Rick Astley brought me up on stage at Sunrise!!’

Donnie this was the best bday present ever thank you for bringing me up on stage when you saw my vinyl!!! Rick, NKOTB, En Vogue and Salt N Pepa were all amazing!!! I love your music and the energy of this concert is out this world. Thank you so much for all the love, your talent and music please keep coming back, we will be there!!!! We will grow old with your music!!! So much talent in one concert, it’s unbelievable. Fans you can’t miss this beautiful experience!!!

Hi! I love Rick and saw him in the 80's! I haven't been to a show but I'm curious about what there is a stage B? Is this where Rick will perform? I want to know if I should buy a ticket closer to Stage B so I can see him up close!

Rick is still Rollin' in the US!

Only four stars because there was not enough Rick! St. Louis loves Rick Astley! Drove from Oklahoma to see Rick Astley with NKOTB. Came only for Rick! NOT ENOUGH RICK ASTLEY!!!!! His voice is as beautiful as ever, he never disappoints! There just needs to be MORE! Moved on to Kansas City after not having enough Rick in St. Louis. . . . NOT ENOUGH Rick Astley again! Same songs. . . NOT complaining! They are ALL wondering and could listen to them ALL day, but with all the people that came BECAUSE OF RICK ASTLEY, we may want to hear some of his newer stuff? The US isn't THAT backwards! Seriously? Traveling by vehicle, stopping for gas, food, and breaks. . .people stopping us with our Rick Astley tees on "LOVE YOUR SHIRT!" "Where did you get your shirt?" "Are you from the UK, or how did you get your shirt?" "REALLY? HE'S TOURING IN THE US?" "WHERE IS HE?" Astley! You are a bigger draw that you think! You have MORE fans in the US than you realize! We drove on to OKCity! Another blast! Baught the PartyPity tickets just to be up close and personal when you were on the little stage. There were a bunch of us that had done the same thing! Then there are the second gens all around there for Rick Astley! Just crying to be that close to Rick Astley. CRYING to touch his hand! Rick Astley! We are NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP! Seriously thinking of driving on down to N'Awlins. . . . Just for you, man!

Rick Astley is great!

Very high energy and entertaining. What a beautiful and powerful voice!

Rick Still Has It!

I remember seeing Rick Astley in the 80's, he was just as fun and energetic today as he was back then! His voice is amazing and he looks great! I know some of his music has a cheese factor, however it also brings back a lot of great memories!! If you have a chance to see him live go!! You will not be disappointed! The cover songs alone are worth the price of admission!

Rick at the Taft Theatre

Rick Astley was amazing! His voice is just as good as ever! He put on an incredibly entertaining show with a mix of old and new stuff. He's got a great band and back up singers as well. I can't wait to see him again! Great show!

Rick Astley - Man on Fire

Richard Paul Astley does not disappoint . This was our second time to see him in concert at the Loft - Center Stage and he was his fabulous self interacting with the audience and sharing bits of his life with everyone. This man puts 110% into every song he sings as well as trying to do a song set that includes something for everyone. His sense of humor is great and he keeps the audience laughing while he is all over the stage and rarely in one place very long. His energy and voice is unbelievable. He belts it out the entire time for over an hour and forty minutes non stop. Keeping in mind that this was his last show of the tour and he gave it his all. I do not understand how a man's voice can hold up the way his does, just as strong as ever. "It Takes a Strong, Strong Man. On a lesser note, the sound system was not so good as last year's pushing out the music a little hard and covering the vocals at times. We quickly learned to live with that and thoroughly enjoyed the show!

He rocked the house in Chicago!

What a great show! he has not change at all- the looks, the voice- very charming too! We have been waiting for so long for him to come to Chicago! I cant wait to see him again!

Rick knows the rules and so do I

What a great concert experience that my wife and I won’t forget.Rick didn’t disappoint.Old songs plus new and great crowd interaction. We even met him after and he signed autographs and took pics.Just a cool guy.Cant wait to see him again somewhere.

Rick Astley is better than ever!

Astley is like a fine wine: only getting better with age! I traveled from Texas to see the last show on his "50" tour & it was beyond worth it. He is a wonderful person, talented artist, & the most underrated crooner of our time.

Rick Astley on playing U.S. arenas in 2022: 'How lucky are we?'

rick astley tour history

29 years after his last hit single in the States, Rick Astley is suddenly on the biggest U.S. tour of his career. From now through July, the British pop crooner will play more than 50 dates, almost all of them in arenas.

He's a special guest on New Kid On The Block's "Mixtape Tour," along with fellow '80s/'90s hitmakers Salt N Pepa and En Vogue.

When The Tennessean reached Astley this week, it was the morning after the tour's opening night in Cincinnati, which closed with him and the rest of the acts singing his signature 1987 hit "Never Gonna Give You Up."

"I kind of love the fact that last night I sung in front of 15,000 people," he says. "...And then today, I'm in Bed Bath and Beyond looking for a coffee machine for the bus. I could be whistling 'Never Gonna Give You Up,' and there's no chance somebody would recognize me."

We doubt that. Thanks to the power of  "Give You Up" — which reignited Astley's career in 2008 via "Rickrolling," the internet prank that refuses to die — we'd bet more people on this side of the pond know the 56-year-old than ever before.

Ahead of the tour's stop at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on Friday, Astley shared a few stories and insights with us — why he joined the tour, his favorite country songs and why it's only natural for music to make you feel nostalgic.

An easy decision: "When this offer came, I talked to my wife and said, 'This tour will go to states that I will never get to play in, and we'll never see unless we're gonna do some crazy road trip.'  One of our favorite things to do is toast the sunset with half a glass of Chardonnay before I have to go on, and say, 'How lucky are we?’”

A concert on shuffle: The "Mixtape Tour" takes a non-linear approach. NKOTB are the first to take the stage, and their guests play mini-sets throughout the evening.

"They know what their fans want. And I think they wanted to feel a bit more like a party. It's like your friends made you a mixtape."

"There are lot of artists who hate using the term nostalgia...I'm sorry, if you've got 30 years behind you in music or doing anything, there's some nostalgia to the bigger moments of it. I just don't think it's a dirty word."

Fronting the Foos: "Rickrolling" has led to Astley being asked to surprise audiences in all sorts of places , from TV weather reports to the Macy's Parade.

But the best was a surprise to Astley, too. As he watched Foo Fighters from the side of stage at a 2017 festival in Tokyo, Dave Grohl came over and invited him to sing his signature hit with them — immediately. Astley called it a "mad, wonderful and beautiful experience."

"Obviously those guys are just amazing," Astley says of the band, whose drummer Taylor Hawkins died at age 50 in March. "And heaven knows what's going on in their house right now."

His country side: Ahead of his latest trip to Music City, Astley singles out Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" (a pop hit penned by country songwriting greats) and Chris Stapleton's "Either Way" as personal favorites.

Not living in the past: In 2016, Astley released his first album in 10 years: "50," it was bit of a musical "bucket list" moment, inspired by his 50th birthday.

"Instead of buying a boat or a Ferrari or crossing America on a Harley Davidson, I wanted to make a record," he says. "And the crazy thing was we had the No. 1 album in the U.K., which is just madness."

Since then, he's put out another successful full-length, a greatest hits collection and a just-released 35th anniversary edition of his debut album, "Whenever You Need Somebody."

If You Go: The Mixtape Tour with New Kids On The Block, Rick Astley, Salt N Pepa and En Vogue comes to Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on Friday. The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets start at $25.

Rick Astley: Inside the home studio where he masterminded his comeback

Rick Astley gives us a guided tour of his guitar collection

"We've tidied up a bit," says Rick Astley, welcoming us into his recording studio. "Well, my wife has... I don't really like it.

"I don't trust anyone who has a tidy studio, do you know what I mean? Sometimes you go in and you feel like you're messing the place up just by being there."

This is definitively not the case in Astley Towers™, a generously proportioned family home in the leafy suburbs of Surrey.

The singer immediately makes us feel at home, throwing open the front door as we pull up on the driveway and welcoming us inside.

Barefoot and be-quiffed, he beckons us into the kitchen for a freshly-brewed cuppa, demonstrating skills that must have made him invaluable Stock Aitken and Waterman's tea boy back in the 80s. We are even presented with a choice of mugs to complement the various blends on offer.

Why Rick Astley credits his wife with his success

Rick Astley: 'I didn't mind being called Dick Spatsley'

Caffeine administered, Astley shows us into the studio, which leads immediately off the kitchen at the back of his house (the vocal booth even doubles up as a wine cellar).

It's as cosy and familiar as any parent's home office, centred around a computer balanced on an Ikea workstation, the assembly instructions still tucked under the keyboard, and his spare glasses resting next to the monitor.

Except this home office also happens to have a baby grand piano and a dismantled drum kit shoved in the corner. Oh, and it's here that Astley wrote, sang and recorded his comeback album, 50: A soulful, revealing collection of pop songs that put him back at the top of the charts, 23 years after he quit the music industry.

"I honestly didn't envisage it that way," he says. "When I made 50 I was doing it for me. I thought I'd release it in a very home-grown way, like where you just put it on the internet somehow.

"I wasn't necessarily anticipating going to a record label and trying to get it on the radio. I didn't think that was possible, if I'm honest. I'd given up that a long time ago."

Rick Astley

50 went on to sell more than 300,000 copies, knocking music icon Paul Simon off number one, and easing Astley out of retirement. Not bad for someone who'd spent the preceding decade as the source of an internet prank - "rickrolling" - where users would be tricked into clicking a link for his 1987 pop smash Never Gonna Give You Up.

Like his dancing in the video, the song was awkward and gauche, but it charted all around the world.

Within seven months of its release, Astley was a millionaire, but you always got the sense the material was under-selling his voice.

"I'm not so sure Stock, Aitken and Waterman were focused on finding people who were going to be legendary vocalists," he says, semi-diplomatically.

"As the singer, you came in, you sang the song, you went. And I was okay with that - they were creating their sound, and we were going to be put into that."

"Pop music is very different now," he adds. "If you look at Billie Eilish, she's as much a part of her records as anybody, and I think that was harder in the 80s. You were a bit more a product of the machinery."

Despite what you might think, he's not ashamed of those songs. Hits like Together Forever and Whenever You Need Somebody are "ingrained in my DNA," says Astley, and he's never gonna give up playing them live.

"I'm probably hyper aware of not betraying the audience," he admits. "The people that come to my gigs, as a whole, have got families and lives and all the rest of it, and they're giving up something to come out for the night. You just can't take that for granted."

Not a 'true artist'

So he won't be doing a Bob Dylan and reworking Cry For Help into a croaky folk dirge?

"Well, artists have every right to do whatever they want to do, and he's the epitome of that," says the singer.

"But I've heard so many people who are massive fans of Bob Dylan, who've gone to a gig and don't even know what songs he's doing 'til half way through verse two.

"I always feel obliged to please my audience, if I'm honest. Maybe that means I'm not a 'true artist', and I'm all right with that."

It's a typically modest response. Astley is cautious of ego and hyperbole and showbiz shenanigans, although he recently told Q Magazine "there were a few curtains pulled down and a few oranges thrown at a wall," at the height of his fame.

As he shows us round the studio, he's humble about his musical abilities ("I make simple records") and says he still finds it "weird to meet people you admire".

And while his house is full of expensive artwork and extravagantly feathered light shades, the only award he's ever put on display was for the Lion King soundtrack - on which he was persuaded to sing backing vocals after being discovered "hanging out" at the studio with a friend.

"That's pretty much the only platinum record I've ever had on the wall," he says. "It was in our daughter's bedroom because, obviously, she was a massive fan of that movie... as we all were."

Reimagined hits

Still, you can't hide your light under a bushel forever, so the singer is celebrating his resurgence with a Greatest Hits album that, for the first time, combines both phases of his career. Even so, he's not going to do the hard sell.

"If I'm being brutally honest, doing a 'Best Of' in this day and age is a bit weird, because every piece of music that's ever been recorded is already out there somewhere on a playlist," he says.

To make the package more attractive, he's added a new song, Every One Of Us, alongside a second disc that presents pared back, acoustic versions of his biggest hits.

"I was very aware of not wanting to take the sparkle out of them, because they're very sparkly records," he says.

So the melodies remained intact, even when the arrangements became "lower and darker", as on the pianoforte rework of Never Gonna Give You Up.

He thinks of the new recordings as "alternate universe versions" of the originals - which makes us wonder what sort of album an alternate universe Rick Astley would make?

"I think it would be a rock record, if I'm honest," says the singer - who regularly covers AC/DC's Highway To Hell in his live show; and who's become an occasional guest vocalist at Foo Fighters' gigs.

So could he ever envisage a full collaboration with Dave Grohl and company?

"They're a pretty amazing, ferocious live band and I think anybody in the world would want to make a record with them," he laughs.

"But I think it's nice that we get together sometimes and it's like 'Boom!' and then it just drifts off...

"It's been lots of fun, but I don't want to ever get into a situation where I take that for granted, do you know what I mean?"

Instead, he's content just to pootle around at the back of his house, making simple, heartfelt records that just so happen to sell in the hundreds of thousands.

"I guess I feel really comfortable here, in my own little way," he says, gesturing around the room.

"I've got all my toys here and the things I understand. And if I turn the lights down low enough, and I've got enough time, I can make a record."

Rick Astley's hits collection, The Best Of Me, is out this Friday.

Rick Astley: ‘There’s definitely something in the idea that music saved my life’

The pop star on charming Glastonbury, his difficult childhood and the secret of his long marriage

B orn in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, in 1966, Rick Astley signed a production deal with Stock Aitken Waterman in his late teens, where he also worked as a teaboy and tape operator. His debut single, 1987’s Never Gonna Give You Up, got to No 1 in 25 countries, including the US, and later fuelled the internet phenomenon of Rickrolling, where a person is sent a link to its video that first appears to be something else (to date, the video has 1.4bn views on YouTube). Astley became one of the hits of this year’s Glastonbury with his self-deprecating Pyramid stage solo show and an afternoon set of Smiths covers with the indie band Blossoms . His ninth studio album, Are We There Yet? , is released next month.

How did you become such a sensation at Glastonbury? We got very lucky. Half an hour before my Pyramid stage set there was nobody there – my wife and I thought it was going to be a disaster. But my daughter, Emilie, who was steaming my trousers backstage – she doesn’t usually, I might add – said: “Dad, go and enjoy it like when you’re playing in a pub with the band… Forget about the cameras and everything.” And we did. And then there was the Smiths show later with Blossoms, which was bonkers.

People have been surprised that a pop star like you loved the Smiths. My big brother Mike introduced me to them, and I went a bit nuts about them. The fact they were from my nearby city, where I’d go and buy records, blew my mind – a friend and I stalked [bassist] Andy Rourke around town once, amazed he was real. They still sound so unique, with this very English way of singing that only a few other bands, like Pulp, do well. I couldn’t sing about love in anything but a mid-Atlantic twang.

Johnny Marr tweeted criticism of your original Smiths covers shows with Blossoms in 202 1 . He’s since made up with them in person. Have you ever met? No. We both played Electric Picnic recently and I watched his show – his style of playing and technique is also like nobody else. But I wouldn’t talk to him because it’s really strange and weird. Really, nobody should cover the Smiths, but all this came from a real love of the songs, and a chat I had with Blossoms, where I said: “In another universe, I’m going to be in a Smiths pub covers band”, then them later asking me if I fancied it. And it grew into this mad thing. It turns out lots of people want to go to a full concert of just Smiths songs!

What are your thoughts about Morrissey? I haven’t delved into things he’s said – I don’t feel that I want to, as I idolised him as a kid. I still have a quiff! Maybe I should own [the controversy around him] a bit more, but I’ve separated the art from the artist.

Rick Astley and his wife, Lene Bausager, in March 2023.

The second song in your Glastonbury solo set, 2016 ’s Keep Singing , talked about your tough childhood [Astley’s parents divorced when he was five ; he then lived with his father but estranged himself from him as an adult ]. How do you handle those memories? I’m not sure why it came when it did, but that first line – “When I was a boy/ I saw my daddy crying at the steering wheel” – fell out of me. It’s a true memory. That was a different era, when boys looked up to their dads as strong, silent types, and it frightened me. Joining a choir, and then teenage bands, got me out of the house, and singing made me feel other emotions, like joy. Some people think it’s a bit strong when they hear someone saying music saved my life, but for me there’s definitely something in that.

What’s the best Rick roll you’ve seen? One where they’ve cut up Barack Obama’s speeches to make it look like he’s singing the song. Apparently, the staff in the White House Rickrolled each other – and I assume the president is staff? I hope so!

A video of you dancing to Dua Lipa’s Don’t Start Now while jet-washing your bins went viral during lockdown. Do you have any other hobbies? I’m a bit of a snob with wine these days. Not super-expensive stuff – only at Christmas or something – but I like a Chilean chardonnay or a posh white burgundy. My Danish friends have this joke where they sniff any wine I’ve brought and say “buttery”, as that’s apparently what I do.

Your wife, Lene Bausager , is Danish, and you’ve been together since 198 9. What’s the secret of a long relationship? Respect. I’ve seen friends who’ve lost that, and without it you’re screwed. Obviously I still fancy Lene, but I think the truth and reality of it is I’ve got such respect for who she is as a person. Everything else comes second.

What’s better about the music industry today? Hardly any women used to work in live music crews, but we now have a female lighting director, a female guitar tech, female monitors, which is brilliant. It’s mind-boggling to think there used to be a time when girls were told: “You can’t do those jobs – go to wardrobe, love.”

And worse? The internet can be very brutal for younger artists, but it can also be an amazing tool, where you can post something intimate, from the horse’s mouth, without gatekeepers. Then again, I heard Warners are releasing an AI pop singer, so for some kinds of music it’s probably already over. But at the end of the day we need to be around human beings. I don’t think we’ll ever lose that.

Are We There Yet? is out on 6 October on BMG. Rick Astley tours the UK this autumn and again in 2024

THE MIXTAPE TOUR 2022 DATES

About New Kids On The Block:

New Kids on the Block have sold more than 80 million albums worldwide — including back-to-back international #1 songs, 1988’s Hangin’ Tough and 1990’s Step By Step — and a series of crossover smash R&B, pop hits like “You Got It (The Right Stuff),”  “Cover Girl,” “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time),” “Hangin’ Tough,” “I’ll Be Loving You,” “Step By Step” and “Tonight.” The group which started with humble Boston beginnings grew to shatter concert box office records playing an estimated 200 concerts a year, in sold out stadiums throughout the world.  Since reuniting in 2007, NKOTB have toured consistently to sold out arenas, have sold nearly 4 million tickets and have doubled their crowd sizes. The Boston natives have been bestowed with their very own, “New Kids on the Block Day,” an honor not many can claim, and have played Fenway twice before. The group solidified their place in Hollywood with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame since reuniting and will continue representing Boston on their journey long into the future.

About Salt-N-Pepa

“Push It” — Salt-N-Pepa’s signature party-pumping anthem about getting your grind on — started out meaning one thing and turned out to mean something else. Something bigger. Because in a 35-year-career that took them from Queens to rap royalty, the duo of Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton have pushed it real good as a trailblazing duo that changed the game for women in hip-hop. In the golden age of the genre that they helped put on the music map, they became, quite simply, the First Ladies of Hip-Hop. Now the pioneering pair are living legends who get to see their legacy playing out while they’re very much still making moves. “Over the years, we’ve had every female rapper come up to us and say that we were their role models,” says Salt. “We were their inspiration. We were the reason that they felt like, as women, they could do this in a man’s world. It just gave me another level of appreciation for what we experienced as well as what we accomplished.” And what a lofty list of accomplishments there has been for Salt-N-Pepa. They became the first female rap act to have an album go gold and then platinum. In 2021, Salt-N-Pepa received a Lifetime Achievement Award. 2022 will kick up with Salt-N-Pepa dedicating their Hollywood Walk of Fame star. “I love my Salt-N-Pepa,” says Pepa. “I work hard for it. To this day, I do. It’s a beautiful thing. And we’re still here with timeless music. I’m proud of that.” Reflecting on their legacy, Salt sums it up: “We have the anointing of being the first to do things for women in hip-hop. And I think that it’s important that we have represented women in an inspirational way — as bosses, as women who have persevered through adversity and misogyny in this business, as mothers, as real women who’ve gone through real-life situations and kept it pushing.”

Rick Astley announces headline tour including Manchester date

The tour features a number of massive arena dates in 2024 including one at Manchester’s AO Arena

  • 12:39, 20 JUN 2023

rick astley tour history

Singer Rick Astley has announced details of a UK headline tour and long-awaited studio album. The tour, which starts with two dates at London’s Royal Albert Hall this November, will be followed by massive arena dates in 2024 culminating at Manchester’s AO Arena.

On the tour, he'll be joined by special guests Belinda Carlisle and The Feeling. The news comes as Astley prepares to make his Glastonbury debut this Saturday when he opens the Pyramid Stage. Earlier this month, the singer said he was "in shock" ahead of "Bonkers" show at Worthy Farm, and said it was "an amazing honour and privilege" to be asked to play.

Tickets for his headline tour will be available for pre-sale at 9.30am on Wednesday, June 21, and will remain live until remaining tickets go on general sale from 9.30am on Friday, June 23 via Ticketmaster .

It comes as the 'Never Gonna Give You Up' singer also announces his long awaited ninth studio album ‘Are We There Yet?' which will be released on October 6th. It marks the first release since 2018's 'Beautiful Life', and many of the songs on the album were started in lockdown 2020, but left deliberately unfinished until it was feasible to play them live again.

rick astley tour history

As with ‘50’ and ‘Beautiful Life’, the album was entirely written, recorded and produced by Rick at his home studio in south-west London. He performed almost everything you hear throughout the record, the only exceptions being brass, keyboards and some backing vocals.

It’s been 36 years since the English singer first shot to fame, and he's still winning over new fans - whether he’s performing with Foo Fighters, Take That or Stockport's very own Blossoms, becoming an unlikely social media sensation, or embracing the fandom around his smash hit ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’. And, since returned to number 1 in 2016 with ‘50’, the singer has enjoyed the strongest run of album chart positions of his entire career.

Fans who pre-order the new album by 7pm on June 20 will receive access to a pre-sale for tour tickets. The pre-sale opens at 9.30am on Wednesday, June 21, while general sale goes live on at 9.30am on Friday, June 23. Tickets can be purchased via Ticketmaster .

In addition to the new tour dates and Glastonbury, Astley is also confirmed to play Standon Calling, Kendal Calling, Paloznaki Jazzpiknik in Hungary, Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Carfest South, The Big Feastival, and Radio 2 Live in The Park.

RICK ASTLEY WITH VERY SPECIAL GUESTS SCOUTING FOR GIRLS & THE LOTTERY WINNERS

Pop legend rick astley, known for 80’s tour de force ‘never gonna give you up’, will be bringing his "are we there yet" tour to liverpool this march.

Approx Finish:  10:30pm

With over 40 million record sales worldwide to his name, the Merseyside-born singer has been a household name for more than 30 years.

It’s been 36 years since he first shot to fame, yet Rick Astley is now arguably a more prominent force in popular culture than he ever was. The endearingly boyish 57-year-old is still winning over new fans, whether he’s performing with Foo Fighters, Take That or Blossoms; becoming an unlikely social media sensation; or simply embracing the unending love that greets his era-defining smash ‘ Never Gonna Give You Up ’ which was boosted by its use in an intensely affecting scene in ‘Ted Lasso’. Indeed, since returning to #1 in 2016 with ‘50’, Rick has enjoyed the strongest run of album chart positions of his entire career.

Rick’s Glastonbury sets which made him the talk of the nation: first opening Saturday’s festivities in style with a triumphant performance which mixed crowd-pleasing ‘80s classics alongside some typically classy covers, and then later that day, his latest show with Blossoms as they teamed up for a euphoric, life-affirming set of classic songs by The Smiths.

A towering R&B ballad rich with warm live instrumentation, ‘Never Gonna Stop’ proves that Rick’s sumptuous voice continues to grow in stature. His vocals simmer with feeling as his lyrics explore the belief that a personal human connection is the one thing that can counteract the madness that permeates the world.

‘ Never Gonna Stop ’ follows the album’s lead single ‘ Dippin My Feet ’, which received its first play courtesy of Zoe Ball at Radio 2. The two songs preview a twelve-track record, which was inspired, in part, by the vast open roads that Rick was surrounded by throughout last summer’s huge North American arena tour with New Kids on The Block, Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue.
