Travellers photographic Fjord on hike in Lofoten, Norway

Enter a world of extremes where night looks like day, day looks like night and regardless of the season, the scenery's more than perfect. Leave the Arctic Circle behind and discover northern Norway's captivating sights and long, fabled history. Begin in the capital, Oslo, and make your way to Trondheim, the Viking city home to the Nidaros Cathedral and the remains of St Olav, Norway's patron saint. Explore the rugged, unbelievably picturesque Lofoten Islands by land and water before finishing in Tromso, a vibrant city famed for its cultural offerings despite its relative isolation.

Trip overview

  • Spend three nights in the long-adored Lofoten Islands, a patchwork of fishing villages. Head out to the narrow Trollfjord for a chance to see sea eagles and take in some of the most breathtaking scenery.
  • Visit Trondheim, which translates as 'a good place to live', stroll past the colourful wooden storehouses flanking the river, ride the northernmost tram and enjoy a forest walk and picnic just like the locals do.
  • Gaze at the immense Nidaros Cathedral, an incredible Gothic building that houses the remains of St Olav, the patron saint of Norway.
  • Hop on an e-bike in Tromso, and learn about life hundreds of kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, where the arts and culture scene is thriving despite its isolated, northerly location.
  • Be joined by a locally-based leader who knows all of the hard-to-find spots and can offer the best local advice and connect with your small group of like-minded travellers.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Eden Reforestation Projects. Donations help them provide local employment opportunities and tackle climate change one tree at a time as they restore forests across 10 different countries.
  • The areas visited on this trip can be very cold at night throughout the year, especially at the start and end of the season. Please bring appropriate clothing for adverse weather conditions, including base layers, hat, gloves, scarf, coat and anything else that will keep you cosy.
  • Scandinavia can be an expensive destination in many ways, from museum entrance fees to optional activities, but especially in terms of eating out. Your leader will be able to advise on how to have the best value holiday in Scandinavia.
  • Space is at a premium in Europe and your hotel is no exception. Rooms are often small, but usually the central location makes up for that. For those travelling as a duo, hotels often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together. Occasionally bathrooms will be shared with other guests.
  • We recommend packing light and smart for this trip as you'll be required to carry your own luggage between train stations, ferry ports and hotels, which can include going up and down multiple flights of stairs, and across cobblestones. Train stations often don’t have lifts available.
  • This trip covers a lot of ground and the majority of travel is done by trains, ferries and public buses. It's a good time to sit back, relax and let the scenery roll past your window. Please read the Itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.
  • This itinerary includes several mild activities such as walking, e-biking and RIB boating. Please be aware you can always opt out from those if you do not feel comfortable joining.

Welcome to Norway, where you’ll discover the irresistible charm and eccentricity of Oslo. With so much to see and do in Oslo, we recommend that you arrive a few days before the trip begins, so you can see as much of the city as possible. Tonight why not seek out some traditional Norwegian fare with the group?

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6pm. Please look for a note in the hotel lobby or ask the hotel reception where it will take place. If you're going to be late, please inform the hotel reception. We'll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so please ensure you have all these details to provide to your leader. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend the welcome meeting. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).

Today you'll leave Oslo behind and take the train across the stunning countryside to Trondheim. Trondheim was the first capital of Norway (although some historians would argue that) and remains the city where kings go through their coronation. Its name translates as 'a good place to live', with 'trond' meaning 'a good place' and 'heim' home, and it truly is. The city is situated on the Trondheimsfjord and colourful wooden storehouses flank the Nidelva River that runs through town, while the city's outskirts are surrounded by hilly wilderness. There are some great seafood restaurants in town, so why not venture out with the group for a bite to eat in the evening?

Although a global ban on commercial whaling came into effect in 1986, approximately 1,000 whales are still being killed every year, as Iceland, Norway and Japan ignore the ban. We strive not to visit places that serve whale on any of our trips, however often this is unavoidable and there is a likelihood that you will come across whale meat on a menu or at a market stand.

The forested Bymarka awaits you today – a large nature reserve in Trondheim’s west. Take an easy walk around Lianvatnet, a freshwater lake surrounded by grassy slopes and shady paths. Enjoy a picnic lunch by the lake before free time to explore Bymarka further or return to the centre of Trondheim for sightseeing at leisure. An absolute must-see is the Nidaros Cathedral, an immense Gothic cathedral built from 1070 on, which remains the northernmost Gothic structure in Europe. Quite simply, it's incredible. There are several museums to visit including the Archbishop's Palace, which contains the real Crown Jewels, and the Rockheim Museum, providing a history of Norwegian pop music since the 1950s. In the evening walk over to the nearby station for an overnight train to Bodo, departing just before midnight.

  • Overnight train (1 night)
  • Trondheim - Bymarka forest walk & picnic lunch
  • Trondheim - Ringve Music Museum - NOK150
  • Trondheim - Rockheim National Museum of Popular Music - NOK170
  • Trondheim - Kristiansten Fortress - Free
  • Trondheim - Sverresborg Folk Museum - NOK190

Today's walk will take approximately 1 hour along a flat path.

Norwegian overnight trains are very comfortable, with 2 passengers per cabin, and all bedding provided. Check-out time at our hotel is around noon, so you will store your luggage at reception until tonight's departure to the train station.

In case of unfavourable weather conditions, your leader will offer snacks in local café instead of a picnic.

Wake up just north of the Arctic Circle as we pull into the town of Bodø this morning. There's ample time for you to explore this interesting town until we leave on the afternoon ferry to Svolvaer on the Lofoten Islands. Bodø is a modern city as it was rebuilt after essentially being destroyed by German bombers during WWII. With a dramatic backdrop of rugged ranges, Bodø has the densest population of white-tailed sea eagles in the world, so once you're done exploring why not grab a drink or some food by the quay and take in the vista while these impressive birds circle above (just watch your food). Board the afternoon ferry to the Lofoten Islands. After arriving late in the evening, settle into your comfortable accommodation in the town of Svolvaer.

  • Bodø - Leader-led orientation walk
  • Bodø - Public Bus to Saltstraumen Maelstrom - NOK84

Today's travel time is approximately 3.5 hours.

The Lofoten Islands are known for picturesque fishing villages, pristine nature and, of course, the Midnight Sun. This is viking country, and the beauty of the area is unparalleled and near-impossible to convey in words. Svolvaer, one of the main towns on the islands, relies heavily on fishing and an ever-growing tourism industry as it's used as a primary base to explore the other islands. This morning head out on an excursion by RIB (rigid inflatable boat) to the narrow and steep-sided Trollfjord. On this exhilarating trip around the small islands and skerries of the Raftsundet Strait, you'll also get the chance to see sea eagles, it’s a special experience when one circles just a few metres above your head. The afternoon is free to explore as you wish and there are several optional activities for you to choose from. Perhaps enjoy a sea kayaking trip around Svolvaer's picture-perfect harbour (subject to availability) or hike through the dramatic granite peaks jutting out of the ocean.

  • Svolvær - Trollfjord Cruise & Sea Eagle Safari
  • Svolvær - Sea Kayaking Excursion Day - NOK1095
  • Svolvær - Traditional Fishing Trip - NOK1095
  • Svolvær - Lofoten War Museum - NOK120
  • Svolvær - Bike Hire - NOK450
  • Svolvær - Sea Kayaking Excursion Evening - NOK1195

Today, after breakfast, enjoy a hike to Linken peak (105 m above the sea level). This is a picturesque and easy hike (approximately 2 hours) that offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and the sea. For those who are up for a further challenge and exercise your leader can additionally take you for Tjeldbergtinden hike to enjoy a spectacular view over the sea and fjords and Svolvær city below. Those feeling less energetic can return to Svolvaer after the Linken Peak hike and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.

  • Svolvær - Leader-led hike to Linken Peak

There are plenty of interesting places around Svolvaer that can be reached by public bus – you can travel 1000 years back in time and experience the Viking Age in an active and vibrant environment or wander around fishing village of Henningsvær, famous for craft shops and pleasant atmosphere. Please ask your leader for further recommendations and help with logistics.

Depart the Lofoten Islands on a long but scenic travel day to Tromsø. Start with a local bus ride to Harstad, you'll have some free time here so perhaps take your time for lunch or explore the little town. Later on continue by local ferry past stunning scenery, plenty of fjords and even a maelstrom to Tromsø. Located far above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is northern Norway's major cultural centre thanks to a range of music and arts festivals and an increasing student population courtesy of the University of Tromsø. Enjoy a free evening on arrival in town.

Today's travel time is approximately 8 hours.

This morning, start exploring Tromsø on an e-bike tour and learn about life north of the Arctic Circle. You'll stop at some of the local's favourite city sites like MS Polstjerna, an extremely well-preserved vessel that took part in seal hunting (entry not included), an old farmstead from the 19th century, Prestvannet, the biggest lake on the island and more. Then, explore Tromsø at your leisure. Perhaps learn about the region's fascinating history at the Polar Museum and Tromsø Museum, check out the many art galleries or take a boat cruise in the surrounding waters (the city is actually built on an island). No visit to Tromsø would be complete without a beer at the city's oldest pub, Olhallen, part of the Mack Brewery that is even older than the pub. It was founded by Ludwig Mack, a baker who cared not for the drunkenness of the townsfolk. Mack started brewing beer in 1877 as a less alcoholic alternative to the spirits drunk by most. The brewery is still family-owned and frequented by young and old, traveller and local, student and teacher. Perhaps meet in the evening for an optional final group dinner together.

  • Tromsø - E-bike city tour
  • Tromsø - Tromsø Museum - NOK110
  • Tromsø - The Polar Museum - NOK110
  • Tromsø - Cable Car to Fjellheisen - NOK320

Today’s e-bike tour is approximately 3 hours (15kms) along mostly flat paths. You do need to be moderately competent in riding a bike as good balance and manoeuvring is still required on an e-bike.

The e-bike tour is weather dependent in early season (May). If roads are not ridable because of snow/ice, the group will experience a short snowshoe hike just outside of Tromso, through a forest and slightly hilly terrain with a great view of the city in the background.

Your trip comes to an end today. There are no activities planned for this final day. If you want to extend your stay in Tromsø we are happy to book additional accommodation for you, subject to availability. Please enquire at the time of booking.

  • We strongly advise that you bring debit/bank and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks, as needed.
  • You can use most debit and credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you don’t already have at least one card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in the local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend that each person tips the equivalent of USD$10 to USD$12 per day for your Tour Director, and the equivalent of USD$3 per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of USD$2 per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Most optional excursions can be purchased while you’re on tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for excursions.
  • Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for your card to be charged.
  • Some optional excursions may only be purchased in advance. See page four of your tour itinerary for more information.

Northern Norway Travel Guide

Northern Norway will captivate you from the start, whatever you go there in the summer or winter.

Time is no issue here. Forget all about busy schedules, your neighbour, appointments or obligations. Discover clean air, beautiful light, rough nature beauty and adventures of many kinds.

Where is Northern Norway

The region goes from Helgeland in the south to Kirkenes in the North and has the lowest population in Norway . Outside the coastline, you find the beautiful islands Svalbard , Lofoten and Vesterålen .

The region has fewer than 500,000 people and covers approximately 113 000 km², and the Arctic Circle crosses mainland Norway here at Saltfjellet.

Earlier the easiest way to reach the region was from the sea. These islands are truly worth visiting because of their culture and fantastic natural scenery, but today the region has many airports and international flight connections.

Because of the Gulf Stream, the region has a milder climate than other Arctic regions, and fishing is the core business here.

What and where is the Finnmark

The Finnmark is the northernmost part of continental Europe

Here the Norwegian coastline swings eastward, and the Finnmark has always been an area where East meets West, in culture as well as in nature and geography

The immense wilderness Finnmark area covers 48.000 m2 of the region, and you can travel for hours here without seeing anyone. Travelling to Western Finnmark, you will end in the most northern point of Europe - the North Cape . If you are in Northern Norway and it is the season for the Northern Lights (September- April), the North Cape is recommended to experience this incredible sight.

Going east, you will meet a significant local historical and cultural experience, the local Sami people, whose history goes a long way back. They are the only indigenous people of Nordic countries  recognised and protected under the international conventions of indigenous people. They still keep traditions up, which is a real experience worth visiting.

Tromsø - the main city

The university city Tromsø also called “Paris of the North”, is the most famous and developed town in Northern Norway. Tromsø, surrounded by incredible nature, invites you to adventures all year. They are also very proud to be a popular Northern Lights destination in the Winter. This town offers some museum experience, which tells about the Arctic region. Tromsø gets more and more culinary highlights, and Tromsø provides excellent transport possibilities from the rest of Norway, which makes Tromsø the perfect beginning for a Northern Norway adventure tour.

If you enjoy the beautiful nature around Tromsø, we recommend you visit the Lyngenfjord region.

Northern Light & Midnight Sun

The Northern Lights belt stretches along the coast of Northern Norway from North Cape to Lofoten. Northern Norway is, therefore, the perfect place to observe the natural phenomenons the Midnight Sun and the Northern Lights The Northern Lights are more commonly seen here than anywhere else. Svalbard is where you can see the daytime Northern Lights in mid-winter because it is dark here.

It is good to book a local adventure tour to explore the tremendous Norwegian nature and the world-famous seasonal lights. Here you find attractions such as snowmobiling, dogsledding, hiking, kayaking, biking, and skiing, to mention a few. Local tour operators arrange tours all year round, or you can go by yourself, but we recommend tours with local guides. Through these fantastic adventure tours, you also have the best way to experience the local civilisation.  You can also stay in Kirkenes Ice hotel  - totally made of snow.

Go here by plane

The easiest way to reach Northern Norway is by aeroplane to cities like Tromsø, Bodø or Kirkenes, but it is also possible to cruise along the coastline with  “the Hurtigruten”.

10 Top Destinations in Northern Norway

By Carl Austin · Last updated on February 5, 2024

Enveloped in the magic of the aurora borealis, Northern Norway provides travelers with a unique experience in the Arctic Circle. Its expansive landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and authentic Nordic adventures offer a glimpse into the otherworldly wonders of this far north destination.

Northern Norway is a good place to visit any time of year. It all depends on travelers’ interests. The land of the midnight sun offers 24 hours of daylight during the summer, so travelers can hike or fish whatever the hour. Winters in the far north brings dog sledding through snowy terrains, cross-country skiing and the famous northern lights, colorful waves of light that seemingly dance across the night sky.

Whether exploring stunning fjords, wandering through picturesque fishing villages or watching whales in crystalline waters, Northern Norway deserves a top spot on your travel bucket list.

Map of Northern Norway

Map of Northern Norway

10. Vesteralen

Vesteralen

Vesterålen is an archipelago located north of the Lofoten Islands. It’s very mountainous, with towns situated between the mountains and the fjords. With its white beaches, Vesterålen is a good place to not only see the northern lights but also watch birds and sperm whales, which feed close to the shore.

With its mild winters, the archipelago stretches out into the Atlantic Ocean. Travelers may want to hike the Queen’s Route, a nine-mile marked trail along the beach and across a mountain to a fishing village. The fishing villages are notable for their colorful wooden houses.

9. Hammerfest

Hammerfest

The Vikings may have attacked Great Britain centuries ago, but the British got even in 1809 when they attacked Hammerfest, the most northern city in the world.

The municipality also is known for getting the first electric street lights in Europe and served as a German U-boat base in World War II. It was totally destroyed in the war as part of the Germans’ scorched earth policy.

As the oldest city in northern Norway, Hammerfest offers excellent fishing and wilderness adventures. A key attraction is the museum devoted to Arctic fishing and hunting; it’s also where visitors can join the Polar Bear Club.

8. Kirkenes

Kirkenes

Located in Norway’s far northeast, Kirkenes was also impacted by World War II, serving as a base for the German army and navy, and then taken over by Russia’s Red Army. It is located not too far from the border with Russia and Finland, so travelers will want to visit the Border Area Museum.

The town’s central square is home to a Russian market on the last Thursday of every month. Another top attraction is the Andersgrotta, an underground bunker that houses Kirkenes residents during World War II. Kirkenes is reachable by ship, airport and road.

7. Vega Archipelago

Vega Archipelago

Inhabited since the Stone Age, the Vega Archipelago is a group of 500 islands in the Norwegian Sea. Here, fishermen ply the seas as they have for 1,500 years. They also harvest the down feathers from eider ducks, in an Arctic Circle environment that is inhospitable for life.

Though the environment is harsh, the archipelago is scenic with lighthouses, eider nesting houses and quaint fishing villages. The islands are popular with bird watchers who come to see more than 230 species of birds. Hiking and biking are good ways to explore the islands.

Narvik

Skiers will love Narvik, which offers some of the best alpine and extreme skiing in Norway. What could be more exciting than skiing down a mountain that offers panoramic views of the fjord below!

The fjord offers excellent fishing; the port is ice-free in the winter. Because of this, Narvik was important to both sides in World War II. Visitors can learn more about this at the War Museum.

The Museum Nord affords visitors a chance to learn more about the area and everyday life in Narvik. Art lovers won’t want to miss Skulpturlandscap, where pieces of sculpture can be found around the town.

Alta

Alta, located in Norway’s far north, has many things going for it. It has a subarctic climate that makes it a popular year ‘round travel destination. Winter activities include cross-country skiing and dog sledding, while warmer weather recreation opportunities include hiking, fishing and biking.

It’s not only a good place to view the northern lights but a great place to view ancient rock art. More than 6,000 rock carvings have been discovered since 1973; an open air museum can be found at Jiepmaluota, about three miles from Alta. Staying in an igloo hotel is a good wintertime option here.

Bodø

Sitting just north of the Arctic Circle, Bodø is the second largest town in northern Norway. A section of the central town is referred to as “Swedish town” because Sweden helped build new housing after most of the town was destroyed by World War II bombing.

Situated on a peninsula, Bodø is where the railroad ends and a jumping-off point for the Lofoten Islands. Saltstraumen, known as the world’s strongest tides, are just outside Bodø. It’s also a good place to see northern lights dancing across the night sky. Fishing, boating and kayaking are popular activities. With a strong arts community, it is a good place to buy Norwegian crafts.

3. Nordkapp

Nordkapp

For most of the year, the Nordkapp region has just over 3,000 residents. The population, however, soars by 200,000 in the summer months when travelers come to visit its famous North Cape, the northernmost point in Europe connected with the international road network, and its lighthouse.

The scenery in his remote area isn’t too shabby, either. The region also is known for its large colonies of birds, including puffins. Outdoor adventures abound, from fishing for king crab (and eating it) to riding ATVs over scenic terrain and whale and seal watching. Getting here also is an adventure since it involves going through a 6.9-km (4.3-mile) underwater tunnel.

Tromsø

Located 350 km (217 miles) north of the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is an ideal place to chase the northern lights. Known as the “gateway to the Arctic,” Tromsø is the largest city in northern Norway. It is home to the world’s northernmost botanical garden and golf course.

Tromsø hosts an international film festival and a northern lights festival every year, and has an active nightlife scene. Outdoors enthusiasts are sure to enjoy wilderness recreation opportunities such as hiking, whale watching, kayaking, cross-country skiing and dog sledding across frozen lakes. Tromsø is a beer-drinker’s heaven, with more pubs than any other Norwegian town.

1. Lofoten Islands

Lofoten Islands

The Lofoten Islands are located far above the Arctic Circle in the Norwegian Sea. They may be off the beaten path, but travelers who search them out will be rewarded with unique opportunities for adventure.

Things to do in Lofoten includes kayaking between the islands, fishing and just enjoying the picturesque scenery, including quaint villages with picture-postcard harbors. This wilderness outpost is surrounded by pretty fjords and spectacular mountains, with a landscape that is punctuated with seabirds.

This land of the Vikings boasts the Lofotr Viking Museum and a living museum at Borg that centers around an original Viking longhouse.

What are the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis are a natural phenomenon occurring in the Northern Hemisphere.

When conditions are right, they appear in the night sky displaying dynamic patterns (curtains, shafts, or spirals) of colored lights (mostly green but also red, purple, or more rarely blue).

When conditions are reunited, they appear in the night sky displaying dynamic patterns (curtains, shafts, or spirals) of colored lights (mostly green but also red, purple, or more rarely blue).

Charged particles from the sun, released during solar eruptions, are dragged into the atmosphere and steered towards the poles by the Earth’s magnetic field.

These particles then collide with gases present in the Earth’s upper atmosphere. This collision releases flashes of coloured light that we see as the Northern Lights.

The different colours depend on the gas particles involved at different altitudes: low-lying oxygen causes the most common green colour; red is produced by oxygen higher in the atmosphere whereas blue and purple hues come from nitrogen.

What causes the Northern Lights?

Charged particles from the sun, released during solar eruptions, are dragged into the atmosphere and steered towards the poles by the Earth’s magnetic field.

These particles then collide with gases present in the Earth’s upper atmosphere. This collision releases flashes of coloured light that we see as the Northern Lights.

northern norway tour

Why is Tromsø one of the best places to see the Northern Lights?

Tromsø is one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights because the city is located inside the aurora oval, a doughnut-shaped ring above the Earth’s Geomagnetic North Pole, which extends from Alaska to Russia via Canada, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland.

The advantage when coming to Tromsø to see the Northern Lights is that the temperatures in winter are not that cold: an average of 0°C to -5°C in the city thanks to the Gulf Stream!

There is also a variety of accommodations and attractions to make your stay even more comfortable and fun!

When can you see the Northern Lights in Tromsø, Norway?

You can see the aurora borealis in Tromsø (as well as Narvik and other places in Northern Norway) from September to early April, when the sky is dark enough, usually from 6pm to 1am – with a peak between 10 and 11pm.

Generally speaking, the best time to see the Northern Lights are around the equinoxes – March/April and September/October – as the level of aurora activity is higher.

However, the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, just like the weather, so we can’t know for sure when and where they will occur.

Their appearance and intensity are very much dependent on the sun’s activity.

northern norway tour

How to see the Northern Lights?

It’s important to consider the following elements if you wish to see the Northern Lights:

  • Go outside of the city to avoid any light pollution
  • Choose a night when the sky is as clear as possible
  • Wear warm clothes as it can get cold at night!
  • Go on a Northern Lights excursion to maximize your chances. A professional guide will use their local knowledge and ability to read the weather and aurora forecast to find the best areas to see the Northern Lights on a specific night.

The Northern Lights have fascinated people throughout history and continue to do so. We have developed and produced a series of quality aurora activities for you.

Today, the aurora borealis draws people from all over the world to the Arctic for chases in the hope of seeing this natural phenomenon and taking home a Northern Lights photo.

What people love about Norway Tours

Just finished our tour. Everything went smoothly and the staff at Tour Radar were quick to respond when I had a question while traveling. The hotel rooms in Oslo and Bergen were a bit small. I would recommend the upgrade but the locations and breakfasts in both were excellent. Our favorite hotel, by far, was the Kivnes in Balestrand. Just beautiful and right on the fiord. Thank you Tour Radar!

"Jenn was incredibly educated, lovely, organized, and communicated with everyone on the tour so well. She loves her job, and it truly impacts the experience of the tour. Gabor, who was our driver, was so good at getting us places on time, safely, and navigated the coach on the switchback roads up and down the mountain like a champ!! We covered so much ground and were in the bus more often than I would have anticipated, but we got to see a lot of amazing things and stay in some neat places. The hotels were always in great locations for walking to the towns we were in, and the food was so good. The optional experiences had a mix of things, but overall were a dream. We met some amazing Scandinavians who love their countries and their lives and shared what they had with us. It was a really great experience overall!

Frequently Asked Questions About Norway

If you're thinking of visiting Norway, you might have a few questions. Check our FAQs below for some of the most popular queries. You can also find more detailed information in our Norway Travel Guide and our attractions information pages.

1. Is Norway safe to visit?

It always scores high on lists such as the Global Peace Index , which places Norway above the US and many European countries in terms of safety.

Weather-wise, winter can bring occasional heavy snowfall. Fortunately, Nordic Visitor travel consultants are on call 24/7 in case of any road closures, so pack appropriately and weather won’t be a concern.

2. What is the warmest month in Norway?

Norway’s weather is best between May and September, when it's usually mild and clear. July tends to be the warmest month. In winter, conditions can be pretty cold and this can extend into spring.

Of course, the weather in Scandinavia and the Nordics can be changeable in all seasons. We always advise you take extra light layers to Norway, even in summer. For more information, read our guide on what to pack for Norwegian breaks.

3. What is the best month to go to Norway?

The best time to visit Norway depends on what you want to do. The summer months, June to August, provide longer days and even the famous midnight sun. This makes summertime ideal for hiking, cycling or cruising.

The ‘shoulder season’ of May and September is still pretty warm by Scandinavian standards. Visit then and you can expect fewer tourists and vibrantly coloured scenery.

Wintertime brings longer nights and colder temperatures--sometimes downright chilly! Of course, this means the potential for snow. And in northern Norway, your chances of spotting the gorgeous northern lights increase when days are shorter.

4. Where can we see northern lights in Norway?

The best places to see the northern lights in Norway are Tromsø, Kirkenes and above the Arctic Circle, including the Lofoten islands. Your chances increase depending on your distance from city light pollution and the month you visit.

5. When is the best time to see the northern lights in Norway?

In Norway your chances of seeing the northern lights are greatest between September and April, with October through March being the best months.

Dark nights are essential if you wish to see the northern lights, aka the aurora borealis. This means the summer months of May to August are largely ruled out, as the sun may not set at all in northern areas of Norway during this season.

6. Which is best to tour Norway – by rail, cruise or self-drive?

This is really down to personal preference, but let us give you some pointers.

Self-drive is good because you can travel at your own pace, go where you choose (within reason of course) and stop whenever you like. This is great for photographers, honeymooners and free spirits. Also, parents: self-drive is great for both snack and bathroom breaks.

Rail travel naturally involves a certain commitment to timetables. But taking a train is a very convenient way to travel. Everyone on board is free to enjoy the views along all the scenic routes, as none of your group is at the wheel.

Coastal cruises and ferries give you a unique perspective, admiring the fjords while gliding along them. Again, you have schedules to follow, but everyone can freely enjoy the sights.

Hopefully these tips should give you an idea of what you’d prefer. You can also narrow your choice by using our tour search filters to find your must-see attractions. Many of our packages combine a variety of travel methods, so if you’re not heart-set on driving, you can always contact our travel consultants to give you advice.

7. What is a self-guided tour?

A self-guided tour (or independent tour) is one where you receive an itinerary, travel information and amenities such as accommodation arranged by a travel agent. You will not have a tour group or hired guide, but you will have the added freedom to explore in your own time.

Nordic Visitor has a travel consultant available 24/7 by phone in case something goes amiss, so you’re getting the best of both worlds: the chance to roam as you like, but a person to steer you if you feel lost or unsure.

One popular version of self-guided tours is self-drive , which of course includes car rental as an important amenity. However, compared to Iceland, the railway and ferry networks in Norway provide you with an added variety of self-guided transport options.

8. Can I choose the arrival date?

In most cases, yes. Many of our packages are flexible, with daily departures. The notable exceptions are our guided small group tour packages, which have pre-set start dates.

9. When should I book my flight tickets?

We advise that you book your package first to secure your tour. It may be worth checking potential flights times and prices first, but be aware some airlines and flight booking websites raise their prices between visits, so remember to do research using Private or Incognito mode.

Once your tour is confirmed by email, purchase your flights. If you have missed out on flights, please get in touch with us to change the dates of your tour.

10. What should I pack for my trip?

We always advise our guests to dress sensibly throughout the year. Many of Norway’s attractions are outside and the weather is typically Scandinavian. That’s why we suggest packing clothes you can layer, choosing thinner items for summer and thicker for winter.

You will find more information on what to pack and wear, including summer or winter essentials, in our handy guide . But for a quick idea, consider this packing basics list:

  • Jumper or fleece
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Comfortable walking shoes or boots
  • Umbrella or poncho
  • Binoculars (for cruise-goers)
  • Sun cream and sunglasses (summer)
  • Sleep mask (summer)
  • Foot warmers (winter)

From ice caves to Indigenous reindeer tours: 10 unique experiences to have in Norway

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Norwegians love nature, and being outdoors year-round is a way of life. They believe you can enjoy outdoor activities no matter the weather — as long as you wear the proper clothing. This is especially true in the winter when the temperatures in northern Norway dip into the single digits (or below zero if you’re measuring in Celsius).

From late April through August, the polar Arctic experiences what is called the “midnight sun.” Due to the tilt of the Earth, these places see sunlight 24 hours a day. This phenomenon occurs in most of northern Norway during the summer, which can make it hard to feel tired and go to sleep. On the other hand, it also makes Norway a very unique travel destination.

I was able to experience the midnight sun on a recent trip to Svalbard, Norway — an archipelago that sits at 78 degrees north and is the most northern inhabited year-round settlement on the planet.

Even if you’re not as far north as Svalbard, places like Lofoten and Tromso can have 18 to 24 hours of daylight, depending on the month of the year. The benefit is that you won’t have to worry about having enough daylight hours to fit in all of your activities. Kayaking at 10 p.m.? Hiking at midnight? All possible.

With that outdoor stage set, here’s a selection of unique activities — some of which are seasonal — that you can experience on your next trip to Norway.

Dog sledding

Dog sledding with professional musher Tove Sørensen absolutely makes my list of best activities in Norway.

Tove has owned Tromso Villmarkssenter for the last 30 years. With more than 200 huskies, Tove doesn’t just run dog sledding tours, though. She and her dogs have competed in the Finnmarkslopet (Europe’s longest race) 19 times, and she hopes to be the first woman to finish the race 20 times. She’s also competed in the world’s longest dogsled race, the Iditarod in Alaska.

Guided tours are available, followed by lunch in Husky Cafe, where you can taste Norwegian delicacies and warm up by the fire.

Sami reindeer experience in Tromso

The Indigenous Sami population are reindeer herders. Eight years ago, Johan Isak Turi Oskal started Tromso Arctic Reindeer to educate the public about the Sami culture and reindeer’s importance in the natural environment. His family has been herding reindeer for generations, and he feeds the reindeer in the winter months from November to April. In the summer, they migrate up to the mountains to give birth to their calves.

Tours can include everything from feeding and sledding with reindeer, viewing northern lights and having a campfire cookout while joiking (traditional Sami singing).

Chase the northern lights

While in Norway, you can chase the northern lights on a tour with Tromso Accessible Tours .

They break down barriers for travelers of all abilities and aim to make adventure tours accessible to everyone. Martin Lobert started his tour company during the pandemic to fill a void in the local tourism industry. He purchased a wheelchair-accessible van that can hold up to four wheelchairs and provides “skis” for the wheels. This way, visitors can glide over the snow to reach previously inaccessible areas.

Another vehicle can fit up to 16 passengers total or two wheelchairs plus 12 additional passengers for larger families or groups traveling together.

Experience Norwegian fishing history and culture

You can experience Norwegian fishing history and culture at Full Steam in Tromso . The former fish factory from 1902 sits on the waterfront and has been turned into a restaurant and maritime museum.

Here you can learn about the region’s maritime history, the Sami culture and fishing heritage. You can also enjoy fresh Arctic cod or a warm bowl of bidos — a traditional Sami stew of rich, tender reindeer meat and vegetables such as carrots and potatoes. And yes, it is delicious.

Fly to the northernmost airport in the world

For a unique aviation experience, fly into the northernmost airport in the world, Svalbard Airport (LYR). Norwegian Air offers daily flights from Tromso and Oslo to the northernmost airport in the world for commercial aviation. Flying over the northern Arctic and seeing snow-covered glaciers from above is beautiful.

But flying there is only part of the experience — stay a few nights in the area to enjoy outdoor activities in a breathtaking location.

Electric snowmobiling

Experience an EV snowmobiling adventure on Svalbard with Hurtigruten Adventures, which offers snowmobile tours on electric snowmobiles .

As snowmobiles are the main mode of transport on the island, this is an important step toward reducing emissions and the accompanying noise that disturbs wildlife. On one of these snowmobiling adventures, you could encounter everything from puffins to Arctic reindeer to polar bears.

Take a cross-country skiing tour

Explore the frozen wonderland of the Spitsbergen on skis by taking a half-day cross-country skiing guided tour, or go all in on a four-day adventure . No matter how experienced you are on skis, you’ll want a guide who knows the local area and carries polar bear protection. In fact, it’s required — you cannot venture out of the immediate Longyearbyen settlement without an experienced guide and/or a gun.

Visit an ice cave

Visit a 1,000-year-old ice cave on Svalbard. This unique activity is offered seasonally from February through May. You can be transported in a snowcat — a heavy-duty snow vehicle —  up the mountain to an ice cave high above Longyearbyen. From there, you’ll descend on foot into the glacial opening and through a tight corridor made of ice thousands of years old.

Cruise along the coast

Cruise the Norwegian coastline with Hurtigruten. The line has been offering cruises up the Norwegian coast for more than 150 years; it offers cruises to many ports along the coast and up to Svalbard. From ships of 150 to 619 passengers, you’ll take in the majestic scenery as you travel through the fjords and into small fishing ports. The ships double as supply vessels for smaller communities bringing supplies and medicine to locals.

Drink a beer at the top of the world

Drink an IPA with brewmaster Andreas Hegermann-Riis at the northernmost brewery in the world. Svalbard Brewery was started in 2015 by Robert and Anne Grete Johansen and prides itself on brewing IPAs at the top of the world. Due to the nature of laws in Svalbard and its history as a coal-mining community, there are limits on alcohol consumption and purchases (if local).

Residents are issued a card for any purchases made in Svalbard. Visitors can show their flight tickets to purchase up to 24 beer cans. Tours of the brewery are available, and you can book them online .

No matter what time of year you decide to visit Norway, there’s an adventure and beautiful scenery waiting for you. From medieval fishing villages to the polar Arctic, you’ll find friendly locals who enjoy sharing their culture and love of nature.

SPONSORED:  With states reopening, enjoying a meal from a restaurant no longer just means curbside pickup.

And when you do spend on dining, you should use a credit card that will maximize your rewards and potentially even score special discounts. Thanks to temporary card bonuses and changes due to coronavirus, you may even be able to score a meal at your favorite restaurant for free.

These are the best credit cards for dining out, taking out, and ordering in to maximize every meal purchase.
