10 Toughest and Most Difficult Treks in India in 2023 to Push Your Boundaries

We have compiled a list of 10 of the most difficult treks in India. This list excludes trekking peaks such as Kang Yatse II or Stok Kangiri and similar. Before we share the treks, a little to add to your understanding of trekking, if you are still new to it.

What is trekking?

Trekking is becoming an increasingly popular activity in India. While many confuse it with an offbeat journey, it is much more than that! Trekking is a multiple-day activity that can easily be put as a slow-paced adventure sport. It involves travelling to remote areas in partial or total autonomy (that is you are required to carry your means of survival with you). It has its challenges, risks (yes, not to scare you off but many people get injured and even die each year while trekking), and rewards!

Imagine standing on top of a mountain pass or a peak, towering above 18,000 feet, where the world seems conquered and your life choices often flash before you in a moment and the soul rejoices.

It may not be the same as climbing an 8,000-meter peak (there are only 14 of those in the world) but an offbeat, difficult trek can take you to places where hardly living beings tread and at a fraction of the cost compared to climbing a peak. Gone are those days when climbing Everest was an unparalleled feat. People have skied from, done paragliding off the top, and even landed a helicopter on Everest.

There isn’t much left to be accomplished in the Mountaineering world that would put you in the hall of fame and you are more than likely to encounter a human traffic jam on your way to the highest point on the face of the earth (yes, if you don’t believe us check out the below image from 2019).

Traffic Jam on Mount Everest in 2019

Nirmal Purja captured this photograph while returning from the summit of Everest on his quest to climb all 14 above 8,000 meter peaks in the world and he did it in under 7 months (it’s a world record that may never be broken).

Nevertheless, there are plenty of challenging treks in India that any experienced trekker can accomplish with apt preparations, or that many beginners can aspire to! We must warn you though, that while these may not be the same as climbing a towering peak, they are not an easy feat and often are known to cause fatalities (while some are still safer than others).

10 Most Difficult Treks in India:

1. Kalindi Khal Trek:

  • Altitude: 5,940 meters | 19,490 Feet
  • Duration: 15 to 17 Days
  • Distance: 100 KM approx
  • Location: Uttarakhand

Kalindi Khal tops the list of the most difficult treks, and rightly so. One of the highest mountain passes in the world, it is higher in altitude than 4 of the 7 Summits (a list of 7 peaks, highest each, in the 7 continents respectively).

Kalindi Khal connects Gangotri and Badrinath (2 of the 4 “ Char Dham “) and can take well over two weeks to traverse across the landscape, which is a mix of immense snow fields, crevasses, glaciers, moraine fields, and more. It is not a trek for the faint-hearted. Kamet (7,756 meters), Mana (7,272 meters) and Abi Gamin (7,355 meters) are some of the highest peaks you will come across during this trek.

2. Auden’s Col Trek:

  • Altitude: 5,490 meters | 18,010 Feet
  • Duration: 16 to 17 Days
  • Distance: 80 KM approx

Named after John B. Auden, a British surveyor, this pass was first crossed by him in the year 1939. Auden’s Col connects Rudra Valley to the Khatling Valley. It starts from Gangotri and concludes at Kedarnath or vice-versa.

The Route towards Auden Col’s Trek follows a series of basecamp destinations in the order of Nala, Ruduagaira, Gangotri Group, and Auden’s Col.

The descent from Auden’s Col towards the Khatling Glacier is near vertical and challenging, which requires rope fixing. Two days are spent traversing the mighty Khatling glacier when finally the lower altitudes greet us with dense forests.

Masar Tal and Vasuki Tal are two alpine lakes we come across during the beautiful but challenging trek.

3. Traill’s Pass Trek:

  • Altitude: 5,310 meters | 17,421 Feet
  • Duration: 16 to 18 Days
  • Distance: 125 KM approx

George William Traill, the 2nd British Commissioner of Kumaon, crossed this pass in 1830 and thus the naming. Since then only a handful of groups have successfully trekked across this pass. Near vertical rock walls, bottomless deep crevasses, and ridge lines with cornices are some of the challenges this pass throws at you, apart from its apparent remoteness.

Situated at the head of the Pindari Glacier, the locals call this pass as Pindari Kanda. It connects this valley (Pindari) to Lalwan valley. These are among the remotest stretches of Uttarakhand and least explored by travelers. Nanda Devi east base camp lies en-route the trek.

4. Panpatia Col:

  • Altitude: 5,260 meters | 17,257 Feet
  • Duration: 12 Days
  • Distance: 65 KM approx

Imagine standing in a 7 KM long snowfield situated above 5,000 meters, with 4 towering peaks, two of which rising above 7,000 meters, in the background. It feels like you’re standing in Antarctica, only higher than the latter.

Panpatia Col connects Kedarnath and Badrinath and the trek is known for its unparalleled views. Apart from the Chaukhamba massif, we get to view Nilkantha, Balakun, Dhauliganga, and Hathi Parvat peaks up close. Starting at Joshimath, the trek concludes at Ransi near Kedarnath.

5. Gupt Khal via Bhyundar Khal:

  • Altitude: 5,800 meters | 19,030 Feet
  • Duration: 14 Days
  • Distance: 97 KM approx

English Mountaineer and Author Frank Smythe mentioned about Gupt Khal in his book “ Valley of Flowers “, published in 1938, which had put the valley on the world map.

Gupt Khal literally translates to as the “Hidden or Secret Pass” and rightly so. The pass requires traversing another treacherous pass namely the Bhyundar Khal before we finally are able to scale the secret pass crossing. The twin pass crossings require traveling across a series of glaciers namely – Rataban Glacier, Tipra Glacier, Gauri, Bankund, Nilgiri, and Nakthani Glacier.

A number of peaks Nilgiri, Nilkantha, Nilgiri, Rataban, Kamet, Hathi, and Mana are visible.

6. Lamkhaga Pass:

  • Altitude: 5,280 meters | 17,330 Feet
  • Duration: 9 Days
  • Distance: 77 KM approx
  • Location: Uttarakhand & Himachal Pradesh

The trek is a crossover that connects Harsil near Gangotri and Chitkul, a quaint village in Himachal Pradesh, bordering Tibet. The Lamkhaga Pass trek runs close to the LAC and requires an Inner Line Permit. The route is very remote and often challenging. It requires crossing the furious Baspa River which in itself can be fatal in the summer months or early September.

The terrain is hostile and lacks any connectivity with the outside world and each year only a few trekkers attempt this pass. Bad weather is common and can often spell misdeed, as it happened in an accident in October 2021, when adverse weather led to a trekking party getting stuck and 9 trekkers ended up losing their lives.

The trek needs adequate planning and preparation and only experienced trekkers should attempt this pass.

7. Rumtse to Tso Moriri:

  • Altitude: 5,435 meters | 17,830 Feet
  • Duration: 10 to 11 Days
  • Distance: 102 KM approx
  • Location: Ladakh

“Ladakh, the land of high passes”, the phrase can very aptly be explained by the Rumtse to Tso Moriri trek. The over 100 KM long trek takes you through a total of 6 mountain passes higher than 5,000 meters in altitude.

Kyamar La (5,071 meters), Mandalchan La (5,206 meters), Tisaling Shibuk La (5,275 meters), Kayamayuri La (5,416 meters), Kartse La (5,384 meters), Yalung Nyau La (5,435 meters).

Not just the passes but then there are two mesmerizing lakes, the over 7 KM long Tso Kar & finally the much larger Tso Moriri (26 KM), where the trek concludes. The trail is surely going to test your endurance and you would witness a spectacle like no other.

8. Kang La:

  • Altitude: 5,468 meters | 17,940 Feet
  • Distance: 90 KM approx
  • Location: Himachal Pradesh & Ladakh

The natives of the untouched Lahaul valley, used to route this route across Kang La to traverse into Zanskar and onward to Ladakh. A 24 KM trek over the glacier happens to be one of the longest glacier walks you will come across in India during the Kang La trek.

Kang La is replete with a changing landscape with lush green meadows paving the way for the arid mountains of Zanskar, after trekking across glacier fields, crevasses, moraines, glacial lakes, and more. You will be trekking in some of the most hostile and untouched regions of the Western Himalayas during the Kang La trek.

The trek starts at Changut in Lahaul and ends at Padum in Zanskar.

9. Dhumdhar Kandi Pass:

  • Distance: 78 KM approx

James Baillie was the first ever to recognize this pass in the year 1815. The  Dhumdhar Kandi  pass managed to keep its secrets till 1987 when a team from West Bengal crossed it successfully. The pass connects Bhagirathi and Tons valleys, and is a hidden gem which has been trekked rarely.

Base camp of Dhumdhar Kandi with Black Peak in far right

It shares its base with the Black Peak (Kalanag – 6,387 meters), which is the highest peak in this region. The mighty Swargarohini Massif too can be attempted from this area. The terrain is difficult to trek across and rockfall areas are common, which can cause unwanted accidents. The trek starts from Taluka in Har Ki Dun region and end at Harsil towards Gangotri.

10. Parang La:

  • Altitude: 5,580 meters | 18,307 Feet
  • Distance: 126 KM approx
  • Location: Spiti in Himachal Pradesh & Ladakh

Starting at Chicham/Kibber in Spiti, the Parang La trek takes you across a mighty pass, and an astounding stretch where you get to walk along the Tso Moriri lake, for 2 full days. Arid mountains, vast grazing lands, remnants of fossils from millions of years ago, and trails untouched by humans, make up this unique trek.

The trek includes long walks on all days and is the longest in our current list in terms of distance covered.

Other Dangerous Treks:

While we have tried our best to try to narrow down the list from across a vast number of offbeat and challenging treks, there are still many more difficult treks which need a mention, the least.

There are a number of trekking peaks a few of which rise above 20,000 feet and make up for very difficult treks. We will cover the list of those treks in our next blog.

Pin Parvati Pass Trek:

  • Altitude: 5,300 meters | 17,390 Feet
  • Duration: 11 to 12 Days
  • Location: Himachal Pradesh

The Pin Parvati Pass is a unique crossover trek that connects the Pin Valley in Spiti and the Parvati Valley, with the trek starting at Bhuntar. The route follows the popular Kheerganga trek before it enters the untouched landscape. The trekking route is part of the Pin Valley National Park, in the greater Himalayan range.

The trek concludes at the remote village of Mud known for its picturesque dry mountain landscape with a foreground of lush green fields. It is a remote and challenging trek which is known for its spectacular views.

Sin La Pass Trek:

  • Altitude: 5,495 meters | 18,030 Feet
  • Distance: 75 KM approx

A staggering altitude of 5,495 meters, Sin La connects Bidang in Darma Valley to Jolingkong Lake in the Kuthi Yankti Valley. It was used by the Bhotiyas of Uttarakhand to traverse to Tibet as part of their trade route. Adi Kailash can be viewed from this route on a clear day.

Shrikhand Mahadev Trek

About shrikhand mahadev.

Shrikhand Mahadev Trek takes you to one of the most sacred adobes of Lord Shiva. There is a 75 feet high Shiva lingam situated at the top of the peak. There are no trees or any plants and the area is mostly covered in heavy snow throughout the year. The peak is accessible only for 20-30 days in the the months of June and July.  During this time, the local authorities conduct and maintain the official Shrikhand Yatra.

Shrikhand Mahadev trek is considered as one of the most difficult pilgrimages in India, because of the difficult terrain and extreme weather conditions. Hundreds of devotees perform this trek each year.  We have tried to provide the best possible information on this trek in this post. Please go through the available Photo Gallery and other details below.

Shrikhand mahadev yatra registration, s registration for the shrikhand mahadev yatra necessary .

During the Yatra period, registration is mandatory.

If you do this trek before Yatra period, you should enter your name in a register maintained by the Sadhus at Bharatinala. The official registration is not available during this period.

Why register for this trek ?

Registration is recommended for this trek as it helps track the number of pilgrims going up and thus necessary steps can be taken to support them in case of an emergency.

How do I register for the Shrikhand Mahadev Trek ?

Online registration is not available for this trek. You have to register with the authorities at Singhad. The authorities set up camps at Singhad during the yatra period.

Is a medical certificate necessary for Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra ?

Yes a medical fitness certificate is necessary to perform this trek during the yatra period. Some devotees do skip the registration, however it is not recommended. This is a tough and dangerous trek and you should be physically and mentally strong to complete it. Also, there is a low oxygen level at the top, and some pilgrims do fall ill due to lack of oxygen. Therefore, please keep it in mind while planning for the Shrikhand Mahadev Trek.

Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra Route

Although there are other routes towards Shrikhand Mahadev, however the official Yatra starts from Jaon Village. Starting from the first, we have listed the main stops during this trek below.

Jaon Village

Jaon Village is where the motorable road for this trek ends. Jaun village is 170 Kms from Shimla via Bagipul and Nirmand. From Jaon, you’ll have to walk on a Jungle trail towards Singhad.

Distance from Jaun to Singhad is approx 3 Kms. Singhad is the last village on the Shrikhand Mahadev Trek. A Shiva temple with a beautiful idol of Lord Shiva is situated in Singhad Village. The authorities setup camps in Singhad for registration purposes. Starting from Singhad till Bhimdwar, you’ll find various camps setup offering free food/ bhandara to the pilgrims.

Bharatinala

The next stoppage is Bharatinala  which is 3 Kms from Singhad. At Bharatinala, there is an Ashram of Juna Akhada where the the Sadhus maintain the record of the Yatris. They also offer accommodation and food to the pilgrims.

Please refill your water bottles in Bharatinala as there is no source of water before Kali top. However some dhabas on the way might offer some water to you if available.

From Bharatinala, the steep climb also known as Danda Dhar starts. Danda Dhar goes all the way till Kali Top. The next stop would be Thachru, however there is a spot before Thachru where people have camps setup for trekkers.

Thachru is approx 5 Kms from Bharatinala. Thachru is the last place where you’ll see trees in this trek. After Thachru, the tree line starts decreasing and totally ends when you reach Kali top.

Kali Top is 3 kms from Thachru and it is the highest point in the area. Named after goddess Kali, it has a small stone temple dedicated to goddess Kali. You’ll get the best view of the Shrikhand peak and Shivalingam from Kali Top. The whole view from here is totally mesmerizing and makes you realize the grandness of the Himalayas. Although there are some camps at Kali top, but most trekkers prefer to continue further for overnight stay either at Bhim tal, Kunsha or Bhim Dwar if time allows. However, if you reach Kalitop in the evening, we would recommend you to stay overnight here only.

Bhim Tal or Bhim Talai

From Kali top, there is a trail downwards to Bhimtalai which is 2 kms approx. It is said that Bhim (Bheema) created the small pond situated here, hence the name Bhim taal. The next stop would be Kunsha which is another 2 Kms from here. There are 4 small glaciers formed on water streams, on the way till Bhimdwar which you have to cross very carefully.

Kunsha is unarguably one of the most beautiful spots during this trek till now. The distance between Bhimtal to Kunsha is 2 Kms approx. This place is extremely beautiful and very photogenic. After Kunsha, you’ll have to walk another 3 Kms towards Bhim Dwar. The trail between Kunsha to Bhimdwar is narrow but easy to walk.

Bhimdwar is the place which is said to be inhabited by the Pandavas for some period. Bhim Dwar is treated as a base camp for Shrikhand trek, as there is no accommodation options as you go up further except Parvati Bagh.

Parvati Bagh

Distance from Parvati Bagh to Bhimdwar distance is around 2 kms and it also has a few accommodation options during the Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra. However stay at Bhimtal is preferred by most pilgrims as Parvati Bagh has a very few camps available. If one does not find accommodation there, then the only option left would be to come down 2 kms to Bhimdwar. It has happened to people many time, thus plan accordingly.

Nain Sarovar Lake

Now after Parvati Bagh, the next waypoint is the Nain Sarovar Lake. The distance from Parvati Bagh to Nain Sarovar lake is around 2 kms. This  lake is considered as a very holy lake and some people even take a dip in the icy cold water of the Nain Sarovar lake for blessings. From Nain Sarovar the terrain gets tougher and the trail gets narrow. This is where the trek gets toughest. Shrikhand Mahadev Peak is approx 6 kms from here.

Just before the Shrikhand Mahadev Peak, you’ll find huge boulders known as Bhim Bahi. There are very distinct marks on these stones, which are said to be written by Bhim while he was building a stairway to heaven.

The Shrikhand Mahadev Peak

After crossing the Bhim Bahi, you’ll finally reach the magnificent Shrikhand Mahadev Peak. The view from up here would be absolutely amazing if the weather allows you to see anything. People usually take off their shoes out of respect, when approaching the 75 feet Shiva Lingam(approx) to take blessings. The trek downhill is equally challenging if not more.

Please note that if you have any respiratory problems, please consult a doctor before attempting to do this trek. This is because the oxygen levels are low at the top. Due to this, it is also recommended to start the climb downwards as soon as possible and not to stay at the top for long.

Hope, it will be helpful for the fellow travelers during their trek. Please feel free to contact us for any additional information about the trek. May your journey be safe and successful by the grace of Lord Shiva!

From the gorgeous frozen Zanskar river trek in Ladakh to gazing at the beauty of Mt Kanchenjunga on the GoechaLa trail, here are the toughest treks every adventure seeking soul needs to bookmark for future travel.

1. Chadar trek, Ladakh

A Google search for the most challenging trek in India redirects to the Chadar Trek, and rightly so. Located at an altitude of 11,400 feet, the beautiful trail over the frozen Zanskar river in Ladakh is the most awaited treks in the months of January and February.

Starting from the base camp in Chilling, the total distance of the trek is 62 km and it requires six hours of walking every day to reach the desired destination. What makes it the most difficult trek of all is the bone-chilling weather that ranges from -5 to -25 degrees celsius. Trekkers start preparing for the trip at least a month prior. It’s a six day-long trek and the jaw-dropping views of the frozen river makes it all worth it.

2. Stok Kangri Trek, Ladakh

Making it to the highest mountain in the Stok Range of the Himalayas is what every trekker dreams of. Located at an altitude of 20,190 feet in Hemis National Park, Ladakh, Stok Kangri lends a spectacular view of the Zanskar and Indus Valley.

What makes this eight day-long trek difficult is not the altitude but the lack of oxygen which leads to nausea, fatigue and headaches. However, the best time to plan the trek ranges from June to September.

3. Pin Parvati Pass Trek, Himachal Pradesh

Parvati valley is known to be the most adventurous and picturesque trekking destinations in Himachal Pradesh. The 110 km-long trail takes you through the dense forests of the Great Himalayan National Park, Kheerganga, Mantalai and Pin Parvati Pass, which is the most challenging part of the trek, especially during monsoon. But then it’s an experience trekkers don’t want to miss out on. The 11-day trek starts from Bursheni and the best time to visit ranges from July to September.

4. Goecha La Trek, Sikkim

This trek starting from Yuksom in Sikkim lets you witness the most beautiful and unexplored part of the Himalayas. The rough terrains take you through the dense rhododendron forests allowing you to witness the spellbinding beauty of Mt Kanchenjunga from the closest. The beautiful Samiti Lake located on the bottom of Onglakthang valley is another major highlight of the trek. This 11-day-long trek is best suited for the months of April, May, September and October.

5. Auden’s Col Trek, Uttarakhand

View this post on Instagram

Uttarakhand’s dream trek starts from Gangotri and trails through the Nala Camp and the dense forests of Garhwal. Located at an altitude of 18,010 feet, it’s one of the highest mountain peaks in the Garhwal Himalayas.

It connects the Rudragaira and Bhilangana valleys, and offers some of the most stunning views of the Rudugaira Peak, Auden Col Pass and Jogin Peak. It’s the steep ascents that make this 13 day-long trek one of the toughest of all. The best time to visit ranges from June to October.

History and Mythology of Rudranath Temple-

After Mahabharata Pandava’s went to their journey to Himalayas to visit ‘ Mahadev’ (lord Shiva)  to was of their sins because they killed their brothers, Guru’s, and many more.

Lord Shiva was not happy with the killings during Mahabharata and the dishonest tricks that were used during Mahabharata in kurukshetra. So he decided to disguise and turn himself into in  ‘nandi’  (bull).

When Bheem came to know that Lord Shiva has turned himself into nandi (bull) he came looking for him. When lord Shiva saw Bheem coming he then disappeared into the ground but it is said that Bheem catches him, after that the different parts of his body appeared in different places and today those places are  Kedarnath, Madhamaheshwar, Tunganath, Rudranath and kalpeshwar .

Why Rudranath Is Famous:

  • Rudranath is mainly famous  because it is one of the   panchkedars . Devotees comes from across the globe here, because it is one of the five kedars and where else you would see the face of lord Shiva. Here, the face of lord shiva is worshipped.
  • Difficult trek  is also one of the main reasons for the trekkers. It is the most difficult trek among the Panchkedars.
  • Kunds-  kunds around rudranath temple is one of the main attractions for tourists and are considered sacred aroud the globe. NARAD KUND, SARASWATI KUND, CHANDRA KUND, SURYA KUND, TARA KUND are the kunds near Rudranath temple.
  • The Scenic Beauty-  the scenic beauty of this place attracts people around the globe. You can see the nanda devoi peak, trishul peak and chaukhamba peak from the rudranath temple.
  • The bugyals-  there are maily three types of bugyal you’ll see here starting from pung bugyal , then after that comes lyuti bugyal and at last comes panar bugyal.  Bugyals  are alpine pasture lands in higher elevation range like Himalayas between 3300mt-4000mt.

ENTRY TYPE-

-The forest department also takes 50-100rupess from the outsiders before going for a trek.

–  Kedarnath forest division charges 100 rupees for per plastic item taken inside, like packets of biscuits, noodles etc. It is done to reduce the usage of plastic inside the forest, and after returning from forest the tourists have to show the plastics and wrappers to retrive the amount. If they failed to do so then they will be levived rupees 5000 as the penalty.

Best Time To Visit Rudranath Temple-

Best time to visit Rudranath temple is during summers.

The gate of the temple opens from 19 th  may and it remains open for 6 months till early to mid of November. The doors or kapaat of the temple closes after Diwali.

In winters the door/kapaat of the temple are closed and it is not safe also to trek in winters since the mountains are covered in snow and due to the steep and difficult trek it is not safe to trek on those conditions.

But we would suggest you that the month of October is the best time to visit Rudranath temple. Just after the rainy season and a moth before closing of the doors of the temple the beauty is something beyond words can explain.

How To Reach Rudranath Temple-

We will show you the route from the nearest airport, railway station from rudranath and the bus route from delhi.

By Air:  The nearest airport from Rudranath is Jolly Grant that is near Rishikesh. After that you can rent/book taxi/auto to Rishikesh and from there follow the instructions given below in bus section:

By Train:  The nearest railway station from Rudranath is Rishikesh/Haridwar/Dehradun. From there you can take/rent a bus/taxi/auto to Rishikesh or you can directly take a bus from Dehradun to Gopeshwar mandal. Then book a taxi to sagar village from where the trek to Rudranath starts.

You can easily find a bus to gopeshwar mandal from railway station but you’ll have to reach there before 5 or 6 a.m. If you can’t find a bus then you should book a taxi locals call it  ‘tata sumo’ . If you are directly booking a taxi then you can ask the driver to drop you directly to ‘sagar’ village that is hardly 10,15 minutes away from gopeshwar mandal if you have a vehicle.

NOTE-  We would recommend you to rent a hotel/dharamshala in sagar village and start the trek next morning after you reach the village since it is a long and steep trek.

  • The usual Rudranath trek starts from Sagar village and it is a trek of approx 18kms -22kms. From the usual route you will find the shops in every 2-3kms and the last shop you’ll find before the stop is at ‘Panar bugyal’. After that, the next shop you’ll find is directly at the temple that is nearly 8-10 km away from ‘Panar Bugyal’. The first BUGYAL that comes in route to the temple is ‘PUNG BUGYAL’ after that the next bugyal that comes is ‘LYUTI BUGYAL’ and at last comes the ‘PANAR BUGYAL’ that is the last stop where you will find something to eat. After that the next stop is directly at the temple.
  • The another route of trek starts from  Gopeshwar  to  ‘anusuya mata mandir’  that is nearly 19km away from gopeshwar mandal and another 20 km from anusuya mata mandir to Rudranath temple.

The length and the difficulty is what, that makes the Rudranath trek the most difficult trek of Panchkedars.

Gopeshwar, July 5 (PTI) A pilgrim from Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut, who had come to visit the Rudranath temple in Uttarakhand, died after falling into a ditch while trekking down a steep slope on his way back.

The District Disaster Management Centre said the incident happened on Wednesday evening.

Omender Singh (48), a resident of Kankar Kheda in Meerut, had come to visit the Rudranath temple. On his way back from the temple, he fell 200 metres down into a ditch, it said.

A relief and rescue team was rushed to the site but Singh had died on the spot.

The spot was far away from the nearest road and it took the rescuers hours to retrieve the body late on Wednesday night.

The trek to the Rudranath temple, which is part of the Panch Kedar range, is considered one of the most difficult treks in Uttarakhand.

A ‘darshan’ of the temple can be had only after traversing a distance of about 20 km, of which more than half is a steep climb. The road to the temple passes through dangerous hills at many places. PTI COR ALM ALM MNK MNK

How did a religious gathering in India turn into a deadly stampede that killed 121?

Relatives mourn the death of stampede victims

Overcrowding and a lack of exits contributed to a stampede that killed at least 121 people in northern India, one of the deadliest such accidents in recent years.

Police said more than three times the permitted number of people attended the event and most of the victims were women.

What's next?

Police have launched a search for the event's organisers, whose whereabouts were not known.

At least 121 people have died in a stampede after a large religious gathering in northern India, one of the deadliest such accidents in recent years.

The stampede among thousands of attendees is believed to have begun as the event, led by a Hindu guru known locally as Bhole Baba, was ending.

A boy, who was injured in a stampede at a religious gathering, reacts as he is brought to a hospital

What happened?

Authorities believe massive overcrowding, insufficient exits, bad weather and other factors may have contributed to the high death toll.

The event was held in a large tent in a village in Hathras district, located in Uttar Pradesh state, amid sweltering heat and high humidity.

"Initial reports suggest that the closed enclosure of the tent led to suffocation, causing discomfort and panic among attendees," said senior police officer Shalabh Mathur.

Poor planning was another issue. Some 250,000 people turned up for the event, which was permitted for 80,000 and held in a muddy field.

As the preacher descended from the stage, officials said, devotees surged forward to touch him, causing chaos as volunteers struggled to intervene.

An initial police report suggested thousands of people then thronged toward the exits.

Many slipped on the muddy ground, falling and being crushed by the crowds.

Witnesses described further chaos as more devotees tried to follow the preacher as he left in his car.

His security personnel pushed the crowd back, causing more people to fall, according to officials.

Most of the dead were women.

Who is Bhole Baba?

The Hindu guru's name is Suraj Pal, but he goes by Bhole Baba.

He is a Dalit, a group at the bottom of India's caste pyramid, and many of his followers are also from lower castes, female and poor.

While not a household name nationally, he enjoys a large following in Uttar Pradesh and nearby states.

Now in his 60s, he's known for dressing in all white, often sporting mirrored aviator sunglasses.

People stand near a poster of preacher Surajpal, also known as 'Bhole Baba' stuck on a board, at the site of the stampede

Bhole runs two ashrams in Uttar Pradesh and holds weekly religious gatherings, known as satsangs, where he often talks about leading a simple and virtuous life.

Police have launched a search for Bhole and other organisers, whose whereabouts were not known.

Police registered a case of culpable homicide against two organisers, but excluded the preacher.

AP Singh, an attorney representing the preacher, blamed some "anti-social elements" for disrupting the peace and creating chaos, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

Mr Singh said Bhole had never asked anyone to touch his feet nor did he give anyone the dust touched by his feet, referring to reports in local media which cited these as reasons for the devotees running towards him.

"The preacher is ready to cooperate with state authorities and the police," local media quoted Mr Singh as saying in an interview.

The state's Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said a judicial inquiry would be conducted into the incident, besides the police investigation, to determine who was responsible.

How common are stampedes in India?

Deadly crowd surges are fairly common in India, especially during religious festivals where huge gatherings, sometimes in the millions, are held often in cramped areas with shoddy infrastructure and few safety measures.

There have been a number of stampedes in India over the past two decades. Many religious events are organised without adequate preparations, crowd control measures or even prior permission, said Sanjay Srivastava, a disaster management expert.

Police officers walk at the site where believers had gathered for a Hindu religious congregation.

"Often such functions are held so regularly that sometimes police don't check whether guidelines are being followed," he said.

The event on Tuesday violated general safety norms, Mr Srivastava added.

"The function was held in a makeshift tent without ensuring multiple exit routes. Typically, there should be eight to 10 well-marked exits opening into open areas," he said.

State official Ashish Kumar said there were insufficient exits in the vast tent. It's not clear how many there were.

One of the last major stampedes occurred in 2013, when pilgrims visiting a temple for a popular Hindu festival in central Madhya Pradesh state trampled each other amid fears that a bridge would collapse.

At least 115 were crushed to death or died in the river.
