30. Vatican City – Vatican City

fairytale travel destinations

This is the smallest country by both population and land area in the world. It has a single city called Vatican City, which is home to around 900 people. However, millions of others visit every year. The Vatican City is a city-state in Europe along with the likes of San Marino and Monaco.

It was established back in 1929 to serve as a sovereign state for Catholic Church. The Vatican has its own post office, radio station, newspaper, television center, and treasury that holds millions of dollars worth of assets from worldwide. The Vatican City has a rich history of art, architecture, culture, and influence as it is home to some great works of Michelangelo. The Vatican is a must-visit for all art lovers and history buffs.

The best time to visit Vatican City would be between May – September when it’s not too cold or hot out. It gets quite crowded during this time, though, so you’ll have to plan accordingly if you want to avoid long lines of sightseers outside museums, churches, monuments, etc.

The city closes at around 18:00-19:00, depending on which month of the year it is, so try visiting before then or after 19:30 to catch some sights while they’re still open. One great spot that opens late is St Peter Basilica, where you can admire Michelangelo’s famous Pieta statue, among many other treasures inside even after hours. You’ll also find plenty of street performers here if that’s your thing, plus numerous souvenir shops where you can purchase everything from movie posters to handmade items made by local artisans. Or perhaps even a star yourself? Be sure not to trip over them, though, as it might cost you a pretty penny.

In addition to world-famous artwork such as Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa or Raphael Sanzio’s Portrait Of A Young Man with Red Cap, there are also plenty of art pieces that will shock you right down to your bones.

That being said, be sure not to wander off too far because, just like at Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft And Wizardry (the Harry Potter series), muggles may get lost here very easily without some help from their guide, which unfortunately is not us.

26. Ryoanji Temple Garden- Kyoto, Japan

fairytale travel destinations

Ryoanji, or the Temple of the Peaceful Dragon, is a Zen Buddhist temple located in northwest Kyoto. Imperial residences and gardens originally occupied the area surrounding Ryoanji during Japan’s Heian period (794-1185). It became part of an important stately home throughout the Edo Period (1603-1867) before becoming its monastery around 1450.

While it does not contain any religious objects inside, this makes for some pretty awesome photo ops! However, if you are looking for more than just beautiful landscapes, then be sure to check out their website, which contains information about special exhibitions that they host on occasion.

If you happen to visit them when one isn’t taking place, I would recommend checking out their Garden of Five Hundred Bamboo, also known as the zen garden. The garden was created during Japan’s Muromachi Period and is composed of just 15 stones, 14 moss-covered boulders, and a little pond. It is so simple yet so beautiful. It truly captures the essence of what it means to be peaceful with yourself in this world we live in today.

25. Palace of Versailles- Versailles, France

fairytale travel destinations

The Palace of Versailles is a palace outside Paris, which was built in 1623. It became the official residence for Louis XIV and remained so until 1793 when France’s monarchy ended after it had been stormed during the French Revolution. In addition to its beauty on the inside, Kremlin boasts beautiful architecture on its exterior, including several colorful towers decorated with golden spires, blue domes shaped like onion-shaped caps known as “kokoshniks,” slender minarets poking up from red brick walls encircling tranquil gardens filled with statuesque fountains and towering bronze sculptures amidst green lawns dotted by centuries-old oak trees.

23. The Great Barrier Reef (Cairns)- Cairns, Australia

fairytale travel destinations

The Great Barrier Reef, also known as the Great Coral Reef, is a huge coral reef system off the coast of Australia. The reef was built over thousands and thousands of years by tiny creatures called coral polyps. It stretches for more than 2000 km (1242 miles) along the northeast Australian coastline near Papua New Guinea to just north of Bundaberg in Queensland.

To give you an idea of how long this is – it would take about six hours to fly non-stop from one end to another! That’s pretty impressive considering that most people can only swim 100 meters or so without needing a break anyway.

22. Stonehenge- Salisbury Plain; England; United Kingdom

fairytale travel destinations

This prehistoric site is most famous for the stone circle built in several stages between 3000 BC and 1600 BC. This is the only example of a circle where stones are still standing in their original position.

18. Edinburgh Castle- Edinburgh, Scotland

fairytale travel destinations

Edinburgh Castle is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Scotland. It sits on an ancient volcano, which makes it even more interesting. The castle has been standing for over 800 years, and you can see ruins from all different eras throughout its history.

Inside the main tower are some amazing museums that show how people lived there long ago and modern-day items like cannons and old suits of armor! This is a great place to visit with friends or family since so many generations have grown up visiting this historic site. If you love castles, then this must be on your list of places to go before you die.

17. New York City- New York, United States

fairytale travel destinations

The Big Apple is a magical place to visit. From the hustle and bustle of Times Square to Central Park’s beautiful trails and waterways, New York City has it all. The food in this city is also amazing! Whether you’re looking for fine dining or quick street eats, there are plenty of options available here. You can even find some great vegan spots scattered around town- if that’s your thing.

There are shows like no other, including Broadway plays such as Hamilton and Tours such as Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises, which take you on an unforgettable journey throughout the island while learning about its history. No matter what time of year you travel here, there will always be something special.

However, if you want to avoid the cold and snow- which I know some of us are prone to do, then Spring is your best bet! With beautiful cherry blossom trees lining streets everywhere, this city becomes even more magical at that time of year.

16. Brasília- Brasília; Brazil

fairytale travel destinations

It is the capital of Brazil. The city is extremely modern, with many high-rises and skyscrapers in Brasília; there are also many green spaces throughout this great city. Some fantastic museums, including the National Museum, which has a vast collection that includes items from Ancient Egypt to Modern Art.

15. Bali- Indonesia

fairytale travel destinations

Bali is a tropical island located in the Indonesian archipelago. There are many attractions to explore, including Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, dedicated to Dewi Danu, who Hindus and Buddhists believe is the goddess of water; this temple has an incredible view overlooking Lake Beratan. Visit Ubud for some cultural experiences, such as learning about their dance performances or visiting one of the local art galleries.

Be sure to visit Tirta Empul Temple, where you can watch locals perform holy spring rituals on behalf of all Balinese people around the country – these ceremonies take place every day at dawn and dusk.

14. Machu Picchu- Peru

fairytale travel destinations

Machu Picchu is an ancient Inca city located in Peru. This excellent site was constructed over 700 years ago and then abandoned during the Spanish conquest of South America, which began in 1532. This makes Machu Picchu one of the most important archaeological sites in all of South America.

There are lots to see, such as temples, terraces for farming, ceremonial baths, and more – it feels like you’re stepping back into time when visiting here.

13. Petra- Jordan

fairytale travel destinations

Petra is a historical and archaeological city that UNESCO has designated as a World Heritage Site; what’s fascinating about its history is how there aren’t any written records describing exactly who built Petra or why they did so.

What we do know, though, is that this city was constructed by carving into the side of a cliff, and it is now considered one of the ‘New Seven Wonders.’ There are many incredible temples to explore as well as tombs, which were carved out from rocks.

12. Giza- Egypt

fairytale travel destinations

Giza is located in central Egypt near Cairo and consists mainly of three large pyramids that have been built for three pharaohs who ruled during ancient times: Khufu (2589–2566 BC), his son Khafre (2558– 2532 BC); and Menkaure(2490 – 2472BC).

All these men wanted their final resting place to reflect how great they had been while alive, so each of their pyramids is the largest in Giza. The Pyramids at Giza are one of Egypt’s most popular tourist attractions, which brings thousands of visitors every year.

11. Easter Island- Chile/Polynesia

fairytale travel destinations

Easter Island lies near Chile and belongs to Polynesia; it also happens to be world-famous for its very large Moai statues carved out from volcanic rock by the Rapa Nui people who once lived here.

It can take around 50 days or more to make a single statue so imagine carving over 900 (80 percent of all existing moais)! Many mysteries surround how these huge figures got here, but they remain incredible pieces of art today – you won’t find anything else like them in the world.

10. Dubai- United Arab Emirates

fairytale travel destinations

Dubai is one of seven emirates that make up the country known as the UAE. It’s well-known for its extravagant skyline. It also happens to be home to some amazing hotels such as The Burj Al Arab; this hotel has become a symbol of modern design throughout Dubai, which was built on an island off Jumeirah Beach.

Another hotel worth visiting here is Atlantis, The Palm – this luxury resort contains waterpark attractions and aquariums containing over 65,000 animals, from marine life to tropical birds. There are many great places to visit when going out, including Wild Wadi Water Park, which features several high-speed rides and slides.

9. Niagara Falls

fairytale travel destinations

It is located between the United States and Canada. The waterfalls are massive, but they only take up about half a mile of land space. They can be seen from both sides and on an aerial view via helicopter or plane ride.

8. Mount Rushmore National Memorial

fairytale travel destinations

Four presidents of the United States have their faces carved into the rock on this mountain: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

Each president’s face is 60 feet high and 90 feet wide! This sculpture was created between 1927-1941 using dynamite to carve out these massive rocks at Mt. Rushmore.

7. The Eiffel Tower – Paris, France

fairytale travel destinations

This is a very famous landmark built in 1889 and has been visited by over 200 million people since then! It is named after its designer, Mr. Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, who also worked on the Statue of Liberty with his company called ‘Compagnie des Establishments Levassor.’

Today you can visit this building and take an elevator ride to the top for some amazing views! That’s not even the best part, though. There are lights installed all around it at night, so when they turn them off, you get to see a beautiful view of just how many lights surround this tower! Maybe try going up during Christmas time because the entire thing is covered in lights, and it’s just absolutely magical.

6. The Grand Canyon – Arizona, United States

fairytale travel destinations

This national park spans over 800 thousand acres across three states: Arizona, Utah, and Nevada. You can hike on many trails to see the views of this natural wonder, but they range from easy to difficult, so make sure you pick one carefully, depending on your skill level!

Truly breathtaking I couldn’t even imagine how old these rocks must be for people to carve out a space like this. Did you know there were fossils found here as well?

Ancient trees used to grow along the canyon floor before erosion occurred over time, leaving behind what we now call; ‘The Grand Canyon. It lives up to its name, though, because it’s truly amazing.

5. The Statue of Liberty – New York, United States

fairytale travel destinations

This is another one that I have been able to visit in person. It was built with copper and steel back in 1886-1886 by Frederic Bartholdi, who also designed the ‘Statue of Arab Unity,’ which stands 210 feet tall! This statue faces Europe as a gift from America. How crazy, right?

There are 305 steps inside this structure leading up to an observation deck, but when you get there, don’t worry about being out of breath because the view makes it worth your while!

You’ll see all five boroughs, including Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Manhattan, and yes, Bronx county, too, if you’re looking closely enough. The statue is located on Liberty Island, and it can be seen from Battery Park, Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken Cove.

4. The Grand Canal – Venice/Italy

fairytale travel destinations

The grand canal runs through the city of Venice. Oh, wait, that’s not right! It starts in Padua and then continues into Venice, where around 150 different bridges span its waterways.

This waterway system spans 405 kilometers, making it the biggest artificial one ever created by any civilization throughout history!

The reason I put this under “magical” places is that it feels like something straight out of a fairytale book or movie with gondolas gliding across its waters while people are at their windows admiring the view below them.

The Grand Canal is not only the biggest waterway in Venice, but it’s also considered to be one of Italy’s greatest architectural marvels alongside Piazza San Marco, Rialto Bridge, Gondola Museum, and much more.

3. Chichen Itza – Mexico

fairytale travel destinations

If you are looking for a place where Mayan/Aztec culture meets today, then this is the location! If you’re familiar with these two ancient civilizations, I’m sure you will know what I mean by this. If not, let me explain!

This structure was built back in 600-900 AD, which isn’t too far from both cultures combined. These pyramids were built mainly as housing structures, while some believed they were used as burial chambers. Chichen Itza is located in the Yucatan Peninsula, making it one of the most visited places throughout Mexico.

2. The Blue Grotto – Capri/Italy

fairytale travel destinations

This sounds like something out of a fairytale book because even though it’s artificial, waterfalls are pretty magical to me since I love being submerged under them every chance I get.

This fall was created by light filtering through an underwater cave entrance, reflecting off the blue waters inside, causing this amazing illuminated view for all who want to experience it.

There are only three different ways tourists can reach this location: via boat, swimming, or diving into the depths below with scuba gear on hand to explore hidden caverns and passageways.

If you choose to swim through the entrance (which I don’t recommend), make sure you do so with caution and only if you are a strong enough swimmer because this current can take you towards other areas in Capri that aren’t safe; for swimming.

1. The Colosseum – Rome/Italy

fairytale travel destinations

This ancient structure was built back in 72 AD by Emperor Vespasian, who wanted it made as a gift for his son Titus… how sweet of him, right?!

It was initially used mainly as a theater where people would watch gladiator battles, wild animal fights, and much more. This building has been damaged many times over the years, including fires and earthquakes, which is why there are two different structures today compared to what it once was.

Recently, in 2017 several restoration efforts were made to improve the site and make it look how it did back then but just bigger! The Colosseum is located on Palatine Hill, making this one of Rome’s most visited sites/attractions for locals and tourists alike.

Not to mention it’s part of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1980 along with Baths Of Caracalla & Circus Maximus, making them a must-see while visiting there too!

Hot air balloons flying over Cappadocia, Turkey

Cappadocia, Turkey

The landscape itself takes on the ambiance of a fairytale in Cappadocia, where rock formations wind out of the surface of the Earth like chimneys. Ancient settlers carved homes into the stone pinnacles, creating distinctive dwellings, ancient churches, and vibrant frescoes that have turned the area into an open-air museum resembling a storybook.

Hot-air balloons often drift through the sky, offering panoramic views of the sprawling Anatolian plains and volcanic peaks textured with unique rock formations shaped by lava flows. The striking combination of medieval Turkish artifacts and luxurious contemporary designs only adds to Cappadocia's unique ambiance.

Colmar at sunset in France

France is one of the best destinations for senior travelers and Colmar is considered one of the most idyllic places to visit in France’s Alsace region, famous for its picturesque half-timbered homes and quiet canals. The heritage and history feature merchants, fishmongers, and wine producers at the heart of the Route des Vins.

The color of the homes once signified the type of business visitors could find, resulting in a vision directly pulled from a storybook. A combination of ornate Renaissance churches, local artisans, and architecture that inspired the likes of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle , Colmar embodies a fairytale ideal.

Ta Prohm Temple in Siem Reap Wat, Cambodia

Ta Prohm Temple in Siem Reap Wat, Cambodia

Siem Reap, Cambodia, is the gateway to the renowned Angkor Wat complex and within the greater compound stands the mesmerizing Ta Prohm Temple, where crumbling ruins meet the roots of aggressive strangler figs. The tremendous rainforest demonstrates its power as it overtakes the remaining stone buildings of the ancient empire.

The impressive sight combines fantastical architecture and legends etched into the walls with the awe-inspiring power of nature. The ambiance can feel like an adventure story as roots press heavily on the walls, at times revealing the serene faces of frozen statues.

Waitomo Caves in New Zealand

Waitomo Caves in New Zealand

The Waitomo Caves in New Zealand can turn the idea of a portal fantasy into a real-life experience. While floating down the subterranean river, lights quietly flicker in the distance, bringing streaks of green and blue to the darkness.

The labyrinth alights from the gentle luster of glowworms endemic to the country and nearly the size of a mosquito. Even though you are winding through the maze-like caverns, it can feel like floating through the galaxy while you learn about the historical and geological significance of the caves.

Around the corner is Hobbiton , one of the best filming locations you can visit on vacation , combining cinematic fantasy with the epic adventure of Waitomo Caves’ natural beauty.

The Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland

The Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland

The Giant’s Causeway is the embodiment of legend, a breathtaking natural wonder that inspired stories. Over 40,000 basalt columns interlock to create raised tracks among the edges of the Northern Ireland coastline, where locals say Finn McCool protected the island from a Scottish giant.

The choice of believing volcanic activity or a battle of giants shaped the coastline is yours. However, regardless of what may have created it, the natural landscape combined with the legend creates an immersive experience in which the story becomes indistinguishable from reality.

Paro Taktsang, known as Tiger's Nest, in Bhutan

Paro Taktsang in Paro Valley, Bhutan

Few storybook destinations have the same splendor and enchanting ambiance as Bhutan’s Paro Takstan, a 17th-century monastery perched above the Paro valley.

Bhutan is a destination combining mystery and majesty, combining traditional Buddhist culture with the carefully planned development of the modern world. A kingdom focused on sustainability and tradition, Paro Takstan acts as the embodiment of the world’s last Shangri-La, as the centuries-old fortress tucked into the edge of the mountain glows with white walls, red trim, and golden towers surrounded by lush valley floor and dramatic mountain peaks.

The monastery remains only accessible by three mountain paths; the first is considered a symbol of positive energy and luck, while the other two trails wind through the popular “hundred thousand fairies’ plateau,” only adding to the fairytale quality of the monastery and greater country.

Rather than a town or city, the Sea of Stars in the Maldives, one of our top 7 destinations for a luxury tropical vacation , can feel like a journey into space on Vaadhoo Island. The surreal storybook experience features glittering lights in the lazy surf of the Indian Ocean.

Bioluminescent phytoplankton emit light to create what resembles starlight reflected in the water. Instead of the childlike feeling of a storybook, visitors can have the ambiance of a romance novel in the perfect tropical setting, accented by the awe-inspiring blue lights flickering from the water.

View of Lake Bled in Slovenia

Lake Bled, Slovenia

Lake Bled in Slovenia is pure magic. While Slovenia is a popular retreat for many Central Europeans, it is one of the top hidden honeymoon gems for North American travelers who miss the natural beauty of the reflective lake, a central castle perched on the dramatic cliff above the water, and the central island populated by a colorful church.

The encircling mountains of the Julian Alps have protected the forest and texture the skyline, while the church at the lake’s center possesses 99 steps leading to the bell. A local myth says if visitors ring the bell three times, their wish will come true, adding to the town’s welcoming storybook ambiance.

One needn’t journey far to find a little magic. From actual castles to charming villages to places inspired by legend, there are plenty of stateside spots that embody that fairytale feeling. If you’re hoping to bring some sparkle, joy, or intrigue into your travels, read on to discover nine fairytale destinations you can visit right here in the U.S.

The Biltmore, North Carolina

fairytale travel destinations

The crown jewel of Asheville , the Biltmore Estate is more akin to a European castle than a southern estate. Since the Gilded Age mansion was built by George and Edith Vanderbilt, it drips with the grandeur of old money royalty. The grounds, which are filled with manicured gardens and tranquil walking trails, are as enchanting as the palace itself. To save the best for last, head to the conservatory at the end of your day. With its glass-roofed building, blooming exotic plants, and model train system, this indoor garden transports you to another world.

Crater Lake, Oregon

fairytale travel destinations

Witnessing Crater Lake in person feels otherworldly, but did you know the famed geological phenomenon is also based in legend? The Klamath people, a Native American tribe of southern Oregon, have maintained a 7,000-year-old oral tradition about the lake’s formation. According to Klamath lore , the lake was created during a battle between two dueling worlds. The legend also claims that to look upon the lake may cause premature death. Of course, many people have witnessed Crater Lake and lived to tell the tale, which is lucky since this is one natural wonder you won't want to miss.

Ice Castles, Utah

fairytale travel destinations

The Ice Castles of Midway, Utah, are the embodiment of a winter wonderland. Visiting these cavernous, handmade icicle forts feels like walking into a fairytale of the Frozen variety — a detail that also makes it family-friendly. Kids will love exploring the frozen crevices and playing on the slippery slides made entirely of ice. Adults will be enchanted by the beauty of the blue icicles and the nighttime show of lights. Regardless of your age, the temperatures will be frosty, so dress appropriately.

Sleepy Hollow, New York

fairytale travel destinations

If you love a good scary story, a visit to Sleepy Hollow, New York , may be in order. Back in 1819, this small village inspired Washington Irving to write his famous short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Although Ichabod Crane and the headless horseman are fictional, the modern-day village of Sleepy Hollow continues to embrace its mythical past. If this sounds up your alley, make your pilgrimage during the fall. From October to November, Philipsburg Manor hosts the Horseman’s Hollow , a weekly event that recreates the ghostly tale and includes a spooky tour of the nearby cemetery.

Boldt Castle, New York

Boldt Castle on a sunny day.

Not only does Boldt Castle look like a fairytale castle, but it’s also based upon a fairytale romance. Built by George C. Boldt for his beloved wife Louise, the castle was meant to be a romantic, summertime paradise on the St. Lawrence River. Sadly, not all fairytales have happy endings — Mrs. Boldt passed away unexpectedly before the house was finished. Mr. Boldt ordered construction to stop and the beautiful estate remained empty for 73 years. On a happier note, the castle was rehabilitated for the public in the 1970s and visitors are allowed to tour the castle and its grounds today.

Pipiwai Trail, Hawaii

fairytale travel destinations

Located in Maui’s Haleakalā National Park, Pipiwai Trail is nothing short of magical. The two-mile trail meanders over footbridges, past waterfalls, and through forestland. Photo opportunities include a massive banyan tree that is straight out of a storybook and the ethereal, bamboo forest that looms into the sky. The trail ends at Waimoku Falls, a 400-foot-high waterfall that cascades over a sheer rock cliff. This hike is sure to make you feel very far from home, in the best way possible.

Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

fairytale travel destinations

If your favorite fairytale involves sandy beaches, warm breezes, and a glass of fine wine, Carmel-by-the-Sea is for you. Located along the coast of central California, this seaside village has heaps of Old World charm. In lieu of street addresses, residential homes go by names like “Nutcracker” and “Rosebud Cottage.”  The downtown’s Tudor-style architecture resembles real-life gingerbread houses, which gives the place a refreshing air of whimsy. Best of all, the residents are welcoming and the village is pet-friendly. It’s the kind of place you may never want to leave.

Sitka, Alaska

fairytale travel destinations

It’s reasonable to say that Alaska, with its soaring mountains and pristine landscapes, feels like a faraway land in a fairytale. But Sitka , a seaside village on Baranof Island, may have an edge over the rest of the state. The village culture is a hodgepodge of Russian, American, and Tlingit tribe traditions, which gives the town its delightfully quirky vibe. From the New Archangel Dancers of the Russian tradition to the Totem Trail , a one-mile forest walk lined with totem poles, the town’s diversity makes it thoroughly enchanting to outsiders.

Skagit Valley, Washington

fairytale travel destinations

If walking through fields of blooming tulips isn’t on your bucket list, it certainly should be. Every April, the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival turns the landscape of northern Washington into a rainbow. Whether or not you’re a flower fanatic , the region’s brilliant blooms and staggering peaks will make you feel like you’ve found the proverbial pot of gold.  If you have the time, the festival hosts plenty of fun events all month long, from bike tours to barbecues to chili cook-offs. Touring popular farms such as RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town should also be in order, but be prepared for large crowds on the weekend.

I've been to 107 countries. Italy and Mexico are great, but these 5 underrated destinations should be on your travel radar.

  • I've visited 107 countries, and I recommend these 5 that can be overlooked for more popular places.
  • Estonia is a European dream, and Namibia is one of my favorite places in the world .
  • Costa Rica is popular but not as packed with tourists as some similarly beautiful places nearby.

Insider Today

This year, travelers are looking to visit more under-the-radar destinations than popular ones — in part to dodge crowds and in part to save money.

Some are specifically looking for "travel dupes," a term for destinations similar to popular spots that are often cheaper with fewer crowds.

And, as someone who's been to 107 countries , I can tell you each region of the world has an often overlooked country that may offer a more rewarding experience than a more well-known place. These more under-the-radar destinations are often less crowded, and your dollar just might go further.

Popular travel destinations like Italy, France, and Mexico are great picks — but consider visiting these alternative options to the more popular choices in the region.

Estonia is a European dream.

fairytale travel destinations

I was immediately captivated by the fairy-tale appearance of Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia.

Walking the cobblestoned streets within the fortress-like walls of the old city transported me back to medieval times.

The city is small enough to explore on foot, and there's plenty to entertain history and architecture enthusiasts. Enjoying a coffee or a beer in the Town Hall Square while people watching is a highlight of my European travels.

Although many people visit Tallinn as a day trip from Helsinki, which is a two-hour ferry ride away, it's worth staying here for a few days and heading into the Estonian countryside. The roads are often quite empty and incredibly peaceful.

I enjoyed Estonia so much that I returned twice more in the 18 months after my first visit.

I've enjoyed visiting Oman, a country in the Middle East.

fairytale travel destinations

Dubai gets a lot of attention for its luxurious travel opportunities , and many know Qatar because it recently hosted the World Cup, but nearby Oman should not be skipped.

After all, Oman's capital, Muscat, provides an excellent gateway to the country.

A stroll along the beautiful Corniche will take you along the water and by the bustling Grand Bazaar. For those who love hikes, there are plenty of options in Oman, including several easily accessible trails in Muscat that offer great city views.

Better still, the amazing Wadi Shab is less than two hours from the capital city and is one of the best hikes I've ever experienced . The trail takes you through narrow gorges and across streams and ends with a surreal swim through incredible caves.

It's an experience so breathtaking I'd expected it to be packed with tourists, but it wasn't when we visited. We only saw a handful of people, which allowed us to really enjoy our trip.

I've seen many parts of Africa, but Namibia may just be my favorite spot.

fairytale travel destinations

I have been fortunate to go on safaris in Kenya , Botswana, and Tanzania, but Namibia is my favorite travel destination of the bunch.

While there, we rented a campervan and did a self-drive tour of the country, allowing us to explore independently. Yet again, we avoided the crowds and the campsites were usually just us and local animals.

Waking up to the sounds of monkeys, elephants, and even lions was a special treat, especially knowing we were safe inside our campervan.

In addition to the wildlife, there's a lot to explore in Namibia, including colossal dunes, which we hiked up and surfed down —undoubtedly the trip highlight for my children.

Sri Lanka showcases a lot of what Asia landscapes have to offer.

fairytale travel destinations

Asia has some beautiful beaches, but Sri Lanka has beaches and tea plantations, mountains, rocks, waterfalls, and more.

We visited Sri Lanka last year and hired a driver and guide who showcased the diverse landscapes of this island country. The food was terrific and extremely cheap — our family of four was fed for less than $10 on most occasions.

The locals I interacted with were incredibly friendly and the island is also small enough to allow for in-depth exploration in a relatively short time.

Costa Rica is an excellent place to visit in Central America.

fairytale travel destinations

Growing up in Texas, my wife has been to Mexico many times since the state shares a border with the country. But to explore somewhere new, smaller, and in the same region, we chose to have our honeymoon in Costa Rica .

Although it's still popular, Costa Rica offers an authentic travel experience as I feel it has yet to be overrun by tourists. Like the other countries on this list, it has a diverse landscape, from white-sand beaches to rainforests to volcanoes, so there's plenty to do.

We also visited during the rainy season, so we took advantage of low crowds , low prices, and often received upgrades — and, as a bonus, it rarely rained!

The Medieval-Themed Restaurant In Florida That’s Straight Out Of A Fairy Tale

Wyatt Johnson

Let me introduce you to a dining experience so magical, it feels like you’ve been whisked away to a land far, far away.

Right here in Florida , a medieval-themed restaurant exists that’s like stepping straight into the pages of a beloved fairy tale.

It’s a place where the fantasy of “happily ever after” comes to life, and you’re invited to the royal banquet.

Welcome to a world where every meal feels like a grand celebration, and you’re the honored guest at the castle’s most illustrious event!

cinderellas royal table 1

Nestled in the heart of a kingdom where dreams come true, Cinderella’s Royal Table offers an enchanting escape from the ordinary.

This isn’t just a meal—it’s a regal rendezvous that starts the moment you cross the drawbridge.

Prepare to be greeted by the warm smiles of the royal court, as they usher you into a grand hall dripping with medieval opulence.

cinderellas royal table 2

Once inside, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale, and let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to eat in a fairy tale?

The stained glass and stone archways are so authentic you’ll half expect a knight to trot by with a turkey leg.

And the food!

It’s a feast fit for royalty but without the need to decree a new tax to afford it.

Your little princes and princesses will be wide-eyed, not just from the magic around them, but from the dessert menu that’s sweeter than a chorus of singing mice.

It’s a family affair where everyone’s treated like nobility, even if your throne at home is a recliner.

cinderellas royal table 3

Every corner of the castle tells a story, with stone archways and majestic stained-glass windows casting a rainbow of colors across the banquet hall.

Here, the clinking of goblets and the soft murmur of awe-struck guests blend into a symphony that sets the stage for a feast fit for royalty.

As you meander through the grand corridors, you can’t help but feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale—minus the pesky dragons, of course.

Kids will love pretending to be pint-sized princes and princesses, while parents can marvel at the craftsmanship.

It’s like a medieval theme park, only the turkey legs are authentically historic and nobody’s wearing mouse ears.

Just watch your step—those knights in shining armor might’ve had one too many meads.

cinderellas royal table 4

Dining at this regal establishment is no ordinary affair.

You’ll be treated to a menu that’s a testament to the royal chefs’ culinary prowess.

Each dish is crafted with the care and precision of a royal decree, ensuring that every bite is a moment to be savored.

From succulent roasted meats to delicate pastries, the flavors are as rich as the tapestries that adorn the walls.

And let me tell you, even the peas here are fit for a king—and I’m not usually a pea guy!

But here, they’re like little emerald jewels that pop in your mouth.

The bread, oh, the bread!

It’s like a warm hug from your grandma if your grandma baked her bread in a royal oven.

Bring your family, bring your appetite, and definitely bring your stretchy pants—you’re going to need them!

cinderellas royal table 5

But what’s a royal feast without a bit of pageantry?

As you indulge in your sumptuous meal, you’ll be graced by the presence of Cinderella herself, along with her esteemed princess friends.

These royal encounters are more than just photo opportunities.

They’re cherished memories in the making, as each princess takes a moment to share her story and bring a touch of her unique magic to your table.

cinderellas royal table 6

And if you’re thinking, “I’m too old for princesses,” let me tell you, you’re never too old to feel like royalty.

The kids will be wide-eyed with wonder, sure, but you’ll be surprised how a twirl and a smile from Belle can make you forget you’re an adult with a mortgage.

It’s like a fairy godmother waved her wand and poof!

The real world disappears with every bite of that chocolate slipper dessert.

So go ahead, laugh, and be merry—after all, isn’t feeling young at heart what vacation’s all about

Children and adults alike will find themselves enchanted by the interactive experiences that unfold throughout the meal.

Whether it’s a gentle twirl with a princess or a lesson in royal etiquette, these moments are sprinkled with the kind of pixie dust that makes this dining experience truly one-of-a-kind.

cinderellas royal table 7

Of course, no castle is complete without its share of treasures.

Be sure to peruse the gift shop, where you can find mementos that capture the essence of your fairy tale dining adventure.

From sparkling tiaras to finely crafted souvenirs, these keepsakes are perfect for remembering the day you dined like royalty.

cinderellas royal table 8

As you bid farewell to the castle and its inhabitants, the magic doesn’t have to end.

The surrounding kingdom is brimming with adventures waiting to be discovered.

Take a stroll through the enchanting gardens, ride a gallant steed on a carousel, or seek out the thrills of a dragon-guarded tower.

The possibilities are as boundless as your imagination.

cinderellas royal table 9

To plan your visit to this storybook dining destination, be sure to check out Cinderella’s Royal Table’s website or Facebook page.

You’ll find all the information you need to make your reservation and prepare for an unforgettable royal banquet.

And if you need a little help finding your way to the castle gates, use this map to guide your carriage to the right spot.

So, are you ready to don your finest attire and join the royal court for an evening of feasting and merriment?

This medieval-themed restaurant in Florida is waiting to welcome you with open arms and a feast that’s truly straight out of a fairy tale.

Have you ever dined in a castle before, or will this be your first royal banquet?

A guide to LGBTQ+ travel in Latin America

With museums, culture, nightlife, family outings and safe spaces to  relax in, Latin America has much to offer LGBTQ+ travellers.

Someone attending a gay pride parade. They have heavy gold eye makeup and flowers covering their head, secured by a pink ribbon tied under their chin.

Latin America is a vast region of over 656 million inhabitants. Stretching across two continents, it’s a storied location where people and cultures from Europe, Africa, the Americas and elsewhere mixed and settled. Spanish and Portuguese, vestiges of two rival superpowers, are the dominant languages. The ancient empires, Aztec, Incan, Mayan and others, still make their presence known — from the archaeological highlights of museums to the living spectacles of carnivals, parades and religious celebrations, like the macabre Day of the Dead and the continued worship of goddesses like Yemanjá brought from the West African coast.

The region’s powerhouse cities are where LGBTQ+ nightlife, culture and political progress are most visible, from the Beaux-Arts streets of Buenos Aires to the sun-kissed Rio de Janeiro, with its spectacular natural setting of mountains and beaches. Indeed, it’s these sandy stretches many tourists come to Latin America for, whether they’re seeking the golden shores of the Caribbean coast or the dramatic, mountainous landscapes that butt against the Pacific, creating conditions that every surfer dreams of.

A person is walking on a busy street, wearing a dress with a long trail in the colors of the pride flag

One of the most thrilling of all Latin American destinations, glamorous Buenos Aires should be the starting point of every Argentine adventure. It’s also one of the world’s leading countries on LGBTQ+ human rights issues — it passed a national same-sex marriage equality law in 2010, five years before the US and three before the UK. Peppered with French Beaux-Arts architecture, Buenos Aires is crisscrossed by grand boulevards and marble-embellished monuments. Visitors will find hundreds of bookshops to explore, the most famous of which, El Ateneo Grand Splendid, is housed in a former theatre. There are cafes, museums and a glittering opera house. To walk along any street, especially the Nueve de Julio, is a dizzying experience.

Where to go at night in Argentina? Buenos Aires is home to some of the best LGBTQ+ nightlife on the continent, and it’s not for the faint hearted. Things don’t get going until past midnight, with locals out long after sunrise. Club Amerika in the Almagro neighbourhood is the city’s largest nightclub and a centre point of LGBTQ+ nightlife. El Lugar Gay is a small, men-only budget hotel located in the historic San Telmo neighbourhood, an area known for its Sunday antiques fair and tango performances.

Where to see Argentinian culture? Though a controversial figure in Argentina, former First Lady Eva Perón, better known as Evita, remains one of the country’s most well-known figures — a Dior-clad gay icon to many LGBTQ+ locals, with stars like Madonna, Patti LuPone and Elaine Paige having portrayed her. Her myth, mystery, legend and wardrobe are explored at Museo Evita in the elegant Palermo neighbourhood.

Where to go with family in Argentina? This nightlife-oriented city has plenty for queer family gaycations, from watching the famous ‘cat ladies’ take care of felines in Recoleta Cemetery to the Abasto neighbourhood’s Museo de los Niños , with educational science activities for children. Argentina’s Patagonian region makes an excellent option for skiing or hiking trips in Bariloche. Those of drinking age will enjoy Mendoza, an important wine region, where the Malbec grape reigns supreme.

Few places in Latin America rival the powerhouse experience that is Brazil. One of the largest countries in the world, this South American nation pulsates with a landscape as diverse as its people, with thousands of miles of beachfront, metropolitan cities, mountains and the Amazon rainforest, to name just a few points of interest. With so much to see and do, it’s hard to choose what to start with first in Brazil, and many LGBTQ+ travellers make repeat visits.

Where to go at night in Brazil? Rio is an effervescent metropolis and former capital where neighbourhoods jostle between mountains and beaches, the giant art deco statue of Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado mountain rising above it all. The highlight of the year is Carnival — the largest such celebration in the world — in February or March, depending on the Easter calendar. It’s all about the beaches here and two are main centres of LGBTQ+ life — Ipanema, especially its Rua Farme de Amoedo gay beach, and the densely urban Copacabana beach, where locals and visitors alike pose for sunset photos with the curvaceous Sugarloaf Mountain in the background. A Brazilian cultural highlight is in Rio’s Flamengo Park, which is home to the Carmen Miranda Museum , celebrating the actress whose oversized fruit-covered headdresses inspired many a drag queen.

A lperiod is wearing a black and red top, with a matching coloured hat and a pride flag coloured umbrella.

Where to explore in Brazil? Visitors will find urban charm in São Paulo, with its contrasting wealthy and impoverished neighbourhoods operating within walking distance of each other. Every May, it hosts a massive gay pride parade with millions of spectators lining Avenida Paulista. Salvador, in the northeastern state of Bahia, is a hotspot for Afro-Brazilian culture. Statues of Yemanjá, mother of orishas (divine spirits) in the Yoruba religion, are everywhere — a nod to the area’s past. A visit to Pelourinho is a highlight for many, its cobblestone streets lined with colourful buildings stretching to stunning vistas.

Where to go with family in Brazil? For LGBTQ+ family travellers with kids, no trip to Brazil is complete without visiting Iguazú Falls, a series of waterfalls in the country’s south where it edges against Argentina and Paraguay. Several times larger than their North American counterpart, legend says Eleanor Roosevelt exclaimed, “Poor Niagara!” upon seeing them.

Visitors to Mexico should start in its glorious capital, filled wih museums and cultural venues like Palacio de Bellas Artes, with its Beaux Arts facade and art deco interior, or the fascinating National Anthropology Museum. Once the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, the city is centred around the massive Zócalo, a square where Spanish buildings were constructed over ancient temples and pyramids.

Where to see the best of Mexican nightlife? Only in Zona Rosa — literally the Pink Zone — can travellers find such a dense concentration of LGBTQ+ nightlife. Near the Angel of Independence monument along Avenida de la Reforma, bars, nightclubs, restaurants and other venues popular with LGBTQ+ tourists and locals abound, along with some of the city’s best hotels.

An outside view of the Frida Kahlo museum in mexico city. The walls are blue whilst the area round the doorways have been painted red, and the doors themselves are green.

Where to see Mexican culture? The Frida Kahlo Museum is located in the bohemian Colonia del Carmen neighbourhood. Known as the Casa Azul, this tribute to the bisexual artist has been open to the public since the late 1950s.

Where to explore nature in Mexico? Mexico’s coastlines offer a wide array of beaches to explore. Cancun and the Riviera Maya on the Yucatán peninsula are among its jewels and the source of much of the country’s income from tourism. Storied Puerto Vallarta, one of Latin America’s most popular LGBTQ+ beach destinations, overlooks the Pacific.

Peru is geographically diverse, with beaches, mountains and the western stretches of the Amazon jungle, making it a must-visit spot for nature-seeking travellers.

Where to see the best of Peruvian nightlife? Peru’s capital, Lima, is a gastronomic paradise, with native cuisine like ceviche, a raw fish and citrus dish, and drinks such as the pisco sour a popular choice. The country’s large and influential Japanese population has also impacted the culture and the cuisine. The main LGBTQ+ area is garden-like district Miraflores, the name of which means ‘look at the flowers’. Sadly, two prominent gay nightlife spots, Lola Bar and Discoteca Legendaris, have recently closed; luckily, a number of new joints are in the works. However, ValeTodo DownTown , a bar central to the strong gay residential presence here, remains open and thriving.

Where to go on an outdoor adventure in Peru? One of the reasons many visitors come to Peru is to trace the country’s ancient Incan roots. Two of the world’s most coveted bucket-list destinations are in Peru: the ancient Andean temple complex Machu Picchu with its stunning views, and Cusco, which was a capital of the Incan Empire. Visitors will come across colonial buildings representing the Spanish conquest built on top of ancient temples, the periods of architecture instantly recognisable via differing stonework. A rickety train traverses a stunning mountain pass to connect Cusco and Machu Pichu, allowing for day trips. More adventurous travellers can hike the various Inca Trails over several days, finding lesser-known historic ruins along the way.

While certain parts of Latin America might be known for a degree of brashness, travellers will   find a more reserved destination when they visit Chile. Santiago, the capital, stretches along the city’s main thoroughfare, Avenida Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins, and sits either side of the Mapocho River.

What to do at nighttime in Chile? The gay heart of Santiago is in the quaint district Barrio Bellavista, much of which dates to the 1920s. Chile is a former Spanish colony, and these influences can be seen in much of the area’s architecture, from the terracotta shingles to the white stucco walls. At night, the district comes alive with music and partying, as locals and visitors head to clubs, restaurants and bars, many with live music. The neighbourhood is dominated by San Cristóbal Hill and its statue of the Virgin Mary, a symbol of the city, connected by a not-always-functioning funicular.

Where to see Chilean culture? Argentina’s Mendoza on the other side of the Andes might be South America’s better known wine region, but Chile has one of the continent’s largest. What makes it even more ideal for visitors to the capital is that there’s no need to fly to a second destination. The wine region surrounds Santiago, most of it within an hour-and-a half drive by car or organised tour to Casablanca Valley, the Maipo region or the Central Valley, where wineries like Concha y Toro create magical elixirs from Carménère, Cabernet Sauvignon and other grapes.
