A National Guard patrol car full of soldiers stands guard outside the local headquarters of the federal attorney general's office, in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz state, Mexico, Friday, Aug. 30, 2019. Mexico's drug war appears to be back, and it may be worse this time around than in the bloody years of the government's 2006-2012 offensive against drug cartels. That was evident this week in Coatzacoalcos, an oil industry city in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz where residents say gangs have been fighting over turf and extorting business owners with threats of violence. 25 best countries for americans to visit.

In this piece, we will take a look at the 25 best countries for Americans to visit. For more countries, head on over to 5 Best Countries for Americans to Visit .

2022 has marked a significant shift in global macroeconomics. The Russian invasion of Ukraine coupled with rising inflation in the expansionary aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic has had a significant impact on the U.S. dollar. This is because the Federal Reserve's rapid interest rate hikes that have aimed to combat inflation have also strengthened the U.S. dollar. At the same time, demand for dollars peaked in 2022 as global recessionary fears grew due to the economic shock from the Ukraine war. The dollar's strength lead to the greenback making significant gains last year against major currencies such as the British Pound, the Japanese Yen, the Australian Dollar, and the Euro.

For instance, the Pound closed in 2021 at 1.35 dollars to a pound and within the year slipped to 1.21 for a ten percent drop. The Australian dollar closed in 2021 at 0.73 USD and dropped to 0.68 USD at the end of the year, marking a 7% drop. Finally, the Euro also dropped by 7% during the year, but all three currencies dipped to their record lows in the middle of the fourth quarter of 2022 as the Fed delivered consecutive (and massive) 75 basis point (0.75%) interest rate hikes.

A stronger U.S. dollar comes with a mixed bag of results for Americans. For exporters, it's bad news as they are able to earn fewer dollars for the same units of the foreign country's currency, and for importers, it's a blessing since they can buy more goods with the same amount of dollars. For the everyday consumer, it makes buying imports cheaper, and at the same time, it's also good news for tourists as they are able to spend freely in foreign countries. As an illustration of the benefits offered to tourists, the dollar's strength last year led to a flood of American tourists to Europe. According to the president of an online travel agency, Americans flocked to France, London, Ireland, and Italy in droves to make use of the stronger dollar. At the same time, many also started booking their travel plans in advance as well, to lock in the lower rates.

At the same time, the stronger dollar not only led to a growth in tourism to Europe but also saw Americans snap up prime London real estate. The British Pound crashed in October last year after former British premier Elizabeth Truss's well intentioned but ill timed pivot to growth spooked bond investors who sold British debt and caused the pound to plummet to its record low and a hair's breadth away from the ignominious parity with the dollar. However, even before the crash, America's wealthiest were making full use of Britain's woes. According to data compiled by a real estate broker, American purchases of London real estate shot up to represent 14.5% of the total purchases during the first half of 2022. This was more than double the 6% that it had stood at during the final half of 2021. However, the rich patiently waited for the worst, as soon after the pound's crash, the big guns came out and properties as expensive as £50 million changed hands. To add to this, while overall American transactions counted for 14.5% of the market when we narrow down our focus to the top end properties, these transactions represented more than 30% of the total share.

Finally, in terms of monetary value, the global travel and tourism market created 25% of global jobs directly and indirectly, as well as accounting for 10% of the global gross domestic product (GDP), before the coronavirus pandemic according to research from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). However, the pandemic saw the industry suffer from a $4.9 trillion loss, but its share of the global GDP increased to 20%.

As to the situation on the ground, the tourism industry is continuing to recover from the pandemic but nevertheless having to face rising inflationary pressures. On this front, InterContinental Hotels Group PLC (NYSE: IHG )'s chief executive officer Mr. Keith Barr shared during the firm's latest earnings call :

The 2022 was another year of strong trading and our teams continue to make significant enhancements across our enterprise platform performance and future growth. We delivered on our strategy, working closely with our hotel owners to grow their business and capture demand. I was particularly pleased that the strong momentum continued in the second half of the year, leading to RevPAR and profitability exceeding 2019 levels. Looking at our performance around the world. The Americas region surpassed 2019 levels in the second quarter with RevPAR up 9% by the fourth quarter. Our EMEAA region also saw excellent sequential improvement following the listing of travel restrictions and caught up with the Americas to also be 9% ahead in Q4. Trading in Greater China was more difficult due to the COVID restrictions still in place throughout most of 2022. Following the recent listing of these, the inherent desire to travel, both for business and leisure has been clear to see. During the Chinese New Year break in January, 300 million trips were made in China, representing close to 90% of 2019 levels. In terms of system size, our adjusted net growth was 4.3%, with gross growth of 5.6%. We opened 269 hotels and signed 467 leading to our pipeline increasing 4% year-on-year and being equivalent to 31% of today’s system size.

With these details in mind, let's take a look at some of the best countries for Americans to visit.

There are several reasons why Costa Rica is such a popular destination. For one, the country offers tons of outdoor adventure options like zip-lining and surfing. There’s also an active volcano with the opportunity to explore old lava tubes and walk on still-hot lava among other things.

Another attraction to the country of Costa Rica is its beaches! Though they are not the most pristine, they offer a lot of fun activities like dolphin and whale-watching tours, surfing, and more.

The Bahamas

The Bahamas is a popular destination for tourism and American tourists because it does not have extreme seasons. The country also has beautiful beaches, delicious food, and crystal clear water.

Last year I went to The Bahamas. The islands have a tropical climate which is perfect for vacationing. I also got to go snorkeling with some dolphins, which were both exciting and fascinating to observe beneath the water. The food there is also really good, so I recommend going to find local restaurants away from your report a few times during your stay.

Aruba is an island in the Caribbean sea, just off the coast of Venezuela. It’s a small island in the Caribbean. It has a population of just under 100,000 people.

It was previously a part of the Netherlands Antilles country.

Aruba’s natural beauty is unparalleled. There are over 250 miles of unspoiled beaches surrounded by palm trees and turquoise water.

The country also has lots of great restaurants, tours, and hotels to spend your nights at if you run out of things to do during the day.

The people are welcoming and it’s a great place for families with young children as well as romantic getaways for couples.

One thing that I really enjoy about Aruba is that they boast some of the world’s most incredible beaches. The beaches of Aruba are some of the whitest and most beautiful that you’ll find anywhere else on earth. There are more than 150 different beaches to choose from all over the island!

In terms of food, there’s no shortage to enjoy! You can take your pick between all sorts of tropical fruits, delicious seafood dishes, or even American eats like burgers and hot dogs if you’re feeling like something different! The restaurants are diverse and you’re sure to find something that will suit your tastes!

And there’s no shortage of entertainment either. It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for a little local culture, some more familiar American-style nightlife, or just want to relax on the beach – Aruba has it all!

Aruba is also known for its beautiful architecture. There are many historic buildings and homes that you can visit, great glimpses of what life was like centuries ago.

I’ve stayed at the Crane Beach condo in Aruba. It’s on the beach and has a view of the ocean. I also really liked staying at the Divi Aruba resort. It’s right down on the water with a great swimming pool. I appreciated being able to walk around barefoot all day long, too! The third-place I liked was called Divi Village Golf & Beach Resort by the sea. It’s on the West Coast of Aruba with a great stretch of white sand beaches. There’s also a small golf course, too.

There are more than 80 hotels in Aruba that offer unique accommodations and amenities. The island is known for its mild climate throughout the year, making it an ideal destination for travelers who want to escape harsh winter temperatures or find relief from summer heat without

Aruba’s capital city of Oranjestad is filled with modern amenities and historic attractions, making it an ideal destination for tourists who enjoy learning about the island’s natural beauty while also experiencing the modern comforts of home. Most major resorts are located close to the city, and most offer shuttles for transportation between hotels and attractions.

Palm Beach is Aruba’s most popular resort area due to its white sands and clear, calm waters. Many hotels in Palm Beach feature private beaches where guests can swim or sunbathe. Visitors can also enjoy the area’s nightlife, which centers around Palm Beach’s cafes and casinos.

Switzerland also has many outdoor activities that will keep you busy during your visit. You can go hunting or fishing in places like Switzerland without any worry that it is against any laws.

Switzerland is home to 6 of Europe’s 7 natural lakes. There are 83 Swiss lakes in total. The Alps form the border with Italy to the south, France to the west and Germany to the northeast.

The country’s highest point is Dufourspitze at 4,634 meters (15,203 feet). Many other high mountains throughout Switzerland attract hikers and skiers as well.

The only landlocked country in Western Europe is also known for its banking system because it has not nationalized its banks. It has one of the world’s most powerful economies and one of the six original G8 members. It’s called a globalization powerhouse due to foreign direct investment and exports, generating $1.7 trillion of output.

Switzerland is a great place to visit and learn about its history. Rackhofen Castle ruins date back to the 14th century and there are many museums throughout the country, including Musee des Beaux-Arts at Art Association in Lausanne that has works from Monet, Pissarro and Renoir.

One of the most popular things to do in Switzerland is skiing. The Alps are the perfect place for skiing because the mountain peaks are at different elevations which means that there are different slopes for beginners, intermediates, professionals, and experts.

You can go hiking in Switzerland. Some amazing views await you during your hike. You can take a train or walk through an old mining town like Montreux. The rail station there is located right near the town which makes it convenient for hikers to stop off for lunch or dinner before their long hike back up the mountain.

Switzerland also has castles! One of the most famous ones is Chillon Castle. You might recognize it from Lord Byron’s poem “Prisoner of Chillon”. It is located on Lake Geneva and has been standing for over 1000 years! It’s a great place to visit if you want to get a taste of Switzerland’s rich history.

Some really great places in Switzerland that I think you should visit include:

Zurich – This city offers a wide selection of cultural and historical attractions. You will be able to explore past and present cultures, enjoy delicious cuisine, discover incredible art, or attend an opera. It’s the perfect place for an all-around cultural experience.

Zermatt – This small village is a haven for hikers and mountain climbers. You can enjoy unparalleled views of the Matterhorn, weather permitting! I love Zermatt’s picturesque atmosphere.

Lucerne – This beautiful city provides endless opportunities to explore culture and history. The wooden clock tower offers panoramic views of the city–incredible during sunrise or sunset.

Geneva – If seeing the city from the water is your thing then this is the place for you. Experience incredible views of Geneva’s famous Jet d’Eau while cruising along Lake Geneva.

Bern – Bern has won itself a reputation as being one of Europe’s most picturesque towns. Whether you are interested in architecture, shopping or just exploring the town on foot, Bern will not disappoint!

Hopefully, this has given you lots of ideas on what you can do when planning your next trip to Switzerland.

Israel is a very popular travel destination for people of all faiths. It would be wise to learn about the culture beforehand, but it is an incredibly welcoming place.

Israel is known for being an innovative country that combines modern life with traditional values that are still prevalent in many parts of the world.

Israel’s diverse landscapes have something for everyone no matter what they are looking for. There are mountains, deserts, beaches, and forests.

Israel is a very interesting place for many reasons. First and foremost, it’s the birthplace of Judaism. It’s also bordered by Jordan and Syria which adds to the excitement of your visit there. You can go to Jerusalem, Masada or Tel Aviv depending on what you want from your trip.

The idea of going in person to learn more about Jerusalem – the city of gold where many people believe that Jesus walked – is on so many people’s bucket lists.

It’s also one of the oldest cities in the world and has a lot of history behind it. You’ll find tons of biblical sites to visit, especially around the Western Wall.

We all know Masada for killing off all their married men to prevent them from being defeated by the Romans. It’s also an ancient city that was built by King Herod around 30 BC. Check it out if you’re interested in ancient architecture or military conflicts.

You can’t go to Israel without visiting Tel Aviv, although this is one of the youngest cities in the world – founded in 1909! That doesn’t mean it’s not exciting or interesting – there are tons of great beaches to enjoy and you’ll find a lot of young people out and about.

Hiking in the Mediterranean Hills is something that I would recommend to anyone who goes to Israel.

There are so many hikes around, all you have to do is look it up on the internet or talk to somebody about your interests. One of my favorite hikes is in Sharon National Park where you can see the Sharon Coastal Plain while walking on a trail.

Another favorite hike of mine is in Mitzpe Ramon where you can see deserts, mountains, and the Dead Sea while walking on an easy trail.

Jerusalem has a lot to offer any tourist. Not only is it one of the holiest cities in the world, but it also contains amazing art all over the place! My favorite place to go for art is the Israel Museum which has an enormous collection of Biblical Art and artifacts.

Another great activity is taking a guided tour around Yemin Moshe, which was built by a wealthy Arab-Jew who lived in Jerusalem.

One thing that I’ve always wanted to do is take a tour of the Dead Sea and float in it. The Dead Sea is also really salty and apparently, there are actual health benefits to floating in salty water for a long time.

Another thing I wanted to do while visiting Israel was hiking, but I ended up going on a car ride instead. I got this feeling that the landscapes were lush and full of life because it wasn’t too hot or cold when I went.

And of course, you should visit the Western Wall, which is an ancient wall in Jerusalem.

The Western Wall, also known as the “Wailing Wall”, is one of the most sacred sites for the Jewish people in the world. It forms the western support wall to the Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is visited and recited by tens of thousands every year to worship and pray there.

There are so many reasons to visit Isreal. I have just covered a few of them.

Dominican Republic

It’s easy to see why the Dominican Republic is a popular travel destination for Americans. Below are a few of my favorite things about the DR.

1. The weather is perfect all year long – in the dead of winter daytime temperatures hover around 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius), which means you can have a nice beach vacation any time of the year.

2. There are more than 2,000 miles of stunning coastline to explore, including world-class resorts and luxury homes just minutes from the ocean.

3. You’ll experience delicious cuisine at every turn – restaurants in Santo Domingo offer popular dishes like mofongo, fried plantains, and heaping piles of seafood paella while peppering menus with Spanish imports like morcilla (blood sausage), and bacalao (salt cod).

The Dominican Republic has a rich cultural heritage, going back to the pre-Columbian era with its history as a European colony.

The Dominican Republic has been visited by pirates, conquistadors, New World explorers, traders from Europe and Asia, and naval expeditions from Europe during its long colonial period.

The culture in this country is very artistic because of the rich history of the Caribbean.

The best time of year to visit the DR is during their dry season, which typically lasts from December through April, or June through November. This is perfect if you are looking for sunny days with less rain !

Some of the country’s best hotels in the Dominican Republic are located right on one of its many beaches! The all-inclusives offer a great escape from the rush and bustle of American life. You will have your own personal staff that will take care of everything while you relax by their pool or enjoy a drink at the bar!

If you’re looking for a unique destination, the Dominican Republic may be the perfect place for you. It’s very safe and hospitable.

It’s nice as well because it feels smaller and more exclusive and you can go to those places without feeling like there are going to be tons of people. The Dominican Republic gets fewer tourists than other places in the Caribbean – it’s really nice because, depending on where you spend your time, you can feel like you have this beautiful destination to yourself.

By Condé Nast Traveller

Bled Island and the pilgrimage church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary reflecting on the lake Bled

The survey for the 2024 Readers' Choice Awards is open, vote now for your favourite places, hotels, airports, cruise lines, travel fixers and more.

It is a fact unspoken that one of the most essential ingredients in the recipe for a memorable holiday is the people we meet along the way. Friendly locals who extend a warm welcome and are keen to help you fall in love with their home just as they have can turn an average escape into an unforgettable one. Here, as voted for by you in our Readers' Choice Awards 2023, are the  friendliest  countries across Europe – where an open-armed reception is always on the itinerary.

Fort Lovrijenac on a sunny day. Location Dubrovnik Dalmatia Croatia Europe

10. Croatia. Score 91.78

Once the summer haven of the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s elite, thanks to its cosmopolitan cities and over 1,000 dreamy islands,  Croatia  is still a favourite destination. People come here for the pristine beaches, shimmering lakes, ancient ruins, Michelin-starred restaurants, underwater wineries, vibrant nightlife and a genuinely genial atmosphere.

Where to stay:   Maslina Resort  in Hvar for its standout spa, which offers a variety of healing modalities, from traditional massage to vibrational healing, sound therapy and herbal tonics. In Rovinj,  Grand Park Hotel  has a fantastic location, slotted between a beach and a pine forest, with the marina and the town centre just a short walk away. See more of our  favourite Croatia hotels here .

Valletta the Capital City of Malta in early morning

9. Malta. Score 91.92

Malta  is small enough to explore and big enough to get lost in. The ocean is never over 20 minutes away, and nothing feels too far. There's a lot packed into this charming archipelago, from ancient temples, dramatic cliffs and secret swimming coves to historic winding streets, traditional shops and a bubbling creative scene.

Where to stay: Ursula Street is a favourite balconied address to walk down in Valletta, with several small palazzo hotels; try 66 Saint Paul’s , which has a rooftop pool. We also like Domus Zamittello , a restored baroque masterpiece with painted coffered ceilings by the bombed-out opera house.

Denmark

8. Denmark. Score 91.93

The former heart of the Viking empire,  Denmark  is considered a middleman between the cultural and geographical differences of Northern Europe and Scandinavia. Those who visit will get a feel for both as they explore ancient burial sites (around 86,000 burial mounds have been registered in the country, many dating back to the Bronze Ages) beside glittering cities, such as the colourful waterfront streets of Aalborg, known for its concerts at the futuristic House of Music.

Where to stay: Foodies will like the Parisian-inspired Coco Hotel , created by the Copenhagen Food Collective (Cofoco), in the capital's trendy Vesterbro neighbourhood. Former factory Manon Les Suites is also full of character, having been reconfigured into a riad-style spot with a tropical courtyard garden surrounding an indoor pool.

Portugal

7. Portugal. Score 92.32

Portugal 's location on the Atlantic Ocean has made it a must-visit for those seeking authentic maritime life and culture. With long stretches of golden coast, villages among rice fields and dunes, and 16th- to 19th-century architecture, it's a country with much to recommend it, not least the famous salt cod and grilled sardine dishes that have become synonymous with the region. Big-name cities like  Lisbon  and  Porto  attract big crowds, though a clutch of smaller settlements – the enchanting hamlet of Marvão with its 13th-century walls and Amarante in the north – each merit a visit in their own right.

Where to stay: The Iven , in  Lisbon , made our list of  the best new hotels in the world  this year. For a live-like-a-local experience, Melides' boutique  Vermelho Hotel  has just 13 rooms, each paying homage to Spanish and  Alentejo  traditional design. For all our recommendations, here's our guide to the  best hotels in Portugal .

6. Norway. Score 92.50

Home to some of the most beautiful spots in the world, Norway is a quiet Nordic gem packed with natural wonders and picturesque seaside towns. Whether you want to see the Northern Lights, hike to the Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), tackle a road trip on the sensational Atlantic Ocean Road or explore the contemporary delights of Oslo, Norwegians will proudly show you the wonders of their country.

Where to stay: In Oslo, secluded 18th-century townhouse Villa Inkognito has a low-key home-away-from-home vibe replete with Art Nouveau splendour. For the best chance to witness the Northern lights on your trip, several of our top Airbnbs for Aurora spotting are based in Norway, with cosy spots in Bodø and Sortland starting from just £40 per night.

Iceland

5. Iceland. Score 92.91

Unique to anywhere else on earth,  Iceland  is a country still shrouded in mystery, a concoction of lava rocks, imposing mountainscapes and magical black beaches. But the dramatic landscape, with its lung-cleansing, crop air, is only one of the reasons why this area of the world so enchants visitors. Go whale watching (more than 20 species circle the island), swim in the natural pools and try out the foodie scene, packed full of fresh seafood and fermented goodies, all while being embraced by the welcoming local spirit.

Where to stay: Take refuge from the elements at Hotel Rangá in the south, where you're greeted with a 10-foot taxidermy of Hrammur the polar bear upon entry, along with views over twin glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. In Reykjavik, there's the fashionable 101 Hotel , befitting a town full of creatives, and it'd be remiss not to mention the upscale Retreat , attached to the Blue Lagoon, with its sleek minimalist interiors and luxuriant spa. See all our best Iceland hotels here .

Edinburgh City Scene

4. Scotland. Score 93.97

Oh, bonnie Scotland . Striking moorland, misty mountains, epic castles, fresh seafood, mouth-numbing whisky, dramatic beaches, atmospheric islands and general good cheer can all be found here. Whether you drink a dram in a cosy bar in  Glasgow  or meet a fellow hiker halfway up a cliff, chances are you'll have a lovely blether.

Where to stay: At  Kinloch Lodge  on the Isle of Skye, you can stay in the centuries-old home of the McDonald clan, still under family control.  The Fife Arms  is another former hunting lodge in Braemar, not far from Balmoral Castle. For unrivalled views of Loch Broom – and a seven-course supper-tasting menu – the  Dipping Lugger  in Ullapool is terrific. We've gathered  the best hotels in Scotland here .

Old city of Bucharest Romania

3. Romania. Score 94.00

Romania is an eerie and captivating country of Gothic churches, medieval castles and picturesque towns, surrounded by dramatic landscapes, including the Carpathian Mountains and the Black Sea. But although it's a place of folklore and an inescapable link to Dracula with  Transylvania , unlike the spooky Count, the people here are friendly and open.

Where to stay: The honey-hued  Matca  is one of Europe's most exciting new hotel openings this year, offering up bright rooms and villas within the hilltops of the Transylvanian Forest, along with a restaurant serving local produce.

2. Slovenia. Score 94.18

Set between Austria,  Italy  and  Croatia , Slovenia is so tiny you could skip over it, which would be a mistake. It's a visually stunning land of alpine forests, Disney-like castles, sparkling lakes, baroque architecture, dramatic caves and natural splendour – mixed with a nation proud of its green credentials and sustainable lifestyles, ready to welcome visitors to share in their verdant bounty.

Where to stay: Hotel Grad Otočec is like something out of a fairytale – a grand castle hotel that blends Gothic and Renaissance architecture, set within an island in the middle of River Krka.

Ireland

1. Ireland. Score 94.50

Countless global reports have continually dubbed the people of  Ireland  as some of the friendliest and most welcoming to visitors in the world, and our readers feel the same, voting it into the top spot for the friendliest countries in Europe once again. Of course, the breweries and lively atmosphere of Dublin are a must, but plenty of more natural discoveries will be made here for those willing to venture a little further. For example, Giant's Causeway in County Antrim is an area of around 40,000 interlocking basalt columns – formed during an ancient volcanic eruption – and was named the fourth greatest natural wonder in the United Kingdom. Then there's the Cliffs of Moher in the south, rising to 214 metres in places and offering visitors vistas across to the Aran Islands in Galway Bay, the Maumturks, and Twelve Pins mountain ranges to the north.

Where to stay: The Shelbourne  is one of Dublin’s most storied landmarks for those after a spell in the capital. Outdoorsy types should book into  Ashford Castle  in Co Mayo, where clay-pigeon shooting, fishing, horse-riding and falconry are the order of the day. Stay up to date:, sustainable development.

In 2016, the travel and tourism industry contributed an astonishing $7.6 trillion to the global economy – that’s 10.2% of global GDP. It also generated a total of 292 million jobs, which means that 1 in 10 people work in the sector. The numbers of international arrivals are just as impressive, reaching 1.2 billion in 2016, 46 million more than in 2015.

What’s even more incredible is that these figures are expected to continue growing in the coming decade. And this has the potential to help countries generate economic growth, create jobs and enable national and regional development.

But which countries are in the best position to make the most of all these opportunities? Every two years, the World Economic Forum sets out to answer that question by ranking the travel and tourism competitiveness of 136 countries. These are the top 10 according to our latest index .

These countries have successfully created an enabling environment for travel and tourism to thrive by facilitating travel to their nation, promoting their natural and cultural heritage, and ensuring rewarding and hopefully unforgettable experience for their visitors.

Unfortunately, there is no magic bullet and no one-size fits all approach that other countries not in this top 10 list can attempt to copy. Some countries will have more difficulty growing their tourism industry as a result of their economic or geopolitical context, while others may not have been blessed with unique natural and cultural resources.

That said, this year’s report shows that many countries around the world have been able to make policy changes that have made them more competitive. And from those observations, we’ve been able to draw together four interesting points that all countries might learn from.

While historically the majority of travel was North-North, this reality is changing. Outbound travel from Africa, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific is expected to grow exponentially in the coming decade.

Developing and emerging markets are not only becoming larger source markets, but they are also improving their travel and tourism competitiveness in order to position themselves as more attractive destinations. In the 2017 edition of the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report , we found that 12 of the top 15 most improved countries are developing and emerging markets. This growth is here to stay. South-South tourism is on the rise, and this trend will continue as these countries improve their competitiveness and develop their travel and tourism sectors.

While isolationist and protectionist rhetoric is on the front page of the newspapers, the travel and tourism industry, unlike global trade, remains relatively unharmed to date.

Governments around the world realize that for the most part, the barriers to travel are not making people and countries safer, but are hindering economic growth, job creation and tolerance between countries. In 2016, destinations worldwide required 58% of the world’s population to obtain a visa prior to departure – a significant improvement from 2008, when 77% of the world’s population was made to apply for a traditional visa. In effect, the great majority (approximately 85%) of countries have reduced, at least partially, the burden of obtaining a tourism visa in the past two years.

To continue supporting the expected growth in international travel in the coming decades, we need to continue improving policy frameworks and innovate the way people move across international borders.

Today, digital has become a basic requirement to being competitive, even in travel and tourism. Countries not integrating technology and enhancing their connectivity will be left behind. In recent years, we have seen a significant increase in the telecommunications infrastructure across countries. And ICT readiness correlates directly to the amount of value that tourism can generate.

However, the meaning of being “ICT ready” continues to evolve rapidly, causing many organizations, companies and countries to spend time rethinking their “service delivery”, integrating constant connectivity into the experience.

At the same time, the growing number of connected citizens around the world provides a unique opportunity for customers benefit from the inclusive nature of the travel and tourism industry. In effect, the internet has become a great mechanism to enable locals and travellers to connect directly without relying on intermediaries.

Despite growing global awareness on the importance of sustainability, and the fact that real progress has been made on some fronts, many aspects of the natural environment continue to degrade, causing a serious and quantifiable impact on the tourism sector.

Data reveals that the environmental strength of a country is directly related to tourism revenue. Although this relationship is complex, and there is no evidence of direct causality, the more pristine the natural environment of a country is, the more tourists are inclined to travel there, and the more they are willing to pay to access well-preserved areas. Consequently, as the natural capital depletes, destinations lose revenue.

The Nine Best Countries to Visit in South America in 2023 for Nature, Culture, and Adventure

By Author Steph Dyson

Posted on Last updated: 12th December 2023

Why do we travel? This is one of those existential questions best to answer with an example or experience, and the amazing continent of South America is full of them.

Chances are you’ve got a friend who raves about their time in Peru, Brazil, or Chile and you’re itching to get there yourself.

I’m here to give you a leg up on where to go, what to do, and how to do it best. I’ve visited almost all of the countries in South America (I’m just missing Ecuador, Brazil, Venezuela, and French Guiana), so I’m in a pretty unique position to guide you through this continent’s most spectacular places.

From towering mountain ranges to lush rainforests, dynamic cities, and spectacular beaches, South America serves up some of the world’s greatest adventures.

If you’re after unspoiled nature, beautiful landscapes, incomparable ruins, sun, and surf, or world-class food and drink, I’ve got you covered.

So which are the best countries to visit in South America? That’s for you to decide – but here are my suggestions.

Safety at a glance

It’s never been safer! Security has steadily improved across the continent, and most places in South America are now secure destinations for individuals and families. While petty crimes such as pickpocketing, car break-ins, and muggings can still occur, most trouble can be avoided by observing common sense.

While you should consult with your government travel advisories, we can confidently say that South America is an open and friendly travel destination.

As a general rule, the larger cities and capitals have the most crime, and visitors should avoid walking there late at night. It is advisable to take a taxi or Uber to your destination after dark. Avoid walking around with large amounts of cash, expensive jewelry, or with your phone out to ensure you are not a target.

Of the South American countries, Uruguay is statistically the safest country in South America, and Chile, Argentina, and Guyana rank as the next most secure. Violent crime is quite uncommon in these countries.

Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Colombia are also generally safe for visitors who avoid the worse areas of the largest cities. Brazil has the highest crime rate of the countries covered here, but travelers who avoid flashing their valuables in public rarely run into trouble.

For more information on the current safety situation in South America, read our guide to the safest countries in South America .

All countries in South America are now open for travel. We strongly encourage all travelers to be fully vaccinated before journeying abroad.

At the time of writing, no country requires full vaccination for entry, but some countries require a negative PCR test prior to departure. If fully vaccinated, testing is not necessary.

In addition, proof of travel insurance covering Covid-related illness is required in all South American countries.

1. Peru: food and archaeological heritage

Let’s kick off with an unforgettable destination: Peru. The land of the Inca is one of superlatives, from the topography to the kitchen. A lifetime could be spent exploring this country, and it would be a life well spent.

Everyone who visits raves about Peruvian food . While the ceviche gets the most airtime, the sheer variety of dishes never fails to impress. Its influences range from Inca to Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese. Few countries have incorporated so many ingredients and flavors into such a sumptuous cuisine.

Haute cuisine in Maido, one of Lima's best restaurants and an unmissable culinary experience to have on a visit to Peru

A great choice for ceviche in Lima is La Mar Cevicheria , serving up the daily catch to discerning locals. For a truly special meal in Lima, head to the Michelin star-rated Maido , which specializes in nikkei , a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian foods.

Of special note is the cuisine of Peru’s southern city, Arequipa. For a taste of chupe de camarón (prawns in a rich curry-like soup) and rocoto relleno (spicy pepper stuffed with mince and veggies), try Victoria Picanteria Democrática in the center of Arequipa. Don’t forget to wash it all down with a pisco sour or chicha morada .

Between feasts, Peru has some of the best archaeological sites to explore. While everyone (rightly) praises the mountaintop citadel and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu, this wonder is just the tip of the iceberg. In the Sacred Valley region near Cusco, visitors shouldn’t miss Saqsaywamán , Pisac , and Ollantaytambo .

If ancient mysteries are your thing, check out the expansive Nazca Lines in the desert in the south of the country. In the north just outside Trujillo is the ancient city of Chan Chan , which predates the Incas. Last, one of Peru’s best-kept secrets is Kuélap , built a thousand years before the arrival of the Spanish.

2. Chile: Desert, hiking havens, ancient ruins, and wine

Venturing south, Chile is a land of extremes. It is a country with temperate rainforests and Earth’s driest desert, the towering Andes mountains, and bucolic wine country. It seems a world apart from even the neighboring countries, and this isolation has given it its distinct character.

At nearly opposite ends of the country are two of Chile’s biggest draws, the glacier-marked southern region of Patagonia, and the northern Atacama Desert. Both are prime destinations for trekking, camping, and getting away from it all.

Nature lovers will find themselves in heaven further south, though. Chilean Patagonia has an end-of-the-world feel to it, between the wind-swept high plains, glacial lakes, and snow-clad Andean peaks of Torres del Paine National Park .

Los Cuernos as seen from the road into Torres del Paine National Park from the south

This massive region, which includes the isolated landscapes of barely-visited Tierra del Fuego, is ripe for exploration, and all four seasons offer a different adventure for visitors, including camping, hiking, wildlife spotting, kayaking, and much more. For details, take a look at my Patagonia itineraries .

The stark beauty of the Atacama Desert draws visitors for its wildlife, salt flats, geysers, and stargazing. San Pedro de Atacama is the central hub for journeys further afield, and travelers can either do a guided tour (mention Worldly Adventurer for a 5% discount) or go it alone with a rented 4X4. For more, read up on my guide to the Atacama .

Across the Pacific Ocean – just 3,686 kilometers (2,290 miles) away! – Chile’s most enigmatic island rises out of the ocean. Dotted with angular stone heads known as moai, Rapa Nui (Easter Island) is a living relic of the Rapanui culture who’ve inhabited this remote island for over 800 years.

Closer to civilization, the fertile lands of central Chile are home to some of the world’s best vineyards. The rich volcanic soil is ideal for many grape varietals, including cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and chardonnay, as well as rarer finds such as carignan, cabernet franc, and carmenere.

Between Santiago and Valparaiso is the Casablanca Valley, home to several award-winning wine producers, including Viña Casas del Bosque . Further south, Viña Montes in the Colchagua Valley specializes in bold cabernet sauvignon and complex carmenere.

3. Argentina: football, barbecue, and vast natural spectacles

Chile’s neighbor across the Andes, Argentina, is a land of passion. The music, the dancing, the sport, and the food are all a reflection of this large, confident, and diverse country.

Much of what Chilean Patagonia offers can be found in southern Argentina, but a lot of the country’s appeal is in its cities and culture. A prime example is football.

Recently crowned World Cup champions for a third time, La Albiceleste are a national obsession bordering on religion.

Spectators dressed in blue at Boca Junions football stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina

The cities of Buenos Aires , Rosario, Santa Fe, and Cordoba are home to the most storied of the nation’s football clubs, and visitors are eagerly recruited into their fan bases at the first opportunity.

Arguably the most-storied of these clubs, Boca Juniors, play their home matches at La Bombonera, a temple, and cauldron of footballing passion. For those keen on an unforgettable experience, take a tour of the stadium.

It is very difficult, but possible, to get tickets to a match, but beware: a grudge match between rivals can make a London derby seem like a mild affair. The only way to get tickets is through the broker Landingpadba .

Other clubs in the capital to watch include River Plate, Estudiantes, and San Lorenzo.

Argentines are nearly as passionate about their asado as they are about their football. As the world’s largest producer of beef, asado restaurants can be found everywhere, and almost without exception serve expertly grilled prime cuts.

Steak and chorizo sausage on an open grill in Argentina (and one of the reason it's one of the best countries to visit in South America)

For some serious steak, head to Don Julio in Palermo District, Buenos Aires. While the focus is rightly on the beef (with optional chimichurri sauce), don’t miss the bife de chorizo sausage and a glass of malbec wine.

Finally, I’d be remiss if I failed to mention some of Argentina’s vast natural landmarks. Iguaza Falls straddles the border with Brazil, and while both sides allow you to appreciate this 80-meter-high (262-foot) cascade of thundering water, Argentina can lay claim to some of the more dazzling viewpoints.

Views of the impressive snout of the Perito Moreno Glacier in Los Glaciares National Park with people stood on boardwalks beneath it.

In the far south of the country, Argentina’s other giant natural icon is water but in a colder form. Located close to the Patagonian town of El Calafate, the Perito Moreno Glacier is perhaps the easiest glacier to reach in all of South America, measures 250 square kilometers (96 square miles), and – for added drama – is known for its spectacular calving of ice.

The area’s within striking distance of Tierra del Fuego and Ushuaia, a city with a dramatic situation upon the Beagle Channel and the hub for cruises to the White Continent, aka Antarctica (read my list of the best books about Antarctica for inspiration and learn when’s the best time to visit !)

Looking to head to the White Continent?  I highly recommend the brilliant Swoop Antarctica. Their staff have extensive, first-hand experience of sailing to Antarctica and, because they sell cruises for all the well-known companies, they can give you handy, impartial advice for choosing the one that best suits you. What’s more, they specialize in small ship expedition cruises, which means you’ll be allowed to get off the boat at every stop on the itinerary (which is not the case for large ships!) and you won’t pay a cent more by booking through them rather than directly with the cruise company themselves.  Ready to be inspired?  Check out their  classic cruises to the Antarctic Peninsula , or their more unusual trips to  wildlife-rich South Georgia and the Falklands , or go further than most on  a cruise to the Antarctic Circle .

4. Brazil: Beach and carnaval

For decades, the word Brazil has been synonymous with fun. And given Brazilians’ love for music, dancing, and hanging out at the beach, how could it not? The biggest country in South America, Brazil has a culture and vibe all its own. I’m betting its infectious personality rubs off on you.

In Southern Brazil near the city of Florianópolis is the island of Santa Catarina, perhaps Brazil’s top destination for beach-goers. Visitors from all over come for the white sand beaches, swimming, surfing, and all-night parties.

The island has several beaches, from busy and buzzing to secluded and relaxed. These are indeed cool places to travel.

In addition to the coastline on the sea, there are the calmer waters of the lagoon, Lagoa da Conceição, for several types of water sports, including wakeboarding, water skiing, kayaking, and sailing.

Praia de Lagoinha do Leste beach on Santa Catarina in Brazil

The most popular beach for surfing and hanging out with locals is Praia Mole . There are seafood restaurants, beachside bars, and DJ parties year-round. Go to Barraco da Mole for a cold caipirinha overlooking the beach, and Tropical da Mole next door for a seafood feast.

For gorgeous beaches away from the crowds, try Praia da Lagoinha do Leste in the south of the island. You’ll need to hike a bit to get there, but it’s well worth the effort.

And of course, visitors to Brazil won’t want to miss out on the annual Carnaval, celebrated across the country but best experienced in Rio de Janeiro or Salvador.

The ultra-popular Rio festival is exuberantly celebrated by locals and visitors alike, and everyone is welcome to join the street parties, music, and dancing. The most famous parade is in the Sambadrome . It’s a jaw-dropping spectacle with its riotous floats, costumes, and displays.

Every neighborhood in the city has its own celebration, though. Each bloco (street party) reflects the neighborhood and people who live there. Just put on something yellow and blue and join in!

A woman dressed in a green outfit at Rio de Janeiro's carnaval in Brazil, one of the best countries to visit in South America.

While Carnaval in Rio gets international plaudits, Salvador’s celebration, in the northern state of Bahia, is no less fun. Carnaval in Salvador reflects the large Afro-Brazilian population and their unique culture. This one sees less foreign tourism and may be a more local experience for travelers.

5. Colombia: Cartagena and national parks

One visit to Colombia and you might get hooked. There’s so much to see and do that it merits repeated visits, and the local people are some of the friendliest you’ll meet anywhere in the world.

Travelers to Colombia are drawn to its well-preserved colonial architecture, warm and welcoming people and its incomparable national parks.

Cartagena , on the Caribbean coast in the north, is one of the most atmospheric colonial cities from the Spanish era. Its brightly-colored buildings crowd the streets, providing shade from the intense heat of the sun. The narrow streets open into leafy plazas with outstanding museums, cathedrals, and monuments.

Catedral de Santa Catalina - A row of buildings with balconies and a tower

Travelers should make sure to visit the massive San Felipe de Barajas fortress , Palace of the Inquisition in the Cartagena Museum , and the Santa Catalina de Alejandría Cathedral .

Taking a tour with an indigenous Zenú guide offers the opportunity to peer under the superlatively beautiful skin of the city and learn about the struggles of Colombia’s indigenous people – and how tourism can help them revive their culture.

Just as stunning as the sights is the food. As Cartagena has grown in tourist popularity, its restaurant scene has exploded. Of special note are Restaurante Celele and Doña Lola in the Getsemaní neighborhood.

After dinner, head to Donde Fidel for salsa music and dancing, or Alquímico for DJs and cocktails. Read the full list of the best restaurants in Cartagena for more inspiration.

The astounding range of Colombia’s natural environments never fails to impress. With the Amazon rainforest, sun-drenched beaches, towering mountain ranges, and cloud forests, few countries can match Colombia’s amazing variety of national parks .

La Ciudad Perdida or The Lost City is tucked into the jungle in the north of Colombia

Tayrona National Park is an idyllic Caribbean beach retreat with jungle leading right down to the sand. For a slice of deep Amazonian jungle, head to Amacayacu , a remote national park. The high Andes El Cocuy offers prime trekking and camping opportunities, and Los Nevados is famous for its ethereal cloud forest under towering wax palm trees.

However, if you want to combine jungle landscapes with hidden archeological sites, don’t miss Colombia’s Ciudad Perdida, a “lost” city tucked away in the forests of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and only reachable as part of a five-day trek.

For all things Colombia, read my other guides .

6. Ecuador: The Galapágos Islands and Scenic Train Journeys

This relatively small country in South America is packed full of unforgettable experiences. Wedged between Colombia and Peru, it shares characteristics with both, yet has its own distinct culture, cuisine, and vibe.

From the spectacle of the Galápagos to the towering active volcanoes in the country’s center, Ecuador has so much to offer visitors.

An iguana on a white sand beach in the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador

The Galápagos Islands are a living laboratory for evolving species, having inspired Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and now drawing tourists for its unique wildlife, including penguins, iguanas, giant Galápagos tortoises, manta rays, whale sharks, and blue-footed boobies.

Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts will love exploring the reefs around the different islands and there are ways that you can even explore Galapagos on a budget .

While South America leaves much to be desired in the rail travel department, Ecuador has some scenic rail lines catering to travelers.

Routes include the Quito – El Boliche that passes by Cotopaxi Volcano, the thrilling Devil’s Nose which switchbacks down a steep ridge, and the Ibarra – Salinas line with several tunnels and marvelous bridges over river gorges.

Many of these excursions include food and local guided tours at the destination. For more information about traveling on Ecuador’s railways, check out their website .

7. Bolivia: Lake Titicaca and the Salar de Uyuni

In the middle of the Andes range is a country known for its high altitude and stark natural beauty. Bolivia may not be as touristy as its neighboring countries, but that’s not due to a lack of attractions.

The floating Uros Islands on Lake Titicaca

Its most famous destination is the world’s highest lake, Titicaca, which it shares with Peru. Close to its border with Chile is the world’s largest salt flats: the otherworldly Salar de Uyuni.

Lake Titicaca is a natural wonder of the world, a huge expanse filled with glacial meltwater sitting at a dizzying height of 3812 meters (12,507 feet). Travelers shouldn’t miss a visit to Isla del Sol in the middle of the lake, the mythical birthplace of the Incas.

Copacabana, the gateway town to the lake, is easily reachable from the city of La Paz , itself the highest capital city in the world.

The Salar de Uyuni with the sunlight finally filtering over it.

On the Peruvian side of Titicaca are the Uros Islands , famous for being constructed out of reeds. Their homes, boats, and furniture are all hand-woven and float on the lake.

In the high desert of western Bolivia, the Salar de Uyuni stretches to the horizon and during the rainy season acts as a perfect mirror of the sky above. In the dry season the salt flat turns paper white, and the terrain is less muddy and easier to traverse.

Also of interest just outside the town of Uyuni is the eerie train graveyard, a remnant of decades past when local mining was big business. In fact, Uyuni will likely gain importance in the years to come as the area is rich in lithium, the key mineral required for producing batteries.

Check out my other guides for a comprehensive list of what to do in Bolivia .

8. Uruguay: Cowboy Ranches and Punta del Este

Sandwiched between Argentina and Brazil, the Spanish-speaking country of Uruguay is influenced by its neighbors but has a distinctly European feel to it.

As in Argentina, this is gaucho (cowboy) country, and cattle and horse ranches are big business. And like Brazil, Uruguay has a legendary beach hotspot, Punta del Este, to call its own.

A major draw of Uruguay is its estancias : working cattle ranches that are often open to tourists. The plains, rolling hills, and marshlands of rural Uruguay are ideal for horseback riding.

A group of horses looking out of a stable on a Uruguyan ranch.

Visitors can learn the life of a cattle rancher or go on an extended horse-riding trip at Estancia Aguila Blanca or San Pedro de Timote .

The country’s biggest and buzziest draw is the long, sandy stretch of beach in Punta del Este in the southeast. Surfers, scenesters, and the international jet set have been coming here for decades to bask in the sun and party till dawn.

The best-known symbol of Punta del Este is the striking La Mano , a statue of stone fingers emerging from the sand.

It’s easy to get your own piece of sand, too, as the beautiful beaches stretch for over 20 kilometers on either side of the peninsula. Surfers should head for Playa Brava just east of the point.

La Mano, a statue of a hand rising out of the desert in Punta del Este in Uruguay

Beyond the sand, visitors shouldn’t miss the renowned Ralli and MACA museums. After dark, dine at the outstanding Lo de Tere or Leonardo Etxea . Following dinner, have a drink at Bigote or Moby Dick before dancing at Ovo into the small hours.

The area also attracts visitors for its range of wildlife. Southern right whales are often spotted from June to November, as are dolphins and orcas, while nearby Isla de Lobos has South America’s largest colony of sea lions.

9. Guyana: rainforests and giant wildlife

Mylast destination is far less known than the other countries on this list. However, Guyana will no doubt appeal to the intrepid traveler.

Ecotourists have the chance to see a rare giant anteater on the grasslands of Guyana.

About 80% of the country is covered in rainforest, English is the national language and you’re likely to encounter few if any tour groups.

Because Guyana has retained its large swathes of primary forest, the habitats of its diverse species have remained intact, with many large species resident in this country.

In the national reserves, you may encounter jaguars, huge bird-eating spiders, howler monkeys, and harpy eagles. To see some of these animals and for an unforgettable experience, stay at the ATTA Rainforest Lodge in the Iwokrama Rainforest Reserve.

In the south of Guyana stretch the grasslands of Rupunupi. Visitors to Karanambu Lodge have the opportunity to spot capybaras, caimans, giant anteaters, and giant otters.

Kaieteur Falls in Guyana, South America and a hidden secret

For those who dream of seeing the Angel Falls in neighboring Venezuela, Kaieteur Falls are no less spectacular, plummeting 226 meters (741 feet) and officially the longest single-drop waterfall on Earth.

For more on the hidden gem of Guyana, read my guides or contact my recommended tour agency, Wilderness Explorers (and mention Worldly Adventurer for a 5% discount).

Belize — open, proof of vaccination or negative test required

most american tourist friendly countries

Belize is now open to U.S. travelers, according to the U.S. Embassy .

Travelers arriving by air must provide one of the following items to enter the country:

  • Proof of being fully vaccinated.
  • A negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within four days of arrival.
  • A negative COVID-19 antigen test taken within two days of arrival.

If none of the above items are provided, a rapid antigen test is required, which will cost $50 in cash.

Also, travelers must book a "Gold Standard" hotel, according to the Belize tourism website . These hotels have received extra health and safety training and have been approved to welcome tourists. Proof of a Gold Standard booking will be needed when going through customs.

Take note that there is a nationwide curfew and that masks are required in many situations, such as when in businesses and riding public transportation. Restaurants and businesses in the country are mostly open with capacity restrictions.

The U.S. Department of State has issued a Level 3: Reconsider Travel advisory due to COVID-19.

Costa Rica — open, health forms and proof of insurance required

Costa Rica has reopened to U.S. travelers from all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Those wishing to enter the country can enter by air or certain land borders and must follow a list of specific requirements.

National parks and beaches nationwide are open from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, according to the U.S. Embassy . Plus, businesses can operate between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. daily with capacity restrictions.

That said, the country has some of the tougher entry requirements. Travelers must complete the following requirements:

  • Fill out the electronic health pass form before departure.
  • Produce a negative RT-PCR diagnostic test with results dated within 72 hours of departure to Costa Rica.
  • Show proof of traveler's medical insurance, either purchased internationally or directly from Costa Rica through the National Insurance Institute or Sagicor .
  • For international insurance policies, tourists must request a certification from their insurance company, issued in English or Spanish, verifying at least the following three conditions:
  • Effectiveness of the policy during the visit to Costa Rica.
  • Guaranteed coverage of medical expenses in the event of becoming ill with the COVID-19 virus while in Costa Rica, for at least $50,000.
  • Minimum coverage of $2,000 for potential quarantine lodging expenses issued as a result of the pandemic.
  • Note that any emergency medical or dental coverage provided by credit cards such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve will not meet this requirement.
  • Have remained for at least 14 days in one of the countries to which Costa Rica has opened its air border.
  • Have no COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Of course, you'll still need a valid passport to enter and proof of onward travel to exit Costa Rica to bypass tourist visa requirements for stays of 90 days or less.

The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory due to COVID-19.

El Salvador — open, proof of vaccination or negative PCR test required

most american tourist friendly countries

El Salvador reopened for commercial flights to Oscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport (SAL) in San Salvador on Sept. 19. The country had been closed to international visitors since mid-March 2020 when the pandemic spread worldwide.

"Tourism is the industry that allows us to move around the world and we are focused on offering visitors the best destination experience, but above all, safe," said Morena Valdez, El Salvador's minister of tourism. "I invite you to cross borders and discover that El Salvador is an ideal place to visit, establish tourist operations, do business and live."

To enter the country, travelers must present either a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival or proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, according to the U.S. Embassy in El Salvador . The ability to enter with proof of vaccination is a relatively new policy, so the embassy recommends that passengers confirm that their airline has updated its own policies accordingly.

Local businesses are open with no restriction, and public transportation is operating.

The U.S. State Department has a Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution advisory due to crime and COVID-19.

Guatemala — open, with specific entry requirements

most american tourist friendly countries

Guatemala is open to most travelers who follow the entry protocols.

Those wishing to travel to Guatemala must provide one of the following three things, according to the U.S. Embassy :

  • A negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours of arrival.
  • Proof of full vaccination.
  • Proof of recovery from COVID-19 within three months of travel to Guatemala.

Flights are operating to and from the country, and land borders are open. However, most travelers who have been in Brazil, South Africa or the United Kingdom in the past two weeks will be denied entry into Guatemala.

Travelers must pass through health checkpoints upon arrival, and those exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms might be denied entry into the country. Masks are required in most public places with fines for noncompliance. There is currently no curfew in the country, and public transportation is operating at 50% capacity.

The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 3: Reconsider Travel advisory due to crime and COVID-19.

Honduras — open, proof of vaccination or negative PCR test required

most american tourist friendly countries

Honduras reopened for tourists from all countries on Aug. 17 . Entering visitors must complete a registration form from the government and present either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours before entry at the border. Foreigners who have been in or transited through the U.K. or South Africa in the past 21 days are restricted from entering Honduras, according to the U.S. Embassy .

The local health authority maintains the right to grant or deny final approval for entry based on their determination of risk of COVID-19 from any visiting travelers. Exiting travelers must also complete another pre-check form online and complete a health surveillance form, affidavit of clean health and customs form.

There is a curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. in place until July 25. Thankfully, most businesses are open at 50% capacity, and public transportation is operating. Bars, nightclubs, gyms, sports complexes, convention centers, theaters and educational centers are currently closed.

Note that the U.S. State Department has issued a Level 3: Reconsider Travel advisory due to crime and COVID-19.

Related: Sweet Spot Sunday: Fly to Central America for 12,500 American miles or less

Mexico — open, no entry requirements

most american tourist friendly countries

Americans can travel by air to anywhere in Mexico with almost zero restrictions or entry requirements. The land border, however, remains closed to all but essential travel through at least Aug. 21, according to the U.S. Embassy .

The entirety of Mexico is now open to international tourists with no testing or vaccine requirements. You will be required to complete a health declaration form upon arrival.

There is a four-tier traffic light system in place that determines if businesses can open and gatherings can take place. The red tier signifies maximum restriction, orange limits capacity in public places to 30%, yellow allows businesses to open with "basic prevention measures," and green allows businesses to operate with zero restriction.

Tourists are strongly encouraged to wear their face masks in all social spaces, including on flights. However, firsthand accounts from TPG staff note that mask compliance is hit or miss.

The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 3: Reconsider Travel advisory due to COVID-19 and, in some areas, kidnapping and crime.

Nicaragua — open, negative PCR test required

most american tourist friendly countries

Nicaragua never really shut down over the coronavirus pandemic , drawing censure from humanitarian organizations such as Human Rights Watch . Local reports claimed that the government actively discouraged Nicaraguans, including health workers and airport staff, from wearing masks.

The U.S. Embassy in Nicaragua states that a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival is required to enter Nicaragua. Additionally, travelers arriving from countries with a known yellow fever risk must present proof of vaccination against yellow fever. Travelers should be prepared for additional health screenings, although the embassy states that travelers are not required to produce any additional health documentation to enter the country.

Other than that, businesses — including bars and restaurants — remain open, and there is no curfew in place.

The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory due to COVID-19, and also notes "limited healthcare availability and arbitrary enforcement of laws."

Panama — open, negative PCR or antigen test required

most american tourist friendly countries

Tourists can enter Panama so long as they bring a negative PCR or antigen COVID-19 test taken no more than 48 hours before arrival in Panama. Those who do not have a test can take one before airport customs for $50. Those who test positive are required to quarantine at a government-provided hotel for 14 days free of charge. All travelers must complete an electronic affidavit before check-in that states they agree to comply with COVID-19 restrictions and have not been in contact with a COVID-19-positive person in the past 14 days.

There are tougher restrictions for those who have been in (or transited through) South America, India, South Africa or the United Kingdom in the past 15 days. These travelers are required to take an $85 COVID-19 test upon arrival. If negative, they will be placed into a mandatory three-day quarantine at an authorized hotel. Then, the traveler will have to take another COVID-19 test on the third day of quarantine and can exit quarantine if the results come back negative.

Most of Panama's requirements follow basic health protocols for COVID-19 prevention. Face masks are required on all forms of transportation and in public places. Travelers are encouraged to utilize electronic payment where possible, take advantage of hand sanitizer stations, submit to temperature checks by businesses and tourism operators, and use digital maps and menus to avoid cross-contamination through paper.

Most businesses are open in Panama, albeit at a reduced capacity. Restaurants are open and encourage reservations to avoid crowding. Further, there's a 50% capacity limit in shared vehicles and a 30% capacity limit on event spaces. Beaches are once again open for visitors.

I've Traveled Alone to 65 Countries – Here Are My Top 5 Destinations for Flying Solo

Where to find adventure, group activities, affordable luxury hotels, and total relaxation as a solo traveler.

Katie Jackson/Travel + Leisure

Lewis may have needed Clark, but for most trips, I think it’s OK to be a party of one. In fact, my favorite style of travel, # solotravel , is now trending on TikTok and in real life. But if there’s anything I’ve learned from adventuring alone in 65 countries, it’s this: some countries cater to lone wolves better than others. Whether you’re looking to lay on the beach, climb a volcano, or explore the big city, here are my top five destinations for flying solo.

Giacomo Augugliaro/Getty Images

Western Europe’s most affordable country, Portugal has been my second home since 2016. Whether in Alentejo or the Algarve, I can always find a €2 glass of wine and five-star hotels, including IHG’s new Vignette Collection properties in Porto and Lisbon , for under €200 per night. It’s the fifth safest country in Europe, according to the Institute for Economics & Peace 2023 Global Peace Index (for comparison, Spain ranked 23rd and France 34th) and is home to the world’s largest standing wave. Since surfing solo is dangerous, I go with Onda Pura . In Lisbon , visit the Oceanário , voted the world’s best aquarium . Alone, you can linger at exhibits for as long as you want. I’ve traveled the country by train and bus, but I recommend renting a car for as little as €25 per day. Pro tip: Learn how to drive manual first.

South Africa

While it’s not the safest country on the Mother Continent, ranking 32nd in Sub-Saharan Africa in the Global Peace Index , South Africa is the easiest for Americans to visit. United Airlines offers nonstop service from multiple U.S. cities to Cape Town, English is widely spoken, and there are restaurants catering to every diet. I use Facebook to join group hikes and dinners and Airbnb to book guided, local experiences. I recommend doing the “From Prisoner to President Tour” hosted by Nelson Mandela’s former prison guard and friend, Christo Brand . To visit the wineries, take the Franschhoek Tram . I’ve also enjoyed solo safaris. Alone, you can choose your start time (I hate waking up at 5:30 a.m. for game drives), and you always have the best seat. During low season, some lodges waive the single supplement. Year-round, the new Loapi Tented Camp only charges solo travelers 62% of what it would charge a couple. For travel within the country, book a package with a company like Kensington Tours ; it includes all transfers.

Since I lived in Nicaragua, I have an impressive collection of passport stamps from Costa Rica . It’s the safest place in Central America , and it offers everything from volcano trekking to beach hopping on two incredible coastlines. I want to check out the new SP Corcovado Wilderness Lodge , which hosts wellness retreats and is part of the Red Sofia Program (designed to make travel safer for single women). Meanwhile, in Monteverde, solo travelers can’t go wrong at Hotel Belmar where you don’t have to venture off site for adventure (book the canopy immersion and coffee tasting). For an all-inclusive, I recommend Secrets Papagayo .  It’s not the place to stay if you don't want to be around couples, but it’s adults-only and hosts theme nights, beach games, and cocktail parties where singles can mingle.

Good news! You don’t need to be with a romantic partner to visit the Maldives . I solo-mooned there and had a blast falling back in love with me, myself, and I. Highlights include visiting Coco Palm Dhuni Kohlu’s turtle rescue center , reading by my plunge pool (“Eat, Pray, Love” is a must for solo travelers), and when I wanted company, hitting up the beach barbecues. You also don’t have to be a millionaire. The island of Maafushi caters to backpackers, and even at a resort, I stayed under $350 per day. Have a bigger budget? Consider booking the Gili Solo Experience . Boasting an underwater suite and restaurant, the Conrad Maldives is also on my list. For flights, try Emirates ; round-trip fares from New York's JFK to Malé start at $1,265.

Not having anyone to split expenses with, domestic travel is cheapest. I explore my backyard in Montana where I staycate at Lone Mountain Ranch . With its queen bed, the Meadowlark Cabin is ideal for one, and the group activities offer opportunities to socialize. For an urban escape, I prefer New York City , where I stay at NH Collection New York Madison Avenue . Its lobby has a community table, fireplaces, and live jazz most nights. Since there’s no shame in doing the Great White Way without a date, I went to see “ The Notebook ” in April. Finding one center orchestra seat is easier than finding seats together. For getting around, use the MTA’s new OMNY credit/debit card tap program ; it’s the best value.

These Are 10 Most Travel-Friendly Countries In Africa To Explore

Africa is an extraordinary destination, and these countries are some of the most travel-friendly for people wanting to explore the African continent.

Africa is a vast continent home to over a billion people and some 56 countries. It is diverse, and it is ancient. It is a place that everyone should visit if they have the chance. Plus, North Africa is extremely different from Sub-Saharan Africa and is often treated separately.

This article will only mention travel-friendly countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and not those of North Africa (like Morocco and Egypt). The list of travel-friendly nations in Africa can change over time (e.g., Ethiopia was one of the best destinations in Africa before the civil war broke out there three years ago).

10 South Africa: The Most Developed Country In Africa

South Africa stands out from much of the rest of Africa for being well-developed in many respects (development is spread unevenly). The country is the top destination in Sub-Saharan Africa and is home to some of the best national parks in Africa to visit (such as the famous Kruger National Park ).

South Africa is diverse and boasts many incredible attractions - from the quaint coastal city of Cape Town to the dramatic Garden Route.

9 Kenya: Superb National Parks & Pristine Beaches

Kenya is one of the most developed nations in East Africa and is one of the most popular destinations on the African continent. Kenya boasts reasonable infrastructure for the region and has some of the greatest national parks in the region (such as Maasai Mari - the northern extension of the Serengeti ). The Serengeti is one of the most incredible places to see African wildlife.

Related: What To Know When Visiting Kenya's Most Famous Safari Destination

8 Tanzania: The Setting Of The Lion King

Disney's The Lion King was set in the Serengeti of Tanzania. Like Kenya, Tanzania is a very welcoming nation with some of the top national parks in Africa. One of the gems of Tanzania is the autonomous island of Zanzibar. Zanzibar is a remarkable tropical beach destination with an influence from historic Arab traders.

7 Namibia: The Best Place In Africa For A Road Trip

Namibia is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. Here, travelers explore the vast open deserts and countless hidden gems of the Kalahari Desert and the Atlantic Coast. See shipwrecks, the incredible Etosha National Park (which offers some of the most affordable safaris in Africa ), ghost towns (such as Kolmanskop ), and more.

Namibia, like South Africa, is one of the best places to rent a 4WD and explore the nation on a self-guided road trip.

6 Botswana: Home Of Herds Of Elephants

Botswana is one of the most stable countries in Africa and has long been a favorite for remarkable road trips. Botswana is home to an exceptionally large number of elephants, and the country takes conservation very seriously. On the downside, Botswana is also known to be one of the more expensive destinations in Africa.

5 Rwanda: The Jewel In The Heart Of Africa

Rwanda is one of the safest and most well-run countries in Africa (even if it has a traumatic past). Today, it is one of the top destinations to see the lush interior of Africa and go Mountain Gorilla trekking. Rwanda is a more expensive destination but one that is well set up for receiving international visitors.

Related: Rwanda’s Nyungwe National Park: Things To Do in One of Africa’s Oldest Rainforests

4 Senegal: One Of The Most Stable Countries In West Africa

Most of the popular tourist destinations in Africa are in the East and the South of the continent. Few people bother to visit West Africa, and many of the nations of that region suffer from instability. Senegal is one of the most stable and travel-friendly countries in West Africa and offers a peek into a less-visited part of Africa.

3 Seychelles: A Tropical Island Paradise

Not all of the countries of Africa are actually on the continent. The Seychelles is a small island nation just off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. It is one of the world's premier tropical island resort destinations that manages to draw visitors from across the world. It is also one of the safest countries in Africa to visit.

2 Zambia: See The Largest Waterfall In The World

Zambia may not be high on many people's lists, but it is a rewarding country with a very friendly population. In the north, visitors can see the awe-inspiring Bat Migration, while in the south, on the border with Zimbabwe, visitors can see Victoria Falls - the largest waterfall in the world .

The gateway is the town of Livingstone, and it is one of the few African cities where it is possible to see zebra and even elephants wandering down the streets.

Victoria Falls is the world's largest waterfall. However, most people don't know that the Denmark Strait Cataract is the tallest waterfall in the world (and it's found deep underwater!) .

1 Eswatini (Swaziland): The Forgotten Gem Beside South Africa

South Africa is also a great base to explore other countries in Southern Africa - such as Lesotho and Eswatini (formerly Swaziland). Eswatini is a tiny country that few bother to visit. It is located just next to South Africa, and its people are extremely welcoming to foreigners. It is arguably one of the forgotten gems of Africa and definitely worth seeing when looking for less touristy places in Africa to visit.

Discover why Eswatini is one of the hidden gems in Africa that's worth visiting before planning a vacation to the African continent.

This North American country tops the list of the safest countries for travelers

most american tourist friendly countries

A new year means new destinations.

When looking at where to go, travelers will consider the usual factors such as weather, cost and available activities. This year, safety is also top of mind as more people want to go off the beaten path and take solo trips.

To help, travel insurance provider Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection just released its ninth annual State of Travel Insurance report, which includes the safest countries in the world for travelers.

"The definition of safe destination has evolved,” Carol Mueller, vice president at Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, told USA TODAY in an email. "In our most recent survey, travelers lean in on countries they believe as safe destinations they can move about freely without discrimination or harassment."

To determine the list, the travel insurance provider surveyed 1,702 people on their own travel experiences in different countries and also pulled data from third-party resources that evaluate safety concerns such as terrorism, weather emergencies, health measures and the safety of underrepresented groups. This included the  Global Peace Index  and the State Department’s own  travel safety ratings .

While these countries are considered to be overall safe for people to visit, the company noted the report doesn't mean every part of the country is safe nor account for the possibility of natural disasters. And as always, don't let your guard down when it comes to petty theft against tourists.

'It's like your local bestie': This startup helps make solo travel as a woman feel safer

Read below to see the 15 countries determined to be the safest for all travelers.

The Great White North tops this year's list of safest countries in the world for travelers, thanks to its low violent crime and strict gun laws. Last year, the country, known for its high standard of living and political stability, made sixth on the list.

2. Switzerland

Known for its security and low crime rates, Switzerland made second place for the safest nations to visit. The country is known for its high quality of living and beautiful nature, such as Lake Geneva and Lake Zurich.

Besides having some of the best views of the dancing northern lights , Norway is also one of the safest places when it comes to crime rates, terrorist activity and violent demonstrations. According to the report, Oslo, the capital of Norway, was the country's safest area.

Those wanting to see Ireland's Cliffs of Moher or sip on some Guinness can rest assured in going through with those travel plans. The country had fewer homicides in 2022 than 16 U.S. cities, according to the report.

5. Netherlands

Last year, the Netherlands took the top spot for safest destinations to visit, and this year, it made fifth. Survey respondents repeatedly said they felt safe in the country and its capital Amsterdam. Just beware of the tourist tax increase as the city continues to crack down on reckless partiers.

6. United Kingdom

With a beautiful countryside and cities with low murder and theft rates, the United Kingdom is a safe bet for travelers. Unfortunately, the country is soon going to implement a fee to enter its borders .

7. Portugal

There's a reason digital nomads flock to this sunny coastal country, and it's not just the delicious seafood and wine. Portugal's cities are secure and orderly, and the rural areas are peaceful. In 2022, the country was determined to be one of the best places for solo female travelers too.

Last year, Denmark was the second safest country in the world for travelers, and its low crime rates continue to help it be a safe choice for travelers. The northern European country typically steals the spotlight for its happy residents and its politics.

Like its Nordic neighbor Denmark, Iceland is often regarded as the world's most gender-equal country and the safest country in the world when it comes to crime. To entice travelers even more, the country is home to otherworldly landscapes featuring glaciers, geysers, hot springs, waterfalls and volcanic terrain.

10. Australia

Rugged wilderness and cosmopolitan cities make Australia a desirable country for travelers, especially female solo travelers since the Land Down Under also has low homicide rates. In 2022, there were 377 recorded homicides, about half of what Chicago experienced, according to the report.

11. New Zealand

Although expensive, New Zealand is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts who want to explore its coastlines, mountains, fjords and more, or for those who are big "Lord of the Rings" fans. With low crime rates, the country is also considered to be quite peaceful and great for female solo travelers.

Along with low crime rates, Japan offers travelers a blend of ancient traditions and cutting-edge modernity. Think robot servers in restaurants amongst ancient shrines. In Japanese culture, politeness and orderliness are also highly valued, making it a safe place for travelers, solo or not. However, the report doesn't consider natural disasters, such as the earthquakes that recently shook the western part of the island nation.

Home to the City of Light, France has stood the test of time as one of the world's most popular destinations. Thankfully, for travelers, the country has relatively safe transportation (well, minus petty theft, which is common on the metro) and safety from disease epidemics, according to the report. However, violent demonstrations mean travelers should be cautious and check local media for updates.

Another popular European destination, Spain is known for petty theft like pickpocketing. Overall, the Mediterranean country has a low crime rating for how heavily touristed it is, the report said. Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection recommends people especially watch out for passport thefts, so as always, travel cautiously.

This year, Brazil made the list of safe countries to visit. The survey respondents who identified as women, people of color and LGBTQ+ especially felt safe in the South American country, known for its beautiful beaches. However, Brazil's borders are notably dangerous for crime activity.

Latest Information for U.S. Citizens

Information for U.S. Citizens in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza

The Department reminds U.S. citizens of the continued need for caution and increased personal security awareness as security incidents often take place without warning. The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events. Please see the latest Israel Security Alert .

U.S. citizens should heed the  Travel Advisory  for Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. The U.S. Embassy continues to closely monitor the dynamic security situation in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. There are active military operations and active rocket and mortar fire in Gaza and the Gaza periphery.  Terrorist groups, lone-actor terrorists and other violent extremists continue plotting possible attacks in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. Terrorists and violent extremists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and local government facilities. Violence can occur in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza without warning. If you require emergency assistance while in Israel, the West Bank or Gaza, contact the  U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem  by email ( [email protected] for those in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza or [email protected] for those in Israel outside of Jerusaleml).

Individuals seeking to depart Gaza: As of May 7, the Israel Defense Forces control the Gaza side of the Rafah Crossing. Since that day, the Rafah Crossing between Egypt and Gaza has remained closed. As soon as the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem receives information regarding new exit procedures from Gaza to Egypt, including when crossings resume, we will communicate this to the public immediately.

This remains a complex situation with serious implications for the safety and security of U.S. citizens. U.S. citizens in Gaza in need of assistance should contact [email protected] . U.S. citizens in Gaza are reminded that the U.S. government is unable to provide routine or emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Gaza as U.S. government employees are prohibited from traveling there.

The U.S. government does not control who is permitted to depart Gaza or enter Egypt. Individuals must assess their own safety and risks in attempting to cross the border. Individuals permitted to enter Egypt will likely receive a 72-hour Egyptian visa; all those who cross should have a plan for onward travel from Egypt in this timeframe. U.S. citizens, LPRs and their immediate family members who successfully enter Egypt and require further consular assistance should contact the  U.S. Embassy in Cairo  via the  U.S. Citizens Services Navigator .  Individuals may apply for a U.S. visa at any U.S. Embassy or Consulate; U.S. immigration laws and regulations will apply.

We continue to work in partnership with Egypt and Israel towards safe passage for U.S. citizens, LPRs, and their immediate family members.

Immediate family members of U.S. citizens include:

  • unmarried children under the age of 21, and
  • parents of U.S. citizens.

If the U.S. citizen is under 21, immediate family will also include any siblings who are also unmarried and under 21.

Immediate family members of LPRs include:

  • unmarried children under 21 years of age.

International travel documents for children

See what documents a child needs to travel to or from the U.S. alone or with a parent or relative.

Children traveling to the U.S.

All children, including infants, must have their own travel documents such as a passport or document from a Trusted Traveler Program to enter the U.S. If you travel or are going to travel with a child, consider taking the following documents:

  • If the child is traveling with only one of their custodial parents, they must have a letter of consent, preferably in English and notarized, from the other parent or signed by both parents. The letter should say "I acknowledge that my son/daughter is traveling outside the country with [the name of the adult] with my permission."
  • If one parent has sole custody of the child, a copy of the custody document can take the place of the other parent's letter.
  • Parents who frequently cross the border by land with a minor must always carry a letter of permission from the other parent.

U.S. citizen children traveling abroad

Ports of entry in many countries have security measures to prevent international child abduction . If you are traveling alone with your child, you may be required to present documentation proving you are the parent or legal guardian. You may also need a letter of permission from the other parent for your child to travel.

If your child travels alone, depending on the country, they may be required to present a notarized letter from both parents or their legal guardian. If a minor is traveling abroad and is not accompanied by both parents or a legal guardian, contact the embassy or consulate of the country you will be visiting and ask about entry and exit requirements for that country.
