After decades Fogerty finally got his publishing rights back
After decades of struggle, the legendary Creedence Clearwater Revival vocalist and guitarist John Fogerty finally got his publishing rights back. The battle started more than 50 years ago when the band signedd to Fantasy Records that was owned by Saul Zaentz.
After he saw the terms of the deal were unfair he tried for years to get out of the contract. In 1980 he relinquished his royalties to the record executive and didn’t received the money for the use of his songs decades.
1985 he was even sued by Zaentz for “self-plagiarism”, because his solo song “The Old Man Down The Road” had similarities with CCR’s classic track “Run Through The Jungle”. Fogerty won that case in court.
Now, in 2023 the musician announced that he bought back the rights to his own songs.

Creedence Clearwater Revival founding members and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Stu Cook and Doug “Cosmo” Clifford have been on quite a ride. Following their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cosmo and Stu launched their Creedence Clearwater Revisited project in 1995 to once again perform live in concert the hit songs — touchstones of a generation.
Since then, the legendary rhythm section has been thrilled by the outpouring of affection for their new band. World tours and a platinum selling album Recollection followed. The astounding response to the band has been driven in part by new generations of fans that, as Cosmo says, “weren’t even born when the music came out.”
It is the rhythm section Doug Clifford’s drums and Stu Cook’s bass that is a hallmark of Creedence Clearwater Revival
While, as udiscovermusic.com recently commented, it is the “rhythm section Doug Clifford’s drums and Stu Cook’s bass that is a hallmark of Creedence Clearwater Revival,” the boys did not take assembling the rest of the new group’s players lightly. “In the beginning Cosmo and I decided that if we could find the musicians that could capture the sound and recreate what the music was about, we’d do it,” recalls Stu.
As fans around the world can attest, Stu and Cosmo found the right players. Lead guitarist Kurt Griffey brings crowds to their feet and the front of the stage with his solos. He has recorded and toured with other notable musicians including members of the Eagles, Foreigner, the Moody Blues, Wings, Lynyrd Skynryd, Santana and Journey. On lead vocal and rhythm guitar is Dan McGuinness . The purity, power and range of Dan’s soaring voice hits right to the heart. Multi-instrumentalist Steve Gunner rounds out the group. As Cosmo puts it, “Gun provides live all the overdubs that were on the records – keyboard, acoustic guitar, percussion, harmonica and the high harmonies.”
In 2013, Classic Rock Revisited critic Jeb Wright wrote about a Creedence Clearwater Revisited concert he attended. “The true test of any concert is how the music makes you feel. On this night, this writer walked away with a wonderful feeling, having just witnessed timeless, historical music, performed to perfection. Creedence Clearwater Revisited not only looks to the past, performing iconic songs, they bring them to the modern day, reminding us all of the true importance of this music.”

John Fogerty new music
Just this year, Fogerty released a jazzy live version of “Joy Of My Life.”
The love song, which originally appeared on Fogerty’s 1997 solo album “Blue Moon Swamp” shows that Fogerty still has his signature pipes intact.
Plus, the extended sax solos don’t hurt either.
You can hear the 6.5-minute track — that also happens to be an ode to his wife, Julie — here .

John Cameron Fogerty is an American musician, songwriter, and guitarist who is best known as the lead singer and lead guitarist for the band Creedence Clearwater Revival.
His first band may never have existed at the beginning of Fogerty's career as John was nearly drafted into the United States Military in 1966, but instead joined an Army Reserve unit. He served at Fort Bragg, Fort Knox, and Fort Lee before being discharged from the Army in July 1967. In the same year, the band changed its name to Creedence Clearwater Revival and John took his brother's place as lead singer for the band.
They enjoyed success as a band following the release of their self titled debut in 1968 which featured their first hit single 'Susie Q'. The following releases all charted within the top 20 of the US Billboard album charts with the 1969 'Green Water' topping the chart, it is now certified three times platinum selling. CCR hold the record for having five number two singles on the US Billboard charts but never achieving a number one, this includes songs such as 'Proud Mary' and 'Bad Moon Rising'.
After the demise of CCR Fogerty began a solo career, originally under the name The Blue Ridge Rangers for his 1973 LP debut. He began with quite a country & western sound before moving towards more traditional rock & roll on early singles such as 'Comin' Down The Road'. With his first album releases he struggled to match the success he had achieved with CCR, however his first comeback album 'Centerfield' which was released through Warner Bros managed to top the US charts once again. After this his albums' chartings progressively declined before the 2013 LP 'Wrote A Song For Everyone' managed to reappear in the top 5. Fogerty is currently listed on Rolling Stone magazine's list of 100 Greatest Guitarists at number 40 and the list of 100 Greatest Singers at number 72.
Live reviews
John Fogerty is a wholesome genuine artist that plays his heart an soul out for his fans an people who are lucky enough to get a chance to see this living legend. I have listen to John Fogerty since I was knee high to a grasshopper. My older brother listened to CCR lead by John Fogerty so that's how I got my first intro to this great artist.
All my life I listened to the foot stomping hand clapping driving sounds of music that made my heart pound an make me wanna dance. I'm 57 now an I know 10 year old kids that listen to John. I feel so very fortunate I got a chance to meet John Fogerty. What an adventure what a thrill of a lifetime for me to come face to face an meet the man that's music rocked the world. He's a down to earth man that wants nothing more than to create an play great forever classicals. I had seen John Fogerty 5 times.
No one show was the same as the last as he is always changing always evolving. The common thread of each show is Johns desire to entertain to make sure the audience got more than their money's worth so we all went home feeling uplifted an thrilled about the evening.
The show in Dawson Creek was another exciting heart pounding night. It's amazing just looking around seeing most fans myself included singing along with John on all his songs. John showed us his amazing musical talents playing at least a dozen different sounding guitars. John also dazzled the crowd with some amazing piano playing he is almost limitless with his talents. The show was awesome it had everything lights, fog, fire, video clips and plastic sixties flowers and paper confetti raining down all over the crowd.
John had a small stage set at the back of the arena where he snuck threw the crowd an appeared out of nowhere an gave the people sitting far far away a very close up an amazing show. It goes to show you John wants everyone to enjoy themselves.
I can say in all honesty the whole crowd went home buzzing an thrilled about the show. John just keeps on chooglin. Needless to say I'll be going back to see an hear John again an would highly recommend it to anyone. Sincerely Kevin Luffman

I was really thrilled to get to see John Fogerty. I was a huge Creedence Clearwater Revival fan growing up and know a lot of their songs by heart. I also can play many of them on the guitar. This show was in a small place and it was very quaint. He had a very small band and most of what he played was acoustic. The band was great but he was clearly the highlight.
He also did some of his famous solo tunes that were such big hits in the 1980’s. He did the song “Center Field” which took me back to my childhood and watching the video for that song that had all of the baseball bloopers in it. The show was not that long but it was very good.
The great thing was that he did not shy away from the CCR songs, like "Bad Moon Rising" and "Fortunate Son" that most people wanted to hear. He brought the house down with those famous songs. His voice is still as great as was when he was much younger. He also had such good energy and the audience did as well. It was really just a fun experience and one that I would strongly recommend to anyone. I also would advise any old CCR fans to attend this.
We attended the John Fogerty concert in beautiful Penticton BC Canada. We grew up listening to John's music and CCR but never had the opportunity to see one of his shows. When this concert was announced we grabbed tickets the first day, so we had good seats to watch the band play. It was great to see him perform all his classic songs.
The bands performance was good and the music is timeless. All our friends who saw the show enjoyed it as well. His guitar picking is amazing as well as his guitar collection. The plaid blue guitar that matches his plaid blue shirt is truly a work of art.
John's voice is one of the most unique voices and his live performance is spot on. It was an opportunity of a life time and we are great full to have attended.
We will gladly go again if the opportunity arises.
My husband is a huge John Fogerty fan , we go see him every time he comes to Canada and got the pleasure to meet him in Las Vegas in January. This was a dream and says John is a very pleasant man to talk to. We are planning to attend John up coming concert again in Vegas in October He literally listens to his music for hours every day the biggest Fogerty fan I believe there is. Lol John you give so much pleasure to so many people. I really don’t think you know what you give to us fans. Thank you Sir
This is my third time seeing him in the last 5 years. My seats this time were perfect. 9th row center orchestra. He started late but it was worth the wait. It was 2 hours of non-stop terrific music. John is such a good guitarist and singer. He is also so pleasant. The rest of the band were all excellent musicians too. They played Credence stuff and some cover songs. By the middle of the show everyone was standing until the end. I can't wait to see him again which is in 3 hours at another venue.
This concert was the best concert I've ever seen! Fogerty really knows how to put on a show! Once he started, he didn't stop. There were barely any lulls in the show, and if there was one it was because he was setting up for another instrument. Once he played Fortunate Son, you thought it was over, but nope! There was still Bad Moon Rising and Proud Mary to play. All in all it was a great concert and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys the Classic Rock genre.
It was my second time, hearing John Fogerty live. It was a joy. Great performer, great talent, great time with my friends. 26 songs throughout CCR greatest hits, Fogerty's solo highlights and last but not the least, some marvelous hidden gems from his long time songbook. To me, hearing John Fogerty is both seeing a legend and - most important - living a legend.
Amazing nonstop music from one song immediately into the next w various guitars used by John including the one he bought as a kid and lost track of it for many years only now to have it in his possession once again! His foot stomping hit after hit was phenomenal especially his jam with his son Shane! Fabulous incredible concert start to finish!
Over 100 minutes of bluesy, soulful rock & roll gained momentum to reach a joyous crescendo where nearly everyone was on their feet enjoying the beat or dancing. If an opportunity to attend this great legend's concert comes along, say "yes"! God bless John Fogerty! -Sheila S., Vancouver, July 2018
My all time favourite singer it has to be said from him and his fantastic band took the stage the place was rocking all the fans were singing to every song we kne all the words as far as I'm concerned it was the best concert I was ever at pure class magic is the word I use to describe the show.

Written by logan phillips on march 14, 2023.
Willie Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival tour will be returning in 2023. But in some exciting news, he will be joined by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss as well as John Fogerty on different dates of the tour.

Fogerty will appear on the last three dates, beginning Aug. 11 in Cleveland, OH. This a big victory for the former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman who after a legal battle that had lasted five decades, recently gained control of the band’s publishing rights.

Creedence Clearwater Revisited Talk Farewell Tour and Ignoring Their Critics
By David Browne
David Browne
In the past few years, a growing number of classic-rock acts have announced farewell tours. The latest twist arrived last week, when Creedence Clearwater Revisited rolled out plans for their final live run, set to wrap up later this year. “We’re calling it ‘The Final Revival,’” says drummer Doug Clifford, who will turn 74 in two weeks. “We’ve got grandchildren and they’re growing like crazy before your eyes. It’s time to change things a bit and make the family the priority.”
Adds bassist Stu Cook, 73, “Frankly, the road is a drag. We love the band, but we’ve had enough of hanging around a hotel room waiting to do our thing. There are far more years behind us than left in front of us.”
The twist, of course, is that Revisited isn’t the original Creedence Clearwater Revival , the hard-driving band powered by the voice, songs and guitar of John Fogerty . Featuring only Cook and Clifford — but not Fogerty nor Fogerty’s late brother, rhythm guitarist Tom — Revisited remains what Cook calls, with a knowing chuckle, “somewhere between a cover band, a tribute band and the real deal.”
These days, it’s become the new normal for heritage bands to tour with replacement (and usually younger) frontmen. Revisited weren’t the first such reconfiguration, but until now, they’ve been one of the most enduring. Launched in 1995, Revisited have now lasted more than five times longer than the original Creedence, which ran from 1968 to 1972. “When we started, we had no idea what was going to happen,” says Clifford. “Or if we were going to be accepted by the fans. We had a five-year plan and nothing else. There was some struggling in there, but we were immediately accepted. You win ’em over one show at a time.”
The thought of reviving the band as Creedence Clearwater Revisited probably began in 1993, when Creedence were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . Cook and Clifford assumed they would be joining Fogerty onstage to reprise a few of their songs, but Cook says they had “no idea” they wouldn’t be playing with him until that night. Instead, Fogerty’s backup band included Bruce Springsteen and Robbie Robertson.

“They BS’d us for months that we were going to play or jam,” says Cook. “That mollified us until Doug went to see what drum set he was playing and a crew guy said, ‘Don’t you know you’re not playing?’ We called John and had a confrontation about the whole thing. That was the sneak-attack part part of it, a little bit like Pearl Harbor.” The two men walked out of the hall as soon as Fogerty and his guests began performing. For his part, Fogerty has said he had issues with his former bandmates by then, including the claim they “sold their voting rights in Creedence” to his nemesis, the late Fantasy Records head Saul Zaentz. “That really betrayed me,” he recently told an interviewer. Cook and Clifford says they “only proxied their voting rights for compilation albums, which did not give the record label a majority, leaving a majority to the balance of CCR to vote and decide.”
Not long after, Cook ended up visiting Clifford at the latter’s home in Tahoe, California, where the two jammed together for the first time in years. Cook insists it was that bond, more than revenge for the Hall of Fame induction, that spurred a Creedence resurrection. “You can only go so far with bass and drums, so we thought, ‘Why don’t we do something — and what would be better than what we already do?’” he says. “It was just an idea that we had to get the hell out of the house. It wasn’t, ‘We’re gonna show him.’ But I understand why people might assume we adopted a bit of that attitude.”
Adds Clifford, “The humiliation done that night was so wrong, and I’ve come to the conclusion that the seeds for this project were planted that night. But also, nobody was playing those songs, including John, when we started this project. People would say, ‘I never got the chance to see you guys.’”
For the first Revisited — the revamped name was suggested by a concert promoter friend of theirs — the band recruited former Cars guitarist Elliot Easton and a new lead singer also named John (Tristao). “John Fogerty is one of the most recognizable rock & roll voices,” says Cook, “and we told the guys when we were auditioning, ‘Don’t try to copy Fogerty. Just sing the songs as they should be sung.’ It’s a delicate balance.”
At a time when fans and promoters alike were wary of any rock reunions without all the principals, Revisited weren’t always greeted warmly. Months went by without work, and only bit by bit did the jobs (including tours of Asia and Europe) start coming. “We took a lot of hits,” says Cook. “People didn’t think we could do this or should do this. Creedence was an underdog, and Revisited was a double underdog. But we knew we could do it. Having the rhythm section makes us feel and sound quite a bit more like the original recordings than anybody else.”
The Biggest Band in America in 2024 Is ... Creedence Clearwater Revival

“We always introduce everyone in the band,” adds Clifford. “The idea was never to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes that it was John onstage. We took strides to make sure that was common knowledge.”
The first of many legal hassles arose soon after, when Fogerty challenged the use of the Revisited name in court in 1996. Fogerty — who himself began playing Creedence songs again onstage in 1997 after not doing so since their breakup — won an injunction, forcing Cook, Clifford and their bandmates to call themselves Cosmo’s Factory, after a Creedence album title. But a court of appeals overturned the decision and allowed Cook and Clifford to use the revamped Creedence name; in exchange for a cut of their touring and merchandising income, Fogerty withdrew his complaint. Cook and Clifford copyrighted the Revisited name and have used it ever since.
Revisited rolled along, even releasing a live album, Recollection , with their versions of the old Creedence songs. (The current lineup includes lead singer Dan McGuinness, lead guitarist Kurt Griffey and multi-instrumentalist Steve Gunner.) The group hit another legal snag in 2014, when Cook, Clifford and Tom Fogerty’s widow sued Fogerty for trademark infringement. By then, Fogerty was doing concerts performing Creedence albums, and advertising them as such, which irked his ex-bandmates. “He could always play the material — anybody can,” says Cook. “But we felt he was appropriating the brand. The billing he was using was getting cloudy.”
Fogerty in turn sued them for unpaid royalties dating back to 2011, which Cook admits was done intentionally. “We stopped paying him,” Cook admits. “We thought, ‘Why should we pay you when you’re taking these kind of un-allowed liberties?’ But we kept the money we owed him, so it wasn’t like it was missing. We were trying to get his attention. We’ve done it to remind him that we were part of it too. Even though he was able to exclude us from the Hall of Fame, he wasn’t able to erase our tracks from the records.”
Matters between Cook and Clifford on one side and Fogerty on the other remain frosty. Cook says he hasn’t spoken with Fogerty in years, and the camps still only communicate through lawyers. Yet he men have reached a certain détente. They’re now all part of Creedence Clearwater Revival LLC, jointly approving projects like the inclusion of the band’s complete Woodstock performance in a box set of the 1969 festival, or an upcoming, first-ever line of Creedence merch.
“It’s not what most people would call a reunion, but it’s still a milestone,” Cook says. “It’s a landmark in our relationship, given how it’s not been a thing of beauty the last 45 years. There’s still a lot of stuff to iron out, but things are functioning more like they should. There’s more trust. From my perspective, it bodes well that we can at least have all the water and mud and shit under the bridge. The media likes to stir things up. We had an ongoing war that would flare up and be gone. But we’re stuck with each other forever, whether we like it or not.”
With or without Fogerty’s blessings, Revisited will replay the vintage classics, from “Proud Mary” to “Fortunate Son,” at state fairs, casinos and other venues through the fall. “We feel we’ve been completely vindicated,” says Cook. “There’s always people who leave nasty posts on our Facebook page. But we don’t pay attention to that. There are still some purists out there, but they don’t know anything about the original band. They don’t have any credence, and that’s with three e e ‘s, not four.”
