worlds. He shares, “Each day, I have one foot in the 'red world' and one in the 'white.' I applaud those Natives who walk the 'red road.' However, that is not my journey. I am at peace with my white upbringing and my later adaptation to Native culture, values, and understanding.” He continues by sharing, “Culture is not a place. It is a way of life, and since 1993, I have walked to the beat of my own drum—a beat that flows beautifully between two cultures and one destiny.”

Cultures intertwined

Brianandmaintainence2_smaller-096644-edited-767697-edited.jpg

He passionately entreats, “Let us not dwell on yesterday’s injustices and broken treaties, so we can reap the rewards of tomorrow’s dreams and blessings from the Creator. We must replace bitterness with forgiveness. Replace lies with truths. Forgiveness of the past is the pathway to the future. Let us begin a new era in our stormy and storied relations. A new generation where dignity and hope is restored. A time of reconciliation and restoration of dreams. We must be resilient and strong. We must have courage and lead. Most importantly, we must stand united.”

As Brian looks to his future, he is excited to continue pursuing his passion and mission in life: “To empower and inspire Native youth to believe and achieve in their hopes and dreams for a better quality of life, and to bring greater awareness of Native American issues.”

Working together

Brian would like to invite you to join him on his journey to a new beginning for the next generation of leaders in Indian country. He believes that by working together, we can bring hope and change so that future generations—our children, our grandchildren, and our great-grandchildren—will have the opportunities that previous generations did not.

At Native Hope, we believe that hope should be a basic human right—that Native young people deserve to dream about what’s possible, just like every other American. To write the untold story of the future of Native America, it will take all of us. Together, we can restore the dignity and vitality of Native people and their culture.

two worlds journey

Tonight, I was driving home with my wife when it hit me. Tomorrow is six years .

That means the last time I spoke to my father was six years ago tonight. Words were raised in anger and frustration, and while I’ve spent time processing and moving forward, a small part of me will always wish that the final words had been softer. Nicer. Better.

Regardless, this put me in a very introspective and “gushy” mood. You know, I’ve wanted to return to words and blogging and all of that, but I’ve never felt like it was the right time or place. Even now, the writer’s block punches my brain and gut with the force of a million fists. Before you get farther, just know that this is word vomit and gets a bit all over the place.

Back in July 2017, my life took an unexpected turn, and since then, everything has changed. It’s hard to believe how much I have grown and the experiences I have gained since then. It feels like a completely different life altogether.

When my father died, I think I can best describe that as a catalyst or trigger for a quarter life crisis that was raging. I was lost in a bad way, and while I’ve only truly recently discovered some of the truths or answers that would have make things simpler, that doesn’t discount just how much the death spurred me. In the midst of this darkness, seeds of personal growth can be sown and were sown.

I finally wised up and proposed. We’ve been married about four years now, and I couldn’t be happier. In addition to the love and support that my spouse provides, I’m grateful for the little things that make our relationship special. From the inside jokes that only we understand to the shared adventures we embark on, there’s never a dull moment with them by my side. Our home is filled with laughter, warmth, and a deep sense of companionship. Together, we create a harmonious space that nourishes our souls and strengthens our bond. We’ve also learned the art of compromise, understanding that no relationship is perfect but that with love and open communication, we can overcome any obstacle. Our love story is one of growth, resilience, and unwavering commitment. I wouldn’t have figured this out either without the wake up call almost six years ago.

I changed careers and truly stuck to it. The decision I made in the months before his death ended up being for the best, and while there are some rough days, growing from loss is a transformative journey that tests one’s resilience and inner strength. I show that in my career, as I fought for every single chance I had and have.

I remember that I went on a long road trip in the year directly after the events of July 2017. I couldn’t be there a year later. I made it though. Every step I take, every lesson I learn, I can’t help but wonder if you would be proud. The choices I make, the challenges I face – they are all influenced by the hope of earning your approval. It’s a constant drive to prove myself, to show the world that I am capable of great things. Even though you may not be here to witness my accomplishments, I carry your memory with me, finding strength in the belief that you are watching over me. So, with each milestone achieved, I silently ask myself, ‘Would you be proud, Dad?’ And in that moment, I feel a sense of pride knowing that I’ve done my best to honor your legacy.

I know that In The Heights has nothing to do with my story or struggle, but I really can’t help but think of my father during Paciencia y Fe.

“And ay Mamá, what do you do when Your dreams come true? (And ay Mamá) I’ve spent my life inheriting dreams from you”

I finally started living my life away from the thumb and the push that they put me on. Shit, this year even, I now know that so much could have been so different. How do you react when you realize that you probably inherited ASD from a parent and no one ever caught his? How would it be different? Twice exceptional could have made it a very different life.

It’s also really shocking in a way that my life is finally coming together in a way that would be absolutely unbelievable and shocking to me a decade ago. Catalysts are important for biological processes. No one said that everyone’s catalysts would be the same or come without significant strife.

I bid you all good night, who knows when I post here again, but I promise you, I haven’t given up and won’t ever do so. To do this would be a disservice to anyone and everyone.

See you on the flippity flip.

goodbye dad

How much do you think your world can change in a week? Just when everything is going so well (amidst looking for a full-time job in my career), how fast can everything get flipped on its head?

One week ago, my father died in his sleep. I’ll never forget waking up to my mother’s screams, as I scrambled out of bed to open the door and see his body lying there, apparently having passed in his sleep. The blur of the next few hours as the EMTs told me there was nothing they could do, the police trying to console us, just the confusion of it all. Nothing felt real. All I could do was shout at people to “help me wake up.” I kept calling different people, hoping that something would end this ridiculous and insane nightmare.

(Before I go too far, I want to take a minute and thank every single person who has reached out, prayed for, thought of, and supported my family in this time. We appreciate the outpouring of love and support more than you know.)

I didn’t want to and still don’t want to believe that the man I just sat and watched a Beach Boys documentary with on the 4th of July was just…gone. I just can’t believe that the man who told these awful dad jokes to me wasn’t going to do that anymore. This man, the one who discovered Youtube ten years after everyone else, wasn’t going to send me ridiculous videos of animals doing stupid things anymore. This man I looked up to more than anyone, he was finally at rest.

Even today, I still think I’m in a bit of disbelief. Even today, following the final internment of his ashes at the cemetery alongside his veteran brothers, I can’t believe he’s gone. Even today, my sisters and mother have been so strong, and I envy them and their ability to remain resolute. I keep breaking down, trying to understand or cope with what has transpired. I wish I was stronger now, and was able to get more sleep at night. I know that it will eventually come, but at least for now, it’s an intense despair that prevents me from much sleep.

two worlds journey

Instead, mine was short. Jumbled. Rambled. Mad. Confused. Dazed. Hopeful. Lost. I think I had the quote of the entire service with my loss of words and breathy “Well, ( looks at casket intently ) shit.” Tears flowed, and I couldn’t get the words out that I had worked on for a few days. Even now, I still wish I’d thanked him more, and I couldn’t get that or any stories to help create this image for everyone of my father.

I didn’t want to let him down, and I feel like, every day since his death, I have by not being strong for my mother for him. I went on two interviews this week, attempting to continue down this path he was so excited for me to be on. When you figure out what your life is meant for, it’s an exciting prospect. He was the first person I called after every interview, knowing that our brief conversation was something that gave both of us clarity into each other’s minds at the time. All I wanted to do on Tuesday was call him after, and it was another gut punch when I couldn’t.

With another rejection, I feel like I’ve let him down again. I’ll get back up like he would have wanted. One of the last things he ever said to me was “You can’t give up now kiddo,” and I’m going to try and honor that. The selflessness he’s shown in his life is something I want to impart on every single person in this life. It shone during the visitation on Sunday morning, as hundreds of people showed up to pay their respects. It was mind-blowing that all of these people came to pay their respects and let my family know that they were here for us.

My father was tired. He was hurting. He wasn’t sick, at least not outwardly. He spent over half his sixty-four years working himself to the bone every day to provide for my family. The things that man could do with some wood and nails deserve to be in museums in his prime. Carpentry is an art form in the hands of masters, and while some would look down on him for working with his hands every day, I am proud. He got up every morning, even when he was hurting, and he did what he could to provide. In the dictionary definition for the word  sacrifice , there will be an image of my father. He gave so much of himself to his family and his employers.

If I am half as selfless, half as humble, half as driven as he, then I know that my future children will have a good life. I want to do whatever I can to honor him. As I wrestle with the guilt of not forcing him to go to the ER the night before when he wasn’t feeling well – he argued that he just had a bug and would be fine in the morning, I will do what I can to show what he stood for. He still is my hero, even after all these years. Back in elementary school, I wrote a long essay about him being my hero. There was this hubbub at school, and he got to come – along with the other nominees – to be recognized. I still mean it to this day.

I wanted to tell stories at the funeral about the kind of man he was. Instead, I was able to croak out a few moments about how I wished I asked him more about his life. I knew enough though for a proper send-off. As directed to by the funeral director, we needed to pick three songs as a family that would give him the respect he deserved. I named off Eric Clapton, the Beatles, Queen, etc as bands and singers that I grew up listening to because my dad loved them. I bounced between songs, trying to discover what would be best and speak to me. I tore myself up looking for the right song that would teach all of us what he wanted us to know.

If you weren’t at the service, I know you’re shocked. This at a funeral!? It was my dad though, and the message is loud and clear. In fact, I think it resonates for all of us as well, that we have to move forward and continue on.

I charge ALL of you to stop reading this and go hug your parents, your significant others, your children, your friends, your family, everyone you can. Life is too short to just wait for another chance, and you have to seize it.

He had an amazing and full life, and I’m sorry I couldn’t describe it better when it mattered. He’d been all over the world, seen amazing sights, and even now, as we find more crazy things out about him as we go through his dressers, I find myself incredibly sad and distraught that he had so many more stories I never heard (He has a French paratrooper’s badge just sitting there, and I neither knew what it was nor how he got it). I see in these old photos the insane open smile I do, and it breaks my heart that I wasn’t more aware of how fast he was going. I’m glad he gets rest now.

two worlds journey

At any rate, we laid his ashes (he wanted to be cremated) to rest today. The military honors were special and touching, and I think it helped my family cope somewhat. While none of us want to believe the last week is real, I know that today will go a small way in helping us begin to move on. All of us are handling it in our own ways, but all of us are wanting him to be at peace.

Our family is closer today than we were a week ago. Our family is hurting, but we’ll make it through. We do this for him, because he’s worth this pain. After all, he broke his back for us. We do this to remember him and what he did for us every single day.

Raise your glasses for me, as we pay our respects to the man who circumnavigated the globe, the man who always listened before he spoke, the man who taught me most everything, the man who had incredible but true stories, the man who sacrificed for everyone he loved to have everything they wanted, and the man who will never be forgotten by everyone he met, the last of a dying breed.

And Dad, you simply can’t beat this view. I hope you love it.  requiescat in pace

Harry Potter and the Hero’s Journey

by MuggleNet · Published April 28, 2014 · Updated December 7, 2022

Last week, I found a post on Tumblr that analyzed a character from the TV show Doctor Who  and compared that character’s journey to the pattern of Joseph Campbell’s “monomyth,” or “the hero’s journey” (the original post can be found here ). Monomyth, as conveniently explained by Wikipedia, “is a basic pattern that its proponents argue is found in many narratives from around the world.” Essentially, it is the theory that many great literary heroes have all gone through the same seventeen stages of adventure (i.e., their stories all follow the same pattern).

Below is a diagram of the basic “hero’s journey”:

Still a bit confused? Here is how monomyth is explained by the creator of this idea himself:

A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man. – Joseph Campbell

After researching this for a while, I was inspired to make my own comparisons between Harry’s journey in the Harry Potter series to see if it matched up with Joseph Campbell’s pattern. I wrote out the seventeen stages of monomyth (read more here ) and added the description of each. Then I tried to relate points in Harry’s story to those stages, and I learned that we should continue in the argument that Harry Potter is classic literature since this fits almost seamlessly with the basic pattern that many great myths and stories follow.

Here’s my analysis:

1. The Call to Adventure

“The hero begins in a mundane situation of normality from which some information is received that acts as a call to head off into the unknown.”

For Harry, this was the classic “Yer a wizard, Harry” moment that sets the story in motion.

2. Refusal of the Call

“Often when the call is given, the future hero first refuses to heed it. This may be from a sense of duty or obligation, fear, insecurity, a sense of inadequacy, or any of a range of reasons that work to hold the person in his or her current circumstances.”

Harry’s “refusal” was the short-lived “I can’t be a wizard; I’m just Harry.”

3. Supernatural Aid

“Once the hero has committed to the quest, consciously or unconsciously, his guide and magical helper appears, or becomes known. More often than not, this supernatural mentor will present the hero with one or more talismans or artifacts that will aid them later in their quest.”

Hagrid plays the role of Harry’s “supernatural aid,” subsequently providing Harry with an “artifact” that will help him “later in [his] quest” — a wand.

4. The Crossing of the First Threshold

“This is the point where the person actually crosses into the field of adventure, leaving the known limits of his or her world and venturing into an unknown and dangerous realm where the rules and limits are not known.”

This would be Harry’s first steps into Diagon Alley, where he is fully submerged into the wizarding world.

5. Belly of the Whale

“The belly of the whale represents the final separation from the hero’s known world and self. By entering this stage, the person shows willingness to undergo a metamorphosis.”

While it is debatable which moment is the “belly of the whale,” I think the closest thing is when Harry is sorted into Gryffindor House, a place where he can finally belong like no other place in his life.

1. The Road of Trials

“The road of trials is a series of tests, tasks, or ordeals that the person must undergo to begin the transformation. Often the person fails one or more of these tests, which often occur in threes.”

Many “trials” occur in Harry’s time at Hogwarts, and they are typically presented in threes. For example, in Chamber of Secrets there is the Dueling Club, then following the spiders into the Forbidden Forest, and lastly Harry’s encounter with Tom Riddle and the Basilisk. There are also many Quidditch matches that could be considered trials or things like asking a date to the Yule Ball — however you see it, you have to agree that there is a  nearly never-ending road of trials in the Harry Potter series.

2. The Meeting with the Goddess

“This is the point when the person experiences a love that has the power and significance of the all-powerful, all encompassing, unconditional love that a fortunate infant may experience with his or her mother. This is a very important step in the process and is often represented by the person finding the other person that he or she loves most completely.”

I would argue that even though it is certainly out of order, Harry’s “meeting with the goddess” was when he was an infant and Lily died to protect him. This act saved Harry’s life many times and even helped defeat Voldemort later on, so it matches up with the criteria of being “a love that has the power and significance of the all-powerful.”

3. Woman as Temptress

“In this step, the hero faces those temptations, often of a physical or pleasurable nature, that may lead him or her to abandon or stray from his or her quest, which does not necessarily have to be represented by a woman. Woman is a metaphor for the physical or material temptations of life since the hero-knight was often tempted by lust from his spiritual journey.”

This one is tough because Harry doesn’t really ever “stray from his quest.” I think that the closest thing to this would be his relationship with Ginny since she was always on Harry’s mind, and him breaking up with her for her own safety at the beginning of  Deathly Hallows shows that Harry tried to push away this “temptress.”

4. Atonement with the Father

“In this step the person must confront and be initiated by whatever holds the ultimate power in his or her life. In many myths and stories this is the father, or a father figure who has life and death power. This is the center  point of the journey. All the previous steps have been moving into this place, all that follow will move out from it. Although this step is most frequently symbolized by an encounter with a male entity, it does not have to be a male – just someone or thing with incredible power.”

Even though there are many moments when Harry has had “atonement” with James, at this point in the story Dumbledore is the “father” and mentor of this stage and is the one who “holds the ultimate power.” This act being the “center point” of the journey, we can conclude that this moment is best represented by:

  • Being “initiated” by helping Dumbledore search for the locket Horcrux
  • Dumbledore’s death at the Astronomy Tower, a turning point for Harry

5. Apotheosis

“When someone dies a physical death, or dies to the self to live in spirit, he or she moves beyond the pairs of opposites to a state of divine knowledge, love, compassion and bliss. A more mundane way of looking at this step is that it is a period of rest, peace and fulfillment before the hero begins the return.”

Harry’s apotheosis is when he sacrifices himself to Voldemort in Deathly Hallows , physically dying and meeting Dumbledore in the purgatory/King’s Cross dream state. It is certainly a “period of rest” and allows Harry to  think through his plan and have a moment of “fulfillment” with Dumbledore, who finally answers the questions that Harry had been desperately wanting answers to.

6. The Ultimate Boon

“The ultimate boon is the achievement of the goal of the quest. It is what the person went on the journey to get. All the previous steps serve to prepare and purify the person for this step since in many myths the boon is something transcendent like the elixir of life itself or a plant that supplies immortality or the holy grail.”

Plain and simple: when Voldemort’s spell backfired and killed him, leaving Harry victorious.

1. Refusal of the Return

“Having found bliss and enlightenment in the other world, the hero may not want to return to the ordinary world to bestow the boon onto his fellow man.”

There is not a direct example of this in Harry Potter since we know little about what happened directly after the Battle of Hogwarts.

2. The Magic Flight

“Sometimes the hero must escape with the boon, if it is something that the gods have been jealously guarding. It can be just as adventurous and dangerous returning from the journey as it was to go on it.”

Once more, there is not a direct example of this in Harry’s journey because of the limited information we are given after the “Ultimate Boon” stage.

3. Rescue from Without

“Just as the hero may need guides and assistants to set out on the quest, oftentimes he or she must have powerful guides and rescuers to bring them back to everyday life, especially if the person has been wounded or weakened by the experience.”

We can assume that Ginny was a one of the “guides” for Harry after the battle, leading him back to everyday life since in the epilogue they are living happy and peaceful lives.

4. The Crossing of the Return Threshold

“The trick in returning is to retain the wisdom gained on the quest, to integrate that wisdom into a human life, and then maybe figure out how to share the wisdom with the rest of the world.”

Harry shared some of his “wisdom” with Albus Severus on Platform 9 3/4 when he reassured Albus that it did not matter what house he was sorted into, because “the bravest man” he ever knew was a Slytherin. This reflects directly back to the first novel when Harry himself was concerned about being sorted into Slytherin, and this moment in the epilogue at the train station is a little tidbit of Harry sharing knowledge from his journey “with the rest of the world.”

5. Master of Two Worlds

“This step is usually represented by a transcendental hero like Jesus or Gautama Buddha. For a human hero, it may mean achieving a balance between the material and spiritual. The person has become comfortable and competent in both the inner and outer worlds.”

Again, in the epilogue, Harry is shown content with everyday life while still being connected to the wizarding world.

6. Freedom to Live

“Mastery leads to freedom from the fear of death, which in turn is the freedom to live. This is sometimes referred to as living in the moment, neither anticipating the future nor regretting the past.”

We do not see any regret from Harry, but regarding the future we are told that “the scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years” and that finally, “all was well.”

I encourage you to research monomyth deeper — it was so interesting to learn about. There are many different variations out there, and I’ve read other comparisons of the hero’s journey to well-known stories (including Star Wars and even Lilo & Stitch ). Feel free to let me know in the comments if you agreed or disagreed with any of these comparisons or if you know any more about monomyth!

Editorial Reviews

“Every chaplain, theologian, caregiver, and healthcare professional can find profound truth captured on each page of Where Two Worlds Touch . Jade Angelica builds from the narrative of her experience as a caregiver and invites the reader to journey with her into the highly significant theo-philosophical literature that has arisen in the last decade around the experience of the deeply forgetful and those who care for them. The reader will find that there is a place for love and hope and continuing selfhood in an experience that is more than just half-full if we can see it rightly. This is a beautiful book and the deepest I have read on the topic.” —Stephen G. Post, author of The Moral Challenge of Alzheimer Disease: Ethical Issues from Diagnosis to Dying

“The consciousness-raising and worldview-shifting insights found in Where Two Worlds Touch might have a positive systemic impact on society if it were to become the go-to book for those whose lives are touched by Alzheimer's.” —Patty Sutherland, Foreword Reviews

“Very few writers possess the wit and spunk of Jade Angelica, especially combined with an uncanny insight into the art of giving care. Where Two Worlds Touch is filled with pathos, anger, joy, and hope. Information about the science and medical treatment of Alzheimer's disease is readily available, but caregivers reaching for spiritual guidance have largely been left on their own. Angelica offers much-needed guidance on topics like "Healing When There Is No Cure," "Redefining Survival," and "Forgetting, Forgiving, and Reconciling." Angelica's life story as an estranged daughter, a Harvard theological student, and eventually the primary caregiver for her mom has led her to a place where she can hold the hands of other caregivers and share her hopeful credo, that two worlds can indeed touch, even if one world is altered by distance and disease. I have decided to gift each of my support group members with a copy of Where Two Worlds Touch .” —Joanne Koenig Coste, author of Learning to Speak Alzheimer's: A Groundbreaking Approach for Everyone Dealing with the Disease

“I am so very impressed by this exceptionally well-written and well-researched book. Jade Angelica deserves rave reviews for her unique balance of compassion, insight, and scientific support on a very complex issue. I strongly recommend Where Two Worlds Touch for caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's dementia.” —Robert A. Stern, Clinical Core Director, Boston University Alzheimer's Disease Center, Boston University School of Medicine

“ Where Two Worlds Touch is a perfect blend of sacred/spiritual and everyday insight for caregivers. Angelica bravely describes her relationship with her mother pre-dementia, helping readers to understand that they can have meaningful relationships with loved ones who have Alzheimer's, even when those relationships have been fraught with difficulty in the past. The book offers practical tools, such as improvisational techniques, and spiritual reflection to help readers transform the lives of people with dementia and their own lives as well. Angelica helps care partners to approach people with dementia in a creative way that does not focus on what the person cannot do. Instead, the focus is on entering into the person's reality, which often leaves us surprised, excited, and humbled at the abilities and memories that remain.” —Melanie Chavin, Vice President of Program Services, Alzheimer's Association, Greater Illinois Chapter

“ Where Two Worlds Touch is a timely manifesto that will forever change the way our society cares for individuals with dementia. This is a must-read book for all caretakers of patients with Alzheimer's disease. Angelica is a prescient observer of the human condition and has done a wonderful job of providing rich anecdotes, clear prose, and novel strategies that really work. Given that there is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease, it is imperative that our society develop and follow a humane standard of care for these individuals. Where Two Worlds Touch provides a blueprint for how we can ameliorate the suffering and dramatically improve the quality of life for Alzheimer's patients.” —Justin Feinstein, Clinical Neuropsychologist, Laureate Institute for Brain Research

“Any caregiver who has felt duty-bound to support a spouse, parent, or other loved one with Alzheimer's disease will find a path to compassionate care as they follow Jade Angelica's personal transformation from a wounded, distant daughter to her mother's loving companion in Where Two Worlds Touch . Embedded in wisdom from a variety of spiritual traditions, Jade's inspirational story provides a new and hopeful way for caregivers to approach the daily challenges of Alzheimer's disease and connect meaningfully with loved ones.” —Cordula Dick-Muehlke, Associate Clinical Professor, Department of Family Medicine and Division of Geriatrics, University of California, Irvine School of Medicine

“Jade Angelica has written an engaging and reflective book that is both personal and political. The commandment to honor your parent is not always easy. Angelica's focus on the care of people with Alzheimer's highlights this and brings out the often unspoken challenges of the practical, emotional, moral, and spiritual work we need to do to protect the most vulnerable members of our society.” —Rabbi Sara Paasche-Orlow, Spiritual Care Director, Hebrew SeniorLife, Boston

“Jade Angelica is a sojourner from the land of Alzheimer's bearing witness that all there is not lost. Her testimony is even more outrageous: We can experience in that far country depths of being alive, and in love, that the worlds of perfect health may never understand. Where Two Worlds Touch is a treasure chest of spiritual gems, the boon of an adventure into and out of the valley of the shadow of death. If you or someone you love are in the land of Alzheimer's, read this spirited-inspired travel log and find your way home.” —Michael Verde, Founder and Director, Memory Bridge

“ Where Two Worlds Touch is one of the finest accounts of the spiritual journey of Alzheimer's, for both the caregiver and care recipient, that I've read. Jade Angelica gives us the gift of an honest, reflective account of journeying through Alzheimer's with her mom. Jade brings to the journey and to the telling of it the fruit of years of theological study and reflection, meditative practice, improvisational theater techniques, spiritual direction, and a pastoral heart. It was a journey fraught with personal, emotional, and spiritual difficulties, but it was in the crucible of Alzheimer's disease where her relationship with her mom was transformed and healed. As she notes in the introduction, this book may not be comforting or helpful for everyone. But for those who want to reframe Alzheimer's to focus on the gifts that remain and who want to be stretched in mind, heart, and spirit—this is the book to read.” —Nancy Gordon, Director, California Lutheran Homes Center for Spirituality and Aging

“Jade Angelica has given a blessed gift to all persons whose lives are touched by Alzheimer's or other dementias (and that is all of us)! Wise and witty, Where Two Worlds Touch teaches us to see the whole person who is still very much present within the reality of progressive memory loss. Dementia cannot be cured, but Angelica teaches us that life can remain good, filled with love and laughter, even as cognitive ability declines.” —John T. McFadden, co-author of Aging Together: Dementia, Friendship and Flourishing Communities

“This book, in recounting one mother and daughter's poignant caresharing journey into Alzheimer's disease, reflects on the spiritual dimensions of struggle, suffering, and companioning. The author offers wise counsel and practical ideas in rethinking the carer role, sharing through improvisation, and effectively advocating for the personhood of the cared for. Ways to transform the carer role are offered. Spiritual themes addressed throughout the book offer unique and important perspectives on independence and quality of life for both care partners. The book is a first-person account of a journey, yet it speaks to universal concerns. It is a thoughtful and hopeful addition to the literature about dementia and caregiving.” —Marty Richards, author of Caresharing: A Reciprocal Approach to Caregiving and Care Receiving in the Complexities of Aging, Illness or Disability

“Jade Angelica captures the essence of being an Alzheimer's care partner. She transforms a task frequently perceived as complex, difficult, and discouraging, into one that is a joyful, rewarding experience for both partners. By being fully present and "saying yes" to her partner's reality, she accepts and validates her partner's persona and joyfully joins her in the world of dementia. Where Two Worlds Touch is a practical and spiritual guide for all who choose to travel the journey through Alzheimer's disease together.” —Charles J Farrell, President, Carolyn L Farrell Foundation for Brain Health

“Grounded in research and inspired by poetry, spiritual insight, and personal reflection, this testimony to the transforming power of love touches at the root of what makes us human—the ability to maintain relationship despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Jade Angelica's indomitable spirit uses every means available to her creative imagination to seek and eventually find a means to heal and be healed through relationship with her mother, who is succumbing to the diminishments of Alzheimer's Disease. This is spiritual direction at its best—alert to Divine guidance while attending to present-moment reality. Ms. Angelica allows knowledge to remain in the background as she deftly gains insight into the nuanced communication of her slowly diminishing mother. Warmly, open-heartedly, keenly, perseveringly, their relationship yields to mutual transformation. This is a testimony to the power of love at work in those who willingly receive. Thank you to Jade Angelica for this witness to the power of the human spirit to prevail in the midst of chaos, darkness, and confusion—a true story of the reality of resurrection for those vulnerable enough to see.” —Martha L. Campbell, Former Director, Spiritual Guidance Program, Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation, Washington, DC

“Jade Angelica has written an intensely personal yet also universally applicable treatment of Alzheimer's disease that is real, honest, and wise. Blending sound research with helpful and often moving accounts of caring (in every sense of the word) for those with Alzheimer's, her writing is clear and engaging and provides a great deal of practical advice.” —Stephen Sapp, Professor of Religious Studies, University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL

“Inspiring! Angelica's day-to-day journey with her Mom through Alzheimer's to death is a deeply informative story of caring and growing in the process. Through the sharing of her story she makes a profound case for the need to be with and for another who suffers from the disease. She also gives many clues about how to do it. I suggest that it's a "must read" for anyone who has a family member or friend with Alzheimer's, and for everyone who works with Alzheimer's patients as a nurse, an aide, or volunteer.” —Janaan Manternach, co-author of Alzheimer's Disease: A Handbook for Caregivers, Family and Friends

Where Two Worlds Touch is like a tapestry, woven together by poetry and stories drawn from my experiences and those of other Alzheimer’s caregivers, informed by literature in the Alzheimer’s field of research, and grounded by spiritual and theological resources. The meetings between Mom and me anchor the universal aspects of my message within individual lives. The overall purpose of Where Two Worlds Touch is to remind us of the inherent dignity and worth of all persons—even persons with cognitive decline—and to remind us that interconnectedness is a central aspect of being human. We are not separate from per-sons with Alzheimer’s. Our lives are woven together, and we are on this journey together.

Although this book is the culmination of many years of academic study, the information is presented in a style designed to open hearts and engage the spiritual imagination of readers as well as to be intellectually enlightening. The writing style is intended to be accessible for a general audience of family and professional Alzheimer’s caregivers, with the goal of sharing the wisdom and comfort I have received from many teachers and companions. For those readers interested in the more academic aspects of my study of Alzheimer’s care, including brain science and current research, detailed references are located in the Resources and Notes sections.

Although my intention is to comfort and accompany caregivers on the journey through Alzheimer’s, my experience and interpretation may not speak to or comfort all caregivers, especially those who are grieving the loss of a loved one with Alzheimer’s who is still living. My story is not one of losing my mother while she was living with Alzheimer’s. Accordingly, my reflections do not focus on what was lost. They focus on what was found: my openness to discovering new possibilities, a deep relationship with my mother, and unconditional love flowing between us. Implementing improvisational theater techniques to effectively communicate and connect with, and care for persons with Alzheimer’s is one of the unique discoveries I made and describe in this book.

One caregiving setting specifically addressed is the nursing home. For caregivers approaching the need to move their loved ones to assisted living or nursing home facilities, it’s important to appreciate the difficulties surrounding this life change. It’s an environment that caregivers may need to return to again and again until we can understand and accept that this is now our loved one’s home. It’s important to be gentle with ourselves during this transition but also to be committed and disciplined in our efforts to overcome any resistance.

For more than nine years, I have been immersed in rich learning about Alzheimer’s care. Combining my personal encounter with Alzheimer’s with my academic inquiry and my training and experience as a spiritual director, I write as a spiritual companion for family caregivers and anyone who loves someone with Alzheimer’s. Where Two Worlds Touch reveals the experience of caregiving through the lens of a spiritual journey that has the potential to lead us through Alzheimer’s into healing and wholeness. By embracing persons with Alzheimer’s with open hearts, holy vision, and healing presence, it’s possible that caregivers on this sacred journey will bear witness to the transforming power of Alzheimer’s, as I did. It’s also possible that caregivers will notice and receive unexpected gifts, and experience awe and gratitude for the ways that Alzheimer’s can touch our hearts and transform our lives.

About the author

Jade c. angelica.

My mother, Jeanne, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2001, and this became a life-changing event for everyone in my family. Although terrified at first, I was inspired by Mom's vulnerability to learn as much as I could about the disease and to help her have as good a life as possible. In 2007, I founded the Healing Moments Alzheimer's Ministry (www.healingmoments.org), and currently I design workshops, services, and trainings for Healing Moments™ and offer presentations throughout the country.

In addition I offer spiritual direction and Alzheimer’s inspiration for individuals and groups.

My education and training has prepared me for this challenging and rewarding work and I am so grateful for the opportunities I had to study at Harvard Divinity School, the Shalem Institute Spiritual Guidance Program, and Andover Newton Theological School. Surprisingly, my education from Improv Boston University, where I learned to be “perfectly OK not knowing what in the world is going on!” has provided much guidance and skill in my work with persons with Alzheimer's.

Without question, my most important and most rewarding ministry, to date, has been caring for my mother who died from Alzheimer’s in 2011.

two worlds journey

Rep. Gabe Amo reflects on journey from Pawtucket to Capitol Hill

Who is Gabe Amo?

He emerged from a crowded field of candidates to win a special election in Rhode Island's 1st Congressional District.

And with the victory, he gained power and recognition as a household name in political circles almost overnight.

Amo took NBC 10 News back to Moses Brown, where he was a student, to learn about his upbringing, his passion and his personal life.

It was among the shelves of books inside the Moses Brown Library where 17-year-old Amo would discover the memoire of someone who would become his mentor.

"I remember the area of the library where I pulled out Barack Obama's 'Dreams of my Father,'" Amo said. "I remember pulling it out and being a little late to return it."

For the new congressman who succeeded David Cicilline in a special election five months ago, it was life-changing and symbolic.

"You saw somebody who looked like you, who had a last name that wasn't common, and you said, 'If he can do it, maybe I can too," said Amo.

Riding the RIPTA bus, Amo came from humble beginnings in Pawtucket.

As a scholarship student, it was like two worlds colliding.

"I would say I’m a mediocre high school student, but I knew that my passion in politics and public service was  something that maybe I could work in one day," Amo said. "I wasn’t a great athlete."

The son of immigrants, his dad, a liquor store owner in Providence, and his mom, a nurse.

Amo recognized it would take more than just passion to achieve his goals.

He attended Wheaton College and then Oxford University, before going to Washington and serving under one of his mentors, Obama.

Amo served under former Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo before heading back to the White House to work in the Biden administration.

He became an overnight congressman, beating a crowded field, and making national headlines as the first Black congressman in Rhode Island history.

"When I ran, I said very consistently that I'm running to make a difference not to make history. That said, I know that that has a whole lot of meaning to a lot of people, and so that means it should be important to me too," said Amo.

However polished he may seem, Amo said he hopes people see where he came from.

"I still hope when people see me, they still see the kid who hopped on a RIPTA bus, who showed to his dad’s liquor store on a weeknight to help out, and someone who is genuine and who has the beginnings and wants to do a good job," Amo said.

The congressman admitted he has a tough time unwinding.

"I have a tough time turning off. I think it’s not a good thing to always be working for survival. We need to shut everything out and focus on how to be best. I try to carve out space. At least a half a day on the weekend to do just nothing," he said.

Amo said he takes at least half of a day for himself. Currently, he's binge-watching "Abbott Elementary."

The kid from Pawtucket, now called congressman, but he holds tightly to his roots.

"It’s weird. I insist on people calling me Gabe," he said.
