Kickstands come with lots of options for adjustability and different weights. Here’s what you need to know when choosing a kickstand.

Single- or Double-Legged

A single-leg kickstand is the style you're likely most familiar with. It has a single leg that extends outward to prop your bicycle upright. These kickstands are either placed on the rear of a bicycle and clamp directly onto the chainstay, or in the center of a bike’s frame, attaching directly to a mounting bracket. Single-leg kickstands are best suited for basic road, commuter, and mountain bikes .

A double-leg kickstand, on the other hand, turns your bicycle into a sort of tripod, propping one wheel off the ground and suspending it. This is achieved by the kickstand’s placement at the center of the bike’s frame. Double-leg kickstands are best for heavier rides, like touring and e-bikes .

Center- or Rear-Mount

After you decide on a single- or double-leg kickstand, think about where on the bike you’d like to install it. Center-mount kickstands are installed in the center of the bike’s frame, while rear-mount kickstands attach to the back of a bike, usually on the chainstay. Keep in mind: Double-legged, center-mounted kickstands are best suited to handle heavy weights. Most bicycles have pre-installed holes or plates in the center frame for mounting, but if your ride doesn’t have one, don’t fret—most kickstands come packaged together with all the tools and brackets you'll need to clamp them on.

The last thing to keep in mind when buying a kickstand is the product’s intended fit. All kickstands on this list show the range of bicycle sizes they can handle. This sizing range is based on the wheelbase of a bike, which measures the distance between both centers of the front and rear axles. If you’re unsure if a kickstand can be used with your bike, check your bicycle’s wheelbase.

How We Evaluated

To find the best kickstands that money can buy, we spent countless hours researching the most frequently recommended products from professional critics and scoped out user-recommended items from message boards and various biking blogs. We also researched the components of what makes a kickstand reliable, and what sorts of features and adjustable options exist on the market. We then sifted through thousands of user ratings and reviews of products from popular retailers like Amazon and REI, taking note of how each item performed based on feedback. These kickstands are the best of the best, keeping your ride reliably upright and safe from falling.

  • Fits: 24- to 29-inch bikes
  • Material: Aluminum and plastic
  • Weight: 0.56 pounds

This Amazon best-selling kickstand easily assembles with a single screw and will fit on any bike’s chainstay, regardless of whether or not your bike has a mounting plate. It comes packaged with the pieces you need to attach its bracket, and features a spring-loaded latch that’s used to instantly adjust the height of your kickstand without requiring additional tools.

The kickstand also has a non-slip sole that keeps it from sliding when propped up. Over 13,000 reviewers give this kickstand a 4.5- out of 5-star average rating.

  • Fits: 24- to 28-inch bikes
  • Weight: 1.2 pounds

This double-leg kickstand is one of the most affordable models on the market. It’s got two legs attached to the same folding mechanism, so you can stand them both with one swift kick, and it’ll close without obstructing your chain.

Mounting plate or not, you’ll be able to install the kickstand with the packaged mount bracket and screws. Both legs are also height-adjustable, making it perfect for use on uneven terrain.

  • Fits: 24-inch bikes and up
  • Material: Aluminum and rubber
  • Weight: 0.52 pounds

If your bicycle already has a center mounting bracket and you don't need additional attachments, this piece from Schwinn will save you some cash. This kickstand has a rubber foot pad to lend support on wet or uneven surfaces when it’s propped up, and it comes with all the screws you need to assemble it. It also features markings along its shaft so you can cut it down to give the kickstand an exact fit for your bike.

  • Fits: Up to 27-inch bikes
  • Material: Aluminum and polymer
  • Weight: 0.88 pounds

Don’t want to use any tools to install a kickstand on your bike? Fine—just reach for the FlashStand RX instead. This kickstand can be used to prop your bike upright by simply placing it underneath the bottom bracket. The stand neatly folds up for easy transport and weighs just under a pound, making carrying it a cinch. Use it for maintenance while on the road, or just to keep your ride propped up during roadside breaks.

  • Weight: 1.16 pounds

E-bikes are often heavier than your average road or mountain bike, which makes finding a reliable kickstand for them a bit tough. This one from Lumintrail is hefty enough to handle a heavier ride, according to several reviewers, with one even pointing out it can hold their 45-pound e-bike with ease.

Each leg has an adjustable height, which is great on uneven surfaces, and you can install it without already having a mounting plate, thanks to an included adapter.

  • Fits: 12- to 18-inch wheels, depending on the product
  • Material: Carbon steel
  • Weight: 0.43 pounds

After your child ditches the training wheels, why not replace that training set with a rear kickstand? This particular item is made with carbon steel and attaches directly to the rear axle. It’s able to fit 12-, 14-, 16-, and 18-inch wheels, but prices vary by size, so double-check your tire size before buying.

  • Material: Aluminum
  • Weight: 2.86 pounds

If you’re riding a hefty bike and plan on packing heavy for, say, a lengthy camping trip or similar adventure, you’re going to need a kickstand that can hold all of that weight. Reach for one that can hold an e-bike, precious cargo, and then some. This jumbo double-leg kickstand can hold up to 220 pounds, even with one bicycle wheel suspended in the air.

kickstand for trek bike

7 Reasons Many Bikes Don’t Have Kickstands (And What to Do)

If you’re a novice cyclist or someone who’s just beginning to upgrade, you may be surprised that a lot of high-end bikes don’t have kickstands. After all, if you’re upgrading why lose a feature?

I’ve personally used bikes with and without kickstands, and in this article I’ll explain why some bikes have them and other don’t.

Below is a list of the topics I’ll cover. Let’s get into it.

7 Reasons Many Bikes Don’t Have Kickstands

1. kickstands increase the risk of crashing.

Kickstands add a sticking point on the bike, which increases your overall risk of crashing. Anything protruding from the bike can be an issue, depending on how and where you’re riding.

A kickstand can also open up while you’re riding. Whether it’s jogged loose by impact or accidentally knocked when you’re off the pedal for a second. Either way, it’s risky and could cause a wreck.

Mountain bikers are even more wary about kickstands compared to folks that ride on the road. The last thing you want on a tight single-track trail is to get your kickstand stuck on something, causing you to take a spill.

Protrusions should be minimized, and a kickstand is a major one that can be taken out of the equation entirely .

2. Kickstands Add Unnecessary Weight

As someone who has done extensive bicycle touring , this is probably the biggest reason I personally don’t use kickstands, other than the fact that my bike simply came without one.

People pay thousands of dollars to cut a few ounces out of their bike frame. Road and racing bikes, in particular, demand a premium price for shaving off a few grams here and there.

Why would someone investing seriously in a lightweight bike add that weight back with a kickstand?

Extra weight is unwanted for a bicycle, and kickstands add a significant amount while only adding a little bit of convenience. In the end, the extra weight is just another annoyance associated with the stand.

3. Kickstands Increase The Risk of Bike Damage

In addition to crashing your bike due to snagging, you can also damage the frame with a kickstand.

The area where a kickstand connects can damage the frame. In most cases, this won’t hurt the structural integrity, although that’s a possibility. On the other hand, it can flatten the tubing on your chainstays and scratch the finish.

And, as counter-intuitive as it seems, kickstands are less stable than any other way of setting your bike down. Most cyclists without kickstands on their bike, will park it up against something (e.g. a building, tree, etc.) or just place it on it’s side on the ground. If you’re in a city/town, then bike racks are often pretty easy to find.

All of these alternative methods are pretty much foolproof, unlike a kickstand, which can buckle, wobble, or sink into soft ground (all of which can cause your bike to fall over).

4. Kickstands Make the Bike Less Aerodynamic

Kickstands hang off the chainstays of your bike and block air, meanwhile, most riders spend extra money on more aerodynamic parts. Once again kickstands prove to be a bit counter-productive.

That’s a big no-no on a high-end bike, where every piece is designed to reduce wind resistance. The majority of kickstands just block air and make the bike slower, even if you don’t take into account the weight of it.

5. Kickstands are Ugly

Let’s face it: kickstands look terrible on a bike.

They can ruin the clean lines of a great frame. Somehow they just end up making the bike look less impressive as a whole.

Call it vanity, but no one thinks their bike looks better with a kickstand attached to the frame.

6. Kickstands Could Contribute to Injuries

Kickstands may not be the main contributor to injuries, but they’re in a good spot to complicate a crash. They’re called kickstands because they’re within foot range from the pedals after all.

It’s unlikely to be the main source of injury during a bike wreck, but no one appreciates a smack in the shin or ankle.

BMX riders are put at risk more than other riders with a kickstand. Doing tricks with an extra point to catch on to things is a bad idea.

7. Other Cyclists Might Judge You

As much as I frown upon “cycling snobbery”, a lot of cyclists consider kickstands a sure sign of a “newbie” . So if you want to blend in with the crowd, and avoid sideways glances from other riders, I’d leave the kickstand off your bike.

One reason for this, is that most high-end bikes from brands like Trek, Specialized , or Giant, don’t come with kickstands pre-installed.

And if you ask a crowd of cyclists why they don’t use kickstands, you’d probably end up getting a mix of all of the reasons above.

However, there is one group of cyclists where the value of kickstands is debated, and that would be among bicycle touring and bikepacking cyclists , who sometimes do like to use kickstands (though I personally don’t use a kickstand on my touring bike).

What Kinds of Bikes Don’t Have Kickstands?

Most high-end bicycles don’t have kickstands installed. That includes every category of bike, from road bikes to BMX to mountain bikes. In short: if you put down a good chunk of change for a bike, it’s not likely to come with a kickstand.

Those cyclists who feel the need to move beyond retail and entry-level bikes are often surprised that a more expensive bike doesn’t have a kickstand. As bikes get more expensive, it’s often hard to justify the drawbacks. They’re just a hindrance to most styles of riding.

What Kinds of Bikes Do Have Kickstands?

The majority of retail-level bicycles, like those found at Wal-Mart, do come with kickstands. Many mid-range bikes in the $400-700 range still include them as well, but those serious about riding usually take them off once the bike is home.

You’ll also find kickstands on children’s bikes.

And to be fair, a kickstand isn’t a sign a bike is terrible , they’re just not associated with high-quality bikes.

You will sometimes see kickstands on touring and bikepacking bikes, which can be rather expensive in their own right. They’re usually installed after purchase, and it’s best to use a two-footed stand that goes under the bike. These bikes usually carry plenty of weight, so a single foot isn’t a good idea due to the torque it can apply to your frame.

Do You Need a Kickstand for a Bike?

A kickstand isn’t necessary. The benefit of a kickstand is the small convenience of propping your bike up, so that you don’t have to find a rack, or somewhere to lean it or set it down. However, kickstands are not essential and you can easily get by without one on your bike.

And honestly, how often are you going to stop your bike and need the kickstand anyway? Most of the time your bike will be at home, where a stand or wall rack would be a better idea. A bike up on a kickstand takes a significant amount of valuable garage space.

And when you arrive at a cycling destination, where are you gonna go? Odds are, you’re probably going to want to lock the bike up to prevent theft. Anywhere you can lock a bike you can stand it up, and anywhere that’s safe enough to just rest the bike on the kickstand is usually also somewhere you can gently lay the bike down.

That said, they’re convenient for some people, and it’s your bike. You’ll never need a kickstand but go right ahead if you think that the convenience is worth the drawbacks.

How to Stand-up a Bike Without a Kickstand

If you’ve decided to ditch the kickstand, you may need some help with how/where to stash your bike without the kickstand.

You have a few options. Here’s a quick break down:

Lean the Bike on Something

Probably the most common way to stand up a bike is just to lean it on a pole, wall, or other convenient vertical surfaces. A lock will keep a bike standing when you use something thin like a pole or sapling.

You might be surprised at how little you end up needing a kickstand, particularly if you’re an A-to-B commuter.

Lay It Down

The damage done to a bike by laying it down is minor and cosmetic if any at all. It’s pretty simple to just gently lower the bike to the ground for a moment. Especially on grassy areas, which tend to be pretty soft.

When you lay your bike down, however, you should always leave the drive-side up. That means laying it on its left side in most cases, just to avoid any possible damage to the cassette, chain, and derailleur.

You can also flip the bike upside down, resting it on the seat and handlebars. Unfortunately, you’ll inevitably end up scraping up some parts of your bike if you rest it this way, but I confess, I’ve put my bike in this position many times.

Be mindful of which parts are making contact, but in the majority of cases, cosmetic scuffing of the shifters and seat is the outcome.

How to Install a Kickstand on a Bike

If I can’t convince you not to use a kickstand, then I may as well help you.

Here’s a quick guide to installing a kickstand on a bike that doesn’t have one already installed.

There are a couple of different mounting types, in the video above the bike has a spot between the chainstays where you screw the kickstand in. These are easy to install with hand tools, just push the bolt through the hole and tighten it up.

Others attach to the chainstay bars. They’re an inferior option as far as stability, but not every bike has the bracket used in the above video. In particular, high-end bikes lack a mounting bracket for a kickstand.

In that case, you’ll want to refer to this video:

A bike trailer can also be attached to the chainstays. Read our article about attaching bike trailers if you want to learn more.

Some kickstand setups come with extra brackets designed to help prevent frame damage as well, and if you have the option you should always opt to use them.

Kickstands are easy to install at home, but you need to make sure the height is right to minimize the chance of the bike falling over. Adjust the length until the bike is as stable as possible, try moving the front wheel around to make sure the weight distribution is safe.

Installing a kickstand is simple enough for most cyclists to manage if you decide to take this route.

Now, let’s quickly cover a few FAQs related to this topic:

Do Mountain Bikes Come with Kickstands?

Mid-to-high-end mountain bikes generally don’t come with kickstands. But cheaper mountain bikes, especially those sold at big box retailers, often do come with kickstands. However, if the bike is going to be used for trail riding, the kickstand will usually be removed. They cause to many risks for mountain biking.

For the most part, a kickstand is a massive detriment to mountain biking. For light trail riding, they may not interfere, but if you’re new to the sport, it’s best to remove your kickstand when off-road.

Do Road Bikes Come with Kickstands?

Road bikes almost always come without a kickstand. The added weight and less aerodynamic profile are counterproductive to a road bike’s design goals of fast and smooth riding on pavement.

For road bikes, a kickstand doesn’t make sense. Most people go on long rides or use them as a commuter. In both cases, a kickstand is more of a liability than a benefit, since you’re probably locking your bike on both ends of the ride anyways.

Do BMX Bikes Come with Kickstands?

BMX bikes, as a rule, don’t come with kickstands at any price point. Since they’re made for racing and performing tricks, the kickstand would interfere and become an injury risk to the rider.

You’d be hard-pressed to find any BMX bike with a kickstand, even one installed by a rider after they bought the bike. A BMX bike is arguably the worst type of bike to use a kickstand on, due to the injury risk when used for tricks, races, etc.

Do Trek Bikes Come with Kickstands?

The majority of Trek bicycles don’t come with a kickstand, but there are some models that do. As of 2021, they appear to have 39 models listed that do include a kickstand, primarily bikes on the lower end of Trek’s price spectrum.

Trek actually serves as a good example of which bikes have kickstands. The low end of their line mostly has kickstands since they’re aimed more towards casual riders. Meanwhile, bikes higher up in their pricing don’t have kickstands at all.

All About The Best Kickstands for Bicycle Touring

' src=

I was close-minded about kickstands for a long time.

I intentionally left the kickstand box unchecked on the order form for my KOGA WorldTraveller-S touring bike . I hadn’t needed one for the previous 10 years of touring, so why would I need it now? But when I picked up the bike there was one fitted. KOGA said, “just try it Alee, if you really don’t like it, you can throw it away”.

I reluctantly accepted their request.

Skip forward a few months into my trip and I broke a bolt on my new kickstand. I had to remove it for a while, and it was then that I realised how much I missed having it. I use it every time I get off the bike; to snack, to take a video or grab something from my bags. I’m now a complete convert and I don’t think I’ll go on another long-term bike tour without one.

Ok, it’s time to fill our brains with kickstand knowledge.

Why Should You Use A Kickstand?

Firstly, they help you to load your bike. There’s no leaning it against yourself or another object while you mount your panniers or bikepacking bags. It’s pretty much like you have a personal assistant holding your bike for you.

They’re also super quick to deploy. I often stop abruptly, flick my stand down and take an opportune photo. Or sometimes I grab my rain gear from the top of my pannier just as the drops start to pelt.

Look, you might have the same view of kickstands as I had six months ago: they’re simply unnecessary. Or maybe you had a bad experience with a kickstand previously. Perhaps it deployed itself while riding, snapped in half, damaged your frame or banged into your pedals…

Those things suck, but I can assure you the best kickstands listed here are out of the way, silent, durable, quick to use and will add just 250 grams (0.5lbs) to your touring bike.

Stabilizing The Front Of The Bike

Before I get into the kickstands themselves, it’s important to understand how to stabilize a touring bike, especially if you have a front load and a centre-mount kickstand.

On almost every surface your front wheel will want to tilt as the bike leans, and this results in the handlebars turning as much as 180-degrees, or worse, your bike falling over.

Here are some options to ensure you get the best bike stability with your kickstand.

Brake Bands

Firstly, it’s not a bad idea to stabilize your bike with something that pulls the brake lever(s).

Click-Stand makes some neat brake bands , but you can also use hair ties or sections of an inner tube. A reader has also pointed out that bikes fitted with ‘European-style’ frame locks will also prevent your bike from rolling.

Steering Locks

SteerStopper makes a really neat component that’s designed to stop your handlebars from turning.

By all accounts, the people who use them, love them. A side benefit of this device is that you can push your bike up a hill without touching the handlebars.

Steering Stabilizers

A steering stabilizer connects a spring from your downtube to your fork crown.

They offer a self-centring action to the front wheel which prevents it from turning more than 45 degrees. This also makes it easier to load a front porteur rack or basket. Velo Orange ($15 on Amazon) and Hebie are the most common aftermarket brands for steering stabilizers.

Front Rack Kickstand

If you decide not to use any of the locks or stabilizers mentioned above, the Tubus Lowrider Kickstand provides additional stability to the front of your bike. They fit the Tubus Tara, Duo, Ergo and Nova lowrider rack models.

Integrated Steering Limiter

Some touring framesets like my KOGA WorldTraveller-S have components inside the headtube that prevent the handlebar from turning more than 45 degrees in either direction (see my KOGA bike video at 2:55 for an example).

I think these are the neatest solution for helping to somewhat stabilize your bike, but they’re limited to only a handful of touring bike manufacturers.

Kickstand Weight Limits

If you’ve broken a decent quality kickstand, it’s likely that you’ve exceeded its weight limit.

Most kickstands have a maximum capacity of 18-25kg, which is pretty easy to exceed with double leg kickstands in particular, given the rear load is suspended from the ground. Determining the weight capacity for a single leg kickstand is a little more difficult, so I’ll recommend the following…

Total bike+gear+food+water weight: Under 40kg – 18kg capacity kickstand 40kg or higher – 25kg capacity kickstand

If you’re planning on going on a bike trip where you need to carry 10+ days of food and a decent amount of water, you might be best served with the 35 to 80kg capacity models.

Rear Mount Kickstands

As most touring bikes have a decent amount of weight over the rear wheel, this kickstand type is undoubtedly the most stable given its ultra-wide stance.

You may need to cut down or adjust the length of your kickstand so that your bike can lean on an angle of approximately 15 degrees from vertical. A steering stabilizer of any kind is less necessary with this kickstand design.

If you’re a front-loader with a minimal rear-load (eg. front panniers with a rear bikepacking seatpack), skip past these rear stands to the double leg kickstands below.

Integrated KSA-18 Kickstand Mounts

This has got to be the neatest rear kickstand option for a touring bike. The rear dropout or chainstay is designed with two mounting holes which sit 18mm apart.

The best frames will use a nut and M6 bolt design so that if you accidentally snap a bolt, you can easily remove it from your frame. Unfortunately, many KSA-18 frames have an M5 thread built into the mount, so you’ll need to constantly check bolt tension to ensure the bolts don’t bend and eventually break inside your frame.

Recommended: Hebie FIX 18 (30kg), Pletscher Comp 18 (25kg), Comp 18 Zoom (18kg) or Comp 18 Flex (50kg)

Integrated KSA-40 Kickstand Mounts

This is an older, and therefore, less common standard with the mounting holes spaced 40mm apart. There are still ample kickstand options available.

Recommended: Hebie FIX 40 (30kg), Pletscher ESGE Comp Zoom 40 (18kg, $27 on Amazon ), Comp 40 (25kg) or Comp 40 Flex (50kg)

Adjustable Rear Kickstands

If you don’t have the KSA mounting points on your frame, here is your alternative.

Adjustable rear kickstands will fit most rim brake touring frames (careful if you have a spoke holder) but will only sometimes clear a disc brake caliper that’s fitted inside the rear triangle (seatstay mounted disc calipers are fine).

The Pletscher ESGE Multi kickstand tends to fit bikes with chainstay disc calipers a little better; I’ve annotated a photo with the potential bolt locations  HERE . But ultimately it will depend on the brake mount, brake model, chainstay diameter and dropout shape.

Recommended: Pletscher ESGE Multi-Zoom (18kg), ESGE Multi-Flex (50kg), Hebie FOX (25kg).

Centre Mount Kickstands

Centre mount kickstands are probably the most common kickstand type, in fact, many touring frames come with an integrated kickstand plate so that you can fit one up nicely. I highly recommend using something to stabilize your handlebars with any of the below kickstands. If your frame lacks a mounting plate, you’ll need to be EXTREMELY careful when tightening a centre kickstand to your chainstays – many frames have been destroyed from overtightened kickstand bolts.

Single Leg Kickstands

Single leg kickstands aren’t quite as stable as rear kickstands but are a great option for bikes with a kickstand plate. They’ll work very well when deployed on uneven surfaces, but keep in mind that you should have a load over the rear wheel for maximum stability.

Try to achieve a 15-degree bike lean by adjusting your kickstand length to suit your bike. The main downside to single-leg kickstands is that you can’t spin your cranks backwards (for lubricating a chain etc).

Recommended: Pletscher ESGE Zoom Adjustable (18kg capacity,  $23 on Amazon ), Ursus King 79 (35kg capacity) or Pletscher Optima Flex (50kg capacity).

Double Leg Kickstands

best kickstands

These stands are the best option for front-loaded bikes, and sometimes tandems.

For the best stability, the rear wheel should lift off the ground rather than the front; you can achieve this with a heavy front load relative to your rear. You may need to cut the legs down a little so that your rear wheel isn’t more than a few centimetres from the ground.

Try not to exceed the weight limit on double leg kickstands because they do tend to be a little more prone to breaking than the other stand options.

Double leg stands have a narrow stance, so the location where you deploy the stand should ideally be flat, and your panniers should be as evenly balanced as possible. A side benefit to double leg kickstands is that they make a great repair stand for tuning your gears.

Recommended: Pletscher ESGE Twin (25kg Capacity,  $42 on Amazon ) or Ursus Jumbo 80 (80kg Capacity)

Other Bike Stands

Click-stand.

These tentpole-type stands get rave reviews. They’re stable and lightweight. And you don’t need any of the typical kickstand mounting points.

I’ve spent a fair bit of time playing around with them and they do work. But I find the assembly and disassembly to be a little inconvenient when compared to a spring-loaded kickstand, and as a result, I use them much less frequently.

Kickstand Parts

Surly Long Haul Trucker Mount Plates After years of condemning kickstands fitted to Surly LHT and Disc Trucker frames, Surly started manufacturing  kickstand plates to fit centre kickstands.

Surly Kickstand Adapters for Troll, Ogre, ECR This is a really cool set of two 3D printed stainless steel parts ( part 1 + part 2 ) that will mount a KSA-18 kickstand onto Surly Troll, Ogre and ECR dropouts. To complete the kit you will also need to pick up 2x M6 stainless steel 30mm bolts/nuts from your local hardware store. Note: these parts will not fit with a Rohloff hub using the external gear mech.

Do I Need A Kickstand For My Bike?

Kickstands are one of those bike accessories that you don’t realize you need until you use one.

After that, it is hard to go back to living without it.

For cycle tourers, kickstands are as essential as panniers and a cool beard.

Sure, you could prop your bike against a wall, a table, or an innocent bystander but these might be in short supply in the middle of nowhere.

A kickstand makes it much more convenient to pack and unpack on the go.

The main problem here will be finding a kickstand that can handle the weight of a fully laden touring bike.

If you own a hybrid or a cruiser then you are likely to be hopping from place to place and always looking for somewhere to rest your bike whilst you grab a coffee.

A kickstand solves this problem.

Kids’ bikes usually come with kickstands as they are a great way to teach kids to take care of their bikes and should stop them from throwing them down and buckling the delicate rear derailer.

Given that road cyclists resent putting even a saddle bag on their frame , which is at least vastly practical, it should come as no surprise that they turn their nose up at kickstands.

They add weight and are not made for carbon frames .

Even stopping is an insult to some road cyclists, making a kickstand a preposterous accessory.

Pedal up to your local club ride with a kickstand and be prepared for comments.

But there is a sub-culture of road cyclists who might find a kickstand useful.

That is the Instagram cyclists, known more for their epic photos than their epic rides.

Kickstand makers have spotted a gap in the market and you can now get discrete, detachable kickstands to help create the perfect social post.

Types Of Kickstand (Rear Mount Vs. Center Mount)

Rear mount (side stand).

For touring bikes, where most of the weight is over the rear wheel, rear mount kickstands offer more stability due to their wide-angle stance.

Most touring bikes come with integrated KSA-18 mounts where rear kickstands can be added.

Some form of handlebar stabilizer is required when using rear kickstands to keep the front end stable.

Centre Mount (Double Leg Kickstand)

Centre mount kickstands are perhaps the most common and a lot of touring bikes come with an integrated kickstand plate that makes fitting easy and helps to protect the frame.

Centre mount kickstands come in a single leg and double leg option.

Centre mount kickstands tend to be a bit stronger than rear mount kickstands and help to spread the weight of the bike evenly, especially on bumpy surfaces.

The main drawback is that they interfere with the pedals when deployed which can be a pain for doing repairs on the go.

Portable kickstands are a new breed of kickstand.

Instead of being permanently attached to the frame, they can be dismantled and stored easily when not in use.

They are a lightweight solution and offer a lot of flexibility.

Video: Is A Portable Kickstand Right For You?

Kickstand Features To Look Out For

Bike frame compatibility.

The type of kickstand that you can use might ultimately be limited by your bike frame.

Most touring bikes come with integrated kickstand plates near the pedals for attaching center mount kickstands.

They might also have KSA-18 braze-ons for directly fastening rear mount kickstands.

Load Capacity

How much weight the kickstand can prop up is an important consideration, especially if you are touring with a fully-loaded bike.

Since most of the weight on touring bikes is over the rear wheel, it makes sense to look for a sturdy, reliable rear mount kickstand.

For normal, everyday cycling around town most kickstands are fine for holding up the bike itself but you should always check the manufactures specs.

Most tourers will tell you that, if your total load on the bike is less than 40kg then an 18kg kickstand weight limit will be good.

Anything above 40kg and you should opt for a beefier 25kg kickstand .

Even if you are riding a fully loaded touring bike, you should still keep one eye on the weight of all the components on your bike.

Every gram you add will have to be paid for on long climbs.

You can get great quality, lightweight kickstands that can still support a surprising amount of weight.

Even if you are just pootling from coffee shop to coffee shop, your legs will thank you for choosing a lightweight kickstand.

Adjustability

Not every bike is the same size so it makes sense for a kickstand to have some inbuilt adjustability.

With adjustable kickstands, the length can be altered easily , without any tools, to get the bike sitting at an optimum 15-degrees when resting on the kickstand.

Adjustable kickstands also tend to be a better option if your bike doesn’t have KSA mounting points on your frame.

Portability

Since not everyone wants to ride around with a kickstand attached to their frame permanently, especially if you do most of your riding on skinny tires, but there are times when a kickstand would be useful.

Enter the new breed of portable kickstands.

Portable kickstands usually have a telescopic leg or can be dismantled into a package, small enough to fit into your jersey pocket.

They are quick to install when you need to capture that awesome Instagram shot of your bike or for propping your bike up at the Sunday club run coffee stop.

How To Install A Kickstand On A Bike

Installing a kickstand on your bike is thankfully one of those jobs that don’t require the expertise of the local bike shop.

If you know your way around a wrench then you shouldn’t have any issue installing a kickstand.

  • Pick the right kickstand for your riding style and your bike, either a center mount or rear mount kickstand. Portable kickstands don’t require any installation by their very nature.
  • For rear mount kickstands, play with the position to make sure that the kickstand doesn’t interfere with pedaling and that there is plenty of clearance.
  • Once you are happy with the position, connect the kickstand bracket. The flanges on the bracket stop it from hitting the shifter cable that runs around the bottom of the bottom bracket .
  • Align your kickstand and tighten the bolt. This is usually one with a 14mm wrench.
  • Check the positioning once fully tight. The bike should rest at an angle of around 15-degrees when resting on the kickstand.

Kickstands: Frequently Asked Questions

Are Bike Kickstands Universal?

For the most part, kickstands can be fitted to any bike but it is important to confirm the length of the leg is ideal for your bike and set-up.

Are Kickstands Dangerous?

Mountain bikers instinctively shy away from kickstands – all it takes is an unfortunate bump on the trail and the kickstand could pop down.

It is not easy to ride with a kickstand in this position.

Can You Put Kickstands On Every Type Of Bike?

It is possible to find a kickstand for every type of bike but that doesn’t mean you should go ahead and attach one.

For road cyclists, a kickstand is simply an unnecessary weight and drag penalty.

If you have an e-bike, check that the kickstand can support the additional weight.

Wrapping Up

Unless you function only to be crowned king of the Strava leader board, it is safe to say that every other cyclist would benefit from the addition of a simple kickstand to their bike.

Once you use one for the first time to prop your bike, you will wonder what you did without it for so long.

It is yet another way that bike tourers lead the way.

If you need to hold up a heavy touring bike, the lightweight, rear-mounted Pletscher Zoom ESGE Kickstand shouldn’t let you down.

If you prefer a center-mount kickstand, the Ursus Jumbo has been built with the demands of touring cyclists in mind.

The All Mountain Style (AMS) Kickstand is a rare breed – a useful gadget.

Stick it in your jersey pocket when not in use and pop on the bike when there is no convenient wall around.

Whisper it, but could this be the kickstand that even road cyclists could love?

Double Central Stand - Btwin - Decathlon

Bitmugger said: I far over-exceed it's weight limit but the double stand from Decathlon has been great for me. Handles the loads I put on it and is wide enough to keep the bike stable, feels very solid. I think the URSUS one is super wide which will be nice but I can say that even a regular width one from decathlon has plenty of strength and width for my needs and fits a Moscow perfect. J.R. said: That stand has an impressive wide stance in the down position. When I needed a wide double leg stand in 2014 the only one available was the Pletscher . I do like it a lot, it is wide. Most aren't as wide, but the Ursus looks even wider in the down position. The only concern is will the Ursus accommodate the tires on your bike when the stand is folded up. Most of the pictures I see in reviews show fairly narrow hybrid bike tires (2"??) and the Moscow has 2.25" mtb tires. If the Ursus fits it looks like a great choice. Best of luck! I'll be following this for a review. Click to expand...

Bitmugger said: That's funny I landed on the same model of double stand as you since it was you who gave me the idea to get one myself! Once I saw you had one I remembered how nice it was on bikes I rode in Denmark and the Netherlands and realized how awful side kickstands are when my old bike was loaded down with gear. I'll never go back. If someone could figure out how to mount a frame lock on a Moscow now I'll be delighted. I have a very small cable lock ( https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B085Y4FV3F ) but would prefer a frame lock but couldn't get it to mount. I want a frame lock for running into country corner stores, I just lock the bike, set the alarm (I think I have the same alarm as you John as you inspired me there too) and run in for my water or whatever. I have a regular lock for longer stops. Thank you for both ideas, the stand and the alarm. Click to expand...

I use that as well. Using the red has consequences

  • Aug 20, 2021

My apologies for the long delay. After waiting for replies from manufacturers and dealers of the ursus stand, and not getting any, i went ahead and got the stand anyway. John Peck pointed out that i may have an issue with the 2.25" inch tyres and referenced the 5 star review from another bike. And i thank him for his advice/warning. i didn't have a problem as the Moscow has a proper centre mount as part of the frame. The bike in the review had to use the mounting plate. The mounting plate places the stand several inches further back towards the tyre. This is what makes the difference. I will do a proper review with pictures once i am done with the stand but here are the key points. The ursus stand fit the NCM Moscow pretty much out of the box. One side was was almost touching the whiskers on the tyre. Being a little ocd'ish i found on examination that the stand has a spring plate on one side in the stand. The opposite side to the leg that was close to the tyre. To ensure clearance I took a 1x5x25mm piece of rubber and double sided tape and slid it into the recess where the leg folds up. This gave me plenty of clearance. Even though the stand is advertised as 24-28" compatible, it sits around 10mm off the ground when the legs are down. The only issue this creates is the bike tends to "walk" if you have the stand out on a hill. My solution to this is to make a 10mm extension plate to fit into the frame bracket and capture the stand. I am currently looking for someone locally that still does metal milling. i apologise for mixing the measurements but i am old and mentally work better with inches, but take measurements in centimetres. Final word is that this stand is worth the extra effort to get a perfect fit. It is stable and sturdy in construction. Oh, and it doesn't hit the ground on cornering, but you can still manage pedal lock if you aren't careful. Thank you to those that offered input. I will publish a formal review with pictures when i complete the work.

After a few slower days, we’re starting to see an influx of Green Deals ahead of next week’s Prime Day event, with today’s headliner being a 9to5Toys -exclusive $600 off deal on the ENGWE Engine Pro e-bike for $799 . It is joined by EcoFlow’s latest 24-hour flash sale that is offering the DELTA 2 Max power station for $1,299 , as well as the DELTA Pro Ultra power station starting from $4,700 – with both eligible to receive a free trolley along with your purchase. There’s also a rare deal on the Anker EverFrost 40 Portable Electric Cooler at a new $589 low. Head below for other New Green Deals we’ve found today and, of course,  Electrek ’s best EV buying  and  leasing deals . Also, check out the new  Electrek Tesla Shop for the best deals on Tesla accessories .

Get an exclusive $600 off discount on ENGWE’s Engine Pro e-bike at return $799 low

Wellbots is offering a  9to5Toys -exclusive chance to save through July 18 on the  ENGWE Engine Pro e-bike at  $799 shipped ,  after using the promo code  9TO5BIKE600  at checkout for $600 off the price  – plus, free shipping! Normally fetching $1,399, it’s only seen three discounts since the new year began, first to $1,049 in March, followed by a flash sale in the first week of June to $999, which dropped lower to $799 weeks later at the end of the month. Today’s deal comes in as a solid $600 markdown for the second time in 2024 and returning costs to the all-time lowest we have tracked. You can learn more about this e-bike by heading below or reading through our  hands-on review .

The  ENGWE Engine Pro e-bike  arrives stocked with a 1000W peak-rated brushless motor alongside a removable 48V 15.6Ah battery that will carry you up to 28 MPH for up to 75 miles while utilizing its five levels of pedal assistance, or you can use the throttle for pure electric action with a reduced travel range. This model was built for rugged all-terrain use, with a robust and sturdy full-suspension frame, as well as 20-inch by 4-inch fat tires that provide far better traction and handling, no matter the terrain.

The Engine Pro e-bike also comes with a wide array of other premium features that enhance your ride and expand its versatility, like the Shimano 8-speed gearbox, hydraulic disc brakes, integrated LED headlight and taillight, a rear cargo rack, fenders for both wheels, a kickstand, a large LCD color display, and a folding body for easier storage and transport when you’re not square on the saddle.

EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra portable power station within post for ENGWE Engine Pro e-bike

EcoFlow 24-hour flash sale offers free trolley and up to 36% off power stations

As part of its  ongoing Prime Day sale , EcoFlow has launched its next  24-hour flash sale that is taking  up to 36% off  two offered power station deals while supplies last – one direct from the site, the other through EcoFlow’s Amazon storefront. The first of these deals is the  DELTA Pro Ultra Portable Power Station for  $4,999 shipped , with a free trolley being thrown in direct from the site. Normally going for $6,397, this particular unit has seen few discounts – and even fewer direct from EcoFlow, with most coming through Amazon instead. It first dropped to $5,799 for two short periods in the first three months of 2024, followed by a drop to $5,199 in April and May, eventually shaving off another $100 and repeating in June. Today’s deal comes in as a $1,099 markdown that lands it at the second-lowest price we’ve seen – beaten out by the sudden deal the brand is offering through  Amazon to the new all-time low of  $4,799 shipped , though you won’t be getting the free trolley to transport the power station like you do with the direct flash sale.

The DELTA Pro Ultra boasts a 6,144Wh capacity which can be further expanded up to a massive 90kWh (with separately sold  smart extra batteries  and a  smart home panel  for 0-ms switchover) for complete and total home coverage during power outages. It provides 7,200W of output power and sports 11 output ports to cover devices and appliances, with six AC ports, two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports, and a DC port. It can fully recharge its battery in 2.5 hours via a 3,000W wall outlet, in 2 hours when connected to a max 4,000W solar input, or in 1.5 hours via a gas generator or an EV charging pile/station (with the appropriate adapters). You’ll have a wide range of advanced smart controls through the EcoFlow app, with the station itself analyzing its power usage trends to offset peak rates when utilizing solar and generally customizing settings to fit your habits.

The second deal that is included in this flash sale is the Amazon-only offer of a  DELTA 2 Max Portable Power Station for  $1,299 shipped , also with a  free trolley thrown in  (to benefit from this deal, you must add both items to your cart and the discount will be automatically applied at checkout). This power station arrives sporting a 2,048Wh capacity that can expand up to 6,144Wh with the addition of  smart extra batteries , and dishes out 2,400W of power output that can be bumped up to 3,400W when activating its X-Boost mode. It can recharge up to 80% of its battery in a little over one hour via a wall outlet or you can combine 1,000W of solar input alongside the outlet to achieve 80% battery in 43 minutes. You’ll get the same smart controls through the app here, and 15 output ports: six ACs, four USB-As, two USB-Cs, two DCs, and one car port.

Be sure to also check out the full lineup of offerings during this ongoing sale that runs through July 15, which you can  browse through here . The last of these 24-hour flash sales is scheduled on the last day of the overall sale – July 15 – so be sure to mark it in your calendars or keep an eye open for our next post!

Anker EverFrost Portable Electric coolers within post for ENGWE Engine Pro e-bike

Anker EverFrost 40 Portable Electric Cooler hits new $589 low

Wellbots is offering the  Anker EverFrost 40 Portable Electric Cooler for  $589 shipped ,  after using the promo code  NEW10  at checkout for $10 off.  Normally going for $849, this particular model has seen far fewer discounts since its release in March 2023, as opposed to its 30 and 50 models that have been far more prolific with discounts – especially in 2024. In the new year so far, we’ve seen the price cut down to the former $649 low a few times on new models, with occasional refurbished deals popping up for $680. Today’s deal comes in as a $260 markdown that beats our previous mention by $60 and lands it at a new all-time low (if you don’t count the $519 early-bird special launch discount). You’ll also find its initial discounted rate  matched at Amazon , without the additional $10 coupon though.

Whether you’re preparing for your next backyard cookout, tailgate, or picnic,  this 43L battery-powered cooler  arrives ready to keep your food and drinks cold and crisp for up to 35 hours – plus, no ice is needed with this model! It sports a 299Wh capacity battery to keep everything running, with a solar input port (100W max) for solar charging support as well. You’ll get total smart controls through the Anker app on your phone, and can even double the battery as a device charger thanks to its two USB-A ports and one USB-C port.

You’ll find the other two models discounted as well, with the smaller  33L model currently going for  $499  at Amazon, down from $799 – the lowest price we’ve seen to date. Sporting most of the same performance specs as the above model, the main difference here aside from its size decrease, is the extended 42-hour runtime. You can get a personal take of what to expect from this model (and by relation the 43L model) in our  hands-on review . Where things start to get more advanced is with the  EverFrost 50 Dual-Zone cooler  that is missing from Amazon, but can be found over at Best Buy for  $799 , down from $949. Here, you’re getting a dual-zone unit that can both cool and freeze simultaneously for up to 27 hours on a single charge.

kickstand for trek bike

Loved the world over, the Marlin has long held the hearts of new riders and seasoned rippers alike, and to keep everyone rolling with ear-to-ear grins we’ve revamped it with more trail confidence than ever. Whether zipping through town, dipping your toes into the trail for the first time or slicing through switchbacks as a well-seasoned rider, you’ll appreciate the sleek new frame that ups the capability and brings looks to match. There’s a reason why it’s always been your favourite.

Total trail confidence A bike's geometry is the defining framework it's built on, and the Marlin is a true mountain bike at it's core. Its measurements are perfectly dialled to give you a confidence-inspiring, planted feel when you’re rolling down steep and bumpy trails, while keeping it easy to pedal back to the top when you’re ready for another lap.

Marlin’s head tube (a) sits at a slacker (more acute) angle. The slacker head tube angle (b) moves your front wheel further in front of you. Take it to the trail, and this slacker head tube angle (b) boosts stability and control for confidence when descents get steep and rowdy.

To balance a slacker head tube angle (b) , the Marlin features a steeper (more upright) seat tube angle (d) . A steeper seat tube (c) lets you get the most out of every pedal stroke, so you don’t waste power on the climb to the top.

The Marlin is equipped with a short stem and wider handlebar for more direct control and responsiveness when you’re manoeuvring through rocks and roots. Meanwhile, a longer reach (e) gives you extra stability so you can ride faster and more confidently.

Secure your ride

A new Thru-Skew axle provides better rear wheel security, holding your wheel in place snugly and ensuring it doesn't slip out of the frame, even when you're rolling through rough-and-tumble terrain.

Fully guarded

Full-length, full-coverage guards on the chainstay protect your frame and keep your ride quiet.

Float on the trail

Big 2.4˝ tyres elevate traction, so you stay planted on dusty switchbacks. But not only do bigger tyres give you more grip — they also soak up bumps for a smoother ride.

Upgrade ready

With a frame this nice, you won’t want to part ways with your Marlin as your skills grow. The Marlin Gen 3 is upgrade-ready, so you can upgrade your bike when you upgrade your skills. New internal cable routing lets you install a dropper post – and sizes XS and up can be upgraded to a bigger 120 mm fork when you’re ready to take on bigger trails.

A bike for everyone We believe that every rider deserves a well-fitted bike, that’s why the Marlin is available in every size from XXS to XXL – and even an 'extra-medium' size for riders who fall in between a medium and large. Each size is tuned to its riders, with Smart Wheel Sizing that scales the wheel size with the bike size, so every rider has comfortable standover height. Smaller, XXS and XS frames also feature a curved top tube to boost confidence and make getting on and off a breeze.

  • Shop XS bikes

Make Marlin yours Whether you’re regularly ripping up the trail or a rugged city commuter, your Marlin can be fully customised with a treasure-trove of accessories. From kickstands and grips to bottle cages and bags, you can turn your Marlin into the perfect bike for your everyday ride.

  • Deck out your Marlin

Trek warranty and backing We believe that when you put your heart and soul into something, you should have the stomach to back it up. That’s why we stand behind all Trek bikes with a limited-lifetime warranty. From your first ride to your 500th, we’ll be here for you in the unlikely event that something goes wrong with your Marlin. All you have to do is pop into your local Trek retailer and you’ll find all the support you need to get back spinning in no time.

The Marlin family Both generations of Marlins are true mountain bikes aimed at the rider who wants a versatile hardtail capable of off-road singletrack or in-city missions. Both generations have a 100 mm travel suspension fork and 29” wheels on most sizes except for smaller sizes with proportionate suspension travel and wheels, thus making it a great bike for shorter riders as well.

Marlin Gen 2

Get all-around versatility on Marlin Gen 2. It fits up to 2.2˝ tyres, and features balanced, neutral geometry that keeps you comfortable and in control as you venture off-road.

Marlin Gen 3

Get serious trail capability with Marlin Gen 3’s bigger, 2.4˝ tyre clearance, internal dropper post routing and a stiffer, more secure ThruSkew rear axle. Plus, its updated longer, slacker geometry gives you a boost in stability on steeper trails and at higher speeds.

Looking for something more to fill your singletrack appetite?

If you’re itching for a lighter weight, even faster hardtail, the X-Caliber is your ride. It’s light, sleek and efficient – perfect for new riders, cross-country racers and anyone who wants to cover a lot more trail miles in a lot less time.

The Roscoe delivers the capability of a full suspension trail bike in a simple hardtail package. The laid-back geometry that gives you tons of stability on rowdier trails, and it rolls on big 2.6˝ tyres that give tons of traction for getting through rough and tricky sections of trail.
