TRAVELLING BAND SCREENS

Also referred to as band screens or travelling screens.

The travelling band screen is a self-cleaning screen with millimetric mesh apertures that removes all types of debris from the water to be screened so as to protect the downstream industrial applications from being obstructed (heat exchangers, drinking water and desalination plants, chemical and LNG plants, irrigation networks, etc.).

Travelling screens are installed in a compact civil structure. BEAUDREY screens come in all sizes, layouts and flow rates. They can accommodate the largest tidal variations.

ATLAS-SSI manufactures “zero-carryover,” Dual-Flow Screens and Dual-Flow Conversion Screens that are built to last.

ATLAS-SSI Dual Flow traveling water screens are heavy-duty and require very little maintenance. They provide clean and debris-free water while minimizing marine life impacts.

Installed in a channel in which flows the water to be cleaned, the screen consists of a set of rectangular screening mesh panels carried by two endless chains. The panels travel up and down again between an upstream wall plate and a downstream partition with a central, outlet aperture set across the channel.

Travelling screens are used to arrest the small debris contained in the water so that the downstream users remain unobstructed and clean (condensers, exchanges, spray-water circuits, membranes etc). Debris can be of all types including fish, shrimps, jellyfish, grass, man-made refuse, plastics, seaweed, etc. They are especially suited to deep pits. They are used in thermal and nuclear power plants, LNG terminals, desalination or fertilizer plants, drinking water and irrigation plants.

The water enters along both sides of the upstream wall-plate, flows through the upstream face of the panels on each side, where the debris are arrested. The water then flows out through the back, partition aperture.

The debris-laden panels travel up above deck level, around the top and down again. One or two spray pipes with fantail jet nozzles set on the down stream side of the panels within the screen's head structure, back-wash the panels, remove the debris which are projected into a collection trough. They travel in a deck flume to the debris disposal system (basket, separator, etc.)

The screens are normally stopped and are washed periodically when obstructed by debris. Permanent rotation can be provided.

BANDGUARD TM is a high efficiency dual flow traveling fine screen used in inlet works of a wastewater treatment plant. The high efficiency band screen prevents screenings accumulation and its exceptional capture rate significantly reduces maintenance costs in downstream equipment.

With the BANDGUARD TM screening is achieved by passing the sewage through a vertical band shaped screen curtain.  It comprises an assembly of plastic perforated panels, clipped and fastened into stainless steel frames which are fastened to stainless steel conveyor chains that form two endless loops.

The screenings enter the centre of the screen, inside of the screen curtain where solids are retained and transported out of the flow by driving the band, moving the dirty panels from the screening zone to the panel cleansing area.

The band is sprocket driven via a motor and gearbox. A spray bar fed by final or primary effluent is used to clean dirty panels before the panels are re-submerged. The cleaning system is orientated to achieve full panel cleaning whilst depositing all debris in the internal launder system, which feeds out through the side of the screen.

Each panel has replaceable side seals manufactured from UHMWPE fitted between the chain and panel to effect a close tolerance seal with the chain guide fitted to the screen structure. 

The main structural side plates are designed and manufactured for strength and rigidity.

The high strength chains run in steel and UHMWPE guides and are driven by sprockets attached to the head shaft running in  adjustable bearing units.

The drive is from a close coupled motor and gearbox. Variable or Dual speed drives are available as options and the screens can be supplied to suit ATEX Zone 1 environments. 

The BANDGUARD TM  is fully guarded by covers fastened to the main screen structure thus encasing odours and wash water aerosol. The screen can be supplied with odour extraction pipework flanges where requested.

The BANDGUARD TM can be inched forward and reverse, in case of mechanical stoppage.

  • Screen widths of up to 4m (13ft) and depths of 20m (65ft) can be provided.
  • Panels with 2mm to 6mm diameter holes are available.
  • 2mm Ø perforated panel has an estimated SCR from 95 to 98% .
  • 3mm Ø perforated panel has a certified average  SCR of 95% [UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) – National Screen Evaluation Facility (NSEF)].
  • 5mm Ø perforated panel has an estimated SCR from 88 to 89%.
  • 6mm Ø perforated panel has a certified average  SCR of 85% [UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) – National Screen Evaluation Facility (NSEF)].
  • Stainless steel and carbon steel construction is available.
  • 200mm, 300mm and 450mm chain options.
  • Typical Hydraulic flows of  43l/sec (1 MGD) and higher.

The Brackett Green CF200 Band Screen was introduced in 1991 and is the largest model CF screen available. Ovivo’s proprietary sizing technology and program software ensures proper sizing of the CF200 screens for the control of critical entrance, screen and exit flow velocities, while maintaining acceptable headloss and plant hydraulics.

With an aperture range of 2 – 6 mm (0.08 – 0.24 in) and capture ratios of 85 – 97 percent, the CF200 provides one of the highest screenings capture rates in the industry today.

All screens are high quality, durable, stainless steel, rigid frame constructions with anti-friction bearings and low-pressure jet cleaning, which prevents blinding and the need for brushing or manual cleaning.

High performance two-dimensional screening

The patented mesh panels eliminate hair pinning or stapling of hair and fibrous solids. They incorporate tapered holes that minimise potential plugging from wedged debris and kitchen grease.

The Brackett Green CF200 Band Screen is a great alternative to screen panels of steel or other metallic mesh, which increase the risk of hair pinning. These designs additionally require brush cleaners, greater wash water pressures, water volume and increased service and maintenance.

The Brackett Green CF200 Band Screen has the following additional features and benefits:

Flow pattern for effective screening

The Brackett Green CF200 Band Screen utilises a center flow pattern. Water enters the center of the screen then flows outwards on either side of the moving band, through the patented screen panels that run parallel to the flow. The water then discharges through the outside of the screen, before being sent downstream. Screenings are retained on the inside of the panels and are discharged by low pressure water jets.

Research has shown that the center flow pattern is the most efficient engineering design today, effectively reducing, eliminating and controlling both carryover and bypassing of screenings at the inlet works of a sewage treatment plant.

The Dual Flow screen is an outward-facing band screen. Flow enters the screening elements from the outside of the plates and flows to the center of the U-shaped screen belt where it is discharged. Screenings are carried to the top axis by the filter elements where they are conveyed to the screenings discharge. Large items like stones are lifted by steel fingers placed between every few sets of filter elements. 

Screen panels are made of stainless steel mesh for water intake applications or perforated plate for heavier load applications.  A special sealing configuration prevents carry over to the downstream side of the channel.  A spray bar positioned at the top axis of the screen belt provides the primary cleaning, with an optional brush available for heavy debris loading.

Geiger ® Centre-Flow Travelling Band Screens

For decades, Geiger ®  and Passavant ®  Centre-Flow (In-to-Out) Travelling Band Screens have been operating successfully in water intake systems in power stations, petrochemical and sea water desalination plants, steel works and other industrial plant all over the world.

As the last cleaning stage for water intakes, finest screening/filtration is of particular importance to protect downstream equipment such as pumps and condensers reliably against clogging. Geiger ®  and Passavant ®  Centre-Flow (In-to-Out) Travelling Band Screens are the well proven design variant of conventional Travelling Band Screens for minimized life cycle costs and the most efficient extraction of fine debris. Many of our machines have been running successfully at sites for over 40 years on seawater and river water applications.

Compared to Dual-Flow band screens (out-to-in flow pattern), our Centre-Flow band screens avoid the accumulation of debris under the machines, which would be difficult to remove from the bottom of a channel. The spraying of the panels takes place automatically at the upper part and is following the natural gravity direction, thus minimizing water leakages to the operational deck.

Depending on site requirements, the mesh panels are either flat or roof/halfround-shaped. With roof or halfround-shaped mesh panels a higher efficiency of the machine size can be achieved and bigger particles cannot drop back so easily. Special features are the maintenance-free side bar chains to guide the mesh panels, a highly efficient, scale- like sealing between the screening elements, chain and curved guidings as well as the chain track on the clean water side. The adjustable band speed allows optimum adaptation of the flow rate and screen washing. Excellent cleaning of the mesh panels is achieved by means of an intense washing; the wash water system is adjustable and controllable via local/remote control. A nozzle cleaning device with automatic control is available as an option. The chain tension can be adjusted from the operating floor level. For sea water applications, the chains and chain guidings should be protected against corrosion by means of efficient special anodes forming part of our long proven and project-tailored cathodic corrosion protection system with impressed current.

Travelling Band Screens/Traveling Water Screens can also be equipped with fish buckets to help protect aquatic life. Our travelling water screens with the patented fish bucket system are EPA 316b-compliant as the best available technology (BAT) to reduce impingement. The fish are gently removed separately from the debris by lower pressure jets and from a lower height into a separate trough for the return into the water bodies. Due to the special coating of our fish buckets and a special hydraulic form, fish are prevented from sticking to the metal as well as from jumping out of the buckets during the uplift.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.
