Restored Kenskill trailer 19ft 3200.lbs towing weight. Lived most of it life in southern California. I have stored it in a carport for the last 3 years to keep it out of the elements. Everything works. No water damage or leaks. All original oak wood interior. Bathroom with toilet and shower. Propane hot water system. Roof mounted A/C. Propane furnace. Propane or electric refrigerator. 12 volt system with 3 deep cycle batteries and solar panel or 110 volt can be used depending on how you are camping. Pull out awning with a tent room that can be attached. Anderson no sway towing system. Trailer has been repainted. Very hard to find a nice vintage trailer and this one is rare. Never see these on the east coast. Ken skill was a top of the line trailer in its day. This one is ready for camping or park it and use as a guest house. Too much to list on all the work done on this beauty.

Vintage Trailer Field Guide

Cheers to successful partnerships! Bill Kennedy and Jim Brunskill partnered up to build the Ken-Skill Kustom Kamper in 1946. Kennedy built the iconic teardrop trailers, and Brunskill put up the money. When the teardrops sold out, they parted ways: Kennedy went on to found Ken-Craft Products, Inc. and Brunskill formed the Kenskill Trailer Corporation.

Vintage RV: The “Big K” Travel Trailer Mystery

This vintage trailer has me stumped—is it a kustom koach big “k” or ken-skill big “k".

A trailer with a 'K' logo on the front.

This vintage trailer has me stumped? Is it a Kustom Koach Big “K” or Ken-Skill Big “K"?

Welcome back to our popular vintage RV column—after taking a few weeks break, we're back with a vintage RV mystery of sorts. I snapped this shot in Nelson, B.C. some time ago, thinking it would easy to trace down what the heritage of this vintage trailer was—not the case?

However, I think I’ll go with the Kenskill. Evidently Ken-Skill or Kenskill company manufactured travel trailers from 1946 through the mid-1970’s.

According to the website, “Tin Can Tourist”: “The origin of this company was back in 1946 in Burbank, California with 'KenSkill Kamper'. Bill Kennedy made about 200 'teardrop' trailers by hand during the summers of 1946 and 1947. This 'modern teardrop trailer' design is the footprint for almost every modern 10 ft. teardrop manufactured today! These teardrop trailers were sold from 1946 to 1948 and then the company closed doors. Jim Brunskill was the 'money man' and went on to form a second company - 'Kenskill Trailers'. It is interesting to note that 'KenSkill' is a combination of the names of these two men. It is also interesting that while Jim Brunskill went on to be inducted into the RV Heritage Museum 'Hall of Fame', Bill Kennedy became another forgotten footnote in the vintage history books.

Originally located at 126 W. Alameda, Burbank, CA, Kenskill Corp moved to 11321 Goss Street, Sun Valley, Califorina. Kenskill, formed in 1955, had one of the larger “clubs” after Wally Byam's Airstream clubs. Kenskill Caravans had many members and they traveled to sites throughout the Western U.S. At one time there were over 200 members with 90% being Kenskill owners.

Jim Brunskill was founder and President of the company and Jerry Weiss was Executive VP. Mr. Weiss also owned the River Queen Resort in Bullhead City, AZ. In 1965, Kenskill was sold to Redman Industries. Brunskill & Weiss went on to form Executive Industries which made motorhomes.”

The History of Teardrops: Kenskill Trailers

1965 kenskill travel trailer

The origin of the Kenskill company goes back to 1946 in Burbank, California. Bill Kennedy made about 200 teardrop trailers by hand during the summers of 1946 and 1947. This modern teardrop trailer design is the footprint for man every modern teardrops manufactured today. These teardrop trailers were sold in from 1946 - 1948 and then the company closed doors. Jim Brunskill was the financial partner and went on to form a second company 'Kenskill Trailers’. It is interesting to note that 'KenSkill' is a combination of the names of these two men and while Jim Brunskill went on to be inducted into the RV Heritage Museum 'Hall of Fame’, Bill Kennedy became another forgotten footnote in the vintage history books.

Kenskill trailers were manufactured from 1946 to some time in the late 60's or early 70's. The company began manufacturing larger trailers along the way. The oldest model pictured is a 1948 nine foot model but they also made teardrop trailers for a few years. Some of the teardrops have been restored and are still being used. Going by restored models, the most popular teardrop (maybe the only model) was the Kenskill Kamper. According to some restoration professionals, Kenskills were among the best built of trailers from the Canned Ham era. Magazine ads from the mid 50's on do not include anything on teardrop trailers. In 1946, Kenskill made 18 trailers, by 1959 Kenskill celebrated 15,000 trailers.

Jim Brunskill was founder and president of the company and Jerry Weiss was Executive VP. Mr. Weiss also owned the River Queen Resort in Bullhead City AZ. In 1965, Kenskill was sold to Redman Industries. Brunskill & Weiss went on to form Executive Industries which made motorhomes.

Although not as famous at the trailer used by Lucy & Desi, there was a Kenskill featured in an early nuclear attack movie, Panic In The Year Zero, directed by and starring Ray Milland. It was initially released as “End Of The World” but is still available on Amazon as “ Panic In The Year Zero. ”

In the special JEEP issue of Cool Tears Magazine, we featured the epic generational story of the Shank family. The first paragraph read like this:

In 1949, after reading about the roadless Southwest in National Geographic magazine, my folks took their first trip to the area in a Buick convertible. After being endlessly stuck in the sandy dirt roads, they bought a used red 1946 CJ-2A Jeep in 1950. Since they needed more room for supplies on the extensive backcountry trips, they bought a 1947 Kenskill teardrop trailer in 1952.

Vintage 1966 Kenskill Travel Trailer // RV Tour

May 31, 2019

I don’t remember 1966 but I have learned that a lot of things happened that year that completely affect all of the things I do remember and know today.

Here in Canada, the Canada Pension Plan was introduced and has been helping our seniors with some guaranteed income after retirement ever since. I only hope there is some left for us.

England won the World Cup and shared mini skirts with everyone and the US was watching Star Trek while they were in a space race with Russia.

The average American income was $6900/yr and a car to pull an RV cost $2650 with gas costing .39 cents/gal. People were full of angst, due to the Vietnam War and the every growing Race Riots and the idea of owning a Kenskill Travel Trailer that could take you away to isolation and peace and quiet while carrying all of the comforts of home with you must have really sounded like an awesome idea.

The Kenskill was a beaut! From the chrome aluminum siding and white walled tires to the trendy and now unique robin egg blue appliances, it was a home on wheels.

It slept 4 and had a full dry bath and kitchen. I could just imagine a family enjoying some much needed time away at the lake.

I am soooo thankful that there are folks out there that have taken it upon themselves to preserve this kind of history for the rest of us to enjoy. That is exactly what the crew and Jack Seismore’s Traveland RV Museum have done and my hat is off to them.

If you remember the Kenskill, maybe you had one or knew someone who did, I’d love to hear about it in the comments. Also don’t forget to join us here and SUBSCRIBE on youtube so we can share more with you.

It’s really nice to look back at the old trailers. How nicely they were constructed and beautiful they were.

I totally agree. Any of us that spent time in an RV waaaay back probably has some great memories. For me, that time as a kid in an RV started a love affair that I have never been able to shake. I love the new RVs because they make me dream of future possibilities and places I want to go and see but I love the old RVs because they take me back to memories of adventures and places I have seen and how much I loved those journeys.

The news was announced by CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach at a Deadline-moderated panel at the Banff World Media Festival.

Hollywood Squares  involves two contestants who play tic-tac-toe to win money and prizes. The “board” for the game is a vertical stack of open-faced cubes, each occupied by a celebrity seated at a desk and facing the contestants. The celebrities are asked questions, and the contestants judge the legitimacy of their answers to win the game.

Hollywood Squares  is produced by Jesse Collins for Jesse Collins Entertainment and Drew Barrymore for Flower Films.

The original show aired on NBC in the 1960s. The series piloted in 1965 and debuted in its entirety on the same network in 1966.
