Our Salem Tours Come Highly Recommended
We learned so much and had such a great time on this tour! We got to see parts of the city we wouldn’t have known about and hear stories that you just can’t find anywhere else. The tour was very informative, interesting, and fun for our whole family!
Mike was an incredible storyteller/historian/guide/resource. He was engaging and wove great narratives while delivering the history. It was a great walking tour. Highly recommend!!
Excellent tour, I would recommend it to everyone!! Very entertaining, very good storyteller (even my boyfriend and I got a little bit scared) and an amazing job of sharing well-researched historical facts.
Michael was very nice and entertaining. Definitely one of the best tours I've been on. We started at the bell and circled around to a variety of haunted places. Learned about the witch trials, but also ghosts and vampire lore. There was a section on serial killers as well.
Dr. Vitka was great! You can tell he loves what he does and takes his craft seriously, And that is exactly who you want to be giving you a ghost/paranormal tour of Salem. He was kind enough to hang around at the end to answer our many questions. We loved getting his take on the darker side of Salem’s history and present day and had great insider suggestions of other things we should do during our stay. Highly recommend!
This was my 2nd walking tour with Dr.Vitka…I enjoyed this one as much as the first one. He is very entertaining, engages the crowd in all of his stories. He’s funny and knowledgeable. Definitely one of my favorite tours in Salem to be a part of!
Michael is an excellent guy. He has this voice that encapsulates you into the whole experience. Very informative. I especially liked the Houdini story. Would definitely go again. Even though the city is crowded, that’s to be expected, he was patient with waiting to let the others catch up.

Salem, Massachusetts, Is an Iconic Halloween Destination — How to Plan a Trip
Here’s what you need to know to plan a spooky trip to Salem, Massachusetts this October.
Just an hour outside of bustling Boston, Salem attracts countless history-loving and thrill-seeking travelers for its fascinating — albeit infamous — history. “Salem is best known for the infamous Salem Witch Trials of 1692, when 19 innocent men and women were hanged, accused of practicing,” says Stacia Cooper, interim director for Destination Salem .
HABesen/Getty Images
Fast-forward 330-plus years later, the small city (population: 44,000) has become one of New England's most famous fall vacation destinations , especially around Halloween. While a trip here during spooky season is one for the books, be prepared to brace the crowds. Last October alone, Salem welcomed over 900,000 visitors. So, if you, like hundreds of thousands of others, are considering heading to Witch City during spooky season, fear not: We’ve rounded up the best things to see and do in Salem this Halloween — as well as expert tips and insight — so that you can make the most of your visit.

Halloween Events in Salem
While Salem is home to a slew of spooktacular events, attractions, and festivities all year long, the Haunted Happenings festival , which takes place every October, truly takes the cake. According to Cooper, Haunted Happenings is “believed to be the largest celebration of Halloween in the world.” During this time, she says, “visitors can learn the history of the Salem Witch Trials, celebrate Halloween at a costume ball (there are ample to choose from ), and explore Salem’s witch shops.” Other can’t-miss events include the Howl-o-ween Pet Parade , psychic readings and seances, and The Salem Psychic Fair & Witches’ Market . Check out the official events calendar for a full rundown of this year’s festivities.
Spooky Things to Do in Salem
It’s almost impossible to be bored in Salem — especially if you’re visiting in peak season around Halloween. Read on for a few of our favorite thrilling things to do in town.
The best way to explore the city is arguably on foot, which is why Cooper recommends taking a walking tour. “There are dozens of thematic tour options that will provide you with an overview of Salem’s history [and] dive into the Salem Witch Trials history.” For one, you can’t go wrong with any of the guided ghost tours. Don’t feel like walking? Consider hopping aboard a trolley instead, which offers an equally fun experience.
Haunted Houses
If you dare, step foot inside one of Salem’s haunted house attractions , including the Haunted Witch Village at The Salem Wax Museum . Open weekends in October, this haunted house is supposedly Salem’s largest and longest-running haunted attraction. Witch Mansion , which is open from May through October, is another option complete with witches, ghosts, vampires, and more.
Witch Shops
Historic downtown Salem is dotted with witch shops, most of which are within easy walking distance of one another. Visitors can pop into The Witchery to create their own brooms, attend bookbinding workshops, or sign up for tarot readings. At The Cauldron Black , travelers can sign up for a slew of spiritual consults, readings, and rituals, including an evil eye removal spell session to keep the bad vibes away. Lastly, Stardust Salem , Omen , Pentagram , and Hex all offer a wide selection of witchcraft supplies like candles, incense, and spell kits, to name a few.
Witch Museums
Given its history, it is no surprise that Salem is home to several witch museums, including its Witch Museum , which has become one of the destination’s most beloved attractions. Housed in a former church, the museum offers immersive exhibitions to transport visitors back to 1692. Afterward, head to the Salem Witch Trials Memorial , which commemorates those who lost their lives as a result of the tragedy. Meanwhile, at the Witch Dungeon Museum , travelers have the unique opportunity to catch reenactments of the trials adapted from actual 1692 transcripts. Last but not least, no trip to Salem is complete without touring the Witch House , which is the former home of Judge Jonathan Corwin, who helped investigate the so-called crimes. While unconfirmed, rumor has it that some of the examinations of the alleged witches — and their accusers — took place inside the house.
Tips for Visiting Salem for Halloween
Put simply, says Cooper, visiting Salem in October requires savvy planning. “Accommodations book out a year in advance, and it is not uncommon for restaurants to have long waits.” That said, if you’re able, try to book everything — hotels, activities, dining reservations — as far in advance as you can. Speaking of lodging, staying somewhere downtown will be your best bet. In fact, some of Salem’s most popular attractions can be found within that same mile-long stretch, which means you can easily walk to and from the different shops and sights. If, for whatever reason, you’re unable to stay downtown, Cooper recommends taking public transportation since parking is near-impossible and traffic can be quite heavy.
When to Visit
“October is a great time to visit if you want to lean into the Halloween spirit, but the town will likely be crowded,” says Cooper. With this in mind, she’s also quick to note that Salem truly is an all-season destination. “There are festivals every month of the year, and most museums and attractions are open year-round,” she tells Travel + Leisure .
So, while fall is arguably the most magical time to visit, it’s not the only option. For example, those craving a quieter — albeit just as extraordinary — experience should consider visiting in late summer. What’s more, says Cooper, this is “a great time to visit and take advantage of the museums and landmarks” before the Halloween crowds begin to pick up.
Where to Stay
Staying downtown puts you within easy walking distance of Salem’s most notable attractions, and, fortunately, there are a handful of hotels here. The 40-room Salem Inn is spread across three historic homes in the heart of downtown, and two of the three buildings have outdoor courtyards and gardens. Take your stay to the next level by springing on a room with a Jacuzzi tub. Bonus: Breakfast is included in your room rate.
The Merchant , which is part of Lark Hotels, is another excellent option — and history buffs will love that George Washington stayed here back in 1789. (The room where he stayed is now the hotel’s aptly named George Washington King Deluxe room.) Amenities include an outdoor second-floor deck, heated bathroom floors, en-suite gas fireplaces in every room, and complimentary daily breakfast. Also part of the Lark Hotels portfolio is the Hotel Salem , a 44-room property that features funky suites with pops of color plus an eclectic mid-century modern aesthetic.
The Hawthorne Hotel is named after the famed American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne, who once lived in Salem. (Fun fact: The real House of the Seven Gables from his 1851 novel is located here, too). With its central location, two on-site restaurants, and elegant accommodations, the property is another popular pick. Meanwhile, The Daniels House , which dates back to 1667, is known as Salem’s oldest inn. The rooms — some of which have luxe touches like tubs and four-poster beds — feature original beams, moldings, and wood floors.
If you don’t mind staying a few minutes away from downtown, The Coach House makes a great choice. The 1879 mansion-turned-boutique hotel has been completely reimagined with sleek rooms and suites featuring contemporary decor and a neutral color palette.

How to Get There
While you can easily drive to Salem from Boston and other nearby cities, Cooper recommends utilizing public transportation. “The MBTA Commuter Rail connects Salem with Boston, Gloucester, Rockport, and Newburyport, and there is a Salem Ferry with service between Boston and Salem,” she says. Meanwhile, those arriving by plane should note that the closest airport is Boston Logan International Airport (14 miles away), followed by Portsmouth International Airport in New Hampshire (46 miles).

Halloween in Salem, Ma starts at The Haunted Neighborhood! Seven attractions are open in October at the Salem Wax Museum's Haunted Neighborhood. Salem Wax Museum of Witches and Seafarers: An open gallery style wax museum, which features 50 London made wax figures. The scenes in our galleries depict pinnacle figures and situations in Salem's history from its founding in 1626 through to Hysteria of 1692 and into the Mercantile trade of the 18th century. The galleries lead down into the interactive area which gives you the opportunity to learn nautical knot tying, do grave stone rubbing on recreated headstone from our landmark Charter Street Burying Point or you can get a first hand experience of detention during the Witch Hysteria by being locked in our life-size recreated jail cell. The Salem Witch Village: A 15 min guided tour concerning the myth versus the reality of witchcraft in both the ancient and modern world. Your tour guide, who is also a practicing witch, will take you through our indoor maze and demonstrate scenes that mark important landmarks in Witchcraft history. The tour discusses the origin of stereotypes such as devil worship, flying on brooms and black cats, different persecution periods such as the Salem Witch Trials and the Burning Times of Europe as well clarifies what it really means to be a witch today Frankenstein’s Castle: Salem's newest haunted attraction is inspired by the classic period of literary horror. Step into the lower dungeon of the Salem Wax Museum and enter the notorious dungeon of Dr. Frankenstein. Wind your way through the dark, curving hallways and see the darkest side of a madman's quest to create a most horrid monster. Please use discretion when purchasing tickets for children. The Haunted Witch Village: At night in October the Witches and Guardians leave the Village and the darker side of our maze comes alive. Our museum goes haunted with ghouls, goblins and all matters of things that go bump in the night. Salem's longest running and largest haunted attraction. Candlelit Ghostly Walking Tour: This half-hour walk through the streets of Historic Salem takes you to many of our most haunted houses and locations. This tour discusses the history of the building as well as the different accounts of spirit activity. The tour guide will advise you on the best methods of ghost photography as well as the different types of spectral evidence that appears on people's home photography. Some highlights of our tour are the Joshua Ward House, the Howard St. Cemetery and Old Salem Prison and the Lyceum. This attraction must be booked prior to date of tour. Graveyard Tour: We are fortunate to have on our premises the Charter Street Burying Point or Old Salem Burying Point, America's second oldest cemetery. The tour of this cemetery runs 30mins in length and discusses some of the cemeteries more colorful inhabitants like Colonel John Hawthorne, the notorious Hanging Judge of the Witch Trials, and Captain Richard More whose grave is the only known resting place of a Mayflower passenger. The tour will also discuss the Puritan funerary art unique to our cemetery as well as the Tercentennial Memorial to the Witch Trials victims located adjacent to the cemetery. It is strongly advised to book this tour prior to your arrival or you may be subject to tour guide availability. This tour is available as a compliment to our standard tours. A Spellcasting, Within the Witching Hour: A live presentation by a real practicing witch. She will take you through all the steps of a ritual circle from creating sacred space, to magical working to releasing your spells. Participation is welcomed. What we call infotainment. So come enter the temple. Followed by Q + A time permitting. This attraction must be booked prior to date of tour.

Guilty! A Salem Witch Trial
Ghosts + legends trolley, after hours ghost hunt.
They offer a number of different entertainment options. We got the combo ticket that included the “Ghosts and Legends Trolly” and “The Witchcraft and Ghost Experience”. My 9 year old was able to go to both. The Theater show (Ghost Experience) was an outstanding show. A little history, ghost stories brought to life, some mild scares, and great acting. Next we went on the Trolly. Our guide was BMW (Black Mary Widow). My 9 year old and I were in stitches. BMW is awesome. It reminded me of the Boston Duck Tours, but with a creepy/Ghost angle. Got some history, Ghost Stories, and BMW made it REALLY FUN! May family and I would do it again in an instant. Note: They sell out quick, so reserve your spot
Reviewing Ghost and Legends Trolley Ride with Black Mary Widow and Jack. Wonderful tour containing great information of Salem. Black Mary Widow made the tour an unforgettable evening she was truly awesome.
Let’s get to it. Salem abounds in museums and tours. And that’s ok, because it means that there are a lot of places to redirect the masses away from creating what otherwise would be ginormous lines to partake in this, the very best, of all of them. The historical presentation is simply the very best of all we experienced, and we did all the majors. It was not even close. But the tour! Holy moly!! Black Merry Widow is an outrageously funny and entertaining hostess. Most of the tours are a slight upgrade to pamphlets and any of the many small paperback books on the local sights. Gallows Hill is the same information as them all, but it comes with an hour of side-splitting laughs worthy of a comedy House. Kudos to BMW. Kudos to “Daddy” the driver. Kudos to the whole team. Oh. And be careful with your umbrellas. Just sayin…
As October’s autumnal veil drapes Salem in a morphic mist, the month moves on toward Halloween, or Samhain Eve. And if you can find your way to Lynde Street, the Gallows Hill Theatre awaits you. For framed upon this stage, all within thirty minutes, is a live re-telling of the city’s spectral past; rising far above the tawdry offerings tendered elsewhere in town. And it somehow seems that here, however briefly, you can go home again. For within this small darkened chamber, lies the dream Salem.
These people do an amazing job. If you have enjoyed the Gallows Hill show….do not miss the Lost Museum show. I don’t want to give anything a way….but DO NOT MISS THIS!!
A refreshing experience to a historic town. This trip to Salem started and ended with the best attraction that I have experienced in Salem, and by far the best “haunted” attraction I have seen anywhere!
My mother and I booked the trolley tour with the show, and it was definitely the best part of our trip to Salem.I actually expected the show to be cheesy but it was anything but. It fits only a small amount of people but the special effects and stories are both amazing and scary! The Trolley tour was absolutely spectacular, and Black Mary Widow had me laughing non stop. The Trolley tour takes you to sites you wouldnt normally see with other tours, however I strongly recommend doing the tour during the day, as it might be hard to see certain things once it gets too dark. Overall I loved both the show and Trolley tour and highly recommend it to everyone. BMW is HILARIOUS, engaging and if you do book I hope she is your tour guide.
The BEST Attraction in Salem, No Contest! The show was extraordinary. It was the perfect mixture of history and folklore, and the acting was professional. Nothing else can touch the level of entertainment this place provided. Top notch, all around.
We were talked into trying the Lost Museum walk through. Our tour guide was new and we were his very first group (and I believe the last group of the evening, but i’m not positive) and I WISH I could remember his name, but he was SO funny and awesome. I was surprised, I really WAS anxious and startled a few times, and my mother and son made ME interact with the guide and touch things because they were too scared. It was startling AND hilarious. I was so entertained, I loved it! Again, I wish I could remember his name, but if anyone reading this happens to know, please give him a pat on the back. We then settled in for the show in the theater. I honestly thought it was pretty cute, and a few people near me were pretty startled a few times. I could appreciate that a lot of work goes into the show. Finally we hopped on the Trolley. HILARIOUS. You will find if you’ve been to Salem before, or have been on a Trolley Tour (or walking tour) You will hear a lot of the same ghost stories and historical facts. So it’s up to the guide/narrator to really entertain you in how they tell the tales. Black Mary Widow is very good at what she does. You WILL be entertained. No doubt!
So glad we got tickets for the trolley tour with “Black Mary Widow”. She tells the creepy Salem legends with great skill, like the Baker Island story which she acts out while we see and hear the ocean – it was pretty eerie. Wonderful way to learn about Salem, see some of the sights and enjoy her wicked sense of humor. Loved it!
See what is in store for your visit to Gallows Hill.
Welcome to Salem's #1 Rated Haunted Pub Crawl
Tours are held nightly. Click book now below to see available dates and times.
Take a detour to some of Salem’s best and most salacious local watering holes to enjoy brew and booze while listening to sordid stories of ghostly ghouls and witches’ brews. It might’ve been a dry town when the Salem Witch Trials went down, but now, you can wet your whistle with some racy, tasty, tipsy fun and drink a glass or three as you listen to the best tales of Salem’s dark and tortured past.
Discover Salem's Most Haunted Places:
Mercy Tavern
It’s only fitting that an adults-only haunted pub crawl would take a stroll through a former seedy side of Salem: the Red Light District. When Salem became a major U.S. seaport, sailors began pouring in and, with them, drinking, gambling, and prostitution. Mercy Tavern showed anything but for the town of Salem, serving as a brothel that operated on top of the tunnels where murders ran rampant. Suck back one of their signature drinks, such as a Hocus Pocus and Room on the Broom, and settle in for some horrifying stories of hauntings by sailor spirits that you’ll need some liquid courage for.
The Hawthorne Hotel
Opened in 1925, the iconic hotel was named after Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of “The Scarlet Letter,” which he wrote as an apology for his family’s involvement in the Salem Witch Trials. The hotel has been host to famous celebrities, politicians, and public figures while also serving as the setting for the classic sitcom Bewitched. It also hosts spirits that are so terrifying the hotel no longer rents out rooms 325 and 612. Take a boozy walk with Salem Ghosts to discover why it’s considered one of the most haunted in the nation.
Turner’s Seafood at Lyceum Hall
It may be home to some of the best seafood in Salem, but the building is known for much more than this family-owned business. In the late 1600s, Bridget Bishop’s apple orchard occupied the area. The death of her third husband would result in accusations of being a witch, and ultimately, she was mercilessly hanged. Today, the food and drinks come with a side of unexplained activity and sightings. Pull up a chair, order your favorite cocktail, and hear the terrifying tales of the Lady in White, whose chilling appearance has been spooking staff and patrons for decades.
Joshua Ward House
The execution of Bridget Bishop was one of many that tainted the town of Salem. Prior to the construction of this house, the property was owned by the corrupt and malevolent Sheriff George Corwin, who was responsible for the Witch Trials. He was known to abuse his power by arresting suspected witches and robbing them blind. Following the disturbing execution of an innocent man, he was cursed with bad luck and would die at the age of 30 from a heart attack. His ghost now roams the halls, as evil as ever. A two-drink minimum is a must for this site.
Our tour guide Sam was excellent! would highly recommend.

Jena was incredible and so much fun to be around!
Andrew was great! He had lots a fun facts coupled with some comedic jokes. We really enjoyed the tour!
Connie Naqvi
Laina was fantastic! She’s very friendly. She did a great job explaining each site’s history.

“She’s a witch!” TV shows, movies, books, and plays have all been developed to tell the tales of a demented time in history where fables were fact, and the darkest work was done by the judges, reverends, and prosecutors. You’ll need a drink to soak it all in and digest the horror that was Salem. Add a cocktail to this fun, adults-out-to-play atmosphere while you enjoy the lively town that Salem is now!
Salem Ghosts Boos and Brews Haunted Pub Crawl introduces you to the places that conjured up its evil reputation and its devilish signature spirits. Visit Rockafella’s, whose Lady in Blue ghost is so prominent they created a cocktail in her honor. Sip on this spell-binding drink and hear about the minister who helped cover up her murder, and how his miserable spirit is forever trapped, tormented by his actions.
Walk with Salem Ghosts to learn about the darkness that once took over the town and see the locations where bodies once hung as warnings. Kids aren’t allowed at this club, and the drinks are necessary for this trip down horror lane – trust us.
Why Choose Salem Ghosts Haunted Pub Crawl
The witching hour calls for spell-casting cocktails from bars and restaurants that were built on bewitched territory. Take a tipsy walk with Salem Ghosts and uncover a magical world where fact is stranger than fiction, and the only thing stronger than the drinks are the spirits that seek revenge for their untimely deaths. Scary stories and spirits on spirits, this haunted pub crawl is solely for the grownups and ghouls.
The adults-only Salem Ghosts Boos and Brews Haunted Pub Crawl will quench your thirst for haunted history and ghostly drinks. So leave the kids at home and join us for your fill of spirits and spirits on this unique and unforgettable Salem drinking experience.
