“The Art of Neville Page” Book Review: Exploring the artistry of modern Star Trek

star trek the art of neville page

Review: Star Trek: The Art of Neville Page

Do you know who Neville Page is? You should, as his artwork has been a driving force of modern Star Trek designs for almost 15 years. From J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek feature film to Star Trek: Picard , his work on creatures and characters has been a pillar of the franchise. It’s fun to consider Page’s designs must have influenced why newer fans of the franchise have joined the club. An artist with that kind of portfolio deserves a showcase, and that’s what fans are getting with Titan Books’ Star Trek: The Art of Neville Page . As it turns out, Page should be proud of this publication, as it appropriately showcases his fantastic designs in a visually pleasing layout.

In the same vein as Star Trek: The Artistry of Dan Curry , which we loved and can’t recommend enough, The Art of Neville Page is a coffee-table book that focuses on cramming as much eye candy onto the pages as possible. We are happy that’s the case because Page’s work in large part constitutes the overall visual design of current-day Star Trek . Franchise historians might especially enjoy this book, as it paints a vivid picture of the work needed to not only bring Star Trek back to the zeitgeist following Enterprise ’s cancelation but return the franchise to the major standing in the entertainment industry we see today.

From Star Trek: The Art of Neville Page

Many artists can draw interesting aliens, but few can draw them while understanding the practicalities of latex, paint, and application time over a ten-hour shoot day… The truest creators understand that connection and still find a way to enable brillance. That’s Neville.” – Star Trek franchise head Alex Kurtzman, in the book’s forward.

The book is divided into chapters dedicated to each phase of Page’s work: the Kelvin Timeline Star Trek films get their own chapter, then the four seasons of Discovery get their own chapters, and finally Picard gets its time in the spotlight. It’s quite the breadth of content. Not only are there designs for aliens never seen in the franchise until Page’s work, such as the ice world monster Hengraggi from Star Trek (2009) and Molly, the endangered animal from Star Trek: Discovery , but fresh designs on old enemies, like the Klingons for Discovery season one, and the Borg for Star Trek: Picard . We were especially thankful for the insight into Discovery ’s Klingon redesign, as the distinctive look of those aliens was a staple of Star Trek ’s relaunched presence on TV, and a subject of some controversy continuing even today. It’s easy to forget how much design work must go into movie-quality science-fiction television nowadays, but studying Page’s designs and reading his anecdotes really brings home the skill and dedication brought to this work.

From Star Trek: The Art of Neville Page

The only critique worth leveling at this book is how there isn’t a handy info card for each alien design. For example, do you remember Rhomsew from Star Trek: Picard ? We certainly didn’t, and the only reason we know this alien is from that series at all is because it’s in the corresponding section of this book. (Thanks to Memory Alpha, we know now this character was a Starfleet officer seen in “Maps and Legends.”) Listing basic facts like when a character appeared, and perhaps who played the character, would have been a welcome addition to this otherwise insightful book. Case in point, we know Rhomsew was Page’s tribute to Star Trek legend Michael Westmore, as “Rhomsew” is just “Westmore” phonetically in reverse.

From Star Trek: The Art of Neville Page

Simply put, if you are someone who appreciates Star Trek ’s intriguing designs, this book is for you. This isn’t just a look at final products, but a journey through the creative process. Preliminary sketches, rejected designs, 3D models, and behind-the-scenes photographs pepper the pages, offering readers an intimate look into Page’s mind and the challenges faced in manifesting his visions. This is a book you’ll flip through for a while.

'Star Trek' creature designer Neville Page on creating aliens and his new book (exclusive)

We chat with the Emmy Award-winning artist for the release of Titan Books' 'Star Trek: The Art of Neville Page.'

an alien costume and makeup that has a face made of concentric rings of illuminated pores

Sci-fi fans might not know his name, but they're undoubtedly familiar with his work.

Neville Page is a name synonymous with inspired creature design and original concepts for films like "Avatar," "Cloverfield," "Super 8," "Prometheus," and in " Star Trek's " cosmos collaborating with directors J.J. Abrams and Justin Lin on "Star Trek" (2009), "Star Trek Into Darkness" (2013), and "Star Trek Beyond" (2016), then onto TV gigs for "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Star Trek: Picard."

Having applied his talents for conceiving Hollywood monsters and aliens for more than two decades, and being seen as a judge on the SYFY TV series "Face Off," Page is an amiable and accessible personality who's always amped to encourage a neophyte or regale fans with revealing anecdotes from working with the film industry's most notable talents like Abrams, Ridley Scott and James Cameron.

" Star Trek: The Art of Neville Page " by author Joe Nazzaro is a new hardcover retrospective showcasing Page's "Trek"-centric work that was just released from Titan Books. This deluxe 192-page volume examines the artist's exacting process, fortified with detailed illustrations plus an exclusive foreword and afterword by award-winning filmmakers, Alex Kurtzman and Michael Westmore.

Space.com spoke to Page regarding his distinctive contributions to "Star Trek," his earliest associations with creator Gene Roddenberry's brainchild, and how the franchise helped shape his life and career as this new book saluting his imaginative creations in the final frontier arrives.

"It's somewhat nostalgic," Page tells Space.com. "I was born in 1965 and having moved from England to Chicago when I was five years old, I was watching a lot of 'Star Trek.' I will never forget the episode, 'Devil in the Dark,' with this creature [The Horta] that looked like a rock and it would slowly crawl on top of people and flatten them and leave a big red potato-chip shape. That one really messed me up and I had recurring nightmares of that creature chasing.

"So there's nostalgia for me and it's really fun to be a part of my childhood and contributing to contemporary 'Star Trek' fans as well as new fans, and hopefully not traumatizing them. 'Star Wars' came out in ’77 as we all know and I wanted everything in my life to be 'Star Wars.'"

a crab-like creature

But fate would eventually step in to steer the rising superstar designer away from that galaxy far, far away and into a bold new job when he was given the opportunity to work on 2009's "Star Trek" reboot via director J.J. Abrams.

"It kind of fell into my lap," Page recalls. "We'd finished 'Cloverfield' and the next production for him was 'Star Trek' and he asked if I wanted to be a part of it. Experiences I had on 'Cloverfield' were so wonderful and the opportunity to continue working with J.J. was very exciting to me.

"I'd finished 'Avatar' with James Cameron but that was all under a roof drawing pictures at the Howard Hughes stage where the first motion-capture stages were set up. It doesn't feel like a movie set because it's people in mo-cap suits and grey boxes and wire frame shapes of things. Being on J.J.'s 'Star Trek' where it was massive sets was such a thrill. I made it a point of going on every set wherever he was and be available for him. The immersion of that production changed my interest in film a great deal. I started off designing one thing for J.J., then it rolled into doing background aliens and Romulans and other creatures and characters.

"Then there was the next 'Star Trek' feature and then one after that, and then 'Star Trek: Discovery' and working with Alex Kurtzman. 'Star Trek' became a huge part of my life and it was important that I really understand the world of the franchise that I'm in. As my responsibilities grew, so did my investment of time to learn about production, the fans, and the canon. The fans are vocal and loud in a good way, and you're learning about their demands."

a man in a suit wearing glasses

Legendary artist H.R. Giger and Academy Award-winning makeup genius Rick Baker were two powerful influences on Page's impressive career so far, and there seems to be an organic integration of their spirit in everything he focuses his imagination on.

"Rick Baker was an inspiration before I even knew I wanted to do what I'm doing," says Page. "I stumbled upon a Fangoria book at a Chicago garage sale. In it was an image of Rick Baker with one of his sculptures and I think it was Mr. Hyde. When I saw that picture of the clay sculpture it had a profound impact on me in that I had no idea a human being could do something like that.

"My influences to be a makeup artist was very early, but as a kid from Chicago, where does one go to do it? Years later working on aliens and having met Rick, the relationship is very different, but I'm still a fanboy who remember this incredible stuff he was doing. His influence through me on 'Star Trek' is that I’ve watched and paid attention to his work for many years. Anytime you observe another artist doing their craft, if you love them that much, it's going to seep in."

an actor wearing a large prosthetic forehead

That brings us to Page inadvertently channeling the ghost of H.R. Giger on "Star Trek: Discovery" Season 1 where the production required a particular Klingon armored torchbearer spacesuit, even if it was only seen on screen for less than a minute.

"I did it with no intention of having Giger's work influence the design," he recalls. "I wonder if it's just my admiration of his work on 'Alien' and the whole biomechanics thing. It was interesting to me when people would see the design and say 'That's very Giger.' But the influence was actually an ammonite fossil. It had a bronze material finish and it's an organic repeating pattern. If you look at Giger's work, that's something he's done a ton of. The Klingon thing started with a Klingon skull. I had ridges that worked their way down the back of the head and into the spine.

"Having worked on 'Prometheus' where my job was to play in Giger's sandbox, I'm pretty familiar with designing a Giger aesthetic versus what I was doing that had Giger 'elements' in it. I was really proud of that Klingon torchbearer spacesuit. It became very personal because there was no time to police what I was doing and it meant that I was allowed to apply 'Star Trek' research and give it a twist, which is what your design job is. Every inch of that suit was thought out, not just in terms of function, but the iconography and metaphor and the narrative behind it."

Star trek: the art of neville page showcases the franchise’s latest visionary.

star trek the art of neville page

Review by C.J. Bunce

He’s one of Star Trek’s greatest contributors to the look of science fiction aliens in 21st century entertainment.  He’s creature designer Neville Page .  Showcasing the 12 years of his entire Star Trek career, a new visual retrospective celebrates Page’s style and designs.   Star Trek: The Art of Neville Page is now available here at Amazon.  In this deluxe, full-color hardcover account, readers will examine the visionary creature designs for some of Star Trek’s most innovative new aliens.  We discussed previously at borg some of Page’s greatest works in our review of The Art of Star Trek: The Kelvin Timeline here and more can be found in The Art of Star Trek here .  The new book comes from writer Joe Nazzaro, who interviewed Page extensively for his book Star Trek Beyond: The Makeup Artistry of Joel Harlow, reviewed here .

star trek the art of neville page

Page has applied his expertise to the creation and development of the aliens of the Star Trek universe from the movies Star Trek  (2009) through to   Star Trek Beyond (2016) as well as the series Star Trek Discovery  and  Star Trek: Picard.  Page’s concept artwork, both detailed and intricate, defines what new Star Trek looks like as distinguished from the first 45 years.  In this book readers will find out what the source of that “intricacy” is: 3D tools.  The torchbearer armor from Star Trek Discovery illustrates this new method of costume and makeup design best, featuring details you really notice in person, but even on the screen 3D printing brings entirely new worlds of detail to life.

star trek the art of neville page

Originally making a break into functional artwork designing things like wheelchairs, Page entered his Star Trek years working for J.J. Abrams on the kaiju beastie for Cloverfield.  Focusing on his concept art and sketches for Star Trek 2009 and Star Trek Beyond, but with most content from Star Trek Discovery, Star Trek: The Art of Neville Page features Page in conversation with author Joe Nazzaro.  It’s a look into Page’s creative process via a collection of primarily digital art, which may make readers and fans of classic Hollywood design and makeup long for the days of practical effects.  Several of the creatures and aliens are re-works of classic Star Trek creations, but if there is a defining look for Page it’s his monsters that feature a facial symmetry of fleshy blobs and bits, and a preference for multiple sets of eyes.

The book includes a foreword by Alex Kurtzman and afterword by Michael Westmore.  Page’s creations for Star Trek: Picard form a smaller portion of the book’s content .

star trek the art of neville page

From the bustling streets of Manchester to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, Neville Page's journey in the world of design and film is nothing short of remarkable. Born in the heart of England and raised amidst the cultural tapestries of Manchester and Chicago, Page's early inspirations were drawn from the realms of science fiction and the transformative art of makeup, notably Rick Baker's groundbreaking work in "An American Werewolf in London."

Venturing into Hollywood at the tender age of 17, Page dabbled in acting before realizing his true calling lay in the world of design. His academic pursuits led him to the prestigious Art Center College of Design, where he not only graduated with honors but also laid the foundation for his future endeavors in design consulting alongside Scott Robertson.

Page's illustrious career boasts of his role as a concept designer for cinematic masterpieces such as "Super 8," "Watchmen," "Star Trek," "Tron: Legacy," "Cloverfield," and the visually stunning "Avatar." His unparalleled ability to craft creatures that resonate with audiences is evident in the words of "Cloverfield" director Matt Reeves, who lauded Page's evolutionary and biological approach to creature design, referring to his workspace as the 'Wall of Terror.'

Beyond his contributions to film, Page's works have been celebrated in exhibitions like "From Page to Screen: Character and Creature Design of Neville Page" and "The Beauty in the Beast: Crafting Creatures by Neville Page" at the Oceanside Museum of Art. These exhibitions not only showcased his diverse range of works but also aimed to enlighten the public about the intricate gears involved in filmmaking.

Page's expertise and insights have also graced the television world, where he served as a judge on the SyFy series "Face Off," sharing his wisdom alongside industry stalwarts like Ve Neill and Glenn Hetrick.

As an educator, Page continues to mold the next generation of designers at institutions like the Gnomon School of Visual Effects and the Art Center College of Design. His legacy as one of the entertainment industry's most recognizable artists is cemented by accolades from peers, with JJ Abrams notably praising his creature design as "amazing."

In the ever-evolving world of film and design, Neville Page stands as a beacon of innovation, creativity, and unparalleled artistry.
