Pink‘s New Flight Path: Pop’s Bionic Woman on Her Death-Defying Stadium Tour and ‘Trustfall’ Album

In a world of hyphenates,   Pink all but dares us to come up with one to describe her place in the pop landscape, besides anything so earthbound as “singer-songwriter.” Maybe “gymnast-therapist” would do it — her appeal mixes literal feats of daring with songs of dysfunction and its hoped-for cessation. As she gets to the inevitable moment in any of her shows where she acrobatically flies over arenas in a harness while encouraging her audiences to get it together before it’s too late, it’s not always clear whether the work she’s doing should be subject to American Psychological Association or Federal Aviation Administration approval.

Popular on Variety

She is not kidding about the hip replacement; hip surgery was just one of the things that had her on the operating table during the pandemic. She is freshly scarred but undaunted, as a Pink tour without aerialism is like a Pink album without multiple uses of the word “fuck.”

“Having breaks is good for my voice. Not so good for the body,” she says after putting Habanero Mountain Guy outside to sniff the sea air. “Especially during COVID — I gained 36 pounds. All I did was make sourdough and then eat the sourdough. And then I had not just the hip surgery but double disc replacement in my neck. So now I’m the bionic woman. I’ve lost those 36 pounds, and I am stronger than I’ve ever been in my life. And I’m ready to go, and I’m ready to get the  hell  out of here. I’ve been home way too long.”

There are motivations, especially when you have Tina Turner’s manager, Roger Davies, as your own. Asked if she ever queried Davies about any secrets to Turner’s success in keeping the touring regime going as long as she did, Pink says it never occurred to her — she knows what she witnessed with her own two eyes.

“I saw Tina when she was 69 in Christian Louboutins, running around the stage, full choreography, like a crazy person. And I thought to myself:  Shit. So now I have no excuse.  I look at the greats and I wanna keep up. I want to keep pushing it and be better — a better human, a better mom, a better daughter, a better sister, a better performer, a better writer. And age works against you, right? But at 43, I’m stronger than I’ve ever been in my life. I could kick my 33-year-old ass.”

As for the specifics of moonlighting as a stuntwoman, she says, “Well, it’s always interesting the day the insurance company comes to yes or no your insurance. And every time they say yes, I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me? They actually said yes?’” She shrugs. This may be the time when she’ll need to trust that the crew that keeps her aloft really does consider her World’s Best Boss.

The real test of Pink’s nerve is that she has enlisted two of the most powerful female vocalists on the planet, Brandi Carlile and Pat Benatar , as her direct support acts for the “Summer Carnival” stadium tour (the North American part of which begins July 24 in Toronto and ends Oct. 9 in Phoenix, following a European leg in June). Pink and Carlile go back — they wrote a still-unrecorded song together 15 years ago. “The first time I heard her sing, I was in my car and it was when her voice cracks during ‘The Story,’ and I had to pull my car over,” Pink remembers. She met Benatar at October’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, where Pink and Carlile were saluting Dolly Parton by singing “Coat of Many Colors” while Benatar and husband Neil Giraldo were getting their own honors. Pink figured, and had it confirmed, that Benatar had to be classically trained to be singing like that at 70. “I ran up to her that night and was like, ‘Can we be best friends?’”

“I feel like I’ve found three voices in 43 years,” she declares. “My first voice was opera, because I used to sing ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and ‘Les Miz’ — things like that. Then my second voice was R&B-ish, but I sounded like Alvin from Alvin and the Chipmunks. But I was also smoking, and I was steadily getting raspier and raspier, which is why Janis was an easy sell for me. I loved it, but then it started going too far. Billy Mann, my friend and songwriting partner, sat me down and said, ‘I think you’re at the point now where you have to ask yourself, “Am I a singer or a smoker?”’ Hmm. ‘Shoot. I think you’re right.’ So I quit.” This happened around 2010, when she was pregnant with her first child, Willow, now 12. “And then I found this grown-up voice that I have and got two octaves back. My voice has never been stronger. But I don’t have that rasp anymore, and I miss that — I wish I could have kept a little bit of it. But,” she adds with a shrug and a sip, “I chose life instead.”

Making the conscious choice to go on is a big theme of “Trustfall.” Not entirely ironically, it starts with a ballad about death and the afterlife, “When I Get There,” prompted somewhat by her father’s death in August 2021, as well as mortal thoughts that arose when both she and her son contracted bad cases of COVID. Starting the album off with a non-banger was as conscious a choice as everything Pink does.

“I feel like we’re all in this constant state of  overwhelm , and so we put our feelings away just so that we can get through a day. I wanted to find a way back to the truth and the authentic feelings. So opening the album with that, instead of like, ‘Hey, let’s ease into each other,’ it’s like, ‘No, no. Sit down. I want to talk to you. We’re gonna clear all the bullshit away and have a  conversation .’ That’s how I am as a person. If you ask me how I am, how much time do you have? So ‘When I Get There’ as an album-opener was my way of saying, ‘Let’s talk about real stuff.’””

It’s easy to get the sense that for many fans, it’s “ me and Pink against the world”  — whether that has to do with her support of the LGBTQ community or advocacy for older women or disaffected-youth friendliness. “A lot of my friends have teenagers — I do not yet, thank God — and they all have just debilitating anxiety.” She describes playing the new song “Turbulence,” which describes life in terms of an extended panic attack, for her daughter’s friends, “and, like, five of them were just sobbing.” The findings showing that more young people than ever describe themselves as dealing with crippling depression or anxiety disturbs her — “I don’t know where we’re going with this” — even if it’s not surprising to a woman who’s included the word “trauma” in album titles and written existentially brooding anthems like “What About Us.”

She leans forward to deliver all of us existentially challenged grown-ups a pep talk, like she did with her daughter’s friends that day she played them “Turbulence.” “Just let it go, man,” Pink advises. “Just be a dolphin and let that go right off your back. We have to have joy too. We have to laugh. We have to love. We have to cuddle. We have to suck the marrow out of the bones of life, because we’re still here. The wildfires haven’t come yet.” Spoken like a true Santa Barbara-area resident, invoking the joy of sea mammals and the prospect of everything going up in flames all in the same breath.

Pink may be known for her feats of derring-do, but there’s no fearlessness like withstanding the slings and arrows of being a reasonably outspoken public figure. Twenty-three years into a career, does she have the satisfaction of thinking that, by now, people get her?

“I definitely don’t think a large far-right contingent gets me at all. and they don’t want to and they’re never going to, because I represent so many things that they hate. And I think people that only listen to the singles don’t get me, because there’s so much else. When I meet people, they’re like, ‘God, you’re not scary.’ And I’m like, ‘Well, don’t tell anyone. That’s my cover, man.’ But I’ve kind of stopped caring a little bit. I’m sad about people thinking that being an opinionated woman is a bad thing. I’m sad. That deeply saddens me. But I’ve stopped trying to explain it.” It’s not something she’s only ever experienced from afar. “I think it sticks with me because my husband told me, when we met, ‘he was like, “’I thought you were just like this angry man-eater.’ And I was like, ‘I am . But, I’m also this.'” Carey Hart got over it; not everyone did. “The things people say to me online, it’s insane,” she says.

The most personal song on the new record may be the harrowing ballad “Lost Cause,” sung from the point of view of a woman who just wants to be told she isn’t a piece of shit. Written by Stephen Wrabel, Sam de Jong and Sam Romans, it resonated with Pink because of a conversation she had with Hart. “He came to me a long time ago — at a good moment, when we  weren’t  arguing — and said, ‘Hey, when we argue and you say really mean things, it hurts me and I really need you to stop.’ I was blown away, like, ‘Whoa, what a beautiful thing to do, Carey, to bring that up at a time where everything’s going well.’ Time moves on and you both get mean after a while, and the world is mean,” she avows, attesting that charity needs to begin at home.

“And,” she adds, further explicating the theme of “Lost Cause,” “I’m like, ‘You can call me a loser, but just don’t tell me I’m unredeemable.’ Everybody  is redeemable. Unless they’re gone — unless they’re in the dirt. I don’t believe old dogs can’t learn new tricks.”

Pink’s Daughter Willow, 12, Performs With Her Mom On Opening Night of Summer Tour 2023

Pink's husband, Carey Hart, shared a video of the special moment that his wife and daughter got to sing together at a massive stadium in England.

Pink

Pink , 43, was joined by a special and talented guest to kick off her Summer Carnival 2023 tour on Wednesday, June 7. The Grammy Award winner’s daughter  Willow , 12, came on stage at the University of Bolton Stadium in England and the duo performed their 2021 song “Cover Me In Sunshine” together. The beautiful performance was shared on social media by many, including Pink’s husband  Carey Hart , 47, who was not at the concert. In Carey’s video , the camera panned to all the fans in the audience watching in awe as Willow sang into the mic on stage. After performance, Willow waved to the crowd and got a big hug and kiss from her proud mom .

(function () { var zergnet = document.createElement('script'); zergnet.type = 'text/javascript'; zergnet.async = true; zergnet.src = (document.location.protocol == 'https:' ? 'https:' : 'http:') + '//www.zergnet.com/zerg.js?id=92014'; var znscr = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; znscr.parentNode.insertBefore(zergnet, znscr); })(); View this post on Instagram A post shared by Carey Hart (@hartluck)

Carey, who also shares son Jameson Moon , 6, with Pink, who he married in 2006, praised Willow’s performance in his Instagram caption. “So proud of Willz to get up on stage w/ mama @pink !!!!!” the pro biker wrote. “Must be a surreal moment for mama to have w/ her lil girl on stage. Looks like 1st show of the tour kicked a**!!!!!” he added. “Can’t wait to catch up end of this month and see for myself. Summer is grind time.”

In the comments section, Pink’s fans applauded Willow for singing on stage next to her mom. “I was there and it was awesome. Mama Pink was emotional,” one fan said. Another wrote, “Wow so freaking awesome.” A third fan said that Willow was “magical” in her performance with Pink. Pink is on her summer tour until March 2024. She has shows across Europe, North America, New Zealand, and Australia.

Pink

Pink’s daughter has followed in her mom’s footsteps as a singer. Before Willow featured on “Cover Me In Sunshine” in 2021, Pink showed off her daughter’s singing abilities with cute videos on TikTok . The mother-daughter duo also teamed up in 2020 for The Disney Holiday Singalong where they performed a duet of the classic “The Christmas Song.” Willow has even adopted Pink’s performing talent, like when she joined Pink on stage at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards for an impressive aerial routine, which is one of the pop icon’s signature moves during her concerts.

Pink and Willow aren’t the only famous mother-daughter pair performing on tour right now. Beyonce has been joined by her 11-year-old Blue Ivy Carter   for several shows on her Renaissance  World Tour. Bey and Blue even wore matching outfits for their shows in Paris and London .

Styx: Caught In The Act Live (1984)

Product Description

Product description.

P!nk: Live from Wembley Arena 2006

Slick and earthy at the same time, Live from Wembley Arena picks up where Live in Europe left off. In this case, Pink, looking like Wendy O. Williams in black eyeliner and blond crop, is captured in one London show, circa December 2006, rather than in highlights from several. Since the first live DVD, she released her fourth album. There is, naturally, some overlap between the two videos--notably, "Trouble" and "God Is a DJ"--but the singer adds several songs from I'm Not Dead , like the title track, "U + Ur Hand," and "Stupid Girls." This time, however, there are no covers, except for a nod to "Sweet Dreams Are Made of This" during "Get the Party Started." Along with her talented troupe of backing dancers, she busts plenty of moves herself, particularly on the flamenco-flavored "There You Go." Then, on "Fingers," she ups the ante with death-defying Cirque Du Soleil-style acrobatics while suspended above the stage. There's also a lot of strong singing, although she must surely be lip-syncing during "Fingers" (it's hard to carry a tune while doing somersaults in the air), and her voice does start to abandon her during "What's Up." Fortunately, the audience helps out by joining in on the chorus. Pink confirms her versatility by performing "The One That Got Away" and "Dear Mr. President" in acoustic mode. And the number of costume changes--around a dozen--would surely turn Cher green with envy. As they say in England, "Jolly good show!" --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Watch Pink's dazzling aerial performance with daughter Willow at Billboard Music Awards

The mother-daughter duo delivered a beautiful corde lisse routine to their duet "Cover Me in Sunshine."

pink tour videos

Pink showed exactly why she's deserving of the Icon Award with a stunning performance at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night.

The pop star, 41, and her daughter, 9-year-old Willow Sage Hart, took the awards show stage and pulled off an aerial routine amidst a medley of the singer's songs.

What began with Pink carrying out Willow and laying her down to sleep to the sound of "Cover Me in Sunshine" — which is the duet this mother-daughter pair released this year — then lifted off through a corde lisse performance.

Pink threw it back to more of her classic songs without Willow, including "Who Knew," "Get the Party Started," and "Just Give Me a Reason." But it was this sweet moment that viewers were still talking about the morning after.

Pink had earlier posed with her kids, Willow and 4-year-old Jameson Moon Hart, on the red carpet as she prepared to accept the Icon Award later that night.

"Willow nailed it!" she said during her acceptance speech about her daughter's performance. "Jameson, nailing it."

Pink and Willow previously collaborated on a cover album of the Greatest Showman soundtrack, which featured them singing "A Million Dreams." In an interview leading up to the Billboard Music Awards , the singer told EW that she's obsessed with "A Million Dreams" songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who also wrote her song "All I Know So Far."

"Ever since I redid 'A Million Dreams' with Willow I've been in love with them," she said. "I'm a total theater nerd, and I thought who better to write the story of my life than story writers like that – and so, the song ended up being a letter to my daughter."

Watch Pink and Willow's performance in the video above.

Nicki Minaj Treated A ‘Pink Friday 2 World Tour’ Concertgoer To Their Own Medicine After They Tossed Something At The Rapper Onstage

Flisadam Pointer

Nicki Minaj and Cardi B may not see eye to eye , but they do agree on one thing — disrespectful concertgoers should be dealt with immediately.

Yesterday (April 20), during Nicki’s Pink Friday 2 World Tour stop in Detroit, Michigan, an attendee attempted to ruin the event for everyone. As Nicki rapped her crossover hit “ Starships ” (despite vowing never perform it anymore ), a ticket holder seemingly tossed an object at the musician.

Fortunately, the item didn’t make contact with Nicki. Instead, she blocked the trinket, then she hurled it back in the direction that it was thrown from. In the clip captured by a bystander, venue security was seen working their way to the section in question. However, it is unclear if the culprit was tracked down. The show continued without any further interruption.

Nicki threw that sht right back & was so quick with it 😭 pic.twitter.com/J7ycUGZ67w — NATE (@NATERERUN) April 21, 2024

At another point of the concert, Nicki surprised fans with a few guest cameos. To pay homage to the Motor City, she brought out two rappers from the city. One of those musicians was none other than hometown hero Big Sean . The duo performed their 2011 “ Dance (Ass) ” Remix.

Fellow Detroit native, Sada Baby , made his way onto the stage for a performance of his 2020 single “Whole Lotta Choppas.” Nicki was sure to deliver her viral verse from the song’s remix for all to recite back to her.

Nicki Minaj hasn’t addressed the incident online. So, all’s well that ends well.

Nicki Minaj Throws Item Back into Crowd After Nearly Getting Hit by Object Onstage

The singer was performing on her Pink Friday 2 World Tour when a fan threw an object at her from the crowd

Nicki Minaj was left unimpressed after a fan threw an object at her onstage.

In a video shared by Pop Crave on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Sunday, April 21, the rapper could be seen performing in Detroit on her Pink Friday 2 World Tour when a pink item was launched at her from the crowd.

Blocking the object with her hand, Minaj, who was performing her hit "Starships," then crouched to pick it up before throwing it back into the audience.

Minaj, 41, appeared to be shocked by the moment as she turned back with her mouth open, before returning to performing.

A representative for Minaj did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment about the incident.

Prince Williams/FilmMagic

The “Barbie World” singer is the latest in a line of stars to have an item thrown at them onstage.

In June 2023, Bebe Rexha was hit on the forehead with a phone during her concert at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City.

The New York District Attorney's Office told PEOPLE at the time that Nicolas Malvanga was arrested on several misdemeanor charges: two counts of third-degree assault as well as second-degree aggravated harassment, third-degree attempted assault and second-degree harassment.

"I was trying to see if I could hit her with the phone at the end of the show because it would be funny ,” Malvanga, 27, of New Jersey told police, according to the criminal complaint.

Rexha’s injuries consisted of a split eyebrow that required stitches. After being escorted off the stage, she was treated by a medical team at the venue, as seen in footage shared on X , and taken to a nearby hospital.

She then shared a post on her Instagram of her stitches and a black eye with the caption, "I'm good.”

Other stars have also spoken out about objects being thrown onstage.

“This trend of throwing things at performers while they are on stage must come to an end. It’s so disrespectful and very dangerous. Please just enjoy the music I beg of you
" Charlie Puth wrote on X after Rexha, Ava Max and Kelsea Ballerini were hit during concerts.

During a Weekends with Adele show at The Colosseum in Las Vegas last year, Adele also said, “Have you noticed how people are forgetting f---ing show etiquette at the moment. People are throwing s--- on stage. Have you seen that? I f---ing dare you — I dare you throw something at me. I’ll f---ing kill you.”

"Stop throwing things at the artist ... These people have lost it. Can you imagine?” she added.

Nicki Minaj Throws Object at Fans After Nearly Getting Hit by Item Onstage

Refusing to put up with any disrespect, Nicki Minaj ended up getting heated towards some fans during her Detroit performance.

In a video shared by Pop Crave, Minaj was seen onstage performing her Pink Friday 2 World Tour. All of a sudden a pink item was launched at her from the crowd.

After blocking the object with her hand, Nicki Minaj stopped performing her hit track Starships and threw the object back into the audience. She then resumed the song.

The object-throwing incident comes just weeks after Nicki Minaj suffered a wardrobe malfunction during a live show. While performing at the Kia Center in Orlando, the rapper accidentally unhooked one of her yellow dress’ straps. The wardrobe malfunction exposed her entire chest.

After she quickly covered her chest with her hand and jacket, Minaj was seen mouthing, “Oh my God, my boob.”

After she was able to get a microphone, Nicki Minaj declared to the audience., “Meanwhile my boob is out and no one f—ing told me. Thanks, Barbz. My whole boob was out. See, that’s what I get for talking about people.”

Nicki Minaj Previously Told Her Fans to ‘Never Threaten Anyone’ On Her Behalf Again

Although she’s grateful for her fans, Nicki Minaj also understands boundaries. Last fall, she told fans, also known as Barbz, told fans to stop threatening others on her behalf.

“Dar Barbz, be sure to never threaten anyone on my behalf,” she declared, per Us Weekly. “Whether on the internet or in person. Whether in jest or not. I don’t [and] never have condoned that.”

Wanting fans to be focused on the positives of her music, Nicki Minaj pointed out the release of her recent album Pink Friday 2. “It feels so surreal [and] euphoric,” she said about the album.

Although Minaj didn’t reveal what sparked her to make the statement, many speculated it was due to her ongoing feud with fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion. Even after telling the Barbz to chill out, Nicki continued to slam Megan in person and online.

During a streaming performance in Jan. 2024, Nicki Minaj called out Megan Thee Stallion for throwing people in the music industry under the bus. She then got personal by talking about the rapper’s dead mother.

“You better go conjure up your mother and apologize,” Minaj stated. “That’s disgusting.”

Megan Thee Stallion’s mother died in 2019 following a battle with brain cancer. Megan previously praised her mother for influencing her music career. “She taught me how to be the woman I am,” Megan said while accepting Glamour Woman of the Year in 2021.
