Hi there - we are so glad that you have found your way to Cape Safari Park! Cape Safari Park was previously known as Lazy L Safari , which was founded back in 2010 by our parents. They are semi-retiring and the next generation of our exotic animal family is taking over the zoo! We are so excited to see what the future holds for Cape Safari Park!

A little about us:

We are a third generation exotic animal family and our entire lives revolve around some of God's greatest creations. We have three young children ages 7, 4, and 2. Having them grow up in a similar environment as we did is the biggest blessing! Surrounded by love and animals - what else could a kid want?

We want your family to be able to enjoy the same atmosphere! Our hope is to bring lots of new entertainment and educational enrichment to our zoo by adding new ideas and programs to what already exists!

Keep checking in to see what's new at Cape Safari Park! You can also subscribe to our Zoo Newsletter to get the latest on any upcoming special events or additions to the zoo!

We hope to see you soon.

Lazy L Safari Park is a hands-on zoo in Cape Girardeau

timtrudell Cape Girardeau , Missouri 2

Have you seen the movie “We Bought a Zoo?” Well, Cape Girardeau has its own version of that with the Lazy L Safari Park.

Lazy L is a walk-through zoo of “exotic” animals that opened in 2010. The zoo consists of animals from Lazy L Exotic animals farm. The zoo is home to about 50 types of animals.

Zoo visitors can see plenty of goats and peacocks – including white ones (our second time in three months seeing them), as well as camels, zebras, llamas and lemurs.

We started our visit with a trip to the animal barn. It housed a baby bison, calf and deer. It was also home to a 16-year-old Python snake. As I have previously mentioned, I do not like snakes. I immediately stepped back until I felt comfortable enough to proceed.

We checked out a tarantula and a giant lizard.

Camels at the far end of the barn seemed to check out passers-by for some snacking opportunities. Not the people, but the feed they had. A family ahead of us tried feeding them, but mom kept freaking out when the camels came near her hand. Lisa was much braver. She stood near the fence so they didn’t have to strain trying to get to the feed.

Zebras were taking in a late lunch meeting. One seemed to take a mouthful of hay and turn in our direction to check out what was going on while eating.

We had a blast feeding goats in a few spots. The first section of goats seemed to enjoy a game of King of the Mountain. Two kept battling each other on top of a pile of rocks. We even saw an old Billy goat gruff.

The second goat area was along a fenced in area near the main road. Some emus also shared the area with them. Once little goat did his best to get his body out of the fenced area for some treats.

The third area was even more fun. It was part of the petting zoo. They banged against each other to take the feed out of our hands. One little goat roamed the area freely. He took a liking to Lisa, or to the bag of feed she had. We were warned that they would bite through the bottom of the bag to get to the feed.

A wildebeest even tried to get into the action when she was feeding the little goat. That was interesting to watch.

My favorite spot was Parakeet Jungle. The zoo has dozens of small parakeets inside the aviary. They were initially shy and flew to the back of the aviary. However, we pulled out the birdfeed on a stick the zoo gave us and the birds were more than eager to be our friends.

We first reached the treats out toward them. One or two birds would start eating until another flew in and forced them away. Then, the next rotation would go.

They’ll even land on your hand and the stick to eat. Their reservations fade as they sense the food. It was a fun experience.

Along our walk, we checked out a couple of groups of lemurs. It was difficult to get good photos of them behind the fencing they use at Lazy L.

We enjoyed the view of a porcupine fairly up close. The same went for the badger that lived next door.

As we were leaving the zoo, a llama walked up to the fence, so we had a nice view of it. It was like the llama was telling us to have a good day and to come back.

Lazy L is a fun way to spend 1-2 hours. I could see people staying a little longer with smaller children.

Lazy L has a gift shop, concession stand and a picnic shelter.

We recommend checking out Lazy L Safari Park when in Cape Girardeau.

Worst zoo ever it was more like someone's farm, not that many animals we were hopping to see. I would never go here again They have a small gift shop

Very friendly staff and animals. Kids had so much fun feeding the baby goats, pigs, and camel. The birds were fun to feed as well!

lazy safari cape girardeau mo

Unfortunately we had a good time and my toddler had a blast, but the animals don't appear to be taken care of very well. Some were obviously sick. Cages were too small for some. The pigs for example were in a small enclosure, with not much shelter, were living in filth, and didn't have food or water on very hot day. I don't plan on giving them my money anymore. This is sad because I would love to see a quality zoo in the area.

We spent the day here yesterday. Had a great time. Excellent place for kids to interact with the animals.

lazy safari cape girardeau mo

I left with a horrible feeling , more than half of the animals that I saw weren't being taken care of properly they had a 16 ft snake in a super super small box, in fact most of the animals didn't have enough room to move, the camels fur looked matted like they hadn't groomed them properly or at all, the deer had bite marks on their necks and were super irritable it was obviously that they were in distress. I got home and did some research on this place...The things I found are seriously disturbing. ( http://www.semissourian.com/story/63725.html ) So with all that said, if you are a parent or a animal lover PLEASE think twice about going to this road side zoo. It's clear they don't care about their animals or just simply don't have the funding to take care of them the way they should. I've contacted PETA and they said the only way to get this to stop is to stop funding them. P.s. this place actually deserves 0 stars but I had to give at least 1

Awesome little zoo. Feed for the animals was cheap. There is an admission fee. The pony ride was a rip off, one small circle for 5.00. My daughters loved feeding the goats, deer and other animals. Their laughter made it worth the drive. The bird cage was great too! The girls' laughed when the goats sneezed. Gift shop was a little pricey too. Little zoo thats on its way to great things!

Friendly and laid back, a definite if you want to get up close and personal with animals. I fed goats, deer, and even camels. Everything was friendly and came right up to me. The workers were friendly as well. Excellent experience and I would recomend to everyone.
