Weezer Cruise I

The first Weezer Cruise was first announced on July 12 , 2011 along with the full list of performers planned to appear. [1] [2] While Gene Ween and Dave Dreiwitz were originally announced as performers, they both had to cancel for undisclosed reasons. [3] Weezer performed three shows, the first being outside on the deck of the ship as it set sail and the other two Pinkerton shows taking place in the Palladium Lounge indoors. The cruise marks the first time the song Tragic Girl was ever played live, as well as the first time since the tribute show in 1997 that Mykel and Carli had been performed.

Weezer played alongside special guests Dinosaur Jr., as well as Sebadoh, Wavves , The Antlers, Yuck, Free Energy, Boom Bip, J Mascis (solo acoustic), Lou Barlow, Keepaway, Ozma , The Nervous Wreckords, The Knocks, Sleeper Agent and Yacht Rock Revue.

Some of the questions asked included: his songwriting method, Songs from the Black Hole, the time period around Pinkerton, and what is next for Weezer. A particularly amusing moment was when a fan asked what it was like to work with the Muppets, to which Rivers replied regarding the puppeteers, "You don't even focus on the human being at all, it's like he's not there! It's like Kermit is real. That was surprising to all of us." [ citation needed ]

Full Schedule

Below is the full Weezer Cruise Schedule.

Weezer Cruise II

A second Weezer cruise set sail February 13-17, 2014 from Florida to the Bahamas via Rose Tours aboard the Carnival Fascination. It featured similar shows and events.

One major difference was the island show in Nassau, The Bahamas. The song Back to the Shack , the first single to their (at the time) forthcoming record, Everything Will Be Alright in the End was debuted live on the island. Another big event was the 20th Birthday party for Weezer featuring a cake along with Rivers in a wig as a throwback to the old-school bowl cut he used to sport around 1994.

Weezer Cruise III

A third Weezer concert has not materialized, despite being mentioned by the band in the press [ citation needed ] . Sheezer , a Canadian all-female Weezer cover band, has been offered a slot on for a future Cruise.

The Weezer cruise ship

All aboard the Weezer cruise: an extensive report

One of the things I love about a destination festival is that it takes you away from your everyday life. And a music cruise takes the destination festival to a whole new level. When I grew up, it seemed that a cruise was something you did when you retired. The sort of trip you went on when you were afraid to fly or when you'd decided pajama jeans were the best clothing option. I knew at some point cruises had mutated into family vacations, or moving spring breaks with drunken sexual shenanigans, but nothing could prepare me for the awesomeness of the Weezer Cruise.

The cruise departed from Miami for a four-night jaunt to Cozumel and back. It featured Weezer, Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr , the Antlers, Yuck, Free Energy and others. As well as music, there were activities and theme nights: ugly sweaters, 80s prom, and moustaches. You could try beer tasting with Boom Bip or watch the belly flop contest judged by the Antlers, attend a Q&A with Weezer, or do yoga with Star of Ozma.

Weezer are fortunate to have a wide audience demographic. Cruises are expensive and many people can't get work off in January, but despite this there was an incredibly diverse audience. There were people from Europe, Asia, Australia and North, Central and South America, and a British couple on their honeymoon. Those are just the people I met. What everyone had in common was a love of the band and a willingness to declare this loudly. I suspect this hardcore fanbase inspired the band's decision to play Pinkerton in its entirety. This 1996 album seems to be closest to the heart of the band.

Creative enthusiasm was treasured. I thought I'd see a lot of band T-shirts, but instead I saw people who made their own Weezer capes, shirts, moustaches, sweaters, flags, fingernails and custom hats. Best of all were guys from Mexico who made Weezer futbol jerseys with pirate nicknames such as "Jacques Cos-Teo" – fitting as we were in the Caribbean. The guys gave each Weezer member his own monogrammed jersey. This was a group of people that had Raditude.

My eight favourite things from the Weezer cruise

Watching Weezer play as the ship departs

As the ship set sail from Miami, Weezer did a "so many hits it hurts" set on the open-air deck with the ocean as the backdrop. Opening with Hash Pipe, a track I used to play before classes to get ready to give a lecture, it was the first chance people had to see the scope of their new music family. It set the tone for the rest of the trip as singer Rivers Cuomo leapt off stage to meander through the crowd while singing, to the top of the giant water slide presiding over the ship, obliterating the distinction between performer and audience. Throughout the trip, bands mixed with audience members. There was a total eradication of the notion of VIP, with perhaps the exception of whether you ended up with a room that had window or not. Once outside your cabin, you could end up having dinner with your favourite drummer or just as wonderful, take a day trip to the Mayan ruins of Tulum with Brian Bell, go snorkelling at a tropical paradise with Rivers, or dance until dawn with Lou Barlow. As the trip progressed, people became more confident and had the chance to tell the artists they loved how their music had affected them, a joy to both musician and fan alike. As Rivers stood atop the slide triumphantly with arms aloft wearing a captain's hat, it felt like a moment of communal success for everyone aboard.

Dressing up for an 80s prom night

On the Saturday night, there was an 80s-themed prom night. Most people took their cues from John Hughes films. Probably because a lot of them weren't alive during the 80s and others, like a couple of women from Norway, didn't have proms to begin with. This was their chance to participate in an American fantasy. The 80s costumes did not disappoint. There was taffeta and neon, thrillers and spandex. There were even the video vixens from Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love. Each outfit was more fabulous than the next: the men in pastel Miami Vice suits and ill-fitting florid tuxedos and the women in sparkly, laced monstrosities. Rivers appeared at the disco with the trip's sartorial motif of the captain's hat to have a twirl around the room. This was the prom you always wished for because people genuinely liked each other. There were no haters. It made everyone feel like royalty. I'm sure being able to legally drink alcohol helped.

It's the Lou Barlow traveling circus!

Lou Barlow played sets with Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh and on on his own. It made for seven shows in four days. He came onboard early with Sebadoh, complaining he was resentful of his other band Dinosaur Jr because they wouldn't have to wait to get into their rooms. The first night he went from playing on the open Lido deck to the large amphitheater on the lower deck. On Friday he played the Criterion Lounge where his witty and self-deprecating between-song banter gave them the intimacy of their original conceptions. The set culminated with him doing the hit single Natural One embedded in a Bill Callahan song leading into the song Day Kitty which was sweetly dedicated to his wife. It resulted in a standing ovation. While I liked the quiet intimacy of the one-man show, others preferred the epic volume of Dinosaur Jr as the ship pulled out of Cozumel to the appalled looks from passengers on the nearby luxury liner. Sebadoh did the finale performance in the Palladium hall only to find the bass guitar had been mixed in with the Dino gear so bassist Jason had to go searching for it on another deck.

Weezer play at the Weezer cruise

Realising it's not possible to overdose on Weezer

Not only did you get to see the band play the Lido deck and two shows at the Palladium theater, there were loads of other band-themed events such as a Weezer game show, Weezer trivia, Weezer karaoke, a vow renewal overseen by "reverend" Scott, Rivers reading from the Pinkerton Diaries, and a fan-led Q&A session that produced fun, flirty and interesting questions. There were Weezer bracelets and tote bags in your room. Weezer temporary tattoos were available on deck (although a few people decided to make their cruise tattoos permanent ), Weezer napkins with your drinks and, if you wanted, special Weezer cruise merchandise. I couldn't resist the embarkation photo with the cruise logo.

Cruises are sexy

There are some distinct stereotypes about cruises and these were definitely in play. There was a sexually charged atmosphere somewhere between summer camp and spring break. Once at sea, the pools, slides and Jacuzzis were filled with salt water and scantily clad men and women. Some people had rather robust shenanigans like what happened in row six during the Dinosaur Jr set, while others were content with sweet fumbling in corridors. It was nice to see how many Weezer fans have best friends of the opposite sex. There was one singles' party where people competed for the best pick-up line. I won't divulge the winner, but I'm surprised no one used "So you look like a Weezer fan …" for the prize.

As a cruise novice, I appreciated you didn't need to drive home; the room prepared with a towel in the shape of a different animal every night, and the non-stop buffet where you could take your food anywhere you liked. There were tropical concoctions in themed containers. I just had to get a margarita in a smiling coconut, which is now sitting in a place of hhonour in my office. I ate pizza at 4am just because there was a pizza available then.

Watching the yacht-rock revival unfold

Would it be a cruise without yacht rock? The company that promoted the Weezer cruise is SixthMan, based in Atlanta, Georgia, and they have an ace up their sleeves, local band Yacht Rock Revival. This would traditionally be called a covers band, but as everyone is up in arms about authenticity, I think there needs to be a reconsideration of how we think about the performance of "other written" music. In jazz, they don't call other written music "covers" they call them "standards". With their coordinated outfits, visual flair and a distinct repertoire, Yacht Rock Revival are a talented band. In late-70s polyester and a devotion to all synthetic fabrics, they played two sets that included Hall and Oates, Dan Hartman, Steely Dan and the Bee Gees. If you had any doubt you were made for dancing, Yacht Rock would assure you that you are.

Who's up for a day trip?

You'd think after two days of radio silence, you'd want to reconnect: check your emails or at least tweet about your amazing adventures, but instead people threw themselves headlong into the perilous quest of the local excursion. It appears in Cozumel they have made the wise decision to make nearly all excursions worthwhile. My best friend and I had been invited to Playa del Carmen for parasailing or to go on a boat to a sand bar in the middle of the sea where you could eat guacamole. We chose the scoot-coupe, a cross between a scooter and a car with three wheels and, in our case, no alignment. It was so bad the others in our group decided either we were drunk or that I must have been the wife of my friend and he was taking revenge on me for some misdeed in our marriage. The trip circled the island with two scenic stops and a drive through town. The waters of the Caribbean are warm and salty, perfect for anything aquatic, and walking on the beaches reminded you that you were on vacation. Halfway around the island, we helped with the final death rattles of our scoot by hitting a dirt patch and got to drive a jeep the rest of the way. The excursions were another chance to meet people from the cruise. The driver was a girl from Oklahoma who I decided to go snorkelling with afterwards. She had come on her own and made new friends every step of the way.

There was a cannonball contest!

On Friday afternoon, there was a Cannonball contest. Sebadoh were judging it. They came up with specific criteria to assess performance including factors such as water displacement, splash height and technique. People loved when contestants did a reveal like whipping off his towel or checking wind resistance before the plunge. This is not the sort of thing I've seen much of before and soon some friends from Mexico City joined us. Actually, until this moment they had been virtual friends. One of them, Santiago had sent me a question about guest lists for my column in the Guardian . It resulted in me trying to get him on guest lists in Mexico City. With all smartphones turned off, we used the old-fashioned way of connecting: calling rooms, getting the wrong person in the wrong language to set up the meeting at the cannonball contest. Yet it worked. I found out that because "professor" in Spanish is masculine, for months Santiago and all his friends thought I was a guy. They were happy to find out my only drinks of choice are Diet Coke and tequila (not together). We talked Weezer and other festivals and bands from Mexico. Santiago can't go to Coachella this year and he later justified it by saying it was because it lacks the cannonball contest. He even wrote to me asking: "Is it still cool to go to Coachella if it doesn't have a cannonball contest?" I asked my best friend once we were home why was the cannonball contest great. He said: "Cannonball contests are terrible. They are always terrible." I was shocked and asked: "Then why did I like it so much." He answered: "It's because we met Santiago at the Cannonball contest. That is what is great about the Weezer cruise. It's about the people you take away from it."

Weezer cruise: four-day floating music festival set to depart miami next year.

Here’s an idea for when the weather gets cold in mid-January in San Diego: fly to Miami, board a cruise ship, and take a four-day trip to Cozumel, Mexico and back.

weezer cruise ship

On Jan. 19, the first-ever Weezer cruise will set sail from Miami for a four-day adventure aboard the ship Carnival Destiny.  The ship will travel to Cozumel and dock for a day before returning back to Miami on Jan. 23.

Weezer is set to perform on the pool deck as the ship departs.  They will then perform again at the ship’s indoor theater some time during the trip.

Joining Weezer for this floating music festival are 15 other bands including Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, Gene Ween, Yuck, Wavves, the Antlers and Free Energy as well as others.

The bands will perform on four stages that will be located at various spots around the ship as well as the indoor theater so that audiences can catch any or all of the acts day and night throughout the entire trip.

Weezer will also take part in a Q&A session as well as take pictures with fans on the pool deck during the cruise.

weezer cruise ship

Weezer released its ninth studio album, “Hurley ,” last September.  The record entered the Billboard 200 at No. 6, making it the sixth consecutive album released by the band to debut in the Billboard Top 10.  Their self-titled, debut album, otherwise known as “The Blue Album,” was released in 1994 and is currently at triple-platinum status, making it the most popular Weezer album to date.

Their on-board performances will likely include tunes from the new album, but there is no doubt that fans will also be treated to a host of other classic Weezer tracks including “Say It Ain’t So,” “Holiday,” “Buddy Holly” and “Undone-The Sweater Song.”

Tickets for the event go on-sale to the general public on Aug.t 3.  Pre-sale tickets are available for fans that register with the theme cruise production company Sixthman before July 24.  Pre-sale tickets will provide the opportunity of first choice for cabins as well as seating for the concerts taking place in the theater.

Ticket prices start at $799 per person for a double cabin or four people can travel together for only $599 a person.

All Aboard the Weezer Cruise: One Fan's Journey 'Across the Sea'

As a Chicagoan, January is generally one of the most miserable times of the year. It’s the month where I understand what Alaskans must go through, living weeks on end without seeing the sun.

This year I said no. This year, I took a stand. Or rather, a swim. This year, I set out on an adventure to make memories across the sea on an island in the sun; the stuff usually found only in dreams. I’m punning, of course, about the Weezer Cruise.

'Broadway Bares' Announces 2024 Vegas-Themed 'Hit the Strip' Burlesque Benefit

Weezer Talks Cruise, New Record, Schooling Dinosaur Jr.

For the uninitiated, the Weezer Cruise (Jan. 19-23) was a five-day, four-night floating music festival hosted by — you guessed it — Weezer. Organized by Atlanta-based events company Sixthman, the journey from Miami to Cozumel, Mexico and back featured great bands like Dinosaur Jr. , Sebadoh , Wavves , Ozma , Nervous Wreckords, Sleeper Agent and more.

There are few things that instill more confidence in impending cruise vacation plans than watching non-stop coverage of a recent cruise run aground, but fate’s warnings be damned, my cabinmates and I boarded our “Destiny” in Miami and prepared for the trip of a lifetime. Shortly after we left port, every passenger piled on the Lido deck to watch the Weezer send-off show. Kicking the jams off with “Hash Pipe” (and a surprisingly talented Pat, drummer, on guitar), the =W= kept the hits coming with radio favorites like “Perfect Situation,” “Beverly Hills” and “Pork & Beans.” Highlights included a wandering Rivers Cuomo during “Dope Nose,” climbing atop the completely dry waterslide, directing the crowd with the mic like a maestro conductor. After rounding out the set with an incredible cover of Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android” and a few more radio hits, the band took a short break before busting out the “Blue Album” in its entirety.

Trending on Billboard

Instantly, I was transported back 18 years to stealing my brother’s cassette tape with the nerdy group of four looking back from the plain blue background. The revelation that I was enjoying the entire “Blue Album,” performed by Weezer, on a boat, leaving Miami, wearing nothing but red diving shorts in the middle of January was almost too much to bear. And this was just the beginning.

Day Two: The Naked Man

Perhaps unsurprisingly, we were almost prevented from entering to take our photo with the band as a result of our attire. Picture three out-of-shape, pasty-skinned white men in coordinated red, white and blue diving shorts that fit too tight and perhaps you can see the staff’s hesitation. Having overcome the prudish Carnival Cruise staff, we made our way through the line (despite multiple requests for pics) and into the photo area. The reactions of each band member were classic, and forever frozen in time thanks to our carefully staged “Naked Photo.” Oh yes, we’d left an impression.

As the night progressed, we found ourselves back on the Lido Deck for Wavves’ first set of the cruise. The California grunge-pop group punctuated their tight and fuzz-filled set with a seemingly ceaseless quest for the mysterious “Willers,” the man responsible for helping (read: carrying) vocalist Nathan Williams back to his room the night before. Apparently, the good samaritan left a note with his name, Twitter handle and a heartfelt expression that Nathan’s cat bears a striking resemblance to his own. Finally, two songs before the end of the set, the elusive Willers emerged, eliciting a diving, climbing and sprinting hug from Nathan as a show of his appreciation. After having our proverbial asses handed to us sonically, it was time to witness our second Weezer show of the cruise.

Similar to the grand send-off, the second show was divided into two sets: B-sides and “Pinkerton.” The energy in the room was palpable as the band played “Mykel and Carli,” the memorial song for two of Weezer’s biggest fans, for the first time live in 15 years. Watching Rivers clamor into the audience, belting out songs that at one point caused so much pain, now bathing in the love of the devoted family that Weezer has built over the past 20 years is something I won’t soon forget.

Day Three: Cozumel, ’80s Night and a Happy New Year

After a nap on the boat that would make Rip Van Winkle blush, we found ourselves in what was either the mid-’80s or the only theme-night for which the cruise participants actually spent time and effort preparing for. As we made our way into the 1980s Prom, we noticed Pat hanging out casually toward the back, sipping on a Lagunitas IPA, which was not being served aboard the ship. “I snuck them on,” he told us with a sheepish grin. Apparently, if you’re the headlining band and the main reason why the cruise exists, you somehow get special privileges. I know. Unfair. Once he learned we were a step above Bud Light-swilling schleps, he gave a whole-hearted endorsement of Pliny the Elder Double IPA. I’m looking forward to taking him up on the recommendation.

My mother always told me that nothing good happens after 2:00 a.m. Erroneous. Unless of course by “nothing good” she actually meant “multiple human pyramids in the middle of a casino floor, countless New Year countdowns followed by the most heartfelt hugs and ‘congratulations’ you could imagine, earning world championship belts, and making friends with high-caliber individuals from all across the world.” Our reward for drinking through the night was to greet a brilliant orange sunrise cresting over the Gulf of Mexico and what must be the most inappropriate breakfast of my adult life. I could not think of a better way to begin our last full day on the boat.

Day 4: Our Multi-national Friends

I’m not sure if you’ve ever been crammed into a Carnival Cruise Line hot tub with quite literally 30 foreigners while Weezer takes the stage to answer questions from their most devoted fans and a Lido deck packed to capacity. Come to think of it, you probably haven’t. Needless to say, it was a bit of an ordeal what with the crowd surfing, stage diving and spontaneous countdowns to the New Year (hate to burst your bubble, but we’re about three weeks late). Thankfully, our din was successfully quieted by the Q&A session. The panel-style presentation was peppered with the band’s musical tastes (Pat is currently listening exclusively to female singers like “Lana Del Mar,” his words), favorite music video (“you couldn’t not smile on the set of ‘Buddy Holly’,” Brian told the crowd), and the occasional fan hug.

As one might expect, the rest of the evening began to blur together in a haze of Sleeper Agent’s and Free Energy’s Casino shows, all-night dance parties, good decisions, great decisions, bad decisions, worse decisions. When the “true dregs of the late night party scene” as Dayn, Wavves’ delightful tour manager had so eloquently phrased it the night before, became more the norm than the exception, when the glitter and shimmer of the slot machines lost their luster, and watching band members attempt to steal away with an Olsen-twin lookalike without alerting her very-present boyfriend became banal, we hit the hay for the last time on our ship, appropriately named “Destiny.”

So pardon me if I feel that this is such a pity — my best friends and I leaving what seemed a perfect situation, left with nothing more than a photograph or two and some memories. Say it ain’t so, friends, for I don’t want to let you go. (If you’re wondering if I want you to) I want you to be rolling your eyes at this point.

And you probably are. Nothing us Weezer fans haven’t seen before.

Rock band Weezer to headline another music cruise

The band Weezer will lead a music cruise in February 2014.

Weezer fans, your ship has come in -- again.

The Grammy Award-winning alternative rock band on Monday announced it would take its act to the high seas for a second time in February 2014 on a Carnival cruise ship.

The Weezer Cruise, as it'll once again be called, will be a four-night musical extravaganza featuring daily performances by Weezer and other bands.

Coming two years after the first Weezer cruise, the new voyage will kick off Feb. 13, 2014 on the 2,052-passenger Carnival Fascination sailing out of Jacksonville, Fla. The Bahamas voyage will include stops in Freeport and Nassau.

Organized by cruise company Rose Tours, the music festival-at-sea will feature three performances by Weezer, including a beach concert on a private island.

Rose Tours says participants also will get a chance to see Weezer off-stage during a fan Q&A session; an interactive Weezer game show; and a photo session with the band. There also will be evening theme nights and other activities.

Fares for the voyage start at $599 per person. Cabins will be available to attendees of the first Weezer cruise starting on March 20 at 12 noon ET, and any remaining cabins will go on sale to the general public the next day.

The Weezer Cruise Is Back

By Larry Fitzmaurice

Image may contain Rivers Cuomo Human and Person

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...

Two years after  Weezer set sail on the inaugural Weezer Cruise , Rivers Cuomo and co. are set to take to the ocean again for another trip on the high seas. The trip takes place February 13-17, 2014, and will travel from Jacksonville, Fla. to the Bahamas. Weezer will perform three sets during the trip, which will include a "Beach Concert With Weezer" on the band's own "private island". So, yes, cue the "Island in the Sun" jokes, again, because this time they actually make more sense.

Other acts scheduled to perform will be announced soon. Weezer will also participate in photo sessions, a "special fan Q&A," and "an interactive Weezer Game Show," according to a press release.

Watch a trailer for the cruise below, which includes drummer Patrick Wilson explaining when tickets go on sale with all the conviction of a man who just got out of bed (seriously, skip to 1:02-- guy does not exactly look thrilled to be there).

Also of note: the cruise ship horns in the beginning of the trailer kind of sound like the score to Inception . So, watch the trailer for Inception below, too. Good movie.

Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, Gene Ween, Yuck, Antlers Aboard Inaugural Weezer Cruise

Grammy® Award-winning artist Weezer announces The Weezer Cruise. Taking to the ocean January 19-23, 2012, The Weezer Cruise is a music festival-at-sea curated by Weezer on the Carnival Destiny sailing from Miami to the island of Cozumel, off the coast of Mexico.    Along with Weezer and 2,500 passengers, The Weezer Cruise will feature fifteen bands performing shows around the ship through the day and night, festival-style. Weezer will perform on the pool deck as the ship pulls out and then again in the indoor main theater.   In addition to Weezer, there will be performances from Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, Gene Ween and Dave Dreiwitz, Wavves, The Antlers, Yuck, Free Energy, Boom Bip, J. Mascis, Lou Barlow, Keepaway, Ozma, The Nervous Wreckords, The Knocks, Sleeper Agent, and Yacht Rock Review.   Between the many shows taking place on the four stages around the ship, fans will participate in games and activities, swim in the ship’s pool, play a few rounds of bingo, or order from the 24-hour room service menu. After a day-and-a-half at sea, guests can spend their Saturday soaking up the sun on Cozumel’s beaches before returning to the Caribbean for more rock and roll.   For this inaugural experience, Weezer has partnered with the industry leader in theme cruises, Sixthman. Prices start at $799 per person for double cabins, or four people can sail together for just $599 per person. Fans can sign up for the pre-sale and watch a video announcement from the band at www.theweezercruise.com. Sixthman will open pre-sale bookings on July 21 and cabins will go on sale to the general public on August 3.

Magical Mystery Tours

I gave you a warning a few months ago that I was about to embark on the Weezer Cruise .  I’m a little late with the review, but the cruise was way too much fun to not tell you about it.

It was also my first cruise!  Thankfully, Stephanie is more of a cruising expert than I am, but I felt like I was missing out on a big area of travel.  I’m still far from an expert, but also wanted to share my initial thoughts on cruises.

My vacation buddy Allison gave a great day-by-day breakdown of the cruise on her blog (see here , here , here , and here ), so I won’t get into too many details, but wanted to give you my general impressions of going on a cruise, and, more specifically, going on a music cruise.

Here are my highlights of going on a music cruise:

  • Definitely one of the most memorable musical experiences I’ve had.  I’ve loved Weezer since the mid-90’s and seen them numerous times, but on the cruise we saw them play all their biggest hits and a lot of their rare B-sides in two different venues (once on the deck and once in the ship’s theater).  Everyone there was a huge fan, which made it that much more fun.

Why not perform from the water slide?

Ozma show on the deck.

  • Access to the bands was great!  We had our picture taken with Weezer, and got to chat with a few members of Weezer while in line for food or just wandering around the ship.  During the first few days we’d recognize band members and sort of whisper among ourselves, but we got used to saying hi to them, chatting, and generally getting to hear that they were having as much fun as we were.  I missed out on this, but Allison even ended up on a snorkeling tour with Rivers Cuomo, the lead singer of Weezer!

Meeting Pat Wilson from Weezer during shuffleboard.

Meeting Jose Galvez from Ozma!

  • Activities.  The cruise was on a Carnival ship, but the bands and activities were run by Sixthman , a whole company dedicated to music cruises.  They did a great job catering the activities toward a Weezer loving audience.  We had ugly sweater night, mustache night, Weezer trivia, an 80’s Prom Night, a cocktail making contest, and shuffleboard (which Allison and I were atrocious at…any shuffleboard aficionados please leave tips in the comments!)  We also both got picked to be part of a Q&A session with Weezer.  I never really understood cruise activities and the notion of packing a fancy dress to do formal night on a boat, but these activities were all fun and definitely designed for this cruising audience.

Rocking the ugly sweater.

Practicing shuffleboard (not that it helped…)

The Weezer Q&A.

Weezer trivia with Daniel from Ozma.

So now that we’ve covered why the Weezer cruise was great, what about cruising in general?

Let’s do the pros first:

  • It was easy.  Anyone who’s planned a vacation with friends knows how tricky planning can get.  With this, we just decided that we both wanted to go, picked what sort of room we wanted (note: we went with a pretty basic room and were pleasantly surprised by its size), and off we went.  Once we were there, we could easily split up and meet up later.  I usually love picking through the options and finding the best of everything there is to see and do in a place, but for once it was really nice not to think about those things!
  • It was relaxing.  I’m awful at relaxing on vacations.  It seems wrong to sleep in or nap when there are new things to see and do.   This was by far the most relaxing vacation I’ve had.
  • All-Inclusive.  It was really nice to have everything included.  It was a little weird in the beginning to comprehend that there were pizzas and chicken fingers available 24/7 and we never had to pay for them, but not having to think about how much you were spending on each meal was a nice change.  (Note: we did have to pay for sodas and alcohol.  People complained about the prices, but honestly, they were no worse than what I regularly pay in DC for drinks.)

Ok, so to round out the cruise review, I think there’s some notable cons, too:

  • Docking locations.  We stopped in Cozumel.  Maybe Cozumel’s great, but where we stopped was just a very touristy port area with souvenir shops and Mexican food.  Granted, I did have the best mango margarita ever, but the stop didn’t add much to the trip.  Maybe doing an Alaskan or European cruise would offer more in terms of ports, but I wasn’t impressed.
  • Food.  Everyone talks about gaining weight on cruises, so I was a little worried.  The food was adequate, there was some notable chocolate cake, but overeating wasn’t a worry.  Everything was very “meat and potatoes” and not too exciting.  Maybe other cruise lines are different, but this was pretty blah.
  • Not “going somewhere.” To me, most vacations are about seeing somewhere new.  On this trip, it was fun to check out a cruise boat, but there wasn’t new local cuisine to try, sites to see, or people to learn from.  I was actually really curious about the people who worked on the boat—where do they live, how long are they on the boat, how did they get into this?  Yet that still isn’t the same as going somewhere.

I love Weezer more than ever, and am certainly glad I got to check out a cruise, though probably need to stick to some dry land vacations before signing up for another one!

The Weezer Cruise: Day Two

weezer cruise ship

have a new favourite band, and they might just be the dorkiest band on the Weezer Cruise. Why? They have done the band-on-a-cruise-ship thing before. The bad news? Once was with Kid Rock. But when it comes to the Yacht Rock Revue (yes, that is really their name) this is forgiveable.

We stumbled across these guys while playing mini-golf on the roof of the ship. They were performing on the deck and suddenly everyone – those in the hot tubs included – was dancing. So down we went to check it out mid-Hall and Oates. They were covering hilarious yacht-rock ranging from Hall and Oates to Steely Dan. And they were doing it in head-to-toe polyester. No apologies.  It was no irony and all awesome.

So awesome, in fact, that my pal Anna was inspired to start a conga line with the shirtless bachelor party next to us who had been downing suspicious pink and fizzy shots.

After the show and over many glasses of lemonade, I learned the story of the Yacht Rock Revue. These guys met in Atlanta and formed as a joke (“let’s get a bar residency and cover grocery store music!”) But the joke became more popular than any of their independent bands and these guys opted to roll with it. Mark, a lovely boy from my favourite mid-western town of Ann Arbor sat with me as we rapped over Detroit record stores, how to sneak whiskey onto a cruise ship, and some the disturbing things he saw on that Kid Rock cruise.

While these guys mostly play covers, they are real musicians who come from really interesting places. They care about funk and northern soul, and refused to take themselves seriously.  They aren’t too cool to dance in tight white pants.  And they won’t be a cover band for long.

The original material is strong and they have acknowledged that what they are doing is a means to an end. They acknowledge and embrace the fact that the music world of huge advances and major labels of their youth no longer exists. In a funny twist, it appears that the bar band that broke up their “serious” bands but paid the bills might now be just the ticket they need to pay for Yacht Rock’s first record and help to put them on the map.

So pay close attention, and let’s bring them up to Canada. We need some of this southern fun in Toronto. I sincerely urge you all to check them out at www.pleaserock.com and support unpretentious music!

Besides, look at them.  What’s not to love?

Tonight is Weezer show 2/3 – cover to cover Pinkerton and some b-sides. Rumour has it that Rivers is starting to get pretty creeped out. After seeing a very intoxicated girl make a rather aggressive and sloppy attempt at propositioning Mr. Bell this afternoon, I can’t blame him.

But first, I venture to the Weezer Cruise singles party. I know Alan is laughing because as much as I love and adore nerds, this just screams musician slash computer programmer disaster.

More to come from Mexico tomorrow!

Weezer Announce Caribbean Cruise

By Matthew Perpetua

Matthew Perpetua

Weezer are set to take their rock show to the high seas on January 19-23rd  with their first-ever Weezer Cruise , which will sail from Miami to the island of Cozumel, off the coast of Mexico.

The cruise will essentially be a floating festival featuring performances by Weezer along with sets by alt-rock legends Dinosaur Jr. , Sebadoh and Gene Ween, plus youthful indie rockers Yuck , Wavves , the Antlers and Free Energy. ( Dinosaur Jr. ‘s J. Mascis and Sebadoh’s Lou Barlow will also turn in solo sets.) The bands will perform on four stages located around the ship, with Weezer scheduled to play on the pool deck as the cruise departs and again at the ship’s indoor theater. The band has also committed to taking photos with fans and engaging in a Q&A session.

Along the way, the ship will stop for a day on the beach at Cozumel before the cruise heads back toward Miami. The likelihood that Weezer will take this opportunity to perform their hit “Island in the Sun” on an actual island in the sun is very, very high.

Pre-sale bookings for the Weezer Cruise will begin on July 21st, and cabins will go on sale to the general public on August 3rd. Ticket prices will start at $799 per person for double cabins, and groups of four can travel together for $599 each.

REPORT: Weezer Continued to Play as Cruise Ship Sank

weezer cruise ship

By Mark Roebuck | September 7, 2017

P ACIFIC OCEAN — Details continue to emerge about the sinking of Weezer’s luxury cruise ship earlier this summer, with the latest reports indicating that the alternative rock legends continued to play as their namesake ship sunk.

“They made an announcement during their set that we’d struck something and everyone needed to evacuate,” said survivor Blake Gallows. “Lots of people were panicking, but Rivers just kind of nodded at his band and told them what a pleasure it’d been to play with them. When I got on my emergency rowboat, they were in the middle of that really sick buildup in ‘Only in Dreams.’ As much as I wanted to stick around, the water was already up to my knees.”

Maritime investigators believe the cruise ship struck an iceberg, causing many cabins on the starboard side to rapidly take on water.

“According to the ship’s manifest, there are only four people still unaccounted for,” said lead investigator Garret Muckley. “It looks like every member of Weezer went down with the vessel. I just hope to the good Lord above they played ‘El Scorcho’ before they went under.”

Lifeboat protocol calls for women and children to be evacuated first, but organizers were quick to point out that neither women nor children were onboard during the disaster.

“If this were 1996, we could’ve expected a lot of women on board, but thankfully Rivers has alienated most of his female fans through overtly creepy lyrics,” said Weezer fan club president Toby Roberts. “Plus, without women on board, it was a lot easier for everyone to let loose without shame. Before the ship capsized, that is.”

In the wake of the latest report, Weezer fans around the world are expressing their gratitude for the band.

“That’s why we love Weezer so much,” said longtime fan Bruce Davies. “No one commits to something like Weezer. Whether it’s that stupid ‘colored album’ bit or finishing their set on a sinking cruise, you can bet Weezer won’t half-ass anything anytime soon. Besides songwriting, anyway.”

Rumors that Rivers Cuomo safely swam to Japan remain unconfirmed.
