WHY CHOOSE US?

Backstage Originals is the place where you can buy tee-shirts, hoodies, and branded wear that are actually authentic, licensed products, and not cheap imitations that shrink in the wash or fall apart after a week. You could look elsewhere online for cheaper products, but our prices reflect the work that goes into creating the iconic imagery, and we are about supporting the industry that we love. We charge a fair price so that everyone is looked after - from our staff right through to the bands themselves. You may be browsing the online shop right now, but Backstage Originals has its roots in bricks and mortar. We can be found in Notting Hill - the creative hotbed that’s been visited by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, The Clash, T-Rex, and many others.

Not For Sale, Archive Only

vintage ROLLING STONES KNEBWORTH 1976 TOUR T-Shirt concert

Original and extremely rare Stones Knebworth ’76 tee i got from someone who worked the concert. I was told that there were only a handful of these made and only for the band and crew for that one night (August 21st, 1976). Never seen another and most likely never will. Probably a collector’s piece rather than for wearing due to the fact that it is so TINY…see measurements!

David Bowie

Even in a decade of constant change for David Bowie , the years 1975 and 1976 were especially transformative. With hits like “Fame,” “Young Americans” and “Golden Years,” he’d achieved the American superstardom he’d long desired, embraced it and all of its excesses — and tired of it just as quickly. After his milestone  Station to Station album — a pioneering fusion of funk, rock and the European electronic music that was to dominate the three albums that followed — Bowie, in his “Thin White Duke” guise, embarked on the five-month-long “Isolar” tour of North America and Europe, after which he left Hollywood behind and relocated to Switzerland and Berlin, beginning yet another and dramatically different chapter of his life and career.

Andrew Kent was hired as Bowie’s photographer during this period, and his new book “Behind the Curtain” — in stores Nov. 15 in the U.S. and available from BowieBehindTheCurtain.com , with a forward from filmmaker and journalist Cameron Crowe, who was also along for the ride — captures the artist as he makes that transformation: From performing on “Soul Train” in Los Angeles to exploring Red Square in then-Communist Moscow just a few months later. In this selection from the book, we see Bowie onstage — in his thin, white, Gitane-smoking splendor – and off, wandering European capitals, partying with Iggy Pop and Ronnie Spector, relaxing with son Joey (aka Zowie) and soon-to-be-ex-wife Angela, applying makeup before a photo shoot, and, er, smoking in bed. It’s a strikingly intimate look at an artist during a galvanizing and challenging time, and serves as a visual companion to the recently released anthology Who Can I Be Now.

Passenger plane crashes near hours after repairs completed leaving three dead

Three people onboard a Russian Sukhoi Superjet 100 passenger jet died in a crash outside Moscow earlier today. The plane crashed three hours after repairs on the jet were completed

A Russian Sukhoi Superjet 100 passenger plane met a disatrous end today after it crashed in Russia on its first flight since repairs.

The crew of three were all killed on a flight without passengers as the aircraft went down near Moscow . The captain, Yevgeniy Bulavko, was reportedly killed along with co-pilot Maxim Lukmanov and flight attendant Vladislav Kharlamov some three hours after repairs on the jet had been completed.

Footage from before the crash shows the plane flying in the air steadily. Reports indicate the pilot issued a distress call and the aircraft circled to burn fuel ahead of an intended emergency landing. He is believed to have diverted the aircraft away from built up areas - the villages of the villages of Apraksino and Maloe Karasevo - areas and it crashed in a forest. The aircraft exploded on impact triggering a column of black smoke.

The crash came after the plane had taken off from Lukhovitsy airfield en route for Vnukovo, one of Moscow’s major air hubs. Some reports said it was on a test flight after repairs. Superjets are widely used in Russia, but have become vulnerable due to sanctions preventing the supply of Western parts. There have been several safety incidents during the period of the war against Ukraine when Western sanctions have been imposed.

Vladimir Putin is seeking to expand use of a new superjet based entirely on Russian-made parts. He does not use the planes himself. The stricken plane belonged to the Gazpromavia airline, serving the energy giant Gazprom. It disappeared from radar screens around 3pm Moscow time.

The reason for the crew’s mayday signal was not immediately disclosed. Earlier the aircraft - built in 2015 - had been used en route to Siberia. A criminal case has been opened regarding the plane crash in the Moscow region. This type of aircraft has been involved in two major crashes .

On 5 May 2019, 41 out of 78 people were killed after Sukhoi Superjet 100, was struck by lightning shortly after takeoff from Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport. The plane, suffering electrical failure, returned to the airport and bounced on the runway causing a fire . A long court case blamed the captain for the scale of the losses.

On 9 May 2012, a Sukhoi Superjet 100 crashed into Mount Salak in Indonesia during a promotional tour. All 45 people on board, including crew and prospective clients, died in the crash, which was also blamed on pilot error.

Modi's visit to Moscow and what it could mean for the world

SCOTT DETROW, HOST:

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is hugging Russian President Vladimir Putin tightly - literally. The two men embraced in front of cameras during a two-day visit of meetings that touched on defense and economic ties, among other topics. But perhaps more important than what was discussed was the context in which the visit took place. Just hours before Modi landed, Russian rockets struck cities across Ukraine, killing at least 36 people. And the talks occurred as Putin tries to show that Russia is not isolated on the world stage despite crippling sanctions. For more, we have called Daniel Markey. He's a senior adviser on South Asia for the United States Institute of Peace. Welcome to ALL THINGS CONSIDERED.

DANIEL MARKEY: Thanks, happy to be with you.

DETROW: What did you make of this visit?

MARKEY: Well, the timing wasn't great, certainly from Washington's perspective. You know, I'm sitting here in Washington, D.C. We have the NATO summit going on. And here's Narendra Modi, prime minister of India, someone who Washington has characterized as an increasingly close friend, in Moscow literally, as you said, hugging Vladimir Putin - in a way, endorsing a Russian position that Russia is not as isolated as Washington or its Western allies would like to believe, so problematic.

DETROW: President Biden, and like you said, all of the NATO leaders he is meeting with this week in D.C. have organized a big part of their strategies for the Ukraine War on making Russia isolated, on saying Russia is alone on the world stage - nobody stands with Russia. Does this visit show that that strategy just isn't working?

MARKEY: Well, it's always been problematic with India. From the start, India has been pretty clear that they intended to be, might say, opportunistic, certainly, in terms of their purchasing of oil from Russia, that they weren't going to let off. As the Indian government has been at pains to explain to Washington now for a couple of years, you know, India needs oil, India can't afford higher oil prices, India's economy needs to grow, and Russia is willing to sell at cut-rate prices. So Washington's had to deal with that reality from the start. I think, though, this was more symbolic in terms of its timing and will still come at something of kind of a shock here in Washington. It really sends ripples through the scenes here because, you know, seeing Modi do that now just looks even worse.

DETROW: What's the best way to describe how Modi and how other Indian leaders have approached the war in Ukraine?

MARKEY: They don't see it through the same lens as certainly the Biden administration has wanted to suggest. It's not a war between right and wrong, democracy and autocracy and so on. It's a European conflict with particular historical background to it, one that has a lot to do with Russia and formerly the Soviet Union and the rise of NATO, the growth of NATO. India doesn't see it as its conflict and wants to be clear that it would prefer to take a more neutral stance, that its relationship with Russia continues to be quite important and that that's not going to change.

DETROW: You mentioned that the U.S. is increasingly closely aligning with India on a lot of fronts, particularly when it comes to countering China. India is a key part of that for the U.S. and kind of setting up India and other countries aligned against China. Does the fact that Modi is defying the U.S. and portraying himself as so close to Russia - does that undermine those other efforts?

MARKEY: So far, Washington has had to basically accept that for exactly the reason that you suggest, which is that, you know, India continues to be important in the narrow context, or the other context, of strategic competition with China. And there, U.S. and Indian concerns are, not identical, but quite similar. So, so far, Washington has really had to accept that India could be a partner in one area if not in the other and has been working along, you know, with that assumption. And that's likely to hold, but this is just a harder pill to swallow.

DETROW: I want to end on that first image that I mentioned, that hug between the two of them. Even given all of the trends that you're talking about in recent years and the relationship between India and Russia, were you surprised to see these two leaders hug, especially during a week in which Russia brutally attacked cities across Ukraine?

MARKEY: I think many people in Washington will be surprised. People who follow Narendra Modi knows that he likes to hug world leaders, but the timing was terrible. And I do think that it's a reflection of the gap between how India sees the world, how Narendra Modi sees the world and India's place within it and where the United States sees India, or would like to see India, as an increasingly close partner. And so that hug has great weight to it.

DETROW: That's Dan Markey, senior adviser for South Asia at the United States Institute of Peace. Thank you so much.

MARKEY: Thank you. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
