Spring Tour

  • View history

The Spring Tour is the ninety-fourth tour of Mario Kart Tour, which began on April 19, 2023 and ends on May 2, 2023. Like the Metropolitan Tour , this tour features the first two routes for all of the European city courses ( Paris Promenade , London Loop , Berlin Byways , and Amsterdam Drift ) in addition to introducing a brand new city course set in Athens, Greece called Athens Dash, making this the first tour to introduce a new city to the game since the Bangkok Tour twenty-one tours prior. A battle course based on Paris Promenade, named Paris Promenade B, debuts in this tour as well, making this the first tour since the 2022 Autumn Tour twelve tours prior to introduce a battle course to the game. This is also the first tour to introduce a new city course and multiple routes for it simultaneously, as well as the first tour to debut a new city but not be named after the debuting city.

This is the first tour since the Animal Tour eleven tours prior to not reuse the name of an already-existing tour. Because of this, it is also the first tour of 2023 to not share its name with another tour.

A variant of Toad dressed as a tourist is also introduced in this tour. This tour also marks the first re-appearance of the first Berlin Byways route and the debut of its R/T variant. This tour also marks the first appearance of London Loop R/T since the 1st Anniversary Tour sixty-six tours prior.

Like the 2021 Sydney Tour and New Year's 2022 Tour , the tour's trailer was released later than the usual time.

The Spring Celebration event that began in the Ninja Tour (2023) ends in this tour.

History [ edit ]

Donkey kong series [ edit ], donkey kong jr. [ edit ].

In Donkey Kong Jr. , a Jump Board , [5] or spring board , [6] is prominently featured in the Jump Board Scene . Junior can use it to jump over a pit . As with most later games, the player can hit the jump button again with the right timing to perform a Super High Jump [5] (or Super Jump). [7] This can allow the Jump Board to be used as a shortcut to reach the hovering platform above it, or even the ledge to the upper-left. The Jump Board closely resembles the harmful jacks from the original Donkey Kong .

Donkey Kong (Game Boy) [ edit ]

Spring(compressed)

In Donkey Kong for the Game Boy , Jump Stands [8] appear. They are found throughout levels, and occasionally use varying designs. If Mario jumps on one, he can jump higher than usual. In addition, some Jump Stands can be placed through the use of square icons. When Mario jumps at a Jump Stand item, the game freezes and the player has to place the Jump Stand to any free point in the level. The Jump Stand is timed and disappears after the time has passed. This timer indicated with a music that starts playing as soon as the road is placed and gets faster gradually. The timer can be reset to 0 if Mario places another Jump Stand within the first Jump Stand's time limit, or any other placeable objects such as Roads , Ladders , and blocks. After disappearing, the Jump Stand can then be reactivated.

Super Mario series [ edit ]

Super mario bros. / super mario bros.: the lost levels [ edit ].

World C-3

Jumping boards [9] (also referred to as Jumpers [10] , Springs [11] , or Spring Blocks [12] ) first appear in the Super Mario series in Super Mario Bros. and return in its direct sequel, Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels . Upon pressing the jump button at the right time, Mario will jump with increased height.

In Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels , a green variety known as the Super Spring is introduced, which further increases Mario's jump height with a well-timed press of the jump button.

In Super Mario Bros. Deluxe , a smaller variant known as the Trampoline Floor [13] appears in the VS Game and You VS. Boo modes.

Jumping boards also appear in Super Mario Bros. Special . However, they are more difficult to activate due to their poor collision detection.

Super Mario World [ edit ]

Trampolines [14] [15] (originally known as Jumping Boards ) [16] appear in Super Mario World . This is the first game in which Mario and Luigi can carry a Trampoline, an ability that would later be carried on to future games, including the New Super Mario Bros. series .

Super Mario Sunshine [ edit ]

In Super Mario Sunshine , springboards appear in Noki Bay . When water touches them, they shrink and Mario is able to carry them around, allowing him to reach various high places.

Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 [ edit ]

Springboards appear in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 in two World-e levels: Ice Dungeon and Vexing Doors . They use the same sprite as in Super Mario World and can be carried in the same way.

New Super Mario Bros. series [ edit ]

NSMB Tram.png

Trampolines return in New Super Mario Bros. , New Super Mario Bros. Wii , New Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U , having the same function as they did in previous games.

Super Mario Galaxy [ edit ]

A Trampoline in Gold Leaf Galaxy

In Super Mario Galaxy , large, round, orange springboards with a Ground Pound symbol appear, which can bounce Mario extra high if he Ground Pounds on them. These cannot be carried around, unlike in previous games.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 [ edit ]

The orange springboards from Super Mario Galaxy return in Super Mario Galaxy 2 , having the same function as they did in that game. Additionally, a light-blue springboard appears in the game, which is square and marked with a pair of footprints, and can be used by simply jumping on it. Like the springboard it cannot be carried around. Three drums [17] in Cloudy Court Galaxy share the same function as these trampolines, but are suspended in the air. Ground-pounding a drum causes Mario to gain greater height.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury [ edit ]

Screenshot of Super Mario 3D World.

Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury features enemy springboards known as Hop-Chops . Hop-Chops often appear in groups where the player must find which is the 'correct' Hop-Chop that, rather than simply falling apart, will turn into a functional springboard upon defeat. When turned into a springboard, they function almost identically to their appearances in other Super Mario games: They can be carried with the run button, thrown, jumped on, and hitting them with a ground pound will cause the player to jump extra high. Springboards turn back into Hop-Chops after a short period of time if they are not attacked again.

A different type of trampoline, called a Jump Panel , also appears in certain levels, where it normally does not cause the player to bounce, but pressing the jump button will cause it to launch the player to distant heights.

Super Mario Maker series [ edit ]

Trampolines return in Super Mario Maker , Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS , and Super Mario Maker 2 , as items placed throughout the course. Mario and various objects such as Bill Blasters can bounce on them. They can be carried in all styles except Super Mario Bros. , as Mario cannot carry any objects in that style. Trampolines can be turned sideways in editing mode, making them able to bounce back objects that run into them. In this form, however, they cannot be carried in any style except by SMB2 Mario in the Super Mario Bros. style. The Trampoline also appears in the original Super Mario Maker as a costume .

Super Mario Run [ edit ]

spring tour mariowiki

Super Mario Run uses a new variation of Trampoline. This object is triggered when a player taps while their character runs across its surface. It launches the player upwards and, if held, the character will slowly spin downwards at a 45-degree angle. Players can use it to reach areas too high to be reached via normal jumps or take advantage of its slow descent to collect coins .

Club Nintendo [ edit ]

Trampoline

A spring plays an important role in the German Club Nintendo comic " Mario will hoch hinaus ." Trying to impress Princess Peach , Mario uses one which launches him extremely high into the air. Mario does not return to the ground for a long period of time.

Super Mario World television series [ edit ]

spring tour mariowiki

Jumping Boards appear in the Super Mario World television series in the episodes " The Wheel Thing " and " King Scoopa Koopa ". They appear to be made of stone, and their springy part is green instead of white and orange.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars [ edit ]

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars , two types of trampolines appear: warp trampolines make the player escape to the world map , and smile trampolines make the player exit the immediate area and enter a neighboring location. [18] In the Mole Mines , one smile trampoline is a trap with an unseen ceiling. When Mario uses it, he hits his head and falls unconscious, which is required to reveal Croco .

Paper Mario series [ edit ]

Paper mario [ edit ].

In Paper Mario , two types of jump pads appear. Red ones launch Mario straight up towards a set location, while blue ones retain the player's control over Mario's jump and are rarer.

The first blue jump pad Mario encounters is in the back area of Goomba Village , where it can be used to get a Fire Flower . On Goomba Road , the Red & Blue Goomba Bros. use a blue jump pad to descend from a ledge. After beating them, Mario can use it to continue to the Goomba King's Fortress . In the Toad Town sewers, a blue jump pad is used to reach the Power Smash badge . Two blue jump pad appear in the room where the Ultra Boots are found. Two more blue jump pads appear in Bowser's Castle . One of them must be uncovered using the nearby ! Switch .

At the west entrance to Toad Town , Mario can use his hammer to knock a red jump pad out of a tree and get the Hammer Throw badge. Two red jump pads are found at Mt. Rugged . One is used to reach a slide and the other is used to exit the pit that contains the letter to Goompapa . In the Dry Dry Ruins , a red jump pad is found next to the Super Block . A red jump pad is found in one of the rooms of Tubba Blubba's Castle and at the bottom of the Windy Mill . Red jump pads are used to enter and exit Shy Guy's Toy Box . One red jump pad appears in Yoshi's Village , where it is used to reach the Ravens . Three jump pads appear in the same large room inside Mt. Lavalava . Four jump pads appear throughout the Crystal Palace . A red jump pad is found within the cavernous room of Bowser's Castle.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door [ edit ]

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door , jump pads have been redesigned slightly, featuring four sets of yellow folding arms in a cross pattern with the platforms on the top and bottom now being identical. Only red jump pads are found, used to exit the Creepy Steeple 's well and to reach Doopliss ' room. Jumping off of one makes the same sound as heard when using a trampoline in Super Mario World .

Super Paper Mario [ edit ]

Paper Mario: Color Splash [ edit ]

In Paper Mario: Color Splash , a trampoline themed after its Super Mario Bros. appearance appears in the Green Energy Plant .

Wario World [ edit ]

An energy spring at the start of the Captain Skull battle in Wario World.

In Wario World , spring-like trampolines appear in every trapdoor course, giving Wario a means of escape. There are also a number of springboards outside of trapdoor rooms that boost Wario up and over walls and cliffs, taking the form of a rabbit. Additionally, a small ghostly pair of springs appear in Captain Skull's Showdown .

Mario & Luigi series [ edit ]

Mario & luigi: superstar saga / mario & luigi: superstar saga + bowser's minions [ edit ].

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions , trampolines called Spring Pads [19] appear. They can be used to jump over walls or hedges.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time [ edit ]

spring tour mariowiki

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time , Trampolines are powerful Bros. Items that require the availability of all four Bros. Each Bro. jumps onto the Trampoline and stomp on the foe in a random order. If timed correctly, they jump back onto the Trampoline. If timed poorly, they will knock the Trampoline away, until all four Bros. fall. It functions similarly to the Cannonballer , except attacks can be landed indefinitely. Differently designed Trampolines can also be found in the overworld, though only the babies can use them, as the adult brothers are too heavy to use them.

Small yellow trampolines appear as overworld objects, found in areas such as the Shroob Mother Ship , Yoshi's Island , and Yoob's Belly . If the adult Bros. step on them, the trampoline releases air and deflates. If the baby Bros. step on it, it launches them high up into a different area.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong series [ edit ]

A Button

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem! replaces these springs with Long Springs , which function like Blue Springs, and High Springs , which function like Yellow Springs. These springs are resource objects which can be picked up and placed in different locations. Both of these springs reappear in Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars , while Long Springs also reappear in Mini Mario & Friends: amiibo Challenge .

Super Princess Peach [ edit ]

Springboards appear in two colors in Super Princess Peach : green springboards are fixed in place, and orange springboards can be picked up with Perry , moved via Poundbrella , or bounced off of Princess Peach 's body by touching the side. Additionally, green springboards come in two sizes: normal or giant, which has a slightly longer charge time and allows the player to reach greater heights.

Super Smash Bros. series [ edit ]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl , Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS , and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U , the spring from Donkey Kong Jr. appears as a regular item. If jumped on, a player will be launched in the air much higher than with a normal jump. If the spring is knocked on its side, however, the player will be launched sideways. A different kind of springboard also appears as a stage element throughout the Super Smash Bros. series , including The Subspace Emissary and Smash Run .

Wario Land: Shake It! [ edit ]

Mario party: island tour [ edit ].

Yoshi jumping on a Springboard in Star-Crossed Skyway in Mario Party: Island Tour

In Mario Party: Island Tour , a springboard briefly appears on the Star-Crossed Skyway board, where the player jumps onto it to launch themselves to the fourth area of the board after the third Star Stage.

Spring tours of North Carolina Cooperative Extension’s  Pollinator Paradise Demonstration Garden  in Pittsboro start on May 11!

The garden features over 2 2 5 species of perennials, trees, shrubs, vines, and grasses, and 85% of them are native to North Carolina.  This is a great opportunity to visit the popular gathering spot for honey bees, native bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and beneficial insects in addition to their human admirers! The tours are led by Chatham County Agriculture Agent Debbie Roos.

There is no charge for the tour but  registration is required  to limit group size. The tours fill up very quickly so don’t delay in registering if you really want to attend.

Visit the Pollinator Garden Tour web page  for a listing of tour dates and times and links to register. I have posted several dates for spring tours and will later post additional dates for summer and fall.

I look forward to seeing you at the garden!

NEW YORK (AP) — Heart — the pioneering band that melds Nancy Wilson’s shredding guitar with her sister Ann’s powerhouse vocals — is hitting the road this spring and fall for a world tour that Nancy Wilson describes as “the full-on rocker size.”

“I’ve been strengthening. I’ve got my trainer,” she says. “You go one day at a time and you strengthen one workout session at a time. It’s a lot of work, but it’s the only job I know how to do.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers who gave us classic tracks like “Magic Man,” “Crazy on You” and “Alone” will be playing all the hits, some tracks from of their solo albums — like Ann Wilson’s “Miss One and Only” and Nancy Wilson’s “Love Mistake” — and a new song called “Roll the Dice.”

“I like to say we have really good problems because the problem we have is to choose between a bunch of different, really cool songs that people love already,” says Nancy Wilson.

Like “Barracuda,” a sonic burst which first appeared on the band’s second album, “Little Queen” and is one of the band’s most memorable songs.

“You can’t mess with ‘Barracuda.’ It’s just the way it is. It is great. You get on the horse and you ride. It’s a galloping steed of a ride to go on. And for everybody, including the band.”

The tour kicks off Saturday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, and will hit cities including Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Detroit, as well as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. International dates include stops in London, Oslo, Berlin, Stockholm, Montreal and Glasgow.

The band’s Royal Flush Tour will have Cheap Trick as the opening act for many stops, but Def Leppard and Journey will join for three stadium dates in Cleveland, Toronto and Boston this summer.

Ann and Nancy Wilson will be filled out by Ryan Wariner (lead and rhythm guitar), Ryan Waters (guitars), Paul Moak (guitars, keyboards and backing vocals), Tony Lucido (bass and backing vocals) and Sean T. Lane (drums).

The tour is the first in several years for Heart, which was rocked by a body blow in 2016 when Ann Wilson’s husband was arrested for assaulting Nancy’s 16-year-old twin sons. Nancy Wilson says that’s all in the past.

“We can take any kind of turbulence, me and Ann, and we’ve always been OK together,” she says. “We’re still steering the ship and happy to do it together. So we’re tight.”

The new tour will take them to Canada, which was warm to the band when they were starting out as what Nancy Wilson calls “a couple of chicks from Seattle.” She recalls Vancouver embracing Heart, and touring in one van across Canada in the dead of winter on two lane highways.

The Wilson sisters broke rock’s glass ceiling in the ‘70s and Nancy Wilson says they only had male influences to look to, like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Moody Blues.

Now she says she looks out and loves seeing generations of female rockers. “You have boygenius and you have Billie Eilish and you have Olivia Rodrigo and so many amazing women — Maggie Rogers and Sheryl Crow, who calls us her big influence. And then Billie Eilish might have Sheryl Crow as her influence. So it’s a really nice legacy to pass along. I like to say we’re the OG — the original gangsters — of women and rock.”

Heart has made it into the Rock Hall, won Grammys, sold millions of albums and rocked hundreds of thousands of fans but Nancy Wilson has one place she’d still like to shine.

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of their debut album, “Dreamboat Annie,” which was the same year that “Saturday Night Live” started. “So we’re actually kind of putting it out there — Heart never played on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ But what about the 50th birthday party with Heart?”

2024 RBC Heritage leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler nears fourth win in five starts with event to finish Monday

Weather prevented the final round from completing, but scheffler is well on his way to continuing his hot streak.

Scottie Scheffler's fourth victory in his last five tournaments will have to wait one more day. With the 2024 RBC Heritage experiencing more than a 2.5-hour weather delay Sunday, tournament action was unable to be completed before nightfall; it will instead leak into the work week. The final round at Harbour Town Golf Links will resume Monday at 8 a.m. ET with Scheffler holding a five-stroke lead at 20 under.

The world No. 1 is well clear of his nearest pursuer, Wyndham Clark, with three holes left in his tournament. Clark, meanwhile, is in the clubhouse at 15 under hoping for another runner-up check behind Scheffler. Others on the golf course like J.T. Poston, Patrick Cantlay and Sahith Theegala stand at that same number with holes to play.

Monday morning may only be a formality as Scheffler looks to be in control of just about everything -- like he has been the last two months.

Scheffler began Sunday in Hilton Head Island with one arm already slipped in the tartan jacket. Possessing a one-stroke lead, the Texan was crowned by many late Saturday evening despite the bevy of stars who had plans to upend him.

After knocking in a 6-foot par save on the 1st, Scheffler more or less turned those predictions into a reality. Chipping in for eagle on the par-5 2nd from long of the green (his 11th hole-out from off the green this season), Scheffler opened a three-stroke lead on the field and never looked back.

Charges were made by many, including a familiar foe in Clark, but none were that threatening. The reigning U.S. Open champion turned in 7-under 29 and tacked on another birdie on the 11th to get within one of Scheffler, but the pressure of perfection proved too much.

Hitting a tree with his second shot on No. 12, Clark's ball ricocheted out of bounds and led to a double bogey. Another dropped shot came on the following hole and all but secured another near miss from the U.S. Open champion.

Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Åberg, Cantlay and Theegala all hovered on the first page of the leaderboard but never truly threatened. Instead, it was Patrick Rodgers who emerged as Scheffler's greatest threat thanks to an eagle-2 at the turn. A bogey a few holes later put an end to his Cinderella story.

Remaining in the wake of mistakes was a spotless Scheffler at 19 under, four ahead of the field. Turning in 3 under, the steadiest man in the game marched forward with a heavy diet of fairways and greens before a spell of thunderstorms halted his momentum on the par-4 12th.

Inclement weather was all that could stop Scheffler as the 27-year-old returned to the golf course more than two hours later and resumed his round without a hitch. While temperatures cooled and winds freshened, Scheffler was unaffected.

He picked off a birdie on the 13th to push his lead to five before a mud ball on the 15th led to his second finding the water on the par 5. It didn't matter as Scheffler launched a pitching wedge onto the surface, spinning it left and utilizing the slope to access the tucked pin. He avoided what would have been his first dropped shot since the 3rd hole on Thursday with an emphatic par save, and he will sleep easy Sunday night knowing five strokes separate him from the field and three holes separate him from victory.

Rick Gehman, Kyle Porter, Patrick McDonald and Greg DuCharme discuss Scottie Scheffler's hold on the RBC Heritage, Nelly Korda's fifth straight victory and Miles Russell finishing top 25 as a 15 year old. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

Play called for evening

The final group is on the green on the par-5 15th meaning they will have three holes to play on Monday. Scottie Scheffler faces a par putt from 10 feet to maintain his five-stroke lead as he stands at 20 under.

Five clear with five to go!

The only thing that can stop him is the sunlight at this rate. Scottie Scheffler adds a birdie on 13 to get to 20 under and five clear of the crew at 15 under. Without the world No. 1 this tournament would be very, very good, but alas they are all fighting for first flight honors it appears.

Conditions are considerably harder for these guys. The wind has switched, it's about 10 degrees cooler and they are racing against the clock. Scottie Scheffler and Sepp Straka make par on No. 12 and head to the par-4 13th. Wyndham Clark posts the clubhouse lead at 15 under, four behind Scheffler.

Let's play ball!

Players are on the golf course and play is set to resume. Scottie Scheffler in the final pairing has about 7.5 holes remaining and one hour until sunset meaning this thing is probably going to leak into Monday unfortunately.

Play to resume at 7 p.m.

Coverage information, play to resume at 6 p.m. et.

The expectation is this thing will be finished today as the range is open and play is set to resume in 40 minutes at 6 p.m. ET. This will leave Scottie Scheffler a couple hours to complete just about seven holes as he left off in the middle of the 12th fairway with a four-stroke lead at 19 under.

Play suspended due to weather

The horn has sounded at 4:28 p.m. ET as a large weather system (with lightning) has engulfed Harbour Town. This comes as Scottie Scheffler stands in the 12th fairway with a four-stroke lead at 19 under over a number of pursuers up ahead of him on the golf course. Players are being brought back into the clubhouse as rules officials make an assessment on when play will return.

Rain comin' down hard

Scheffler turns in 33 with three-stroke lead.

Scheffler lets a chance slide by on the short ninth and will instead settle for a 3-under 33 on his front nine. It was highlighted by his eagle-3 on the par-5 2nd and Scheffler will head to the back side with a three-stroke edge.

Theegala thriving

Theegala cards four 3s in a row to end his front nine and get within four of Scottie Scheffler. Sahith spoke yesterday about how cool it is what Scheffler is currently doing and how it is a motivating factor for someone like him to get better. It's a great perspective and Theegala continues to get better and better, but it may not be enough this week as he is four behind with nine to go.

Spring in the Blue Hills: Beavers, skunk cabbage and spicebush. What you can see, smell

spring tour mariowiki

QUINCY − Every so often the city's monthly Environmental Treasures program has a daytime walk on a Friday, popular with seniors and retirees. Last week's adventure showed how easy it can be to get away from it all in the Blue Hills.

The walk, called Signs of Spring, was led by volunteer Maura O'Gara, a Quincy resident who teaches in a cooperative nature school at Moose Hill Farm in Sharon. She works for the Trustees of Reservations in that role and on her days off, she brings a naturalist's curiosity and knowledge to the Quincy environmental walks, explaining things clearly in a fun way.

A dozen of us met in the parking area of Shea Memorial Skating Rink, at 651 Willard St. by the entrance to the Blue Hills Reservation St. Moritz loop trail.

'An exciting change' in the Blue Hills

Within two minutes, we had left the sounds of traffic behind, quietly following a pathway through the woods, coming to the St. Moritz Pond Loop.

"I brought you up here for a couple of reasons," Maura said. The first was to point out the fuzzy yellow nubs, or flowers, on the male pussy willows, one of the earliest flowering shrubs.

"They are a great source for early pollinators looking for nectar. You might see different insects on the flowers, interested in a good meal after the winter."

The other reason was "an exciting change" in the Blue Hills: beavers have found a new home on the far side of St. Moritz Pond.

At this time last year, Maura and her husband, Michael Pratt, were walking around the pond when they discovered a beaver lodge. On Friday, we looked across the pond and spotted it, a mound of mud and sticks.

'Unfurling in a great glory of green'

Further along, we came to a sunny area of Furnace Brook and colonies of skunk cabbage with wide green leaves. Just a few weeks ago, these leaves had started out as small spikes poking through the mud "and unfurled into this great glory of green," Maura said.

We had already been invited to close our eyes and listen to the running water, "another sign of spring." Now it was time for an "olfactory joy" experience.

Maura carefully pulled part of a leaf off a skunk cabbage plant and passed the leaf around so we could smell the aroma. The odor is attractive to insects, but most of the walkers quickly made faces of distaste. To many people, skunk cabbage smells like a skunk, or rotting, putrid meat, although some compare it to the smell of cabbage or mustard.

Next, an antidote: there was a yellow flowering spicebush by the trail. Maura scraped a few branches to release the gingery aroma and passed the twigs around. This time, smiles.

And now for some homemade maple syrup

The tour had been advertised as an opportunity to celebrate Earth Day early by exploring the "sights, sounds, smells, taste, and feel (including mud and wet trails) of spring."

True to form, at the last stop by a sugar maple tree along the brook, Maura pulled out some homemade maple syrup and invited everyone to dip popsicle sticks into the syrup for a taste. She and the children at her school had tapped local maple trees and boiled the sap to make the maple syrup.

On Sunday, Sally Owen, who founded and also leads the Environmental Treasures program, led the walk a second time.

The story of one of the nation's first female surgeons

The Milton Senior Center recently offered a fascinating program about one of the nation's first female surgeons, Susan Dimock, who practiced in Boston in the 19th century.

Susan Wilson, of Waltham, a historian, photographer and author, presented an informative and entertaining slide show and talk about her new book, "Women and Children First. The Trailblazing Life of Susan Dimock, M.D." published by McFarland Books.

In the 1870s, Susan Dimock became well-known as a strong advocate for women and an innovator in American medicine. She was one of the first group of female physicians to provide professional health care to women and became well-known as a pioneering surgeon at the New England Hospital for Women and Children in Roxbury. She also founded America’s first professional nursing school.

Living proof a woman could be competent, smart, lovely and kind

Raised in North Carolina, she was determined to become a physician from a young age, supported in that goal by her father and studied medicine at the University of Zurich before settling in Boston.

"In the 1870s, she was arguably the best-educated, most-skilled woman surgeon in the nation as well as living proof that a woman could be competent, smart, lovely, and kind – all in the same package," Wilson said.

She described how Dimock executed complex surgeries, and trained America's first professional nurses, ultimately inspiring a new generation of female surgeons. A prestigious Viennese medical professor, when asked for advice to aspiring young doctors, replied, "Make yourself to be like Miss Dimock."

An amazing life that ended tragically way too soon

The biography has been described as the first to give Susan Dimock her rightful place in history. Sadly, she died in a shipwreck in the Celtic Sea at age 28, while on vacation taking a break from her arduous schedule. She is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain, where Wilson formed a group that replaced Dr. Dimock's decaying headstone there in 1995 (that story is near the end of the new book),

The Milton audience, which included several retired nurses, responded to Wilson's presentation throughout. When the talk ended, a man asked if Dimock had ever married. She did not, Wilson said, adding that in that era, it would have been impossible to have married and still have pursued her career.

The book is widely available online.

If you want to learn more, WCVB Channel 5's Chronicle program has this 5-minute video about Dimock on its website .

You can see Wilson's hour-long talk , which she also gave in March at the Massachusetts State Library at the State House, on the library's YouTube Channel.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

spring tour mariowiki

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.

This is grassroots travel at its most interesting

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
