Pearl Harbor and Historic Honolulu City Tour Departing Waikiki, Oahu

About your tour.

Book your Pearl Harbor Honolulu tour with us today and save on your bookings. Oahu’s past comes to life as you experience two distinct yet equally important periods in Hawaii’s history with our knowledgeable and friendly guide. We start at Pearl Harbor where you will come face to face with the dramatic and tragic events of December 7, 1941 when the Japanese forces launched a surprise attack on Oahu. The USS Arizona took a direct hit, sank within minutes, and 1,177 seamen went down with their ship. Watch these historic events unfold during the 23-minute documentary complete with original archival footage of that fateful morning. Think about these lost heroes as you cross the harbor in a Navy vessel en-route to the USS Arizona Memorial which is suspended over the sunken battleship. Step aboard the iconic white Memorial and take in the quiet and reverential environment. You are now standing over the Arizona hull, the final resting place for those brave seamen. In the Shrine Room, their names and ranks are inscribed in marble. Look into the water and note the oil drops – “The Black Tears of the Arizona” – that still rise to the surface from the battleship hull after nearly eight decades.

Back at Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, the museum houses the Road to War and Attack galleries with photos, memorabilia, and artifacts along with an excellent bookstore featuring WWII memorabilia, books, and souvenirs.

After Pearl Harbor, our tour continues to Historic Downtown Honolulu  where famous buildings recall Hawaii’s time as a royal kingdom. Our expert guide will point out famous architectural landmarks like Iolani Palace (built by Hawaii’s last reigning king), Kawaiahao Church, and the statue of King Kamehameha the Great who united the Hawaiian Islands under his rule in 1810.

Experience Oahu’s incredible history with our unique tour packages. Book your tours now!

Pearl Harbor & Honolulu City Tour

Activity times, what's included, description.

Experience the highlights of the #1 attraction on Oahu and see many other Honolulu landmarks while on the Pearl Harbor & Honolulu City Tour. If you have limited time on your vacation schedule or simply prefer a short trip to Pearl Harbor, this tour is a good fit. Round-trip transportation from Waikiki, a knowledgeable tour guide, and tickets to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and USS Arizona Memorial are included.

city tour honolulu

As you travel toward the headquarters of the United States Pacific Fleet, enjoy the scenery and take mental notes as your tour guide shares the tips and tricks to getting the most out of your time at Pearl Harbor.

Your tour starts at the WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument. The seemingly endless exhibits, memorabilia, and artifacts in the museum will help you retrace the events leading up to the December 7, 1941 surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Don’t miss the 23-minute film with actual footage captured on the “date which will live in infamy.”

A Navy vessel will transport you to the Arizona Memorial, built directly over the submerged wreckage of the USS Arizona, the final resting place for so many servicemen. As you witness the “Black Tears of the Arizona,” the slowly seeping oil from the ship, feel the emotional gravity emanating from the memorial. Take some time to acknowledge the sacrifice made as you read the names of the 1177 men listed on the Remembrance Wall.

city tour honolulu

Before you know it, you will be relaxing in air conditioning as your tour continues to the Punchbowl National Cemetery, located in the crater of an extinct volcano. The Hawaiian name for Punchbowl is “Puowaina,” which aptly translates to “Hill of Sacrifice.” There are over 13,000 WWII military personnel laid to rest here, including some of the casualties from Pearl Harbor. There is a great sense of serenity in this military cemetery.

Learn about Hawaii’s history and culture through your guide’s colorful commentary as you pass by landmarks such as the Hawaii State Capitol Building. You will also see Iolani Palace, the home of the Hawaiian monarchy until Queen Lili’uokalani was overthrown in 1893.

city tour honolulu

The tour will stop at the King Kamehameha Statue, a towering 18-foot-tall bronze statue that was cast in Italy. King Kamehameha I was a great warrior who united the Hawaiian Islands into one kingdom in 1810.

A professional guide and pre-arranged logistics make a huge difference when you’re on a tight schedule, and the Pearl Harbor & Honolulu City Tour takes care of all of that.

Know before you book:

  • We encourage visitors to not bring bags to Pearl Harbor. There is often a line to put your bag in storage and to retrieve it. Standing in this long line may prevent you from getting your tickets for the Arizona Memorial. That is a mistake that you do not want to make.
  • The fee for baggage storage at Pearl Harbor is $6.00.
  • Tour buses do not permit guests to leave bags in the vehicle.

Pearl Harbor Hours:

  • Daily from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Visiting Honolulu Oahu FAQs

Honolulu is the name of a city, and Oahu is the name of the island on which Honolulu is located. The  airport  is located in Honolulu, so all flights to Oahu land in Honolulu. You’ll find most Oahu excursions in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The best time to see whales in Hawaii is from  December  to  May or during the winter months. That’s when the whale migration passes through the islands. You’ll definitely want to book your Oahu whale-watching tour ahead of time, as they tend to sell out quickly.

Honolulu is pretty fun year-round; however, there are usually fewer crowds (and better travel deals) if you go from mid-April  to  June  or  September  to mid-December. Even though this is the shoulder season, there are still tons of things to do in Honolulu for all types of travelers. That’s why I think it’s the best time to go to Honolulu.

It is best to spend at least 3 to 5 days in Oahu in total. You can take one or two day trips from Honolulu to experience the North Shore and other areas of the island that you want. Otherwise, you can enjoy all the Honolulu sightseeing and Hawaii excursions Honolulu offers!

Yes, you can find a hop-on, hop-off Honolulu tour . These Honolulu hop-on, hop-off bus tours take you all over the island and are a fantastic experience if you want to explore all the hidden gems in Oahu!

While you can walk around in Honolulu to explore and go sightseeing at the top sights in the area, you will probably want to go on either the Honolulu or Waikiki excursions conveniently located and offered right in town.

Tours in Honolulu Wrap Up

Honolulu is a bustling city full of adventure and culture. If you’re planning to visit Oahu, make sure to take advantage of the many different things there are to do in Honolulu.

Best Places to stay in Honolulu

Now that you know some of the best Honolulu Hawaii tours to book before your trip, let’s talk about some of my favorite places to stay in Honolulu.

If you’re looking for a Waikiki hotel with a party vibe, you’ll want to book the  Alohilani Hotel . It’s right across from Waikiki Beach, and it has an awesome infinity pool where you can get the ultimate Instagram shot!  Read my full Alohilani Resort review  HERE .

For families heading to Honolulu with kids, it doesn’t get much better than the  Hilton Hawaiian Village . There are tons of shops, restaurants, and activities on the premises, and you won’t even need to rent a car.  Read my full Hilton Hawaiian Village review  HERE .

And for people who don’t want to be in the heart of Waikiki, try the  Ala Moana Hotel . It’s right next to Ala Moana Center (the largest outdoor shopping mall in the world).

Pearl Harbor Visitors Center

Submit a review, frequently asked questions, what is the baggage policy.

No bags of any size are allowed anywhere at Pearl Harbor. This includes backpacks, camera bags, purses, luggage, and fanny packs must all be left at the baggage storage at the entrance to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. For diaper needs, we suggest parents and caregivers include these baby items in a clear sealable under the stroller seat for clear visibility and access.

Where can I pick up my audio tour headset?

You can pick up your headset for the audio tour near the Information Desk at the Visitors Center.

Can I bring a stroller, wheelchair, or mobility device?

Pearl Harbor is an accessible site, there are no hills, and the paths are mostly flat. Wheelchairs are not available for rent at the park. There are benches placed around the visitor center and there are wheelchair locks on the US Navy navy boats to and from the memorial that sport visitors back and forth to the Memorial.

Motorized mobility devices are welcome at the Visitor Center and on US Navy Vessels, and the USS Arizona Memorial.

Strollers are welcome on site but can only go so far as the USS Arizona Memorial pre-boarding area at the Park Theater. Strollers are not permitted on US Navy vessels or the USS Arizona Memorial, please bring a baby carrier as an alternate option in these areas.

Can I bring food and beverages?

Due to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial's no-bag policy, only bring snacks and water bottles that you can carry. There is a small snack shop on site that carries various sundry snacks and cold beverages as well as restaurants throughout the area. There are water fountains located throughout the park to use or refill water bottles.

What is appropriate dress and attire?

We recommend that all visitors consider this site is for remembrance and reflection of the loss of life in service to the United States, therefore please plan for appropriate dress. Battle dress uniform is not allowed on the memorial, though it is allowed throughout the visitor center and at sites on Ford Island. Military visitors are welcome to wear civilian attire when visiting.

Come prepared with comfortable shoes as you will be on your feet throughout your visit, including a hat, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen are recommended.

Hawaii Tours FAQ

The ideal stay on Oahu can vary, but a common recommendation is about 5 to 7 days. This allows you to explore the island’s major attractions, enjoy some beach time, and get a taste of its unique culture. Of course, the more time you have, the more you can discover!

Oahu is beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit for great weather and fewer crowds is typically from mid-April to early June and September to mid-December. These are the shoulder seasons, providing a more relaxed and pleasant experience.

It takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to drive around the entire island if you’re taking the scenic route without many stops. However, exploring the island thoroughly with stops at various attractions will take a full day or more. For reference, our Circle Island Tour lasts around 9 hours.

Guided tours offer you the expertise of local guides who can provide insights, take you to the best spots, and ensure you make the most of your visit. Whether it’s a historical tour, a hiking adventure, or a cultural exploration, guided tours can make your Oahu experience truly memorable.

Among the multitude of tours available on Oahu, the two most iconic and highly sought-after experiences are the Circle Island Tours and Pearl Harbor Tours. These tours have consistently garnered immense popularity among visitors, offering distinct and compelling attractions that captivate the hearts of tourists from around the world.

While several transportation options are available, guided bus tours stand out as the most comfortable and economical means of experiencing all that Hawaii has to offer. Guided bus tours provide an unbeatable combination of comfort, convenience, and affordability. They offer travelers a stress-free and leisurely way to explore Hawaii’s most famous attractions and hidden gems.

For your first visit to Hawaii, Oahu is an ideal choice due to its well-developed infrastructure, making it easy to explore the island. Oahu offers a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury resorts to budget-friendly choices, and is equipped with modern amenities. You can enjoy diverse activities, from relaxing on famous beaches like Waikiki to exploring cultural sites like Pearl Harbor. The island’s culinary scene and cultural experiences are rich and varied, providing a well-rounded introduction to Hawaii’s offerings. Whether you’re interested in relaxation, adventure, or cultural immersion, Oahu has something to offer every traveler.

Hawaii’s weather is characterized by a tropical climate, offering warm temperatures year-round. Coastal areas typically experience temperatures in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit (20s to 30s Celsius) during the day, with relatively mild fluctuations between seasons. Trade winds provide a pleasant breeze, especially in the summer. While Hawaii does have wet and dry seasons, rain showers are common but brief, with the wetter season occurring from November to March. The leeward (west) sides of the islands tend to be drier, while the windward (east) sides receive more rainfall. Overall, Hawaii offers pleasant weather for outdoor activities and beach visits throughout the year.

Choosing the best Hawaiian island to visit depends on your preferences. Oahu is great for first-timers, offering a mix of culture, activities, and infrastructure. Maui is known for its natural beauty, including the Road to Hana and Haleakalā. The Big Island (Hawaii) is perfect for adventure seekers with its volcanoes and diverse landscapes. Kauai is a haven for nature lovers, famous for its lush, pristine scenery. Molokai and Lanai are quieter and less touristy, ideal for a more relaxed experience.

Go scuba diving in honolulu at night and experience active marine life in the dark.

Scuba diving (anywhere around the world) mostly happens in broad daylight; however, night diving is a bucket list experience because it allows divers to witness the marine world at a unique time. Many species "wake up" at night and become extremely active, exhibiting behaviors that they wouldn't normally engage in during the daytime. Night diving in Honolulu is no different; although, most diving happens during daytime hours, nighttime diving is also popular among scuba fans.

The top dive sites in Honolulu and Ohau in general include the Sea Tiger Shipwreck, YO-257 Shipwreck, and the Corsair plane wreck. The Sea Tiger is the deepest recreational wreck that was sunk by Voyager Submarines. The YO-257 Ship was a navy refueling ship that was decommissioned and later bought by Voyager Submarines to sink it in the ocean for marine life habitat.

On a training exercise from Pearl Harbor in 1948, the Corsair plane developed a malfunction and was emergency landed into the sea, where it sank and now has become one of the most iconic wreck dive sites in the world.

Kirstin Downey: Honolulu Mayor Lobbies For More Federal Money For City's Homeless Problem

Rick Blangiardi was one of about 50 mayors to descend on Washington, D.C., this week.

Kirstin Downey

A Kailua girl, Kirstin Downey was a reporter for Civil Beat. A long-time reporter for The Washington Post , she is the author of “The Woman Behind the New Deal,” “Isabella the Warrior Queen” and an upcoming biography of King Kaumualii of Kauai. You can reach her by email at  [email protected] .

Editor’s note: Kirstin Downey, a longtime Civil Beat reporter, has transitioned to a new job as a regular columnist with a focus on Hawaii history and culture as well as local issues that are playing out in Washington, D.C., where she is finishing work on a new book about Kauai’s chief, King Kaumualii, who reigned in the early 1800s. For this column, she spent some time with Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, who was in the nation’s capital to meet with federal officials.

Confronting an intractable homelessness crisis, dozens of America’s mayors streamed into Washington, D.C., this week, seeking more and better help from lawmakers and officials in addressing it.

They are asking the federal government to develop a comprehensive national strategy to deal with homelessness.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, running for reelection in November, was among them, seeing the five-day visit as an opportunity to flag an issue that he called a source of persistent concern and unease to his constituents.

“We’re providing a voice, a primal scream, about the needs of our communities,” he said.

The trip was organized by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Blangiardi said in an interview in Washington this week. Los Angeles had  46,000 homeless  in 2023, up from 42,000 a year earlier, a 9.5% rise. Honolulu had  4,028 homeless  in 2023, up 2% from 2022.

Nationwide, some  653,000 people were homeless last year , up 12.1% from 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The rising cost of housing all over the country, compounded by high interest rates that make it harder for renters to transition into home ownership, are complicating everyone’s efforts, Blangiardi said.

Even middle-income people across the country are facing pressure from high housing costs, including in formerly  low-cost cities like Phoenix .

‘A Show of Force’

The 50 other mayors active on the homelessness task force include Sheng Tao of Oakland and Rex Richardson of Long Beach, Jacob Frey of Minneapolis, Andre Dickens of Atlanta, Wade Kapszukiewicz of Toledo, Ohio, Esther Manheimer of Asheville, N.C., John Whitmore of Houston, David Hoit of Oklahoma City, Paige Cognetti of Scranton, Pa., and Edward Gainey of Pittsburgh.

“We wanted to come here with a show of force,” Blangiardi said. “Municipalities big and small are dealing with a lack of affordable housing, the increase in homelessness and a lack of resources, especially to deal with mental illness.”

The mayors met with Tom Perez, a senior advisor to President Joe Biden, and officials at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and Health and Human Services. On Capitol Hill, they spoke with more than 20 lawmakers, including Democratic Rep. Rosa DeLauro, ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee, and Republican House Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise.

Blangiardi also met with Hawaii’s U.S. Sens. Brian Schatz and Mazie Hirono.

He said the mayors are first pushing for three specific things they think could help — more money for housing vouchers for individuals and projects that accept vouchers, but also for rule changes that will make it easier to provide assistance to veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

“We want to make sure if they are giving out money, Honolulu is not at the back of the line.” Mayor Rick Blangiardi

Housing vouchers are a government subsidy toward rent payments, with the renter paying the portion he or she is calculated to be able to afford each month and the federal government paying the rest. The program is intended to help elderly and disabled people and those with very low incomes obtain and retain affordable housing. They keep the poorest people from slipping into homelessness.

Honolulu has funding for 3,980 housing vouchers but Blangiardi hopes to secure 6,000 vouchers.

At least 15,000 households in Honolulu would qualify for housing vouchers if the money were available, Blangiardi said, based on statistics compiled through the city’s rent and utility relief program.

Supreme Court Ruling Looms

Blangiardi’s visit came just days after oral arguments were held in a U.S. Supreme Court case that may change the way some communities handle their homeless populations.

On April 22, the nine justices deliberated over a  contentious case involving Grants Pass , a small town in Oregon. The town had fined homeless people for sleeping in outdoor spaces. Advocates for the homeless sued and won, saying the city’s policy effectively made it a crime to be homeless.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had previously ruled that the Eighth Amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment prohibits placing criminal penalties on people who are homeless and do not have access to shelter.

Dozens of cities and counties, including many on the West Coast, have rallied behind Grants Pass officials, saying that courts have gone too far in preventing them from being able to regulate problematic behavior, and that that’s effectively tied their hands.

But many homeless advocates fear a new judicial ruling could lead to cities imposing penalties on people whose only crime is being poor.  Hundreds of people  rallied outside the Supreme Court building the day that the opposing lawyers made their presentations to the justices.

Hawaii has not taken an official stand on the case, according to Toni Schwartz, a spokeswoman for the Attorney General’s office.

“The Department will analyze the Supreme Court decision when it is released,” she said in an email.

‘We Want to Help Them’

The city has also intervened in the case. Blangiardi said that while he does not believe in “criminalizing homelessness,” he thinks that a judicial ruling more favorable to government action could be advantageous if it gave officials more flexibility.

“That’s what we are hoping for,” he said. “With people who can’t make a decision for themselves, we could take them in, treat them. There are people lying in the street. We want to help them.”

He said he would also like to be able to do more when elderly people are threatened by aggressive homeless people.

“People shouldn’t feel afraid,” he said.

He said the city is already taking many steps that he is hopeful are helping ameliorate the situation. About half the city’s 2023 homeless are now in shelters of some kind, he said, including most women with children.

In addition, the city has expanded its Crisis, Outreach, Response and Engagement program, in which specialized emergency teams address the medical and social needs of homeless people. It has 36 employees now,  up from 15 in 2021 . The city and state are working together to increase  the number of kauhale, or tiny house villages . And city officials are moving to secure more housing locations.

But more money from the federal government is essential, Blangiardi said. He said that the mayors were received cordially this week and given some reason for optimism that more funds may be forthcoming.

“They keep using the word ‘bipartisan,’” he said. “They say this is an issue they can work across the aisle on. We want to make sure if they are giving out money, Honolulu is not at the back of the line.”

Where's,all the allocated money that never seems to make a dent to begin with. Time for an audit!

Government should acquire vacant pineapple or cane fields and build a large homeless camp with job training to acquire skills of farming. Being located outside of the city will rid a lot of the problems that we have with the homeless. If they actually be gainfully employed, they can step up into the next tier of better accommodations or be promoted to luna of a plot of crop. No Free meals here!

Homelessness is fundamentally a local issue. The idea that the Federal government should provide money for the homeless to select cities is ridiculous, especially when policies in those cities contribute to the problem. The Federal government already provides money for a number of poverty programs (TANF, SNAP, WIC, Housing Support, Medicaid, etc.).
