To choose the best car air beds , I used my own car camping experience with different air mattresses and sleep pads to identify top brands and reputable products within the space. This is why a few weekends ago, the Luno team got their hands dirty and joined the Smith Rock Group for a day of trail maintenance. The Smith Rock Group is a local Bend nonprofit committed to preserving the natural beauty of Smith Rock State Park. In 1993 they started the Spring Thing, an annual park clean up event, which has now grown to be the largest single day climber-led park clean-up event in the United States! Highway Handbook: How To Stay Cool While Camping Description: You’ve got questions? We’ve got answers. That’s the gist of our new educational series, The Highway Handbook. One of our main goals at Luno is to make the outdoors more accessible, and we mainly do that by designing comfortable air mattresses and nifty accessories that help you turn your everyday vehicle into an extraordinary adventure mobile. But gear alone doesn’t remove barriers to the great outdoors, and sometimes, the simple act of sharing knowledge makes all the difference. In The Highway Handbook, our team of car camping experts will answer questions that regularly bombard our DMs. Whether you’re a car camping veteran or new to the game, we hope this series helps you get outside, explore, and enjoy time in nature with friends and family. Wondering how to stay cool while camping? You’re not alone. It’s a question we get asked all the time (thanks for recognizing our expertise on the subject), and it’s also the theme of this month’s Highway Handbook.  How do we stay cool here at Luno? Sunglasses, primarily. The right haircut helps, too–mullets are cool right now. But haircuts can backfire, and the wrong haircut can tank your cool score. Lingo is also key, especially when camping with young, hip people. You might say something like, “This campsite is lit.” This doesn’t mean that wildfire is raging through camp, but rather, the campsite is cool. [Editor’s Note: Ladies and gentlemen, two important errors have come to our attention after the initial publication of this blog post. First of all, people want to learn how to stay cool, temperature-wise, while camping in the summer heat. They aren’t asking us for grooming and fashion advice. We’ve rewritten the article below to help interested campers avoid overheating this summer. Secondly, “lit” is also no longer cool. According to our accountant’s teenageer, the youth don’t use the word anymore. We steered you wrong. If you have since used the word “lit” while camping and faced derision from cool Gen-Z campers due to the errors in this article, we are sorry. Thank you for your understanding. –Luno Journal Upper Management] How To Stay Cool While Camping Staying cool while camping is equal parts art and science. Below, we’ll school you on pre-trip prep work that can help you minimize your exposure to heat, mid-trip tips for airflow and temperature management, as well as gear and apparel we won’t camp in the summer without. If you’re ready to get schooled on cool–for real this time–read up and cool off. Set Up Camp In The Shade This first tip is pretty straightforward: park in the shade to keep your camp setup as cool as possible. If you arrive at camp in the dark, think about where the sun will rise in the morning and park accordingly. Of course, many campsites don’t have shade at all. So what do smart car campers do? They B.Y.O.S. (bring your own shade) from home. How so? Easy. Our Car Window Screens are made from a black mesh material that helps block out UV rays (more on the benefits of these bad boys below). And our Privacy Curtain is even thicker and heavier, keeping the sun out and the sleep in on summer mornings. Pair theses two together for a camp-anywhere summer setup. Bring a Fan And Window Screens The heat isn’t always avoidable. Lucky for you, there is a secret to sleeping well while camping in warmer temperatures: airflow. Pick Your Destination Of Choice Wisely One of the best ways to stay cool while camping is to camp in cool places. Simple as that. In the summer, here are a few tricks we use to target less-than-sizzling locales: We favor high-alpine zones that are naturally cooler. Higher elevations, lower temps–that’s a recipe for a wonderful summer camping trip.  Go coastal! We venture toward the coast where there’s often mellower weather. If fog rolls in at night, we’re stoked. We head north–not south. There’s a time for exploring Baja and below but it ain’t Agosto (August in Spanish), bebe. The PNW and Montana, Canada and Alaska–these are better summer destinations in our opinion.  Don’t even look at the desert. Don’t you dare. Bring A Weather-Appropriate Wardrobe And Sun Protection If heat is in the forecast, packing a lightweight, breathable wardrobe will help you stay cool and comfortable while camping. Our advice? Ditch the cotton. Instead, embrace lightweight synthetics and merino wool, the latter of which actually has natural wicking and anti-odor properties.  Sunshirts with hoods, buffs, and sun hats are also smart moves. Don’t forget the sunscreen, either. Avoiding sunburns is a great way to stay cool and comfy on an adventure. Adjust Your Itinerary As Needed One of many things we love about car camping is that you don’t have an itinerary you’re forced to adhere to. Unlike air travel, there are no cancellation fees or penalties for changing your itinerary. Weather can and should dictate where and when you camp, so use weather apps like AccuWeather or Weather.gov to your advantage. Let’s say you’re plan a camping trip to the Uinta Mountains in the middle of July, but a week out from your trip you realize Utah’s in the middle of a catastrophic heat wave and temperatures won’t dip below triple digits. Pivot your trip to an equally rad destination with less hellish weather. Easy peasy. Let The Temperature And Sun Direction Dictate Your Schedule Don’t force activities regardless of the weather. If you let temperature and sun direction dictate your schedule, you’ll be much better off. For instance, if there’s a hike you want to do, wake up before dawn and get after it early before the peak heat of the day. If you’re on a climbing trip, try to time your climbs so they’re in the shade when you’re on the rock. Stay Hydrated Staying hydrated is super important anytime you’re camping, but especially in the summer heat. And we hate to be the bearers of bad news, but beer doesn’t count. Sorry, but we already proved how uncool we are. Bring plenty of water, ideally in large, reusable jugs. Also, be sure to map out water sources and bring a water filtration system as needed. Embrace The Cold Plunge When we say embrace the cold plunge, we’re not saying you should jump into your cooler–although the occasional dunk of the head into a melted-out beer chest isn’t out of the question. When we camp in the summer, we always like to post up near bodies of water. That might be the mighty Pacific Ocean, or a teeny, tiny snowmelt-fed creek. Dunking in water, especially if it’s chilly, is a fantastic way to cool off and reset your body temperature. Sometimes, we’ll go to bed still wet just to fall asleep before we start sweating! Beat The Heat And Stay Cool While we’re clearly unqualified to keep you looking fresh and feeling lit hip, we’re hopeful this article will help you beat the heat and camp comfortably this summer. We feel obligated to clear that up.  Driver’s Ed is mandatory, boring, and pretty damn important. The course teaches new drivers the rules of the road and minimizes chances of accidents.  Driver’s Shred isn’t mandatory or boring, but it is pretty damn important. The course teaches campers how to turn their vehicles into radical adventure rigs, and it maximizes chances of high stoke levels on the road.  Capiche? Now that we’ve got that squared away, let’s talk shred.  5 Summer Driver’s Shred Articles 1. Mountain Biking Driver’s Shred MTN Bike: How To Turn Your Car, Truck, Or Van Into The Ultimate Mountain Bike Mobile If you dream of road-tripping in search of stunning singletrack, this edition of Driver’s Shred has your name on it. We dive into gear storage recommendations, camping strategies, bike safety, trailside maintenance, and more. Here are a few of our favorite tips and tricks from this MTB camping guide:  Tip # 1: Prepare for your trip like a pro Prepping for a mountain bike camping trip is multi-faceted, and we like to prep our vehicle, bike, and body before any singletrack-seeking sojourn. Vehicle Prep: The best trails are often found in remote zones. Make sure your vehicle is in ship-shape before embarking on a mountain bike adventure. Schedule a visit with your mechanic or pop the hood and give the engine a once over. This is solid advice for any adventure that’ll take you deep into the wilderness. Bike Prep: Similarly, make sure your mountain bike is in ripping condition prior to departure. The last thing you want is to pull up to a remote trailhead only to find out your brakes are malfunctioning or your chain is busted. Give your bike some TLC before you head out, or bring it to the bike shop before a big MTB expedition.  Rider Prep: Now that your bike is in good shape, make sure you are, too. Log trail miles ahead of your trip if possible, or, at the very least, hit the spin bike. The fitter you are, the more you’ll be able to make the most of your adventure.  Tip #2: Keep your bike as safe as possible on the road Nothing cuts a mountain bike trip short like a stolen bike. Minimize your chances of such a tragedy by doing the following: Out-of-sight storage: Most bike theft is opportunistic. If you can stash your bike out of sight in your SUV, truck shell, or van, that’s your best bet.  Reliable locks: Use reliable locks, but recognize that most locks only temporarily hinder determined bike thieves.  Line of sight: Keep locked bikes within view if possible.  Insure your bike: The best insurance, in this case, is actual insurance. Cover your bike with renter’s or home owner’s insurance so that if it does get stolen, you can easily replace it.   2. Fly Fishing Driver’s Shred Fly-Fishing: How To Turn Your Car, Truck, Or Van Into The Ultimate Fly-Fishing Base Camp Camping and fishing go hand in hand. If you love the idea of packing up your fly rod and chasing trout in unexplored rivers, be sure to give this edition of Driver’s Shred a read.  Tip #1: Do your research It’s always key you do your research before a road trip, but it’s super important when you’re planning a fly-fishing trip. You need to be aware of fishing regulations and have a valid fishing license, as this will help you avoid unwanted fines or unintentionally disrupting delicate ecosystems.  Research is also critical on a fishing trip because you’ll find beta on waterways, species, and hatches that will influence what rods you bring, what rivers you fish, and what flies you’ll use.  We like to do research ahead of time, both online and by reading fly fishing guidebooks. Then, once we’re on the road, we’ll swing by local fly shops for the latest conditions and reports. And of course, to stock up on productive flies.  Tip #2: Be smart about wet gear storage Anglers who mismanage wet waders and muddy boots can quickly turn their vehicle into a malodorous, inhospitable mess. Not only are you ultra-mobile and able to hit different spots depending on the conditions, but you also have room for multiple surfboards, wetsuits, and extra gear. In this Driver’s Shred, we deep dive into surf road trips, our go-to surf gear, and common mishaps surfers face on the road.  Tip #1: Apps are your friend  Car campers of all creeds seem to forget that the smartphone is an indispensable piece of road trip gear, so long as you load it with relevant apps and maps before you lose service.  Our favorite app for surf trips is Surfline. Racks are a great way to increase your gear-hauling capacity and free up space in your vehicle.  Surf racks have their pros and cons, which we go into in depth in this Driver’s Shred story, but we’re big fans of using them for quick trips to the beach. We love that they keep wet boards out of your sleeping quarters after surfing. That said, if you’re doing a longer stretch of driving and hitting the freeway, surf racks can reduce your gas mileage and damage your boards, so in these instances we like to throw boards in the back of the rig.  4. Trail Running Driver’s Shred Trail Running: How To Turn Your Car, Truck, Or Van Into The Ultimate Trail Running Base Camp Trail runners have it pretty easy compared to surfers, bikers, and anglers when it comes to gear hauling. After all, all you really need is a pair of running shoes! But that doesn’t mean that trail runners can’t benefit from activity-centric planning and prep. In this Driver’s Shred article, we dissect trail running road trips. The guide should be helpful for new trail runners and veteran marathoners alike.  Tip #1: Bring recovery gear  When we’re on a trail running road trip (or any adventure that’s tough on the body), we like to bring PT-approved recovery gear. Massage guns and foam rollers are a welcome treat. A yoga mat can feel like a downright luxury after a long trail run when you’re deep in the wilderness. We also always like to bring a first aid kit, and we tweak that kit for trail running by adding extra blister dressings, KT tape, so on and so forth.   Tip # 2: Stay hydrated Staying hydrated is easier said than done when you’re camping, especially if you’re dispersed camping and there are no amenities or potable water to be found.  We always suggest a two-fold hydration strategy when camping:  Bring plenty of water using large, five-gallon jugs.   Map out water sources and bring a water-filtration system that allows you to drink from lakes and rivers. 5. Climbing Driver’s Shred Climbing: How To Turn Your Car, Truck, or Van Into the Ultimate Climbing Base Camp Before “car camping” or “vanlife” existed in our collective lexicon, dirtbag climbers were living out of their vehicles a rope-length from world-class climbing crags. If you want to keep that dirtbag dream alive, we’ve got you covered with this climbing edition of Driver’s Shred.  Tip # 1: Stock up on beta Beta is invaluable to climbers. If you’re unfamiliar with the word, “beta” refers to information that helps climbers tackle a route. It can include everything from holds to avoid, quality of anchors, or even places to park.  We always recommend car camping climbers download beta on smartphones, and we go over a couple of apps we like in the Driver’s Shred article. It’s also a smart idea to buy a climbing guidebook ahead of your trip, as they have detailed descriptions, useful photos, and, unlike your smartphone, they won’t die at the most inopportune times.  Tip # 2: Respect the locals Whenever we’re camping, we’re inevitably in someone else’s backyard. Whether you’re climbing or indulging in another sport or activity, respect (hopefully) gets respect. Be polite, minimize your impact, and you’ll have better chances of making friends at the crag. At the very least, you’ll minimize your chances of pissing off grumpy locals.  2 Winter Driver’s Shred Articles 1. Backcountry Driver’s Shred Backcountry: How To Turn Your Car, Truck, Or Van Into a Backcountry Base Camp We love winter car camping, especially when skiing untracked powder is involved. Backcountry skiers and splitboarders can camp in certain mountain pass parking lots or remote winter trailheads, earning turns all day before returning to cozy camp setups at night. Of course, whenever extreme temperatures and weather are in play, it’s especially important to have your operation dialed. Here are a couple of tips that are relevant to any winter camper bedding down in their vehicle:  Tip #1: Carry a satellite communication device This tip isn’t relegated to winter–any camper heading into the wilderness should have a satellite communication device. We always recommend Garmin’s InReach. It’s compact, reliable, and easy to use. This is precisely the type of emergency gear that’s better to have and not need it, than need it and not have it. Not only is a satellite communication device a smart idea for your personal safety, but it also offers your loved ones peace of mind knowing you have a means of communication. If you ask us (or fretting family members), that peace of mind is priceless.  Tip #2: Avalanche safety comes first Anytime you’re backcountry skiing, it’s mission-critical that avalanche safety is top of mind. Take avalanche courses from certified instructors, read the avalanche forecast religiously, buy avalanche safety gear (beacon, shovel, probe), and learn how to use it. Practice using that avalanche safety gear with your backcountry ski partners, so that rescue protocols are second nature for your entire crew in the event of an emergency.  2. Skiing & Snowboarding Driver’s Shred Skiiing or Snowboarding: How To Turn Your Car, Truck, Or Van Into The Ultimate Skiing and Snowboarding Base Camp Ski-in, ski-out accommodations are the dream for every skier and snowboarder. But those prices? Total nightmare. You may be surprised to learn that many ski resorts have special parking lots that allow overnight camping, often for only 30 to 50 dollars. You can snooze on your ultra-comfy Luno camping mattress, roll out of bed, and be on the chairlift in minutes.  Tip # 1: Make reservations if possible  Now, don’t get us wrong–we love free car camping. However, condensation can be managed and mitigated with a few smart strategies:  Don’t bring wet gear into the vehicle if you can avoid it. Bring your boots in, of course, you need to thaw those puppies. But skis and snowboards can stay outside, preferably locked in a roof rack or box.  Keep a utility towel on hand to sop up condensation as it occurs on glass windows.  Crack a window in the front seat and another in the backseat to create airflow. — Base Camp Is Where You Park It There you have it–seven articles packed with tricks and tips to help you camp and shred like a pro. You’re probably not battling blizzards, digging your rig out of snow banks, navigating icy roads, or dealing with life-threatening frost. However, summer camping isn’t without its hurdles. Namely, sweltering heat that can make a grown man cry and perspire in unison, until tributaries of tears and sweat unite upon the cheek in one raging river of salt and sadness. Oh, yeah–and crowds that can make even your favorite campgrounds feel claustrophobic. But fear not, dear camper! In this helpful guide, we’ll help you brave the heat, ditch the crowds, and make the most of the warm weather. Whether you’re camping in a car, truck, or van, we’ve got you dialed with our favorite summer camping gear. Plus, you’ll find a few tips to help you make the most of your time spent in the great outdoors this summer. So read up, gear up, and get ready to camp. 1. When you’re camping in your vehicle, you have a flat platform to sleep on built into your backseat. Increasing Your Camping Options: When you’re tent camping, you’re limited to existing campgrounds and dispersed camping. When you’re camping in your vehicle, you can also camp in Walmart and Cracker Barrel parking lots and rest areas. You can even get away with stealth camping in quiet neighborhoods. We’re all for unplugging in nature, but at the very least, keeping your cell phone juiced up is a smart play for emergencies. Do a rough calculation of how much juice you tend to use on any given trip, then go from there. Bring Extra Water And A Water Filtration System One of the main snafus campers run into during warmer months? Dehydration. To sidestep such moments of unbearable thirst, come prepared with the following: Bring more water than you think you’ll need. These five-gallon jugs are a great place to start. Freeze Nalgenes before you leave the house, then chuck ‘em in your cooler. These XXL ice blocks will help keep your perishables chilled for longer, and you’ll also be sure to have cold water days into your trip. If you’re going to be far from potable water for weeks on end–or if you just always like to have a backup plan–bring a water filtration system like these ones from MSR. 6. I have waited to purchase a Luno mattress for quite some time, and I finally decided to buy one at the Overland Expo West this year. I used it last weekend and it was the best sleep I have had in my car. The 4Runner does have the uneven dip when the seats are down, and I used some towels and blankets to even it out and two pillows at the end under the mattress. It kept the mattress level and it was like sleeping on a regular air mattress. It is easy to inflate and deflate, as well as adjust the amount of air you want in each side. I am very happy with my purchase.

Across the board, our surveyed users gave the delivery process a near-perfect score . They said the site is user-friendly and the mattress options are clearly laid out. When browsing each product, there's plenty of information and it's easy to select the size and firmness level you want.

On the downside, the site doesn't have the same easy-to-access live chat as some other retailers. There is one listed on their contact page, but our tester couldn't get it to work properly. We were, however, easily able to access a customer service agent when we used the contact phone number provided. The agent we spoke to was both polite and knowledgable about the products.

When ordering directly from Serta's website, standard doorstep delivery is free, though you can opt to pay $150 for in-home setup, which includes removal of your old mattress as long as it's in sanitary condition. The brand says, no matter which delivery service you opt for, you can expect it to take anywhere between two to four weeks for your mattress to be ready for delivery . This is a bit slower than some other brands, particularly some of the more popular boxed mattresses, but overall, consumers we polled said they found the process easy and convenient.

"After about a week, I received a text message prompting me to select a delivery date. The soonest available date was about a week out, so all together, it took about two weeks for my mattress to arrive," our tester reported. "I appreciated how seamless the process was, though. I was able to do it on my own time, and didn't have to chat with a customer service agent."

Users we surveyed said setup was incredibly easy, whether they opted to go the DIY route or have Serta's delivery team put their mattress in place. "I received a call 15 minutes before their arrival, which was well within my delivery window," said one tester who opted for in-home setup. "The delivery team brought the mattress upstairs, put it into place, removed the packaging and was out the door all within less than five minutes."

Trial period

Like many mattresses these days, you can test the Serta Perfect Sleeper Hybrid Mattress before fully committing — even if you can't make it to a brick-and-mortar location. Serta offers a 120-day trial period, which begins on the day of delivery. According to the brand, Serta mattresses last anywhere from seven to 10 years. Overall, users we surveyed are divided on longevity; some found the mattress maintained its comfort even after eight years, while others noticed signs of sagging within three years.

If you notice your mattress sagging prematurely, our experts offer the following advice:

• Use a compatible base: Different mattresses may require different bases or foundations. We recommend checking with the brand to determine what kind of base you should use. For its mattresses, Serta says box springs, platform frames and adjustable bases are all suitable. When using a slatted base, ensure the slats are fairly close together. Additional legs in the middle of the bed can offer even more support.
• Rotate your mattress: Sleeping in the same spot over and over again creates pressure in targeted areas, eventually leading to indentations or sagging. Switching the direction of the foot and head of your mattress can help, as can rotating it regularly, since both changes distribute the pressure across different areas. Serta recommends rotating the mattress every six months, at minimum.
• Add a topper: A mattress topper not only provides an extra layer of support for you, but can also serve as an extra layer of protection for your mattress. It's important to note it won't fix existing sagging, but it can help prevent further sagging, plus keep you more comfortable.

Woman arrested after dead body 'wrapped' in mattress found on car's back seat, police say

A 32-year-old woman was arrested in Minnesota after police said a dead body was found in the back seat of a vehicle she was driving.

Margot Lewis, of North Liberty Iowa, was driving a Chevrolet Sonic in the eastbound lane of Interstate 90 in Olmsted County — about 100 miles southeast of Minneapolis — around 7 a.m. Saturday when her car hit the guard rails and crashed, the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office said in a court complaint.

A passerby helped Lewis out her car and was tending to her when the police arrived. As the police inspected the vehicle to see if anyone else was in the vehicle, officers said they located a 35-year-old female in the back. The body of the deceased, identified as Liara Tsai, 35, from Minneapolis, was "wrapped in a bed sheet, a blanket, a futon-style mattress, and a tarp," court documents said. The body was "cold to the touch," and no pulse was detected, officers said. A "large wound on the right side of the neck around the carotid artery," was also observed by the police while the bed sheet had dried blood stains.

"The condition of the deceased was suspicious, and it was immediately apparent that the death was not a result of the motor vehicle accident," the sheriff's department said in a news release .

Preliminary information, based on an autopsy conducted on Sunday, provided by the Medical Examiner's Office suggested that the "fatal injuries suffered by victim were not caused by, and preceded, the car crash," the affidavit said.

In an update on Wednesday , the sheriff's office said that the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office listed the initial cause of death as "multiple sharp force injuries." Multiple agencies, including the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, also searched a residence in Minneapolis, purportedly belonging to the victim, and "a scene indicating violence was located inside the residence," the sheriff's office said in their update.

Driver accused of interference with dead body

Lewis, meanwhile, was medically cleared and transferred to the Adult Detention Center and placed under arrest on suspicion of interference with dead body or scene of death, the sheriff's office said. She continues to be in detention as of Wednesday afternoon, according to the center's custody list .

Lewis appeared at the Olmsted County Court Tuesday morning and again in the afternoon and is scheduled to appear in court next on July 5. There is no attorney yet listed for Lewis in this matter.

CNET sleep experts JD Christison and Aly Lopez tested over a dozen travel pillows.

CNET senior video producer and sleep expert JD Christison and I conducted hands-on -- and heads-on -- test of all the travel pillows in this best list, including our honorable mentions at the end. The characteristics we focused on included portability, adjustability, materials or construction, additional features (such as washability) and price . 

We unpacked the travel pillows, discussing our initial thoughts on each one. We then put them to the test by wearing them in the car while traveling on bumpy and windy roads to see if they were able to keep us comfortable and supported. We each took turns testing the pillows by sitting in various positions and wearing them in different ways as the pillow allowed.

After unpacking the pillows, forming our initial thoughts and opinions and testing them on a long car ride, JD and I also tested them individually over a few weeks while traveling in the car and on a few flights. Best overall travel pillow

JD and I immediately enjoyed the feel and fit of Travelrest's Nest Ultimate Memory Foam, which offers a traditional travel pillow shape and design. Its high-quality memory foam molded nicely around our necks and shoulders, and the microfiber cover is super soft and cozy. It comfortably supported our heads without feeling overbearing.

This pillow's textured backing helps hold it in place, which worked well in our testing. The Travelrest Nest pillow easily squishes down to a quarter of its full size to fit in the small carrying pouch. It's easy to travel with and keep clean in the bag. The cover is completely removable and machine washable, another trait we recommend looking for in a travel pillow.

It has a velcro strap in the front, but this pillow is not as adjustable as some of the other pillows we tested. It's a one-size-fits-all pillow, so it may be a little big for individuals with smaller frames. At $40, this is an average price point for travel pillows of this quality.

Best adjustable travel pillow.

The Trtl Travel Pillow wins as the best adjustable pillow thanks to its unique ergonomic design, which differs from all the other brands we tested. While testing the Trtl pillow during a long car ride, I eventually forgot I was wearing it because it was so comfortable -- which is saying a lot because I'm particular about anything that goes on or around my neck (you'll see me wearing Trtl, but never a turtleneck). My head felt entirely supported without that claustrophobic feeling I've experienced with bulkier travel pillows. 

This is not your typical U-shaped travel pillow. The Trtl has an internal support piece that you place against your neck and jaw on one side, wrap the soft, hypoallergenic fabric like a scarf and secure it with the velcro piece. The velcro is impressively sticky, which I look for to ensure that the product will be long-lasting. The materials are lightweight and thin, folding up small and packing nicely into the waterproof bag. It's also machine washable and fast-drying; all you have to do is remove the plastic insert first.

While JD and I are very different heights, he and I found the pillow adjustable enough to fit comfortably around our necks. However, Trtl also offers the Trtl Pillow Plus , which is height-adjustable with a twist toggle and designed specifically for various heights, from petite to tall. It also offers a cooling travel pillow with more breathable and thermoregulating materials for those who run hot. Retailing for $60, the Trtl Travel Pillows falls on the more expensive side, but we think it's worth it.

AirComfy Ease Inflatable Travel Pillow

Best affordable travel pillow.

AirComfy's Ease Inflatable Travel Pillow is small but mighty -- and it's even smaller in its carrying bag, complete with a convenient carabiner to clip onto your luggage. It has a unique bowtie shape with an elastic band that allows you to attach it to the headrest on your seat to keep it in place. You can also place it behind your back if you need lumbar support.

At $24, this is one of the most affordable travel pillows we've seen with this level of quality and functionality. The size isn't adjustable, but you can alter the firmness by adding more or less air as you blow it up, which only takes a few breaths to fill up completely. JD and I were surprised by how lightweight yet durable it felt, and we agreed that it seemed like it would hold up for many trips.

It's worth noting that you may be limited in where you can use it. For example, if you're in the middle seat on a flight, you'd only be able to put it behind you with your head upright (you wouldn't be able to rest your head to the side). The soft velvet pillowcase is removable and machine-washable, which is a nice touch.

Best inflatable travel pillow.

The All-In-One Ultimate Travel Pillow by Travelrest was the best inflatable travel pillow we tested. Inflatable pillows have innate travel advantages, such as deflating and packing up super small. They're also great for adjusting the firmness by controlling how much air you put into them.

The Travelrest All-In-One pillow has memory foam inserts, giving it an extra oomph of comfort and support. Since it goes around your body like a sling or messenger bag and rests on a shoulder, you don't even need a seatback to use it. You can comfortably rest your head while sitting in the middle or aisle seats of an airplane without having anything to lean against.

One downside is having to blow it up on the plane while sitting in tight quarters with strangers and moving it around to the opposite shoulder if you want to rest your head the other way. On the plus side, it takes little effort to inflate -- we found that approximately three or four easy puffs will do the trick. Its luxury velour cover is soft and comfortable, removable and machine washable. For $40, we think this is a great value. Travelrest has a similar version without the velvet cover for $10 less.

Ostrichpillow Original Napping Pillow

Best unique travel pillow.

Ostrichpillow's Original Napping Pillow quickly became JD's favorite. This unique pillow may make you look like an alien or a weird bug, but don't fret -- the sleep you get while wearing it is worth any strange looks you might receive in public. This fully encapsulating pillow blocks light and noise, creating a cozy cocoon for your whole head, unlike the other travel pillows we tested.

This pillow can be used to catch some Zzzs anytime and anywhere, not just while traveling. The materials are incredibly soft, and the inside has extra microbead filling -- it's truly the ideal environment for taking a nap. We did notice that it becomes a little warm after a while, so if you're a naturally hot sleeper, this may not be the best pick for you.

Because of its bulkier design, it's not as easily portable as other travel pillows. It's also one-size-fits-all, so it's not adjustable, but with the added hand and armholes at the top, you can comfortably wear this pillow while lying or sitting against any surface, from the airplane seat to napping on the airport floor. Some users even wear the Original Napping Pillow in bed at night to help them fall asleep faster.

After wearing it for a while, we were impressed by how breathable it is, even with the hood and eyemask fully drawn. You can block out the world entirely without feeling constricted or claustrophobic, which makes it especially ideal for long flights and trips. It's like being inside a mini sensory deprivation tank, making sleeping easier while traveling. The hood is large and spacious enough to wear with over-the-ear headphones.

The neck pillow's design was initially inspired by a neck brace, which Pluto dialed back to make it feel supportive and cushioning. The velcro strap around the neck pillow has a strong stick, and makes the pillow comfortably adjustable.

Pluto thought of everything with the Pod 2.0, and it's obviously been constructed based on feedback from frequent flyers, flight attendants and sleep experts. It rolls up like a burrito and packs small. The outer surfaces are machine washable; all you have to do is remove the foam inside first. If you're concerned about people staring at you while wearing this travel pillow, don't be -- they're probably just jealous.

Google Maps to make group travels easier with this upcoming feature

I t looks like Google Maps, which is a web mapping platform, plans to introduce a multi-car navigation feature. Reportedly, the new feature can help to bring enhanced functionality for those travelling in groups too, via a potential multi-car navigation feature.

According to a patent filed by Google with the US Patent and Trademark Office (via @xleaks7) on June 25, the search giant is ‘developing plans for a feature which allows users from different locations to navigate to a shared destination within a specified time.’

As reported by, “Providing Navigation Instructions to One Device in View of Another Device” patent, the new feature is for a navigation service that can determine multiple users travelling to a common destination from different origin points.

The new feature is expected to have access to the calendar schedule and messages of users to determine the travelling intentions of users. 

If multiple users are detected, it is claimed to coordinate the travel.The new feature seems to be sending them invites to join the multi-car navigation. Eventually it will also be providing directions to the same destination within similar timelines

The ‘way’ ahead

With the proposed feature,you might be able to place explicit requests for multi-car navigation when organising trips. The navigation service can indicate the locations of all users travelling on the map, routes shared by all parties, identify places where they can wait for each other and also suggest speed adjustments, according to the patent. 

According to sources, Google Maps will also offer ETA information for all members of the group. This will help you to keep a track when others are projected to arrive at the destination. Additionally, it can also offer real-time information and up-to-date traffic data obtained from the first vehicle driving to the configured destination.

These features can avoid potential slowdowns, like accidents and traffic jams, and guide the rest of the group on an alternative route if it discovers a major delay. Furthermore, the feature is expected to work with smartphones not only operating as standalone but also devices connected to a vehicle’s infotainment system through USB or Bluetooth, the patent highlighted.
