reasons to visit latvia

If you don’t already have a connection to Latvia , chances are it may not have crossed your mind as a potential destination for your next trip.

But this Baltic nation has more than a few surprises hidden amidst its lush pine forests and architecturally rich cities and towns. Here are ten reasons to add Latvia to your travel wish list.

old-town-riga_750_cs

It’s lost its walls and it isn’t as cutesy as others across Europe, but the old town in Latvia's capital,  Rīga , still has an impressive array of historic buildings, oversized churches and cobbled lanes. Best of all are the many sunny squares filled with beer gardens and street cafes, which in summer thrum with the cosmopolitan clatter of locals and tourists. In winter Old Rīga does its best impression of a scene from a Christmas card – which is fitting for the place where the very first Christmas tree was erected.

Art nouveau architecture

For fans of this theatrical style of architecture and design, there’s simply no better destination than Rīga. The city’s architects got completely carried away with this trend when it swept Europe around the beginning of the 20th century and, despite the wartime devastation, over 750 art nouveau buildings remain. Gaze up as you wander the streets and you’ll see a great many facades decorated with the swirling nature motives, bare-breasted goddesses and mythological beasts typical of the style. If you want to delve deeper, visit the period apartment which serves as the Rīga Art Nouveau Museum . For art nouveau furniture and fabrics, head to the Museum of Decorative Arts & Design .

Beautiful beaches

First-timers to the Baltic are often surprised by just how beautiful the beaches are. Granted, it doesn’t quite have the climate to match, but in the height of summer, the endless golden sands are a great place to let the kids loose with a bucket and spade. Jūrmala , only 20km from the capital, is Latvia’s swankiest beach town, filled with grand wooden holiday houses and large spa hotels. For a more relaxed vibe, try Ventspils in the northeast.

Soviet reminders

If you’re fascinated by the good, the bad and the ugly of the USSR, they can all be found in this former Soviet republic – although the scales are tipped strongly towards the latter two. ‘The good’ is represented by love-them-or-hate-them buildings such as Rīga’s overblown Academy of Science skyscraper (nicknamed Stalin’s wedding cake) and the boxy modernist building housing the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia . Inside, the museum succinctly summarises ‘the bad’ side of Soviet life such as deportations, gulags and purges. As for ‘the ugly’ – you don’t have to wander too far from the well-scrubbed touristy areas to find plenty of the grey, utilitarian buildings that epitomise the words ‘former Soviet’.

Rundāle Palace

If drab buildings were a hallmark of communism, surely excessive ostentation was the equivalent for the Russian Empire. The remarkable  Rundāle Palace , built for the Duke of Courland in the 18th century, is the grandest of its kind in the Baltics, with formal gardens modelled on those at Versailles and 138 rooms within its baroque shell. Inside, the state rooms are slathered with frescoes, moulded plasterwork and gilt trim.

Ancient castles

When German warrior monks pushed into the Baltics in the early 13th century, introducing the locals to the joys of Christianity with the pointy end of their swords, they couldn’t be certain of a warm welcome. Sturdy fortifications were a necessary precaution and castles sprang up throughout the land, many of which are still standing today. Visitors to Cēsis Castle are issued with a candle-powered lantern to explore the darker recesses of its ruined walls. The boxy Livonian Order Castle in Ventspils, by contrast, has been restored and converted into an excellent interactive museum.

Fairytale forests

If you want to get close to the Latvian heart, take a walk through the woods. Forests cover around 45 percent of the country and shelter a diverse range of critters, including a significant population of lynx, beavers and birds of prey. The best places to wander tree-dappled trails are in Ķemeri National Park, a large expanse of forest and bog near Jūrmala, and Gauja National Park, northeast of Rīga. From Sigulda, gateway to Gauja, leafy paths lead between the ruins of three castles and along the Gauja River.

Picturesque towns

Rīga does tend to steal much of the limelight, but more intrepid travellers should consider seeking out some of Latvia’s sleepier centres. Our favourites include pretty little Cēsis, hidden in the forested confines of Gauja National Park, and centred on a large church, ruined castle and ornamental lake. Much further west, Kuldīga boasts Europe’s widest waterfall (249m) – but at a height of only two metres, it’s more scenic than it is dramatic. The best views are from Kuldīga’s old castle grounds, which have been transformed into a leafy park and sculpture garden.

Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre

You might know him as one of America’s most celebrated artists and one of the world’s leading exponents of abstract expressionism, but Mark Rothko (1903-1970) was actually born in Daugavpils in Latvia’s southeast. In 2013 his home town recognised its most famous son with the opening of the Mark Rothko Art Centre ( rothkocenter.com ). Dedicated to art, culture and education, the centre is located in the arsenal building of a historic Russian-built fortress. The Rothko family stumped up some original works which hang alongside an ever-expanding collection of contemporary Latvian art.

Kooky experiences

From spy games in old Soviet coastal forts to horror scenes acted out in darkened basements, Latvia has a particularly pant-wetting range of experience-based attractions on offer. If you’re a glutton for Soviet-style punishment, report to Liepāja’s creepy old military gaol, Karosta Prison , for a few hours of abuse by costumed KGB operatives. For a more intense experience, you can even stay the night in a cell and get acquainted with the authentically awful toilet facilities.

Four Reasons Why Latvia Should Be On Your Travel Radar

11 August, 2021

reasons to visit latvia

Deserted beaches, Riga’s thriving art scene, a boggy landscape (better than it sounds, promise) and architectural feats that paint a fascinating picture of the country’s Soviet past make Latvia a must-visit in our books. Here’s a handful of reasons why this Eastern European country should be on your travel radar.

reasons to visit latvia

W hile While other Eastern European destinations such as the Czech Republic and Hungary have gained traction in recent decades, Latvia has remained a blindspot for travellers. Why? Honestly, we’re clueless. Deserted, sandy beaches crossed by free-roaming horses, the art city of tomorrow, a boggy landscape (more mesmeric than it sounds) and lofty architectural feats that paint a fascinating picture of the country’s tremulous past make it a must-visit in our books. Here’s a handful of reasons why Latvia should be on your travel radar.

A few great reasons why you should be planning a trip to Latvia

reasons to visit latvia

Riga’s biennial is a big deal

If you want any proof that Riga is one of Europe’s most up-and-coming art cities , look no further than its annual biennial of contemporary art, RIBOCA. When it first ran in 2018, it was received with great acclaim, notably for the way in which it sophisticatedly navigated Latvia’s Soviet past. 2020’s biennial was supposed to emanate from a new gallery space in Andrejsala, an old industrial port turned vibrant arts hub, but its opening has been delayed for reasons we need not explain. In the meantime, the culturally curious should pop into Riga Art Space, Putti (a modern jewellers-cum-gallery) and Kim? , a contemporary art centre. RIBOCA has also transformed this year’s programme into a series of online talks and virtual exhibitions; check it out here .

Beautiful bogs (seriously, hear us out)

As hiking trips have become increasingly popular, so too has amateur mountain landscape photography. Dare we say it: panoramic shots taken at the zenith of some European crag are starting to feel a little passé. Just us? For a hike like no other, make tracks for Latvia’s mist-strewn bogs. Don’t be put off by the name, these are luscious, low-lying eco-systems – ambient reserves of swaying long grass, fragmented by mirror-like pools. Dependent on where you choose to hike, there’ll either be a purpose-built walkway suspended over the bog or you’ll need to grab a pair of snowshoes to prevent you from sinking in. We recommend the 8,000-year-old Great Kemeri Bog or following the Cena Moorland footpath.

reasons to visit latvia

Beaches we’d rather keep a secret

It might be just across the Baltic Sea from Stockholm ‘s much-loved archipelago, but Latvia’s beaches don’t get the attention they deserve. Let’s keep it that way. The Jurkalne Bluffs – tree-topped cliffs set over restless sandy shores – skirt Latvia’s west coast and are known for being remarkably untainted by human intervention. Approach via the Pape Nature Reserve to catch sight of the park’s wild horses and auroxen (a type of cattle). If you’re a surfer looking to catch some waves, visit the small coastal town of Pāvilosta, where kites swarm overhead like birds of paradise and fish dinners are served steaming fresh from sandy-bottomed shacks.

reasons to visit latvia

For dystopian Soviet ruins

Some people see architecture in purely aesthetic terms, as something to be observed and photographed (perhaps as a nice background for one’s Instagram feed). Sounds familiar? Maybe Latvia’s ugly architectural history isn’t for you. If, however, you’re someone who’s interested in architecture’s lived experience – how it can be used to enforce ideology and structure society – then you’ll love scouting out the relics of Latvia’s turbulent past. For long-abandoned military bases, visit the Skrunda radar station or the Zeltini nuclear missile base. The Dubulti Railway Station in Jūrmala, now a gallery space, is a striking example of 70s modernism, while the 80s-style TV Tower, Vanšu Suspension Bridge and Riga Congress Centre are impressive testaments to Soviet industrialisation.

1. Old Rīga

Riga has become a top holiday destination for travelers from all over the world. The Old Town is the city’s very heart with impressive historic buildings, oversized churches and cobbled streets. In  the  summer, the Old Town  sees  heavy tourist traffic because of its many sunny squares ,  beer gardens and street cafes. During the winter time ,  the Old Town is full of Christmas markets with sweet-smelling wine, roasted almonds and glazed gingerbread.

Riga’s Art Nouveau architecture  is one of the most unique aspects of this Baltic city. At the turn of the 20th century, when Art Nouveau was at the height of its popularity, Riga just happened to be at the center of an unprecedented financial boom. Riga has more than 400 buildings of Art Nouveau architecture and they are still in great condition. Visit the Art Nouveau Museum to look at its beautiful staircase and a recreation of a true-to-the-era interior or stroll down Alberta or Elizabeta streets for plenty of picture-worthy examples of this century-old style.

2. Latvian Cuisine

If you want to get a glimpse of Latvian culture and traditions and understand them better, you need to get to know the cuisine with all its unique dishes, including kvass, soups and dark rye bread. At the beginning of your trip, some of the dishes may seem unusual or even strange, but if you are open to an unforgettable culinary journey in Latvia, you will want to take all these dishes home with you.

Skābeņu zupa , sometimes called green borscht, is a traditional Latvian sorrel soup. Latvians prepare the soup with beef broth, chopped sorrel leaves, pearl barley, onions, potatoes and lemon juice. Some Latvians also add grated carrots and smoked pork ribs, while hard-boiled eggs and sour cream are typically used as garnishes. Although  skābeņu zupa is usually served warm, some prefer it to be served ice cold on hot summer days. The word skābeņu in the name of this soup means sour and refers to the taste of sorrel.

Karbonade  is pounded pork fried in breadcrumbs. Since pork plays an essential role on Latvian menus, it is one of the country's most popular dishes. Karbonade is typically served with a mound of creamy mushrooms on top and some dill-spiced potatoes on the side.

Aukstā zupa  is a Latvian cold soup with an unusual deep pink color. It is made with beets, cucumbers, dill, kefir, hard-boiled eggs, and milk sausage. Some Latvians enjoy the soup with a dash of vinegar. All the ingredients are mixed together, seasoned with salt and pepper, and then the soup is served cold. It is recommended to serve the soup with a few slices of brown bread or boiled potatoes. Aukstā zupa is popular during the summer, so it is hard to find it in restaurants during wintertime.

Maizes zupa.  A popular way to end a meal in Latvia is to eat a pot of maizes zupa, which is rye bread pudding, a soup-like dessert made of sweetened rye bread, apples, cinnamon, raisins, prunes, cranberries, and whipped cream. The dark rye bread is dried in the oven before being cooked, which gives the pudding a thick, comforting texture.

3. Riga Central Market

aerial view of riga central market buildings

Riga's Central Market is officially the largest market in Europe. The five large former Zeppelin hangars were converted into market halls in 1930. Inside the hangars, you can buy fish, meat, dairy products, bread and vegetables, while CDs and household appliances are sold outside. Exclusive fashion items or souvenirs are rare to find, but a visit to this huge bazaar will give you a feel for local life like perhaps no other attraction can. Negotiating prices is rarely acceptable there, but you can always try your luck. Moreover, you can taste the products on the spot before buying. So if you want to try fresh Latvian products, this is the place to do it. You should definitely try cheese and bread from the region, you won’t regret it!

4. The Perfect SPA Getaway

couple relaxing in a latvian spa in riga

One of the best things about Latvia is cheap and great spas.  ESPA Riga  is one of the internationally recognized five-star SPA centers in the Baltic States. A whole day at ESPA, a luxurious five-star spa, with facials, body scrubs, hour-long massages, pool and sauna sessions, topped off with a 2-course gourmet meal and Champagne. The total price? Just €170. Moreover, you can find even cheaper spa experiences in Latvia, just search for it!

If you want to get to know Latvia even more closely and deeply, take a walk through the forests of Latvia. The country is one of Europe’s greenest nations. The forests in Latvia cover about 45% of the country and are home to a variety of animals such as beavers, birds of prey and lynx. Visit  Kemeri National park  and the  Gauja National park  and enjoy nature at its best.

6. Beautiful Beaches

People who visit the  Baltic Sea  in Latvia for the first time are often surprised by how beautiful the beaches are. The endless golden sandy beaches are a great place to let the kids play with a bucket and spade. Just 20 kilometers from the capital  Riga , is  Jūrmala . This is Latvia's most luxurious beach town and is filled with grand wooden holiday homes and large spa hotels. Jūrmala is also known as the tourist pearl of the country, which hosts many visitors every year. There are huge spas, hotels and many historical buildings in the city. You can come here with your loved ones and enjoy a great vacation. Everything you need for sightseeing, rest and entertainment is available there.

For a more relaxed vibe, visit  Ventspils  in the northeast. Aside from its bustling port, Ventspils is a city of beaches, public art, and an incredible array of activities for children.

7. It’s Affordable

Looking at other European countries, Latvia is a very affordable country. You can easily get a delicious meal for less than €15, rent a car for a week for less than €200, and enjoy a night in a comfortable hotel for only €40. Prices go up in the summer when the tourist traffic increases. Autumn is the perfect time to get cheap deals on flights and accommodation, making your experience even more affordable.

8. Soviet reminders

Inside, the museum summarizes the "bad" side of Soviet life, such as deportations, gulags, and purges. As for the "ugly" side, you can find many of the grey, utilitarian buildings that embody the words "formerly Soviet."

7 Reasons to Visit Riga, Latvia

TripSavvy / Maria Ligaya

Home to Europe's biggest food market, its oldest zoo and its finest collection of art nouveau buildings, Riga is a city of little-known superlatives. Its compact center is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site packed full of architectural treasures and there's plenty to explore on both sides of the river Daugava, including topnotch restaurants and buzzy creative quarters. Here are seven reasons to put this Baltic beauty on your bucket list.

Riga's Old Town Is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

With its narrow cobblestone streets, colorful squares and Medieval-era buildings, Riga's Old Town is full of architectural treasures. It features over 500 buildings that reflect different architectural styles including gothic, baroque, modernism and art nouveau and it's been a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Highlights include Riga cathedral , the largest medieval church in the Baltics; St Peter's church for stunning skyline views from its observation platform; and the Three Brothers, a series of three neighboring houses, each built in a different century. Take a stroll down Rozena Steet, a narrow alley where you can touch the opposite walls with both hands, and stop for a coffee at one of the pavement cafes on Dome Square.

It's Home to Europe's Largest Market

Occupying a series of 5 WWI Zeppelin hangars near the edge of the river Daugava, Riga's Central Market covers a vast floor space and is officially Europe's largest market. More than 3,000 vendors sell an impressive range of fresh local produce here and the stalls are divided neatly into separate hangars selling meat, fish, dairy and vegetables, including an amazing array of sauerkraut and huge jars full of pickles. Grab a seat at Sturitis Pelmeni and refuel with a bowl of hand-rolled meaty dumplings served in a delicious broth with a dollop of sour cream.

Its Art Nouveau Architecture Is Amazing

Over a third of all buildings in Riga are examples of art nouveau architecture and the city is recognized as having the finest collection of art nouveau buildings in Europe. Head to the Alberta iela to marvel at the grand houses that line both sides of the street and look up to take in the colorful facades, intricate stonework and unusual gargoyles. Stroll around the surrounding streets, a designated art nouveau quarter, and pop in to the Art Nouveau Museum to see examples of residential interiors from the era.

You Can Hit The Beach in 20 Minutes

Known as the Pearl of Latvia, Jurmala is a 20-mile strip of fine white sand home to a string of beach towns facing the Gulf of Riga. It's the largest resort in the Baltics and a popular weekend escape with its wooden guesthouses, art nouveau villas and spa hotels. Jump on a train from Riga's central station and you can reach the beach in around 20 minutes. The rail track runs along the coast from Lielupe to Kemeri and round-trip tickets cost around $5. Majori is a good station from which to alight. It has a tourist information center and a pedestrianized main street lined with bars and restaurants. Don't miss cocktails at Simply Beach House , a contemporary glass-fronted beach bar right on the sand with unobstructed views of the Baltic, followed by a performance at Dzintari Concert Hall , an atmospheric gig venue built in the 1930s.

Its City Parks Are Stunning

It's easy to find a peaceful spot in Riga for a stroll or a picnic in a lush park. The closest patch of greenery to the city's Old Town is Bastejkalna (Bastion Hill), a pretty 19th-century park home to romantic water features, flower-filled banks and a winding canal. Further north, Esplanade Park is a grand area flanked by Riga's orthodox Nativity Cathedral with its striking gold domed roof, the National Art Museum and the Latvian Art Academy. Close to the art nouveau quarter, Kronvalda Park sits on former hunting ground and features a dancing fountain, a Chinese pagoda and rollerskating tracks.

It Has an Exciting Food Scene

While there are plenty of cozy restaurants serving hearty Latvian dishes like pork knuckle and meatball soup , Riga is home to a growing number of contemporary restaurants helmed by top chefs. Highlights include Restaurant 3 , an intimate spot in the Old Town with a focus on natural ingredients sourced from the forest (sorrel soup, pine ice cream, wild garlic chocolate cake), Fabrikas Restorans for contemporary cuisine in a converted factory on the banks of the river Daugava, and 3 Chefs for seasonal dishes served from a buzzy open kitchen.

It's Home to Multiple Creative Quarters

Beyond Riga's cobblestone streets and historic sights you'll find a number of cool pockets of land that are now designated Creative Quarters. Behind the Central Market, the Spikeri Quarter is made up of a series of renovated warehouses home to an art gallery, a concert hall and an outdoor square that hosts regular flea markets and open-air cinema screenings. Across the river from the Old Town, Kalnciems Quarter is an area of beautiful 19th-century wooden houses that have been converted into cafes, restaurants and shops selling arts and crafts. Or head northeast of the city to stroll along colorful Miera Iela (Peace Street) to browse its galleries and its vintage clothes stores before hanging out in a hip cafe.

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Latvia

Old colorful buildings in the charming city of Riga, the capital of Latvia

1. Explore Riga

Riga is the capital of Latvia. It has Romantic, Gothic, and Baroque architecture dating back to when the city was a powerful medieval port, and the city also has over 800 Art Nouveau buildings, an Open-Air Museum, and a massive central market. The medieval Old Town is pedestrian only and is full of shops and restaurants. Nearby you’ll find the trendy Livu Square, which is the best spot to experience nightlife at the bars and clubs. It’s a lively, fun capital!

2. Relax in a traditional sauna

Like much of northern Europe, saunas in Latvia are an important part of the culture. There is a firm belief that the sauna practice purifies the body and spirit. Saunas are called pirts in Latvia, and they are traditionally wet saunas. By pouring water over hot stones, steam is created. Many of the saunas in Latvia will have a pirtniek , or sauna expert, who has undergone training to guide you through the sauna experience. You will rotate between the heat of the sauna and a cold pool as well as get swatted by switches of juniper or birch (to remove dead skin cells). Prices range from 15-35 EUR.

3. Go hiking in Gauja National Park

Located in the northeast and spanning almost 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles), Gauja National Park is one of the most pristine examples of Latvian nature. Come here to hike, bike, and enjoy the views along the Gauja River. The 10,000-year-old Gutman’s Cave can be found here too. Thrill seekers can try bungee jumping from a cable car or zipline through the forests, but if you’re in search of a more relaxing adventure consider renting a canoe and floating down the Gauja River. Admission is free.

4. See castles in Sigulda

This region is considered “the Switzerland of Latvia.” In addition to the stunning landscape, there are several historic buildings here to explore, including the 19th century Krimulda Manor, Sigulda Castle, and the ruins of the 14th-century Krimulda Castle. In just a few minutes, you can drive north of Sigulda to the 11th century Turaida Castle, which is one of the most popular castles in Latvia. Built from beautiful red bricks, the castle features a tall cylinder-shaped tower surrounded by many other buildings. All of the structures have been converted into museums and galleries, such as the Folk Song Garden, which is full of sculptures of Latvian heroes and historical figures.

5. Visit the Rundale Palace

Built in two periods (1736-1740 and 1764-1768), this is like the Versailles of Latvia and was used for extravagant social events. It was originally intended to be a summer residence for Duke of Courland Ernst Johann von Biron, but construction froze when Biron was temporarily exiled. He finally finished his dream palace upon his return to Latvia and spent the rest of his life enjoying the beautiful estate. After his death, the property changed hands several times and was once given as a gift from Russia’s Catherine the Great to her lover’s brother. The Baroque and Rococo building is lavish and ornate with massive gardens and stately rooms. Admission is 13 EUR for the interior and gardens.

Other Things to See and Do in Latvia

1. visit jurmala.

Just a short 20-minute drive from Riga, the seaside town of Jurmala offers laid-back beaches and vibrant nightlife. Be sure to visit Dzintari forest park (which is home to 200-year-old trees and has several walking paths) and Mr. Morberg’s house, a 19th-century Neo-Gothic wooden house that looks and feels like a fairy-tale palace (the interior is both ornate and super colorful).

2. Go skiing

Cross-country skiing is one of the more popular winter pastimes in the country. For downhill skiing, there are slopes all across the country. Some suggested resorts and slopes to check out are Ozolkalns (Cesis), Victory Park (Riga), Vanagkalns (Cesis), and Milzkalns (Tukum). Expect to pay 10 EUR for a two-hour cross-country ski rental and 15 EUR for a lift pass (it’s one of the cheapest places to ski in Europe).

3. Explore Ventspils

Situated on the coast of the Baltic Sea, this city is a massive port and important commercial hub. If you aren’t into watching the ships come and go, head out to the town’s beaches where you can swim and sunbathe. There is a separate section for surfing (and kitesurfing) and even one for nudists! If you’re traveling with kids, there’s a waterpark in town too.

4. Visit Latgale

The region of Latgale sits in the eastern part of the country and is known as the Land of Blue Lakes thanks to its many picturesque lakes. The region has its own dialect and is perfect for camping, hiking, and enjoying the water. The area is also known for its delicious cheeses since there are tons of small farms here. You can base yourself in Daugavpils, the region’s largest city, or stay in some of the many cozy cottages or B&Bs around the countryside. Note: This region is best explored by car since public transportation is limited.

5. See the Corner House

The Corner House is the former headquarters of the Latvian KGB (the secret police). Situated in an Art Nouveau building in the center of Riga, today it serves as a dark reminder of the brutal tactics they employed during the Russian occupation (which lasted from 1940-1991). It’s where political prisoners would be brought for torture and interrogation. Admission is by donation and guided tours are available for 10 EUR. It’s sobering but informative.

6. Visit the Seaside Open-Air Museum

Located in Ventspils, the Seaside Open-Air Museum is dedicated to Latvia’s history, with a special focus on fishing and boating. There is a whole section dedicated to teaching traditional Latvian fishing techniques practiced in the region from the 18th century onwards, complete with replica fisherman’s houses, farmhouses, smokehouses, and local craftsmen offering visitors a display of their traditional crafting skills in action. Admission is 2 EUR.

7. Visit 1920s Latvia

Built in 2004 as the film set for the historical drama Defenders of Riga , the complex is a complete replica of 1920s Latvia (the film depicts Latvia in 1919 during its war for independence). Set on 370 acres of land, it includes a small town, a ‘Riga-esque’ city, and traditional Latvian farmland. When it isn’t in use as a film set, it is possible to visit the set and is a neat day trip for movie buffs.

8. Sleep in a prison

Located on the west coast in Liepaja, Karosta Prison is no longer in use (it shut down in 1997) but has reopened to tourists. It’s the only military prison in Europe open to tourists. You can take a day tour or book the full overnight experience. Ghost Hunters International once called Karosta Prison “the most haunted place in the world” so be prepared for a spooky stay. Tours are 7 EUR while overnight rooms start at 24 EUR (breakfast is an additional 5 EUR).

9. See a ballet or opera

The Latvian National Opera is home to both the Latvian National Opera and the Latvian National Ballet company. There are a variety of different performances held here including classical and contemporary dance, opera, traditional Latvian folk stories, and children’s plays. With over 200 performances each season, there is plenty to choose from. Tickets for performances start at just 5 EUR.

10. Celebrate Midsummer

In Latvia, the most important holiday is midsummer (the summer solstice). In the Latvian tradition, people stay awake for the whole night so they can greet the rising sun. There are public events across the country where they light bonfires, eat, drink, and dance all night. However, Midsummer in Latvia isn’t actually celebrated on solstice day — it’s always celebrated on the same day each year (June 23rd).

11. Get lost in Europe’s biggest market

The central market in Riga is a UNESCO Heritage Site and is the largest market in Europe. Opened in 1930, between 80,000-100,000 people visit each day. In addition to the standard fresh produce, fish, and meat, there are food stalls, souvenir stands, bars, and everything in between. Come here with an appetite and spend some time wandering the stalls and sampling all the offerings.

12. Stroll along the Great Kemeri Bog Boardwalk

Located in Kemeri National Park just outside of Jurmala, the Great Kemeri Bog Boardwalk lets you explore the inaccessible landscape of the marshland park. Established in 1997, the park offers a 3.7km loop that takes about 90 minutes to walk. There are all kinds of bogs, marshes, and lakes dotting the landscape as well as geese and cranes. Admission to the park is free.

13. Visit the House of the Black Heads

Now a museum, this 14th-century building was built in the old town of Riga for the Brotherhood of Blackheads. The brotherhood was a guild for unmarried merchants, shipowners, and foreigners in Riga. The building had major works done in the early 17th century and it was extensively updated after it was bombed and destroyed in 1941. There are all kinds of artifacts here (pottery, paintings, silverware, etc.) and the space is often used for concerts and events. Admission is 8 or 9 EUR with a cup of coffee or a glass of sparkling wine respectively.

14. Explore Cesis Castle

The foundations of Cesis Castle were laid 800 years ago and the castle has had a violent history since that time, including when it was besieged by Ivan the Terrible’s army in 1577. The castle fell into disuse after the Great Northern War (1700-1721) but remains one of the most iconic and best-preserved medieval castles in Latvia. Admission varies by season so check the website for details. Guided tours in English cost 35 EUR. Cesis is just northeast of Riga.

Latvia Travel Costs

A towering castle in the middle of a forest in Latvia

Accommodation – Hostel dorms start at 15 EUR per night for a dorm with 8 beds or more. For a smaller dorm with 4-6 beds, expect to pay around 26 EUR. Free Wi-Fi is standard, as are self-catering facilities. Private rooms in hostels are less common and cost between 20-60 EUR. Prices are fairly stable between the high and low seasons.

For anyone traveling with a tent, camping is available around the country. Moreover, wild camping is legal as long as you are on government land. If you do want to stay in a campground, basic plots without electricity access at 7.50 EUR.

Budget hotels and guesthouses start at 30 EUR per night. Free Wi-Fi, coffee/tea maker, TV, A/C, and self-catering facilities are all common.

Airbnb is available around the country with private rooms starting at 15 EUR per night but averaging around 25-40 EUR. For an entire home or apartment, expect to pay 50-80 EUR (prices can be even higher in the summer).

Food – Much like their Baltic and Scandinavian neighbors, Latvian cuisine emphasizes meat, potatoes, and seafood. Dishes like cabbage soup, mashed peas and pork, and pelmeni (Russian ravioli) are some common favorites found at most restaurants. Pelekie zirni ar speki is the national dish, a stew made from peas, onions, and diced speck.

Cheap street food (like hot dogs and sausages) costs around 3-5 EUR while a meal at an inexpensive restaurant costs 7 EUR.

Many restaurants offer a “business lunch,” a fixed-price menu that consists of a starter, main course, and drink. Also known locally as “complex lunches,” prices for these meals vary from 5-8 EUR.

A three-course meal at a mid-range restaurant costs 25 EUR, while Chinese, Indian, or Thai (which can only be found in the larger cities) are usually under 10 EUR for a main dish.

Fast food (think McDonald’s) costs 7 EUR for a combo meal. A beer or latte costs 3-4 EUR. Bottled water is around 1 EUR.

If you are planning to cook your own food, a week’s worth of groceries costs 40-50 EUR for basic staples like vegetables, pasta, rice, and some meat or seafood.

Backpacking Latvia Suggested Budgets

On a backpacker budget of 45 EUR per day, you can stay in a hostel dorm, cook all of your meals, limit your drinking, take public transportation to get around, and do mostly free activities like hiking and enjoying the beaches. If you plan on drinking, add 5-10 EUR to your daily budget.

On a mid-range budget of 110 EUR per day, you can stay in an Airbnb, eat out for most of your meals, enjoy a few drinks, take the occasional taxi to get around, and do more paid activities like visiting museums and castles or going kayaking.

On a “luxury” budget of 215 EUR or more per day, you can stay in a hotel, eat out anywhere you want, drink more, rent a car to get around, and do whatever tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in EUR.

Latvia Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Latvia is a pretty affordable place to visit. You’ll be hard-pressed to spend a lot of money here unless you are going for fancy meals and accommodation. That said, it never hurts to save even more money! Here are some of the best ways to save money during your visit:

  • Take a free walking tour – Riga offers a handful of free walking tours. They’re a great way to get familiar with the city and the culture. Just be sure to tip your guide!
  • Take the bus – FlixBus is budget-friendly way to get around the country. They have Wi-Fi, electrical outlets, and decent enough seats for overnight and long-haul bus journeys.
  • Cook your own meals – Some hostels here don’t include kitchen facilities, so if you want to save money make sure you book accommodation that does. Buying your own groceries may not be as glamorous as going out to eat, but it definitely saves you money!
  • Wild camp – If you really want to save money, bring a tent and wild camp. It’s legal, safe, and free!
  • Stay with a local – Staying with a local via Couchsurfing is a great way to not only save money but you get to meet a knowledgeable local who can share their insider tips and advice.
  • Walk everywhere – All of the major cities in Latvia are quite walkable, so skip the public transportation if you want to save a few extra euros.
  • Enjoy the free spaces – There are plenty of free parks as well as many free hiking trails around the country. Save your budget and enjoy the outdoors!
  • Bring a water bottle – The tap water here is safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle to save money and reduce your plastic use. LifeStraw is my go-to brand as their bottles have built-in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe.

Where to Stay in Latvia

There are hostels in most of Latvia’s larger cities. Here are some of my suggested places to stay:

  • Cinnamon Sally Backpackers Hostel (Riga)
  • The Naughty Squirrel Backpackers Hostel (Riga)
  • Tree House Hostel (Riga)
  • Central Hostel Jelgava (Jelgava)

How to Get Around Latvia

A bright and sunny day over the skyline of Riga, the capital of Latvia

Public transportation – None of the Latvian cities have subways or elevated transport lines which means public transport can often be slow. In fact, public transportation outside of Riga is limited.

Prices vary by city but expect to pay around 1.15 EUR for a standard adult ticket if you pay in advance. You can buy tickets onboard but they cost more (around 2 EUR).

In Riga, you can buy a 24-hour pass for 5 EUR, a 3-day pass for 10 EUR, or a 5-day pass for 15 EUR.

Taxi – Prices start around 2 EUR and cost around 0.70 EUR for every kilometer. Skip the taxis if you can — they add up fast!

Bus – If you are traveling outside of Riga’s suburban railway lines then taking a bus is the best option. Expect to pay 10 EUR or less for most trips. Riga to Ventspils, for example, takes three hours and costs about 10 EUR.

If you are continuing to neighboring countries, the bus is the most common mode of transport. On average, a bus from Latvia to Lithuania costs around 12 EUR. The four-hour ride from Riga to Tallinn, Estonia costs about the same.

Train – Train travel is limited and mostly centers around places you can do as day trips from Riga. Some of the most popular places you can travel from Riga to by train are Jurmala, Gauja National Park, and Daugavpils. Anywhere further afield is better accessed by bus. You can pretty much travel anywhere in the country for under 20 EUR.

Flying – There are no budget airlines operating domestically around Latvia (it’s a small country) but you can get cheap flights in and out of Riga with Air Baltic.

Car rental – I would not advise inexperienced drivers to drive in Latvia. It’s known to be one of the most dangerous countries in Europe to drive in. However, if you are driving you need an International Driving Permit (IDP). Car rentals can be as low as 15 EUR per day for a multi-day rental.

For the best car rental prices, use Discover Cars .

When to Go to Latvia

The best time to visit Latvia is from April through September. The summer months of July and August are the warmest (and make up the country’s busy season). Expect temperatures around 22°C (71°F).

During autumn, the shoreline, wetlands, and forests come alive with bird migrations. The national parks are particularly beautiful at this time of year with the changing colors, and it’s nice and cool for hiking.

Temperatures drop below freezing in the winter, so unless you’re coming for winter sports, I’d skip a winter visit to Latvia.

Be warned though, no matter what time of year you choose to visit, showers are common and unpredictable. Make sure you always have a raincoat handy.

How to Stay Safe in Latvia

Latvia is a safe country to travel. They have a low crime rate and even pickpocketing in the cities isn’t that common. That said, it’s always a good idea to keep your wits about you, keep your valuables secure, and avoid flashing things like jewelry around in public.

One danger you do need to be aware of in Latvia is when traveling by road. Latvia is notorious for bad driving — even crossing the street can be dangerous. Take extra caution if you rent a car. Additionally, don’t leave any valuables in your car overnight or when out hiking. Theft is rare, but it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.).

While scams here are rare, you can read about common travel scams to avoid .

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance protects you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

  • Not only is the historic centre of Latvia ’s capital Riga a UNESCO world heritage site , but with more than 800 Art Nouveau buildings, Riga (not Barcelona) is also considered the Art Nouveau capital of Europe .
  • Only a short trip outside of Riga , grand wooden seaside homes and ancient Teutonic castles are just waiting to be explored.
  • Latvia has four outstanding National Parks (two of which feature in our itinerary). Sounds wonderful? Well, it is.

latvia three brothers

Dating from the 15th to the 17th centuries, the Three Brothers are the oldest complex of dwelling houses in Riga

Below is a map of the recommended accommodation, points of interest, eateries and transport terminals/stops mentioned in this article.

Our itinerary assumes that you travel to Riga overland from Lithuania (or arrive in Riga by plane). If you don’t have time to continue your travels to Estonia , your closest airport to return home is Riga (88 kilometres / approximately 2.5 hours southwest of Cēsis).

To organise your mode of transport between the three stops (and for your day trip from Riga ) check out the transport section in our Baltics article .

But first, let’s talk about what there is to see and do…

Day 1 – Riga

As with Lithuania ‘s capital Vilnius and Estonia ‘s capital Tallinn , we recommend starting your first day in Riga with a free walking tour around the Old Town. The tour starts at 1000h in front of St Peter’s Church and takes just under 2 hours.

For lunch, head to Salve in the Old Town, to one of the Lido Bistro outlets or Riga ’s Central Market in the old Zeppelin hangars opposite the bus station where you arrived. That market alone would be a reason for us to move to Riga .

If we lived in Riga the Central Market would be our favourite hangout

If you enjoyed the Old Town walking tour and have a soft spot for architecture, Riga Free Tours now also offers a walking tour that takes you around Riga’s Art Nouveau treasures .

If you’re more into art than architecture, you may want to check out the Latvian National Museum of Art.

And if you’re more into history (especially if you’ve missed the Museum in Vilnius ), you may want to join the guided tours

  • at the Museum of Latvia’s Occupation (Raiņa Bulvāris 7) or
  • at The Corner House (Brīvības Iela 61) – the former KGB building, which houses an exhibition about the KGB operations in Latvia .

For more details, check out the museum’s website .

Finish off your first day with innovative cocktails, delicious modern Korean food and sunset views over Riga from the Skyline Bar at the Riga Radisson Blu Hotel . Or if you’re in town on a Friday, head to Riga’s Cathedral to join the weekly organ concert at 1900h.

Visiting the Baltic countries cost us on average EUR45.17/USD50.54 per person per day. Check out our individual country costs here:

Day 2 – Jūrmala and Ķemeri National Park

On your second day in Riga , we suggest you head out of the city. All the below destinations can be reached by public transport. Alternatively, you can hire a car for the day.

First up, head to the historic seaside resort of Jūrmala , 40 kilometres / approximately 30 minutes west of Riga . The main sights are in the suburb of Majori, so if you take the minibus or train alight there.

If you drive and visit between 01 April and 30 September, you need to buy an entry pass (EUR2 per vehicle). Ticket machines are at the town entrance and in Majori itself. In turn, all municipal parking lots are free of charge. The quaint seaside town is easy to explore on foot .

jurmala beach latvia

For a taste of the Baltic Sea near Riga , head to Jūrmala

Your next stop is the Ķemeri National Park (11 kilometres/20 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bus/train). The National Park offers many flat trails and boardwalks. So before you go, check out the park map online or head into the Tourist Information Centre opposite the train station in Majori. Also, make sure you bring insect repellent.

If you didn’t hire a car , take the minibus or train to the township of Kemeri. If the distances don’t bother you, you can, of course, walk all trails from the train station/bus stop. Alternatively, you can hire bicycles in Kemeri (right at the station – the shop is called Velo Noma ) or in Majori – including electric bikes (for example, at ABC Grupa or ZLX ). Be aware though: The ride from Majori to Kemeri, while flat, is just over 20 kilometres one-way (or 40 kilometres return).

As for trails, our recommendations are

  • Great Ķemeri Bog Boardwalk : The larger boardwalk loop is about 3.5 kilometres from the parking lot (or 11 kilometres return from Kemeri train station)
  • Lake Sloka Path : From the car park at Lake Sloka, the circular route is approximately three kilometres. If you are walking or cycling, it is approximately five kilometres from Kemeri train station to the parking lot at Lake Sloka (or ten kilometres return).

If you have time for a little detour after finishing the Lake Sloka Path you can add the Black Alder Swamp Boardwalk , which starts at Meža Māja, approximately three kilometres from Kemeri train station (or alight at the bus stop Meža Māja). If you walk the Lake Sloka Path, you pass Meža Māja anyway. The loop itself is less than one kilometre long.

  • To try Latvian cuisine at reasonable prices, head to one of the Lido Bistros in Riga . For traditional dishes in a more refined environment, check out Salve in Riga ’s Old Town.
  • For delicious modern Korean dishes and sunset views over Riga visit the Skyline Bar at the Radisson Blu Hotel.
  • While staying in the historic Hotel Sigulda might be a bit too expensive, the restaurant serves delicious food made from fresh local produce.

The Gauja National Park is just over an hour by train or bus east of Riga . While you could visit Sigulda or Cēsis (the two main vantage points for the park) on a day trip from Riga , we recommend you stay in either or both to really experience the National Park and all it has to offer. You can hike, kayak or bike past colourful sandstone formations and enjoy beautiful vistas over the Gauja River valley.

You can hire bikes and boats in both Sigulda and Cēsis:

  • Sigulda: There is a bike rental shop opposite the train station and an e-bike rental shop by the cable car station. A number of companies also offer boat rentals .
  • Bike rental in Cēsis is available near the entrance to the Cēsis Castle and Museum. Boat rental in Cēsis is offered by Žagarkalns, approximately 6 kilometres west of the township.

A hike in Latvia 's first and largest National Park doesn't cost you a cent

The Gauja National Park not only offers a ton of options for nature lovers. You can also bungee jump from the cable car across the Gauja river in Sigulda or zip line on the cable car’s cableway.

You can also visit the old castles of the Livonian Order (Teutonic Knights who settled in the area at the beginning of the 13th century). Our favourite was the Cēsis Castle and Museum :

  • With the help of old-fashioned lanterns, you are free to explore the castle’s western tower by yourself.
  • From May to September, workshops and a kitchen garden are staffed by locals dressed in medieval clothing who explain medieval crafts (for example, woodblock printing by the very passionate Viesturs Aboltins or straw hat making), traditional games and armour.
  • Finally, a sizeable and super interesting museum awaits in the Manor House, explaining the history of the castle, of Cēsis and Latvia (make sure you use the leaflets provided in additional languages).

We spent several hours in the castle complex.

Why Beautiful Latvia Should Be On Your Radar: 8 Irresistible Reasons

reasons to visit latvia

Last Updated on the 16th of April, 2024

From great lighthouses and wooden towers to quiet beaches and impossibly gorgeous panoramas, Latvia captivates and inspires, placing it as one of Europe’s best areas for outdoor exploration.

Yet, not many people have Latvia on their travel list.

And that’s fine.

But after reading these 8 reasons, I think you’ll be persuaded otherwise.

Last summer we devoted two weeks to travelling around our home country – we loved exploring the history and the landscapes of Latvia and we loved getting closer to its heritage and folklore.

While there are hundreds of reasons to explore Latvia, these eight will serve as a perfect introduction to the unspoiled beauty of Latvia. You can see them all on one epic road trip or experience them as they change through the seasons.

Either way, you will fall in love with this country .

reasons to visit latvia

#1. Pretty cobbled streets of Riga

Riga is the capital city of Latvia with a beautiful old town that’s decorated with flowers during the summer and lays under a blanket of snow during the winter months.

Gifted with incredible Art Nouveau architecture and pointy church towers, Riga takes a big part in Latvia’s tourism. Riga’s Old Town – the historical centre of the city – and central areas are reasonably compact.

Riga has several fantastic attractions to keep travellers busy during their stay in the Latvian capital. While you can definitely see the main tourist attractions in 1 or 2 days in Riga, spending 3 days in Riga will allow you to make the most of everything that the Latvian capital has to offer.

Some of the places worth visiting in Riga:

  • House of Blackheads  | Originally built in 1334 for the Brotherhood of Blackheads and completely restored after being bombed in WWII, the magnificent facade of House of Blackheads combines architectural and artistic values of different styles and different centuries.
  • Riga Castle  is an important feature of Old Town Riga. A museum and the residence of the president of Latvia, it stands out for its prime location and interesting combination of architectural details.
  • Saint Peter’s Church  | The best views of Riga are from the top of the 800-year-old St. Peters Church, located at Reformacijas laukums. From Riga’s tallest church, you can see a view of Old Town, the modern part of the city, Riga Bay and the Daugava River.

#2. Beautiful coastal scenery

As in the case of many destinations these days, travel to Latvia is mostly associated with its gorgeous capital city Riga. Yet, look behind the scenes and you will discover something surprising such as vast and secluded white sand beaches which remain pristine and not overdeveloped.

Latvia is well endowed with sandy beaches as they follow its entire shoreline. Here you’ve got more than 500 kilometres of untamed coastline shaped by fishing villages selling smoked fish, towering sand dunes and pine trees gently swaying in the wind.

The beaches get busy during hot summer days especially the ones near Riga and in other bigger cities like Liepaja and Ventspils, but, most of the beaches in Latvia are tranquil and secluded.

Keep in mind that you will have to cross beautiful lush pine forests to get to the beach in Latvia most of the time. In many places, the pines reach impressive sizes and are close to 200 years old.

If you end up exploring the coast, don’t forget to stop by one of its many fishermen’s villages. The most popular ones close to Riga are Lapmezciems, Ragaciems, and Klapkalnciems on the western coast of the Gulf of Riga. Sauklrasti, Tuja, and Salacgriva towns and many smaller villages on the eastern coast of the Gulf are popular places for locals.

#3. Bogs and moorlands

One of the most unusual things to do in Latvia – albeit beautiful and rewarding – is to visit one of its bogs. Bogs are a big part of Latvia’s identity in the same way that mountains are for Switzerland and beaches are for Spain. Latvia’s bogs are unique ecological territories that visitors can learn from and enjoy.

Many have wooden footpaths and watchtowers through the bog so you can see the bog without disturbing the squishy ground underfoot or sinking in yourself.

About an hour’s drive outside Rīga brings you to the Kemeri National Park near the coastal town of Jūrmala. Here you’ll find a wild wetland forest, shallow coastal lakes, dunes and the Great Kemeri Bog. The park is home to many rare and endangered species like wolves, lynxes, otters, black storks, sea eagles and many migrating birds.

In addition to animals, a huge diversity of unique plants like orchids, mosses, lichens, and carnivorous flycatchers also grow protected in this place.

If you are a bird-watcher, you would love Kemeri National Park, because Latvia is on the spring and autumn migration route of many bird species. You can spot many rare bird species on the beaches in Latvia.

#4. Ancient Latvian Castles

Latvia’s castles and manor houses are some of its most treasured attractions. Seeing them is one of the best things you can do in Latvia as many of them serve as historical landmarks and each of them is unique in its style, architecture and cultural history.

Most Latvian castles were built in the Middle Ages and while many of them have debilitated over time, a good few of them are still standing and open to visitors.

  • Cesvaine Palace | Cesvaine Palace is another rare historical monument of Latvia. The palace was built during the period of 1890 to 1897 and is an outstanding example of eclecticism combined with Gothic, Art Nouveau and Romanesque styles. The Cesvaine Castle Park is home to about 70 different species of trees and shrubs
  • Turaida Castle | located in Gauja National Park is part of the Turaida Museum Reserve . This castle was built in 1214 for the Albert of Riga. Earlier there used to be a wooden castle where the Liv Leader of Turaida used to reside. The wooden castle was deconstructed to build the stone castle of Turaida.
  • Cesis  Castle | is one of Latvia’s most famous castles, with an entire calendar of events surrounding it and the town by the same name. The castle was built some 800 years ago, during the 13th century and the town of Cesis budded around this castle soon after. The castle has a high tower which you can climb up to get an exquisite view of the Cesis Old Town.
  • Rundales Castle | is one of the two major baroque castles, which was built for the Duke of Courland. Located in the southern part of Latvia, amid the beautiful Zemgale Plains, Rundales Castle showcases magnificent Baroque and Rococo architecture.

#5. Europe’s Widest Waterfall

The Venta Rapid is the widest waterfall in Europe, spanning a width of 650-820 feet (200-250 meters) depending on the season. However, if you’re picturing something along the lines of Niagara Falls or Iguazu Falls you will be very surprised.

The height of the waterfall is only about 6 feet (less than 2 meters). Visitors can enjoy walking along the width of the waterfall and even bathing in it. In spring and autumn, when spawning fish migrate upstream, you can watch from the banks as flying fish try to jump over the rapid.

This waterfall is located in Kuldiga town. Or rather – Kuldiga town is located at this waterfall because ships had to disembark at this natural barrage and due to this here appeared a settlement.

To enjoy the site of the waterfall. there are, in fact, two ways to do so. First is the historical brick bridge and the second one is a walking path that takes you along the river bank.

#6. Latvian Cities and Towns

From Liepaja to Vetspils on Latvia’s windy west coast to the perfectly preserved wonder of Kuldiga, the world-class beach resort of Jurmala, and the rarely visited delights of Latgale, Latvia is so much more than a nature lover’s dream of forest, beach, and wildlife.

As well as the incredible Latvian capital, there are dozens of gorgeous towns and cities , too – some of which you might never have heard of – deserving of a visit.

Whether you go independently by car, book a local guide, or take public transportation, due to Latvia’s size, its cities and towns are easy to get to and explore.

You may be wondering what Latvian cities to include in your travel itinerary. So, here are a few you could start with:

  • Kuldíga | If you go towards the Baltic Sea, you will eventually come upon Kuldiga , which is known throughout the country for its beautiful architecture. In it, you’ll find the Old Town, built up to join the Kuldiga Castle in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is also known for the widest natural rapids in Europe the Ventas Rumba – where fishermen used to catch salmon by throwing themselves up in the air.
  • Kandava | First mentioned in writing in 1230, Kandava is a city where it’s easy to feel the history of the place as you meander around the old centre. While the fort that it was built around has now been reduced to ruins, there is a tower that remains from the 14th century. The Old Town Square and adjoining Promenade, where you can easily find comfortable cafes and craftsmen selling their wares, are the best places to go to feel the spirit of the city.
  • Cesis | A town in central Latvia not to be missed is Cesis. Originally planned and built in the 13th century, Cesis is full of important Latvian history and fascinating historical sites. The Cesis Castle, which has had many owners over the centuries, is now the site of the Cesis History Museum. You can also visit the castle park, a relaxing place to wander around and enjoy the outdoors.

#7. Latvian Food

Food plays an integral role in our lives and rightfully so: the food we eat is intricately intertwined with our culture. You can learn a lot about a particular culture by exploring its food. In fact, it may be difficult to fully define a culture without a nod to its cuisine.

Rife with wholesome dishes, organic vegetables, and breathtakingly fresh seafood,  Latvian food  is one of the Baltic’s best-kept secrets. Given that Food is often used as a means of retaining their cultural identity , anyone visiting Latvia should try it to eat like a local.

  • Potatoes pancakes | They are made with a combination of grated potatoes, eggs, and flour, seasoned only with salt and pepper. Fried until golden brown, kartupeļu pankūkas are traditionally served with sour cream and lingonberry sauce.
  • Sorrel soup | is a traditional Latvian sorrel soup. It is made with beef stock, chopped sorrel leaves, pearl barley, onions, potatoes, and lemon juice.
  • Rupjmaize  is a traditional Latvian bread consisting of whole-grain rye, baked in a hearth oven and shaped into an elongated loaf. It has a unique flavour that is both sour and sweet.
  • Buckwheat | griķi is the Latvian name for the pseudocereal known as buckwheat. One of the staple ingredients of traditional Latvian cuisine, griķi is also the name of this simple dish consisting of buckwheat groats that have been cooked in water with butter and salt before being enjoyed on their own or as an accompaniment to various Latvian specialities.

#8 The Great Outdoors

A large proportion of Latvia’s landscape is covered in forest, and about 20% of that land (plus several marine areas) is protected.

Latvia is home to four national parks, seven protected marine zones, 24 micro reserves, 40+ nature parks and over 500 nature reserves and nature monuments combined!  This means that it is one of the greenest and most well-looked-after countries in Europe and that it has a regular spot at or near the top of the Environmental Performance Index.

In addition to green spaces, Latvia is a watery wonderland that is thought to have as many as 12,000 rivers, 3,000 small lakes   and many beautiful waterfalls. This means that there are plenty of opportunities to get out on the water, be that kayaking, canoeing or even swimming. It makes Latvia an excellent destination for hiking and exploring nature, and there’s nothing more peaceful than taking a walk around a lake!

As such, Latvia is a bucket list must for those who love the great outdoors.

It does look like a fascinating country and quite beautiful, too, Aiva. It sounds like it would be a driving holiday and need a bit of planning. I presume the transport links are good. You must miss it very much sometimes.

Hi, Jo 🙂 Yes, I miss it very much, especially in wintertime when the country is under a heavy blanket of snow. When in Latvia, you can travel by public transport since they are reasonably priced and the trains and buses connect the major cities and towns of the country. Big towns like Riga and Daugavpils have a proper public transportation system which comprises of trolleybuses, trams, and buses.

But we highly recommend renting a car to go on a trip around Latvia. This way, you’re the one in charge. You can choose your own route, make spontaneous decisions and change your plans on a whim. This is great if you want the freedom to explore without being tied to a specific itinerary. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

it is beautiful

I very much enjoyed our four day trip to Latvia a few years ago. We took the train to Majori for a pleasant boardwalk along the beach and also the Ethnographic Museum was lovely too even though we had travelled out of season. Your post provides lots more ideas of further travel in Latvia to consider for a future trip. Thanks for sharing Aiva.

I am glad to hear you had a great time in Latvia. Surrounded by Russia, Lithuania, Estonia and Belarus, Latvia has a pretty incredible mix of influences and spots that are great to see during a longer trip around the country.

For instance, it has some wonderful towns and villages and a pretty stunning coastline (that you might not think about when you first think of Latvia). After all, it’s right on the Baltic Sea which is great to explore in the summer months.

The Ethnographic Museum is a beautiful open-air museum in a beautiful setting and can be easily reached from Riga. The grounds are extensive and there are regular arts and crafts fairs with hundreds of artisans selling their craftwork. Definitely, a must when visiting Latvia.

Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

I love all the reasons you mentioned Aiva – castles, coastal views, that delicious food (and really photogenic it seems) … I can absolutely understand why Latvia is a great travel destination!

Thanks so much, Corna 🙂 Latvia’s turbulent history, rich culture and beautiful nature make it the perfect vacation spot for city trippers and outdoor enthusiasts. And Latvia has none of the issues of mass tourism that plague other European countries. Even in the summer high season, the crowds are manageable and prices affordable. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

You have certainly convinced me, Aiva! I’m so intrigued by that waterfall; I’ve never seen anything quite like it before. Definitely not what I was expecting, and it’s funny that something so small was enough to thwart the movement of ships.

Thanks so much, Diana 🙂 We visited in the summer and were very excited to cross the widest waterfall in Europe, but you have to be very careful as the rocks are slippery. When crossing the actual red brick bridge that spans over the river, there is a myth that you must make a wish before crossing but then you can not speak till you get to the other side in oder for the wish to come true. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

We were actually chosing between traveling through Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania or Bolivia and Brazil last summer but South America won the debate. It’s still in our plans though and I’ll bookmark this post as a good reference. Maggie

As much as I love exploring my country and the Baltic States, if I had to choose between them and South America, I would prefer the latter. If you like your holidays to be relaxing then Latvia can tick off a good few boxes as there are plenty of saunas, spas and quiet coastal towns. Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend 🙂 Aiva xx

You paint a beautiful picture for travel to Latvia. I wonder if the waterfall is a result of a long ago earthquake that caused part of the area to drop. I wonder what the future is for many of these smaller countries in light of Russia’s expansion plans. Thanks for sharing Aiva. Have a great week. Allan

A few years ago, Latvia (esp Riga) was “tainted” by the stag and hen dos who used to decent like a dark cloud due to cheap booze and affordable lodging. These are fewer and far between these days and those who do come are far less noticeable compared to a few years back.

Ventas Rumba has formed on a layer of Devonian dolostone. Below it is a more fragile dolostone and, as the power of the stream erodes this softer layer, the harder layer forms overhangs, and falls down. Thus the waterfall is slowly receding – and as the stream in the central part is more powerful, the middle part has receded further upstreams than the sides of the waterfall.

How wonderful to read about your home country, Aiva. It looks so beautiful and the landscapes verdant. Turaida Castle is so unusual with it’s red brick. Would love, love, love to visit! My Irish Nana made the best potato cakes and I love the idea of sorrel soup.

Thanks so much, Kerry 🙂 From big city sophistication to heartfelt country hospitality, Latvia has a warm welcome for every visitor who can discover ancient castles, wander through stunning valleys or laze on miles of beaches. I was delighted to go back home last summer after three years of absence. Valters dad suddenly passed away only two months after our visit therefore I deeply cherish every moment I was able to spend with him and the rest of our family members. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

I am so sorry to hear about Valter’s father’s death. It’s a blessing that you were able to spend time with him, as a family, in happy circumstances. You are in my thoughts. Kerry x

Thanks so much xx

The coast of Latvia seems so peaceful and it would also be amazing to explore the castles there. Your home country looks beautiful!

Thanks so much 🙂 Latvia is a country that is located on the Baltic Sea. It has a beautiful landscape because it has wide beaches and beautiful natural things. Apart from fun things to do in Latvia, you can also drive to Estonia and take a ferry to Sweden or Finland; you can drive to Lithuania which is another gorgeous country in the Baltic States, or you might consider driving six hours to visit Saint-Petersburg or nine hours to visit Moscow. Either or, everything is pretty near if you are in Latvia. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

My husband and daughter were in Stockholm a few years ago to visit family and they took the ferry to Riga, then drove through to Lithuania to visit areas where my husband’s family came from! They did say Latvia was a pretty place.

That sounds like a fantastic trip and one that many people undertake. All you need is around 2 weeks to discover the 3 countries of the Baltics, and uncover just how truly unforgettable they are. Few people seem to talk about the Baltics, but they really are the perfect destinations for road-tripping! Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Your original homeland sounds beautiful, Aiva. Thank you for the enticing overview.

Thanks so much, Mark 🙂 Latvia is an affordable, charming and cultural country that is often overlooked in favour of more famous European destinations. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

I had a brief stay in Latvia almost four years ago: I only had enough time to see Riga and Rundale Palace, but visiting during the springtime was so lovely, as everything was in full bloom! There’s definitely a lot more to see in the country, and I hope to return to explore more!

Latvia is a place that is full of natural beauty and places. In order to explore these beauties, you must stay here for some period, but that’s not always possible. So even if you had just a few days in Latvia, you can see quite a lot given its petite size. I am glad to hear that you had a chance to visit one of my favourite Latvian castles – Rundale. This is a beautifully renovated palace. What is interesting is that they have left small patches in the rooms which show the layers of paint which had to be removed to reveal the original decoration. Thanks for stopping by and have great day 🙂 Aiva xx

If anything, it’s even better that Latvia isn’t super popular as it means you don’t have to deal with the crowds. You’ve certainly convinced me that Latvia is worth visiting. You had me at bogs, which are among some of my favourite landscapes. And who doesn’t enjoy exploring ancient castles?! Thanks for adding it on my travel bucket list.

You would love to visit Latvian bogs, Linda. The stunning Kemeri bog alone is over 8,000 years old and is one of the largest dry moss swamps on the Latvian coast Bogs are one of the biggest Latvia’s natural resources and nowadays they cover more than 10% of the national territory. Not many people would name a swamp as one of the most beautiful places on earth. But if you are willing to get up at the crack of dawn when trees are often poking through the dense fog under a spectacular orange sunrise, then you’ll be in for a treat. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

It all looks beautiful Aiva – it’s a part of Europe we have yet to visit….

Thanks so much, Marie 🙂 Whether you’re a foodie fanatic, a culture vulture or a Digital Nomad, you’re sure to find plenty to see and do in Latvia that will take your fancy. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

This was a great article and information. I have a friend who did a bike tour through Latvia and had a long stay as well to get to know the culture and people better and has nothing but good things to say about the country and people. I’m going to have to make a plan and itinerary and visit this year.

Thanks so much. I am glad to hear your friend had a memorable time exploring Latvia. Latvia is a watery wonderland that is thought to have as many as 12,000 rivers, 3,000 small lakes and a number of beautiful waterfalls. This means that there are plenty of opportunities to get out on the water, be that kayaking, canoeing or even swimming. It makes Latvia an excellent destination for hiking and exploring nature, and there’s nothing more peaceful than taking a walk around a lake! Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

I have already been to Latvia, too long ago to remember the details without the photos, precious memory aids, it will soon be time to go back, if all goes as planned, it will be next year.

I hope you make it back to Latvia one day. Latvia is a very budget-friendly place to travel. Accommodation, food and sightseeing are all pretty cheap not to mention the aforementioned locally-brewed beer that is kind on the wallet! It’s, therefore, no wonder that Riga is a popular Stag-Do destination or that families and backpackers love to choose this Eastern European gem for their budget-friendly vacation. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

You certainly make a compelling case to include Latvia in travel plans. I’m sorry I didn’t get to that area of Europe when I lived in Prague. You never know, I might get back to that part of the world…

Thanks so much 🙂 Latvia might be a small country, but there’s so much to see. a large proportion of Latvia’s landscape is covered in forest, and about 20% of that land (plus a number of marine areas) is protected. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Wow, it’s very impressive environmentally! I commend the government for setting aside so many lands for conservation.

Thank you 🙂 we are very proud to be one of Europe’s greenest nations. For many Latvians, a forest is a spiritual place, where people go to be at one with nature. xx

You needn’t say another word – I’m convinced! Actually, I’ve long been interested in visiting the Baltic states, including Latvia. This post will be very useful when that day comes, but don’t be surprised if I bug you for even more. 😉

I am glad to hear that you are interested in visiting my home country, Latvia! Half of the country is a beautiful natural landscape of forests, lakes and deep river valleys while the other half is made up of vibrant cities, blending World Heritage sites with modern designs. Along the coast, you’ll find famous spa towns and one of the longest sandy beaches in Europe, bordered by shallow seas containing relatively little salt. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

It looks breathtakingly beautiful indeed! I love how characteristic it is and so beautiful nature! I would love the food too…I would like to try those potatoes pancakes or those garlic toasties 😉

Thank you 🙂 You would have heaps of fun visiting Latvia as it offers a fascinating mix of cultures, history, landscapes and amazing food. You could explore the vibrant capital of Riga, the most cosmopolitan of the Baltic capitals, and step back in time in the old town amongst narrow lanes before flocking to Latvia’s attractive coast, scattered with white sand beaches and pine-covered dunes. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Aw a great list Aiva, and I feel so lucky to have seen quite a few of these places in person. Latvia is definitely a small but beautiful country which we absolutely loved visiting 🙂

I am glad to hear you loved visiting my home country Latvia. While Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are tiny, they pack a cultural punch, drawing more and more tourists to visit these historically and culturally rich countries. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Looks very inviting! Thank you for sharing your lovely highlights of Latvia!

Thanks so much 🙂 Latvia and the Baltic States may be naturally flat, but they’re certainly not lacking in beautiful viewpoints and natural phenomena. From golden sandy beaches to picturesque lakes, large swathes of forest, and wetlands rich with natural wildlife, there are few places in Europe with a such varied and attractive landscapes. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

I’ve never been to Latvia so this post is really the perfect teaser to inspire a visit in what seems to be a stunning country! I definitely have to add it on my bucket list and will for sure refer back to your blog when I finally visit!

Latvia makes for a fascinating getaway with a wide and exciting range of reasons to visit. It’s yet to be as popular as other eastern European cities such as Prague for instance, so now is a great time to enjoy all it has to offer. Compared to Western Europe and Scandinavia, Latvia is also a great value for money. This makes any expenditures such as food, transportation and accommodation very affordable indeed – meaning you can treat yourself more than usual! Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Looks very similar to Estonia so I am sure I would love it!! Looks fantastic!! Malin

Thanks so much, Malin 🙂 The capital city of Riga is a big highlight of any trip to Latvia. It has a beautiful old town, vibrant nightlife and some great festivals. Other places outside of Riga worth checking out include Sigulda, Liepāja and Cesis, each offering the country’s fantastic combination of history, nature and exciting activities. Have a lovely day 🙂 Aiva xx

I have never considered traveling here until now. You’ve got me curious. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much 🙂 Latvia has been a crossroads of Europe for centuries, giving it fascinating history and an exciting future. Thanks for stopping by and have a lovely day 🙂 Aiva xx

Never been. I should. Yet so many places to see, so little time… 😉 How have you been? Growing family, a house (or is it a flat?). My best wishes of happiness… 🤗

Thanks so much, Brian, that’s so sweet of you 🙂 If you are interested in Art Nouveau architecture, old towns, urban bars and lots of history, Latvia might be the right place to visit.

For me, the biggest adjustment was navigating the school run with a newborn in tow. Given I had to master the school run during the harsh winter month, I can safely say that it is not for the faint-hearted. Navigating traffic-laden streets and parking inspectors while (almost) running late with a child who left her hat at home and has school shoes on the wrong feet is the norm. But what happens when you throw something so unpredictable yet super precious as a newborn baby into the mix? After five months of navigating the murky waters of the dreaded school run, I realised it is not so bad after all. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

The school run means dropping #1 at school I imagine… That’s always tough. Here we help with the grandkids. Picking them up. My wife will pick them up for lunch in a while… (Then I will do some homework with the eldest. French homework… LOL) Be good.

We visited Latvia a few years ago . Such an amazing Baltic Sea. Such a fascinating country and so beautiful Aiva. This food was so delicious. Your post provides so so ideas. Thanks Anita

Hi, Anita, and thanks so much for stopping by. I am glad to hear you have wonderful memories of exploring Latvia – thanks to its somewhat tumultuous political history, Latvia is a country with multiple influences: a little of the East and a little of the West with a whole lot of artistic flair. Plus, with nearly half the country covered by forests and national parks, it’s a nature lover’s paradise as well. P.S. I love animals and therefore I loved stumbling upon your blog – your blog posts about chipmunks and bald eagles caught my attention right away. Therefore I am following your adventures. Have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

No we have never been to Latvia, Aiva. Gate One Travel offers a few trips to this Eastern European region and I will give their itineraries a look? What languages are spoken most in this country?

As I’ve never heard about Gtae One, I had to look it up to check its travel deals – some of them are quite exciting such as a Day Classic Baltics Central taking in Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius and Warsaw. That would be a trip to remember! While Latvian is the only official language and the only one you will notice on most signs, Latvia is effectively a bilingual country, with a third of its population speaking Russian.

After independence (1990) English replaced Russian as the most common foreign language to learn. The younger generations of ethnic Latvians usually speak English far better than Russian (and would switch to English when communicating with foreigners). English is also very common in tourist materials. Fluency in English is a requirement for anybody wishing to work in the tourist industry. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

You’ve ease my concerns about visiting this region amid the current Russian crisis. hanks.

What a gorgeous post. I’ve long wanted to visit Latvia for the cities, food and castles but had no idea it was such a beautiful country, nature wise, or that it was coastal. I think I need to plan a trip!

Thanks so much. I am delighted to hear about your desire to visit and explore my home country Latvia which can still be considered a hidden secret. From full of jaw-dropping architecture, fantastic museums, and charming eateries of Riga to vast forests and beautiful sandy beaches, it is a truly wonderful place to visit in Europe. Thanks for stopping by, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Latvia was under the heel of Soviet domination for generations. That has tainted the country remarkably little. Latvia is still Latvia, and offers views of itself with open arms for the world.

Come visit my blog, and leave some comments, if you like

http://www.catxman.wordpress.com

Latvia is an amazing country to visit as it is where you can discover elegant cities, vast expanses of pristine wilderness and stunning white sand beaches. The people of many former Soviet countries have a reputation for being stony-faced or even downright rude. But Latvians – while not overtly gregarious – are very friendly. Nearly all Latvians speak three languages well. In addition to their native tongue, Russian and English are widely spoken, even in the more remote areas. Thanks for stopping by, and have a good day. Aiva xx

Great photos – my husband and I visited Latvia and were knocked out by its beauty and the astonishing quality of the meals.

Hi, Jadi and thanks for stopping by. I am glad to hear you loved visiting my home country Latvia. It is a great place to escape the crowds and get off the beaten track. Have a wonderful day 🙂 Aiva xx

I have visited Riga twice, and have driven through Latvia from Lithuania. The country is stunning, the castles magnificent, and Riga is just a dream. The Art Nouveau buildings captivated me. My first visit to Riga coincided with a spring festival – the choirs, in national costume, were lovely, and the stalls selling food and local crafts were fascinating. I recently published a piece about my wonderful visit to the Curonian Spit . If you would like to read it you can see it at travelwithgma.wordpress.com/2023/12/12

Discover the Baltic Gem: 9 Reasons to Include Latvia in Your Summer Adventures

Latvia, the jewel of the Baltics, may not be the first country that comes to mind when planning a European vacation. However, this Northern European destination perfectly blends a rich history, stunning landscapes, vibrant cultural experiences, and more.

With our cold winters, it’s no surprise that most visitors come to Latvia in the summertime. It’s also when everyone ventures outdoors to enjoy the perfect weather for activities, sports, and events in the warm summer sun. From music events and traditional gatherings to exploring historic sites and enjoying local food, there’s something for everyone happening in the warm summer months in Latvia.

Latvia is one of the most quickly developing countries in the European Union. One area this is seen is in LGBT representation and gender parity, particularly in the fields of science and technology. The country has one of the highest proportions of women in science and technology in the European Union and recently elected the first LGBT head of state in the EU , demonstrating the progressive strides that Latvia has made since joining NATO and the EU.

While Latvians have a reputation for being introverted, it’s one of the happiest countries in the world. The country’s happiness is particularly visible this year after our national hockey team won its first medal at the IIHF World Championships in third place. It’s a big deal with the Parliament declaring a national holiday to celebrate!

1. Visit The Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia

Ethnographic Open Ai Museum of Latvia

Nestled in a pine forest by Lake Jugla, the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia offers an unforgettable summer escape, showcasing the country’s diverse and captivating history.

The museum features various farmsteads and dwellings that once belonged to farmers, craftsmen, and fishermen. As you explore their everyday objects, you’ll gain an understanding of how they decorated their properties and discover their livelihoods from centuries past.

Witness traditional craftsmen at work and try your hand at pottery, basket weaving, honey-making, or coin forging. You can even join in on traditional games and find out about upcoming events at the Ethnographic Museum to plan your visit around a lively festival or fair. As you immerse yourself in the rural life of the Latvian people, you’ll gain a unique insight into their customs and traditions.

2. Indulge in a Photo Tour of Riga

Riga, Latvia

Riga, the capital of Latvia, is a treasure trove of architectural beauty and historical landmarks.

A Riga photo tour is an absolute must for photography enthusiasts and Instagrammers. The city streets are lined with an array of picturesque buildings, each one more beautiful than the next. Capture the timeless beauty of Riga’s old town, the rustic charm of its wooden buildings, or our collection of Art Nouveau architecture, the largest in Europe.

Remember to visit spots like the House of Blackheads, Riga Cathedral, and the Three Brothers for some iconic shots. To make the most of your photography journey, consider doing a tour of these Riga photo spots . It offers a unique perspective on Riga’s most photogenic spots and provides the perfect route for your photographic exploration.

3. Relax on a Daugava River Cruise

Daugava River Latvia

The city streets aren’t the only vantage point to enjoy Riga from. Multiple operators offer boat tours on the Daugava River, where you can enjoy stunning views of Kronvalda Park, Bastejkalns, the Latvian National Opera, Riga Central Market, the Presidential Palace, and Dome Church, all within an hour. Or, you can take bigger river cruises that travel all the way from the Kristaps the Great to a more natural neighborhood of Riga, called Mežaparks.

Accompanied by an audio guide, you can soak in the city’s rich history while enjoying the breeze on the Daugava River.

4. Rent a Boat for a Personal Adventure

Latvia

Chartering a boat is a great option for those who prefer a more personal experience and fewer crowds. Bring along some friends and drinks, and enjoy a leisurely cruise along the water, taking in Riga’s beautiful skyline from a new perspective.

This option is particularly good for those with a love for water and the open sky. You can rent a boat and head out on your adventure on the Daugava River or even venture into the Baltic Sea. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a novice, plenty of options are available to suit your needs. You can choose what fits your preference and skill level, from motorboats to sailboats. This is a perfect way to enjoy the water, sun, and beautiful Latvian landscapes.

5. Float Along the Gauja River

Gauja River, Latvia

The Gauja River is a source of natural beauty and a hub for water-based adventures. As the longest and most popular river for boating in Latvia, the Gauja River offers water tourists an impressive journey through breathtaking landscapes, pristine nature, and rich historical architecture.

There are several alternative points along the way for your tour to start and end, allowing you to customize the length based on your preferences. Moreover, there are various ways to experience the serenity and beauty of the Gauja River, including kayaking, boating, or hopping onto the Gauja River Tram. Whichever you decide to choose depends on how adventurous, long, and physically active you want it to be.

6. Savor the Taste of Latvian Cold Beet Soup

Latvian Cold Beet Soup

Aukstā zupa, translated literally to cold soup, is a distinctive summer dish with an unexpected deep pink color. This chilled delight is especially associated with the warm season – as reflected in its popularity during ‘Vasara’, which means summer in Latvian. When you’re enjoying this cool, beet-infused treat, you’re savoring a Latvian summer’s taste.

Made with beets, cucumbers, kefir, hard-boiled eggs, dill, and other herbs of your choice, this soup has its own unique character that sets it apart from other beet soups. It can even be made vegan if desired with a few variations from the traditional recipe.

Latvian cold beet soup is more than just a meal; it’s a culinary journey that tells the story of our rich agricultural heritage.

7. Explore Rundale Palace

Rundale Palace Latvia

Visit the Rundale Palace and its beautiful gardens and castle interiors. Built between 1736-1740 and 1764-1768, Rundale Palace was the summer residence of the Duke of Courland, Ernst Johann Biron.

The palace was designed and built by the Italian architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, who also designed the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. The palace spans across 54 lavishly decorated rooms, each showcasing intricate details that reflect the opulence of its time. It’s an excellent specimen of Baroque architecture with an exquisite exterior adorned with ornate sculptures and intricate carvings.

No visit to Rundale Palace would be complete without exploring its lush gardens. Covering over 10 hectares, these extravagant gardens showcase an impressive collection of flowers, water features, and meticulously designed pathways. Take a leisurely stroll through these gardens, immerse yourself in their beauty, and let the history of this magnificent place unfold before your eyes.

8. Celebrate Midsummer in Latvia

Jani Celebration Latvia

Latvia’s enchanting Midsummer celebration, known as Jāņi, is the highlight of holidays in Latvia . Occurring from June 23 to 24, this ancient festival brings together people from all walks of life to honor the summer solstice with a myriad of unique customs, mouth-watering food, and joyful music. With an emphasis on nature, community, and mysticism, Jāņi captures the spirit of Latvia like no other holiday.

The heart and soul of Jāņi lies in its centuries-old traditions that have been passed down through generations. These customs are deeply rooted in Latvian culture and serve as a reminder of the nation’s rich heritage. As the sun sets on June 23, people gather around bonfires to honor the year’s longest day and shortest night. Friends and family come together to sing and dance to seasonally-specific folk songs under the open sky, accompanied by hearty laughter and clinking glasses.

9. Relax on Latvia’s Beautiful Beaches

Jurmala Beach Latvia

Jurmala and Ventspils are two remarkable beach destinations in Latvia that offer unforgettable experiences, especially during the summer.

Ventspils Beach, located just a few hours away from Riga, has a family-friendly atmosphere and diverse activities. This Blue Flag-certified beach provides separate areas for surfers, kiters, and everyone who simply wants to relax, ensuring everyone can indulge in their preferred pastimes. The Southern Pier’s observation tower provides fantastic sunset views, while the nearby Ventspils Yacht Harbour caters to boating enthusiasts.

Meanwhile, Jurmala is even closer to Riga. With a sprawling 12.5 miles of the prime seaside, Jurmala is the largest resort in the Baltic States, oozing historic charm. Beyond the seaside, the heart of Jurmala, Majori village, boasts Jomas Street, a bustling hub for shopping and dining. Eastern villages like Dzintari and Bulduri offer a more tranquil ambiance with picturesque boulevards lined with a mix of historic and contemporary architecture.

Bottom Line

Riga, Latvia

Latvia might be underrated, but it’s full of surprises and deserves a spot on your summer travel bucket list. Its warm weather, vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and historical gems make it an unbeatable choice for a fulfilling and memorable summer vacation. We also offer a digital nomad visa which can make spending the summer here easier for long-term travelers looking for a base in the Schengen zone.

So, don’t overlook this Baltic gem while planning your European summer adventures – you’ll indeed be charmed by all that Latvia has to offer.

10 amazing reasons to visit Latvia right now (2024)

' src=

Looking for reasons to visit Latvia? Let me convince you with these great facts about this Baltic country!

Visit Latvia

I have this good  friend from Latvia. Ever since I met her, she has talked about the awesome Riga and how super double awesome it is.

Each time she gets back from Riga , she tells me how much sushi she’s had, or how great her Latvian hairdresser was, or how cheap things were. I once asked her how she kept her skin so soft. “I go to  the spa .  In Riga.”

Of course, she does.

So, I finally decided to visit Latvia myself, and I can honestly say that you should go, too!

It really IS that great, that cheap, and that awesome. And, there are so many reasons to visit Latvia.

Let’s take a look!

10 amazing reasons to visit Latvia

1. a cool medieval vibe.

If you’ve never been to Europe, let me just say that Europe has the coolest medieval vibe IN THE WORLD.

Think haunted old castles, half-timbered houses, and cobblestone streets, some with city walls and towers. We have Dracula , the Lord Impaler. Need I say more?

However, whereas the medieval feel in  Dubrovnik reminded me of Game of Thrones , I was taken back to an old heathen setting when I visited Latvia.

It felt like a place with tales and sagas, festivals celebrating nature, and with old, ancient folks dancing.

Visit Latvia

2. Riga is affordable

Compared to Scandinavia and Western Europe, it’s very affordable to visit Riga .

Food, hotel, and transportation are cheap, and you can see all the major sights on foot because Riga is fairly small. It’s definitely a budget-friendly destination.

You know what? I didn’t spend a dime on sightseeing .

A decent meal will only set you back 7 EURO. Budget meals cost  €7-8 , midrange are €8-16 and high-end are  €15-30 .

If you want traditional Latvian food without paying a fortune, go to Lido. It’s a restaurant network with a huge buffet for a set price of €16 .

Lido serves lots of different soups, like Latvian cold beetroot soup and borscht, but also sausages, red meats, fish, and salads.

Accommodation

A dorm bed is € 10-25, a midrange hotel is € 25 and up, while a high-end hotel is € 80 and up.

Transportation

Riga is best explored by foot, but you can also take the tram. It’s easy and you can buy tickets at Narvesen (kiosk), on the tram, or at your hotel/hostel. A ride on the tram can cost you as little as 1 euro.

You can choose between many different kinds of tickets, including tickets for one (€1.15), two (€2.30), four (€4.60), five (€5.75), ten (€10.90) and twenty (€20.70) rides, or tickets good for one (€5), three (€10) or five (€15) days of travel.

Get more info about ticket types and prices  here .

And to my Danish and other Northern European readers: plane tickets are insanely cheap. From Copenhagen, they get as low as €33 for a return ticket and it’s only a 1.5-hour flight.

Visit Latvia

3. There’s free WIFI

And did I mention the free WIFI ?

As a travel blogger and incurable WIFI-addict, I was stoked to find out that there’s an internet connection everywhere and most of it is free.

Visit Latvia

4. Stunning Baltic architecture

Another memorable thing about Latvia is the Baltic architecture, especially the Art Nouveau .

I recognized the churches and bell towers from what we have in Denmark and from Gdansk , but aside from that it was totally different.

Visit Latvia

5. It’s a fairly hidden gem

The fact that Latvia is still fairly undiscovered only makes it more charming.

You’ll see tourists and other travelers in Riga, but it is by no means overrun or crowded like many other European capitals.

In my opinion, it has the perfect balance of authenticity and tourism.

Riga, Latvia

6. It’s green and lush

You can visit Latvia all year round, but you should know that winters are frosty with temps dropping to -10 degrees.

If you visit from June to September , the streets will be alive, parks will be lush, and flowers bloom around gardens and the many green areas in Riga.

Riga, Latvia

7. It’s the perfect spa getaway

The best thing about Latvia though is the criminally cheap spas. Only in Asia have I had such amazing and extremely stupefyingly EPIC massages as in Latvia.

Ohmygoodness! And did I mention how cheap they were?!

I spent a whole day at ESPA Riga , a luxurious five-star spa, having facials, body scrubs, hour-long massages, pool and sauna time topped off with a gourmet 2-course meal and champagne.

The total price? Only €170.

We’re talking about the very best Latvia has to offer here, so of course it’s totally possible to get much cheaper spa experiences, too. If you were to get the same experience in Denmark , you would be paying over twice as much.

Riga, Latvia

8. Insanely cheap sushi

I come from a land where sushi is as expensive as gold. In Denmark , I pay €10 for one roll with 8 pieces. In Riga , I pay €4.

Latvians seem to have a thing for sushi because I saw sushi everywhere! My favorite place was Tokyo City , which is a hip restaurant chain.

They have this ongoing offer where you get 2 for the price of 1. So I ordered 1 Philadelphia roll and 1 salmon nigiri, but instead, I got 2 rolls and 2 nigiri for the same price.

Ps. Their menu cards are in Latvian, but there are big images of all the food so it’s easy to see what’s what.

Riga, Latvia

9. A rich history

On a more serious note, Latvia has a long history of occupation.

For the past 500 years, it has been under foreign occupation, and The Museum Of Occupation gives you a glimpse into what the country has overcome.

Close by, you’ll find The Freedom Monument honoring soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence (1918–1920).

Both places are free to visit.

Riga, Latvia

10. Beautiful views

And last but not least – let’s not forget the views.

I don’t know if I was lucky or if the sunsets are generally this good, but I definitely saw some outstanding sunsets in Latvia.

It’s a great place, really. I stayed on a low budget and still got a high-end experience. Latvia is one of those places where you really get the most for your money, especially because it’s in Europe which is generally super expensive.

I’m definitely going back.

Loved this post. You have me really wanting to do a spa day, lol Thanks for sharing your amazing pictures.

Yay, thanks! The spa was my favorite experience in Riga and I’m writing a post about it soon with all the info. LOVE the spa 🙂

I enjoyed your review about Riga! I have family there so I visit often and will be going this summer!! You should next write about the wonderful Latvian food and Beer they have there! Though I look forward to reading about your visit to the SPA!!

Thanks, Linda! That’s a great idea! I was so consumed with the sushi that I neglected Latvian food. But at least now I have a great reason to come back 🙂

Thank you for the lovely post Miriam, I really enjoyed reading it.. I am from Latvia (living in the Isle of Man) and I am extremely proud of the country I came from. Thank you for the beautiful post! 🙂

I am so happy to hear that, Evija! Getting positive feedback from a local is the best there is, so thank you <3

I’m actually heading to Latvia this upcoming Monday, and you’ve definitely confirmed my excitement! Thanks for sharing 🙂

Sounds wonderful, Cassie! It’s freezing over there right now (minus 15 degrees) so bring warm clothes 🙂

My wife will be heading there tomorrow from Houston, Texas, USA where are temps are in the 70’s this time of year. She is nervous about the colder weather there. Any recommendations about dress.

Hi Mike, I spoke to my friend who just returned from Riga this Monday and she says it’s -15 degrees. Make sure to dress in layers and wear wool or/and fur, especially on your head.

Have a great trip!

Very nice! Wonderful photos, and some great tips. It’s on my list!

Glad you liked it, Stephen! I hope you get to visit some day – it’s truly awesome.

Amoni GH, can I work in Latvia if am on tourist?

I wouldn’t know. Sorry.

If you are from a EU country except the UK it seems.

Thank you for the great post . I am from Lithuania ( near Latvia ) and I am very happy of the this country . Thank you for the amazing post! 🙂

You’re super welcome 🙂 I’d love to visit Lithuania sometime, the Hill of Crosses in particular!

The sunset over the river in Riga are one of my favorites, the bridge next to the Swedbank building really looks amazing with the sunset in the background. 🙂

I like it a lot, too 🙂 Have you been there after dark when the bridge lights up? I missed that unfortunately, but I’ve heard it’s beautiful.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful post with us. By seeing your pictures one can know how beautiful Latvia is. Riga has plenty of nightspots to entertain stag parties during the evenings as well. A popular place to start is the Old Town, and particularly in the Town Hall Square.

Thanks Flora, and thanks for stopping by. One of the great things about Riga is that it caters to many different types of people and travelers. And, it’s perfect for a weekend getaway.

Thanks for good words about my country! Judging from images You have not been much outside Riga and then it is like judging whole France only by seeing Paris – there is a lot to see in Paris but even more – outside it. The same is true for Latvia 😉 To my mind most of the country is more welcoming, civilised and orderly than Riga. Try Kuldīga, Cēsis, Sigulda – you would be pleasantly surprised. Or Liepāja. And lots of nature with nature trails and wonders, cosy restaurants and country residences in between.

You’re absolutely right, Gatis. You can’t judge a country just by visiting one city. I guess with this post I wanted my readers to see Latvia as a destination and not just Riga. Personally, I’d love to return in the winter and explore the nature and countryside.

Hey Miriam!

Thanks for a great article! Glad to see that you loved Riga so much. The article is really light-hearted.

Keep on travelling and writing, you’re the real MVP! 😀

Thanks so much, Anton 😀

I went to Riga last summer of 2015 but I’ve never seen that amazing sunset. I guess I have to go back.

There’s always a reason to go back to Riga 😉

I can’t find the Riga list of things to do and see? Could you direct me?

Riga sounds great. Did you do Tallinn too? I think Tallinn looks sublime.

Hi Julian, here it is: https://adventurousmiriam.com/15-amazing-things-you-must-do-in-riga/ and you can find my articles from Tallinn here: https://adventurousmiriam.com/tallinn-is-a-baltic-fairytale/ https://adventurousmiriam.com/10-things-to-do-in-medieval-tallinn/

Are you going? Tallinn is a lovely place, just like a fairy tale!

Great Blog! Beautiful pictures. I am Kaveri, from India. Varun plan to visit Latvia in July. I was wondering what other places you would suggest we visit other than Riga and Jurmala.

Hi Kaveri, I’ve only been to Riga, so I don’t have any other suggestions for Latvia. You could always take a day trip to Lithuania or Estonia though. Have a great trip!

I loved your blog about Riga, it’s very informative! I’m going to Latvia in July. I’m curious as to how safe it is for young solo women traveling there?

Hi McKenzie, Thanks so much! Riga is safe for solo female travelers so no need to worry. I went there alone in the summer, too, and didn’t feel unsafe or vulnerable.

Just use common sense, like don’t walk alone in deserted areas when it’s dark and beware of pickpockets and scammers. And stay away from the outside market area close to the Central Market – this area seemed very poor, dirty and unprotected. In the center, you can walk anywhere alone, no problem.

Have an amazing trip – Riga is great!

You nailed it. I just returned from Latvia…side tei P from Copenhagen…and it’s just as you have described. Soooooo inexpensive. 5 star hotels for 50 Euro and spa deals too good to imagine. Food was cheap, but the quality was lacking. Very friendly people and no crowds. Amazing destination.

Glad to hear you had a wonderful trip, Nancy! It’s such an easy trip from Copenhagen, we really should go more often! 😀

You’re welcome, Rose!

Latvia seems so stunning and definitely worth exploring, Miriam! It’s great to learn that it can be explored on foot and that there is free wi-fi almost everywhere. How many days would you recommend staying there to see all the highlights?

It’s a great country and somehow magically not overrun with tourists. I’d say 2-4 days in Riga would be suitable to get a good impression of the capital. I was there for 4 days and felt like I had lots of time 😀

Nice post about the beautiful Latvia country. i will visit in April to Riga. there is possible to find Indian restaurants. Please give me some more tips and information.

Thanks, Vinod! I didn’t see any Indian restaurants while I was there, but a quick Google search gave me this: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g274967-c24-Riga_Riga_Region.html

Have a great trip to Riga!

This world is full of surprises and there isn’t any doubt that a passionate traveler cannot just stop exploring the beautiful and breath-taking places.

I agree! Luckily we never run out of stunning places to visit 🙂

You’ve written an amazing article about my home country, i’m really glad you enjoyed it! 🙂

So glad to hear that, Andris! I loved Latvia 🙂

I was just looking for an article about Latvia, its history, food, real estate. Thank you very much, very interesting and necessary article for me.

I’m glad you found it helpful, Tori 🙂

I am going to Riga Latvia in March.

I hope you got to visit before the pandemic, Charlene.

Hey The currency of Latvia is euro. There are several plural forms of the name ‘euro’. These are euro, euros. The symbol used for this currency is €, and it is abbreviated as EUR. Therefore, when you go there, do not forget about it.

10 reasons to visit Latvia in autumn

There’s no other way to say this - Latvia in autumn is a magnificent place. The sun is still high in the sky, shining a warm and golden light, reminiscent of the bygone summer. Forests become a kaleidoscope of colours - from flaming orange to bright magenta, from warm terra cotta to honey yellow, and a thousand shades in between.

We’ve come up with great reasons to visit Latvia in autumn - make sure you add Latvia to your list before the whole world finds out how amazing it is!

Wonderful autumn colours

Admiring colourful autumn displays is definitely one of the top reasons to visit Latvia in autumn. Over 50% of Latvia is covered in forests, meaning you won’t have to search hard - even just a quick walk around Riga is enough to transport you straight into an autumn fairytale as you wander around parks and gardens.

reasons to visit latvia

Yet, we highly recommend renting a car and driving around - you can  head to Jūrmala  on the coast, to see colourful forests reaching as far as the sea, or drive to  Sigulda, Latvia’s unofficial ‘autumn capital’ , surrounded by colourful forests.

Ideal weather

Autumn colours in Latvia are at their best in mid-October, which incidentally is also a great time to visit in terms of weather. The sweltering heat of summer has gone, and the cold winter winds haven’t yet kicked in. There’s also still a fair amount of sunlight, with the sun rising around 6 am and setting at about 7 pm.

reasons to visit latvia

We were lucky to visit during one of the warmest Octobers in history, with temperatures touching 23°C during the daytime. Average temperatures are about 10°C lower, sometimes dipping below freezing at night.

reasons to visit latvia

Perfect for bike lovers

Latvia is fairly flat, with its highest point measuring only 311 meters above sea level. This, combined with stunning landscapes and mild weather can only mean one thing - Latvia is the perfect cycling destination!

Travelling around the country, we’ve seen bike paths in both Riga and Jūrmala, as well as a multi-country cycle path network linking Latvia and Estonia, making it possible to travel between Riga, Tallinn and other major cities on the two countries by bike.

Outside Riga and surrounds, country roads are rarely busy and it’s easy to cycle around even when there are no bike paths. We cycled for over 30 km around Aluksne and surrounds, and barely saw another car.

Lots of adventures

If you don’t like cycling, fear not - there are plenty of other adventures to be enjoyed in Latvia! One of them is bog walking, which is especially spectacular in autumn as mosses and other small plants start to change colour.

reasons to visit latvia

10% of Latvia is covered in bogs, and it’s easy to explore these ecosystems even if you don’t have much time to venture away from Riga. A good place to go bog walking is the  Cena Bog (Cenis Tirelis) , where you can hike independently following a boardwalk or join a guided tour where you’ll have the chance to wear ‘bog shoes’!

Cena Moorland Footpath

Cenas tīreļa purva laipa

Sigulda is also another hotspot for adventure lovers in Latvia. The hilly landscape surrounding the city makes it a great hiking destination, and the  Tarzan Adventure Park  on the outskirts of town will fulfill the desires of adrenaline junkies with attractions like the ‘human catapult’, adventure courses through the trees and even a zip line.

Not many tourists

A great reason to visit Latvia in autumn is that you won’t have to share the place with millions of other tourists. The country is blissfully unaffected by the over tourism issues affecting most of Europe in summer, and in autumn even fewer people visit. With the exception of Riga, you may be the only tourist for miles!

reasons to visit latvia

However, please bear in mind that even though tourists may not have yet found out about the beauty of Latvia in autumn, locals are very much aware of it! During the weekends, places like Sigulda, Jūrmala and the  Gauja National Park  are very busy with local visitors, but there’s hardly anyone if you visit mid week.

Gauja National Park

Gauja National Park

It’s affordable

For European standards, Latvia is very affordable. You can easily have a delicious meal for 15 euro, rent a car for a week for less than 200 and enjoy a night on a comfortable hotel for as little as 50 euro.

Prices rise in summer as the tourist influx increases, and autumn is the perfect time to get some excellent deals on flights and accommodation, making your experience even more affordable.

reasons to visit latvia

Riga Restaurant Week

What do you know about Latvian food? If your answer is ‘not much’, we warmly recommend making your autumn adventure coincide with Riga Restaurant Week, an event taking place in mid-October as a way to showcase  Latvian cuisine  and seasonal products.

The Flavours of Latvia

Latvijas ēdieni

Restaurants participating in the event offer a three or four course menu for 15 or 20 euro , with creative dishes making use of products like forest mushrooms, wild berries, seasonal game and freshwater fish. You can also sample Latvian fruit wine and craft beer paired with the dishes on offer.

It’s easy to reach

Latvia is extremely well connected to Europe and beyond, with AirBaltic flying to a multitude of destinations from Riga International Airport and a fleet of comfortable buses heading to nearby countries like Lithuania, Estonia, Russia, Germany and Poland.

reasons to visit latvia

Easy to get around

If getting to Latvia is easy, getting around is even easier! A modern bus system connects all major cities with regular departures, and ticket prices are extremely affordable. Train lovers can also travel by rail, but buses offer more flexibility and more frequent departures.

If you’re planning to hunt for the best autumn scenes, we recommend renting a car to move around at will. Outside Riga, there’s next to no traffic and roads are very well signposted. On top of that, the country is fairly small and most towns seemed to be between one and two hours away.

reasons to visit latvia

Friendly locals

This is definitely one of the top reasons to visit Latvia, in autumn or any other season really! Latvians have a reputation for being shy and not very sociable, to the extent that the country has been nicknamed ‘Europe’s nation of introverts’.

reasons to visit latvia

During our week in the country, we’ve crossed paths with nothing but friendly, welcoming people. What is called ‘introversion’ seemed to be more of a love for solitude, nature and silence, than flat out social awkwardness. We met a young man who said he loves taking long bike rides ‘to charge his batteries’, and a lady who ends most of her days walking along the Jurmala beach after returning home from her stressful job. If I lived in a place as beautiful as Latvia, I’m pretty sure that I would also escape to nature every chance I get.

Why I Love Nature Of Latvia So Much – And Why You’ll Love It Too

Everyone who’s reading my blog posts from time to time may have noticed that I focus on the nature of Latvia very much. Why? Well, first, I love nature and it is easy to focus on something you love. Nature has been the love of my life since I remember myself. And not only the nature of Latvia.

It’s not very surprising that I decided to become a biologist. Funny that during my studies I rarely met any study mate, who was as green as I was.

I have even a hypothesis that being a Riga City boy I probably value wild nature much more than those my friends coming from the countryside. They’ve had probably enough greenery during their childhood. Just my guess.

Whatever is the reason for me being so green I am more than 100% sure nature of Latvia won’t disappoint anyone who is of a similar mindset as I am and probably even some of those who aren’t. After all, if my passion for nature can convince someone to appreciate more greenery around us, we all will be the winners.

Here are the reasons I love nature of Latvia so much and I’m pretty sure you’ll love it too.

Why Nature of Latvia Is Actually the First and Main Reason To Come Here?

Latvia might not be a standard ecotourism destination that first comes to your mind. You might know something about our famous capital city Riga but probably not much more. Well, many of my guests refer to their friends, who were first surprised about their decision to visit Latvia.

It is true that Latvia is still somewhat off-the-beaten-path and under the radar destination for most of the travelers. Yet, once you come here you may guess, why you did not know about Latvia earlier.

Being by one third bigger than the Netherlands and Switzerland and twice bigger than Belgium Latvia has only 1.9 million people. This naturally makes plenty of room for nature. Nature of Latvia is still pristine and relatively untouched, making Latvia a perfect ecotourism destination in Northern Europe.

Nature of Latvia_idaadventures_escaperies

Visit Latvia and you’ll have a chance to see many nature values that had been lost in other parts of modern Europe decades ago. Today Latvia is one of the greenest countries in Europe.

Natural Habitats

Latvia is the home for many protected habitats of European Union (EU) and also international importance. For those looking for the full list, you can find it  here .

#1: Baltic Sea & Stunning Sandy Beaches – Probably The Main Reason To Come

Latvia has for sure among the most stunning Nordic coastlines in the world. The beaches in Latvia are some of the best beaches in Europe. The Latvian Baltic Sea coast is more than 500 km (300 miles) long. It is largely secluded but at the same time mostly public and easily available for everyone.

Boreal Baltic sandy beaches and different types of coastal dunes are the habitats of EU importance, many of them being well-preserved in Latvia.

#2: Dense Forests – Not Just The Source Of Timber

Latvia is the land of forests. Forests cover more than 50% of its territory, which is well above Europe’s average of 33%. Not surprisingly many goods, houses, etc. are made of wood here.

Dominating trees are pine, spruce, birch, and alder. There are coniferous, deciduous and lots of mixed forests. You’ll also see threes like oak, ash, elm, hazel, linden, maple, willow and other species typical and not that typical for Northern and Central Europe.

Latvian broad-leaved forests become especially beautiful during the fall. Gorgeous Gauja National Park is a popular destination during this season. Locals, especially from Riga, are heading to Sigulda town during the autumn’s weekends to admire the colors of changing seasons there. So you better choose working days to visit this place unless you enjoy crowds and lots of traffic.

Coniferous western taiga forests and different types of the rare natural old broad-leaved boreal and mixed forests are all big values that represent the greenery and nature of Latvia.

#3: Bogs, Fens & Mires – Places Of Pristine Nature

Natural bog-lands of Latvia are something not to miss when discovering the nature of Latvia. Many of these bogs and mires are truly wild and pristine. We still have unique bog habitats that had mostly disappeared in Western Europe. Such are active raised bogs, calcareous and alkaline fens, transition mires and more.

Some of the most amazing well-preserved raised bogs are very close to Riga. The most popular is the Great Kemeri Bog in Kemeri National Park and Cena Mire. You don’t need any special footwear to walk in these places, as there are wooden boardwalks set-up for visitors.

Good choices for visiting are also more distant Suda Mire in Gauja National Park, Teirumnīku Mire in eastern Latvia (Latgale), Vasenieku Mire in western Latvia (Kurzeme) or even the wild bog-lands of Slitere National Park and Ziemeļu Mire on Latvian/Estonian border.

#4: Lakes & Rivers – Your Endless Options For Kayaking/Canoeing Trips

The nature of Latvia is rich with freshwater. We are among the leaders of freshwater resources in Europe. Around 12,000 rivers and 3,000 lakes of different sizes are what makes Latvia so watery. Eastern region of Latvia – Latgale is even called the “Land of Blue Lakes”, and this is not without a reason. It’s rich with beautiful lakes.

There are seven protected freshwater habitats of EU importance in Latvia. The best way to enjoy Latvian rivers and lakes is to go for a kayaking or canoeing trip.

The most popular rivers for boating in Latvia are Gauja, Salaca, Abava, and Irbe. Check out for more details about the best kayaking trips in Latvia here .

#5: Grasslands – Important Part Of Latvian Traditions

For those looking for some open space, Latvian grasslands might be an attraction. There are ten protected grassland habitats of EU importance in Latvia. Although not always that well-preserved natural meadows are an important part of Latvian rural landscape.

Baltic tribes arrived in this region some 2000 years B.C. They brought many changes here, including agricultural traditions and open lands in the otherwise naturally forested places. Since then, pastures and meadows had gradually become an integral part Latvian rural landscape. Lots of them ceased to exist though during Soviet occupation when traditional agriculture practices were largely abandoned.

Natural meadows are an important part of Latvian traditions. Even in this modern world Latvians collect plants that grow in meadows for health and beauty treatment purposes (as well as wild berries and mushrooms in the forests and bog-lands for homemade food). Visit Latvia during the Summer solstice time (from 20 to 24 June) and you’ll see the importance of nature and greenery in our culture at its utmost.

For grassland habitats to be well maintained they must be managed. Today many EU and local initiatives support mowing and grazing of natural meadow habitats to increase and keep their biodiversity. Natural meadows are home for many insect species, rare plants, and birds’ species.

If you want to see grassland management in action you may wish to visit the sites like nature parks “Pape Lake” and “Lake Engure” or Lielupe River Floodplain in Jelgava City. You’ll see amazing natural wetlands and semi-wild “grazing machines” – hairy highlander cows and konik horses – doing their grazing job there.

#6: Rocky Habitats & Caves

There are no mountains in Latvia. Yet, we have rocky habitats and caves here. These are very rare but “must” places to see in Latvia found mostly on the slopes of river valleys and on the vegetated sea cliffs of the Baltic Sea coast.

Steep Baltic Sea Coast

These are all generally “soft” limestone and sandstone formations, hence being very fragile ecosystems.

In some places, these are truly impressive monuments of Latvian nature. Gauja River Valley is the most famous place to go in Latvia with rocky riverbank slopes that are around 350 million years old. The best way to enjoy them is by kayaking or canoeing on this river.

In many places, it is also a great idea to go for a hiking trip in Gauja National Park .

Salaca river is another great boating destination to see this rare wonder of Latvia.

Not least impressive are the sandy cliffs on the western coast of the open Baltic Sea close to Jurkalne village. This is also a great place for coastal hiking and enjoying secluded beaches in Latvia.

Birds & other animals

Birds to see.

During the spring and autumn migration periods (April-May and September-October) Latvia is a paradise for birdwatchers. The spring and autumn bird migration routes go across the country. In the autumn, birds travel from Scandinavia and northern Russia across Latvia to Southern Europe and Africa. Then they come back in the spring.

There are lots of shallow lagoon lakes along the Baltic Sea coast. The biggest ones are Engure, Kanieris, Pape, Babite and Liepaja lakes. We also have plenty of forests and flood-lands. This all makes Latvia a great dwelling place for many migratory bird species.

In case you are a keen bird-watcher you should not miss Kolka Cape, where the open Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga meet. Also, you might wish to check out Lubana Lake Wetland complex in the Eastern Latvia (Latgale). Lake Lubans is also the biggest lake in Latvia.

There are altogether 365 recorded bird species in Latvia. One species for each day of a short year, if I may say so. Woodpeckers and owls in the forests, ducks, seagulls and swans in the coastal area, Bittern in the reedbeds, Lesser Spotted Eagle in open places, Osprey and cranes in bog-lands, Corncrake in grasslands. These are just some samples of our feathered heroes.

Eagle Owl_Bird watching_Latvia_idaadventures_escaperies_photo Aivars Petrins

There are also lots of bird watching towers set up at the best bird watching spots. Thus bird-watching is for sure one of the best things to do in Latvia. Ask locals to arrange a great bird-watching trip for you.

Some bigger animals

The nature of Latvia has also some bigger animals to offer. Some of the species are not that common in other parts of Europe. You can spot wolves, lynx, elks, deer, wild boars, lot of beavers, badgers, otters and even some bears here. You must be very lucky to see most of these wild animals in nature though because they are all very cautious. There is still an option to see them on a special nature trail  in Ligatne , if you wish.

Protected Areas – Best Places To Visit

There are 4 national parks, 42 nature parks, and 261 nature reserves in Latvia. We also have 4 strict nature reserves (not accessible to visitors), around 355 nature monuments, 7 protected marine areas, and the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve. There are lots of small protected areas called micro-reserves too. All these areas are set-up for the protection of species, natural habitats, and traditional landscapes. Many of them are great eco-tourism spots.

Here is a great movie about protected areas of Latvia. Enjoy!

reasons to visit latvia

Most of the protected areas in Latvia are also the areas of European Union importance, which means that most of them are so-called Natura2000 network sites. The best and most diverse places to visit for those who want to explore nature in Latvia are the four national parks and North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve. Yet, there are also many other great smaller protected nature areas that a nature lover might want to check out.

You can find the full list of all protected territories in Latvia here .

#1: Gauja National Park – The “Must See” In Latvia

Gauja National Park is the oldest national park in Latvia. It is the most beautiful destination that attracts many visitors. You can soak up the beauty of pristine nature here, which is so different in each of the four seasons.

In spring and summer, it is a popular place for kayaking/canoeing in the gorgeous Gauja River Valley. In the autumn the beautiful broad-leaved forests in Gauja Valley turn into breath-taking yellow and red colors. While in snowy winter it is a great place for skiing. Gauja National Park is a “must see” place if you are interested to see the best of the nature in Latvia.

#2: Slitere National Park – The Wildest Place To Go

Slitere National Park is the wildest national park in Latvia. It is in the northwest part of the country and includes Kolka Cape – the place where the “two seas” meet: the open Baltic Sea to the West and the Gulf of Riga to the East. Earlier it used to be a strict nature reserve with a very limited public access. Today it is a national park open for visitors. In some parts, public access is restricted though to protect its natural values.

Slitere National Park is rich with pristine forests, untouched bog lands, and amazing sandy beaches.

#3: Kemeri National Park – The Place Of Magic Bog-lands

Kemeri National Park is the closest national park to Riga. This makes it also the most visited one. The most attractive parts for visitors are Great Kemeri Bog with its boardwalk. Lake Kaņieris is a perfect spot for bird watching and angling. The park is also famous for its sulfur springs.

#4: Razna National Park – The Gem Of Eastern Latvia

Razna National Park is the youngest of all national parks in Latvia. It is in the eastern part of the country called Latgale. The park itself is named after a big Lake Rāzna, which is sometimes called the “Sea of Latgale”. Razna National Park has lakes and forests and the unique diversity of nature.

#5: North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve

North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve is the biggest protected area in Latvia. As the name itself suggests the reserve is in the northern part of Vidzeme (central) region of Latvia.

The reserve is a protected area of international importance recognized by UNESCO. The area includes lots of natural and cultural values and many smaller protected areas. You can enjoy the gorgeous Rocky Seashore of Vidzeme. Or you can also head to any of the remote and pristine bog-land areas near the Estonian border.

#6: Nature Parks

The most prominent protected areas mentioned above are not the only ones worth looking at when you visit Latvia. There are also smaller nature areas that you might be interested in. Such are:

“Lake Pape” Nature Park

The nature park of Lake Pape is the area in the very southwest part of Latvia. Lake Pape is a shallow lagoon lake. It is a perfect place for bird watching during the migration periods in the spring and summer. Pape is a remote place. Plan a visit there if you go to Liepaja City.

Nature Park “Bernati”

Nature Park “Bernati” is another great place near the Baltic Sea. It is only halfway between Liepaja city and Lake Pape. The beach is gorgeous here. Yet be careful while swimming in the sea! There are cunning rip currents in this area.

Nature Park “Piejura”

“Piejūra” means “at the sea” in Latvian. The name itself suggests that the park lays at the seacoast. If you come to Riga City or Carnikava and Saulkrasti towns, this is by far the closest natural area you can visit. Yet don’t let its location to fool you. You’ll find gorgeous beaches, sandy and grey dunes as well as amazing coastal pine forests here.

Travel to Latvia

Nature Park “Piejura”

The nature in Latvia is abundantly present even in the big cities and towns.

“Lake Engure” Nature Park

Lake Engure is about 70 km/44 miles to the northwest from Riga. It is a shallow lagoon lake, hence being a paradise for migrating birds and a good place for bird watchers. It is much closer to Riga than the similar Lake Pape. The lake is close to the Gulf of Riga. Thus you can combine bird watching on the lake with a relaxed afternoon on a beach.

Abava Valley Nature Park

Abava Valley Nature Park is an amazing destination for a kayaking or canoeing trip. It has impressive landscapes, cozy old towns on their banks and natural diversity. Depending on which section of this river you plan to conquer you will get one or all these values combined.

Nature Park “Daugavas loki” (Meanders of Daugava)

Nature Park “Daugavas loki” (Meanders of Daugava) is a scenic area in the very south-east part of Latvia. It is famous for its pronounced natural meanders of the biggest river of Latvia – Daugava. This is also the UNESCO heritage site. You will see totally different Daugava compared to the same river in Riga.

“Daugavas loki” is a beautiful place for kayaking and canoeing. You will witness amazing off-the-beaten-path nature spots here. The water tourism is not that well-developed on Daugava as it is on other popular rivers in Latvia. Hence you can ask a professional local adventure travel company to arrange your trip when visiting Latvia.

Daugavas loki_ Escaperies

Lubana Wetland Complex – Birds’ Paradise

Lubans is the biggest lake in Latvia. The unique lake and the area around it are a wetland of international importance (a RAMSAR site). Lake Lubans is another great place for bird watching in Latvia. There are six bird watching towers available for this activity.

The area is the home for many protected species and habitats. You can also buy local fish and rent a boat here.

It is common and natural that people first travel to the capital city of any less known destination. Therefore, Riga is probably more popular than Latvia itself. This is so far. Yet, once you get the first insights you want to know more, right? It is time to dig deeper. At this point let me introduce the real Latvia that starts outside Riga and consists mostly of nature.

Nature is one of the main reasons to visit Latvia. Amazing sandy and secluded beaches, vast forests, pristine bog-lands, the abundance of rivers and lakes and natural meadows are the main treasures worth coming for to Latvia. If ecotourism is what speaks to you, the diverse nature of Latvia and plenty of national and nature parks won’t let you be disappointed.

Women wrapped in fur coats, frost-covered buildings, twinkling lights in the early night: Riga in winter offers a quiet beauty that rewards attentiveness with wonder.

It is a city marked with scars of foreign occupation displayed in the blend of Medieval, Art Nouveau and Soviet architecture. Yet it is resilient in its celebration of Latvian culture.

Riga is the capital of Latvia, and the largest city in the three Baltic Countries (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania). It’s tucked away on the East Coast of the Baltic Sea.

Home to a third of Latvia’s local population (632,614 in 2019, roughly the population of Boston), it is best known for its old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Affordable and culturally rich, Riga is a must-see travel destination , whatever the season. READ MORE: Top 10 Things to Do in Riga, Latvia

What to See When You Visit Riga

House of the Black Heads, an iconic landmark in Riga

1. Diving Into the Past: Guided Tour of the Occupation Museum

To understand Latvia, especially as a post-Soviet state, you must do a guided tour of the Occupation Museum. Expertly curated, the guide will take you through an interactive retelling of Latvia’s history during its Nazi and Soviet occupations.

You will learn of national pains and terrors, but most importantly, of survival and hope. The exposition aspires not only to grief, but most importantly to thoughtfulness and empathy towards the tumultuous history of Riga and Latvia in general.

2. A National Treasure: The Opera

Chandelier inside the Latvian National Opera.

Going to the National Latvia Opera is a fun, inexpensive and culturally immersive activity in Riga. Tickets range from 10-50 euros depending on your seat location, and the theater is almost always full—even during the week.

The Nutcracker is especially popular during the holidays (no surprise, given that a large population of the city is Russian speakers). Thus it is impossible to get tickets at the last minute.

Whether you are a fan of opera singing or ballet, the venue itself is worth a visit. Impressively gilded walls, painted ceilings, elegant chandeliers and beautifully dressed patrons give the space a very graceful ambiance.

And don’t worry there are English subtitles.

3. Warm Medicine: Balsam Tasting at Black Magic

Visit Riga Black Magic's secret door

Black balsam is very proudly advertised as the liquor of choice in Riga. The best place to taste it is at Black Magic, a medieval-themed bar in the old town. Albeit a very tourist-centered attraction, Black Magic is quite a fun and intriguing venue.

The tasting is held in an underground vault, accessible only through a secret door. There, you will taste locally crafted balsam (and chocolate). Plus you will get to listen to a very enthusiastic storyteller elaborate on the history of Latvian balsam and its medicinal properties. Magic may or may not be involved, but you are guaranteed to leave the bar warm and joyful.

4. A Frozen Beach: Jurmala

Jurmala's frozen beach

A 30-minute train ride west of Riga will take you directly to Jurmala Beach and the Baltic Sea. While especially popular in summer, Jurmala’s winter landscape is not to be missed. Layers of hardened snow, like frozen pieces of the tide, line the beach as far as the eye can see.

The sky is wide and open, and so is the land, colored in hues of blue and gray, white and pink. A sliver of ocean separates them, made evident by the distant lull of the waves against sheets of ice on the shore.

Fair warning: make sure to wear many layers and prepare mentally for harsh and insistent winds if visiting in the winter. The seaside is extremely cold, and unforgivingly so. But it is truly beautiful, which is why you will see many locals bundled up in their winter furs walking up and down the beach no matter the season.

5. Folk Tradition: Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs

Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs

Latvia prides itself as a “nation of singers” and fosters an important tradition of choral music and folk dancing. The language is beautifully lyrical and lends itself to melody with ease and grace.

Located in old town, with its underground brick archways and warmly lit halls, Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs is a local tavern that celebrates such heritage. Live music, traditional Latvian food and folk dancing liven the place every night. It is a popular spot amongst locals (especially students, due to their happy hour deals).

The premises were once used as ancient wine cellars, and the old vaults create a cozy medieval atmosphere, where laughter and friendly conversation can be held over delicious local draft beer.

6. The Food in Riga

Latvian potato salad

Offering cottage cheese-filled pancakes, pickled salads, potatoes and stewed meats, LIDO is a place of comfort food. It is a cantine-styled Latvian chain restaurant, very popular amongst locals for its low prices and quick service. The “medieval-folk” themed decor is quite endearing as well.

Hedgehog in the Fog (Ezītis Miglā)

Hedgehog in the Fog is another proudly Latvian franchise of cafe bars, named after an old Soviet art house animation. Popular amongst students, it offers a cozy atmosphere and an affordable menu. Choices include amazing burgers, vegetarian options and beer (the cherry beer is a personal favorite).

Hidden Gem: Muffins Muffins

Muffins Muffins is a small cafe that sells (you guessed it) muffins with a wide variety of delicious flavors. Options range from marzipan to currant and cottage cheese, or simple chocolate, all perfect for a little treat. It is a bit far from the old town, which means it is not often frequented by tourists.

Surprise Favorite: Karums

Want to try a special Latvian sweet treat? Go to the cheese section of any supermarket and look for a little package labeled Karums. In it, you will find chocolate glazed curd cheese, a sweet, smooth and creamy little treat. Originating in the Soviet Union, curd cheese bars are very popular in the Baltic states (Karums is the Lavian brand) and definitely worth a try.

Six reasons why you should visit Riga, Latvia

  • 6 reasons to visit Riga

Planning a trip to Riga? Here are some of our top picks...

Stay: Grand Poet Hotel and Spa by Semarah

Walking tour : Riga Old Town

WWII site: Salaspils Memorial Ensemble

Food tour : Latvian food tasting at the Central Market

Day trip : Sigulda and Turaida

The Latvian capital of Riga is a beautiful city to explore. However, it seems to fly under the radar compared to popular cities like London , Paris and Milan. Not many people seem to know about the city, which means that by travelling to Riga, you’ll have a larger chance of checking out the main hotspots with fewer crowds.

If you’ve never heard of Riga or haven’t considered visiting, there are many reasons why you should. As well as a charming old town, Riga boasts great nightlife and some of the most impressive architecture in Europe.

There are also some fantastic options for day trips, making it easy to explore beyond the capital city. Here are six reasons to visit Riga as soon as possible.

The House of the Blackheads and historic buildings on the square in Riga, Latvia

1. Riga has a picture-perfect Old Town

One of the best things about travelling to European destinations is the photogenic old towns. Riga is no different! If you ask me, checking out the old town of Riga is one of the must-do things in the city.

In fact, Riga's historic centre been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to the part it has played in many historical occasions in Latvia. With such an impressive history, the world heritage status is well-deserved. You'll see for yourself once you finally get to visit!

Across Old Town, you can expect to see picture-perfect cobble-stoned streets and colourful buildings (some of which date back to the 13th century). Some of the most impressive buildings in the city's old town are The Cathedral Church of Saint Mary and The House of the Blackheads. The Three Brothers, which consists of three unique buildings, are also worth adding to your itinerary.

A popular Riga cocktail, the Black Night Dancer, made with balsam and cola

2. You can find some fantastic nightlife in Riga

Another great reason to visit Riga is to make the most of its amazing nightlife! Like many destinations in Europe, the city has a thriving scene that is well worth checking out. Although it's a hit with stag and hen parties thanks to cheap booze, there is also a large selection of upmarket cocktail bars in Riga if that's something you prefer!

Riga's Old Town is one of the most convenient places for a night on the town as so many of the top bars and clubs are within walking distance of each other. It's also a great spot for a night out thanks to its variety of cosy bars, trendy establishments and rowdy nightclubs. No matter what kind of night out you are looking for, there is something for you in Riga.

Some of the coolest bars in the city are Cloud Nine and Thirsty. Black Magic is also a must-visit as it's well-known for its selection of Black Balsam cocktails - A traditional Latvian drink that you need to try whilst in the country.

Thanks to its relaxing atmosphere and array of tasty chocolates on offer, Black Magic is perhaps the finest place to grab a drink after a full day of sightseeing in the Latvian capital. It offers a much more unique vibe than the rest of the bars in Riga.

Old buildings in Art Nouveau style on Alberta Iela street. Riga, Latvia

3. Riga has impressive architecture

If you’re a fan of architecture, you simply must book a trip to Riga. With an impressive display of art nouveau architecture, Riga is home to some amazing buildings. The city's structures and churches are truly remarkable and provide a unique glimpse into the city’s history.

If you want to see the very best architectural gems in the Latvian capital, you need to head outside of the old town. A must-visit place to admire the architecture in Riga is Alberta Iela Street. This particular street is busting at the brim with art nouveau influences which means that buildings here are adorned with stained glass windows, statues, mosaics and ornate details.

The street is known for being the most well-preserved street of art nouveau architecture across the whole continent of Europe. If you want to discover more about this remarkable street, head to the Riga Art Nouveau Museum. Here you can learn more about the architects who designed these buildings as well as what the interiors look like.

Colourful buildings in Riga, Latvia

4. There are fewer tourists in Riga

Before my recent trip to Riga, I was quite surprised to discover that many people seem quite unaware of the city. Despite being a European capital, several people I spoke with had never heard of it.

Because of this, you’re bound to see fewer tourists if you decide to travel to Riga. Compared to other European gems such as Rome , Lisbon and Athens , you’ll see barely any travellers as you explore the city.

This makes it easy to visit attractions, take photos with no other people and grab a table at popular restaurants. This is highly convenient and, in my opinion, one of the very best reasons to visit Riga.

Snow on the Christmas Markets in Riga, Latvia

5. Riga is beautiful at Christmas

Did you know that Riga has a unique festive history? Legend has it that the world's first decorated Christmas tree was displayed in Riga Old Town way back in 1510. While there may be some disagreement from some of the other Baltic states, it's still a pretty cool story.

Nowadays, Riga's Town Hall Square is home to a beautifully decorated tree each year, making it a popular destination during the festive period. During this time, Riga holds plenty of activities for travellers to make the most of.

In addition to the Christmas markets (which typically run from late November to Early January) and decorations, you can also get involved in traditional Latvian holiday events. These include attending Christmas-inspired performances at the Latvian National Opera or enjoying a cup of warm mulled wine at a local cafe.

The city's vibrant nightlife scene is also a must-see, with many bars and clubs hosting unforgettable Christmas-themed events. Whether you're looking for a festive family-friendly experience or a night out with pals, Riga has something for everyone at Christmas time! This means that if you’re a big fan of Christmas, you may want to book a trip there this December.

Turaida Castle and gardens in Sigulda, Latvia

6. You can explore more of Latvia from Riga

To truly appreciate what a country has to offer, I always recommend travelling beyond the capital city. This gives you the chance to delve deeper into the culture, explore the countryside and get to know the country beyond the tourist hotspots.

From Riga, there are many incredible places just a short drive or train ride away. This makes it easy to explore more of Latvia. Here are a few places to consider:

Firstly, you could plan a trip to Sigulda. This picture-perfect village is just an hour away from central Riga by car or you can do an organised day trip . If you’re travelling via public transport, you can get there in less than 90 minutes.

Dubbed the "Switzerland of Latvia," Sigulda offers jaw-dropping scenery and an array of activities to enjoy. Once you’ve had your adrenaline fix, take a wander through the Gauja National Park . Here you can check out the hiking trails, caves, and even a historical castle. This is a must-see spot for the more adventurous among you.

Another option when it comes to day trips from Riga is the beach town of Jurmala . Situated just 30 minutes away from the city by train, it’s one of the most convenient options. This coastal destination is known for its great beaches, making it an ideal place to relax and soak up the sunshine.

Once you’re done chilling out, stroll down Jomas Street. Here you can check out several restaurants, cafes and shops. If you’re looking for a bit of culture, check out the Dzintari Concert Hall, which hosts concerts and events throughout the year. Overall, Jurmala offers a great mix of relaxing vibes, unique history and cultural experiences - making it a perfect day trip from Riga.

If you’re thinking of visiting Latvia, then check out these 8 major don’ts of Latvia that you need to know:

1. Don’t disrespect Latvia’s nature

don'ts of Latvia

One of the biggest don’ts of Latvia is that when visiting Latvia, it is important to remember to respect the country’s pristine environment .

Latvia is home to some of the world’s most untouched natural beauty , and it is important to take time during your trip to appreciate and enjoy it. Latvia boasts an incredible array of nature to explore, from its stunning shorelines and pristine forests to its vivid flower meadows and vibrant sparkling creeks.

It is important to be mindful of your impact on the environment when visiting, as Latvia’s untouched beauty is something that should be celebrated and preserved. Whether it’s picking up after yourself in the great outdoors, minimizing litter, or refraining from disturbing wildlife, be sure to show your respect for this special part of the world.

2. Don’t make eye contact for no reason

As a tourist in Latvia, you should be aware that it is considered somewhat rude to make eye contact for no reason .

Latvians are usually quite reserved with strangers , and making direct eye contact with them can be deemed as somewhat intrusive. It’s best to be respectful of the local culture and avoid large or intense stares at strangers.

If you’re engaging in conversation with a Latvian, direct eye contact is fine , but make sure to remain respectful throughout the conversation. Latvians are usually very conservative and value courtesy and politeness, so it is best to be mindful of their cultural values when visiting.

3. Don’t visit Latvia without trying any Latvian food!

don'ts of Latvia

When visiting Latvia, another one of the biggest don’ts is forgetting to give Latvian food a try. There are a wide variety of delicious and unique dishes to discove r, so make sure they’re on your menu while travelling.

Latvian cuisine is hearty and tasty , often featuring fish, pork, and fresh vegetables. Popular dishes include potato pancakes, fried pork neck, and traditional rye bread with garlic and kvass soup.

Latvian comfort food is something not to be missed – and you’ll be wanting to visit Latvia again just for the food !

4. Don’t forget to learn a bit of Latvian

When visiting Latvia, it is polite to learn a few phrases of Latvian . Although English is widely spoken throughout the country, the locals will appreciate the gesture and effort that comes with earnestly attempting to converse in their native language.

There are a variety of online and offline resources available to learn some basics before arriving. It doesn’t take too much time and effort to come prepared with several key phrases , and the locals will appreciate the courtesy.

Learning a bit of Latvian will also help visitors to better understand the culture and to connect with the locals more authentically. Show your respect for the country by taking the time to learn a few phrases before visiting .

5. Don’t just stay in Riga

don'ts of Latvia

When visiting Latvia, don’t just stay in Riga – explore other places too ! Latvia is home to some incredible attractions outside of the capital city.

Whether you’re interested in culture, outdoor activities, nature, or historical sites, Latvia offers something for everyone .

Step into a different world as you explore the stunning tangle of Old City streets in Liepaja, the sandy beaches of Liepaja, or the quaint villages throughout the country. Latvia has everything from picturesque pastoral landscapes to historical settlements, so make sure to take the time to explore what other parts of the country have to offer.

6. Don’t comment on Latvian-Russian relations

As a tourist in Latvia, it is important not to comment on Latvian-Russian relations . Latvia has a complex and often difficult relationship with Russia, so it is best to avoid bringing up the topic of politics while there.

As Latvians are proud of their country, tourists should be sure to show the same respect for Latvian politics that they would expect in their own country . Instead of discussing the relationship between the two countries, focus instead on enjoying the beauty of Latvian culture together.

7. Don’t forget to cover up when visiting churches

Don'ts of Latvia

When visiting Latvian churches, it’s important not to forget to cover up and wear respectful clothing . Most Latvians are very religious, and the church is an important part of their culture.

To show proper respect and courtesy, tourists should dress modestly and cover up while visiting Latvian churches. This usually includes wearing long clothing to cover arms and legs, and removing headwear such as hats and sunglasses.

It is important to remember that Latvian churches are sacred grounds , so visitors should always dress appropriately and show respect.

8. Don’t enter a bar or restaurant where the prices aren’t on the menu

When visiting Latvia, it is important not to enter bars or restaurants without knowing the prices first .

In order to avoid being scammed, tourists should always ask about menu prices before ordering – sometimes restaurants may have hidden fees or unexpectedly high prices. This could lead to a difficult (and expensive) situation for the tourist.

By remembering to ask questions, it can help you avoid getting scammed while still enjoying the delicious Latvian cuisine. Always be sure to ask about the prices before entering a bar or restaurant.

Latvia FAQ:

Yes, Latvians are generally friendly to foreigners, although their reserved nature can make them seem slightly aloof initially. However, socializing with Latvians usually leads to a welcoming atmosphere, and locals are more than happy to help out travellers who take the time to get to know them.

Latvian people are known for their resilient and independent nature, as well as their strong traditions and customs. Latvians have a deep respect for the land and nature, making them environmentally-minded and excellent stewards of their homeland. A strongly-embedded sense of nationalism also runs through Latvian culture, and the people are proud of their heritage and history.

Yes, Riga is safe for female tourists, although it is always wise to exercise caution. The city is generally very safe, but as with any destination, it is best to stay aware of your surroundings and take common-sense safety precautions. It is also advised to avoid walking alone at night, particularly if you are unfamiliar with the area.
