Brantz Trip meter sensor

brantz trip meter calibration

  • Add to quote

I see Brantz sell a sensor that connects into the electric speedometer sensor ('dividing prescaler interface' is what they call it), which can then be used to calibrate and run the trip meter. Anyone have any experience of these electronic sensors? I've been using the standard wheel sensor up until now and its seriously unreliable!

I have one in a road car for 3 years and use it for organising events, works like a dream:caution:

Wereyou using the wheel sensor or the electronic sensor that connects into the speedo?

the electronic card is brilliant job, perfect all the time, 2nd best would be a gearbox probe

I also don’t think they are as accurate and are susceptible to false readings from wheel spin etc. Similarly for using a hall effect sensor on any ‘driven’ part of the drive train as wheel spin affects the accuracy. I chose to put a sensor in the rear brake drum, reading off the wheels stud heads as they go past. I have a sensor in each drum and a switch to swap between them, so if one fails I still have trip. Ideally I should calibrate the trip to each one for each event, but I’ll admit I never go that far.

Is there any special reason why you want a wheel sensor ?

The "adapter" which fits between the gearbox and the spedo cable works well.

Just out of interest:-   Somebody used to make one with a trigger on the diff Hardy Spicer (Gosh, that's showing my age )

spoke to Brantz today and they are having difficulty getting the adapters made, so thought as a have a wheel sensor i would see if anyone had fitted one.

Wouldn't you always put the sensor on the back to reduce inaccuracies associated with wheel spin?

:-)

Is it a magnetic style pickup unit?  For my modern Alfa rally computer I drilled a hole through the rear brake backing plate, put the pickup unit there and glued the magnet to the backside of the hub - kept everything pretty safe from stones, etc.

Agree with the above - fit it to the back wheel.   I use a sensor through the backplate picking up on the rear of the wheel studs.

I run one in each rear wheel with the Brantz input switchable between the two, should one fail (however to fully benefit from this you need to establish that the calibration is the same for both, or calibrate each side against the measured mile and make a note of the correction factors needed).

Goede Avond,

I use the " Brantz International 2 Pro rally trip meter " ind was wondering what others with these meters use for the signaal input.

I used to have magnets on the hand brake drum - but with the new set up, that's not an option.

There is no drum..

Suggestions please !

I've stuck speedo magnets to the transfer box flange with no problems.

Thank you !

:)

On the back face of the flange, transfer box side, if you see what I mean?

I’ve got the basic Terratrip model, which I had on my Series, and which took s signal from the Speedo cable. (I cut it in half and clipped the sensor between the two halves.) Then I transferred the Terratrip to my 90, and cutting the speedo cable wasn’t an option for me, so I attached a piece of flat steel about the size of my little finger to the prop shaft bolts. You can get a proximity sensor which takes a signal every time the prop shaft rotates. Assume there must be something similar for the Brantz.

P.S. I bolted the proximity sensor to the top of the transfer box, again using a small bracket made from the same flat steel.

Cutting the speedo cable is a good opton - I'll have a look at the sensors...

Item number T006 on www.terratrip.com

I used the T005 wheel sensor, but set up as described to take a reading from the propshaft. Not my idea - credit goes to Terratrip, way back in 2001!

Thank You Very much !
