Meet the Beast Fleet

Our Fleet of Beasts are veteran ‘Cape York friendly’ Nissan GU Patrols.  Nicknamed, ‘Cape Crocs’, they are workshopped from ‘snout to tail tip’ for vigorous 4WD fun.

Each Cape Croc is specifically modified to perform on Cape York’s tracks as a very capable 4WD weapon and comfortable tourer. The Cape York roads are infamous for destroying vehicles. Many tourists have ventured on to the cape tracks in their brand new 4wd vehicle, only to end up homeward bound on the back of a tow truck. Our fleet has survived all the cape could throw at it. They are tried and tested and fun to drive.

Croczilla , the Guides vehicle, leads the fleet. Snapping at Croczilla’s heels are Kermit, our sentimental favourite and the only frog in the fleet, followed by Crazy Croc, Cool Croc, Cooeee Croc and Rock Croc, with more to come in 2022. All Crocs have the same basic modifications as Kermit, with slight variations in appointments throughout the fleet.

We have created a document to help you prepare your pre (traveling Cape to Cairns) / post (traveling Cairns to Cape) trip itinerary in the Cape York Peninsular and Torres Straits areas. We have included how to get to and from the Cape either before your trip (if travelling from the Cape to Cains) or after your trip (if travelling from Cairns to the Cape) and tours we recommend and places to stay at the top.

You need to be over the age of 21, have held a license for a minimum of 2 years, be a competent and confident driver and we will help with the rest. There is a 4×4 guide on each trip to guide you through the tough spots and assist you to improve your 4wd skills.

Yes! You will get to experience first hand the Old Telegraph Track, Australia’s most iconic 4×4 Track! Followed by the Frenchman’s Track as well as the Bloomfield and 5 Beaches Tracks.

There are two support vehicles. The Guides vehicle , known as “Croczilla” is just what its name suggests, a ‘beefed up beast’ of a 4WD vehicle, driven by your tour Guide. It is a 4WD garage on wheels, carrying spare parts, tyres, tools, extensive recovery gear, oils and lubricants, fridge and freezer and fitted with a winch, it’s very handy to have around if a difficult recovery is required. On the roads, you are guided and connected to your 4wd Guide by UHF radio and in challenging obstacles your guide will be out on the track directing you by sight in person. The Camp Truck known as “Old Salty” is a large truck fitted out with food fridge and freezer, stoves, bbq, generator, work benches and even has a kitchen sink. Additionally, it has storage room for all the camp equipment. Staffed by the cook and camp assistant, most days this vehicle will travel independently to the Croc Fleet and arrive in camp early to set up before you arrive.

Our programs are mostly fully inclusive, except for some personal items and optional tours available from 3 rd party operators such as Fishing or Torres Strait Island tours. We aim to take away all the worry of planning and give you more time to kick back and enjoy your holiday. Please refer to our Inclusions and Exclusions lists detailed with each Tours pricing.

Not much! Just mainly, accommodation before the 9 Day trip starting in Cairns and after any tour that finishes in Cairns. If you are on one of our, Fly/Drive 9 day trips, we haven’t included the flight to or from The Tip and Cairns, as you may choose to extend your trip which will mean you have the option of flying in or out of Horn Island. Talk to us about the options available.  Other items not included are spending money, personal snacks and drinks and personal bottled drinking water.

Our vehicles are covered for Third Party Property, Fire and Theft Insurance. Please refer to pages 44-55 of the following: https://www.nrma.com.au/sites/nrma/files/nrma/policy_booklets/car_pds_0721_nsw_act_tas_qld.pdf

We strongly recommend taking out Comprehensive Insurance to cover the following suggested but not limited to: personal belongings, cancellation, emergency evacuation, personal liability, death and disability. Please refer to our Booking Terms and conditions for more information.

Please contact us for further information.

In the event of mechanical breakdown not caused by negligent driving, Australian 4WD Adventurers will provide alternative transport for you to continue. This may involve the loss of a day, to transport a replacement vehicle to the designated site.  Our 4WD Guides are also mechanical wizards and carry most parts required to maintain the fleet throughout the adventure.

Our Guides vehicle carries a Satellite phone in the event of an emergency. Our Guides are First Aid Trained. Comprehensive Insurance inclusive of Medical Cover and Emergency Evacuation cover is strongly recommended.

As we provide tents, stretcher and mattress for everyone, storage/carriage room can be a considerable problem. Call to discuss if necessary. For hygiene reasons you must provide your own sleeping bag (open out doona style recommended) and pillow.  If you have time before departure, these items can be readily and cheaply purchased in Cairns.

Your deposit is non-refundable, but if you need to cancel prior to final payment, you can transfer your deposit to another Australian 4WD Adventure. Final payment is due 60 days prior to departure, any cancelation after this time incurs a 100% cancelation fee. Nil refund will also apply once tour has commenced. Please refer to our Booking Terms and Conditions for more information.

Our fully inclusive trips are all designed around our unique 4WD’s. We know we can look after these vehicles in remote areas with our support crew and gear.

Our Cape Crocs have spacious interiors and are very comfortable with 3 adults, anymore and you may find yourselves a little too close.  Two adults with 2 children is still comfortable. We want you to have an awesome trip with space to spread out a little.

If we camp in the National Parks, there are toilets and sometimes a shower. At commercial campgrounds, including Roadhouses, you will find excellent facilities including daily serviced toilets and showers. Our bush camp at Chuulangun has toilet and shower facilities. If an emergency bush camp is required, we cannot provide shower or toilet facilities.

The commercial campgrounds we utilise have coin operated washing machines.  Clothes can be washed overnight. Additionally, you will have time to do your washing at the Tip on your free days. On average, a single wash load costs $4, Dryer load $4. ($1 coins are required).

Your personal drinks, water, soft drinks, and alcohol is not provided. Each Cape Croc has a 65-litre fridge ample to keep a daily supply of drinking water cold. You will have the opportunity to buy bulk water and other drinks on Day 1 of each trip. There will be the opportunity to refill drinking water at most commercial campgrounds, alternatively you can buy bottled water from Roadhouses and shops along the way. All water for meal preparation tea coffee etc is provided.

We provide your main meals: Breakfast is a combination of continental and cooked. Lunch is a range of wraps and sandwiches. Dinner is a mix of camp oven dishes and BBQ’s. We pride ourselves on the quantity and quality of our meal menu, which has been designed and prepared by restaurant chefs.

Absolutely – just let us know, well in advance, your special requirements and we will do our best to accommodate.

A trip will only be confirmed and operate when a   minimum number of 8 people in 4 vehicles have booked.  There will only be a maximum of 6 ‘client’  vehicles on any trip. All trips are accompanied by the two support vehicles and crew.

A lot of land in Cape York is Aboriginal Land where special rules and restrictions apply, not only in the communities, but throughout the whole shire.

You can check the following website for the latest updates: https://www.qld.gov.au/atsi/health-staying-active/alcohol-smoking-drugs/community-alcohol-restrictions

We also like to support all businesses in the Cape Region and buy as much as possible locally.

If you are on our longer 16-day program there is some free time when you get to the Tip. Whilst we are travelling throughout the Cape we ask everyone to stay as a group for safety reasons.

Absolutely! If fishing is your thing, then it’s a MUST to throw in a line on a trip to the Cape. There is a chance to do half day, full day, or overnight fishing tours from Bamaga. Not promising, but there could be a couple of chances along the way to ‘wet a line’. Our Guides are all keen fishermen. Seisia Jetty and all the beach areas north of the Jardine are noted fishing hot spots.

There are several Optional Tours we can arrange for you. The most popular are the day trip to Thursday island, or, the one day, Three Islands tour. Depending on availability, it might be possible to arrange a Fishing trip. Other longer tours are available if you have the time.

Should COVID-19 government border restrictions impact travel, you will receive a 100% credit for your tour booking.

Outside of these conditions, our normal  booking terms and conditions  apply.

Top Reviews 2022

“A wonderful experience and tour. Everything is well thought out and it all runs so smoothly. Joe and Kody our guides were professional, knowledgeable and very friendly. They made the trip so enjoyable. We are asked to choose a highlight, but everyday had a new one. If you like the great outdoors then don’t hesitate to book your tour with Cockatours. The tour is excellent value and you won’t be disappointed.” Charlene, 2022

“Rossy takes so much care to ensure you are going to have a great trip! I went to Cape York on the MAN truck with Joe and Kody and you can just tell that Rossy chooses his guides and cooks with such thought and care to know you will have a great time! Yes it is real camping, yes there are mattresses and good linen, yes they really do have everything on the truck! Highly recommend pre-buying the souvenir shirt, they keep you warm in the water and cool in the sun!” Catherine, 2022

“A trip to The Tip with the amazing Joe and Kody was definitely a life changing and very memorable experience. They were fun, knowledgeable guys who made every day exciting and different to all the other days. Joe handled the 12-ton truck admirably, so that, coupled with his knowledge of the tricky road conditions and the comfort of the truck, made our travel something we could eagerly anticipate each time we boarded. Kody’s main role was to cook our meals, which he did superbly. Each meal was delicious, different every day, and served hot and plentifully. But he also took great care of us in many other ways, and had a fantastic sense of humour. Nothing was too much trouble for these chaps and they made every day a true delight.

The trip itself was superb. I’m sure we saw many sights, and heard much information that other travellers might not, especially if they did the trip on their own. I can’t recommend Cockatours highly enough and have put my name on the wait list for next year’s Gulf Savannah trip. There were too many exceptional experiences and places visited to pick a favourite, so I’d prefer to leave that for future travellers to discover for themselves.” Brodwyn, 2022

Day 1 Cairns - Cooktown

Tour Melbourne Image

Moments after departing Cairns you're amid the World Heritage listed Wet Tropics of Queensland. Cross the Daintree River and you’re on your way to Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef. You’re not here to dive in – your journey takes you off-road along the 4WD Bloomfield Track. Legends (and myths) await at Black Mountain, sometimes dubbed the Bermuda Triangle of Australia.

Day 2 Cooktown - Musgrave

Today you're in Quinkan Country, home to one of Australia best-preserved rock-art sites. Nearby, Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park is big in more ways than one, from its enormous waterlily-covered billabongs to its unfathomable number of birds.

Day 3 Musgrave - Weipa

The historic gold town of Coen may be small in size, but it’s got plenty of country swagger. Bauxite mining was the reason the tiny town of Weipa was formed. Today, visitors arrive for blazing sunsets over the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Day 4 Weipa - Bramwell

How do you want to spend your pre-lunch hours? Perhaps on an optional Weipa Wildlife & Eco Cruise, revealing First Nations culture and wildlife. Or dig deep on a bauxite mine tour. How these rocks are pulled from the ground is head-scratching. As is the size of Bramwell Station, Australia’s northernmost cattle station and your base for the night.

Day 5 Bramwell - Seisia

Your early start today is worth it when you arrive at Fruit Bat Falls for lunch. Dive in, splash about, cool off, unwind. There’s not much between you and Cape York; cross the Jardine River and you’re there. Seisia is the departure point for ferries to Thursday Island and fishing charters. It’s also the gateway to tomorrow’s adventures.

Day 6 Cape York - Somerset

Not many people can say they’ve stood at the very top of mainland Australia at Somerset, the first European settlement on the Cape York Peninsula. Lunch is served on palm fringed Anchorage Beach overlooking the Albany Passage.

Day 7 Seisia - Thursday Island - Cairns

Rich in Aboriginal culture, history and natural beauty, Thursday Island is the capital of the Torres Strait Islands. Time might stand still here, but you won’t – you’re on a guided tour before heading to Horn Island to board your aircraft, flying over the Great Barrier Reef back to Cairns. Wait, how did this week pass so quickly?

Please note: This itinerary may be subject to change.

Where else but Cape York can you stand on the tip of Australia, discover one of the world’s oldest rainforests in the world and travel on roads few even dare to tread? Just because Australia’s last frontier is calling, doesn’t mean you need to travel it alone.

For the adventure of a lifetime, without any of the ‘going solo’ stress, join one of these guided Cape York tours.

The tip of Australia, Cape York, needs very little introduction for those who live and breathe rugged adventure. It’s big, it’s wild and it’s ripe for exploring – but it also needs serious preparation if you’re thinking of driving it solo. While it’s long been said a sense of adventure is the best packing essential for the northern neck of Australia, if you opt for an all-inclusive guided tour, aside from your clothes, there’s actually not that much more to take.

Save the hours of detailed planning, itinerary coordinating, and stress of driving and let a Cape York tour take care of the rest. All that’s left to do is sit back and watch the landscape ebb and flow between cattle stations, World Heritage-listed rainforest, wetlands, towering termite mounds and pristine beaches to name a few.

Fruit Bat Falls Cape York

Fruit Bat Falls, Apudthama National Park (Jardine River)

Explore the natural colour contrasts of Cape York with Cockatours , who lead a 15-day camping and 4WD expedition to the tip. With an itinerary designed to ensure your sightseeing is savoured rather than skulled, Cockatours will have you exploring the best of Cape York’s landscape, Indigenous history and seriously wild, wildlife (think: crocodiles and carnivorous plants).

With three Cape York tours to choose from, including one that’s entirely dedicated to those under 45 years of age, you’ll want to book in fast because they’ve sold out the last three years running. Led by an ecologist who specialises in Cape York, this is an all-inclusive trip where you’ll be immersed day and night (read: camping) amongst the iconic landscape.

Far North Escapes

Old Telegraph Track

If you’ve been spending too much time in peak hour traffic, it’s time to replace it with a road trip to remember, joining Far North Escapes for their nine or 12-day, small format, Cape York Tour. Either duration you choose, you’ll discover the tip of Australia in private 4WD vehicles, which seats a maximum of six guests.

With privacy on your side, you can expect to tick off your Cape York bucket list, the tip of Australia, Old Telegraph Track, Thursday Island and Daintree Rainforest – without compromising the serenity with even so much as the crowds from your own tour bus. The premise of this tour is built around flexibility – to ensure you are exploring the real Cape York – a destination famous for being off the beaten tourist track.

Australian 4WD Adventures

musgrave station cape york

Musgrave Station

If being passenger doesn’t feel the same as hopping behind the wheel, join Australian 4WD Adventures , for a tag along tour to the top. You don’t need to talk the 4WD torque to join, so long as you’re a confident and competent driver, your hosts will teach you the rest in their fleet of customised rigs – built to best the Cape.

You’ll be given the keys to a ‘beast’, a Nissan GU Patrol, which have been workshopped for what Cape York’s tracks throw at you – river crossings, vertical drops and corrugations that show you what suspension is all about. Put tyres to the not-so tarmac of some of Cape York’s toughest tracks, including Old Telegraph Track, Frenchman’s Track, the 5 Beaches Track and Bloomfield Track. Your experienced hosts will take care of most things, including all your camping equipment across their tour which runs in a nine-day fly/drive combination or 16-day all-drive itinerary.

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

Explore a pristine tropical wilderness en route to the tip of Australia

About cape york.

Bordered by the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Coral Sea, Cape York Peninsula is an untouched wilderness dominated by mighty meandering rivers and vast flood plains. It’s the place where you can stand on the very tip of the Australian continent, discover the oldest rainforest in the world, and travel deep into wild frontier country.

Connected to New Guinea for much of the past 250,000 years, the repeated interchange of flora and fauna has bequeathed a rich biological legacy on Cape York Peninsula. Nowhere is this more evident than the Wenlock River, home to more freshwater fish species than any other river in Australia. You’ll also learn about the Cape’s incredible biological diversity at Piccaninny Plains, an AWC Sanctuary.
