ABC are an English new wave band from Sheffield. They formed in 1980, and have undergone several lineup changes over the years.

Frontman Martin Fry is the only permanent member of ABC, having never left the band since their formation in 1980; it’s also true that the band themselves have never officially disbanded over the course of their three-decade-plus career, which perhaps beggars belief given the undeniable fluctuation of the fortunes over the course of that time. They enjoyed their greatest success in the eighties - perhaps unsurprisingly, given the popularity of the new wave genre during that decade - and their 1982 debut album ‘The Lexicon of Love’ contains most of their early hits. ‘Tears Are Not Enough’ hit the top twenty in the UK, as did ‘Poison Arrow’, which would go on to feature in the eighties-set video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

It was the 1985 record ‘How to Be a...Zillionaire’ was the group’s biggest success on the other side of the Atlantic, with the single ‘Be Near Me’ seeing ABC hit the top ten in the U.S. for the first time. Since 1990, the group has effectively only comprised Fry, but he continues to use the name to tour - he’s especially popular on the eighties nostalgia circuit - as well as record new material, with ‘Traffic’ released in 2008.

Live reviews

Having been a fan of ABC since the release of their excellent first album, you could definitely say I am a fan! Martin Fry still has it! With all his suave and dapper style, he still can sing you into a musical trance! The smooth style of his vocals still ring true. The band that backed him was equally impressive. Excellent musicianship and great jamming solos! We had to wait 2 and a half hours for the show to start, but it was well worth it. The venue was a relatively new one and occupied the audience with a steady stream of 80's music and videos. We were right in front and closest to Martin! He was so gracious at the end of the show, that he signed my pristine and well preserved vinyl copy of "How to be a Millionaire" right on the stage after the encore! The show was fantastically intimate and the band played all the great hits. My personal favorites were "Be Near Me" and "When Smokey Sings". All the songs sounded perfect, like they were right off the record! Martin even stuck around outside to take photos with fans and sign one item each. But I got more than one signed. He. He. When I met him outside, he actually spent more time talking with me than any of the other fans because he liked my Siouxsie shirt and we joked around for a few minutes much to the dismay of the venue's retarded security staff. It was an excellent ABC performance and although that was the last show of the tour, I highly recommend seeing ABC if and when they come back to the states! It will definitely be memorable!

Sunday 8th November. Theatre Royal Drury Lane. ABC. Sunday night in Theatre land. Willy Wonka has given up the venue tonight for ABC performing the whole of Lexicon of Love with the Southbank Sinfonia.

It’s all very civilised in the circle of the Theatre Royal and the orchestra enters the stage to polite applause. The band come on and the first half of the show is a selection of tunes from across the ABC back catalogue including three new songs with ‘Flames of Desire’ being the highlight for me.

However, this is very much the starter for tonight’s main course. I felt Martin Fry was holding a little back for the second half of the set and boy did he deliver.

Fry belying his years turns the clock back thirty years and delivers a faultless, almost, run through of the classic Lexicon of Love. Everyone knows the words to all of the songs and there’s very little filler on this classic pop album. The orchestra adds something to the proceedings and the format works really well.

Tonight’s show is being filmed and for continuity purposes we have 4 ever 2 gether repeated a couple of times but it all adds to the magic of the evening.

A great night out bringing back memories of the eighties and we’re all humming the tunes all the way back to the station.

There’s probably no single genre of music that represents the eighties quite as accurately, or as obviously, as new wave; it genuinely is synonymous with the decade, and among its genuine success stories were ABC, who formed in Sheffield back in 1980, right in time for the sound’s explosion. Their debut album The Lexicon of Love was a huge success on both sides of the Atlantic, topping the charts in the UK and making the top twenty-five over in the U.S., and spawned a slew of hits that were not only successes in terms of sales and radio play at the time, but continue to stand up as classics of the genre today, especially their signature song ‘Poison Arrow’. Although singer Martin Fry now remains the sole original member - he tours with a new backing group for the most part, with David Palmer only briefly rejoining him as part of VH1’s Bands Reunited programme in 2004 - the ABC name continues to be used for both live shows and new material, with Fry still proving himself both an engaging frontman and a fine singer, too. They regularly line up alongside other eighties acts like T’Pau and Rick Astley, so there’s plenty of opportunity for a multi-faceted blast of nostalgia where their shows are concerned, too.

New wave is a genre that is definitely enjoying a well deserved investment of interest from a modern audience. The easy listening vibes of Eurythmics and Spandau Ballet are now once again frequenting airwaves and one of the most popular UK artists of the new wave era was Sheffield outfit ABC. Martin Fry and company never stopped recording and touring yet they failed to recreate the commercial success of early releases including 'The Lexicon of Love' and 'Beauty Stab'.

This has never deterred the fans though who continue to pack out venues to hear classic tracks such as 'Poison Arrow' alongside newer releases. There has been a wonderfully 80s feel to all of ABC's releases and the tone does not change throughout the night. Even the newer material is accompanied by a large amount of brass instruments and catchy percussion before the saxophonist takes his moment during a complex instrumental solo. The energy levels are at fever pitch as Martin closes the evening with a double hit finale of 'When Smokey Sings' and 'The Look of Love'.

The band was great and Martin as classy as ever. It's a rare treat to get ABC stateside, so I was thrilled by the band, the songs, etc. Viva Live, Millionaire, Be Near Me highlights for me. But with that said, I was disappointed in the crowd that talked throughout the entire Retro Futura lineup. They were too busy noshing on chicken salad sandwiches and Prosecco to get off their rear ends to dance, show appreciation to the musical acts, etc. Chastain Park Ampitheater is a great venue -- I traveled from New Orleans to attend. But I won't go back unless the seated section is GA, as it is for numerous shows there. I didn't sign up for a garden party. And the number of people just absolutely trashed drunk afterward is absurd. Its BYOB there so be forewarned if there is table seating for the concert you've waited a lifetime to see, you might consider traveling a bit further to find a more appreciative audience. I bet Retro Futura does the same too -- every one of the six acts in this tour commented about how lame the audience was. Sad.

Was in UK for just four days June 2022. Saw Lisa Stansfield (amazing!) and Simply Red near Canterbury--great weather. The next day it was a tossup ABC in Bristol or Simple Minds at Blenheim Palace near Oxford the next day. I chose Simple Minds and it was rained out the entire concert. the brits had a great time but I wished the whole night I had chosen ABC in Bristol for their 40th anniversary tour. Will see them soon---must seem them in Ojai California state-side July 2022.

Great show at a great venue. The orchestra sounded fantastic and ABC as gòod as they always have. Only amazing point is that how come they didnt do more hits?

The first hall of the show was good but lacking in recognisable hits. They are hugely talented and sound fantastic but we had to wait until the 2nd half when lexicon of love was played before standing up and dancing was required. 37 years and their hits are as rare and valuable as his gold jacket.

Oh what memories!

Saw ABC live at a small pub in a northern Melbourne (Vic) several years ago and wow have they still got it, Martin is a smooth and polished performer and vocally still excellent. Now with the recent release of the Lexicon Of Love II I wait with great anticipation of a new tour of Australia..come on down under again please!!

Fantastic show! Orchestra was amazing, new songs and old. Up dancing in the aisles.

First time I've seen ABC live. Took my son with me who is a converted fan. Who would have thought 34 years since Lexicon of Love....

Staff at the venue were very helpful and attentive.

ABC is fantastic live!! My wife and I had such a great time last night at the Retro Futura concert at the Wiltern Theater - 07/29/2018.

If you get a chance to see them live, don't even think about it. You will not be disappointed. Martin Fry is one classy rock star!

ABC Announce Extra Tour Dates For ‘The Lexicon Of Love’ Tour

Due to the tour’s popularity, where dozens of venues have sold out already, english pop band abc are announcing extra tour dates for their ‘the lexicon of love’ 40th anniversary tour. the legendary group have been performing their debut album in international venues since last june, commemorating its 40th anniversary since its release in june 1982, and still continue to sell out venues nearly a half century after their formation..

ABC didn’t start as ABC – they are rooted in Sheffield electronic group Vice Versa, with 2 of the 3 founding members of ABC, Mark White and Steven Singleton, formerly being part of the band. The third founding member, Martin Fry, joined them shortly after holding an interview with Vice Versa and joining them as a synth player. In September 1980, the trio held their last performance as Vice Versa, after which they split off to form ABC. They started work on their debut album, ‘The Lexicon Of Love’, shortly after, which released in June 1982, topping UK charts and becoming one of the most iconic albums of the 80s; so iconic that, even 40 years later, crowds are still filling out venues to see the legendary ABC.

The tour first came to fruition in 2009, and had been in the works between then and June 2022, when it finally launched. Despite Fry being the only official member remaining in the band, the rest of the group still came to play, creating a performance for the ages that sold out all their venues across the tour, and pushed demand for remaining tour tickets even higher. Now, the group have announced more venues for their legendary performance, going through to 2024 and touring multiple cities, including their home of Sheffield, to show the kind of performance you’d never want to miss.

ABC band

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? ABC

It’s the look, it’s the look, the look of abc shoot that poison arrow, sheffield new-wave band abc celebrated 40 years of chart hits in 2021. yes, back in 1981 the fresh faced 20-somethings released their debut single, “tears are not enough” (which broke the top twenty), and they became 80’s icons, along with the likes of spandau ballet and duran duran , abc remain one of the most recognisable sounds of the new era as pop music developed and utilised the most modern and advanced equipment available. despite the comings and goings of various artists, the heart of abc always remained the three founding members, singer martin fry (b.1958), percussionist stephen singleton (b.1959) and guitarist/keyboard player mark white (b.1961), although for the hit-making years, drummer david palmer would even the numbers out..

Singleton and White had formed the group Vice Versa in 1977 and had already released four albums before meeting with Fry, who was writing for a fanzine and interviewing the duo and ‘happened’ to mention his own ability to sing! Long story short, they formed ABC! Signed to Neutron Records, they released the aforementioned debut in October 1981. But it was the follow up, “Poison Arrow”, which made their name globally in early 1982 when it went to No.25 Stateside and produced a top ten hit internationally including a No.6 placing at home. With their first album ready for release, the third single would deliver a number one hit and a No.18 chart position in America, whilst reaching No.4 in the UK.

“The Look Of Love”, arguably their signature tune, was presented to a UK audience on Top Of The Pops with Fry wearing an all gold suit! Very new romantic. Very 80’s. It worked as the song became one of the biggest sellers of the year. As did the album, “The Lexicon Of Love”, which topped the UK chart and won Platinum discs all over the globe, including in America. A trio of top ten hits in the UK was achieved with “All Of My Heart” but before the band moved on to the next chapter, David Palmer left as the original threesome regrouped for album number two. The first single, “That Was Then But This Is Now” came the following October, but despite great expectations, seemed to fall short on both sides of the Atlantic, reaching No.18 in the UK and No.89 on the other side. The short-lived second album, “Beauty Stab”, was also received ‘lukewarm’ and after just one more single, “SOS”, Steve Singleton left the band.

Journalist Fiona Russell Powell (b.1962) and US musician David Yarritu joined the remaining Fry and White for part three in 1984 as the ‘refreshed’ quartet released “How To be A Millionaire”, which did put them back in the US top twenty, but missed the UK top 40. Further success was accorded Stateside with the album, “How to Be A…Zillionaire!” in 1985 along with a top ten hit there, “Be Near Me” (UK No.26). Powell and Yarritu made this their only ABC work and after two more low charting singles, left the band the following year. Considering all their options, Fry and White decided to continue ABC as a duo and hit back in 1987 with “When Smokey Sings”, their tribute to Smokey Robinson as well as a number of other ‘legendary’ performers and it’s catchy, upbeat tone seem to reignite something in us all as it produced their biggest chart hit in five years (US No.5, UK No.11).

A top ten hit album, “Alphabet City”, followed and a further UK chart hit with “The Night You Murdered Love”, all in 1987 as the pair now seemed to settle into this new format and capitalised with the release of their fifth album, “Up”, in 1989. A small UK hit was afforded the lead single, “One Better World” (No.32), upon release but after that, the album and subsequent releases fell flat. 1990 brought the Gold certified a best of, “Absolutely”, along with a remix of “The Look Of Love” while the following year, ABC released a new album, “Abracadabra”, which featured the single “Love Conquers All” (UK No.47). After the release of a second single, “Say It” (UK No.42), Fry and White, decided to take a break for an unknown length of time…

…that lasted six years with Fry, alone, releasing new material in 1997. Still using the ‘ABC’ name, Fry released the album, “Skyscraping”, and the lead single, “Stranger Things” on the deConstruction label, better known for it’s dance/club anthems of the early 90’s and, of course, it’s big signing of 1994, one Kylie Minogue . Sadly, the label, or the music, was no “Confide In Me” and the project was only appreciated by a very small audience. Fry continued to play ABC’s hits live and released the new song, “Peace And Tranquility”, in 2001 in support of another best of compilation. What was notable about this period was the reacquaintance of former drummer David Palmer, who made ABC a duo once more in 2003 and after a twenty year absence from the group. The pair would eventually record and release the album, “Traffic”, in 2008 as well as the single, “The Very First Time”.

But after six years as a duo, Palmer left Martin Fry to go it alone. And that’s what he’s done ever since. Touring and guesting at numerous 80’s festivals and keeping the ABC flame alive to his legion of fans who have followed the band for four decades now. The ABC story comes full circle with the release of the new album, “The Lexicon Of Love II” in 2016. Using the title of the band’s debut release 35 years earlier, Fry worked with noted songwriter and producer Anne Dudley to bring the past into the future and it worked! The album entered the UK chart at No.5, the best chart position since part one in 1981! The album featured the singles “Viva Love”, “The Flames Of Desire” and “Ten Below Zero”, all of which were as well received by critics as well as the public.

A new ABC best of, “The Essential ABC”, was released in 2020 along with a brand new track, “Look Good Tonite”, as Martin Fry seems set not to retire just yet and give the fans what they want for as long as possible. Not so much “When Smokey Sings”, more of when Martin sings…I hear everything!

Martin Fry’s English new-wave band is best known for their Trevor-Horn produced 1982 debut The Lexicon of Love.

ABC - Artist Page

The English new wave and dance group ABC burst onto the scene in the early 1980s when their debut album The Lexicon Of Love , produced by the in-demand Trevor Horn (dubbed ‘The Man Who Invented the Eighties’ on account of his impact on recorded culture in that era) went to Number One on the UK charts. A virtual greatest hits from the outset, The Lexicon Of Love , contains the classic singles “Poison Arrow”, “Tears Are Not Enough”, “The Look of Love (Part One)” and “All of My Heart”, distinctive sounds that gave the scene a well-dressed and sophisticated allure. The group were as impeccably turned out as their music, which is often laden with soundtrack strings and soulfully multi-tracked vocals. That’s what the fans love and can hear again on the recent studio album, The Lexicon Of Love II .

ABC went from strength to strength with a string of grand albums including the underrated Beauty Stab , the witty How To Be A… Zillionaire! and Alphabet City . Combing elements of pure pop with neo-classical arrangements and latter elements of house, disco and techno ABC remained one of the definitive acts in that era, also masters of the 12” mix, but they were far from confined to the epoch and gave us further goodies in the shape of Up and Abracadabra . They are well represented here with the studio discs – often in augmented form – joined by live and compilation sets.

‘Grease’: How A Nostalgic Soundtrack Became A Timeless Hit

‘i won’t last a day without you’: the carpenters not-so ‘unlucky hit’.

The ABC name has been kept alive by their frontman Martin Fry, writer of so many brilliant songs in their repertoire, and ABC’s legend ensures that whenever they perform they retain not just their loyal fan base but also a new generation of listeners eager to discover their superbly polished and unique style of music.

Go back to the late 1970s and the vibrant Sheffield scene where we find Stephen Singleton and Mark White fronting Vice Versa for their own independent label Neutron Records. A fortuitous meeting with one Martin Fry, a local fanzine editor from Stockport, led them to enlist the elegantly attired writer as synthesiser player. One of their most significant dates was with The Human League at Sheffield University (Fry is now an Honourary Professor at this establishment). On a short tour of Holland Fry started to improvise on vocals and the results were strong enough to push him into the limelight. Given the change, it was decided a new name and concept was called for and so in 1980 Vice Versa became ABC. Easy as…

The first single, a funky synthpop extravaganza called “Tears Are Not Enough” was released ahead of the first album in October 1981 and headed for the Top 20. It also made inroads into the underground dance movement thanks to a 12” version released by Neutron/Phonogram that stretched out the A-side, and the flip, “Alphabet Soup”, giving them a cachet as well as prime time TV exposure.

With the newcomer David Palmer on drums and Mark Lickley providing bass, ABC captured the moment. Trevor Horn, engineer Gary Langan and orchestrating genius Anne Dudley also had a surprise up their sleeve in the guise of JJ Jeczalik whose Fairlight CMI programming added another vital ingredient. The group were delighted with this arrangement and were keen to stretch out, utilising Singleton’s saxes and White’s keyboards and guitars with assists from Kim Wear on trumpet, Gaynor Sadler on harp, Luis Jardim on percussion and Andy Gray the trombone. Already revealing a perfectionist nature ABC were more than happy to include guest female vocalists Tessa Webb (on “Date Stamp”) and Karen Clayton; her speaking voice part on “Poison Arrow” is essential to the mood.

Lush and often experimental The Lexicon of Love threw up so many good things. “The Look of Love” became their biggest UK chart hit and broke them in America when it made #1 on the Billboard Dance/Disco chart, an incredible achievement given the calibre of dance music bubbling around then. Ever savvy and with a weather eye on the zeitgeist ABC also specialised in provocative promotional videos and ABC would be worth discovering for the debut disc alone. The ten-track original has since been pleasingly expanded. Remastered in 1996 with remixes, live and demo material, in 2004 it received a total makeover – here you get the original disc plus the singles, the 1981 Phonogram demos and a Live show from Hammersmith Odeon (November 1982), the whole thing beautifully packaged.

The Lexicon experience, though wildly successful, was also a drain on resources, financial and physical. For Beauty Stab  (1983) ABC retained much of their stylised approach but added a gustier guitar/bass/drums backing with Roxy Music sidemen Andy Newmark and Alan Spenner bringing a more muscular feel to the sessions.

Retaining Gary Langan the group also decided to take production control and carried off proceedings well enough to ensure that the hits didn’t dry up. “That Was Then but This Is Now” and “S.O.S” might have signalled a somewhat baffling diversion – indeed some contended they’d deliberately set out to bamboozle their audience – but that now seems like overstatement. The 2005 re-release adds “Vertigo” and a tongue in cheek medley called “Selections from the Magnificent New ABC Long-Player Beauty Stab” (something of a pastiche or dig at standard promotional hyperbole) as well as a free form take on “That Was Then…”

Bands often make their more interesting music at a time when they could easily rest-up and thanks to tracks like “By Default by Design” and “The Power of Persuasion” Beauty Stab  adheres to that rule.

Romance and glossy electro-funk are all over the third disc, How To Be A… Zillionaire!  (1985). Although Singleton had made his departure incoming friend Fiona Russell-Powell (aka Eden) brought her fashion sense and vocal styling to the party as well as her journalistic nous (she worked for The Face at the time) and since she had been involved in Vice Versa just before Fry’s arrival her character enriched the set-up.

ABC configured in a different format now with guest guitarists and Chris Whitten on drums. White moved towards the synthesisers and co-production. Overall this is another deeply satisfying disc that contains the international hits “(How To Be A) Millionaire” and “Be Near Me”, another assault on the American pop and dance charts. Released with extra bonus tracks on the CD and greatly expanded on the 2005 version, this is as good as it gets in the mid-80s and remains a firm fan favourite.

In 1987 ABC re-emerge with producer Bernard Edwards for the fine Alphabet City , a disc that casts an eye towards New York City. The standout track “When Smokey Sings”, a tribute to Smokey Robinson and the Miracles will become one of their best-loved singles. Now fronted solely by Fry and White again there is no shortage of classy guests. Richard Niles provides the string arrangement for “Smokey” and “The Night You Murdered Love”, Danny Thompson plays double bass, Judd Lander the harmonica and Howie Casey the sax, with other friends also paying a visit. Edwards’s production acumen helps make this classic and there are several songs that require re-examination: notably “Minneapolis” and “Chicago” on the 2005 remastered version. The dance mix of “King Without a Crown” kept ABC at the forefront in America.

In 1989 ABC offered their take on house music with Up  where Fry and White bossed the main sound with assists from Blaze, Julian Mendelsohn and Sonic Bob Kraushaar. The singles “One Better World” and “The Real Thing” were written with the prevailing ecstatic culture in mind but “North” and “The Greatest Love of All” are also typically lush, late-night ABC.

By 1990 they were due a comprehensive greatest hits package and Absolutely fits that bill with a career sweeping examination of all their commercial highs. This is an excellent entry-level disc or primer for those who wish to hear what all the fuss is about and a memory jerker for everyone else. But not wishing to rest on their archive ABC returned to the studio in 1981 to make Abracadabra , the last album to feature Mark White. Sessions began in Detroit, Chicago and New York but the bulk was finalised in London. A perfect marriage of mood and style the album did have an impact within the ranks. The process was as intense as ever and Fry would later voice reservations. Even so “Spellbound”, featuring Roxy Music’s Phil Manzanera, and the work of Cleveland Watkiss and Marius de Vries, shouldn’t be overlooked. A tight fusion of glossy pop, techno and dance, Abracadabra also features one of those singles that slipped away, the sublime “Love Conquers All.”

Nor should Skyscraping and The Lexicon of Live be forgotten. Look of Love – The Very Best of ABC (2001) adds two new Fry songs, “Peace and Tranquillity” and “Blame”. The expanded version of this is Gold (2004) a 2-CD set with extra mixes. In more recent years the excellent 2008 disc Traffic returns ABC to their familiar hunting ground with some of Fry’s finest writing and drummer David Palmer back in the fold alongside producer Gary Langan.

Incredible as it seems it’s now well over thirty years since this idiosyncratic group first entered our consciousness. Thanks to the retro and regeneration movement they will always have a place in the hearts of the devoted. The recent studio album, The Lexicon Of Love II , reunites Martin with orchestral arranger Anne Dudley and features modern ABC classics the likes of ‘The Flames of Desire’, ‘Viva Love’ and ‘The Love Inside The Love’. The 2016 Christmas EP, A Christmas We Deserve , is another festive treat, with acoustic versions of songs and old and new.  Given that they began with the desire to emulate such heroes as David Bowie and Roxy Music it is entirely to the credit of Martin Fry and his ABC cohorts that they are viewed as a classic act in their own right. So there you have them: made in Sheffield and sold all over the world.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.

The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship , which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.

But on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists was late to return to the ship by more than an hour for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion on the island, which was not organized by the cruise line.

Jay and Jill Campbell of South Carolina were part of the group that was left behind.

They said that their tour’s operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship and that the local Coast Guard tried to get them on the vessel but that they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the couple and the rest of the group have been stranded for days on the island off Nigeria, grappling with language, currency issues and complicated travel to catch up with the ship.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell said on NBC's "TODAY" show Tuesday morning.

“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call. ... Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies ... finding someone that even has dollars ... trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.

"It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,’" he added.

A Norwegian spokesperson called the incident a “very unfortunate situation” and said, “Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

The cruise line said that after the guests failed to return, their passports were delivered to local port agents, in line with protocol. The company said it was working with local authorities to understand “the requirements and visas needed for the guests to reboard the ship at the next available port of call.”

On Monday, the guests had made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship was unable to safely dock there because of “adverse weather conditions” and “tidal restrictions,” Norwegian said. The guests were then contacted and provided with information to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.

Jill Campbell said they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to arrive in Senegal on Monday night.

But the couple was reconsidering whether they even wanted to return to the cruise.

"We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal," she said. "We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us."

"After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority," she added.

Ultimately, the eight passengers did rejoin the cruise before 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal, Norwegian told NBC News in an e-mail Tuesday evening, after this story originally published.

Norwegian said the passengers were responsible for making their own travel arrangements to rejoin the ship.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal," a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement. "We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available."

A silver lining of the catastrophe was that the Campbells were able to connect with another Norwegian Dawn passenger — Julia Lenkoff, 80 — who was also left on the island, but for a medical reason.

Lenkoff was on a different day tour Wednesday. She had "medically disembarked" from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

Norwegian said that its care team tried to call Lenkoff several times and was unable to reach her and that it worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for updates on her health.

The Campbells met Lenkoff and were able to put her in contact with her family in California, who flew her home — a move Lenkoff's daughter said "saved her life."

"She's a world traveler. She travels all the time. So this was going to be one of her bucket list trips, because she's been to 120 countries so far, and she wanted to get to 130," her daughter, Lana Lenkoff Geis, said in an interview that aired Tuesday on "TODAY."

Norwegian said Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, then put in the care of airport staff members to continue her journey back to the U.S., where she has safely returned.
