Taylor Swift Just Debuted New 1989 Outfits—See the Pics

Taylor Swift wears new 1989 outfit with green and pink

It's a new era. The European leg of the much-lauded Eras Tour officially kicked off in Paris tonight, and Taylor Swift had plenty of newness up her sleeve. For starters, she added a section for her newest album, The Tortured Poets Department , during which she debuted a new all-white outfit. She began that part of the performance wearing a marching band coat complete with epaulets. She then shed that layer and revealed a white dress custom-made by Vivienne Westwood emblazoned with the lyrics, "I love you, it's ruining my life." The dress is made of recycled taffeta, and she completed the look with custom Christian Louboutin lace-up ankle boots.

During the Paris show, Swift also debuted a new fringe dress and black boots for the Fearless era, new tops and skirts for 1989 , and a new Midnights bodysuit by Zuhair Murad Couture. Phew! How does she continue to top herself every single concert? Scroll down to see the photos.

Taylor Swift's New 1989 Outfits

So far, Taylor Swift has debuted four new color combinations for her 1989 era, all designed by Roberto Cavalli with Christian Louboutin boots. On May 17, Swift revealed her latest look in Stockholm, Sweden. The yellow and blue represent the colors of Sweden's flag.

Erin got her start as a Who What Wear intern over 13 years ago—back when the site only published a single story per day. (Who What Wear has since increased that number twentyfold.) She graduated magna cum laude from USC, which is how she ended up moving to Los Angeles from her hometown of San Diego. In college, she also interned at Refinery29 , where she was promoted to editorial assistant and then assistant editor. After nearly three years at R29, she came back to WWW in 2016, where she currently holds the title of Associate Director of Fashion News (as well as the unofficial title of resident royal expert—in case you haven't noticed her numerous Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton stories). She spends her days trying to incorporate her idols, Anna Wintour and Roger Federer, into as many stories as possible. Outside of work, she loves tennis, classic rock, traveling, and smothering her dog with affection.

The Monkees’ first visit to Europe since 1967 brought a sell-out crowd to nearly every venue and the media extensively covered their return.  Most of the tour centered in the United Kingdom.  The Monkees were in such high demand that extra dates had to be added to the original schedule.  A performance in Holland on April 21, 1989 was broadcasted on European radio.  British band Seven opened up for the Monkees at most dates.  The tour kicked off with a press conference at London’s Hard Rock Cafe in early March.

The band undertook an exhaustive media campaign prior to the tour.  Amongst other things, UK record label K-Tel released the album “Hey Hey It’s The Monkees Greatest Hits” which jumped to #12 on the British charts and sold over 100,000 copies, spurred by a massive TV and radio campaign.  The album went gold, and the Monkees were presented with a gold record at the final show in Reading, England on April 24, 1989.

These critically acclaimed concerts included several of the skits performed during the 1987 North American tour.  A very well received acoustic set was added to the show, featuring Peter on the acoustic guitar.  Micky played the drums often, Peter switched back and forth between electric and lead guitar, keyboards and banjo, and Davy played the tambourine and maracas.  Yet another new band (with the horn section returning) was chosen to back the three Monkees on this tour.  The backing band consisted of Doug Trevor (rhythm guitar), Glyn Evans (bass), Frankie Hepburn (guitar), Martin Wilde (drums), Mark Hayley (keyboards), Lawrie Hayley (backing vocals), Mike Smith (saxophone), Noel Langley (trumpet) and Andy Bush (trumpet).

The Nesmith tribute songs in the acoustic set (“Good Clean Fun,” “Papa Gene’s Blues” and “What Am I Doing Hangin’ ‘Round?”) were played at selected concerts only.  “MGBGT” and “Every Step Of The Way” were added to or deleted from the set on any given night as well.

Taylor Swift’s Orange Eras Tour Look Fueled New Album Theories

Karma is real — maybe.

TOPSHOT - American singer and songwriter Taylor Swift performs on stage as part of her Eras Tour in ...

Taylor Swift always has a trick up her sleeve — or nay, wardrobe . During the European leg of her Eras Tour, the singer continues to mix up the colors of her Roberto Cavalli crop top and short skirt sets for the 1989 act. She even mismatched her custom Christian Louboutin ankle boots à la Carrie Bradshaw .

However, while performing in Lyon, France, on June 2, Swift deviated from her recent pattern by sporting a (gasp!) matching set for the 1989 era. Naturally, some fans think this could be yet another clue pointing to her next album, despite the fact that her newest album, The Tortured Poets Department , is only a month old.

Taylor’s New Monochrome Look

While performing in Lyon, Swift wore her first coordinated 1989 ensemble of the European leg, donning a glittering orange crop top and an ombré orange short skirt. The monochrome vibe continued down to her footwear, with Swift choosing orange Louboutin ankle boots rather than mixing up the colors.

Taylor Swift's orange 1989 era look in Lyon, France.

Swift has worn both orange pieces before as part of mismatched looks. She paired the ombré skirt with a yellow crop top on May 12 in Paris to represent boyfriend Travis Kelce’s Chiefs colors , since he was in the audience that night. Then she reversed the colors at her May 29 show in Madrid, Spain, to honor the country’s flag.

Taylor Swift's yellow and orange 1989 look in Madrid.

However, the all-orange look could strengthen a rapidly growing Swiftie theory.

The Orange Theory

Swifties have long speculated that orange would be the color of Swift’s next album, since she has subtly incorporated orange into the Eras Tour since opening night in March 2023, and the color has not represented any of Swift’s eras before. This turned out to be false for Tortured Poets (its color is predominately white ).

However, when the tour resumed in Europe on May 9, Swift doubled down, debuting a new orange-tinged leotard and blazer for the Lover era and incorporating orange into the 1989 looks.

Taylor Swift performs onstage during The Eras Tour on May 12, 2024 in Paris, France.

Swift’s new orange looks are causing fans to speculate (again) that the color will indeed represent her next album , with some fans linking it back to the popular Karma theory . Besides being a Midnights track, Karma is also long suspected to be the name of Swift’s “lost album” that fans think she started recording before she pivoted into what became her 2017 album Reputation.

“Karma” was written in orange graffiti in her music video for “The Man,” which fans have used as proof that she will release her “lost album” at some point, perhaps alongside Reputation (Taylor’s Version) . But whether Swift’s use of orange is an Easter egg for Karma, an entirely different album, or nothing at all, she’s likely already planting clues for her next project.
