Global Visa Wait Times

Last updated: 6-27-2024

The estimated wait time to receive an interview appointment at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate can change weekly and is based on actual incoming workload and staffing. These are estimates only and do not guarantee the availability of an appointment.

Note: Embassies and Consulates may have a separate process for visa cases where the in-person interview requirement is waived.  In general wait times for those cases are shorter, but they are not reflected in the table below.  Please check the individual Embassy or Consulate website to determine if your case is eligible for a waiver of the in-person interview.

Applicants scheduling visa appointments in a location different from their place of residence should check post websites for nonresident wait times.

Indians face up to 3-year waits for U.S. tourist visas as consulates on the subcontinent are in disarray

The Embassy of The United States of America on December 17, 2013 in New Delhi, India.

In a Facebook group filled with almost 25,000 South Asians looking to travel to the U.S., daily anonymous posts fly in by the hundreds.

“I am looking for B1/ B2 visa appointment in the next year,” one person wrote.

Dozens of commenters underneath the appeal affirm its message: “Me too,” “Looking for my parents,” “The earliest one I’m seeing is for 2025.”

The mass scramble is the result of record-long wait times for Indian nationals trying to get a tourist visa to the U.S., according to experts.

Waiting periods at American consulates in India range from a few months to several years just to secure an interview. A simple visit for the holiday season would sometimes require almost three years of advanced planning for someone who doesn’t already hold a visa.

Immigration economists say beyond the personal damage this is causing to families, the inaccessibility has the potential to stymie Indian immigration to the United States overall.

“This is clearly a broken system,” said Gaurav Khanna, an assistant professor of economics at the University of California at San Diego, whose research focuses on immigration. “Grandparents haven’t seen grandkids in four years because of Covid, and now they can’t get visas. That affects how welcome the Indian diaspora themselves feel in the U.S. ‘If my family can’t come visit us, I don’t think my life in the U.S. is as rewarding as I was promised.’”

In some Indian cities, like Chennai and Hyderabad, the wait time for a tourist visa interview is 999 days, according to numbers released by the U.S. State Department, which far exceeds the global median wait time of two months. In Kolkata, the wait is 959 days. Other consulates are only taking appointments for emergency tourist visas, which experts suspect have a shorter backlog of their own.

“Just from a pure management, organizational point of view, it seems like a completely dysfunctional system,” Khanna said.

NBC News reached out to the State Department and has not received a response. In a statement released last month , they acknowledged prolonged wait times across the globe.

“The Department of State is successfully lowering visa interview wait times worldwide,” the statement said. “We have doubled our hiring of U.S. Foreign Service personnel to do this important work, visa processing is rebounding faster than projected, and in Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 we expect to reach pre‑pandemic visa processing levels.”

According to Julia Gelatt, a senior analyst with the Migration Policy Institute, the disarray stems from travel moratoriums and hiring freezes during the height of the pandemic that left thousands of visas backlogged. The State Department cites staffing issues which it is trying to remedy, but Gelatt says it won't be a quick process.

“The State Department says that they’re doubling their hiring and they’re training up staff,” Gelatt said. “But it takes a while to staff consulates because they’re teaching Americans new languages and giving them lots of training before they’re put in their posts.”

But the Covid explanation isn’t satisfactory for Khanna.

“Most countries have had Covid-related backlogs and staffing issues,” he said. “At some point staffing issues are a sign of dysfunction…It’s fairly easy to get a visa to come to India from the U.S. People just have to wait a few weeks. But the other way around it takes a very long time. It shows that efficient systems can exist to grant visas.”

As the consulates’ backlogs continue to grow and available appointments stretch years into the future, some are taking matters into their own hands. On Facebook and WhatsApp, some South Asian organizations are offering people a back channel to earlier interview times, Khanna has observed.

Dozens of social media groups dedicated to solving visa issues have cropped up this year alone , with admins flaunting successful early interview appointment bookings and encouraging members to direct-message them for help. Often marketed as "visa consulting," or "interview early date help," they reserve upcoming appointments in large numbers, then cancel and sell the slots to desperate travelers willing to spend the money, Khanna said.

“That’s, again, a sign that there’s something wrong with the system here,” he said. “People who get in touch with these groups can pay a lot of money to get a quicker appointment. That’s really exacerbating the problem. But people are willing to pay.”

Khanna says they’re capitalizing off a lack of clarity behind the processes and complications that often arise when trying to get even a short-term U.S. visa.

It adds another financial barrier to entry for lower-income South Asians trying to visit the United States, Khanna said.

“It’s not equitable,” he said. “The consulates are saying it’s a staffing issue. Essentially, that’s another way of saying, ‘we haven’t gotten our act together.’ It’s not an excuse in any way.”

Khanna said families will continue to go years without seeing each other and America’s image as a haven for Indian immigrants has the potential to deteriorate.

“As it is, they’re leaving their family on the other side of the world and now it’s difficult for their family to come visit,” he said. “That has impacts that are not just related to tourism. It has impacts on where the diaspora are willing to settle down. Do we want to be in a place like the U.S. where our family finds it so difficult to visit?”

U.S. Embassy Issues Record Visas, Extended Wait Times Persist: India Report

The issue of long wait times for U.S. visas, particularly for Indian applicants, stands out amidst the overall increase in U.S. visa applications and issuances.

Demand for U.S. visas from Indian travelers are at record highs. But 500-day wait times or longer continue to hinder travel to the U.S.

The State Department confirmed the record-breaking issuance of over 140,000 student visas  to Indians. The U.S. embassy and consulates in India said they issued nearly 8 million visitor visas for business and tourism for the recent fiscal year. This is the highest output recorded since 2016. A near-historic 10.4 million non-immigrant visas were granted worldwide.

India is not alone in its visa dilemma. Wait times for first-time visitor visas in Colombia and Mexico are equally high. The U.S. Travel Association forecasts these delays will cost the industry $12 billion in lost traveler spending this year.

The U.S. State Department has introduced measures to address visa backlogs like waiving interview requirements and extending weekend interviews. Yet, the wait times for visa processing have only been reduced by 100 days for Indian travelers, down from 600 days in March.

Key Source Market:  In the first six months of 2023, over 800,000 Indian travelers went to the U.S., making it  America’s second-largest non-North American market  after the UK this year.

Indian Travel Recovery to the U.S. : For 2023, the U.S. is expected to welcome 1.4 million Indian travelers, 97% of the pre-pandemic volume. Nearly 60% of Indian travelers came to the U.S. for vacation, business, or a conference in the first six months of this year.

Sri Lanka’s Free Tourist Visas Pilot Begins

Closer to home, Sri Lanka’s pilot project to offer free 30-day visas to Indian travelers, announced at the end of October, kicked off on Wednesday, and will run until March 31, 2024.

It is the latest country after Thailand and Malaysia to join in offering easier access for Indians.

Sri Lanka’s Tourism Recovery : India is traditionally  Sri Lanka’s top inbound tourism market . In October 2023, arrival figures for India topped with over 28,000 or 26 percent with Russian tourists trailing at over 10,000 arrivals as the second largest group. The free tourist visa pilot includes India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand.

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry endured a severe blow due to the Covid-19 pandemic, followed by an  economic crisis last year . The country welcomed 1 million arrivals by September, the first time since 2019, with the island nation expected to conclude the year with 1.5 million arrivals.

UNWTO Selects Madhya Pradesh’s Madla for Village Upgrade Program

IndiGo Sets Visual Flight Rules Milestone at Deoghar Airport

IndiGo will be the first airline to operate flights with visibility as low as 3,600 meters for Airbus and 3,200 meters for ATR fleet at Deoghar Airport.

Poor Seasonal Visibility : Visual flight rules (VFR) at Deoghar Airport were limited to daylight hours with a visibility requirement of 5,000 meters. The low-cost carrier applied for civil aviation approval for special VFR operations at the airport, as poor visibility above 5000 meters during the winter led to many flight cancellations.

Less Disruption:  Deoghar Airport is a hub in the eastern sector of India, connecting the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. IndiGo’s successful flight validation for special VFR operations will reduce disruptions, especially those caused by adverse weather conditions in winter.

Wait time up to 3yrs! Here’s how long a US visa appointment will take in your city

By Condé Nast Traveller

New York flight

In September, when the US Embassy resumed in-person B1/B2 (tourist) visa appointments, slots were quickly booked out until April 2023. Most applicants who wanted to plan a trip to the US would have to wait months for an appointment. Unfortunately, wait times haven’t gotten any better since. If you are a first-time visitor visa applicant, depending on which Indian city you are applying from, you may have to wait for almost three years for your US visa appointment.

US embassy officials are taking steps to reduce the wait time for Indian applicants. More applicants are being made eligible for an interview waiver, temporary staff is being hired for faster movement and dropbox cases are being sent abroad for quicker processing. However, the backlog from Covid, along with the fierce resurgence of travel means several travellers are going to have to keep their US plans on hold. Here’s how long you will have to wait for a US visa appointment in your city, as per the official  website .

US visa wait time in India

Mumbai: 999 days Delhi : 961 days Hyderabad: 994 days Chennai: 948 days Kolkata: 904 days

So, should you apply for a US visa right now?

The US embassy is working to prioritise visa applications from India, given the high demand. Staffing is likely to get better by summer 2023 and wait times may become far shorter by then. Students will get priority during admission season, followed by repeat B1 or B2 applicants whose visas expired within four years of application. While first-time B1/B2 applicants will have to wait a few months to see a reduction in wait times, embassy officials recommend applying nonetheless. “Once the line starts moving and wait time drops, they can advance their interview date without any fees,” a senior official  said last week.

US Visa Wait Times in India: The Earliest Appointment for B1/B2 visa is Expected by March 2024

“I have not visited my parents for two years. I shelved travel plans because of pocket-burning airline tickets to India after the resumption of regular international flights early this year. I was blessed with a baby recently. I wish either my parents or the in-laws to be with us at the current phase of our parenthood. But no luck with B2 visa appointment dates for them. I desperately keep logged in on the US Embassy India website hoping to get a slot available; however, we are in shock that the earliest appointment is expected by March-April 2024,” Aparna Kaushik from Chicago said to Sourav Agarwal, the Editor of Travel Beats.

International travel restrictions have been lifted. Country-specific entry regulations have abated. Airlines have restored their service frequency to the pre-pandemic times. But visa appointment delays continue to be a nightmare for Indians seeking interview slots for the US visitor visa, B1/B2. Particularly, the first-time applicants are at the mercy of the US Embassy and Consulates grappling with the mounting backlog of applications and the staffing shortage in India. If sources are to be believed, the backlog has exceeded 4 lakh Indian applicants awaiting interview slots for B2 and other US visas.

“Early this month we posted on our Twitter page that the US Embassy India would resume in-person tourist visa appointments from September. Surprisingly, in only two weeks, the slots got booked until April 2023. Now more than 500 days is the average wait time for the US visitor visa appointment dates in India, according to the US State Department website,” said the chief customer relations officer of Indian Eagle , a leading air-ticketing partner of Indians in America.

It means that if you apply for a US visitor visa now, your chances for getting an appointment before 2024 are minimal to none . This is nothing short of a nightmare for the first-time applicants who are required to appear for an in-person interview and biometrics. However, the wait time is relatively shorter for B2 visa renewals and those planning a business trip to the United States.

“Though the US visa wait times vary from consulate to consulate in India, this is the worst that I have ever seen since the September attacks 2001,” said David Bier, the associate director of immigration policy at Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank in Washington DC.

The US Embassy in New Delhi has B2/B1 visa appointment dates 582 calendar days away and students visa slots some 470 days away. The US Consulate in Mumbai expects 580 calendar days to be the estimated waiting time for a US visitor visa appointment. 520 calendar days is the likely wait time for the same at the US Consulate in Hyderabad, whereas a US student visa appointment is 477 days away. In Kolkata, the US Consulate has the wait time spanning 585 calendar days from now for B1/B2 interview slots. The average wait time is 510 calendar days for B1/B2 visa appointment dates at the US Consulate, Chennai, according to the US Department of State website.

What is Dropbox Visa?

The “dropbox visa” refers to the process of renewing a US visa without having to attend an in-person interview at a US consulate . This is officially known as the Interview Waiver Program (IWP). The term “dropbox” comes from the method of submitting your visa renewal documents via designated drop-off locations, eliminating the need for a consular interview.

Key Features of the Dropbox Visa Process

  • Eligibility : The dropbox facility is available for specific non-immigrant visa categories such as B1/B2 (business/tourist), F (student), J (exchange visitor), M (vocational student), O (individuals with extraordinary ability or achievement), H (temporary workers), among others.
  • Criteria : To qualify, you must meet strict criteria, such as having a previous visa in the same category, the visa being still valid or expired within the last 48 months, and no significant changes in your personal information or visa status.
  • Submission Method : Instead of scheduling an in-person interview, you can submit your documents to a designated dropbox location. These documents are then processed by consular officers without the need for a face-to-face interview.
  • Convenience : This process is designed to make the visa renewal process more convenient, saving time and reducing the workload on consular staff.

Dropbox for US Visa: When to Opt for It ?

Choosing the dropbox for US visa renewal can save you significant time and hassle, but it’s essential to know when it’s the right option for you. Opting for the dropbox facility is ideal if you meet specific eligibility criteria, need to avoid the lengthy wait times associated with in-person interviews, and prefer a more streamlined application process.

Explore when you should consider this option.

When deciding whether to use the dropbox for US visa renewal, consider the following factors:

  • Extensive Evidence Availability : Ensure you have all necessary documentation readily available. This includes the DS-160 confirmation, current and previous passports, passport-size photos, previous visa details, employment verification (if applicable), and I-797 approval notice (for H1-B, L visas, etc.). Missing documents can delay processing or result in a requirement for an in-person interview.
  • Urgency of Travel : If your travel plans are imminent, the dropbox facility may be the best option due to its typically faster processing times. However, ensure that the expected processing period aligns with your travel schedule.
  • Potential for Interview Requests : While the dropbox option usually omits the need for an interview, there is always a possibility that the consulate may request one if additional information or clarification is needed. Be prepared for this contingency, though it is relatively rare.

Pros and Cons of Choosing the Dropbox Option Over In-Person Interviews

Evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of the dropbox facility can help in making an informed decision.

  • Convenience : Submitting documents via the dropbox eliminates the need for an in-person interview, saving time and reducing the hassle of scheduling and attending an appointment at the consulate.
  • Faster Processing : The dropbox process is generally quicker as it bypasses the interview stage, leading to faster visa renewals.
  • Reduced Stress : Avoiding an in-person interview can reduce the anxiety and stress often associated with consular interviews, especially for applicants with a history of visa compliance.
  • Limited Eligibility : Not all applicants qualify for the dropbox option. Strict eligibility criteria mean that some may still need to go through the traditional interview process.
  • Documentation Scrutiny : The documents submitted via dropbox undergo thorough examination. Any discrepancies or missing information can lead to delays or the requirement for an in-person interview.
  • Unforeseen Interview Requests : There remains a small chance that the consulate may request an in-person interview if additional information is needed, which can disrupt travel plans.

Importance of Checking Embassy or Consulate-Specific Requirements and Conditions for Dropbox Eligibility

Each US embassy or consulate may have specific requirements and conditions for the dropbox facility. It is crucial to verify these details to ensure a smooth application process.

  • Embassy or Consulate Websites : Visit the official website of the US embassy or consulate where you plan to submit your application. They often provide detailed instructions, specific document requirements, and eligibility criteria for the dropbox facility.
  • Consular Announcements : Stay updated with any announcements or changes in policies regarding the dropbox option. Changes in eligibility criteria, required documents, or processing times can affect your application.
  • Contact Information : If in doubt, use the contact information provided on the consulate’s website to seek clarification on any specific requirements or conditions that may apply to your situation.

A: Yes, students holding F, J, or M visas can use the US visa drop box process if they meet the eligibility criteria. Their previous visa must have been issued after an interview and be within the last 48 months . This process simplifies renewals for students continuing their studies in the United States. By using the dropbox facility, students can focus more on their education and less on the logistics of visa renewals.

Q: What should I do if I don’t meet the US visa dropbox eligibility?

A: If you don’t meet the US visa dropbox eligibility , you will need to schedule an in-person interview at the nearest US consulate. Ensure you prepare all required documents and check for any additional requirements specific to your visa type. This traditional process may take longer but is necessary for those not eligible for the dropbox. It’s important to plan ahead to accommodate potential delays in the in-person interview process.

Q: Are there any fees associated with the dropbox process for US visa renewal?

A: Yes, there are fees associated with the dropbox process for US visa renewal. These include the visa application fee, which varies by visa type, and any additional fees for document preparation or courier services. Ensure you check the exact fee amount on the official US visa website. Budgeting for these costs in advance will help avoid any surprises during the application process.

Q: How does the dropbox for us visa help in reducing processing times?

A: The dropbox for US visa helps reduce processing times by eliminating the need for in-person interviews, allowing consulates to handle more applications efficiently. According to recent data, this method can cut overall processing time by up to 30% , making it a preferred option for eligible applicants. By streamlining the process, applicants can enjoy quicker renewals and less uncertainty about their travel plans.

Q: What are the benefits of using the US visa drop box process?

A: Benefits of using the US visa drop box process include faster processing times, convenience of not attending an in-person interview, and a simplified document submission procedure. This method is especially useful for those with busy schedules or urgent travel plans. Additionally, it helps consulates manage their workload more effectively, benefiting both applicants and consular services.

Q: Why is the dropbox eligibility H1B important for professionals?

A: Dropbox eligibility H1B is crucial for professionals as it allows for a quicker and more convenient visa renewal process. By meeting the eligibility criteria, H1B holders can avoid lengthy interview waits, ensuring minimal disruption to their employment and travel plans. This efficiency is vital for maintaining job continuity and adhering to work commitments. It also provides peace of mind, knowing that the renewal process is streamlined and less time-consuming.

Election latest: Reform candidate disowns party amid racism row - and backs Tories

Rishi Sunak says Labour would cause "irreversible damage within just 100 days of coming to power" led by Sir Keir Starmer. Meanwhile, Nigel Farage faced questions from Trevor Phillips on racist comments made by a Reform canvasser.

A Reform UK candidate has disowned the party and is backing the Conservatives amid a row over racism.

Liam Booth-Isherwood, who was standing in Erewash, said he is suspending his campaign and backing the Tory candidate Maggie Throup to win the seat.

The deadline for candidate nominations has passed, so he will still appear on the ballot as the Reform candidate.

He said in a statement: "Over the past few weeks, I have been increasingly disillusioned with the behaviour and conduct of Reform.

"Whilst I have campaigned alongside many decent, honest and hard-working people during the course of the general election campaign in Erewash, the reports of widespread racism and sexism in Reform have made clear that there is a significant moral issue within certain elements of the party, and the failure of the party's leadership to not only take this matter seriously, but also to fundamentally address it, has made clear to me that this is no longer a party I want to be associated with.

"As a result, I am announcing my endorsement of the Conservative Party candidate, Maggie Throup, for Erewash. Only she can stop Labour."

Reform UK has been approached for comment.

Here is the full list of candidates standing in Erewash:

  • James Martin Archer, Liberal Democrats
  • Liam Dane Booth-Isherwood (was Reform UK, but has quit party to back Tories)
  • John William Kirby, Independent
  • Brent Poland, Green Party
  • Adam Thompson, Labour Party
  • Maggie Throup, Conservative Party

By Matthew Thompson, political correspondent

The finish line is in sight. Most of us, politicians and journalists alike, have been on the road for weeks.

Batteries are running low. And yet, Sir Ed Davey's enthusiasm for hurling himself into the nearest body of water remains undimmed. The Lib Dems have a strategy, and they're sticking to it.

Which therefore begs the question: is that strategy actually working?

Such things are hard to measure. But polling data, as well as admittedly less scientific chats with the voting public, suggest it isn't exactly doing him any harm.

"I mean, it's entertaining," says Charlotte, watching Sir Ed prance around with a water noodle in the Cheltenham Lido.

"I don't know how much it really affects my political view, but he's likeable. He seems more relatable."

"I suppose it's a bit of fun really," says Joan, another onlooker. I ask her whether she rates the Lib Dems' chances of winning here, and she replies: "I’d like to think so, but I think possibly not."

According to Ipsos, a pollster that tracks party leader popularity, Sir Ed's personal satisfaction ratings have risen seven points since early June. 30% of people are satisfied with him, whilst 35% are not.

If a net satisfaction rating of -5 seems low, it's worth comparing it to others, with Sir Keir Starmer (-19) and Rishi Sunak (-55) lagging far behind.

The Lib Dems as a party also seem to be performing well, with seat predictions uniformly suggesting considerable gains on the 15 MPs they had before the election. Although this could easily be a function of Tory unpopularity as much as enthusiasm for the Lib Dems.

And speaking to journalists in Cheltenham today, a key Lib Dem target, Sir Ed said the party has expanded the number of seats it thinks are winnable, particularly in the South West of England.

His own constituency visits have suggested a similar pattern, with a trend towards visiting seats that would require larger swings to the Lib Dems.

So the mood on the big yellow bus is about as buoyant as Ed Davey in his customary life jacket. The stunts will keep coming.

But as politicians are fond of repeating, there's only one poll that counts. And there are still four days to go.

Both Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer have made various claims about the state of the UK's economy and their plans to change that.

But Sky's economics and data editor Ed Conway has fact-checked one of the Labour leader's pre-election claims about "British people falling behind".

"I'm not comfortable with a trajectory that will soon see Britain overtaken by Poland," Mr Starmer said last year.

So will Poland's economy soon overtake the UK's?

Not quite.

When considering both countries' GDP per capita, Poland's economy is indeed growing at a faster rate than the UK's at the moment.

"If you just assume that those lines continue as they have been for the last 10 years, Poland [will have] overtaken the UK [by 2030]. That is the point that Keir Starmer is making," Ed says.

"But here's the thing. You can't really treat economics like this because fast-growing frontier economies don't always maintain their growth rate. You can't always assume that that's going to continue as it was before."

Forecasts from the International Monetary Fund show that while the gap between both countries is narrowing, the UK is still 8% bigger in terms of GDP per capita than Poland by the end of the decade.

Using the same logic that the Labour leader is, Poland would overtake the US as the world's wealthiest economy by 2050 - a claim Ed calls "ridiculous".

"That is the mathematical trick that's being played in order to make it seem like the UK is falling behind. And it's just one of the tricks that we've seen in this long election campaign."

As we reported earlier, a group of students from the Warwick University Conservatives Association have been condemned for an "utterly abhorrent" video in which they sing a Nazi marching song.

The clip, taken at a chairman's dinner at the Warwick Conservatives Association two weeks ago, shows members singing "Erika" - a song used by the SS and the armed forces of Nazi Germany ( read more on the story here ).

In a statement, the Union of Jewish Students condemned the "blatant and unchallenged support for Nazism".

We asked the Conservative Party for a response to the video - and a spokesman told us that the group "is not affiliated to the Conservative Party".

He added: "There is no place for racism in the Conservative Party and we will always ensure appropriate action is taken against any member who acts in ways that are not in accordance with our values of tolerance and respect."

The spokesman did not say if the party has launched an investigation to determine if anyone seen in the clip is a party member.

Our live poll tracker collates the results of opinion surveys carried out by all the main polling organisations - and allows you to see how the political parties are performing in the run-up to the general election.

With under a week to go, the Tories and Labour have taken a drop, while support for Reform UK and the Liberal Democrats is on the rise.

Since Rishi Sunak called the election, Sky News' Politics Hub has been looking back over memorable moments from campaigns gone by.

From  David Cameron 's football own goal, to an upstart  Nick Clegg  emerging as the unlikely victor from the UK's first televised leaders debate, there were plenty to choose from.

We've collated them all here for you to reminisce on - and a fair warning, given the fine weather we've had this week, one might leave you craving some ice cream…

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is addressing his party's rally in Birmingham now.

Entering the stage to chants of his name - and fireworks - Mr Farage says Reform UK is a party that believes in "having fun and enjoying life".

He explains how at "very short notice" he decided to become leader of the party.

"I simply could not stand aside."

Mr Farage refers to "slippery Sunak", and Sir Keir Starmer, who he says doesn't know how to lead the UK in difficult times.

"Keir Starmer has the charisma of a damp rag," the Reform UK leader says.

He also claims the BBC has "abused its power" as the national broadcaster, to loud applause from those in the room.

Mr Farage says he will campaign to abolish the licence fee.

When the polling stations close at 10pm on 4 July, thousands of ballot counters will be flexing their fingers, ready for what could be a very long night's work.

All the country's votes will be counted - and recounted - by hand.

But what is it like to be one of the people tasked with delivering democracy by dawn?

Sky News spoke to five ballot counters - who between them have worked more than 100 elections - to find out...

Rishi Sunak has said he still believes he will win the general election.

Asked by the BBC whether he thought he would still be prime minister on Friday, he replied: "Yes. I'm fighting very hard and I think people are waking up to the real danger of what a Labour government means."

Polls have almost consistently shown that the Tories are 20 points behind Labour.

Mr Sunak also hit back at what he claimed was a "declinist narrative" when asked whether it was a mistake to change course on net zero.

BBC presenter Laura Kuenssberg pointed out that some people, including the independent climate change committee, believe the UK has lost its status as a leader on the issue.

The broadcaster also said there was "plenty of evidence" that the economic reality of Brexit is that Britain's standing long-term is "more challenging".

Asked whether he thought the shift was a mistake, the prime minister appeared frustrated as he said: "No, and actually you started that question with something that I fundamentally disagree with: 'Because of Brexit, we've lost our standing in the world'."

Told that was not what she had said, he replied: "You said we've lost our standing in the world. That's completely and utterly wrong."

Mr Sunak cited Britain building new nuclear submarines with Australia and the United States, and the negotiation of the Windsor Framework with the EU and support for Ukraine.

He claimed that "people are queuing up to work with us because they respect what we do".

"So I just completely reject that, it's entirely wrong, this kind of declinist narrative that people have of the UK I wholeheartedly reject."

Hats in support of Donald Trump and Union Flag jackets were spotted at the Reform UK rally at the NEC in Birmingham this afternoon.

Dozens of people have gathered to watch Reform UK leader Nigel Farage address the major campaign event, bidding for votes ahead of Thursday's election.
