The Les Folies de la Marquetterie cuvée is perhaps the one that is most attached to the Taittinger Champagne House, because it is made from vines planted around the Marquetterie estate, a castle belonging to the house. Absolutely fabulous tasting event ... even given the caves are closed due to construction. When you have a great bottle of bubbles, frankly that's all you need!!

Photo of Robert H.

We went to 2 different champagne caves when we visited Reims. Taittinger was by far our favorite tour over Veuve. The business seemed much more family run and less commercialized. We also learned more about champagne than the other tour. Our guide was very nice and it was nice to go in a small group tour of 5.

I am a bubbles nut, so hard to really pass up on one of the most prestigious brands in the world! Took a train to visit the town of Reims and quite honestly made the jaunt on foot to visit the winery. Obviously, the Champagne region is split between to major cities, but I opted for Reims, mostly due to wanting to visit two large Champagne houses. The experience involved at Taittinger is similar to most in the area, but you are really coming for the history and the mass cave system! The tour itself takes a little over an hour but has some great photo ops as well as history to take in including the famous UNESCO cave site. You end with a flight of choice (What you prepaid for) and some time to mingle with the guests and staff. When it comes to the production side, do not expect to see much of that as its not included, but other local champagne houses give you more insights if needed. The bubbles themselves are divine, so no complaints there, but please keep in mind this is not a US based tasting where you could ask for additional pours, they are quite strict about your flight, so keep that in mind. Great stop and would highly recommend!

A truly great experience - A MOMENT AT THE TABLE OF THIBAUD IV, COUNT OF CHAMPAGNE... A unique offer from Tattinger (while their cellars are temporarily closed for work); different from all the other champagne houses... Set in an amazing historic building, Elia and Judith were our hosts and they were lovely - so engaging, they made the experience very special. My friends and I highly recommend booking a reservation and taking it all in. Located in the heart of Reims (20 rue de Tambour) you can then head out to explore the city. Close to the train station (only a 10 minute walk) if you are travelling to Reims for a day visit. It was great - just go...

We had an amazing time visiting the Taittinger cellars. Our tour guide was informative and knowledgeable. We loved learning about the chalk caves and the history of the cellar. The champagne was delicious and I would recommend visiting to anyone in the area!

I was there. And it was a beautiful establishment. I did the tour. Paid for that and to have the best of their tastings. I walked out with 4 expensive bottles in May. These were to be taking back to America. I should have gotten about 80 Euro back at duty free. They did the paper work wrong. Besides waisting my time to go to the duty free place; the expensive bottles of Champagne I will Never enjoy being cause a big commercial winery should know better. It you have a bad experience the wone does not taste as good. I emailed and they never even replied. Pretty bad because I study wine. I will never put a Taittinger champagne on any of my private jets.

I have never been a huge fan of champagne until I visited this place in France. My wife surprised me with a wine tour and I was on the fence about it but this place here blew me away. Going 20 meters underground and seeing how they age the champagne was unbelievable. Then the champagne tasting was amazing. The different flavors of champagne were all unique and great in their own way. I suggest you try this place when you get to France it's worth the money!!

Taittinger is a very large and well-known Champagne house, whose quality runs the gamut from the mediocre to the outstanding. The tours are very touristy, but they run several times a day, can be booked in person or online, and offer you a choice of tastings. At the end of the tour, they take you to a large reception hall for your tasting, which was kind of impersonal and rushed. We chose the L'instant Absolu tasting (41€ when we went, currently 45€), which includes the tour plus 3 glasses of Champagne, including their tête de cuvée, the Comtes de Champagne. I didn't care for the first two wines -- the dosage was a bit aggressive for me -- but the third, the Comtes, was sublime. 3 1/2 stars

Did the cave tour and tasting! Was very interesting and the guide was lovely! Tasting was yummy! I purchased a few champagne wine stoppers and brought them back to the states! they are the best thing I've ever bought! They keep carbonation for days and we're only 5 euros!!

I chose Tattinger for a champagne tour as they were doing a monthly special for the tastings, where each tasting set was discounted! The tour was informative with a video, a tour of the cellar and the opportunity to try their champagne. They offer 3 different tasting sets with a chance to try their common brand and vintage/cuvee. Overall, thought it was a good tour to learn about the champagne bottling process. Tips : -bring a jacket as cellars do get cold -despite cellars being below ground, some of them have built in lifts for those who can't walk up and down the stairs

Taittinger champagne tour. Reims, France.

Taittinger is a family-owned champagne house with its headquarters in Reims, built above 4th Century Roman cellars where faces are carved into the chalk walls. Run by Claude Taittinger Pierre’s son its values are inherited from those who created the Champagne House. Over three generations, a number of people have left their mark on the history, reputation, spirit and style of the Taittinger family. The site is on an old monastery that was destroyed in the French revolution. The abbey church, the Basilica of Saint-Remi, is still standing just a block away and has a more impressive interior than the Notre Dame Cathedral. Thousands and thousands of bottles lay in the caves which may well creep under the nearby church and houses. The flagship wines of the house are the Comtes de Champagne (100% Chardonnay) and Comtes de Champagne Rosé (100% Pinot Noir). We then did Mumm and finally a small family house, Leclerc. It was the perfect order. 3 films and a film of Reims, Hautviller and Epernay which includes the L’Avenue de Champagne.

Planning is required. It is best to both book your tours in advance.

And book your restaurants. The restaurants in the main street in Reims are bulk and fast, we were disappointed both times we ate there. However, in the back streets of Reims, good restaurants can be found. Here, once again it is best to plan and book. See our film on Reims for a good dining option. Tell them we sent you – they won’t have a clue who Doris is, but then who does?

Taittinger tasting, 3 delicious champagnes, Reims France

What to expect on your Taittinger wine tour

Yes, you should visit champagne country at any time of year. Yes, you should take a tour with a smaller winery to get to understand the process. And YES, you should definitely take a Taittinger wine tour! Stories, photos, and logistics after the jump – so read on!

May 16, 2018 //  by  Luke and Meagan

Last updated on August 2nd, 2018 at 12:38 pm

When you hear “champagne country”, it certainly catches the imagination – you can envision leafy, sprawling vineyards, blue skies, and opulent wineries. While the leafy bits may be seasonal, this is all accurate. So, when we planned our trip to Reims , we knew that the two highest-priority things we wanted to do were A) visit the Reims cathedral, and B) taste some of Reims’ world-famous champagne, and perhaps do a Taittinger wine tour, or tour with one of the other champagne houses in town.

But, we had some pretty serious questions and logistics to hammer out beforehand. Good news is (spoiler!) it was all worth it!

First of all, should we visit champagne country in winter?

Champagne country vineyard views with A L'Allure Champenoise, Reims France

YES. It’s cold, and it’s probably going to be windy, so bring a jacket and your camera and get ready to be wowed.

Boyfriend Perspective:  If you have to ask this question you should definitely go so you understand that you don’t ever have to ask this question again. It’s amazing!! Just bundle up.

How to decide which champagne house to visit

Front gate emblem of Taittinger champagne house, Reims, France

Here’s the bottom line: there is NOT a bad choice here. However, your choices include Taittinger, Mumm, Veuve Cliquot, Moet & Chandon, Pommery, Bollinger, and Ruinart (among others).

From this list, we decided to tour Taittinger (pronounced “tay-tan-zhay”) for the following reasons:

  • Affordability. Touring big champagne caves isn’t necessarily cheap, but Taittinger offers one of the more affordable suites of cave tours and tastings that we found.
  • Seasonality. This was perhaps the biggest deciding factor. We wanted to visit Mumm, but Mumm’s champagne caves don’t open for tours until mid-to-late March, and we planned to visit in late February. WOMP. But Taittinger was open and happy to show us around.
  • History. It’s hard to find a big champagne house that doesn’t have a long history. Taittinger, in particular, dates back to the 1700s, when the founder began working closely with local monks who had discovered and refined the process of creating bubbly wines. The caves, themselves, are a part of the crayeres , or Roman chalk mines, that run under much of Reims and are certified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Notoriety . Ever walked to the champagne section of your local wine store? Most of the big champagne houses are represented. And there’s nothing quite as cool as being able to toast a celebration with a wine whose origins you’ve become very familiar with.
Boyfriend Perspective: You know, I wasn’t into wine very much – champagne even less so. Touring the house, learning the history of champagne, and tasting different types provides an education and appreciation of an art form. I also found out I have a classy palette and just hadn’t had good champagne yet. Taittinger’s Vintage and Grand Cru are delicious! I absolutely recommend getting multiple tastings with your tour so you experience the differences.

Booking a tour with Taittinger

Taittinger champagne tasting and winery tour tickets, Reims France

You have three very easy options when it comes to reserving your spot and booking a champagne cave tour:

  • Reserve online. Head over to taittinger.com and pick your ideal day and time. From there, choose what type of tour you’d like (basically, how much you’d like to drink after you finish walking through the crayeres), and provide your payment info, and you’re ready to go!
  • Walk up. If you’re visiting in the tourist season (late spring, summer, or early fall), DEFINITELY don’t just walk up. That said, if you’re visiting in a less busy time, you can book and pay onsite during their business hours. This is what we did, and it was extremely easy.
Boyfriend Perspective:  Select how many tastings you want, pay, and tour. The hostess was pleasant and spoke English, so those like me (who can’t speak French) can enjoy the tour too.
  • Book with a third party. If you’d prefer to avoid planning all the logistics, there are plenty of fantastic trips to Reims from Paris and from Reims out into champagne country that will make sure you stop at the incomparable Taittinger, among other of the big champagne houses.

Getting to Taittinger

Place Saint Timothée, Reims France (By Fab5669 - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0 (Wikimedia))

Got 30 minutes? You can probably walk from downtown Reims, near the Notre Dame cathedral, to Taittinger, in less time than that. Bonus, you’ll be very close to the Saint Remi Basilica, which you absolutely have to explore if you love stained glass and religious relics, AND you’ll quite possibly pass the oldest timber-framed house in Reims, pictured above.

You can also take a quick Uber or a taxi if you’re not feeling the mood or weather for walking. If you have a car and choose to drive, know that parking is extremely limited outside the winery, so give yourself enough time to find a spot.

Appearance-wise, don’t expect anything showy from the outside. The whitewashed exterior is very noticeable, but not ostentatious like Veuve or Pommery might be. It actually feels very modern and clean.

Boyfriend Perspective:  I think the conservative exterior allows it to blend in to surrounding buildings, besides the champagne speaks for itself with exception.

The Taittinger champagne cave tour

Spiral staircase to Taittinger champagne caves, Reims France

After booking, we waited in the lobby for our Taittinger wine tour to start. There, they have a beautiful wall of champagnes, and a scale replica of what the area would’ve looked like a few hundred years ago or more, when the abbey that originally occupied the site was still standing. All excellent for quick photos 😉

Then, our very glamorous tour guide ushered us into a screening room, where we got to sit in theater seats while we watched a video introduction to the Taittinger family and business. After about 15 minutes, our guide retrieved us, and led us down a spiral staircase into the caves.

It’s worth noting that most of what are called caves are actually deep, well-supported cellars. This is where much of the wine is stored or rests. She showed us graffiti from when the caves were used as bomb shelters in the first World War, a much-older effigy to Saint Nicaise (patron saint of wine), and also showed us how the traditional wine racks work and how the bottles are manipulated so the sediment settles properly.

Saint Nicaise chalk statue in the Taittinger champagne cave, Reims France

And then she led us into the cray è res , themselves. While walking through underground caves is certainly dark, you can still see the chisel marks in the walls from the Roman, Benedictine, and French hands that dug out and created the form of these chalk mines over the centuries. There’s even Roman graffiti on a couple of the walls!

We ended by walking back up another spiral staircase and through the tasting room, which features an exhibit of bottles decorated by famous artists, and an exhibit of Roman and Benedictine winemaking tools found onsite.

Boyfriend Perspective:  The sheer number and variations of bottles in the chalk mines was impressive, and it’s not even the largest cellar they have! O_o

Champagne tasting at Taittinger

No Taittinger wine tour would be complete without samples! When we booked, we chose the budget-friendly splurge tour called L’Instant Devoile , which provides 2-3 tastings. During the tasting, you get a great idea of what “mouthfeel” is. Frankly, I’ve always loved wine, but I wasn’t really sure what “mouthfeel” was supposed to quantify. When you’ve got bubbles of different sizes and vivacity, it makes a lot more sense – that factor completely changes the taste and experience of each wine.

Boyfriend Perspective: By this point, I’m a very happy person drinking champagne. Unsurprisingly to me, I want to upgrade for more tastings.

We also got a quick crash course in what else to look for in champagne tastes and vintages. For instance, brut is going to be the champagne you want – brut champagnes have no additional sugars outside of what’s left over from the fermentation of the grapes. It’s tart, and it’s what any self-respecting Reims citizen would drink. Demi-sec – champagne with additional sugar added – is really only produced for export to places, like the US, that have a much bigger sweet tooth.

We got to hang around the tasting counter, chatting with our guide and other visitors/tour-takers, and then finally wandered on out to walk off our tasting as we returned to town.

Final thoughts about our delightful tour of Taittinger champagne

This champagne house is beautiful, the tour is well-done, and the brand and product are steeped in an enormous amount of history. If you want to get a solid feel for one of the industries that this lovely little town has become so famous for, this is a great way to do it. Plus, you might even leave with a delightful little buzz 😉

One more final thought… book a champagne tour of Taittinger (or any other legendary champagne house) ASAP!

Have you toured a champagne house in reims or epernay what did you think let us know in the comments, andddddd…. please pin for later 🙂.

A Taittinger wine tour sounds like an exceptional experience, Luke and Meghan. What convinced me to add this place to my bucket list is that champagne house. How long does the tour last?

The tour is a couple hours long – not bad at all, but long enough to help you feel immersed in champagne culture 🙂

Champagne tour and tasting at Taittinger in Reims, France.

champagne tour taittinger

On our recent drive home from Grasse to Calais, we decided to stop over at Reims. Here’s a photo of the beautiful Reims cathedral.

I was last in Reims more than 10 years ago for a French wedding, and all I could remember was a small quaint town, lots of feasting and the customary champagne sampling.

The Abbey was destroyed during the French revolution, and all that now remains are the cellars.

Above is a reconstructed model of the Abbey. It’s now the location of Taittinger champagne house.

Did you know that the names on the labels indicated the sweetness and dryness of the Champagne?

‘Brut’ refers to dry Champagne with low residual sugar. ‘Brut Nature” champagne has the least amount of sugar.

I also learned that “Sec” indicated the sweetness of the Champagne, with ‘extra Sec,’ ‘Sec’ and ‘demi-sec’

Made from top quality Chardonnay grapes grown in ‘Grand Cru’ vineyards, Comtes de Champagne is one of the greatest Blanc de Blancs champagnes.

Finally, I leave you with another fun fact:

Did you know that Champagne bottles have names according to their sizes? For example, a Magnum is 1.5 litres, a Jeroboam is 3 litres and a standard bottle or Champenoise is 75cl.

If you fancy a short break, then I recommend a visit to Reims and a tour of Taittinger.

Have a wonderful week ahead.

Take a virtual tour of the Taittinger champagne cellars

Maison Taittinger

Maison Taittinger is offering history buffs and wine lovers alike a chance to nosy around its legendary cellars from the comfort of their own armchairs.

Located in the heart of Reims, Champagne Taittinger ’s famous cellars contain magnificent Gallo-Roman chalk pits. Open all year round, Taittinger welcomes over 80,000 visitors from around the world on guided tours and bespoke wine-tasting experiences – and now those unable to travel no longer have to miss out. The new virtual tour plunges visitors 18m underground to discover the incredible stories behind the famous cellars and explore the many relics of the past.

In the fourth century, these chalk cathedrals were patiently dug out to extract blocks of chalk. Some 900 years later they would become the basement of Saint-Nicaise Abbey. They were then extended by a network of tunnels linking cellars, crypts and vaults used for storing the champagne wines sold by the Benedictine monks. The Abbey was destroyed during the French Revolution, but its underground structures remained intact.

Maison Taittinger

Vitalie Taittinger, the president of Champagne Taittinger, said: “As one of the few champagne houses owned and run by the family on the label, we are sharing this virtual tour to reveal the hidden history of our cellars with more enthusiasts of travel and bubbles than ever before.  We feel this is particularly important while it remains so difficult to travel right now.  We can share true treasures with this online tour, which takes budding historians on a journey that explores the wealth of heritage and history contained in our Taittinger cellars – and all this from the comfort of our e-visitors’ own homes.”

This brand-new experience comes in addition to the usual cellar tour proposed by Maison Taittinger, which focuses on the creation of its champagnes .

“We wanted to create a virtual tour because it fits with our DNA,” added Vitalie.  “We are delighted to be able to share this invaluable heritage, of which we are merely its humble guardians, with as many people as possible.”

So what are you waiting for? Explore the Taittinger Champagne cellars now !

Here, in the heart of Reims, the residence of the Comtes de Champagne was used for the coronation ceremonies of the kings of France. Many lords and artists were also hosted at the residence, which is now owned by Taittinger Champagne. It is a place full of history in beautiful surroundings. Thibaud IV is undoubtedly the most endearing figure of the counts of the Champagne dynasty. Secretly in love with his aunt, Blanche de Castille, mother of the future Saint Louis, he inspired the idea of courtly love. In 1239, he left for the Crusades and brought two treasures from the East that had never before been seen in the Christian world: the Damask rose and an example of a new grape variety, an ancestor of the Chardonnay grape. The beginning of the legend of Taittinger...

The night is more beautiful

Taittinger Nocturne is a sweeter champagne, made from 40% Chardonnay and 60 % Pinot Noir and Meunier from 35 vineyards. It is the result of several harvests undertaken when the fruit had reached perfect maturity. The uniqueness of its mix and its long maturation period in the cellars gives it its fullness and smoothness. It works well as an accompaniment to dessert, or simply as a digestif on its own after a meal.

Nocturne

A NOCTURAL SERENADE

This champagne is a beautiful blend of Chardonnay (40 %), and Pinot Noir and Meunier (60 %) from 35 different vineyards and is the result of several harvests.

The champagne ages for a minimum of four years before being disgorged. The ‘sweet’ mix (17.5 g/l of cane sugar) and its long maturation period make Nocturne a mature, rich and full-bodied champagne. This is confirmed by its smoothness and creaminess, whilst still retaining a considerable level of freshness. Its pale-yellow colour with a shimmering sparkle, and its subtle, delicate nose reveal delicious aromas of white flowers and ripe fruit, notably yellow peaches and dried apricots. The flavour of raisins and fruit in syrup spread across the palate are also present, culminating in a beautiful nocturnal serenade of the senses...
