Early mornings and evenings provide the best chances to spot majestic wildlife, including rhinos, elephants, lions, and leopards. Discover South African Wine Country

A stop in Cape Town opens the door to South Africa's famed wine region, Stellenbosch. This sprawling vineyard landscape, known for its cabernet and merlot blends, syrah, and chenin blanc, offers an immersive exploration into the world of winemaking. Book a Stellenbosch excursion to visit one of the region's top winemaking estates, where you'll learn about the intricate process behind each bottle.

Go Birdwatching in Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay, a paradise for bird enthusiasts, is home to more than 150 different bird species. A shore excursion to the tranquil Walvis Bay Lagoon allows travellers to see rare species like the Damara tern or the intriguing phalaropes and grebes. Don't forget to visit Pelican Point, a bustling colony of Cape fur seals.

Richard Bay Harbour, South Africa

Norwegian's 2024 Africa cruises will sail from either Cape Town, South Africa, or Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Depending on your chosen itinerary, your voyage may circle back to Cape Town or disembark in Dubai or Port Louis, Mauritius. If you opt for a Mediterranean and Middle East cruise with a stop in Egypt, your cruise typically commences in Dubai.

Unforgettable Stops on an Africa Cruise

In 2024, Norwegian promises to whisk you away to some of Africa's most captivating destinations. Here are the potential ports of call to mark on your map:

  • Cape Town, South Africa.
  • Mossel Bay, South Africa.
  • Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), South Africa.
  • Richards Bay, South Africa.
  • Durban, South Africa.
  • Luderitz, Namibia.
  • Walvis Bay, Namibia.
  • Maputo, Mozambique.
  • Nosy Be, Madagascar.
  • Port Victoria, Seychelles.
  • La Digue, Seychelles.
  • Pointe Des Galets, Reunion.
  • Safaga, Egypt.

Black Lemurs in Madagascar

Meet Madagascar's Lemurs

Madagascar's Lokobe Natural Reserve is a treasure trove of biodiversity. A guided excursion here offers opportunities to see endemic species like black lemurs. Interestingly, males are entirely black, whilst females boast rust-coloured coats and white ear tufts. Keep an eye out for pygmy kingfishers, snakes, panther chameleons, and leaf-tailed geckos in this lush habitat.

Spot African Penguins

In Port Elizabeth, the Penguin Island Cruise excursion is a standout experience. You'll journey to the world's largest colony of African penguins in their natural habitat. If you're lucky, you might also catch a glimpse of playful humpback and bottle-nose dolphins.

Piton de la Fournaise, La Reunion

Scale an Active Volcano

For the adventurous cruiser, Pointe des Galets on Reunion Island offers the chance to climb an active volcano. Piton de la Fournaise rises over 8,600 feet. Once you complete the challenging climb, you're rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. The viewpoint at Pas de Bellecombe is perched atop a 492-foot cliff.

Visit the Island of War

Mombasa is a vibrant port city with a tumultuous past, which is why it earned the nickname the Island of War. Here, you'll experience African, Indian, and Arab cultures in one place. Fort Jesus is one of Mombasa's notable sites. It was built by the Portuguese in 1593. In less than 200 years, the fort changed hands nine times. Be sure to try some local cuisine to experience the blend of cultures here.

Anse Patates Beach, La Digue, Seychelles

Relax on Seychelles' Beaches

The Seychelles are a beach-lover's dream, with stunning white sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, and intriguing granite boulders. Here, you can lounge under the sun, snorkel in the vibrant coral reefs, or embark on an island-hopping adventure.

Unearth Ancient Egypt

On a Mediterranean and Middle East cruise, a stop in Safaga, Egypt, offers a chance to step back in time. Consider an overnight excursion to Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, which brings you face-to-face with ancient Egyptian civilization's grandeur. This excursion includes an evening visit to see the light and sound show at the Karnak Temple.

The best Africa cruises for 2025 and 2026

Melissa Klurman

Nothing quite says "bucket list" like a cruise to Africa.

You get wildlife safaris, ancient wonders of the world and some of the most fascinating cultural epicenters on the globe all in one trip. Are you starting to understand why a cruise here is so unique?

Africa is a big continent, and you'll find almost as many ways to cruise as marvels to see. Whether you want to visit Africa's tropical Seychelles islands in the Indian Ocean or prefer the dramatic red sands of Namibia on the Atlantic coast, you can do it on a cruise ship — even on the same itinerary.

And that's not all! You can book intimate river cruises on Botswana's Chobe River or Egypt's Nile River, a rite of passage for many a cruise fan. (We've highlighted Viking below for its vast number of sailings, but Lindblad/National Geographic, Uniworld and Avalon Waterways all offer Nile itineraries as well.)

Whether you're looking for an expedited South African highlights cruise or a multiweek African continent adventure, you can find a cruise itinerary to suit you. Here are our picks for the best Africa cruises in 2025 and 2026.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 11- to 13-night South Africa & Madagascar cruises

south africa to madagascar cruise

Norwegian Cruise Line has some of the most robust and varied Africa cruise options of all the big-ship lines, with 13 sailings ranging from 11 to 21 nights in 2025 alone.

Among the most popular offerings is the Cape Town to Mauritius (or reverse) route on Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Dawn. These 11- to 13-night cruises combine the highlights of Cape Town with the wildlife wonders of Madagascar. The latter is one of the most enthralling safari destinations in Africa; 90% of the plant and animal species on the island are endemic, including 103 varieties of lemurs. But Madagascar is also a destination that even hardcore safari enthusiasts often skip because flights and lodges are hard to book, making a cruise the perfect way to get there.

NCL's itineraries also visit Pointe de Galets, Reunion — a lush beach and rainforest area on the Indian Ocean. Norwegian Dawn's 12-night itinerary adds a stop in Maputo, Mozambique.

Who should go : The 1,944-passenger Norwegian Sky and 2,290-passenger Norwegian Dawn are some of the smallest and oldest ships in Norwegian Cruise Line's fleet. They suit cruisers looking for a more intimate experience than what you'll find on bigger ships. Africa cruises tend to draw cruisers who care more about the destinations they visit than onboard attractions, but the ships will still entertain you with multiple eateries and bars and lounges, several pools and whirlpools, a casino and a theater with nightly shows.

Azamara: 18-night Western Africa Voyage

south africa to madagascar cruise

Azamara offers an 18-night Western Africa Voyage sailing between the Canary Islands and Cape Town. The 704-passenger Azamara Quest calls on the ports of Dakar, Senegal; Banjul, Gambia; and Luderitz and Walvis Bay, Namibia, along the African coast. The ship also stops at the British-controlled island of St. Helena.

Book excursions to seek out the elusive wild horses of Namibia, take a sightseeing flight over the massive shifting sand dunes of Sossusvlei, race through the desert in a four-wheel-drive vehicle and explore the waterways and villages of Gambia.

Azamara also partners with Micato Safaris for pre- and post-cruise Africa programs to see the "Big Five" (Cape buffaloes, lions, rhinoceroses, elephants and leopards). You can book safaris in Chobe National Park in Botswana or Kruger National Park in South Africa.

Who should go : Azamara caters to affluent, well-traveled cruisers who enjoy smaller vessels, a country house ambience and itineraries that focus on destination immersion. (You won't find waterslides or roller coasters, and that's exactly how the line's fans like it.) Azamara creates an immersive African experience with its focus on longer stays in port; for example, the ship spends two full days in Walvis Bay, Namibia. Additionally, the line's complimentary AzAmazing Evenings program takes cruisers ashore to experience cultural performances in jaw-dropping locations, such as the "Desert Dinner & Fire spinners and Marimba Band" event in Namibia.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises: 16-night Shores of Madagascar: Cape Town to Port Louis cruises

south africa to madagascar cruise

Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers a 16-night itinerary along the southern coast of South Africa and on to Mozambique and Madagascar, concluding in Port Louis, Mauritius. The 750-passenger Seven Seas Splendor departs Jan. 27, 2026, on this itinerary and then repeats the sailing in reverse, from Port Louis to Cape Town, on Feb. 12, 2026.

Along the way, Regent offers some unique shore excursions that set it apart from other lines. Highlights include safari game drives in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, from Richards Bay; cultural explorations of Durban, South Africa, with visits to Zulu villages in the Valley of a Thousand Hills; and birding in the remote Mayotte, French Comoros.

Who should go : Regent's all-inclusive luxury cruises — which include airfare, transfers, onboard beverages and dining, gratuities, Wi-Fi and unlimited shore excursions — have correspondingly luxurious prices. Passengers are mostly affluent professionals and retirees who enjoy the seamless ease of an all-inclusive sailing offering high-end service.

Fine dining fans will appreciate the multiple onboard dining options, including Chartreuse for fine French cuisine and Prime 7 with steakhouse menus. Other diversions on board include the sybaritic Serene Spa and a pool deck, plus boccie, a putting green and golf nets for sea day enrichment.

Oceania Cruises: 14-night Cape Town to Cape Town cruise

south africa to madagascar cruise

If you'd prefer a deeper exploration of southern Africa, Oceania Cruises' Cape Town to Cape Town cruise Jan. 19. to Feb. 2, 2026, explores South Africa's coast in an unusual up-and-back itinerary, first exploring the east coast up to Richards Bay, then heading to the island of Madagascar, then looping back to the mainland and stopping in Maputo, Mozambique, before returning back to Cape Town.

Highlights include Durban, with its golden beaches and enchanting Indian Market, and Port Elizabeth on the southern coast of South Africa, an area nicknamed the "Garden Route" for its verdant foliage. Port Elizabeth is also a popular migratory path for southern right whales that you might spot, along with schools of dolphins, as you sail.

Oceania offers longer Cape Town to Lisbon, Portugal, and Cape Town to Barcelona itineraries (as well as Lisbon and Barcelona to Cape Town sailings) of 25 and 26 nights, too. Ports include the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, the Ivory Coast and Ghana. Along the way, you'll stop at Walvis Bay on the western coast of Namibia, with its iconic red sand dunes; here, you'll have a chance to see flamingos, pelicans and thousands of other migratory birds.

Who should go : Oceania Cruises offers a high-end cruising experience with a residential feel similar to staying in an elegant estate. The intimate 670-passenger Nautica features a relatively uncrowded setting, with a higher crew-to-passenger ratio than you'll find on mass-market vessels. On board, guests delight in several high-end restaurants offering gourmet cuisine and elegant accommodations.

Viking: 11-night Pharaohs and Pyramids cruise

south africa to madagascar cruise

Not all Africa cruises are on the ocean. A trip down the Nile River is a tick on many a traveler's wish list, and Viking offers one of the easiest-to-book options with seven ships sailing its Pharaohs & Pyramids cruises . In 2025 and 2026, sailings depart nearly every day in the October to March high season, though no sailings are scheduled for the second half of June through the end of July.

The round-trip Cairo sailings feel incredibly exclusive, with ships carrying just 82 passengers on board. The itinerary begins with several days in Cairo, where guests can visit the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx, museums and souks before sailing down the Nile. Your ship will linger multiple days in Luxor, Egypt, home of the Valley of the Kings; spend a day in Qena, Egypt, to see the Dendera Temple complex; and stop in the ports of Esna, Aswan, Kom Ombo and Edfu, Egypt.

Who should go : Adults-only cruise line Viking appeals to travelers who appreciate a relaxed onboard experience centered around learning about a destination via guest lectures — in this case, Egyptologists — and shore excursions. The cruise line's passengers tend to be retirement age or older.

Viking's fans love the ships' uncluttered Scandinavian-inspired decor and pricing that includes wine and beer with lunch and dinner, gratuities and one free shore excursion per port. The ships do not have an onboard casino or entertainment spaces beyond the main lounge area, but a shaded pool and sundeck offer a relaxing outdoor venue to watch the river scenery.

AmaWaterways: 9-night Discover Africa cruisetour

south africa to madagascar cruise

If you're someone who loves the equivalent of a travel buffet and appreciates having a little bit of every experience on your plate, then AmaWaterways ' incredibly unique Discover Africa cruisetour itinerary is for you. (AmaWaterways also offers Nile cruises.) For this journey, guests start with two full days of guided tours and three nights in a luxury hotel in Cape Town before flying to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and transferring to the Chobe River where you embark on the 28-passenger Zambezi Queen for a four-night cruise traversing the wildlife areas of Botswana, including safari drives into the savannah.

Then, it's back to Victoria Falls to see the thundering waterfall and explore the area by both steam train and smaller sailing vessel during your two-night stay. The adventure ends with a flight to Johannesburg, where you can continue your adventure independently or with a post-cruise extension or fly home.

Who should go : AmaWaterways attracts active guests who appreciate the multiple included excursion options at every port and the line's attention to both wellness and exceptional culinary offerings. The river cruise line's Africa sailings use a chartered ship, so you won't find its signature Wellness Host leading fitness classes or cuisine vetted by the prestigious culinary organization La Chaine des Rotisseurs. However, Zambezi Queen offers unique activities like fishing and bird-watching, as well as dining that AmaWaterways calls "five-star home-cooked cuisine." A local mother and son duo from a nearby village prepare all the meals for an authentic taste of the region.

Zambezi Queen also has a plunge pool on the sundeck, so you can soak up the African views while you take a dip. All rooms have balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows, so you're never far from a safari view.

Madagascar Baobabs & Beyond

11 days | discover the diverse landscapes of africa’s remote eco-paradise..

south africa to madagascar cruise

Venture into the far reaches of Madagascar on this 11-day journey that reveals the diverse landscapes of one of the most spellbinding countries on the African continent. From the emerald-green crater lakes of the Antsirabe district, to the golden hues of sunset in the Avenue of the Baobabs, experience Madagascar’s rainbow terrain as you leave behind the bustle of Antananarivo and traverse remote paths and waterways into the wild. Experience life along the Tsiribihina Delta on a two-day cruise, see the legendary tombs of the Vazimba people while exploring caves, float down the Manambolo River in a dugout canoe and feel the suspense as you peer down into the vast canyon of the Great Tsingy.

Trip overview

  • Witness a spectacular pink and yellow sunset behind towering, 800-year-old trees along the Avenue of the Baobabs in the laid-back seaside town of Morondava.
  • Travel along the Tsiribihina River in a traditional barge, stopping to hike to hidden waterfalls, explore remote villages and camp among nature on the banks.
  • Trek through a forest of limestone karsts and cross a sheer drop on a suspended bridge at the Great Tsingy, keeping an eye out for native wildlife including 11 species of lemur.
  • Float down the meandering Manambolo River in a traditional dugout canoe, wind through a deep gorge and past rocky cliffs, soaking up the tranquil atmosphere.
  • Discover the emerald-green waters of Tritiva, an extinct crater surrounded by verdant forest, on a hike through the stunning Antsirabe district.
  • The visible vertical drop at the Great Tsingy is an incredible sight, however it can be quite intimidating especially for those with vertigo. If you have concerns, please discuss these with your leader once the trip commences.
  • Some of the best scenery in Madagascar is found on hikes. So, while this trip doesn't require a high level of fitness, it’s essential to be at least moderately fit if you want to partake in all activities.
  • This trip includes river cruising on the Tsiribihina River. Camping conditions are basic along the way and there will be no access to bathroom facilities, however this means you have access to more remote parts of the region and the joy of experiencing the elements.
  • As this is a remote part of Madagascar there will be some very long travel days, but we think the unique and rewarding experiences are worth the distances travelled. Due to the conditions of the roads and the impact of little maintenance during the pandemic travel can be slow so a little patience can go a long way.

View the itinerary for departures between 01 January 2024 - 31 December 2024

Tonga soa! Bienvenue! Welcome to Antananarivo, Madagascar's crowded but charming capital. Your adventure officially begins with a welcome meeting at 5 pm. If you decide to arrive early, take some time to get acquainted with the city. With cobbled streets, wooden houses and impressive churches, ‘Tana’ has a distinctly romantic air. Perhaps wander the streets of Haute-Ville or visit the permanent Analakely street market. After your welcome meeting this evening, you might like to head out with your new friends for dinner in one of Antananarivo high-quality restaurants.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

There will be no access to banks or cash points from Miandrivazo to Morondava. Meals on your river excursion are included, however drinks and gratuities for your river crew are not. Meals in Bekopaka are at your own expense. We would suggest 160 -180 Euro for meals and services not included in your tour price for this section of the trip. Please ask your Tour Leader for further advice.

Be prepared for a long drive as you begin the journey west this morning. Maybe kick back with a book or get to know your fellow travellers during the to Miandrivazo, a small city that will act as the starting point for your adventure down the Tsiribihina River. On arrival, check in to the hotel and listen to a briefing on essential information for your two-day cruise. Head out to pick any extra supplies you may need or desire for the next few days, then get some rest in preparation for tomorrow.

Your travel today will be approximately 11 hours, not including stops.

Restroom facilities may not always be accessible. In such instances, you may need to resort to nature's restroom, locally referred to as a 'bushy-bushy.' We suggest carrying a sleeping bag (a basic blanket is provided) or a sleep sheet for your river camping experience, a towel and a waterproof jacket. Sunscreen, insect repellent and hat are highly recommended. For more details, please refer to our recommended packing list in the ‘Essential trip information’.

Rise and shine for the 35-kilometre drive (approx 2hrs) to Masiakampy, where you will find a traditional barge waiting to escort you along the Tsiribihina River. These flat bottom boats were once used to transport tobacco, but without that precious cargo they make a comfortable way to cruise along the water and access the remote reaches of western Madagascar. For the next few days, you’ll have the chance to spot wildlife on the banks and in the water, enjoy easy walks to hidden waterfalls and stop off in rural villages. Climb aboard and meet the crew, then settle in and enjoy some lunch as you travel through flat farming plains and enter the dramatic gorges of the Tsiribihina, stopping in the afternoon to trek to a waterfall before returning to a large sandbank to set up camp.

  • Camping (1 night)
  • Miandrivazo - Tsiribihina River Trip

Your travel today will be approximately 2 hours.

River camping is a simple wild camping experience. Sleeping mats and a single blanket will be provided. As recommended in our packing list in the Essential Trip Information, you may wish to carry a sleeping bag or sleeping sheet. These items are not available for hire. There are no bathroom facilities and there will be limited fresh water on the boat for washing. A bush toilet is the only option for the next three days.

Due to some zebu robberies in local villages in 2018, local authorities have decided to deploy military personal in some remote areas. Because of this, you may be accompanied by a military escort for part of or the entire trip. Your safety is of upmost importance, and we are confident that should your trip have these escorts that they will not affect your journey or enjoyment. We are privileged to visit this is fragile ecosystem. Please act responsibly in relation to personal hygiene waste disposal. Depending on the water level, our departure point may vary.

Enjoy a full day gliding along the water today, travelling into the heart of the river and waving to the locals on the banks and barges as you pass. In the absence of roads, nature flourishes along the river in this part of Madagascar – watch out for herds of zebus crossing the river, and flashes of colour as you look for bee-eaters, herons, and egrets in this bird lovers’ paradise. Stop occasionally for a village walk or a short trek for animal spotting before setting up camp at a village along the shore. This evening, light a campfire and enjoy some traditional Malagasy music and dancing with the locals.

Enjoy one last morning along the Tsiribihina river before disembarking the boat and bidding farewell to the crew. Make a quick stop at Belo-sur-Tsiribihina, a small village nestled in the marshes and mangroves of the Delta, to check out the market and grab some lunch before beginning the 5-hour 4x4 off-road drive to Bekopaka. Once we arrive, take the rest of the day to enjoy a swim or a refreshing shower and rest your weary limbs. Tomorrow, you’ll be taking on the Small Tsingy.

Your travel today will be approximately 5 hours.

During your road journey in the region you may be accompanied by a military escort for part of or the entire trip as part of a convoy. The convoy will depart from Belo-sur-Tsiribihina at 2 pm and make limited stops. Your safety is of upmost importance and we are confident that should your trip have these escorts that they will not affect the journey or the enjoyment.

Rise early, pick a comfortable outfit and pack some snacks, as today you’ll spend up to five hours trekking through the Small Tsingy, located in Bemaraha National Park. Scramble and navigate through a labyrinth of limestone formations that resemble a forest made of rock. Stop at two lookout points along the way for photo opportunities and a chance to take in the impressive surrounds. In the afternoon, unwind with a float down the Manambolo River on a pirogue (wooden dugout canoe) under the shadow of these towering rock cliffs. Enjoy an easy afternoon cave stroll, taking the sight of stalactites, stalagmites and the eerie tombs of the Vazimba – said to be the earliest inhabitants of Madagascar.

  • Bemaraha National Park - Small Tsingy walking circuit
  • Bemaraha National Park - Manombolo River Canoe Ride

Embrace another early start this morning and prepare for another action-packed trip to the Great Tsingy. Getting up early again might be a struggle, but it’s the best way to beat the heat and more intense crowds. Largely unexplored until the 1990s (the name Tsingy is very roughly translated as ‘place where one cannot walk barefoot’ in Malagasy), the area is now easier to navigate due to a series of bridges, semi-permanent climbing plugs and other equipment. Feel your heart stop as you pass over a sheer drop via a suspended bridge, a truly breathtaking experience that those with vertigo may wish to skip. Animal lovers should keep an eye out for 11 species of lemurs, 100 species of birds and 45 endemic reptiles and amphibians, including the Madagascar iguana and Antsingy leaf chameleon.

  • Bemaraha National Park - Big Tsingy Trek

There is another long day of travel ahead - including an 8-hour 4x4 adventure on bumpy roads. Grab that book or download a podcast and prepare to keep yourself occupied as you cross the Manambolo River and the Tsiribihina River by ferry, arriving in the laid-back seaside town of Morondava in time for a spectacular sunset in the Avenue of the Baobabs. These cartoonish, towering trees are native to Madagascar, and the variety you’ll see lit from behind this evening are adansonia grandidieri, the tallest of them all. Watch the sky turn pink and yellow and finally cast these trees – many of which are up to 800 years old – in shadow. Spend the night in Morondava and take a well-deserved rest.

  • Morondava - Sunset at Baobab Alley

Your travel today will be approximately 10 hours.

Take some time this morning to enjoy free time in Morondava. You may choose to relax on the beach or visit the local markets. This afternoon we will make our way to Miandrivazo.

Your travel today will be approximately 6.5 hours.

Depart this morning for Antsirabe, the capital of the Vakinankaratra region. Along the way, enjoy an easy trek in the countryside and discover the beauty of the local lakes, including the emerald-green waters of Tritiva, an extinct crater surrounded by verdant forest. Hike through the lakes district and sit down for a picnic-style lunch. Antsirabe maintains a Malagasy touch, thanks to the contrast of its bustling street markets and French-inspired facades. Located in the highlands, it's a popular spa town thanks to the hot springs and thermal baths, and the colourful rickshaws known as 'pousse-pousse' are a popular form of transport.

Your travel today will be approximately 8.5 hours.

Make your return to the capital city of Antananarivo this morning where our trip comes to an end around 2 pm.

What Are Travelers Saying About Their Experiences on African Cruises?

Travelers are sharing varied experiences about African cruises, highlighting both positive adventures and areas for improvement.

  • Diverse Wildlife Sightings
  • Cultural Interactions
  • Scenic Landscapes
  • Quality of Service
  • Price and Value Comparisons
  • Environmental Concerns
  • Safety and Security Issues

Travelers’ perspectives vary significantly across these factors, providing a nuanced view of what to expect on an African cruise.

Diverse Wildlife Sightings: Travelers on African cruises often rave about the opportunity to view unique wildlife, such as elephants, lions, and diverse marine life. Many itineraries include stops at renowned national parks and reserves. For instance, the Kruger National Park in South Africa offers safari experiences that enable cruisers to witness animals in their natural habitats. A 2022 survey by Cruise Critic found that 78% of respondents ranked wildlife encounters as a highlight of their cruise.

Cultural Interactions: Cruises provide travelers with chances to engage with local cultures. Many cruise lines offer guided tours featuring music, dance, and local cuisine. Passengers appreciate learning about the histories of places like Zanzibar and the Serengeti. However, some travelers express concerns about these interactions feeling superficial or overly touristy.

Scenic Landscapes: African cruises present breathtaking views, including tropical coastlines and mountains. Passengers often mention stunning sunsets over the ocean or breathtaking views from the decks of their ships. The Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is frequently highlighted as a must-see destination during river cruises.

Quality of Service: While some passengers commend the attentive service onboard, others report inconsistency. Reviews highlight staff friendliness and knowledge, but some travelers mention delays in service and availability of amenities. The 2023 survey by Travel Weekly noted that service quality on African cruises varied significantly across different cruise lines.

Price and Value Comparisons: Travelers frequently discuss value for money on African cruises. Some find these cruises offer competitive prices for unique experiences. Conversely, others feel that prices are high relative to the service and amenities provided. According to a Forbes report, cost differences largely depend on cruise line and itinerary, but travelers are encouraged to compare options carefully.

Environmental Concerns: Many travelers express concerns about environmental sustainability. Some cruise lines have adopted eco-friendly practices, yet passengers often ask for more comprehensive measures. A study by the World Wildlife Fund suggests that the cruise industry must further contribute to conservation efforts to protect vulnerable ecosystems.

Safety and Security Issues: Travelers sometimes mention safety and security as a concern, particularly in areas known for political unrest. Most cruise lines provide security briefings and guidance for passengers, but personal experiences vary. The U.S. State Department emphasizes the importance of being aware of local situations when traveling to particular regions of Africa.

Travelers’ diverse experiences on African cruises highlight the importance of researching and planning to maximize enjoyment while considering safety and environmental impacts.

Must-Sees - Madagascar

Lunar landscapes and extraordinary geology, fantastic beaches, roads bordered by baobabs... Madagascar has plenty of surprises around every corner.

Must-Sees - Madagascar

The Essentials - Madagascar

As well as superb beaches, Madagascar has fragile natural surroundings, a strong culture and an exciting history. Here are a few hints to help you familiarise yourself with this ever-fascinating and sometimes-puzzling destination.

The Essentials - Madagascar

Be charmed by the island of Nosy Komba

Less well-known than neighbouring Nosy Be, Nosy Komba is an unspoilt gem. This small volcanic island off the north tip of Madagascar retains its authentic charm and is the scene for a breathtaking performance from Mother Nature. Those that venture here enjoy the emerald waters, tranquil beaches, traditional fishing villages and forests that are home to adorable black lemurs . On Nosy Komba, as throughout Madagascar, the roads are simple tracks. There are no cars or electricity: nothing disturbs the peace and quiet.

Go to a dizzying forest!

Go to a dizzying forest!

Near Morondava, a coastal town in the west of Madagascar, are some of the most beautiful specimens of the island's iconic trees. In the middle of the scrubland, the surprising baobab forest contains over 1,200 of these monsters that can reach 30 metres in height and 10 metres in diameter. The highlight: Avenue of the Baobabs . The rough ochre pathway almost seems to be in dialogue with the enormous smooth brown trunks either side. The high-up leaves contrast with the blue of the sky. Simply look up to be amazed by the dizzying height and beauty of the panorama before you.

Be soothed by the magical sacred lake of Mangatsa

Be soothed by the magical sacred lake of Mangatsa

The sacred lake of Mangatsa is a peaceful haven far from any hustle or bustle. Its transparent water has something of the dreamlike about it and lets you see the carp and eels swimming safely below the surface. There is no fishing here: the Sakalava tribe believe these fish to be carrying the souls of dead kings. The zebu skulls and red and white material attached to the branches and trunks of the weeping willows bordering the lake only add to the sacred ambiance. Legend has it that Mangatsa was a village before it was turned into a lake by a banished sorcerer. Stop off at a Sakalava village to learn more about the customs and lifestyle of this famous Madagascan tribe.

Admire the Cirque Rouge of Majunga

Admire the Cirque Rouge of Majunga

For 1.8 million years, erosion has shaped the lunar landscapes of the Cirque Rouge , about an hour's drive from Majunga. The sandstone panorama extends over 40 hectares in shades from green to pink, yellow, orange and blood red. Hoodoos, cliffs, peaks and petrified wood combine to create some unusual views.

Discover native fauna at Ankarafantsika National Park

Discover native fauna at Ankarafantsika National Park

Ankarafantsika National Park is one of the biggest national parks in Madagascar. Covering 1,350 km2, it is home to many species and unique biodiversity : 129 bird species including 75 natives. One of them, the Madagascan fish eagle, is endangered. You can also see various lemurs including the mouse lemur: the small primate in the world. The park's craggy landscape is interesting too, with lavakas (huge holes on the hillside), lakes and forests.

Meet

Meet "sea nomads"

Coloured pirogues line up next to each other. To reach the Betania Peninsula , you need to climb on board one of these fragile boats. And the journey begins. You cross the mangrove area on a maze of water, surrounded by endless birds including herons, egrets and kingfishers. Once in Betania, you can see tranquil village life for yourself. This is the home of the Vezo: the only nomadic people in Madagascar. Vezo means "sea nomads". While some make dhows (traditional iconic Indian Ocean boats), others take care of daily life in timeless scenes that visitors will never forget.

Appreciate a more relaxed way of life on Nosy Tanikely

Appreciate a more relaxed way of life on Nosy Tanikely

An idyllic little island to the west of Nosy Komba, Nosy Tanikely ("the little land island") has everything to delight tourists. Since 2010, it has been a coastal and marine protected area , which makes it ideal for swimming and diving . Barracudas, bluespotted stingrays, swordfish, leopard sharks... Marine animal lovers are always happy here. The superb beach and crystal-clear waters also make the island an ideal stop for those who like relaxing with their toes in the water. Hiking enthusiasts will be content if they take the little path leading up to the lighthouse built at the start of the 20th century at the highest point on the island.

Visit paradise, Nosy Boraha and Nosy Nato

Visit paradise, Nosy Boraha and Nosy Nato

Truly get away from it all. You're in paradise . Nosy Boraha and Nosy Nato are famous for their stunningly beautiful coves, deserted white-sand beaches and palms caressing clear waters... Certified divers will enjoy exploring the seabed with its many fish including damselfish, trumpetfish, clownfish, sea cucumbers, butterflyfish, turtles, crocodile fish, jacks, barracudas... On Nosy Boraha, the inland area has a few big surprises, contributing to the feeling that you're in the Garden of Eden . Lush vegetation, waterfalls and natural pools make this a spectacular retreat.

Dive off Nosy Mitsio

Dive off Nosy Mitsio

70 km to the north-east of Nosy Be, there are several inhabited islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The biggest, Mitsio , is particularly impressive with its perfect beaches , emerald waters and lush vegetation with baobabs and orchids growing haphazardly everywhere. This calm island is conducive to the deepest sense of tranquillity, with the only entertainment a few fishermen. On Mitsio's southern side, you can see the island's basalt columns that look like organ pipes several tens of metres tall... Impressive.

Red alert

A river loaded with rust-coloured mud at the bottom of a canyon itself displaying coppery tones from vermilion to tangerine. Peaks sharpened by the wind, rain and sun transforming this burnt land. Expanses of tan-coloured earth. Here and there, a few touches of green in the form of spiky trees contrast with this decor dominated by warm shades. Welcome to Tsingy Rouge Park and its stunning panoramas. .

Dos. Taking your time is key in Madagascar. One of the favourite expressions here is mora-mora ("gently"). It's not normal to use informal language with someone you've just met, except if they encourage you to do so. Don'ts. Never badmouth ancestors or the elderly, who are extremely well-respected. The country is also governed by fady prohibitions and taboos. The issue? There are so many of them and they vary by region and even by village. Fortunately, the guides will be sure to remind you of them.

Unique features

How did lemurs arrive on Madagascar? There are two hypotheses about the island's iconic primates. One thing is certain: they came from the African continent. Some scientists say the ancestors of these lemurs crossed the Mozambique Channel at a time (several tens of million years ago) when the land wasn't underwater. Others believe they came to Madagascar 20 million years ago after a hurricane, using tree trunks and broken branches as rafts.

Rice is the dietary staple here. There are more than ten varieties which are eaten in the morning, at lunchtime and in the evening. The Madagascans eat an average of 128 kg of rice per person per year. Even when consumed with other foods, it's never considered a side, but rather the cornerstone of the dish. It goes well with ravitoto : a typical speciality cooked with pork and pounded cassava leaves baked in garlic.

Myths & legends

Some people use the Big Bad Wolf to stop children behaving badly and going outside on their own. The Madagascans have Trimobe : a child-eating ogre who lives in lavish surroundings in the middle of the forest and whose favourite phrase is "Smells like human".

In the spotlight

The Reniala NGO fights to protect Madagascar's lemurs from hunting and captivity. A native primate iconic of the "Great Island", lemurs are now classed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List. Yet, lemurs are known as the "gardeners of Madagascar" and help develop the country's forests, including the famous baobabs, by spreading seeds. To protect this unique environment, the NGO has launched the "Buy a baobab, save a lemur" campaign offering donors the chance to symbolically own a giant tree. The money raised goes to caring for the lemurs who need it.

Books. In his autobiographical novel Revenir , Raharimanana recalls memories of a happy childhood and an intellectual father who was arrested and tortured. His own story interlinks with the wider picture of a stunning island beset by corruption, riots and lynching... A much-needed account.

Music. Since the 50s, Madagascar has been fertile ground for jazz musicians . Some have enjoyed an international career, performing in France and the USA. Among them are the Rabeson brothers, Georges and Serge Rahoerson, Andy Razaf, Arnaud Razafy, Alain Razafinohatra, Joël Rakotomamonjy, Arly Rajaobelina… Thanks to their talents and the groups they formed, they have contributed to the development of jazz in Madagascar and helped it across borders.

Film. At the end of World War Two, having fought Nazi Germany for France, the Madagascans hoped for independence. An armed revolt was gradually organised against the colonial forces and French in situ. Fahavalo is the name given to these "enemies". It's also the title of Marie-Clémence Andriamonta-Pes's 2017 documentary film which gives the floor to the last-remaining witnesses of this bloody uprising, interspersed with archive images. There were over 100,000 deaths. Not many people know about this part of history, which some consider the catalyst for independentist hopes in Africa's French colonies.

Facts and figures

Of the 8 baobab species recorded worldwide, 6 are Madagascar's own. It's thought that some baobabs can live to the age of 1500 , and reach 30 metres in height and 12 metres in diameter .

17 people have been killed in 2 mass shootings in the same town in South Africa Back to video

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Seventeen people, including 15 women, were killed in two mass shootings that took place in close proximity to each other in a rural town in South Africa, police said Saturday.

A search was underway for the suspects, national police spokesperson Brig. Athlenda Mathe said in a statement. The victims were 15 women and two men, she said. One other person was in critical condition in the hospital.

The shootings took place Friday night in the town of Lusikisiki in Eastern Cape province in southeastern South Africa. Video released by police showed that the shootings occurred at two houses in the same neighborhood, which is a collection of rural homesteads on the outskirts of the town.

Twelve women and a man were killed in one house and three women and a man were killed in the other house, police said.

Four women, one man and a 2-month-old baby survived.

“A manhunt has been launched to apprehend those behind these heinous killings,” Mathe said.

Local media reported that the people were attending a family gathering at the time of the shooting, but the motive for the killings remains unknown.

Police minister Senzo Mchunu told a media briefing on Saturday that a team of detectives and forensic experts had been deployed.

“We have full faith and confidence in the team that has been deployed to crack this case and find these criminals. Either they hand themselves over or we will fetch them ourselves,” Mchunu said.

South Africa, a country of 62 million, recorded 12,734 homicides in the first six months of this year, according to official crime statistics from the police. That’s an average of more than 70 a day. Firearms are by far the biggest cause of deaths in those cases.

Mass shootings have become increasingly common in recent years, sometimes targeting people in their homes

Ten members of the same family, including seven women and a 13-year-old boy, were killed in a mass shooting at their home in the neighboring KwaZulu-Natal province in April 2023.

Firearm laws are reasonably strict in South Africa, but authorities have often pointed to the large number of illegal, unregistered guns in circulation as a major problem.
