JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - If you have plans to explore the Sunshine State this summer, you may want to stay clear of this Florida city, according to a new study.

Forbes Advisor recently shared its list of the worst nine cities for summer travel and Jacksonville took the top spot.

The ranking was based on an analysis of over 43 major cities that had available data across 16 key metrics including, hotel prices, air travel experience, tourist attractions, crime rates and more, Forbes said.

Jacksonville was found to be the worst vacation spot due to many factors, including a high crime rate, few restaurants with four or more stars on Tripadvisor, and a high percentage of disrupted summer flights at Jacksonville International Airport.

Tropical downpours deluge Florida. What to expect in Orlando area

ORLANDO, Fla. – We are tracking a surface tropical low over the Gulf of Mexico that is forecast to cross over the Sunshine State through Wednesday.

The low will emerge into the Atlantic Ocean by early Thursday morning.

The setup will bring repeated rounds of heavy rain into Central Florida through the day, with even more rainfall accumulating across the region.

Heavier showers and storms will be capable of dumping a quick 1-2 inches of rain per hour, leading to widespread rainfall totals of 1-3 inches and some locally higher amounts of 4-6 inches. This could lead to minor to moderate flooding for another day.

Rain-cooled air and abundant clouds will keep temperatures below average in the mid- to upper 80s.

As the low pulls away from the area by Thursday and Friday, lingering deep tropical moisture will continue to stream into the region, with rain coverage staying high at 70-80%.

By this weekend, we should finally start to see a change in the pattern with lower moisture levels just in time for Father’s Day on Sunday. Rain chances will decrease a bit to 40-50%, with highs creeping back to near 90 degrees.

The same tropical low (Invest 90-L) that is bringing drought-busting rain to the area, is also being closely monitored by the National Hurricane Center as some slow development is possible while the system moves offshore into Atlantic within the next day or so.

The NHC is giving this area a low chance for development in the next several days. (10% in 48 hours and 20% in seven days).

Everything was fine once we actually got on our flight. It was more then annoying they canceled (delayed) our flight. We lost out on a day of our trip along with money on our stay. Plus we had to book another hotel. So expensive.

Flight delayed 3 times. We were directed to go to a gate across from our gate. The plane wasn't there yet so we had to wait for it to arrive, then deplane everyone and then wait again for the plane to be cleaned. After 45 minuites we were allowed on the plane. The first plane had mechanical issues. The 2nd plane must have had bathroom issues because we did not have any food service whatsoever. No snack or beverage. That made for a long time not to have anything considering that we had just made it to the original gate and we had no time to stop to get food or a drink. Then we didn't want to leave the gate to get food because we wouldn't know how much longer the delay would be. Then the next gate change. Had we been told that the total time would have been aprox 45 min later we would have left to get food and a beverage. We had to wait again for the okay to the pilot to take off so we were on the runway for another 20 min. Overall, we were delayed over 2 hours which felt like 4 hours.

Items and exhibits found on-site include the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, NASA's former launch countdown clock, a garden with various rockets, astronaut training simulators and the space shuttle Atlantis. You can also take a tour of the property's facilities, watch space-themed IMAX movies or even have your photo taken with a real astronaut.

Space enthusiasts and families alike will enjoy exploring the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Most former visitors said the site offers tons to see and do, especially if you're looking to kill some time on a rainy day and many recommend spending the whole day there.

There are animal encounters and then there's Discovery Cove – a companion site to SeaWorld Orlando where you can get up-close with dolphins, stingrays, marmosets and otters. And since it's a reservation-only park (the park only admits up to 1,300 guests per day), you'll get to interact with the animals and trainers more intimately. Try snorkeling with tropical fish and rays in the park's coral reef or floating throughout the park's lush landscape on the Wind-Away River. If you need a break from the water, dry off on one of the beaches or feed some of the birds in Discovery Cove's Explorer's Aviary. All of these activities are included with your admission as is the use of snorkeling gear, wet suits and lockers. Unlimited food and drinks (including alcoholic libations) are included as well. Keep in mind that while meeting and swimming with dolphins is a main draw here, the experience isn't included in the base ticket.

The average Florida resident now lives about 590 miles from the nearest clinic that offers abortions after six weeks and will need to wait nearly 14 days to end her pregnancy past that point — up from an average 20-mile drive and five-day wait before the ban, the data shows.

The study is a first-of-its-kind look at the practical impact of the new law in a state where 80,000 abortions had taken place each year. The survey was conducted by Caitlin Myers, a professor of economics at Middlebury College in Vermont and a team of undergraduate students, who systematically collected data from 130 clinics in six states and D.C. for the date of their next available appointment for an abortion after the six-week mark.

Although the survey offers only one window into the effect of the law, clinic directors and staff said it matched their own observations in the weeks since Florida banned most abortions on May 1.

Many said fewer Florida women appeared to be leaving the state for abortion care than was widely expected — a finding they largely attributed to increasing availability of telemedicine and abortion pills, in addition to long driving distances that may leave some women feeling they have no choice but to carry their unwanted pregnancy. At least 8,000 women every month are now obtaining abortion pills through the mail in states with strict abortion bans or significant restrictions in place, according to a recent study by the Society of Family Planning.

“Driving distance and appointment availability remain salient components of abortion access, but less so than they were three years ago,” said Myers, who has spent years quantifying the changing landscape of abortion access.

“Telehealth is really a game changer for abortion access,” she said. “But it might be a fragile one.”

Abortion pills have become a major target for many antiabortion advocates frustrated that studies show abortion numbers have continued to rise since Roe v. Wade was overturned. A court challenge seeking to restrict access to the pills, brought by a major antiabortion group, is pending before the Supreme Court, with a decision expected by late June.

Eileen Diamond, who runs an abortion clinic in Florida in the Fort Lauderdale area, said patients she has seen since the ban took effect have been extremely reluctant to leave the state if they are still within the 10-week window for taking abortion pills recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Especially relatively early in pregnancy, she said, many experience “this feeling of disbelief” when they’re told they have to travel at least three states away to get an abortion.

“It’s very daunting for them,” Diamond said. “We are seeing a lot of patients turning to finding alternate ways to get pills by mail.”

Myers began conducting surveys of wait times at regular intervals at over 700 clinics across the United States in March 2022, anticipating that Roe would fall that summer. The results have helped illustrate the changing landscape of abortion access in the two years since.

As soon as Texas enacted its six-week “heartbeat ban” in the fall of 2021 — outlawing most abortions nine months before the fall of Roe — Texas patients quickly overwhelmed clinics in Oklahoma, Kansas and New Mexico, many of which had wait times of several weeks or ran out of appointments altogether, Myers said.

Before the Texas law, approximately 50,000 abortions occurred in the state every year — significantly fewer than had been performed annually in Florida. Despite those numbers, Myers said, “we’re not seeing that level of shock to access with the Florida ban.”

The reason, she said: “a general awareness” of medication and telehealth abortion.

“There are many more options to obtain the pills quickly and cheaply than there used to be,” Myers said.

Since last summer, U.S.-based doctors have been mailing thousands of pills into antiabortion states under “shield laws” recently enacted in a handful of blue states , designed to protect doctors from prosecution. Women in antiabortion states are also accessing pills through at least 25 nonmedical websites and several community-based networks that distribute the pills free.

Amy Hagstrom Miller, who leads Whole Woman’s Health, a national network of abortion clinics, opened a clinic in New Mexico after she was forced to shutter several clinics in Texas when Roe was overturned. The deluge of patients she expected from antiabortion states at that clinic, along with other clinics elsewhere, has yet to materialize, she said.

“We prepared for more of a surge than we’ve seen in any of our clinics,” she said. At her new clinic in New Mexico, which borders Texas, she said, “we’re not even close to capacity.”

With the help of state and national abortion funds, which provide financial support to people seeking abortions, advocates have been able to book flights for patients who want to leave the state for an abortion, Diamond said. Some have been able to fly to D.C. in the morning, have their procedure and return home that night.

For others, travel is more difficult. Several patients she has seen since the ban took effect have not been able to fly because they don’t have valid identification, Diamond said. Others can’t leave because they can’t miss work or don’t have anyone to help with child care.

A Washington Post analysis found that, in total, about 7 million women of reproductive age in Florida and surrounding states will now have to travel longer to receive abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. The average affected woman saw a drive-time increase of more than seven hours, analysis using data from OpenStreetMap shows. The group includes an outsize number of Black women and poor women, compared with the United States as a whole.

Diamond recounted that one of her patients recently arrived in Fort Lauderdale after driving 18 hours from Houston. She had not heard about the new six-week ban, Diamond said, and was already nine weeks pregnant.

“This woman was desperate,” Diamond said. “She had used everything she had to come to us.”

In the end, she drove on for at least 12 hours from Fort Lauderdale to Virginia, Diamond said — and was planning to drive 17 hours home after the procedure.

Before the Florida ban, a Houston resident would have driven 18 hours to get an abortion.

In May, a woman drove from Houston to Fort Lauderdale to get an abortion, having not heard about the ban. She drove on for at least 12 hours to a clinic in Virginia for the procedure.

The total drive time was at least 47 hours.

North Carolina, where abortion is legal until 12 weeks of pregnancy, is the closest state that offers abortions beyond Florida’s six-week limit. But another law, which requires patients to wait at least 72 hours between an initial in-person consultation with a doctor and the procedure, can make traveling there logistically difficult.

One Florida patient recently traveled 23 hours on a Greyhound bus for a consultation appointment at A Woman’s Choice in Charlotte, according to Lakeynn Huffman, the clinic manager — returning home that night because she could not find child care to cover the full 72 hours she had to wait between appointments.

The woman made the same trip two days later, Huffman said — traveling for a total of 92 hours to get an abortion.

Before the ban, a Jacksonville-area resident would have been able to remain in the city for an abortion procedure.

Ordering pills online can be a nerve-racking experience for some patients, Diamond said.

“They’re worried the pills won’t get there, worried they don’t have a clinic to back them up,” she said.

Nearly three weeks after the new ban took effect, Diamond said she had started hearing from far fewer patients in the second trimester, which begins at 13 weeks of pregnancy, beyond the FDA’s 10-week limit for taking abortion pills.

“They’re not coming to clinic. They’re not calling about travel,” she said.

Many, she said, may now assume there is nothing they can do in the face of a six-week ban.

“I think they are carrying these pregnancies,” she said.

What I learned about Blackhawks from the NHL Scouting Combine

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Chicago Blackhawks’ social media team has to be already praying the team takes Artyom Levshunov at No. 2 in the upcoming draft. He’d be a dream subject for them.

Levshunov’s friendly and playful personality was on full display when he met with the media after his NHL Scouting Combine testing Saturday. After shaking hands with nearly every media member, he took a seat and got comfortable as the questions began rolling in.

Here’s a taste of the questions and his answers (edited lightly for clarity and style):

On the combine week: I think it’s been fun. It’s been a real good week for me. I met with a lot of people during this week. I think it’s been (enjoyable) for me.

On whether he’s already researching Chicago: I talked to Chicago a lot of times, too, like I said yesterday. I went to dinner with them. We had a good conversation. I also talked with them during the season. We’ll see. You never know.

On going to dinner with the Blackhawks : It was cool. We had food, guys. We had some good conversations. It was a fun time. We had some fun there. Had some couple beers. Just it was a good time.

On whether he had a good feeling about the Blackhawks drafting him: Any team would be good for me. I just want to be drafted. Any team that has a good organization, they try to care about their players. I just want to be in the NHL someday. It’s my dream to play there.

On enjoying the process: Combine and draft, it’s only once in our lives. Try to have fun, try to enjoy it, of course.

On having fun with all the interviews: Of course, yeah. Yesterday when I talked in front of 30 more people, there was a lot of cameras, it was my first experience like that. It’s fun to meet with new guys, meet with new people. I think it’s fun to meet with new people.

Levshunov was asked whether he foresaw returning to Michigan State for another year.

“We’ll see,” said Levshunov, who measured just short of 6 feet 2 and 205 pounds. “It’s possible. After the draft, we’ll see what team picks me and we’ll decide after the draft.”

Michigan State coach Adam Nightingale has been preparing his pitch for whatever NHL team drafts Levshunov.

“I think you look at the history of college defenseman, and the high-end guys, the common theme, they all played two years,” Nightingale said last season. “You look at Cale Makar , two years, Zach Werenski , two years, Noah Hanifin , two years, Charlie McAvoy , two years, Quinn Hughes , two years, Luke Hughes , two years, Owen Power , two years. Those are all guys who played two years at his position. He’s got the physical attributes, and I’m not saying he couldn’t play, it’s just you’re hopping into the best league in the world. And in that position, you really got to be as close to polished as you can.”

Outside of Macklin Celebrini, Levshunov is the only other player some draft experts believe could play in the NHL next season. It’s always possible for an NHL team to decide to play Levshunov in the AHL for a season, have him start adjusting to the pro schedule and pro opponents and still have his contract slide. College hockey probably isn’t a bad place for him next season, too.

The Blackhawks met with more than 60 players over a handful of days in Buffalo, N.Y. Their dinner with Levshunov was the most notable one, and there’s something to read into that. But it also sounds like the Blackhawks have been meeting with draft-eligible players over dinners throughout the season, so it might not be too valuable of an indicator on other players.

I do believe the Blackhawks are mainly down to Levshunov and Ivan Demidov. Cayden Lindstrom was in the conservation previously, but I don’t think he is any longer. He reportedly had dinners with Columbus , Montreal and Utah at the combine. If the Blackhawks were picking a little further down, he’d likely be in the mix.

Davidson and other members of his staff are expected to travel to Florida next week to meet with Demidov.

Davidson did notably stick around to watch the testing in person this year. He wasn’t there at last year’s testing. He was joined by amateur scouting director Mike Doneghey and head USA scout Rob Facca at the testing Saturday.

To me, it’s another sign of Davidson’s just wanting to be sure he’s checking every single box before deciding on the No. 2 pick.

That said, it doesn’t sound like the teams put a lot of stock into the combine results. The teams can get a sense of the player’s physical movements, but the numbers aren’t often used in an evaluation form. Whether a player does well in the test might depend on where they’ve been training the last few years. Coming from somewhere like the U.S. National Team Development Program will likely mean a player has been following a strict nutritional and weight training regime.

In the case of Levshunov, he’s heading in the right direction in a college program at Michigan State, but he hasn’t had a full offseason under the Spartans strength and conditioning staff’s direction. He didn’t enroll in school until just before the first semester began and just recently finished his freshman season. This should be a significant offseason for him to develop. From what I heard around the combine, there is a belief he has plenty of room to still grow into his body.

Davidson and the Blackhawks have been secretive about their analytics department, and that continues to be the case. When it was asked whether the Blackhawks calculated a positive value in their recent draft pick trade with the New York Islanders compared with what some public models were saying, Davidson said they did and wouldn’t go any further.

As for what Davidson would say, he described trading down from No. 2 as “very unlikely.” As for No. 18, he seems open to anything.

“But again, we’ll see when we get there in Vegas how everything is going, right?” Davidson said. “Again, I’m not opposed to moving back. If it makes sense, I’m not opposed to moving up, but right now, 18 feels … and if we didn’t make that trade, 20 would’ve felt good as well, and 18 feels good.”

The Blackhawks are confident they’re going to get a quality player at 18. Corey Pronman and I are going to dive deeper into those possibilities sometime before the draft.

One of the possibilities is expected to be Michael Hage, who played center with the Chicago Steel the past few seasons. He met with 31 teams, including the Blackhawks, during the combine. I also sat down with him during the week and talked about his week, playing for the Steel and more.

Have you found that all the teams you met with this week had common questions specifically for you?

A lot of it is pretty general. It’s just that they want to know what you think of yourself as a player, think what you need to work on. But most of it is getting to know you as more of a person. They see you play all year long, so they know what type of hockey player you are. It’s just getting to know the person a little more.

Where do you feel like you’re at as a player and what are the steps ahead for you?

I feel good about my game right now. I felt like I took pretty big steps in my game. I felt like I got better as the year went on. I’m excited to go into school next year. The biggest thing for me is doing the work in the summer, so I’m (as) ready as possible when I step into school and continue to work on what I need to work on off the ice and continue to get stronger. I’m happy (with) where my game’s at and going to continue working.

From looking at your numbers and watching video, it seemed like your game went to another level from March on. Is there something that clicked late in the year?

I wouldn’t say one thing. It was my first year somewhat after missing some time last year, it just took some time to feel as comfortable and as confident as I wanted to be, honestly. I felt like over the course of the year I got more confident and felt better about my game every single night. At the same time, our group started playing much better hockey. We felt better as a group. It’s obviously a lot easier to have individual success when your team is having success. I think that was a big part of it. Certain areas of the game, they challenged me, and tried to work on them as much as I could. I felt like I just kind of matured as a player, honestly, and the results came.

Where did they challenge you?

I think my play away from the puck they wanted me to improve on. The message from them was always doing the little things with pride and really focusing on the little details of the game and they usually lead to the big things. That’s something I needed to work on. I felt like I got better as the year went on, honestly. That was the biggest for them, just me being the hardest I could be on every puck battle in my D-zone, backchecking and on the forecheck.

What was your experience like with the Steel and in Geneva?

It was great, honestly. I had a great billett family and that situation was awesome. I was with them for two years. Even when I was hurt, they were unbelievable to me. With the Steel, the coaching staff is so great. I really enjoyed my time there. The opportunity they gave me when I came back from my shoulder injury last year and this year, just how much they helped me as a person and a hockey player, I really enjoyed my time there and had a lot of fun.

Were you able to get into Chicago at all and to any Blackhawks games?

Our ownership, we’re owned by the Hawks now. We tried to get out to a decent amount of games. I think we probably went to a handful. It’s always a fun time, pretty cool building to watch a game. I can’t imagine what it feels like playing there. It’s a pretty fun atmosphere and pretty fun guys to watch.
