14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

senior trip programs

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

Intrepid Travel

A leading adventure tour operator known for its efforts to make travel accessible to all, Intrepid Travel offers a good mix of bespoke and ready-made itinerary options that can be adapted to suit your group's comfort level. Intrepid's Accessible Tours are especially inclusive, with trips that are designed for every type of traveler. Whichever trip you decide to book, you'll have access to local destination specialists to help you choose the perfect places to stay as well as organize transportation, activities, and guided tours, depending on your needs. The company's Walking & Trekking trips, suitable for a range of fitness levels, are especially popular with seniors, though adults of all ages are free to join in.

YMT Vacations

In business since 1967, YMT Vacations designs all-inclusive trips with mature travelers in mind. Prices cover hotel accommodations, guided sightseeing tours, baggage handling, and the expertise of tour directors and driver guides. Destinations include Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, North America, Central and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, among others, and the company arranges travel for popular events such as the Rose Parade in California. A number of river cruise and transatlantic sailing options are also available.

Grand European Travel

Grand European Travel is an AARP-preferred travel provider (check the website for members-only discounts) that promotes itself as a one-stop shop to help clients plan their desired travel experiences. The company represents a collection of 30 travel brands — including the likes of Trafalgar and Insight Tours — which, altogether, cover seven continents. Offerings range from budget to luxury getaways, and everything from cruises to land tours. Thinking of taking a multigenerational trip? Browse the company's family experiences section, stocked with tours fit for all ages, whether you're into all-inclusive European river cruises or exploring U.S. national parks.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, suggests four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. Guests of all ages should be able to find a destination and tour that's best suited for their interests and fitness level.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Learn more about Intrepid's COVID-19 policy

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m traveling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Learn more about solo travel

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

Thank you for your inquiry

You've worked hard your whole life and dreamed of traveling to several exotic locations. Now that you've retired, it's time to hit the road (or runway). Perhaps you want to travel with your spouse, join a group of older adults, or join family or friends on their vacations. The options are limited only by your pocketbook and your imagination.

In this guide, we'll cover travel tips for seniors, ways to save, and group trips to explore.

Senior Travel Tips

Before you travel, be sure to purchase travel insurance to cover unexpected events such as trip cancellations, medical expenses, lost luggage, and other incidents associated with travel. Since medical issues are more likely to come up for older travelers, it makes sense to purchase travel insurance in case the trip must be canceled due to a medical problem.

Pro Tip: Looking for travel insurance but don't know where to start? View our list of the best travel insurance for seniors in 2024 .

Check what your health insurance covers when you're out of the country. Many Medicare supplemental insurance plans do not provide coverage outside of the US. Travel insurance provides this much-needed coverage.

Although most people dream of traveling during retirement, according to a report,  Journey to Healthy Aging: Planning for Travel in Retirement , only 18% of Americans have specifically saved for retirement travel. This means that most Americans will need to be creative to fulfill their wanderlust after retirement.

Some ways you can save on travel and vacation costs include:

  • Group trips : Because travel agencies purchase tickets in bulk, they can pass the savings on to you. Group travel is generally led by expert guides steering you towards the best things to do while at specific locales. If you're traveling solo, it's a great way to do so without feeling alone.
  • Off-season travel : Since you're retired and no longer tied to a time clock, you have the flexibility of traveling during off-peak travel times. This allows you to take advantage of lower rates. Flights on Monday through Wednesday, especially those during the late morning or afternoon, cost less. Off-season travel gives you further savings on accommodations and attractions. Three great places to find discount flights are The Flight Deal, Secret Flying, and HolidayPirates.
  • Honey travel : According to Travel+Leisure, Honey generally offers hotel discounts better than those you'll find on other booking sites.  Honey is a free service (a browser extension) that automatically searches for discounts and coupon codes.
  • Senior discounts : Many organizations and retailers offer senior discounts, so be sure to inquire about them as you make reservations and as you travel. Members of AARP , AAA, and veterans' groups can receive discounts at hotels, airlines, tour providers, and car rental agencies. The National Park Service sells an $80 (plus a $10 handling fee) for a lifetime senior pass to those 62 and older. Some airlines offer a limited number of senior fares. Many hotels offer senior discounts .
  • Stay at hostels : Hostels offer affordable places to stay when traveling. Hostels are popular with younger travelers, so be prepared to run into a lot of partiers during your stay. But as one senior shared, if there's too much activity in a hostel, they won't have lost much money should they decide to move on. Sites to help locate a hostel include Hostels.com, HostelWorld.com, Hosteling International, and Hostel Bookers.
  • Stay at an Airbnb : An Airbnb offers someone's home as a place to stay instead of a hotel. Accommodations may be an entire home or someone's spare room. You can find unique accommodations ranging from a castle to an igloo.
  • Additional resources : Kiplinger.com provides a list of sites for the best travel deals to help you save money. Cruise Sheet and Vacations To Go are great places to locate discounts on cruises, although they may not be senior-specific.  Intrepid, Kiwi Experience (New Zealand), Context Travel (walking tours), and BusAbout are great places to find discounts on tours and excursions, especially last minute. But again, they may not be senior-specific.

No matter what kind of organization or group you choose to travel with, it’s important to plan sufficiently for your trip. If you have special needs, touch base with the group to ensure they can accommodate your needs. The  Society for Accessible Travel & Hospitality  offers travel tips and access information for travel destinations. They also have a great listing of disability travel websites.

Senior Travel Groups and Clubs

  • Senior travel clubs and groups :  Senior travel clubs/groups organize trips for members, offering vacation packages at great rates. It also provides a wonderful way for solo vacationers to travel with a group of like-minded seniors.  ElderTreks, Row Adventures, and Walking the World specialize in adventure travel, something many older adults are searching for. Before joining a club, be sure to check with the Better Business Bureau and read their literature, especially the fine print, to ensure the group you have chosen is reputable.
  • Educational travel : Road Scholar is a not-for-profit organization and was once known as Elderhostel International .  It offers thousands of affordable learning adventures for adults, both nationally and internationally. Some scholarships are available for those who don't have the financial means to participate.
  • Voluntourism : A volunteer vacation allows you to give back in a multitude of ways and enjoy various cultures, depending upon the organization you volunteer and travel with. The trips aren't free, but they are rewarding and provide an economical way to visit a particular area. National and international opportunities are available. Some organizations to check out include REI Adventures, American Hiking Society, Discover Corps, Global Volunteers, and Earth Watch. Many others are available.

Benefits of Senior Travel

Travel during retirement is more than an enjoyable activity. It's good for you!

  • It keeps you active, and older adults who are more physically active have lower rates of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and many other diseases.
  • It stimulates and challenges your brain as you encounter new people, cultures and environments.
  • It reduces stress and improves your mood and outlook on life.
  • It strengthens and deepens friendships.

And, it's just plain fun! So, get out and enjoy a vacation. You've earned it!

One of the key benefits of travel insurance for seniors is coverage for trip cancellations. Whether it’s due to unforeseen circumstances or last-minute changes, travel insurance ensures that seniors are reimbursed for any non-refundable expenses, such as flights, accommodations, and tour fees.

In addition, travel insurance provides coverage for medical emergencies that may occur while traveling. This includes expenses related to hospitalization, emergency medical treatments, and medications. It is essential for seniors to review the policy carefully to ensure coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, as this can vary among insurance providers.

It’s important for seniors to carefully review the policy details, including coverage limits, deductibles, and exclusions, before purchasing travel insurance. Consulting with a licensed insurance agent can provide clarity and help seniors make informed decisions.

4 Senior Travel Programs for Women Who Love to Learn

Learning is a lifelong process and today’s travelers are combining learning with travel as never before. When it comes to senior travel, learning vacations offer opportunities to expand horizons, make new friends and stay mentally and physically fit.  Women can choose from many senior travel programs that include fun, enjoyable learning opportunities.

What Is a Learning Vacation?

A learning vacation is any travel experience that teaches you something you did not know before. Learning can happen in many places, such as a formal classroom setting, an art or music studio, on a research or outreach team or in a new place.

Choosing a Learning Vacation

As you research senior travel programs, you’ll want to consider several factors. For example:

Location. Will you travel far from home, or look for a learning vacation near you? The farther you travel, the more your learning vacation will cost.

Weather. If you will be spending much of the day outdoors during your learning vacation, what will the weather be? Do you have proper clothing and footwear? If not, you’ll have to buy some items before your trip begins.

Activity Level. How active will you need to be during your learning vacation? Are you fit enough to tackle the experience, or will you need to do some pre-travel conditioning? Check with your doctor and tour operator if you have doubts.

Topic / Program. What topics and program types interest you? Do you prefer hands-on learning or the give-and-take of classroom discussions? With so many trips to choose from, you can search for programs and areas of study that fuel your passion for learning.

Cost. How much do you want to spend? Does the cost of your travel program include transportation, or must you pay for that separately? Can you save money by staying in a dormitory-style room, and does that option match your travel style? Be sure to research all the angles and discuss your questions with your tour operator before you book.

So, that said, here are a few learning vacations for you to consider:

Road Scholar Learning Adventures

Road Scholar is a not-for-profit organization that has been around since 1975. They offer more than 5,500 learning adventures , including trips to Cuba, France, Costa Rica and every state in the U.S. Their mission is to inspire adults to learn, discover and travel.

Road Scholar’s learning adventures engage expert instructors, provide extraordinary access, and stimulate discourse and friendship among people for whom learning is the journey of a lifetime. Road Scholar offers some of my favorite senior travel options.

Lucky Star Art Camp

Once a year in the autumn, women gather in the Texas hill country to learn, explore the outdoors and share their journeys at Lucky Star Art Camp . Lucky Star is much more than a series of art workshops. It’s a community of women who treasure creativity and bring this spirit of artistic expression into daily life.

Depending on instructor availability, classes might include photography, cheese making, calligraphy, creative writing and music, to name a few. Optional activities, such as swimming, kayaking, yoga and Irish dance, are available (some extra classes require payment of an additional fee).

Tip: Register early, as class sizes are limited and popular classes tend to fill quickly.

Earthwatch Expeditions

Earthwatch Institute is a nonprofit organization that conducts scientific field research, connecting top-notch scientists with people from all walks of life who are interested in science and the environment. If you go on an Earthwatch expedition, you’ll spend most of your time working on research projects and analyzing the data you and your team members have collected. Earthwatch sends research teams all over the planet, so you can choose a location and project that interests you.

Tip: Earthwatch expeditions can be physically demanding, so you should read the online Expedition Briefing (trip details) very carefully before booking. If you don’t get much exercise now, discuss your options with Earthwatch and plan to spend time training for your trip.

Oxford University Summer School for Adults

If you’re looking for a more traditional learning experience, consider applying to the Oxford University Summer School for Adults (OUSSA) in Oxford, England. This prestigious university offers approximately 40 one-week accredited courses every summer for adults who love to learn.

Offerings include literature, science, architecture, theology, ethics and more. Coursework includes pre-arrival assignments and an end-of-course assessment; CATS points will be awarded to students who successfully complete their assignments. You can live on campus to get the full university experience or find your own lodgings in town.

Tip: Although OUSSA enrollment closes in May, you should apply as early as possible, preferably before February of the year you wish to attend, because classes fill quickly.

Augusta Heritage Center of Davis & Elkins College

The Augusta Heritage Center preserves, practices and promotes the folkways, dance and music of West Virginia and Appalachia. For ten weeks each summer, adults and older teens can participate in themed, week-long Augusta Heritage classes at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia. Themes include Old-Time, Irish, Cajun and Creole, Bluegrass and Blues and Swing, among others.

While music and dance hold pride of place at Augusta, you can also take classes in folk arts and foodways, as well as special classes that correspond with a particular week’s theme. Teens are welcome to participate, making Augusta a wonderful location for a grandparent / grandchild learning vacation.

Tip: Elkins can be very warm during the summer months, but evenings may be cool, so you’ll want to plan for a variety of temperatures as you pack.  Consider adding a few extra days to your trip to explore the natural wonders of West Virginia before you return home.

Senior Trips Senior educational trips are a fantastic type of travel, multiplying in popularity. For retirees and active seniors unfamiliar with this concept, seniors' adventures are a fun alternative to the typical beach or ski vacations. They offer participants a chance to explore a new destination and simultaneously learn something new, master a new skill, or develop a favorite hobby.

Whether you'd like to improve your photography skills by going on an expedition, exploring the ruins of Mexico or Europe, or traversing the globe with a friend, there is an exceptional travel program for you! Discover what hundreds of our senior travelers already know: aging is fun!

Since 1989, thousands of senior adults (age 50+) in Baytown and surrounding communities have joined us on our travel adventures around the globe. Tours vary from 7 to 15 days and are considered "soft adventure" trips that concentrate on destinations' culture, history, and natural attributes.

Mission  Our mission is to inspire adults to learn, discover, and travel. Our learning adventures engage expert instructors, provide extraordinary access, and stimulate discourse and friendship among people for whom learning is the journey of a lifetime.

SENIOR TRIP PROGRAMS

Love the camp experience but want more adventure.

Mohawk’s Senior Trips program might be perfect for you! For new and returning campers ages 14 to 15, the Senior Day Trips Program is the perfect combination of our traditional camp program and off-camp adventure.

SENIOR PROGRAM

U.S. Chamber Letter on H-1B Nonimmigrant Visa Renewals

240415 comments h 1 b pilot state final.

Jon Baselice Vice President, Immigration Policy, U.S. Chamber of Commerce

April 16, 2024

April 15, 2024

Jami Thompson Senior Regulatory Coordinator Visa Services Bureau of Consular Affairs U.S. Department of State

Re:   Notice, Pilot Program to Resume Renewal of H-1B Nonimmigrant Visas in the United States for Certain Qualified Noncitizens (88 Fed. Reg. 88,467-88,470, RIN 1400-AF79, December 21, 2023)

Dear Senior Regulatory Coordinator Thompson:

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce appreciates the opportunity to comment on the above-referenced notice. We were pleased when the State Department announced its intentions to launch this much-anticipated pilot program last February and our members welcomed the publication of the notice that created the program last December. Feedback from member companies has been very positive. When a company’s workers can obtain an H-1B extension without leaving the U.S., it provides both the employer and the employee with additional certainty that business disruptions can be avoided, deliverables can be completed in timely fashion, and companies are in a much better position to meet their business needs.

The Chamber is thankful for the State Department’s engagement with us as it designed the program’s contours and implemented it over the past several months. However, our members have conveyed to us that there are several ways in which this program could be built upon and improved. While we heard from many companies that had employees who have taken advantage of this pilot program, there were many other companies whose employees could not meet the eligibility criteria set forth under the pilot. In addition, several member companies that utilized the pilot informed us that some of the annotations made on their workers’ visas were sources of confusion for their businesses. We urge the State Department to rectify those issues by providing more guidance to the regulated community regarding how these annotations should be interpreted by the companies. Last, but certainly not least, the primacy that companies place upon workforce certainty cannot be understated and we believe it would benefit the State Department, our member companies, and their workers if this pilot program were made into a permanent program and the eligibility requirements were extended to cover several other visa classifications.

The Benefits of Expanding the Pilot Program and Making it Permanent

The Chamber appreciates the methodical approach the State Department took in reinstating domestic visa renewal capabilities for non-diplomatic, nonimmigrant visa holders. The launch of this pilot program represents the first time in roughly two decades that the State Department is performing this type of function for any type of nonimmigrant worker classification. Our members whose employees took advantage of this program understand that the Department’s decision to “start small” with strict eligibility criteria and only 20,000 application slots was driven by a desire to ensure that the program’s rollout was not afflicted by any significant processing hurdles. By that measurement, the rollout of the pilot program during this year has been a success, as the member feedback we’ve received has been overwhelmingly positive.

Nevertheless, there are many ways in which the State Department can build upon its successes and make this program much more beneficial not only to the American business community and the U.S. economy, but also to our nation’s security. The Department should make the pilot program permanent and extend eligibility for domestic visa renewals to applicants in many other classifications before the end of this calendar year. Making this program permanent will ensure that this tool can help the Department make the best use of its limited consular resources over an extended period of time. This is particularly important, considering the processing backlogs that it is currently confronting and the serious national security mission of the Department. Having the ability to redirect processing away from busy consulates will help improve their processing times and provide more consistency in adjudications. More importantly, it will free up consular resources that can be directed towards interviewing and investigating visa applicants that potentially pose a greater threat to the safety of the U.S. than foreign nationals that are already in the country and have oftentimes already undergone background checks on multiple occasions.

In addition to making the program permanent, the Department should expand the eligibility criteria of the current pilot program to include applicants for visas in several other visa classifications beyond the Department’s current limitations. As stated before, we understand the Department’s reasons for limiting eligibility to a subset of H-1B applicants whose visas were issued by Mission Canada or Mission India. However, allowing visa applicants from other countries and in different visa categories who do not pose a security risk to renew their visas in the United States will provide more companies with much-needed additional certainty as it pertains to their business operations. The State Department should expand this pilot program to cover as many visa classifications and as many individual applications as is practical.

Given that the pilot has been operating for only a few months, we can appreciate if the State Department desires to continue its methodical approach regarding any potential program expansion. If that is the case, we recommend that the Department consider the following categories in any future effort to expand the program’s eligibility constraints to the following cohorts of foreign nationals:

  • The dependents of all eligible principal H-1B nonimmigrants;
  • H-1B nonimmigrants that obtained their prior visa from other countries beside Canada and India, and expanding the issuance date eligibility criteria to cover more individuals, and;
  • Nonimmigrants possessing different visas in different classifications, such as F, E, J, L, and O, as well as any dependents and individuals accompanying the principal nonimmigrant to the U.S.

Feedback and Suggestions for Improving Domestic Visa Renewal Operations

As stated above, the Chamber received significant positive feedback from our members on the experience that their companies and their employees had in using the new pilot program. In fact, many of the companies conveyed to us that their employees that utilized the pilot obtained their new visas in a timely fashion. However, there were several suggestions that companies have for the State Department to improve the program’s operations moving forward.

One common refrain we heard from several companies was on the restrictive eligibility criteria preventing their employees from being able to renew their visa domestically. Multiple companies told us that the strict criteria prevented many of their workers from taking advantage of their program. Other businesses cited the inability of the principal nonimmigrant’s dependents to renew their visas domestically as a key factor in their worker’s decision to forego seeking to renew their visa domestically. These issues would be solved by the State Department expanding the program in the manner suggested above.

Another issue that has caused a significant amount of consternation for our members and their workers is the inclusion of an annotation of “not valid until ten days before the petition validity date” being included on the new visa stamp in the foreign national’s passport. Several companies have informed us that their workers spent a significant time worrying over what this meant for their status in the U.S. and whether it would inhibit their ability to return to the U.S. if they needed to travel internationally. The Chamber acknowledges that this language is included in the relevant section of the Department’s Foreign Affairs Manual (“FAM”), but it would behoove the Department to either revisit this section of the FAM or create a Frequently Asked Questions document that can help provide additional guidance to applicants. This additional information will provide individuals with a better understanding of what this annotation means for them and their ability to remain in the U.S., which in turn will help encourage more people to take advantage of the program.

Conclusion

We very much appreciate the State Department’s engagement with the Chamber throughout the process of reinstating this domestic visa renewal program. We hope the Department finds our feedback helpful as it seeks to expand the opportunities for hard-working foreign nationals to renew their nonimmigrant visas without having to the leave the U.S. More importantly, we look forward to working with the State Department to expand this pilot program in a manner that enhances business certainty and improves our national security.

Thank you for considering our views.

From the village to hans zimmer’s studio: music production and engineering students take on l.a..

For their senior trip, students visited iconic studios and met with industry-leading professionals. Program director Marc Lacuesta and student Caroline Chardoul shared highlights from their experience.

A group of students and instructors smile while riding a bus.

Music Production & Engineering students and instructors ride the bus to Los Angeles International Airport.

Being a Music Production & Engineering major at Interlochen Arts Academy comes with plenty of valuable experiences: chances to work on professional equipment, record live music, and take recording seminars. For 2024 seniors of the program, real-world relevance reached new levels with a weeklong trip to Los Angeles, California, headed up by Director of Music Production & Engineering Marc Lacuesta and fellow instructor Josh Hoisington .

In building the trip’s itinerary, Lacuesta and Hoisington relied on their own rich networks of friends and former colleagues—many of whom studied at Interlochen and are now working on some of the industry’s biggest projects. The group toured studios, met with industry professionals, and visited famous sites like the TCL Chinese Theatre.

“Considering the fact that we took our students to iconic studios and connected them with people who have worked on huge projects in the industry, this trip was comparable to, if not better than, many trips that college students studying similar subjects might take,” said Lacuesta.

Trip highlights

Highlights included a tour of University of Southern California, which hosts a highly competitive music production program. While there, students had the chance to talk with Jeanine Cowen , Chair of USC’s Screen Scoring program. The group also toured Royer Labs, where world-renowned ribbon microphones are produced; EastWest Studios, where icons like Frank Sinatra and The Rolling Stones have recorded their work; and The Village, another historic studio which features a room specially built for Fleetwood Mac.

Students were able to learn from Evren Göknar (IAA 82-83), who owns EGMastering, worked at Capital Records for 25 years, and is the author of Major Label Mastering. They also met session musicians like violinist and fiddler Lily Honigberg (IAC 08-09, IAA 10-13) and multi-instrumentalist Eric Rigler, who played penny whistle for “My Heart Will Go On” in Titanic .

For senior Caroline Chardoul, the highlight of the tour was visiting Hans Zimmer’s personal studio, where he created the music for Dune and countless other well-known films.

“There were massive modular synthesizers on the walls,” Chardoul remembers. “And he had an amazing setup in the middle of the room with basically a Batman chair. There were instruments piled high around every wall. It was very eccentric, but there was a crackle of creative energy in the air. You just knew some cool stuff had happened in there.”

Two female students pose humorously in front of a large RV.

MP & E seniors Ally Waddell (left) and Caroline Chardoul (right) pose in front of the RV used in the show Breaking Bad .

I felt like my world opened up a lot more. The whole time we were on the trip, I kept getting emotional, in a good way, that I was lucky enough to be there. Caroline Chardoul

Fun and fresh perspectives

Chardoul also appreciated the chance to talk to female professionals about their experiences in the music production industry, like Jett Galindo of Bakery Mastering.

“Jett told us about different organizations that support girls and women going into the music production industry,” says Chardoul. “She said that it's really important to come together and form a strong community because women are sometimes marginalized individuals in this field. The least we can do is to support one another and build each other up in that way.”

Although the trip was mainly focused on helping the students develop as future professionals in the industry, there was also plenty of time for the seniors to relax and bond with each other—which, for this group, meant seeing who could eat the spiciest sandwich from Dave’s Hot Chicken.

“Being in the same Airbnb, getting to have all these cool experiences together, and exploring this really dynamic city really brought us all closer together,” says Chardoul.

When asked how the trip impacted her, Chardoul finds herself grateful for the broadened perspectives she found.

“I felt like my world opened up a lot more,” said Chardoul. “The whole time we were on the trip, I kept getting emotional, in a good way, that I was lucky enough to be there. I was just overwhelmed with gratitude towards Interlochen, not only for accepting me into their community, but also providing us all with such a cool experience.”

Mainebiz highlights european scallop trip involving umaine faculty.

Mainebiz highlighted a trip to France April 14-22 that a group of chefs, seafood professionals, writers, economic development specialists and educators are taking to learn about techniques for handling and preparing scallops. Dana Morse, senior extension program manager and aquaculture lead at Maine Sea Grant and University of Maine Cooperative Extension, and Rob Dumas, UMaine food science innovation coordinator, are among the group members. The group’s goal is to apply what they learn in Paris, Normandy and Brittany to support scallop farming and commercial fishing sectors in Maine. “Our group’s trip to learn about the French scallop industry will help inspire and inform our efforts to get chefs thinking about using more of the scallop, how to tell the story of scallop sustainability through the lens of both environmental and economic perspectives, and how to better market Maine scallops as a world-class product,” said Dumas in an interview with Mainebiz.
