Huthridurga Fort & temple from the trek starting point

The Comprehensive Uttari Betta/ Huthridurga Hiking Guide

Located in the Tumkur district of Karnataka, Huthridurga, Huthri Betta or Uttari Betta is a fortified hill built by king Kempegowda in the 18th century. The seven-fort gateway structure, built on rocks that are found along the hike, is unique and picturesque. This hill also served as a military base during Tipu Sultan’s time.

While approaching the village during the ride, one can spot the Huthridurga hilltop with the white temple, standing alone & tall. The Uttari Betta is one of the best sunrise day hikes from Bangalore. To add on, it is one of the Navadurga, 9 hill forts of Bangalore .

Read on to learn more about all the essentials to ensure you successfully undertake and complete this trek.

Uttari Betta/ Huthridurga Hiking Guide

Table of contents, network availability, atm availability, languages spoken, parking availability, restroom facilities, best time to visit, how to reach huthridurga from bangalore, where to eat, things to do in huthridurga, hiking details, important points to remember, essential things to carry.

Good cellular reception of Airtel, Jio, and BSNL can be found throughout the trail.

There is no ATM available in the village. So, ensure you carry sufficient cash.

The regional language, Kannada, is the only language spoken by the people in the region.

Ample & safe parking space is available at the base of the trek.

Be warned, that there are no restroom facilities available. You are entirely gonna have to attend to all of nature’s calls with nature.

Best time to visit Huthridurga or Uttaribetta

You can do the Uttari Betta hike all year round. The best time to visit is during the sunrise, early in the morning. During summer, however, we advise you to start the trek early as it becomes increasingly hot and humid as the day goes by.

The place is not connected to the railway station. There are no frequent buses available to reach Huthridurga. The ideal way to reach Huthridurga is by road using personal transport. There are two routes, via Yeshwantpur where the roads are good, and via the Tumkur highways where you have to pay for the toll (including two-wheelers). The road after the highways is not as good as compared to the Yeshwantpur route.

Search for the Huthridurga trek starting point . This will lead you straight to the parking lot, the starting point of the hike.

Only one snack shop can be found at the base of the hike. Restaurants can be found before entering the Huthridurga Hill near the arch entrance. Bring food or snacks, especially if you are planning for the sunrise hike as no shops will be open at that hour.

The trek starts from the temple situated in the village. There are steps carved on stones with side steel rails for support making it easier for anyone to do this hike. There are also white direction arrows wherever needed.

Huthridurga fort ruins with seven fort entrances can be found along the route.

At The Huthridurga Summit:

Sankareshwara temple at the hilltop

You can find the Shiva temple known as Shankareshwara temple and a Nandi idol just before the last leg of the stairs. Pooja to the deity is done on Mondays and Fridays. There is a deep spring called “Dotta done” which never dries up.

view from the Huthridurga hills

We get an extensive view of the surrounding settlements dotted by a large number of hills and a lake. A viewpoint on the right (while facing the temple) and Huthridurga fort ruins can also be found. The view is picturesque, to say the least. It is certainly unique and spectacular to be called a ‘million-dollar’ view.

Once you have reached a spot where you are able to see this view, look right off the boulder and proceed towards the route that is visible which will lead you to a path underground as shown in the picture below.

Uttari Betta cave path

Walking for a few more meters, you will reach the peak. The two stone boulders mark the end of the hiking trail of Uttari Betta. From here, you can see the popular hills of Shivgange and Savanadurga on a clear day.

Uttari Betta peak - end

  • The use of plastics and smoking is strictly prohibited.
  • As a hiker, it is incumbent on you to be responsible and not litter. Ideally, you are supposed to leave better than it was before. But, you can settle for leaving the trail just as you found it.
  • No trek guide is required for the Huthridurga hike. You can do this trek by yourselves as the stairs and arrow marks guide you straight to the top. The chances of getting lost are little to none.
  • Beware of monkeys. They are notorious for stealing food from travelers.

trail marking along the Uttari betta trek

  • Ensure you carry at least 1L of water per person.
  • Take sufficient snacks and energy bars. There is only one shop at the base which is open only during the daytime.
  • Cap, sunscreen & sunglasses are essential to ward off the summer heat.
  • Carry a poncho or raincoat in case of rain.
  • Above all, ensure you wear comfortable shoes.

The Uttari Betta trail is a great trek for amateurs, and the viewpoints alone are worth the endeavor. Uttari Betta trek

After a lot of planning, cancelling and re-planning, I finally did the Uttari betta trek over a weekend. Uttari betta is an easily accessible hill and hence can be done as a one day trip from Bangalore city. It is now one of the popular trekking destinations around Bangalore city.

Did you know that Bangalore is surrounded by many hills (betta in Kannada language) and they all make up as perfect one day treks? To name a few are Nandi Hill , Skandagiri, Shivgange betta , Bilikal Rangaswamy betta , Channarayana Durga Fort , Bheema Bakasura betta , Hulukadi betta and Kaurava Kunda .

About Uttari betta

Also known as Hutridurga, Uttari betta is a fortified hill in Kunigal taluk of Karnataka state. At an elevation of 1130 metres, Uttari betta is famous among trekkers and over the weekends, it is very crowded.

In India, a hike is also called as a trek. And hence, I am referring to the Uttari betta hike as trek so to use the local language. It is just one day and it is a hike technically.

Hutridurga was built by Kempegowda in the 16th century. There is a ruined fort at the peak of Uttari betta. The Uttari betta fort or the Hurtidurga fort was was the military bastion of Tipu Sultan which was conquered by the British in 1791. It has a small temple, Shankareshwara temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva.

There is also a Nandi statue with another temple dedicated to Lord Anjaneya. The hill fort has eight main gateways from the base to the summit along with several other outer gates.

The best time to hike the Uttari betta is during the winter season. It is extremely hot during the summer season and it is best to avoid during the heat. Also, it is slippery when it is raining so be careful which the ascend and descend. When I was at the peak, there was a huge cloud burst and it poured for sometime. Unfortunately, there is no shelter on the peak.

Uttari betta trek

The Uttari betta trek is one of those hills that provide green shade while trekking. The hills around Bangalore are usually barren and dry but Uttari betta trek is different as it provides that green patch.

  • Starting and finishing point : Base of the hill at Santhepete (or Huthridurga).
  • Total distance : 5 kilometres return.
  • Time taken : 2 hours.
  • Grade : Easy. There are well built steps and railings to climb.
  • Type of trek : Return.

Important Information

  • Carry a strong day pack. The day pack must contain a first aid kit , sunscreen, poncho, sweater or a jacket, torch, personal medication and sun glasses.
  • Wear sturdy and comfortable shoes.
  • Always carry an extra pair of socks so you are prepared for blisters.
  • Take sufficient drinking water. At least take 2 litres of water for the day.
  • Carry your lunch and snacks with you to have it at the peak.
  • Do not throw garbage. Take your rubbish with you and dispose them only at dedicated bins.
  • There are no shops on the hill. Buy your lunch and snacks at the fast food joint or darshini that you visit along the way.
  • Even though this trek can be done by yourself, it is still best to go with a trekking agency so the entire day is planned along with the transportation.
  • There are no toilet facilities on the hill or at the peak.
  • Be careful of the monkeys as they usually grab your bags or food.

How to get to the starting point?

The starting point of the trek is in Santhepete (also called Huthridurga) in Kunigal taluk of Tumkur district.

Santhepete is around 80 kilometres from Bangalore city and it takes about 2 to 3 hours to reach by road. The route is towards Nelmangala and has toll roads.

Public transportation

There are frequent buses between Bangalore city and Kunigal. The best way would be to take a local bus to Kunigal and then taking an auto rickshaw or a taxi to Hutridurga.

Note: This mode could cause a problem as you may not get auto rickshaws or taxis while coming back after the trek.

One day itinerary

Uttari betta trek is a one day trip from Bangalore. Start early morning for Uttari betta. The road journey takes around 2 to 3 hours. On the way, ensure to have your breakfast. There are many fast food joints or darshinis. Pack your lunch too.

After reaching the base of the hill, start your trek. The trek takes only about one hour. At the peak, enjoy the spectacular views of the other mountains and villages. Have your lunch at the peak.

Start your descend and reach the base of the hill. The descend takes less than one hour. Once descended, start for Bangalore. The road journey again takes about 2 hours if there is no traffic.

Trekking agency

Bangalore has many trekking agencies that organise guided treks to near by hills around Bangalore. I have heard most of them are good even though I have not tried too many of them. One trekking agency that I have tried is the Bangalore Mountaineering Club (BMC). They are the oldest trekking agency in Bangalore and are very well established. I have been to many trekking agencies with them and have always had a good time. The trek leads are young and have good leadership skills and the treks are on time.

  • Trekking agency : BMC .
  • Cost : INR 1259 per person including the GST.
  • Booking : The booking process is easy and can be done on their website.
  • After booking, make sure to call them to confirm the trek. All these treks require minimum number of participants and if the agency does not get the participants, then they usually cancel the treks.

Safety for solo female travelers

I would not recommend hiking alone, be it male or female. The hill does get isolated very quickly and it is always best to go with at least one more person. As a general rule, trekking or hiking is advised to be done with a trekking buddy so you are prepared for any unforeseen situations.

Closing Notes

Uttari betta is surely one of the most amazing one day treks around Bangalore. The views from the peak are picturesque and stunning. Have you been to Uttari betta trek? Did you like it? Let me know in the comments below.

Uttari Betta Trek: A Night Trek With Eyes Wide Open

uttari betta trek entry fee

The nervousness of a new beginning, a pitch dark trail surrounded by bushes reaching the waist height, slippery slopes and a wholesome bunch of people. “You’ll never know if you never go” . The night trek to Uttari Betta also known as Hutridurga from Bengaluru was one such moment for me. True to that quote, I never knew night treks could be so much fun and scary at the same time.

If not for this trek, I would’ve never known about it. Similarly, I wouldn’t have known that I enjoy trek leading as much as trekking and I liked staying up all night if I was doing something exciting. Such was that night. The night of so many firsts and expectedly so much fun. And it all started with me saying yes to something new, yet another time, for leading a group to the peak of Uttari Betta from Bengaluru at NIGHT .

This journey was nothing short of an exciting one where I learned to overcome my own fears and lead others to a destination. A true journey from darkness to the light, ironically on a night trek ;).

Table of Contents

Come Aboard! We’re Off to Uttari Betta

Like all the other treks with Plantheunplanned , we boarded the bus at HSR. Briefly stopped at Domlur to pick up a few more people and a final stop at Mekhri Circle to pick the rest of them. That afternoon, I was reading up something about interpersonal interactions. I learned that we often use our jobs as a shield to say what we really want or do. And if my previous treks are proof, more often people eventually open up that what they are doing isn’t what they intend to do.

So I thought, why not ask people to introduce themselves without mentioning their jobs. So I did, and boy, that really got people thinking on their toes and then they opened up with amazing introductions. It was truly inspiring to see what all people around us do to keep themselves busy. Adding to that, almost the entire group were first-time trekkers. Well, it was my first too, but as a trek lead. Would be fun to see how this goes, I said to myself.

While the introductions kept us busy, the driver didn’t give a damn about them. He continued his assault on the accelerator pedal. As a result, the distance between Uttari Betta and Bengaluru trembled with fear and reduced to a furlong. We drove through the dim-lit roads beyond Magadi and reached the basecamp at 1:40 AM. I got up from my seat and looked at the gang.

Should We Stay or Should We Go

Surprisingly, everyone was still wide awake. On a normal day(night), I would be in a deep sleep by that time, but not today. Today of all the days, I had to be wide awake. So, though the initial plan was to sleep at the base camp and start the trek at around 4 AM. But everyone was so excited that they couldn’t sleep. Also, waking up someone that early in the morning can be quite a challenge (even more for a newbie trek lead like yours truly).

So, I asked around if they wanted to start the trek right away. Everyone agreed in unison. So we quickly got down the bus and gathered in a circle for some “ahem-ahem” instructions. I said it’s going to be dark (as if people didn’t see) and dangerous(duh!). Then I uttered, perhaps the only sensible words, let’s not race to the top, but go together as a team(this is one line that I continued to use in all the treks I lead thereafter).

And that pep talk ended and we started walking. The trail starts through a village and there was a left turn at the place where the streetlight ended. We have to walk on a path where even street light doesn’t feel like going, I murmered. But lucklily most of us had torches. So we started walking on that road without giving a damn about what occupied the space beyond the area lit by the torch.

The Royal Entrance of Uttari Betta

A few minutes of a walk later, there was another junction. A T-junction in the middle of nowhere surrounded by pitch darkness. We took a right turn and spotted a huge boulder. Someone ahead flashed the light over the boulder and it fell on an entrance. All those horror movies where the hero flashes the torch on a door and something crawls out of it, flashed in front of my eyes.

uttari betta trek entry fee

But I didn’t tell anyone about it. That’s the way, I shouted, pointing to the shining entrance. We gathered at the entrance for a quick recount and it was time for us to make a move. More specifically, for me to make a move inside the entrance. I clenched the torch in my fist and took baby steps towards the entrance. The group followed me. One step at a time I told myself before running straight out of the door on the other side. The group followed me.

Once inside the entrance, another steep rock welcomed us. But it bounced off the moonlight very well, so we didn’t have any trouble scaling it. Cold breeze swept off our faces on the rock. I turned to see if everyone was climbing fine. But something else distracted me altogether.

The scattered Pearls Of Uttari Betta

On a pitch black canvas in the distance, there were glimmering golden dots. Scattered, almost as if a pearl necklace fell down somewhere there. We sat here for sometime to let the view sink in and continued the hike. and reached the fort wall. Well, I wouldn’t say that kings had to jump walls to reach their own fortress but we had to.

uttari betta trek entry fee

The actual trail was through another dark stretch and seemed a bit longer than the one we just crossed. So, we didn’t dare to walk on the ground instead signed up to climb a fort wall in the middle of the night. Talk about an adventure.

uttari betta trek entry fee

So, I stepped on the first stable rock and extended my hand to find another. Placed my other leg on another stable rock and slowly worked my way to the top. Once on the top of the wall, there was another steep slope surrounded by trees and bushes. Unlike the previous trail, this one wasn’t directly exposed. So it was dark and also cold. And you know who likes dark and cold places? I’ll leave that up to your imagination.

I never found my senses function so active. I could hear the weakest of the chirps and the tiniest rustle of the leaves which was a blessing in disguise as I was more alive on the trek. We walked through that scary stretch and reached a stone carved stairway. The rock was too steep, so the stairway was carved out in a semi-circular fashion and we followed it.

uttari betta trek entry fee

Have You Ever Seen The Caves? At Night?

We continued walking through the bushy trail for a while, hopping over small rocks and climbing down the larger ones. After a while, the trail tapered into a cave. It was too small for most of us to walk upright.

So we bent down, holding the torch in weird positions and walked through that pitch darkness through stairs sandwiched between two huge boulders.

But we were more than ready for the challenge.

uttari betta trek entry fee

After a 20 min walk through a muddy path filled with weeds and trees, we reached the peak. And I was shocked to see most of the plain ground was already occupied. I didn’t know Uttari Betta attracted so much crowd.

Luckily, we found a nice spot for ourselves and settled down. Few games followed but my mind kept going back to the photography experiments I did earlier that week. I played with the exposure settings and tried to capture light trails and occasionally even write my name.

I thought, why not continue those experiments here. The light was perfect in the sense that it wasn’t there at all. So, it would be a perfect setting for a long exposure shot. I quickly pulled out my phone and showed the results of my experiment. I asked the gang if anyone wanted to volunteer. Many hands went up and I had a great time clicking these pictures.

uttari betta trek entry fee

The dark, cloudy and partly starry night tempted me to try few more low light shots. Then I clicked more and more and more.

uttari betta trek entry fee

Until the dawn arrived.

Foggy Sunrise At Uttari Betta

I think we all left whatever we were doing and sat down, eagerly waiting for the golden hour. The clock ticked past, 5:30 AM, the sun was nowhere to be seen. It went past 6 AM and still nothing. There was nothing but dense fog all around the Uttari Betta peak.

I was disappointed to miss the golden hour. So we thought we’ll spend more time at the Uttari Betta peak and explore it. We explored each and every corner of it and clicked pictures at every picture-worthy place. Boulders, slopes, trees, caves, we didn’t leave anything.

uttari betta trek entry fee

The fog cover slowly started to fade away and it took the disappointment with it. The clearing of the fog revealed the breathtaking landscapes.

uttari betta trek entry fee

Even the trail was clearly visible on the way back. I chuckled, looking at all that we walked through.

uttari betta trek entry fee

Imagine crossing this amidst pitch darkness and not slipping.

uttari betta trek entry fee

I didn’t realize there was a temple on the fort. On our way back, I saw a small trail diverging towards another huge rock. We had all the time at hand, so we climbed up.

uttari betta trek entry fee

We reached the temple and I was blown away. I walked to the corner of the rock and boy the landscapes around the Uttari Betta were breathtaking.

The landscape is so pretty that you can’t stop yourself clicking over 100 pictures or just sit and let it all sink in. The wind was very heavy, the kind that can take you away with it. With the wind, the fog was running at the speed of a cheetah and standing at the edge beside the temple, one can feel what a force it was.

uttari betta trek entry fee

After exploring the temple premises, we climbed all the way down. Boarded the TT had some delicious breakfast on the way back and reached Bengaluru. Must say, It was a fantastic trip. I figured that I had the capability to manage people and deal with all kinds of them.

That was something that I found incredibly useful in my professional life as well. I realized, that you don’t have to rely on professional work experience to develop skills that you need in a professional work environment. Something like Public Speaking can be developed if you’re speaking to a group of people regularly. Something like interpersonal relationships can be improved if you keep interacting with many people.

You will find solutions in the most unexpected areas, all you have to do is, figure out a means to get there. And for now, I found trek leading as a means to get to the goal of a better person and a better communicator.

That’s all for today.

Thanks for sparing your time reading it. Hope it was worth your time.

About Uttari Betta:

One of Bangalore's best hiking trail, the Uttari Betta is a 5 km trek across a spectacular lush green landscape that offers a quite unique scenic view similar to that of Western Ghats. The trek starts from a small village, entering the fort wall and passes through seven doors of stone to reach the halfway point of the hike which has a temple of Shankareswar at the top. The view from the temple top is beautiful enough to seize your mind for a moment.

Once we cross the temple, the trek continues ahead crossing a small jungle-cave, experiencing a whole new unexpected world and ends at the grassland top of the hill which is surrounded by huge boulders. After spending some time at the top with little chit-chat around the campfire, enjoy the sunset and after some time we begin to descend back towards the base point of the trek.

Bangalore is surrounded by many splendid hills and hillocks waiting to be explored. If you want to check them one by one, you must surely add this to your bucket list. Uttari Betta, the fortified hill known as Hutridurga in the southeast of Kunigal taluk, is the most popular trekking trail in Karnataka, and that is without reason because of the magnificent beauty it possesses. This popular trekking trail of Karnataka is a five-kilometre climb that treats adventurers with stunning views that imprints their minds for the rest of their lives.

This trek is a super master of scenic views and thrills you with the historic fort walls and intricate stone steps. An interesting fact is that this hill fort is said to have eight gateways from the foot to the summit in addition to the other several outer gates. What waits on the top? The trek summit delivers the temple of Shankareswar, where one gets an extensive view of the landscape dotted by many hills.

This sunrise trek with Plan The Unplanned takes you right into the middle of nature with the help of caves, jungles and huge boulders that will make you marvel at the immensity of life. It ensures that the trekkers feel at one with the abundant wildlife and vegetation its path offers. If you want to be one with nature, come with us, and be a part of something bigger.

The fun sessions involve getting to know the trek group, who will become your buddies throughout the trip. Of course, even after doing all that, we know how important sleep is for you to enjoy the trip, so consider that taken care of.

After walking for a reasonable amount of time in the dark through the village, you will come across a glorious fort that will immediately transport you to another world. Walkthrough the walls of this fort to come across the seven doors of stone. The trail meanders through boulders and steps carved into huge rocks. But worry not; our trek leaders will always be there to motivate you, making sure no one is left behind.

The end of the climb is when you pass these doors, you will come to the temple of Shankareswar. This temple is right at the top and is also the middle point of the trek. Make sure to take in the beautiful view at the top as it is a view that is unlike any other that you have seen.

After absorbing the beauty at the top of the hill, make your way towards the jungle cave that will have you captivated by its entire beauty. Just for a moment, you will forget what it is like to be a part of civilization as you will become a part of another world altogether.

The trail will end when you come across a huge grassland at the top of the hill, surrounded by huge boulders. We will observe the stunning sunrise at this location, with only green grass, clear blue skies, and dark grey boulders for our company. Make sure to remember this moment for as long as possible, as it will remind you of the absolute peace you felt at that moment.

Following the gorgeous sunrise, with a magical mix of colours in the sky, we let ourselves drown in its beauty. We will quickly begin our descent back to the base camp. Make sure to tread carefully while being enchanted by the beauty of the hills. We shall pause on the way to have a quick breakfast and then set out for Bangalore.

What’s life without adventure? Isn’t the real purpose of life to travel, to experience new places, and witness the sunrise from new mountaintops? This thought is what united Jatin and Tarun over a cup of chai, in spite of being from two unrelated backgrounds (CA and IT). They knew each other since the time Jatin was helping Tarun learn the ways of the wilderness through weekend treks and outings with another traveling group. Their love for traveling and trekking together motivated them to start something of their own. Thus was born “Plan The Unplanned”, where travel goals come true. Under the Companies Act, Plan The Unplanned is incorporated as Unplanned Journeys Private Limited They started their journey on unsteady ground, much like any other company, but they shared an infatuation for travel and adventure with their customers, which amplified their determination, and thus, Plan the Unplanned family keeps getting bigger every day! Just about any travel idea can come alive with Plan The Unplanned…treks, adventure activities like rock climbing, kayaking, rafting, backpacking trips across the country, cultural outings, photo walks; everything that fellow travelers need, to explore the great outdoors together. Well now that the wanderlust has kicked in and you can already see a vacation in your nearest future, here’s what we have to offer!
