There are 10 Meru-style tented suites individually erected on raised wooden platforms, which extend onto private decks with a view of the untamed bush. The tall mopane trees provide mottled shade to every tent, while a canvas canopy roofs the deck and outdoor furniture. The tented suites exude a fusion of bushveld delights with Scandinavian style with their sophisticated log cabin feel.

Each room sleeps two people and has an en suite bathroom with a walk-in shower, toilet, and simple bathroom vanity complete with complimentary soap, shampoo and lotion. Bathrooms have a view of the wilderness beyond and offer tranquil space to freshen up. A wooden bathroom door provides a sense of privacy. Neutral tone linens, African-style designer cushions and a simple, woven floor mat provide a simple sense of sophistication to each of the tented suites.

Each of the tented suites contains two single beds (pushed together for double) complete with stylish and simple design elements. All linen has a high-thread count and protective mosquito nets drape over four-poster beds.

Beds face towards the balcony, offering stellar views of the wilderness beyond. Balconies come complete with a lounge and seating area, and typical African decor.

Is the Mankwe Tented Retreat for Me?

The charming Mankwe Tented Retreat is situated in a private concession on the doorstep of the famous Moremi Game Reserve. Tucked away in a grove of mopane trees this safari lodge offers its visitors an unbeatable location close to incredible safari experiences.

In total, there are 10 tented rooms. The tents are built on raised wooden platforms, each with their own private viewing deck. Each room has a fan for cooling off during the sizzling summer months.

The main area comprises a small swimming pool surrounded by wooden decking that flows through to various sheltered sections for relaxing and onto a dining area with the cosy boma adjacent. From here, a meandering wooden walkway winds its way to a second swimming pool complete with wooden decking, sun loungers and an intimate pool bar.

Each day, you can choose 2 activities such as morning, afternoon game drive, a full day drive in the Chobe corridor, nature walks and birding. There are also optional extras, such as a day trip to Moremi or Khwai or some boat activities (water level dependant).

A drop-down canvas flap can be closed between the bathroom and bedroom to offer privacy, while the windows and front entrance of the tent are shielded with bug-proof mesh screens and canvas flaps. Mankwe Tented Retreat is a solar-powered camp, greatly reducing its impact on the surrounding environment. The ten, tented suites are privately located among the mopane trees, and the main area of the lodge, containing lounge, bar, and dining area, is centrally located. A fireplace is built in the main boma area, creating a place of gathering for guests before and after dinner, while the adjacent lounge is a spacious, shaded place to relax with a book. Meal times are a convivial and scrumptious affair in the dining tent, after a traditional drum beat calls guests to the table. There are no fences around the lodge or tented units, making Mankwe a true ‘bush lodge’. Elephants roam freely, as do other animals, and guests are advised not to wander around camp at night. Please note that Mankwe is unfenced and wild animals do wander through camp at times. Children are to be supervised at all times. Animal feeding is not allowed.

BOOKING TERMS & CONDITIONS: * Rates are per person sharing per night, and inclusive of 12% Botswana VAT and dinner, bed, lunch and breakfast. * Accommodation is based on Twin beds, each with en-suite/private bathroom facilities as described. * Rates EXCLUDE BWP10 per person per night Government bed levy. This is a compulsory charge, and added to your invoice, and is prepaid. (Bed levy is applicable for both accommodation and campsites). * Rates include emergency medical evacuation insurance, but it is compulsory for guests to take out their own comprehensive travel insurance that covers evacuation and medical treatment in a private medical facility. * Rates exclude all drinks, gratuities, personal items, and curio shop purchases. There are cash bars at all camps. * Moremi Park fees are excluded for all transfers that utilize the Park. * All guests are required to sign an indemnity at check-in, or at the start of a tour or activity. * Rates are subject to increases should the VAT or Government taxes increase. Bordering the Moremi Game Reserve – the oldest protected region of the Okavango – a vast 85,000ha concession forms the territory of Mankwe – “mother leopard” in the Setswana language of the Batswana people. This is the home of Mankwe Tented Retreat, our base in this breathtakingly beautiful country.

With another 20,000ha of traversing along the stunning Khwai River, this is an intimate, authentic safari camp that has risen, like a phoenix, from the ashes of its former incarnation to become one of the Okavango’s best-kept secrets.

Opened at the start of 2020, just before the world as we know it went into lockdown and history’s course was changed forever, Mankwe Tented Retreat is a survivor in every respect, overcoming a devastating fire and COVID19 to stake its safari claim.

Perfect for exploring the Moremi Game Reserve and the easternmost edge of the legend that is the Okavango, this is a land of contrasts, from the mopane-rich woodland surrounding the camp and the lush, riverine banks of the Khwai River.

We firmly believe in the notion of less being more, using the gorgeous tapestry of Botswana’s magnificent untamed wilderness as a canvas on which to paint memorable safaris, beginning with our 10 beautiful and spacious tented suites. A fusion of modern style and practical design, each is raised on its own wooden platform with hardwood floors and views out over wild Africa from private viewing decks.

With an option of either a kingsize bed or twin bed configuration, all under flowing mosquito nets, every tent has its own en-suite bathroom with a shower, flushing toilet, double vanities and expansive views of the wilderness thanks to a floor-to-ceiling window.

There is a tea and coffee station, hanging space for clothing, a standing fan that provides cooling breezes during the summer months and ample lighting either side of the bed as well as at an elegant desk with a wilderness outlook.

Two additional en-suite tents provide guide/pilot accommodation for privately guided safaris.

It plays a critical role in the lifecycle of the emperor moth, whose eggs are laid on its leaves, becoming caterpillars known as mopane worms before their metamorphosis into one of the most impressive moths in the world.

This simple yet stylish lodge, made from natural light wood, blends seamlessly with its forest surroundings and provides a chic retreat in one of Botswana's most sought-after regions.

This lodge is located in a prime spot in the wilds of Botswana, so it's no surprise that elephants, buffalo, lion, leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs are frequent guests. If you're feeling adventurous, you can go on morning or afternoon game drives, or take a spotlight game drive at night. Mankwe is also a great jumping off point for exploring the Delta, where there are plenty of islands to discover. If the water's high enough, you can even go for a mokoro or boating adventure in the Moremi. And if you're more of a homebody, there are plenty of other activities to keep you entertained, like sundowner set-ups, birdwatching, and guided walks with the San people.

Raised on wooden platforms, each stunning Meru-style tented suite comes with its own private outdoor deck boasting views of the wilderness. The tranquil main area of the lodge houses a swimming pool, dining and lounge area, and small relaxation enclaves that effortlessly flow through the pool area. The charming Mankwe Tented Retreat is situated in a private concession on the doorstep of the game-rich Moremi Game Reserve. Tucked away in a grove of mopane trees and mysterious woodlands, this safari lodge sanctuary offers its visitors an unbeatable location close to both land and water-based safari activities. Mankwe Tented Retreat is a sanctuary for the soul, and oozes an atmosphere of tranquillity.

In total, there are 10 tented suites. Tents are built on raised wooden platforms, each with its own private viewing deck. Expansive bedrooms offer a configuration of two twins or a king-sized bed. Bathrooms are ensuite with a shower and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness through the canvas windows. The retreat is constructed from natural light wood, ensuring a sense of harmony with its forested surroundings.

The central area houses a swimming pool with expansive decking that flows through to a dining area and small boma. The deck area is adorned with deck chairs and there are various sheltered enclaves for relaxing. Leading out from the main wooden walkway is a second swimming pool, complete with sun loungers, umbrellas, and a pool bar. But that&'s not all - there&'s also a lounge/reading area branching off from the meandering walkway, offering a complete sense of privacy. On-site, there&'s also a small spa treatment room where treatments can be booked in advance.

Eager safari-goers can tailor-make their own activity schedule. Most guests opt for a full-day excursion into the Khwai River section of Moremi, and boat cruises through the Okavango Delta’s reed-lined channels. Visitors wanting something a little closer to home can join game drives and sundowner sessions on Mankwe’s concession, which has recently extended its traversing rights to include the prime predator territory of the Khwai riverfront. African wild dogs, elephants, honey badgers and a colourful array of birdlife are frequently spotted around camp.

With only ten rooms, Mankwe has a very intimate and laid back feel. Perfect for relaxing with family and friends. Wildlife moves through camp regularly. Game viewing from the comfort of your room, or whilst enjoying a dip in the pool is quite an experience. Full days out or shorter activities in the area can be arranged depending on how you would like to spend the day.

The Mankwe guides grew up in the area and offer wonderful insights and first hand knowledge, for an absolutely authentic safari experience. Wifi is available in the Business Lounge.
