Paul McCartney Performs At The SSE Hydro Glasgow

Paul McCartney is back in action.

The former Beatles frontman announced his first tour since 2019 , entitled “Got Back.”

The concert will kick off in April in Washington and run through June.

“I said at the end of the last tour that I’d see you next time,” the 79-year-old said in a press release. “I said I was going to get back to you. Well, I got back!”

The British rocker’s latest album, “McCartney III,” was released in 2020.

The companion record “McCartney III Imagined” dropped last year and featured collaborators such as Beck, Dominic Fike, Phoebe Bridgers, Anderson .Paak, Robert Del Naja and Idris Elba.

While the musician is a fan of his musical tours, he’s not so much one of giving out autographs to fans.

John Lennon, Paul McCartney,

He revealed in an interview with  “Reader’s Digest”  in November that he doesn’t like to take selfies or sign autographs anymore because he finds it quite “strange.”

“‘Here,” the father of five said. “Can I write your name down on the back of this till receipt please? We both know who I am.”

“What you’ve usually got is a ropey photo with a poor backdrop and me looking a bit miserable,” he continued. “Let’s chat, let’s exchange stories.”

McCartney’s statements echoed his ex-bandmate Ringo Starr, who said in 2008 he  would stop signing autographs  because of his busy schedule. “I’m warning you with peace and love. I have too much to do, so no more fan mail,” Starr, 81, said at the time. “And no objects to be signed. Nothing! Anyway, peace and love, peace and love.”

When Starr was  asked by Howard Stern  in 2018 about his decision, the drummer explained, “That was one angry moment. In New York, actually, I was signing scratch plates that they have on guitars, and someone said, ‘Have you seen on the internet?’ There’s a guitar with my signature on a scratch plate.”

Penned on the Run: ‘GOT BACK’ Tour 2022 Part 1

'Penned On The Run' graphic featuring Steve Martin

“I said at the end of the last tour that I’d see you next time. I said I was going to get back to you. Well, I got back!” - Paul

By the time you’re reading this, Paul will have more than made good on that promise—made July 13, 2019 from the stage of Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles following the final encore of Paul's now legendary closer of the U.S. leg of his  Freshen Up tour.    No one could have possibly foreseen what a long and winding road it would be to that next gig — that  Freshen Up’s 2020 run would fall victim to the COVID-19 shutdown, effectively promoting Dodger Stadium from the last of  Freshen Up ’s U.S. leg to the finale of the entire 39-date 12-country world tour.     The last few years, as strange and difficult as they’ve been, were anything but an idle time for Paul. The  McCartney III album was written, performed and produced by Paul in “Rockdown," its December 2020 release completing a classic trilogy of eponymous all-Paul efforts including  McCartney (1970) and  McCartney II (1980)—and reinterpreted in its entirety by a Paul-curated array of top shelf artists as  McCartney III Imagined , released April 2021. In July, Paul offered up an unprecedented deep dive into his creative process with the  McCartney 3,2,1 series. And as if all that weren’t enough, Paul published not one but two books in 2021: September seeing the publication of  Grandude’s Green Submarine , the second in Paul’s much-loved children’s book series featuring the titular character, before topping the bestsellers lists with the Barnes & Noble Book of the Year award-winning  The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present , published in November 2021… and then there was a certain Peter Jackson docuseries just in time for the holidays — but more on that later…    Speculation as to when Paul would be getting back to the road would reach a fever pitch by early 2022, coming to an abrupt and joyous conclusion with the February 18 announcement of the  GOT BACK  tour, Paul’s 13-city return to U.S. stages, opening April 28 with Paul’s first-ever show in…

Photo of the Crowd at Paul's Opening Night show at Spokane Arena, April 28th 2022.

All eyes and ears were tuned on Spokane for the lead up to the tour opener. The charming city in eastern Washington - aka the Lilac City or Hooptown USA, known for Gonzaga Athletics to the largest urban waterfalls, among many other attractions and landmarks - would soon be forever known as the place where Paul McCartney GOT BACK. The anticipation was palpable, radiating from the Spokane Arena throughout streets adorned with “Welcome Paul” banners, from the local media frenzy — which ranged from heartwarming features on fans and families counting down the days to local TV covering the massive crowd lining up early day of show — some even catching a quick wave and smile from Paul along with the elated scrum swarming the arena’s back entrance to catch his arrival.

And just like that, just past 8:00pm local time, Spokane was transformed into the center of the universe to the thousands bearing witness to Paul stepping onto their local arena’s stage for the first time, as he raised a fist in triumph before leading the band into the indelible instant singalong of ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’. The barely more than two minutes of the opening number flashed by like so many seconds — disbelief that what’s happening before one’s own eyes and ears will do that — followed in quick succession by a rollicking ‘Junior’s Farm’. A warm hello to the Spokane crowd led into ‘Letting Go’, a muscular take on the Wings classic that saw the Hot City Horns rejoining Paul, Wix, Abe, Rusty and Brian on stage for the first time since that aforementioned 2019  Freshen Up  finale. ‘Got To Get You Into My Life’ takes things higher still, while ‘Come On To Me’ mines a particularly heavy groove, winding down with Paul doffing his smart blue jacket to the delighted screams of Spokane’s female population, for the customary only wardrobe change of the evening.

As Paul peeled off the riff to ‘Let Me Roll It’, sounding as fresh as the first time anyone in tonight’s crowd ever heard it, the  GOT BACK  tour opener continued to unfold in a literal blur of highlights—including some surprises and firsts…

‘Getting Better’ returned to the setlist for the first time in nearly 20 years, the capacity crowd singalong of “It’s getting better all the time” imbued with additional significance in the context of tonight’s spiritual reunion.

‘Women and Wives’ would become the first track from  McCartney III  to make the transformation into a soulful live rendering.

A mind-blowing arrangement from the Abbey Road medley jumping straightaway into ‘You Never Give Me Your Money’ at the lyrical juncture "Out of college, money spent…” and building to a climactic ‘She Came In Through The Bathroom Window’.

The journey described by local paper of record the Spokesman-Review as “an evening of endless highlights" continued with a rapturously received parade of old, new and in-between selections from the Macca songbook— every note suffused with heightened emotion via the sheer miracle of sharing this experience with thousands of fellow humans, all reunited in song. ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ simply soared. ‘Love Me Do’ elicited a formidable vintage Beatles scream. ‘Blackbird’ took on a new dimension in the Black Lives Matter era. ‘Get Back’ made a triumphant return to the main set, joyfully enhanced with footage of Fab Four studio shenanigans assembled by Peter Jackson from his docuseries of the same name.

Speaking of Peter Jackson, the  Get Back  auteur helped deliver possibly the most magical moment of an already wholly unforgettable evening. Having just bounded back onto the stage waving a Ukrainian flag and with a promise of something special coming right up, Paul kicked off the encore by picking out the iridescent opening phrase of ‘I’ve Got A Feeling’. “Something a bit special” was quickly rendered the understatement of the year, as John Lennon’s voice rang out in crystal clarity — isolated from the actual recordings of The Beatles’ 1969 final live performance on the Apple rooftop, enabling Paul and the band to sing and play joined by John. What transpired has since been described as everything from a virtual duet to a technological miracle, and it left nary a dry eye — or mask — in the house.

With echoes of the closing refrain of ‘The End’ still reverberating, Paul noted that we had all quite literally GOT BACK. This simple truth was answered with a particular roar from the crowd, as if everyone in attendance were having the collective realization of what they’d experienced together: For now and always, they were there the night Paul GOT BACK to bringing his music to life again.

And on that note, westward we go to…

is paul mccartney going on tour in 2022

A measure of how time flies: in the six years since Paul last visited the Emerald City, the venue he played—the Key Arena—has been razed and replaced by the sparkling new Climate Pledge Arena. Perhaps it was the sonic vibrations of Paul’s 2016 encore featuring Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic on a monolithic twin-bass-attack rendition of ‘Helter Skelter’ that compromised the Key’s foundations?  Whatever the case, Paul is back in Washington’s biggest city for the first time in more than half a decade and the nearly 20,000 a night attending — a notably diverse lot, one local alternative weekly The Stranger observed “was respectful and downright worshipful, and skewed much younger than expected" — are united in their love for all things Paul.

And Paul has plenty of love for Seattle, going all the way back to 1964 when The Beatles played the Seattle Center Coliseum—another venue that once stood on this same site, and where Paul first sang tonight’s opener ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ for a Seattle audience. Another example is tonight’s searing rendition of the traditional ‘Foxy Lady’ coda to ‘Let Me Roll It’, Paul’s red-hot licks on the red Les Paul channeling the spirit of the Pacific Northwest’s deity of the six-string—and fellow leftie—Jimi Hendrix. Paul paid further tribute by regaling the crowd with a tale of UK rock royalty attending Hendrix’s London debut, a show Jimi opened with ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ mere days after the release of the original. Elsewhere during Paul’s first night at the now preeminent Seattle arena, ‘New’ received its first airing of the tour — its enthusiastic reception in the form of a galaxy of phone cameras, defying the typical “new song = black hole” pattern Paul has humorously observed since the dawn of the smartphone era. The even newer ‘Fuh You’ fared similarly well with the phone cam-wielders — even sandwiched between a positively jubilant ‘Lady Madonna’ and psychedelic tour de force ‘Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite’!

is paul mccartney going on tour in 2022

Later ‘Let It Be’ would find the arena fully awash in mobile phone illumination, while ‘Live And Let Die’ had Paul and the boys returning the favor with pyrotechnic salvos, fireworks, lasers and flash bangs. The show culminated, as always, in that greatest singalong in rock history, ‘Hey Jude’—a communion that, on this night, moved the Seattle Times to observe, "Glancing around at the multigenerational faces na-na-na’ing in unison, it was one of those one of those arena-show moments that make you feel like everyone on the planet is vibing out to the same song at exactly the same time".

Following a well-deserved and even more well-received encore opening with the Seattle debut of the ‘I’ve Got A Feeling’ virtual McCartney/Lennon duet (“It blows my mind every time I see that,” says Paul) and ending with, naturally, ‘The End’, the Hot City Horns convened on the loading dock ramp to play Paul off with a victory lap brass band take on ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ (Nirvana-na-na, anyone? Thank you, I’ll be here all week...) and it’s onto night two...

The May 3 Seattle setlist featured some second-night reshuffling, with ‘Let ‘Em In’ and ‘We Can Work It Out’ making their GOT BACK tour debuts, replacing ‘Women and Wives’ and ‘I’ve Just Seen a Face’ from the previous night. Later, a jaunty ‘Queenie Eye’ would be back in the slot occupied by ‘New’ the night before, ably upping the tempo as Paul descended from the elevated platform on which he rises for solo acoustic performances of ‘Blackbird’ and ‘Here Today’.

Paul and the band have clearly settled in for night two in Seattle, seamless segues like a swoon-inducing ‘My Valentine’ into the raucous stomp of a killer Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five’ abound. And the in-song transition from Paul on ukulele and voice to the full band on ‘Something’ packed a particular wallop this evening, the audio and visual tributes to George Harrison resonating with the multigenerational throng (which ranged from 20-somethings taking their presumably first Macca show selfies to a superfan brandishing a sign proclaiming tonight their 126th Paul concert—and from baby boomers to an actual baby (!).

Alas all good things must come to an end—in this case that being an incendiary encore featuring a rollicking ‘Birthday’ and a pinned-in-the-red ‘Helter Skelter’—and it’s the close of the latest chapter in Paul’s long and storied history with Seattle, and time to head down the coast to…

is paul mccartney going on tour in 2022

Paul has no shortage of historic touchstones with the Bay Area. From The Beatles’ 1966 final concert at Candlestick Park to Paul’s 2014 Last Pick at the Stick show shortly after which the storied ballpark was demolished, just to name a few, Paul’s relationship with the region runs deep—and includes multiple recent landmark gigs between the Candlestick bookends, such as 2010 at AT&T Park on the  Up & Coming  tour and Paul's 2013 headline set at the Outside Lands festival in Golden Gate Park during the  Out There  tour.

However, Paul last stepped onto a stage in Oakland proper for the 2002 opener of the Driving World tour — the first McCartney tour of the current century, and one that ended a near-10-year gap between Paul tours itself. The fact that Paul’s May 6 show would be his first Oakland appearance in 20 years struck a chord with the local populace, who quickly snapped up every ticket, leading to the announcement of a second Oakland Arena date to take place May 8. What better Mother’s Day gift…!

The significance of Paul’s return to Oakland following this 20-year absence was not lost on him on night one, as he remarked, “Good evening, Oakland. We are very happy to be back here after a long interlude.” And noting another Bay Area milestone, Paul noted that his previous Oakland show in 2002 was his first with his longtime band of Wix, Rusty, Abe and Brian: “Happy birthday to us!”

And yes, ‘Birthday’ would be played some two-hours-plus later, Paul’s dedication to everyone having a birthday tonight (or anytime this year) presumably including his own band on this unique occasion. Highlights of Paul’s long-awaited return to Oakland would range from songs that Paul played for the first time in that same city some 20 years past—including ‘Getting Better’, ‘Here Today’, and ‘Something’—to a good helping of songs released during that 20-year interlude debuting before Oakland eyes and ears—such as ‘Come On To Me’, ‘Women And Wives’, ‘Dance Tonight’, ‘New’ and ‘Fuh You’.

The audience response was uniformly warm and ecstatic, with the stripped down “blues shack” portion of tonight’s show a notable yardstick of the evolution of this band over the last two decades. From the boys’ sublime harmonizing on ‘In Spite Of All The Danger’ to Wix’s harmonica on ‘Love Me Do’ to Abe’s one-man dance party, ahem, choreography on ‘Dance Tonight’, this was a masterclass in the benefits of two decades of musical camaraderie, chemistry, and good old-fashioned road work.

All told, night four was yet another magical evening on the GOT BACK tour—one the Mercury News described as "an absolute joy to behold, as Sir Paul jogged memories and warmed hearts during a marathon show that ran some 2 hours and 40 minutes,” while the San Francisco Chronicle raved "Paul McCartney’s explosive return to Oakland worth the wait for Bay Area fans… Throw in some pyrotechnics, a catalog of timeless classics, and McCartney’s boundless energy on stage, and it’s easy to understand why fans — whether getting their first dose of Macca or, as one sign in the crowd boasted, their 124th — leave his shows in a state of elation.”

All of which begs the question: how does one follow that? To anyone who’s ever seen two Paul McCartney shows knows the answer, namely to give another adoring audience yet another singular and unforgettable near-three-hours of music, memories, love, hope and positivity—and in the case, a very special Mother’s Day.

From the call out to “… mothers and men…” in the lyrics of ‘Women and Wives’ early in the evening to ‘My Valentine’, ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’, ‘Lady Madonna’ and of course ‘Let It Be’, the influence of the mothers in Paul’s life and lyrics cannot be overstated. So it’s only natural that the second Oakland show added due to overwhelming popular demand would take place on Mother’s Day, adding yet another dimension of the GOT BACK experience to those fortunate enough to attend with their mothers. And for the rest of us, there are the equally undeniable waves of joy that accompany moments like tonight’s return of ‘I’ve Just Seen A Face’ to the live set, a deafening audience singalong to ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da’, the odyssey that ‘Band On The Run’ sweeps us into, and the always poignant closing lines of ‘The End’ followed as ever by Paul’s promise that he’ll see us all again… and that’s more than enough.

Next up, Los Angeles… we’re getting back to you!

LOS ANGELES:

is paul mccartney going on tour in 2022

It’s impossible to imagine more imposing concert venue — or possibly a more intimidating physical structure of any kind — than Los Angeles’s monolithic SoFi Stadium. Resembling nothing so much as a gigantic alien spacecraft, SoFi occupies a near-300 acre footprint in Inglewood, its sleek ultra-modern seemingly aerodynamic exterior crowned with a literal million-square-foot canopy.    And as if that sheer physical intimidation weren’t enough, there was the challenge of following Paul's aforementioned Dodger Stadium blowout in 2019. The now-legendary show that closed  Freshen Up  in the U.S., and eventually became the finale of the entire tour, had only grown in stature in the three years since, with local and national media alike giving up unanimous raves from “Macca continues to put artists half his age and younger to shame with epic shows” (Entertainment Weekly) to “McCartney was in top form” (Los Angeles Times) to “McCartney remains a show-stopping entertainer of the highest order” to, simply and eloquently, "Wow” (American Songwriter)—and mere days prior to Paul’s SoFi date, Los Angeles magazine rated Dodger Stadium 2019 in its list of "McCartney’s Top 5 Greatest Performances in L.A.."    So… no pressure, right? Well, what would surely break the brains and bodies of us mere mortals is, at most, another hard day’s night for Paul McCartney. For the first stadium gig of the  GOT BACK tour, it was apparent from the moment Paul and the band careened into ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ that the 50,000 of us lucky to pack SoFi this most auspicious Friday the 13th that history was unfolding before our eyes and ears. ‘Junior’s Farm’ featured Rusty and Brian’s dueling leads in white-hot form, ‘Letting Go’ first brought out the Hot City Horns to pump things up for a stretch that included ‘Got To Get You Into My Life’ and ‘Come On To Me’. The production seemed to grow before our eyes, as massive lighting trusses repositioned as if with minds of their own during a ripping ‘Let Me Roll It’, and later on numbers including the newly arranged Abbey Road double-shot of ‘You Never Give Me Your Money’ and ‘She Came In Through The Bathroom Window’.    ‘Getting Better’ led an impassioned “Better, Better, Better…” singalong, while a spirited ‘Let ‘Em In’ practically got tens of thousands marching in place. ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ was transcendent, followed by the return of ‘We Can Work It Out’ to the running order. ‘Blackbird’ and ‘Here Today’ found Paul filling the sprawling SoFi bowl from his elevated platform, holding the capacity crowd in rapt attention with only his voice and acoustic guitar. The "2 ½-hour survey of crackling riffs, honeyed harmonies” (Los Angeles Times) never let up, punctuated by the tender George Harrison tribute ‘Something’ and a predictably rowdy call-and-response portion of ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da’, while a turbo-charged ‘Get Back’ kicked off the home stretch of the main set.     It’s no exaggeration to say that virtually every moment of Paul’s return to L.A. was a highlight. His voice rang strong and clear throughout, bolstered by an impeccable sound mix as well lighting and production that would transform the massive SoFi interior: creating an intimate roadhouse vibe for ‘In Spite Of All The Danger’, ‘Love Me Do’ and ‘Dance Tonight’, only to drive home the point that we were witnessing Paul in complete and total command of the largest stadium in the NFL—and what better way to do the latter than to threaten to blow the roof off the place: ‘Live And Let Die’ was nothing short of breathtaking sensory overload, the pyrotechnic-fireworks combo seemingly on steroids, with columns of flame shooting the better part of the 275 feet to the SoFi ceiling.    As the last blast of ‘Live And Let Die’ faded, Paul made his way to the magic piano to cast the spell that is ‘Hey Jude’. It’s nights like this that the undisputed singalong champion of rock history takes on an even deeper resonance. There’s a wellspring of love and optimism that can only be tapped, a magical emotional rainbow that can only be conjured by Paul McCartney leading an enraptured chorus of 50,000 voices in an extended refrain of “Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Na”—it is truly impossible to put into words “the feels” (as the kids say) that are generated as those syllables become the most profound in the world.    The encore opened with ‘I’ve Got A Feeling’ amplifying the marvel of the McCartney-Lennon virtual duet to stadium scale with stunning results, and closed as ever with ‘The End’ — spurring a crowd reaction that would be expressed in writing by the OC Register: “Its signature line – 'The love you take is equal to the love you make' – is always powerful. On this night, when all we really needed was the comfort of a Beatle on stage, still making beautiful music, it felt ever more so.” And with early notices in, it’s clear that the press felt the same Macca magic as the fans—with critical reactions including:

is paul mccartney going on tour in 2022

“… as an icon what McCartney gets is that people crave art that makes magic from their everyday experiences… a 2 ½-hour survey of crackling riffs, honeyed harmonies and the kind of deep-seated emotional optimism that led him to accompany 'Getting Better' on Friday with a video that depicted flowers springing up through the rubble of a post-apocalyptic landscape…  a chance to behold someone still out there doing it at an extremely high level — and, of course, to live inside his songs for an evening. And, oh, those glorious songs…”—Los Angeles Times

"McCartney gave fans what many of his songs have always provided: The idea that with love and peace and hopeful feelings the hard times will get better… McCartney is ever the ageless lad from Liverpool. His voice is clear and stronger than most any of his peers who still play live. That innate musical ability, that many marveled at in Peter Jackson’s recent docuseries 'Get Back’... is undimmed as McCartney effortlessly switched from bass to guitar, piano to mandolin and ukulele throughout the night.” —OC Register

"Let’s cut to the chase. If you haven’t seen Paul McCartney live before, go see him. Please. Heck, even if you have seen him before, go see him again. If you need someone to give you a reason why, think of it as going to see the Grand Canyon or Michelangelo’s David in Florence. No matter what you think the experience will be, actually being there in their presence, with all five senses taking in the moment, is precisely the thing that makes being alive worth it. Paul McCartney is Yosemite or Banff or the Eifel Tower. He’s music’s greatest national park, its remaining 7th Wonder Of The World.” —Uproxx

"He has been, by some almost objective measures, the best all-around singer as well as most accomplished mainstream songwriter of the rock ‘n’ roll era… But make no mistake — he’s going for the notes he’s always gone for, and hitting them, without the usual accommodations powerhouse singers have to make as they reach an advanced age. He still howls… As much as McCartney made history with the Beatles 60 years ago, it feels like he’s making history again in pushing the envelope of how long you can keep doing this kind of a massive, demanding show...” —Variety

“From the sublimely joyous opening of the Beatles' ‘Can't Buy Me Love,’ McCartney delivers two hours plus of happiness, faith and love. And he does it with an earnestness that is beyond admirable…The main set ends, as always, with the jubilant sing along of ‘Hey Jude,’ forever one of the most powerful live moments you can experience... It is joyful, spiritual, life affirming, chill-inducing and a bucket list moment in life… the eternal optimism of McCartney is even more appreciated and necessary in 2022 than ever before.” —Forbes

Finally, in this era of rampant disinformation and clickbait, it’s refreshing, comforting even, to see even the headlines shouting the unbiased truth:

"Paul McCartney is still our most charming rock god” — Los Angeles Times

"Paul McCartney’s ‘Got Back’ Tour Scores a Touchdown With Marathon SoFi Stadium Show” — Variety

"Proof he was the coolest Beatle all along” — The Independent

And with that, GOT BACK would be off to Fort Worth… Stay tuned!

Paul McCartney will launch a 13-city U.S. tour in April — his first since 2019 — with a May 13 stop at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium on the roster.

The tour concludes on June 16 at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, the sole New York City-area stop and McCartney’s first visit to MetLife since 2016.

Paul McCartney’s ‘Got Back’ Tour Scores a Touchdown With Marathon SoFi Stadium Show: Concert Review

Paul McCartney at the Paul McCartney Got Back Tour performance held at SoFi Stadium on May 13th, 2022 in Los Angeles, California.

Paul McCartney has something to prove. What that is is between him and his shrink, although maybe a desire to seem and feel undiminished is not as mysterious as all that. What we do know for certain is that, in the year of our lord 2022, McCartney is doing two-hour-and-40-minute sets that encompass 36 songs. If this seems at all slacker-ish, consider also that the singer is keeping with his touring custom of recent years and doing more informal, hour-long, 8-to-13-song “soundchecks” before the doors open for fans who buy VIP packages, something that puts him stage close to four hours each show day.

Unspoken at Friday night’s SoFi Stadium show in L.A., and un-alluded to in even the slightest way — even though Beatlemaniacs have it marked on their calendars for next month — is that he turns 80 next month, two days after the tour wraps up. It may be unfair to compare the ways in which different performers age, but it’s worth pointing out that McCartney is doing these fairly marathon shows at a point in his life that is past the point at which Frank Sinatra did his final concert, following a few years of publicly noted erraticism. And yet here we are at a point where, for him anyway, 80 seems to be the new July-or-August of his years. No one would begrudge McCartney, or very few would, if he cut a few corners: cutting the set length to a reasonable two hours here, lowering the keys a little there, or dropping some of the vocal ad libs to save his voice for Syracuse. But McCartney is not about to use impending octogenarianism as a rationale to finally half-ass it. In fact, he’s not even going to three-quarters-ass it.

Of course, SoFi Stadium was filled with repeat customers — veterans of “Wings Over America” at the Forum in ’76 if not the Beatles at the Bowl in ’64 — but you didn’t have to look too far to see the sight of a 20-ish kid attending with a 75-ish grandfather, or even groups of proactive Gen-Z-ers that didn’t need boomer chaperones to see the value in coming. Whatever else might motivate McCartney to prove it all night, he’s surely aware that the “Got Back” tour is the only live experience of his or the Beatles’ music that these younger attendees will have in their lifetimes, and they’re not going to be grading it on a curve. That’s up to the oldsters: Were there enough deep ’70s cuts in the setlist? Is his voice what it was on the 2003 tour? But it’s hard to imagine too many people who were experiencing this as their first or only McCartney show not walking away with some deep feels they may feel compelled to tell their own grandkids about.

Popular on Variety

The show here largely follows the template established by the 2019 tour, so anyone who caught the tour finale at Dodger Stadium in July of that year but missed SoFi doesn’t have to worry they missed out on too major a variation on the previous iteration. But McCartney didn’t really design the show with double-dippers in mind; L.A. is one of very few markets he hit in ’19 that he’s coming back to in ’22, whereas several other cities, he hasn’t played in decades (Baltimore) or at all (Spokane). Since three years ago, a number of songs have come out (gone this time are “A Hard Day’s Night,” the “Sgt. Pepper” reprise, “Eleanor Rigby,” “From Me to You,” “I’ve Just Seen a Face” and — bet you saw this one coming, or going — “Back in the U.S.S.R.”). Other have been reinserted from years and tours past (including “Getting Better,” “We Can Work It Out,” “New” and — hey, what’s this buried nugget?  — “Get Back”).

Somewhat surprisingly, “Women and Wives” is the only song from his most recent album, “McCartney III,” to be plugged into the tour, and even that was absent from the setlist at SoFi, for some reason. But maybe the reasons for underplaying “III” generally are obvious; it was a pandemic album, scaled down and clearly not designed with stadiums in mind, unlike its predecessor, “Egypt Station.” McCartney half-joked that when he plays a Beatles song it’s like a galaxy of cell-phone lights, and when he does contemporary material he peers out into a black hole. But there were no bathroom stampedes during the 21st century picks, not even for “Fuh You,” the Ryan Tedder co-write that McCartney continues to seem to love beyond all reason, despite the better recent choices available to him. (Would he take a request for “Deep, Deep Feeling” instead? No, he probably wouldn’t.)

As for older songs that haven’t been tried on tour before, McCartney isn’t doing so much of that rediscovery this go-round, although fans are getting “You Never Give Me Your Money” (last played on tour in 2003) and “She Came In Through the Bathroom Window” (only ever toured in 2005) as a medley for the first time. Maybe the true newbie in the lineup is the idea of “I’ve Got a Feeling” as a Lennon-and-McCartney encore duet, with footage and isolated audio of his late partner snipped out of the “Get Back” film by Peter Jackson for the tour’s purposes.

The loose structure of the show will also raise some deja vu for those returning from 2019: a rocking opening stretch highly reliant on ’70s rockers like “Junior’s Farm” and “Letting Go” as Act 1; a partially acoustic, “Storytellers”-like magical history tour of the Beatles’ rise as the backbone of Act 2, going all the way back to the Quarrymen’s “In Spite of All the Danger” and leading up the Lennon tribute “Here Today” and the Harrison cover “Something”; and then, letting the third hour be birthday sons, na-na-na-na-na-na-na-ing and “Abbey Road” medley-izing.

That structure indisputably works, and so, as part of a winning formula, does a band that has now been together for many more years than the Beatles ever were, guitarist Rusty Anderson, guitarist-bassist Brian Ray, keyboard player Paul “Wix” Wickens and drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. The latter player also doubles as the tour’s sole dancer, mugging up a storm behind the kit during “Dance Tonight” before finally being forced to sit down and help kick out an acoustic jam midway through the tune. Anderson and Ray do an eternally expert job of recreating parts McCartney largely did on his own on his own on his DIY records, and get to step into the shoes of Lennon and Harrison in joining in for the triplicate guitar solos of “The End.” Horns have sometimes been replicated as keyboard parts on past tours, so the sight of a real three-man horn section on selections like “Letting Go” and “Got to Get You Into My Life” was a welcome one. The real star of the show, in some ways: the Hofner bass, which McCartney not only plays for a substantial part of the show, but which has been animated for the pre-show countdown, descending on the big screen like some version of the Times Square New Year’s Eve ball, and landing like a giant version of the “2001” monolith before attendees see it in the wooden flesh.

And what of McCartney as a singer… at age 79-and-11/12ths? He has been, by some almost objective measures, the best all-around singer as well as most accomplished mainstream songwriter of the rock ‘n’ roll era — and how convenient it was during the 20th century to have both of those in one package. The catalog is set in stone, but his ability to ape Little Richard’s scream, or to navigate the eternally tricky twists of “Maybe I’m Amazed,” eternally is not something we can assume or expect. It’s just assumed that rockers can sing their classics forever, until we’re jolted awake to the fact that they cannot, as with the recent instance of videos being circulated of a certain ’80s icon who is not coming within a prayer of hitting the notes on his band’s most enduring hit anymore. Any fears that this would happen with McCartney are fortunately unfounded, so far. Which is not to say that attentive fans will not take note of and discuss inevitable balladic passages in which you will hear an interesting combination of vigor and time-wisened fragility in his voice. But make no mistake — he’s going for the notes he’s always gone for, and hitting them, without the usual accommodations powerhouse singers have to make as they reach an advanced age. He still howls . And if you listen carefully, it’s maybe a softer, less throat-ravaging version of the howl than he used to do. That’s more of a technical adjustment than anything that is going to stand in the way of anyone enjoying a balls-out resurrection of “Helter Skelter,” anyway

Yes, “Helter Skelter” is still in the set, and still as gratifying as it ever was, with McCartney maintaining his king-of-the-heap status on the precipice of an age where we used to think Chuck Berry going through the motions with a pickup band in front of a few hundred people was as good as grandfather-statesman rocking got. As much as McCartney made history with the Beatles 60 years ago, it feels like he’s making history again in pushing the envelope of how long you can keep doing this kind of a massive, demanding show (as opposed to a Dylan or a Willie, who also are out there and doing it, but with lower expectations of heightened stadium energy). Being on stage in front of 60,000 people being able to confidently coo and bellow songs that you wrote 60 years prior is not something that God wrote into the human contract, but McCartney (like the Stones and Who and not too many others) is are out to prove nature and the Almighty wrong. McCartney’s only nod to the passage of time was a final promise that “we’ll see you next time.” Do we get this privilege, at this high a performing level, again in two or three years? In six? Who knows, but for now, there’s reason to be grateful that he just can’t stop going back to the top of the slide.

“McCartney was in top form, his voice effortlessly climbing to the heights it always hit so easily back in the day…” —THE LOS ANGELES TIMES

“The total and complete immersion into MaccaLand was colorful and loud, rocking and rolling, nostalgic and present, and, above all, in the truest sense, marvelous… And, in the end, the love McCartney has taken for 60 years was equal to the love he’s made for generations.” —RELIX

“Definitely We’re Amazed by Paul McCartney’s Blowout Dodger Stadium Show… McCartney remains a show-stopping entertainer of the highest order.” —VARIETY

With songs like ‘Hey Jude’, ‘Live and Let Die’, ‘Band on the Run’, ‘Let It Be’ and so many more, the Paul McCartney live experience is everything any music lover could ever want from a rock show: Hours of the greatest moments from the last 60 years of music — dozens of songs from Paul’s solo, Wings and of course Beatles catalogues that have formed the soundtracks of our lives. Paul and his band have performed in an unparalleled range of venues and locations throughout the Americas, the UK, Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and all points between: outside the Coliseum in Rome, Moscow’s Red Square, Buckingham Palace, The White House, a free show in Mexico for over 400,000 people, the last ever show at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park where The Beatles played their final concert in 1966, a 2016 week in the California desert that included two headline sets at the historic Desert Trip festival and a jam-packed club gig for a few hundred lucky fans at Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace, and even one performance broadcast live into Space! Featuring Paul’s longtime band – Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums) – and constantly upgraded state of the art audio and video technology that ensures an unforgettable experience from every seat in the house, a Paul McCartney concert is never anything short of life-changing.

Paul McCartney sets 2022 ‘Got Back’ tour, with shows in L.A., Oakland and more. Here are all the dates

Paul McCartney is ready to get back on the road again.

The former Beatle on Friday announced his 13-city U.S. “Got Back” concert tour, which begins at the Spokane Arena in Washington on April 28 and concludes at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. on June 16. That is just two days before McCartney’s 80th birthday.

At this point, the itinerary includes two California dates — May 6 in Oakland and May 13 in Los Angeles, where McCartney and his band will perform at SoFi Stadium, the site of last week’s NFL Super Bowl game and hip-hop celebrating halftime show.

There is a six-day gap without any performances between McCartney’s upcoming Oakland and Los Angeles concerts. The gap suggests he could add an extra West Coast tour stop or two during that period.

His most recent San Diego concert was in July 2019 at Petco Park, where the tireless rock legend delivered a rollicking, 38-song marathon performance. “Got Back” is his first tour since that 2019 concert trek, which included 39 performances in 12 countries and concluded at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

“I said at the end of the last tour that I’d see you next time. I said I was going to get back to you. Well, I got back!” McCartney said in a statement issued Friday morning.

His “Got Back” tour will follow by seven months last year’s massive, multi-part “Get Back” film documentary about The Beatles, which was directed by Oscar winner Peter Jackson.

The Beatles perform in public for the last time

The Beatles meet ‘The Lord of the Rings’ in ‘Get Back’: ‘It’ll blow your mind,’ says director Peter Jackson

The six-hour-plus documentary will be exclusively shown by Disney+ over three nights on Thanksgiving weekend. It paints a markedly different picture of The Beatles than the 1970 documentary, “Let It Be.”

Nov. 21, 2021

Tickets for all “Got Back” tour dates will be on sale to the public beginning next Friday, Feb. 25, at 10 a.m. local time A pre-sale for American Express Card Members will run from 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, to 10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, local time. Prices have not yet been announced.

A pre-sale for McCartney fan club members also begins Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 10 a.m. local time. People can join the fan club online at paulmccartney.gotback.com .

McCartney’s fellow former Beatle, Ringo Starr, will also be back on the road this year. His tour opens May 27 in Canada and concludes June 26 in Florida.

It does not, at least for now, include any West Coast dates. Starr has been a regular performer at San Diego’s Humphreys Concerts by the Bay in previous decades.

Sir Paul McCartney MBE is an English musician, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and composer and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century.

He was part of perhaps the most famous British band of the 20th century, The Beatles who are regarded as one of the most popular and influential acts in the history of rock music and his songwriting partnership with John Lennon is one of the greatest of all time. McCartney has been recognised as one of the most successful performers of all time collating 60 gold discs and sales of over 100 million albums and 100 million singles of his work with the Beatles and as a solo artist.

In 1999 he received the honour of being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist due to the fact that he has written, or co-written 32 songs that have reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and as of 2014 he has sold more than 15.5 million RIAA-certified units in the United States. McCartney, Lennon, Harrison and Starr received MBEs in 1965, and in 1997, McCartney was knighted for his services to music. He performed at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games and is seen as ambassador of British music.

McCartney first met Lennon at a church fete in 1967 where he was performing with his current band The Quarrymen, little did they know they would form such a close working relationship and would eventually become the most successful recording band in history. Cited as the driving force behind the first ever rock concept album, 'St. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club', McCartney kept creativity at the forefront of everything he did.

He currently holds an honorary doctorate degree from Yale Music, a Brit Award for an Outstanding Contribution to Music, twenty-one Grammy Awards and a knighthood. The tireless musician is still touring to this day and shows no sign of slowing.

Live reviews

The Paul McCartney concert on October 30, 2014 in Greensboro, NC was far and away the best concert I have been to and I have been to many. To see this music legend alone is amazing but to see him and his band, not missing a beat the entire evening, goes beyond amazing. McCartney's voice gave just a little a couple of times but his enery and showmanship was spot on, and and other than those one or two times, his voice was as rich as ever. Make no mistake, the tickets were expensive but you get every penny's worth of your money back in the show you get. He started late, about 45 minutes or so, but then played for almost 3 straight hours and did 2 extended encores. Just amazing. I saw BB King not too long ago and he played about the length of one of McCartney's encores and just droned on and on for the rest of the hour long show, telling stories that I guess he found entertaining but no one else did, as evidenced by a few boo's. Sad and a waste of good money. Don't get me wrong-I still love BB King but it was a sad waste of time and money that night. You will not have any waste seeing Paul McCartney. His renditions of the old Beatles songs were a delightful step back in time, his Wings songs as tight as ever and it all just got better and better. The lighting and background effects on a large wall of lights produced beautiful effects that went from psychadelic to photo's of children, the Beatels, buildings and more. Standing alone and playing an acoustic guitar on a large block that rose about 20 feet above the stage was fantastic, with a full moon, leafless tree and midnight blue sky behind him. And then a large blue rose forming on the front of the block just set the mood for his excellent guitarwork and vocals. When the show ends with Live and Let Die, they pyrotechnics were amazing. The roar of about 16,000 fans combined with fireworks and blasts of flames in perfect unison was the way to hit a finale. And the 2 encores were a perfect end to a perfect night. If you get a chance to see Paul McCarney, go-just go! Worth the money and then some!

PAUL MCCARTNEY is Out There playing for 3 hours. Yes, that is right! Pauly rocked the sold out show for 3 hours. This is the third time I have had the pleasure of seeing him and have seen many other bands but this was the best show I have ever seen. Not only did he rock out with fab Beatle songs like "Helter Skelter" but he also slowed it down with songs like "The Long And Winding Road". He treated us to some great Wings surprises like "Hi Hi Hi" and "Listen To What The Man Said". He also played some great songs from his latest album "New". I have his concert DVD's and he added many different songs to the mix while still keeping in some of the hoped for favorites.

I don't want to give anything away but there are some awesome surprises music wise awaiting the lucky person who will attend one of his shows.

This is a must see show, the material spanned his entire career. He sounded fantastic and he looks great! To all the ladies out there, you will still swoon when you see him! I did! He was funny and charming. One of the most refreshing things was that you could tell he was having an awesome time and you felt like he wanted to stay and play longer as much as you wanted him to stay and play longer! He really shows his fans that he cares about us as much as we care about him.

A very cool and unexpected event: He brought a couple up onstage who had a sign stating that he was ordained and would he marry them. He did a short little ceremony for them stating that it really wasn't legal but it was awesome! I totally wanted to grab the guy next to me (who I didn't know) and yell "We're next!"

I really think this is a show for anyone who really loves music. Paul was changing his guitar's and bass's out even playing one of his original guitars that he used for Sgt.Peppers. Throwing in an awesome tribute to Jimi Hendrix. Go see him if you get the chance. I would go again tonight if I could!

Beatles legend and Wings mainman, Paul McCartney will remain indelibly etched into the annals of time. The humanitarian, bassist and vocalist has traversed six decades, performing in some of the world's biggest and best venues, at historic moments (Band Aid), and unique moments (who ever pegged Macca as a Nirvana member?!), McCartney is a one-of-a-kind performer, fully deserving his place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The 72-year-old Liverpudlian is entirely at ease on stage – he's essentially lived there for the best portion of his life – his catalogue is studded with megaton hits. Bond theme “Live And Let Die” (replete with flamethrowers when performed at festivals), Stevie Wonder duet “Ebony and Ivory”, “Coming Up” and “Jet” are non-Beatles bangers, but he frequently performs legendary cuts like “Let It Be”, “Back In The USSR” and “Hey Jude” at the end of his sets. How thoroughly immense is it watching a genuine Beatle lead a rousing chorus of “Naa naa naa nanananaaaaa?" Though arguably not as elastic as he once was – don't expect too many backflips – he's still a consummate entertainer. His voice has aged, but he still smashes every note, and his fretwork's not diminished a smidgen. It's rare you get to see a legend in the flesh, but grab any chance to witness McCartney, and you'll not regret it.

Paul McCartney. Just let the legend of that name sink in.

I can honestly, without a doubt say that this was the best concert/show I have ever been to (and I have been to numerous concerts).

Not only did he perform his New songs, but he performed all of his hits from The Beatles to The Wings as well. And I am sure he barely hit the top of the iceberg with what he performed considering his incredible library of number 1s and hundreds upon hundreds of songs.

This 72 year old man performed a 3 hour nonstop performance in clouding pyrotechnics, memoriams to his late and great Beatle counterparts, and 3 encores without breaking a sweat.

He may not be able to hold his notes as long as he did when he was younger but he still sounded amazing nonetheless. I was blown away and so happy that I can tell my kids when I am older that I saw one of The Beatles and it was perfect.

I don't think I have ever recommended a concert as highly as I am for Sir Paul. He is a living legend and am honored to have seen him rocking, running all over the place and putting on a great performance at the age of 72.

YOU MUST GO SEE HIM LIVE. It's an experience well worth the money and his tickets start at 25 for far seats but even so, WORTH IT.

BEST CONCERT OF MY LIFE!! I can say Even one of the most incredible moments of my life. I know what it means being able to see the legend Sir Paul McCartney live and he fullfill all my expectations and way more! His band is absolutely amazing!

But let me tell you the highlight of my year:

I could only afford the cheapest level tickets but I was more than ok with that since i was going to see my idol, then on my way to our seats with my 2 girlfriends, an angel waiting at the top of the stairs ask us to see our tickets and then offer to change them, we were surprised and maybe thinking it was a scam but then she pulled her envelope with 3 FIRST ROW TICKETS!! Best seat in the arena, she identify herself as part of Sir Paul team, and after many thank yous and hugs we went to see the biggest concert.

Thats why he is the absolutely GREATEST rock star of this planet! Beacuse he truly cares about his audiences, i will never in my wildest dreams tought i was going to see able to be on the first row, besides the wonderful drama of the situation his performance was perfect, spotless, he is full of energy and will be forever grateful to him for such an amazing night.

Sir Paul McCartney concert in Munchen was fabulous (Fab four, Fab one :)). The Olympiastadion was full of happy delighted people who were lucky enough to get a ticket. There were Beatles fans along with Wings and Macca fans from many different countries, young and not so young people, all cheerfully singing the everlasting songs and dancing to our beloved music that defined the lives of many of us. The show went on for full 2 hours and 40 minutes, almost 40 songs from all periods, from late 50's to nowadays hits.

For me, it was a once in a lifetime event. I grew up with Beatles and Paul McCartney music, and I have been waiting for a long time for this. It's been a long time since I bought my first Beatles record, even long time since I bought my last one (not to mention I have all Beatles records plus many of their solo albums :)), and the possibility to see one of my heroes live in concert, it was just a dream come true.

It was worth every single penny spent on concert ticket, air ticket, airport transfers, accomodation for couple of days, and of course whole lotta german beer :)

Long live Sir Paul, long live Beatles, forever live their eternal music!

This is the second time I've seen Paul McCartney in the past few years, and yet again he did NOT disappoint. First of all, he played almost 3 hours both times, so you will get plenty of bang for your buck based on the duration of his show alone. Secondly, considering he is 72 years old, he still nails most of the hard notes and delivers a true, genuine performance while frequently interacting with the audience in between songs. Paul is a very personable character that makes the fans feel appreciated and loved as much as we love him. His show started with a few songs that would be recognizable to the casual fan, it delved off into some less "commonly" known songs and a couple cuts from his new album (which also sounded great), then he closed out the show with MANY huge hits and sing-alongs that definitely left the audience wanting more! The pyrotechnics that kicked in during Live and Let Die were unexpected and amazing! I think he also did three encores as well, and I would definitely return to watch any future shows he does in Kansas City!

aronktaylor’s profile image

I don't need to say how amazing this man is and how happy I am to have attended this show. On "Live and let die" there was even pyrotechnics and fireworks. Paul was telling us stories, singing and joking, I think he switched more than 5 guitars during the show and the evening was just overall beautiful.

The venue was terrible, though.. There was no warning about not bringing the bags and we had to pay 15 Euros to leave the bag before getting in - backpacks were not allowed at all (so they basically forced us to give this money as it was too late to go back to hotel and leave it there). Also the security check was useless.. We were drinking in line to warm up and forgot about empty bottle in the pocket.. Guess what? We were able to bring a GLASS BOTTLE through security check, cause we didn't remember and they never checked.. What if I was a psycho? It's glass after all.

As soon as the legend, Sir Paul McCartney himself took the stage, the magic began! He performed for three solid hours, entertaining the crowd with songs written with the Beatles, with Wings, and on his own. I got teary-eyed when he first came into view, as you don't expect to see a legend, at 72 years old, still performing at the top of his game! Paul McCartney still LOVES what he does! Financially, he doesn't need to perform. He does it because he loves to and because he still can, which is impressive! This concert shall be one of my favorites for a long time - and I've attend many concerts in my lifetime. He came out and did two encores, even running around the stage. He never sat down unless poised at the piano. A legend, a master, a must-see!

Paul McCartney Reveals He Sang 'Let It Be' for Jimmy Buffett in the 'Last Week of His Life'

"He still had that twinkle in his eye," The Beatles singer said of Buffett at Keep the Party Going: A Tribute to Jimmy Buffett at the Hollywood Bowl on April 11

Paul McCartney is sharing a touching insight into the final weeks of his friend Jimmy Buffett ’s life.

Speaking at a tribute concert to honor the late folk rock artist, who died at age 76 last September, at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on April 11, McCartney, 81, recalled how he was invited to sing for Buffett at his home by his wife Jane Slagsvol .

“Just in the last week of his life, I was invited up to his house by Janie,” McCartney said on stage at Keep the Party Going: A Tribute to Jimmy Buffett ahead of his performance. “And I was invited up there to sing a couple of songs for Jimmy, and he was in a pretty bad way, but he still had that twinkle in his eye. So I thought I'll sing one of those songs that I sang to him tonight.”

McCartney then took to the piano to perform “Let It Be” with little accompaniment for the iconic musician.

The Beatles bassist/singer also shared a sweet anecdote about Buffett, whom he called “one great man," and a vacation the two took together.

Tim Mosenfelder/WireImage

“He was generous. He was funny. He'd done just about everything in his life,” said McCartney. “And I say he was so generous. I was on holiday with him and I forgot to bring my guitar. So he had his own guitar strung left-handed for me … And then the next time I saw him, he'd had one custom made left-handed for me. So I love Jimmy.”

Along with McCartney, others honoring Buffett and celebrating his life and musical legacy at the one-night only show included the Eagles, Jon Bon Jovi , Sheryl Crow and Snoop Dogg .

Crow, 62, recalled how she was hired by Buffett as a backup singer before she got famous — and she made quite the arrival for their first performance together.

“I was hired by Jimmy Buffett …I was absolutely a nobody. And I got to sing backup on 'Off to See the Lizard' with Timothy B. Schmidt,” explained Crow. “But I have to preface the story by saying I came from St. Louis. I flew to Miami. I got on a small commuter jet. We had a bomb scare. They flew us in a hundred yards above the water. They foam landed us, and then the FBI showed up. And then forevermore, Jimmy would say, ‘This girl knows how to show up to a party.’ "

She concluded, "I will tell you, he is for me the most beautiful illustration of what it means to be alive and awake and absolutely present in every moment.”

Meanwhile, Dolly Parton appeared at the tribute concert in a pre-taped message as she shared her own words of kindness for the “Margaritaville” singer.

“Jimmy Buffet was a dear, dear friend of mine,” began Parton, 78. “I know he is looking down thinking, ‘What are you people doing? Did y'all have a margarita?’ And I'm sure we did. Most of us right? Anyway, I just wanted to say that I love Jimmy like all of you do. What a great human being he was. What a great talent he was. What a sweet, sweet soul.”

The late singer’s longtime touring band The Coral Reefer Band also played at the event and were introduced to the stage one by one by McCartney after his own performance.

Following Buffett’s death, McCartney — who played bass on “My Gummie Just Kicked In” on Buffett's final album, Equal Strain on All Parts — paid tribute to the Grammy-nominated star on social media.

“It seems that so many wonderful people are leaving this world, and now Jimmy Buffett is one of them. I’ve known Jimmy for some time and found him to be one of the kindest and most generous people,” wrote McCartney on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“He had a most amazing lust for life and a beautiful sense of humour. When we swapped tales about the past his were so exotic and lush and involved sailing trips and surfing and so many exciting stories that it was hard for me to keep up with him,” he continued, adding, “So many of us will miss Jimmy and his tremendous personality. His love for us all, and for mankind as a whole.”

McCartney concluded his post, which featured a photo of the duo laughing and holding hands, “So long, Jim. You are a very special man and friend and it was a great privilege to get to know you and love you. Bubbles up, my friend. Love, Paul.”

Buffett died from Merkel cell carcinoma a rare and aggressive skin cancer, just over eight months ago.

His death was announced in a statement posted on his social media and website .

“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs," the statement — which was accompanied by a touching photograph of Buffett sitting on a boat — read. "He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many."

Paul McCartney and The Eagles play The Beatles’ ‘Let It Be’ at Jimmy Buffett tribute show

The tropical rock singer-songwriter died in September at the age of 76

Paul McCartney performs on The Pyramid Stage during day four of Glastonbury Festival at Worthy Farm, Pilton on June 25, 2022 in Glastonbury, England.

Paul McCartney was joined by The Eagles on a version of ‘Let It Be’ at a tribute concert for the late Jimmy Buffett at the Hollywood Bowl this week.

The singer-songwriter, known for his tropical rock sound, died at the age of 76 last September after a four-year battle with skin cancer .

The concert, titled ‘Keep the Party Going: A Tribute to Jimmy Buffett’ took place at the Los Angeles venue on Thursday (April 11), including appearances from Sheryl Crow , Brandi Carlile , Zac Brown , Jon Bon Jovi and Buffett’s band The Coral Reefer Band.

Dave Grohl introduced McCartney to the stage, and the Beatle spoke about his relationship with Buffett. “I had the great pleasure of knowing Jimmy, and like everyone else on the bill tonight has said, this is one great man,” he said.

“He was generous, he was funny, he’d done just about everything in his life. I was on holiday with him and I forgot to bring my guitar, so he had his own guitar strung left-handed for me. And then the next time I saw him he’d had one custom made left-handed for me.”

McCartney then took to a grand piano and performed ‘Let It Be’, backed by The Eagles. Watch the footage below, including Grohl’s introduction and McCartney’s speech to the crowd:

A posthumous album, ‘Equal Strain On All Parts’, that Buffett had been working on before his death was released in November , and featured the McCartney collaboration ‘My Gummie Just Kicked In’.

In  a social media tribute to Buffett  following his death, McCartney announced his involvement in the album, writing: “I was very happy to have played on one of his latest songs called ‘My Gummie Just Kicked In’. We had a real fun session and he played me some of his new songs.

“One [new track], in particular, I loved was the song ‘Bubbles Up’. And I told him that not only was the song great but the vocal was probably the best I’ve heard him sing ever. He turned a diving phrase that is used to train people underwater into a metaphor for life when you’re confused and don’t know where you are just follow the bubbles – they’ll take you up to the surface and straighten you out right away.”

In other McCartney news, he recently shared an embarrassing story from one of The Beatles’ earliest live performances .

“We had this gig and it was the first thing I ever played, and I was lead guitar player,” he explained. “John [Lennon] was rhythm. I had a solo and I totally froze. Could not move my fingers.”

“It was just so embarrassing. My lead guitar playing career melted at that moment and I said, ‘Well, I’m not doing this again. I’m not cut out for this. I’m no good.’”

Last week,  Macca commented on Beyoncé’s cover of his song ‘Blackbird’ , commending her for using it to “ease racial tension”.

Queen Bey included her version of the track on her new record ‘ Cowboy Carter ’, which was released on March 29. The song was originally released on The Beatles’ self-titled 1968 album, commonly referred to as ‘The White Album’.

“I am so happy with @beyonce’s version of my song ‘Blackbird’,” he wrote on social media. “I think she does a magnificent version of it and it reinforces the civil rights message that inspired me to write the song in the first place.”

It was also confirmed that Beyoncé used The Beatles’ original ‘Blackbird’ backing track  in her cover of the song.

Last month, an artwork that was banned for being “too unflattering” in its depiction of him is heading to auction .

Watch Paul McCartney Team Up with the Eagles to Perform “Let It Be” During Jimmy Buffett Tribute Concert

L ast night (April 11) some of the biggest stars across multiple genres gathered to pay tribute to the late Jimmy Buffett. Keep the Party Going: A Tribute to Jimmy Buffett took place at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The star-studded show included Brandi Carlile, Kenny Chesney, Paul McCartney, Zac Brown, Eagles, Pitbull, and many more. During the show, McCartney and Eagles teamed up for a stunning rendition of “Let It Be.”

The Beatles originally released the McCartney-penned “Let It Be” in March of 1970. Two months later, it became the title track of the band’s post-breakup album. It became a No. 1 hit.

Paul McCartney Remembers Jimmy Buffett

Before performing the song, McCartney took a moment to talk about his history with Buffett. “I had the great pleasure of knowing Jimmy. And, like everyone else on the bill has said, this was one great man,” he said of the late singer/songwriter. “He was generous, he was funny, he’d done just about everything in his life.”

Then, McCartney shared a story about Buffett’s generosity. “I was out in Hollywood with him and I forgot to bring my guitar. So, he had his own guitar strung left-handed for me. And the next time I saw him, he had one custom-made left-handed for me,” he recalled. “So, I loved Jimmy.”

McCartney went on to say that he spent time with Buffett not long before he died. “In the last week of his life, I was invited up to his house by Janey,” he recalled. Then, he informed the crowd that the concert wouldn’t have happened without Buffett’s wife’s involvement. So, he called for a round of applause for her before continuing his story. “I was invited up there to sing a couple of songs for Jimmy. He was in a really bad way but he still had that twinkle in his eye. So, I thought I would sing one of those songs that I sang to him tonight,” he concluded before sitting down at a piano.

McCartney and Eagles Perform “Let It Be” for Jimmy Buffett

The Eagles are one of the biggest bands in classic rock. So, it takes some major star power to overshadow them on the stage. Paul McCartney is one of the few musicians who has that much star power and then some. For a few minutes, they were the former Beatle’s backing band.

Paul McCartney

It might be time to refer to the Beatles as the Bey-tles from here on out! On Thursday (April 4), Sir Paul McCartney took to his Instagram page to share a lengthy message lauding Beyoncé ‘s cover of The Fab Four’s “Blackbird,” which appears on her brand new Cowboy Carter album.

Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’: All 27 Tracks Ranked

Trending on billboard.

McCartney spoke about the civil rights bent he alluded in  Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now , a 1997 Barry Miles-penned biography of the Beatles. In the book, McCartney explains that “I had in mind a [Black] woman, rather than a bird. Those were the days of the civil rights movement, which all of us cared passionately about, so this was really a song from me to a [Black] woman, experiencing these problems in the States: ‘Let me encourage you to keep trying, to keep your faith; there is hope.'”

McCartney — whose original master recording is used in Beyoncé’s version, according to Variety — also revealed that he had the chance to speak with the pop icon about her take on “Blackbird.”

“Blackbiird,” the second track on Bey’s already-record-breaking Cowboy Carter , is one of two covers on the LP. Elsewhere on the sprawling 27-tack album, Beyoncé takes on Dolly Parton’s seminal “Jolene,” rewriting the song to be a more seamless fit for a “Creole banjee b–ch from Lousianne.”

In 2022, with Renaissance lead single “Break My Soul” entering the Billboard Hot 100 ‘s top 10 for the first time, Beyoncé became the first woman in Billboard history to ever tally at least 20 top 10 hits as soloist and 10 or more top 10s as a member of a group. The only other two artists to accomplish such a feat? None other than Michael Jackson and McCartney.

The Beatles’ original version of “Blackbird” appeared on their eponymous 1968 LP — commonly referred to as The White Album — which spent nine weeks atop the Billboard 200 . Recently, Emmy-winning documentarian Ken Burns compared Cowboy Carter to The White Album , citing both records’ extensive exploration of different musical genres.

Check out Sir Paul’s sweet Instagram message about Beyoncé’s “Blackbiird” below.
