Lord of the Rings Hiking Tours

  • New Zealand Travel Blog

With magical landscapes around every corner, it can be hard to see where Middle-earth ends and the real New Zealand begins.

A country with film-star good looks, New Zealand is the only place in the world where you can lace up your hiking boots and explore actual Lord of the Rings filming locations on foot.

Lord of the Rings Hiking Tours in New Zealand

Magical Landscapes around every corner...

In the North Island, visitors can easily discover epic landscapes like Tongariro – the home of the Dark Lord Sauron. In the South Island, you’re free to imagine yourself floating down the glistening Pelorus River, just like the escaping Dwarves did in The Desolation of Smaug.

See our top picks of Lord of the Rings hiking tours in New Zealand, and get ready for your unexpected journey to begin!

LoTR hiking locations map

Deep in the heart of New Zealand’s Dual Heritage, Tongariro National Park is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, known as one of the best one-day walks in the world and one of New Zealand’s nine ‘Great Walks.’ The North Island’s Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a hike filled with sweeping desolate landscapes and emerald water-filled craters, complete with a stratovolcano at its centre. It is little wonder Sir Peter Jackson chose Mt Ngauruhoe (also known as Mt Doom) to become the home of Mordor and the Dark Lord Sauron in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. This exceptional hike takes approximately 8 hours. Pass tussock-filled landscapes and climb the ‘devil’s staircase’ to cross an alpine ridge offering incredible views of the surrounding Ruapehu area. More experienced hikers can traverse the summit of Mt Doom (Mt Ngauruhoe), which adds an extra 3 hours return to the hike, but for those wanting to experience one of the most majestic Lord of the Rings hiking tours in New Zealand, it’s well worth the journey.

Getting there: The start of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing can be reached by car or a pre-booked shuttle bus.

Tongariro Crossing

Surrounded by rugged terrain and watched over by ancient geological creations is the Putangirua Pinnacles track. This area set the scene for the unnerving trek undertaken by Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli as they sought the ‘Paths of the Dead’ in The Return of the King. Two direct hiking routes take you to the Putangirua Pinnacles, which can be undertaken in 2-4 hours.

Getting there:  The Putangirua Pinnacles track is located in the Aorangi Forest Park, just an hour’s drive from Martinborough.

First Light Travel Hiking Tour Reviews

With crystal clear waters, framed by native forest it’s easy to see why Pelorus River was chosen for the Dwarves in Barrels scene during The Desolation of Smaug. This glorious part of New Zealand is perfect for those wanting to get out and explore the great outdoors. There are plenty of hiking options to help you get the most out of your time in Pelorus. A short riverside walk gives you a glimpse of the river that was once full of Dwarves on the silver screen, while a 3-4 hour trek takes you through podocarp forests, over a swing bridge and past thundering waterfalls on a track that makes up part of New Zealand’s Te Araroa Trail - The Long Pathway, an incredible walk that runs the length of New Zealand.

Getting there:  The Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve is located between Blenheim and Nelson in New Zealand’s South Island.

Pelorus River Hiking

With it karst marble outcrops Takaka Hill was the perfect setting for Chetwood Forest in The Fellowship of the Ring – an area traversed by Hobbits and Aragorn (Strider) as they escaped from the fictional village of Bree. Inland tracks lead to the ethereal Takaka Hill which can be started at the beginning of the Abel Tasman National Park and takes approximately 2.5 – 3 hours. Those wanting to explore more Lord of the Rings hiking tours in New Zealand can do so by undertaking a multi-day hike of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track, a varied hike filled with lush forests giving way to white sandy-shores and welcoming wildlife.

Getting there:  From Motueka in the beautiful Golden Bay, it is just 20 minutes (approx) to the Abel Tasman National Park.

Takaka Hill

Glacier-carved valleys, sparkling rivers and rugged mountainous landscapes await you at Edoras, a must-do stop on any Lord of the Rings hiking tour in New Zealand. It was Mt Sunday that was transformed into the home of the Rohan people and Meduseld in The Two Towers. You can experience the raw and untouched beauty of this Lord of the Rings location with an easily accessible hike through the beautiful Hakatere Conservation Park.

Getting there:  Drive 25km (15.5 miles) along an unsealed (gravel) road before beginning your journey to the summit of Mt Sunday.

Edoras

Aoraki / Mt Cook’s celestial landscapes shone to full effect during the memorable opening scene of The Two Towers in an area so magical Peter Jackson revisited it for The Desolation of Smaug where some of the scenes were set against a backdrop of the bright turquoise Lake Pukaki. One of the best ways to experience this location is with a hike on the Hooker Valley Track. During the 4 hour trek, you can expect to encounter swing bridges, glacier lakes and incredible views of Aoraki / Mt Cook - New Zealand’s tallest mountain.

Getting there:  The Hooker Valley hike begins at the Visitor Centre, or the White Horse Hill car park.

Mt Cook National Park

Hailed as one of the ‘Eighth Wonders of the World’ the remote wilderness of the Milford Sound became the location of Fangorn Forest during The Two Towers. The stunning Milford Track that leads to Milford Sound is one of the country’s most beloved destinations and is another of New Zealand’s ‘Great Walks.’ The Milford Track can be hiked on a day or multi-day expedition and there are many options to allow you to pick the perfect Milford Track experience tailored just for you. Your options include a 5-day guided hike that allows you to truly immerse yourself in the wonder of natural New Zealand. Freedom walkers can also walk the Milford Track, but are advised to check all details of the journey before they begin. For those just wanting a taste of the ancient wilderness that became Fangorn Forest, there are also one-day hike options available. Whatever you chose, the wildlife, rainforest and spectacular falls will leave you in awe of your Lord of the Rings hiking tour in New Zealand.

Getting there:  The best way to reach the start of the Milford Track is by departing Queenstown or Te Anau.

Ultimate Lord of the Rings Road Trip

Published by bry on october 20, 2021 october 20, 2021.

lord of the rings hiking tour new zealand

The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movie trilogies were both filmed throughout New Zealand, making use of the country’s naturally fantastical landscapes.

While traveling and temporarily living in New Zealand, I was lucky enough to visit almost every Lord of the Rings filming location. Here I’ve put together the most efficient Lord of the Rings road trip that hits many of the most recognizable, quintessential filming locations.

North Island Road Trip

This portion of the road trip begins in Auckland where most international flights come in. It ends in Wellington where there is also a major airport or a ferry to the South Island where the road trip could be continued.

1. Weathertop in Port Waikato

lord of the rings hiking tour new zealand

About 1 hr. 10 mins. from Auckland. Weathertop (Amon Sûl) is the hill where the Hobbits are attacked by Ringwraiths in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring . Though the ruins were computer generated, the hill itself is very recognizable. The filming location is on private farmland but can be seen from Waikaretu Road just South of Port Waikato.

2. Hobbiton in Matamata

lord of the rings hiking tour new zealand

About 2 hrs. from Port Waikato Hobbiton was originally built in 1999 for The Lord of the Rings trilogy and mostly demolished after filming. Thankfully it was rebuilt for The Hobbit trilogy and has remained as a tourist attraction ever since. Walking into the Hobbiton Movie Set is like walking into the actual Hobbiton and is a must-do for fans and non-fans alike. Read more about Hobbiton …

Recommended non-LOTR Stop: The Tongariro Alpine Crossing

3. Mordor on Mt. Ruapehu

Mordor Filming Location

About 2.5 hrs. from Matamata The area around the Whakapapa Ski Resort on Mount Ruapehu and a rock formation named Mead’s Wall served as Mordor in quite a few scenes in all three Lord of the Rings movies. These scenes include the War of the Last Alliance in the prologue, Frodo and Sam seeing Mordor in the distance for the first time, Gollum attacking Sam and Frodo, and more. From Whakapapa you can also get an amazing view of Mount Ngauruhoe, the volcano that played the part of Mount Doom .

4. Gollum’s Pool on Mt. Ruapehu

lord of the rings hiking tour new zealand

Directly on the way to/from Whakapapa Tawhai Falls on Mount Ruapehu is also referred to as “Gollum’s Pool” for the role it played as The Forbidden Pool in Ithilien in The Two Towers . Here you can get a view of the falls from Gollum’s perspective as well as from Frodo and Faramir’s view from above.

Recommended non-LOTR Stop: Palmerston North

5. Rivendell in Kaitoke Regional Park

lord of the rings hiking tour new zealand

About 4.5 hrs. from Tawhai Falls Kaitoke Regional Park is the only Lord of the Rings filming location that still has references to its role in the movies (the road signs even say Rivendell!). There are signs and maps all over the park pointing out where buildings like Frodo’s bedroom were constructed and which trees can be seen in the movies. There’s even a reconstruction of an Elven archway dedicated to all Lord of the Rings fans.

7. Valley of Harrowdale at the Putangirua Pinnacles

The Putangirua Pinnacles in New Zealand, the filming location for The Valley of the Harrowdale / Paths of the Dead entrance in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

About 2.5 hrs. out of the way (including there and back to Kaitoke) These awe-inspiring pinnacles served as the Valley of Harrowdale where the Paths of the Dead are located in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King . There are multiple trails that allow visitors to hike into the valley or up to a lookout above the formations. These formations truly make you feel as though you are in an entirely different world. Though it is quite off the beaten track and somewhat far from the rest of these filming locations, it is absolutely worth the journey out to see it.

6. Anduin River in Upper Hut

The Hutt River in Upper Hutt, New Zealand, the filming location for the Anduin River in The Lord of the Rings.

About 25 mins. from Kaitoke Regional Park The Hutt River throughout Upper Hutt was used to portray the Anduin River in The Fellowship of the Ring when the Fellowship paddles along the Anduin in Elven canoes. You can get a great view of the Hutt River and the surrounding scenery and skip some pebbles in Poet’s Park.

8. The Shire in Wellington

Leaving the Shire in Hobbit's Hideaway Mount Victoria New Zealand

About 40 mins. from Upper Hut Mount Victoria in Wellington is home to several locations where the Hobbits were filmed leaving the Shire and escaping the Ringwraiths. It is easy to get to from anywhere in Wellington and is a great place to recreate some scenes from The Fellowship of the Ring . Mount Victoria and its popular Hobbit’s Hideaway trail will make you feel as though you’re traversing the woods surrounding the Shire. Read more about Hobbit’s Hideaway…

9. The Weta Cave in Wellington

A troll from The Hobbit outside the Weta Cave in Miramar, Wellington, New Zealand.

About 10 mins. from Hobbit’s Hideaway Although much of the filming was actually done at a studio a couple minutes down the street, Weta Workshop created the majority of the props, scenery, costumes, and special effects for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies. The Weta Cave tour has an extensive display of props from many of Peter Jackson’s movies (including LotR and The Hobbit ) and other movies the workshop has worked on. Even the gift shop is a true marvel, with tons of elaborate, handcrafted miniatures available for purchase. Book your own tour of the Weta Cave here . (Not sponsored, I just love this tour.)

South Island Road Trip

The South Island portion of this road trip could be a stand-alone trip or continued from the North Island portion by ferry. The South Island trip begins in the North in Picton, where the interisland ferry docks, and ends in Queenstown, a major city with an international airport. This trip includes the most enjoyable filming locations and passes through some amazing South Island scenery.

1. Dimrill Dale via Nelson Helicopter Tours OR Mount Owen Hike

Mount Owen Summit, the filming location of Dimrill Dale in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

About 2 or 2.5 hrs. from Picton Ferry, respectively Perhaps the most insanely difficult filming location to get to, Mount Owen played the part of Dimrill Dale in the Fellowship of the Ring when the fellowship exits Moria and mourns the death of Gandalf. There are two ways to access this location but neither is easy: by helicopter tour from Nelson or via a 9 hour advanced hike . I’ve never had the opportunity to do either, but both seem amazing depending on your budget and hiking capabilities.

Recommended non-LOTR Stop: Arthur’s Pass

2. Edoras on Mt. Sunday

Top: Mount Sunday in New Zealand, filming location of Edoras. Bottom: Edoras in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

About 7.5 hrs from Mount Owen/Nelson Mount Sunday played the role of the city of Edoras in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. The hill where Edoras was built is easily accessible via a short hike and without a tour. None of the set remains, but you can clearly see where The Golden Hall once was and can easily spot scenery from the movies. The surrounding mountains make for an unbeatable view. Read more about visiting Edoras…

Though this is quite the drive, there are many amazing places to stop in-between, including Nelson Lakes National Park, Christchurch, and Arthur’s Pass.

3. Lake-town/Lonely Mountain on Lake Pukaki

Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook, the filming location for Lake-Town in The Hobbit trilogy.

About 3.5 hrs. from Mount Sunday Though technically a filming location for The Hobbit , not Lord of the Rings , anyone visiting New Zealand’s South Island should stop to take in the view of Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook. In The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug , the beautifully blue Lake Pukaki played the Long Lake where Lake-Town was computer generated. Mount Cook, the tallest peak in New Zealand, appropriately played the part of The Lonely Mountain. You can get a great view of both Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook from the Lake Pukaki lookout, but I highly recommend doing the Hooker Valley hike to get some really amazing views of Mount Cook and its glaciers.

4. Pelennor Fields in Twizel

Pelennor Fields in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King filming location in Twizel, New Zealand.

About 15 mins. from Lake Pukaki lookout Pelennor Fields is the location outside of Minas Tirith where the largest battle of the War of the Ring took place. Most of the area where this was filmed is on private farmland, so the only way to visit is with a tour, which I would highly recommend for any dedicated LotR fans. The tour guide is extremely knowledgeable about the filming of the movies and how the town was involved. The tour includes comparison photos, reenactments of the Rohirrim’s charge, and other reenactments you can participate in, with costumes and props included. Edit: As of July 2023, it appears this tour of Pelennor Fields is no longer available. A tour of this location is still available as part of some multi-day Lord of the Rings tours. Please let me know if you know of a Pelennor Fields only tour that I can link to!

Recommended non-LOTR Stop: Wanaka

5. Ford of Bruinen in Arrowtown

Top: Arwen and Frodo fleeing from the Ringwraiths over the Bruinen River in the Lord of the Rings the Fellowship of the Ring. Bottom: The Arrow River filming location in Arrowtown, New Zealand.

About 2 hrs. 15 mins. from Twizel In The Fellowship of the Ring , Arwen (or Glorfindel in the book) carries an injured Frodo over the Bruinen River in an attempt to escape the Ringwraiths. The Arrow River just North of the Lakes District Museum in Arrowtown was used to film the majority of this scene. Though the exact location can be difficult to identify depending on the time of year, it is easy to imagine the Ringwraiths getting washed away as Arwen and Frodo flee.

6. Dimrill Dale in The Remarkables

Lake Alta in the Remarkables Mountain range, the filming location for Dimrill Dale in Lord of the Rings: The fellowship of the Ring.

About 40 mins. from Arrowtown to car park The Lake Alta area in The Remarkables mountain range also plays the part of Dimrill Dale in The Fellowship of the Ring when the Fellowship exits Moria. Aragorn stands in front of the lake as shown above, looking out towards Lothlorien. The Lake Alta track begins at The Remarkables skifield and is about 2 miles (~3.2 km) out and back. This hike is a bit steep but not difficult, and gives amazing views of the Remarkables range and the Queenstown area below. The drive up to the car park can be hazardous, so I recommend only doing this hike in good weather.

7. Ithilien in Mount Creighton

The Ithilien Lookout Lord of the Rings filming location in Mount Creighton, New Zealand.

About 45 mins. from The Remarkables On the Bob’s Cove Track in Mount Creighton is the lookout where Frodo and Sam see the men of Harad and the Oliphaunts in The Two Towers . The entire Mount Creighton area is gorgeous and you can get great views of Lake Wakatipu.

8. Isengard in Glenorchy

Top: Isengard in the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Bottom: The filming location of Isengard in Glenorchy, New Zealand.

About 45 mins. from Ithilien Lookout In my opinion, the drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy is one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand. It’s no surprise that it was chosen as the beautiful backdrop for Isengard. Though Isengard was computer generated, the mountains are easily recognizable. The “Isengard Lookout” is marked on google maps, but I recommend going over the bridge to the corner of Routeburn road for an even better view.

Would you rather road trip the North Island, South Island, or both? Think I missed something? Let me know in the comments below!

Plan your own itinerary including some LOTRs locations for a general sense of Middle-earth scenery (more on that in the sections below). Use our 23 Lord of the Rings Locations You Can’t Miss in New Zealand to add dots to the map for a self-drive Lord of the Rings tour around New Zealand.

Tongariro National Park is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its culture and natural landscape, but it was also chosen to be the backdrop in many scenes for The Lord of the Rings. More specifically, the volcanic landscape made the perfect location to depict Mordor . While many scenes were filmed around the slopes of Mt Ruapehu , New Zealand’s largest volcano, the most iconic site has to be Mt Ngauruhoe used to play “Mt Doom” itself.

Check out these Lord of the Rings locations when you are in the Tongariro National Park:

The Lord of the Rings Vacation Guide: How to Plan a LOTR Trip to New Zealand

The Lord of the Rings in Canterbury, South Island

There are two main areas in the expansive Canterbury region of the South Island that were used during the filming of The Lord of the Rings: Mt Sunday and Twizel.

Mt Sunday – Edoras

Getting more off the beaten track, Mt Sunday is home to one of The Lord of the Rings most stunning filming locations. An entire set for Edoras was constructed atop of the mountain found about 2 hours drive out of Christchurch   in the Ashburton Lakes on the foothills of the Southern Alps.

Mt Sunday can be accessed by car (be aware that much of the area is gravel roads). Alternatively, tours with Hassle-Free Tours depart from Christchurch and Methven taking you to the location – more details on  Viator  and  Tripadvisor . A walking track takes you up the mountain providing endless photo opportunities.

Twizel – Pelennor Fields

This high country town in the South Island was chosen to depict the majority of the scenes for the Battle of Pelennor Fields . The sweeping grassy fields with the backdrop of the Southern Alps was the perfect location for Lord of the Rings battle scenes.

The fields used in the filming itself is on private land, so access is only available on a Lord of the Rings guided tour with One Ring Tours in Twizel . Nevertheless, that also means the opportunity to get photos with props and costumes! [Update: One Ring Tours is no longer operating. We will update this page if another tour becomes available].

Leaving Ohakune you will first reach the military town of Waiouru, home to the National Army Museum an incredible collection of New Zealand’s military history and a memorial to its servicemen. Taking a night tour of Zealandia wildlife eco-sanctuary is an unforgettable experience and one that comes highly recommended. A conservation success and safe haven for some of New Zealand's rarest native animals, Zealandia is home to many remarkable species of birds, reptiles and insects living wild within a beautiful 225 hectare (one square mile) valley, just 10 minutes from the central city. Your tour begins with an interactive exhibition before you walk through the gates of Zealandia predator-exclusion fence into the sanctuary. Your guide will then lead you on a torch-light walk through the native New Zealand bush. Possible sights include Kiwi foraging on the forest floor, tuatara hunting for food, glowworms shining, tiny Maud Island frogs in their enclosure, pateke (brown teal) ducks feeding at night and kaka (parrots) coming in to roost. Zealandia is one of the best places to see kiwi in the wild. Lord of the Rings Scenic Explorer - Day 6

With some of the best Lord of the Rings tours Wellington has to offer, you will not be disappointed on this tour. You'll visit local filming locations, view a short documentary showing the filmmaking exploits of Peter Jackson and his remarkable team and be guided through the sights and sounds of the Weta Workshop in Miramar. This is followed by a fascinating 'Window into the workshop' exhibition, showing film props and weaponry, with the artists themselves describing how the artefacts were created.

Wellington, home to New Zealand’s centre of government has a largely cosmopolitan feel. Often referred to as ‘mini-Melbourne’, this (self described) windy city is a melting pot of art, culture, food and fashion. Quirky laneway bars, underground art shows, and hipster eateries make up its inner city vibe, while a host of sandy beaches outside the urban bustle bring a cheerful holiday feel. Take a turn on the boardwalk en-route to Te Papa , New Zealand's national museum or catch a historic cable car from Lambton Quay and soak up the city sights. Wander the boutiques on Cuba St and check out the aptly named ‘Beehive’ off Parliament House. Play hobbit for day and book a tour through Weta Workshop, the Oscar Award winning design studio for Lord Of The Rings. If eating is your thing, drive an hour out of town to Martinborough and experience some of the region's best food and wine. For those interested in New Zealand's native species, a trip to Zealandia is a must, the world's first fully fenced eco-sanctuary. Then kick off your evening in style - search ‘Metro Eats’ to choose from a plethora of the city’s best restaurants to dine.

Lord of the Rings Scenic Explorer - Day 7

The 92 km journey between Wellington and Picton takes around 3 hours and has been described as 'one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the world'. Leaving Wellington Harbour you pass many interesting points such as Pencarrow Head on top of which is New Zealand's oldest lighthouse (1859). Red Rocks is home to a seal colony and Oterangi Bay is the site which recorded the country's highest ever wind speed of 268 kph (167 mph). To the east is the turquoise waters of the South Pacific Ocean and to the west the towering Kaikoura Ranges. Fly southwest before entering the Kahurangi National Park for a landing on Mt Owen. Filming was undertaken here for 10 days with the result being one of the most moving moments in the film.  It was here, distraught at the loss of Gandalf, the remaining members of the Fellowship escaped the mines of Moria and threw themselves to the ground in their grief (optional – talk to us about adding in this flight if you’d like to experience it).

Next up on the road you can explore Westport and Mangatini Falls on the Charming Creek Walkway (small detour). Next perhaps check out Cape Foulwind. Upon arrival in Punakaiki, you can explore the pancake rocks and blowholes situated right next to the village; a bizarre, rugged, rocky landscape which impresses thousands of visitors each year with its powerful forces of nature!

Moria East Gate/Dimrill Dale (Mount Owen) (Optional – can only be reached by helicopter)

281km, 3 hours 45 minutes driving

This morning you will detour 30 minutes North to Underworld Adventures in Charleston. Here they will kit you up for the trip of a lifetime through their glowworm caves. The journey starts with a trip on their rainforest train, a walk through the rainforest and a journey into their large limestone cave. Following this you will lie on a tube and drift under the light of thousands upon thousands of glow worms on the cave ceiling. This particular cave has more glowworms than any other cave in NZ and the experience is truly cathartic.

Driving South down the coast from Punakaiki, check out the stunning Hokitika Gorge with its beautiful bright blue waters and surrounding native forest. Arrive in Franz Josef Glacier this afternoon/evening, a beautiful village nestled at the base of the mighty Southern Alps.

Please note there is the option to do a glow worm cave tour (without rafting or getting wet!) if you would prefer.

The White Mountains (Ered Nimrais) from Gondor to Rohan

350km, 5 hours driving

Today you will take a journey south through the beautiful towering mountains of the Haast Pass, as well as the huge gleaming blue waters of Lake Wānaka and Lake Hawea, toward New Zealand’s adventure capital; Queenstown. Along the way you’ll enjoy views of waterfalls and take in the sights and sounds of the centuries-old native forest.

Also along the way is the picturesque lakeside holiday town of Wānaka. Looking across the lake, you will see the backdrop used for Gandalf’s flight to Rohan with Gwaihir, after his rescue from Orthanc. You also have the option today of walking the Diamond Lake walking track to see this location up close.

Following this, conquer New Zealand’s highest altitude highway and possibly stop in at one of New Zealand’s oldest pubs; the Cardrona Hotel, for a drink. Make your descent down the mountain into Queenstown where you will be bombarded by familiar Lord of the Rings scenery, including the spectacular Remarkables Mountain Range, another of the unforgiving landscapes used to portray the journey through the slopes of Dimrill Dale.

Today you’ll enjoy a Glenorchy 4WD safari packed with breathtaking Lord Of The Rings filming locations and thrilling 4WD action. Along this magical journey, you will travel along one of New Zealand’s most scenic drives. As well as visiting the filming locations for Isengard you will also discover the Ithilien Camp, Lothlorien & Fanghorn forest, Battle of Amon Hen and many more.

After you return to Queenstown in the early afternoon, the rest of the day is free to spend as you wish.

263 km, 3 hours 15 minutes driving

You leave Central Otago today through the Kawarau Gorge and Cromwell where you can make a stop en route at a local fruit shop to try real fruit ice cream and perhaps sample New Zealand famous manuka honey products. From there, cross the Lindis Pass to the Mackenzie Country and travel alongside the stunning turquoise Lake Pukaki towards Aoraki/Mt Cook Village.

Spend the afternoon in Aoraki/Mount Cook Village, nestled in the Southern Alps. Here you can enjoy several nature walks in the national park such as the famous Hooker Valley track. Another option in summer months is boat ride on Tasman Lake around icebergs to the terminal face of the glacier!

Minas Tirith Mountains

*Please note that the Pelennor Fields (near Twizel – en route today) is no longer accessible as tours here no longer operate and the site is on private land.

357km, 4.5 hours driving

Today you head to our final destination on your epic journey through Middle Earth; Edoras! The filming location for Edoras is at the remote and beautiful Mt Potts High Country station, home of Mt Sunday. Hassle Free Tours will show you how this peaceful mountain was transformed into Edoras, the capital city of the Rohan people in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Immerse yourself in the natural, unspoilt beauty of this breathtaking area with its sparkling clear lakes, glistening blue rivers and fresh, crisp mountain air.

Following this tour, you will travel to Christchurch.

Helms Deep Mountains

Today you will transfer to your onward travel arrangements. We trust that you have enjoyed your epic journey through Middle Earth with us!

After arrival at the Lord of the Rings 10-Day New Zealand Tour in Wellington, you’ll check-in at the tour Hotel from 14:00 to explore the city before meeting the tour leader. We recommend dining at one of Viggo’s favourite places in the Green Parrot Restaurant. The next three nights of accommodation will be in Wellington.

Day 1: Wellywood Day

Starting on day one and finishing on day nine, you will enjoy a fully-inclusive breakfast each morning before you depart for the days’ activities. Day one of the tour will start with experiencing the movie capital of New Zealand in Miramar . Visit the Windows into Workshop tour to marvel at the spectacular weapon and armour displays from the movies, purchase a souvenir and watch behind the scenes footage detailing the Weta company’s history. Experience the Wellywood location as a guided tour shows you some of the special effects used in some of the biggest movies ever. Experience the Weta Cave before heading to the Roxy Theatre for lunch on the house. The latter part of day 1 consists of visiting the filming location of the Get off the Road scene featured in The LOTR, offering stunning views of the city.

Day 2: Presentation day with Daniel Reeve

Lord of the Rings Tour: Map Maker

Day two of the tour won’t involve as much travelling,  as we enjoy an extensive and interactive presentation from Daniel Reeve , The LOTR and The Hobbit Calligrapher and Cartographer. For those visiting during the winter months, day two will also include a presentation from an additional special movie guest. Following the performances you’ll have ample time to explore the attractions nearby such as the Te Papa Museum , watching a movie at the Special Embassy Theatre or experiencing the stunning scenery around Wellington.

Day 3: Wellington to Nelson

After finishing breakfast on day 3, we depart the North island and make our way to the South Island for the next part of the adventure. We’ll set sail from Wellington on the Inter-Island Ferry to the Southern island which takes around 3,5 hours. Lunch will be served (included with the tour), and we’ll then head for Nelson City as our next destination. While travelling to the city, you might like to stop off to see the filming location of the famous scene where the Elves travelled in barrels along the river. As an optional extra you might also like to get a closer look at this location taking a kayak down the river. The day ends with an inclusive stay at an accommodation in Nelson.

Day 4: Nelson Day

Day 4 is yours to explore at your leisure. We’d highly recommend the famous helicopter ride which showcases the LOTR sites located South of Rivendell (at an additional cost). The next step of the tour begins with heading back into Nelson City to meet the creators of the famous One Ring . While there you’ll meet Halfdan Hansen, Jens Hansen’s son to marvel at his breathtaking Hobbit and LOTR jewellery. Night four is in Nelson accommodation.

Day 5: Nelson to Christchurch

Day five will commence with an early start following breakfast to head South towards the Kaikoura Coast . While on the route you’ll stop for a second breakfast (or lunch) to witness the beautiful fur seals having fun. Day five boasts some fantastic photo opportunities, and you’ll also get to enjoy an RCT coach quiz. Finally, we depart for our next stop at Christchurch, where we spend the night before a busy day ahead.

Day 6: Edoras

Lord of the Rings Tour: Edoras

With an early morning departure, we’ll embark for the filming location of Edoras , set upon a hill in a valley of the White Mountains. Making our way up to the top of the area is where we find the site of the Golden Hall, and here is where we’ll fly our Rohan Banner. Afterwards, we experience Tekapo and Pukaki, the breathtaking mountain fed-lakes before witnessing the highest mountain in New Zeland – Mt. Cook. The evening will include an inclusive dinner while enjoying a presentation from a Hobbit-inspired special guest,  before settling into the Twizel accommodation.

Day 7: Pelennor Fields

Lord of the Rings Tour / Swordfight

Day seven kicks off with a visit to the Pelennor Fields , the location that’s known for the powerful sound of 250 horses charging after King Theoden made his battle speech. After experiencing this location, we move on to the Lake-town filming location before sitting down for lunch in Omarama. Following lunch, you might like to try your hand at archery before unwinding in your accommodation in Cromwell.

Day 8: Arrowtown, Queenstown

Venturing deeper into Middle-earth, we visit a variety of LOTR filming locations at Mavora Lakes. Purchase a picnic lunch to take along as we explore The calling up of Shadowfax, The Silverlode bridge, The Orc funeral pyre, Fangorn Forest,  Nen Hithoel, The log which concealed Merry & Pippin before Frodo left the fellowship and where Sam and Frodo paddled away on the next stage of their journey. You’ll have a wealth of astonishing scenery to take in here before being transported to Queenstown in the afternoon. Accommodation will remain in Queenstown for the final three nights.

Day 9: Queenstown

Our next destination is in Arrowtown, and along the way, we take a route which follows the direction of a gold mining road, and we continue up the Arrow River. One of the highlights of Arrowtown is the filming location of where the One Ring dropped among the Gladden fields . You might like to try Bungy-jumping (at an extra cost) before heading to the Elements Restaurant for an inclusive farewell dinner.

Day 10: Optional Activities

Day ten is all about you. After enjoying breakfast, you might like to experience some optional Lord of the Rings activities. Ride the Dart river jet which heads past The Hobbiton movie set , or perhaps a helicopter flight over the Ford of Bruinen . You could enjoy a hot air balloon drive, or keep your feet on the ground with a Routeburn Track guided walk. If retail therapy is more appealing, then Queenstown shopping is the perfect treat. Your tour guide will be able to discuss all of the options available, and help with a booking should you wish.

Departure day

Waking up to the final breakfast of the tour will see your Middle-earth journey coming to an end. As you depart from Queenstown, you will require a domestic airfare to return to Auckland, followed by an international flight for your journey home from Auckland.

10 Most Romantic Destinations To Visit In New Zealand

  • New Zealand offers breathtaking landscapes with dramatic mountainsides, fjords, and volcanic landscapes.
  • Romantic destinations include Milford Sound, Roy's Peak, Hobbiton Movie Set, and Waiheke Island.
  • Activities range from cruises, hiking, and Instagramming to wining and dining, sunbathing, and exploring glowworm caves.

New Zealand is one of the most beautiful and arguably one of the most romantic destinations in the Pacific. The country is famous for its dramatic landscapes, which include everything from New Zealand's most picturesque alpine lakes to the other-worldly volcanic landscapes in Tongariro National Park .

New Zealand promises endless beauty and many stark contrasts, but while it is no Venice, its landscapes are breathtaking. Here are some of the most romantic destinations in New Zealand worth visiting, whether on a honeymoon or a loved-up vacation with that special someone.

Milford Sound

Milford Sound is by far the most popular fjord in New Zealand. It offers some of the most dramatic landscapes with sheer mountainsides plummeting straight down into the fjord.

Milford Sound has plenty of cruises that explore the fjord and its cascading waterfalls (including the Instrammable Bowen Falls ). Plan in advance and spend the night in the fjord (accommodation at Milford Sound is very limited).

  • Activities: Cruises, Scenic Driving, Hiking

Related: Why Milford Sound Is All The More Ethereal In The Rain

Roy's Peak, Wanaka

Roy's Peak is one of the most Instagrammed locations in New Zealand. Visitors need to hike the Roy's Peak Track to the top of the mountain overlooking Lake Wanaka in the center of the South Island.

Queues are rare in New Zealand, but like Norway's Troll's Tongue, there can be lines of hikers waiting for their turn for the perfect Instagram pic.

  • Activities: Hiking, Instagramming

Hobbiton Movie Set

The Hobbiton Movie Set is perhaps the most romantic destination in New Zealand (at least for Lord of the Rings fans). The Hobbiton Movie Set is a fully-developed tourist attraction with Hobbit holes and the Green Dragon (where visitors enjoy a feast fit for a hobbit).

Hobbit holes are currently being excavated, so soon, they will be more than just facades, and visitors will be able to tour through them.

  • Activities: Instagramming, Feasting

Related: Visitors Will Be Able To Tour A Hobbit Hole For The First Time: Here's What To Expect

The Milford Track

The Milford Track is one of the very few long-distance hiking trails in New Zealand that needs to be booked in advance.

The Milford Track is arguably the most beautiful trail in New Zealand, and the number of hikers permitted on the hike is very restricted (plan at least a year in advance). The trail goes from the pristine Lake Te Anua, through lush rain forests, over mountains, to Milford Sound.

  • Activities: Hiking

Related: Why New Zealand's Milford Track Is Called The "Finest Walk In The World"

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Did you know

  • Trivia The filming of the Helm's Deep sequences was so grueling and went on for so many months, that Jackson gave all the extras a free T-shirt to commemorate the experience. There were so many extras that they would often recognize each other other extras in New Zealand's main cities, by wearing the shirts. On the front of the shirt was the statement "I Survived Helm's Deep", with the letter M is struck out, indicating "hell" of the experience. Two versions existed. One was in black, with red printing on the back that read "Lord of the Rings Uruk-Hai Battalion", The other was in blue with silver printing on the back that read "The Lord of the Rings "Elf Regiment".
  • Goofs Just as Ugluk and the troop of Uruk-Hai stop and Uruk asks, "What is it? What do you smell?" one of the Uruk-Hai fails to notice a bump in the terrain and goes sprawling to the floor.

Frodo : I can't do this, Sam.

Sam : I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.

Frodo : What are we holding onto, Sam?

Sam : That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.

The award-winning production of The Lord of the Rings — A Musical Tale will open in New Zealand.

Directed by Paul Hart, the production began life at the Watermill Theatre in England in the summer of 2023, where it received a WhatsOnStage Award for Best Regional Production.

Inspired by the novels by J R R Tolkien, the musical has book and lyrics by Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus and music by A.R. Rahman, Värttinä, and Christopher Nightingale.

This musical adaptation was first performed at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto in 2006, which was followed by a run at the Drury Lane in London’s West End in 2007.

It will have its New Zealand premiere at the Civic in Auckland, where it will play for a limited season from 5 November 2024. Tickets will go on sale soon.

An American production is also due to run from 19 July to 1 September, and is due to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the publication of The Fellowship of the Ring , the first book in the  Lord of the Rings trilogy, which was published on 29 July 1954.

‘The greatest show on Middle-earth comes home to Middle-earth!” declared Fredrica Drotos today (though today in the UK is tomorrow in New Zealand, but hey ho. Drotos, Middle-earth Enterprises’ steward of brand and licensing, added: “We are very much looking forward to sharing the Hobbits’ epic re-telling with all our friends there; when The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale , premieres in Auckland, New Zealand this November.”

THE LORD OF THE RINGS - A MUSICAL TALE to Transfer to New Zealand This Fall

The Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed in New Zealand.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater's upcoming production of The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale will transfer this fall to The Civic Theatre in Auckland, New Zealand, beginning November 5. Ever since the release of Peter Jackson ’s Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, New Zealand has become the embodiment of Middle-earth, making the production’s journey to Auckland a homecoming for the story. This engagement follows a highly anticipated US premiere at CST this summer, directed by Paul Hart and running July 19‑September 1, 2024 in The Yard.

LATEST NEWS

“We’re thrilled that Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s production of The Lord of The Rings will continue its journey in Auckland,” said Artistic Director Edward Hall . “The Chicago-based ensemble that Paul and our team have put together promises to take us on an extraordinary adventure through Middle-earth, and we look forward to sharing their incredible work with audiences in New Zealand.”

Annie Dundas, Director Destination at Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, shared, “This production not only celebrates our unique connection to Middle‑earth but also showcases Auckland as a vibrant hub for world-class theatre. We look forward to sharing this extraordinary experience with locals and visitors alike.” Glen Crighton, Acting Director Performing Arts at Auckland Live, continues, “I’m excited that The Civic will be hosting the Australasian premiere of The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale. The iconic status of Tolkien’s epic tale can’t be understated, and we look forward to welcoming local and international audiences alike into Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s own iconic venue to embark on what promises to be a remarkable theatrical experience.”

Based on J.R.R. Tolkien ’s beloved trilogy, with book and lyrics by Shaun McKenna (Maddie, La Cava) and Matthew Warchus (Groundhog Day) and original music by Academy Award winner A.R. Rahman (Bombay Dreams, Slumdog Millionaire), Finnish folk band Värttinä, and Tony Award winner Christopher Nightingale (Matilda the Musical), this theatrical event celebrates community, courage, and camaraderie to create an unforgettable experience for longtime fans and newcomers alike.

“The greatest show on Middle‑earth comes home to Middle‑earth!” proclaimed Fredrica Drotos, of Middle-earth Enterprises. “We are very much looking forward to sharing the Hobbits’ epic re‑telling with all our friends there when The Lord of the Rings - A Musical Tale premieres in Auckland, New Zealand this November.”

As the Hobbits celebrate Bilbo Baggins’ eleventy-first birthday in the Shire, he gifts his nephew Frodo his most precious belonging—a gold ring. This fateful moment launches Frodo on a legendary and perilous quest across Middle-earth to the darkest realms of Mordor, to vanquish evil with his loyal Fellowship. The folk‑inspired score is performed live by the company onstage, weaving together original music with storytelling. The US premiere this summer coincides with the 70th anniversary of the publication of The Fellowship of the Ring, the first book in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which debuted July 29, 1954.

“We are delighted to share Director Paul Hart’s imagining of The Lord of the Rings on stage with New Zealand audiences before it embarks on its journey to entertain audiences around the world,” said Kevin Wallace on behalf of the producers. “This production that originated in the English Shires, before its US premiere in Chicago, comes to Auckland where we invite New Zealand to join us for Bilbo Baggins’ Long‑expected Party.”

The waitlist for Auckland tickets is now open at www.LOTRonstage.com .
