These steps are crucial for a successful programming experience.

Types of Dodge Keys

Dodge keys come in various forms, each with its own set of features and functionalities:

Traditional Keys

These are your standard metal keys that are cut to fit the ignition of your Dodge. They are the most basic form of keys and do not require any form of programming.

Transponder Keys

These keys come with a transponder chip inside that communicates with your car's ignition system. They need to be programmed to match your car's onboard computer.

Tom's Key Traditional Key

Smart keys, or key fobs, are the latest in key technology. They allow you to start your car without inserting a key into the ignition, usually by pressing a button on the key fob or inside the car.

I have a 2010 Journey.

We got two RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) fobs with the little keys inside to unlock the driver's door only.

Today I had a locksmith cut a backup key for $3 and it works without issue.

I'm going to hide this outside the car.

I have copies of the 2009 and 2010 owners manuals (electronic). The 2009 one discusses how to program additional fobs. The 2010 states "dealer only".

I took a chance and ordered a used FOB, same FCC ID #, from Ebay.

Manuals say a key can not be reprogrammed once they are used on a vehicle.

Is this true? Can I somehow clear the internal programming on the "used" FOB and program it to my car using the 2 other (good) fobs?

Are all of these "warnings" just a way to point customers to the dealer so they can rape us with excessive charges?

How much is the dealer charging to do it for you?
I'm hoping I will be able to accomplish this without any dealer envolvement.

Here is the problem with your idea. The journey is useing Mercedes Technology with the key fobs. Mercedes Technology is almost identical to the BMW technology in the way it works.

That being said, you shoudl check with the dealer to see how many FOB's you can have programed to 1 car. BMW and MBZ only allow you to have 2 FOBS programed to 1 car at any given time. SO if you program another in, it will effectivly "Bump" one of your keys out of sequence and that one key will not start or lock/unlock the doors. They use this as a securty messue as to not have too many active keys out there at one time....SO if you lose a key and buy another fob, they would bump the lost fob out of the system so that a theif cannot steal the car.

the second half of your question, is no, you cannot use a used FOB from another car. It goes back to MBZ and BMW technology. All fobs are programed from factory to your vehicles VIN# when you order. The WIN has the vin# embeded in its programing. IF the vin's do not match, the FOB will not initialize and work in your car.

Again its a security issue.....or any cheap mechanic can get a fob, program it to your car, and have someone steal your car.

Thank you for your insight.

Note that in the 2009 manual, there is a large amount of information on the key process on page 17 including duplication and the fact that you can have up to 8 keys:

I do not believe there are any changes in the 2010 vehicles in this area (no hardware changes) so the process should be the same.

I need to better understand the "new key" vs "previously used key" issue better to know if I can update my used key or how I can clear the memory.

Thank you for your insight. Note that in the 2009 manual, there is a large amount of information on the key process on page 17 including duplication and the fact that you can have up to 8 keys: "Replacement Keys NOTE: Only RKE transmitters that are programmed to the vehicle electronics can be used to start and operate the vehicle. Once a transmitter is programmed to a vehicle, it cannot be programmed to any other vehicle. At the time of purchase, the original owner is provided with a four-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN). Keep the PIN in a secure location. This number is required for authorized dealer replacement of RKE transmitters. Duplication of RKE transmitters may be performed at an authorized dealer or by using the Customer Key Programming procedure This procedure consists of programming a blank transmitter to the vehicle electronics. A blank transmitter is one that has never been programmed. NOTE: When having the Sentry Key Immobilizer system serviced, bring all vehicle RKE transmitters with you to the authorized dealer. Customer Key Programming If you have two valid RKE transmitters with integrated keys, you can program new transmitters 1. Insert the first valid integrated key into the ignition switch and turn the ignition switch to the ON position for at least three seconds, but no longer than 15 seconds. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the first key. 2. Insert the second valid integrated key and turn the ignition switch to the ON position within 15 seconds. After 10 seconds, a chime will sound and the Vehicle Security Alarm Indicator Light will begin to flash. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the second key. 3. Insert a blank integrated key into the ignition switch and turn the ignition switch to the ON position within 60 seconds. After 10 seconds, a single chime will sound and the Vehicle Security Alarm Indicator Light will stop The new integrated key is programmed. The RKE transmitter will also be programmed during this procedure. Repeat this procedure to program up to eight keys. If you do not have a programmed RKE transmitter with integrated key, contact your authorized dealer for details. NOTE: If a programmed key is lost, see your authorized dealer to have all remaining keys erased from the system’s memory. This will prevent the lost key from starting your vehicle. The remaining keys must then be reprogrammed. All vehicle keys must be taken to an authorized dealer at the time of service to be reprogrammed." I do not believe there are any changes in the 2010 vehicles in this area (no hardware changes) so the process should be the same. I need to better understand the "new key" vs "previously used key" issue better to know if I can update my used key or how I can clear the memory.

I have a 2010 Journey. I bought 2 keys off of ebay that were OEM new and was able to program them using the method described in the 2009 owners manual. The dealer wanted $45 to do program one and $280 for a new one. I payed $89 for the two on Ebay and programed them myself. You have to make sure the part number matches your key. I tried programing one from another source (with no part number on it) and the keyfob part programed but the remote door lock part wouldn't program. You are suppose to be able to have 8 key fobs total.

Dodge Journey key fob not working – causes and how to fix it

The remote keyless system in Dodge Journey allows the driver to conveniently lock and unlock the vehicle with the press of a button. When the key fob stops working, it quickly becomes an inconvenience to manually lock and unlock the vehicle. In some cases it can even leave you stranded if the vehicle can’t detect the key and won’t let you start the engine.

Dodge Journey

The most common cause of key fob not working in Dodge Journey is dead battery. But the remote key can also stop working due to worn buttons, poor battery contact, water damage, defective key fob, receiver module issues, signal interference, dead 12 volt battery, and unpaired key requiring reprogramming.

1. Dead battery in key fob

Dead battery is the leading cause of key fob not working in Journey. Usually there are signs of weakening battery before it gives up. If the remote was working previously, but the range of the remote was gradually decreasing until it ceased to function, this indicates that the battery was wearing out.

dodge journey key fob programming

Replace the battery

If the button cell battery in the key fob of Journey is replaced incorrectly or a battery is unsuitable, it can damage the vehicle key. Only replace drained batteries with new batteries in the same voltage, size, and specification. Make sure the battery is facing in the right direction when inserting it.

Key fob not working after replacing the battery

When purchasing a new battery for the key fob of your Journey, keep in mind that the battery may be sitting on the shelf for a long time. Therefore after replacement it may not work, or may not last that long. Try purchasing the battery from a store where stock moves fast. If you still can’t get the key fob to work after verifying that the battery is healthy, your key fob issues may not be due to bad battery.

dodge journey key fob programming

Starting the engine with dead key fob battery

If your Journey has push button start/stop feature, your vehicle may not start due to weak key fob battery and a ‘key not detected’ alert message may be displayed in the instrument cluster. Don’t worry, you can still start your vehicle, the immobilizer is controlled by a passive transponder. Passive means, among other things, that the transponder in the key does not need its own power source.

dodge journey key fob programming

Touch the start/stop button with your key fob and then start the engine. If it doesn’t work, then look in the owners manual for exact location of key fob placement, as it may vary depending on model.

Use spare key: You can try starting your Journey with its second key. It will also rule out any other problem with the first key, for example, water damage.

How long does the key fob battery last?

Depending on how often you use the key fob or remote control of your Journey, the battery should last between two and four years. This is assuming the new battery you installed is healthy and its use by date is many years away.

2. Poor battery connection

The battery inside the key fob of Journey has metal retaining clips that hold the battery in position and completes the circuit. If the clips don’t have any tension, it can cause contact issues and the remote may not receive any power. Make sure the battery is firmly placed and does not move around when you shake the remote. Also make sure all the battery contacts are corrosion and dust free.

3. Water damage

If your Dodge Journey key fob has taken a bath in the soapy water of the washing machine after you forgot to take it out of your pants pocket, water damage is very likely.

Water resistant, not waterproof

Your Journey key has rubber seals which prevents the water from getting to the electronic chip inside. A splash of water or brief exposure to light rain should be fine, but exposure to excessive amount of water like submerging the key in the pool can cause the water to penetrate the seals and damage the chip. Submerging the key in ocean water at the beach can be much more damaging to key fob electronics due to highly conductive nature of salt water.

But my key fob survived water exposure?

If your Journey key fob survived a wash cycle, or a deep bath in the ocean or pool water, it doesn’t make the key fob waterproof, it means you got lucky. Exposure to excessive water increases the risk of water damage, so you shouldn’t make this a habit.

What to do in case of water damage?

If your Journey key fob stopping working after exposure to clean tap water or rain, immediately remove the battery and clean the electronic component with paper towel and let it dry fully before putting back the battery. In case of exposure to salt water, or soapy or dirty water, it is recommended to clean the chip with isopropyl alcohol or electronic cleaner. If the key fob still doesn’t work after cleaning and drying, the chip is probably fried and you will have to buy a new key.

4. Dead 12 volt battery

The remote keyless system and the central locking system in Journey require the 12 volt battery to be in healthy state to function properly. If the 12 volt battery is dead or if the electric current has been interrupted due to corrosion on the battery terminals or the ground connection, all on-board electronics will stop working.

dodge journey key fob programming

In this case, you will have to manually unlock the door of your Journey with physical key. Also, the electrical accessories (e.g. headlights, fan, and infotainment system) will not function or may function poorly, and the engine will not start. Check the 12v battery and its connections.

5. Signal interference

Journey remote control signal can be disrupted by objects, poor weather conditions or transmitters on the same frequency band close to the vehicle. The remote key may work when you’re near the vehicle, but may not work from a distance. In case of severe interference, the remote may not work at all.

dodge journey key fob programming

Interference signals can be caused not only by neighboring radio masts and towers, but also by unprofessionally installed satellite systems. A large part of the radio interference is caused by defects and aging effects in electrical devices and radio systems, which lead to unwanted emissions, radiation and repercussions on power and communication networks. Your Journey key fob should start working again when you leave the area of interference.

6. Reprogramming required

In rare cases, the remote key of Journey may stop working due to pairing issues. The key can be reprogrammed with an OBDII scanner. You may also be able to program a key by following a few steps, an original key is typically required for successful pairing. The instructions should be mentioned in the owners manual. If you fail to do it yourself, you may have to visit an authorized dealer for reprogramming of the key.

7. Defective key fob

If your Journey key fob stopped working after you dropped it on the floor, you may have damaged the internal chip. Or, if your key fob just stopped working one day out of the blue, in rare cases this could indicate a faulty key fob – assuming you have tried everything to fix the issue e.g. battery replacement, reprogramming and the spare key fob works.

8. Faulty receiver module

Dodge Journey has a remote keyless system receiver that receives radio frequency signals from the key fob. If none of your key fobs work, and and you can’t reprogram the keys, it is possible the receiver module has developed a fault.

You may have to perform further diagnostics to identify the faulty. The keyless entry antenna could be damaged, or the module is just not communicating with other modules on the vehicle. In these cases an OBDII scan tool can be used to verify if the commands are being transmitted and acted on by the security module.

9. Electronic immobilizer fault

The immobilizer is an anti-theft security system that prevents the engine from being started and the vehicle from being moved with an unauthorized vehicle key. A fault in the immobilizer system can prevent your Journey from being started. You may also see a warning light with key symbol or key not detected message in the instrument cluster.

For vehicles with an ignition lock

There is a chip in the vehicle key. The chip automatically deactivates the immobilizer if a valid vehicle key is inserted into the ignition lock. The electronic immobilizer is activated automatically when the vehicle key is removed from the ignition lock.

For vehicles with a starter button

There is a chip in the vehicle key. It is used to automatically deactivate the electronic immobilizer when there is a valid remote control vehicle key in the vehicle interior. The electronic immobilizer is automatically activated as soon as there is no valid vehicle key in the vehicle.

The engine can only be started with a genuine vehicle key that is coded correctly. You can obtain coded vehicle keys from an authorized Dodge dealer.

Reset the system

If the key fob is not working due to a glitch in the keyless entry system, it may be possible to restore the functionality by resetting the keyless entry system in your Journey.

dodge journey key fob programming

There isn’t any button or option to reset the keyless entry system in Journey, but you can reboot all the on-board computers by disconnecting the 12 volt battery for a few minutes. Remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery first, then from the positive terminal. With the battery disconnected, press the horn button a few times and turn on the headlights to drain out all the residual electricity from the system. After about 15 minutes, reconnect the battery in reverse order: positive cable first, then negative cable.

Use OBD2 scanner for diagnosis

Since Dodge Journey is equipped with on-board diagnostics (OBD), a fault diagnosis can provide initial indications of where the malfunction is located. This method will be especially useful when diagnosing a faulty remote keyless system receiver module.

dodge journey key fob programming

To begin troubleshooting, you must first connect the diagnostic tool to your Journey. The OBDII connector is usually located under the dashboard. With the tool connected, turn on the ignition. Most diagnostic devices then ask for some information about the vehicle. It is important that you enter this 100% correctly, otherwise the result of the search may be inaccurate. In addition to the vehicle make, model, and engine type, you usually also have to type in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Since some OBD codes are manufacturer-specific, the scanner will be able to give you more accurate information if you enter more details about your Journey.

Conclusion:

There are many reasons why your Dodge Journey key fob is not working. When looking for the reason, you should start with the most obvious cause that is easy to diagnose: dead battery, which you can replace in a few minutes.

Dodge journey remote start: the full rundown.

Red Dodge Journey on a street

Not all Dodge Journey years are created equal.

CoPilot Compare breaks down pricing and feature differences between Dodge Journey years so you can find the sweet spot between value AND reliability.

The Dodge Journey is a midsize crossover SUV manufactured from 2009 to 2020. Although it’s no longer in new car showrooms, thousands of Journeys are still on the road. Many Journey models came equipped with a handy remote start system, allowing drivers to start their vehicles from a distance with the push of a button or via a smartphone app. Keep reading as we explore everything you need to know about the Dodge Journey remote start feature. You learn about use, troubleshooting, programming, and other essentials.

Dodge Journey Remote Start: Key Fob

The Dodge Journey remote start system allows you to start the engine up to 80 feet away.  It’s an extremely convenient feature on cold winter mornings or hot summer afternoons when you want the interior temperature to be more comfortable before entering the vehicle.

To use remote start, quickly press the remote start button (a curricular arrow surrounding an “x2” symbol) twice within five seconds and hold the button down on the second try. The engine will start, and the hazard lights will flash to confirm that the car is running. The climate control system will come on based on the current settings. Notably, the car must be locked, and the hood, cargo hatch, and all doors must be closed for the system to activate.

Your Journey will operate in remote start mode for 15 minutes before shutting down. The remote start system can be used twice (for a total of 30 minutes) before requiring the driver to reset the system by manually restarting the car.

Dodge Journey Remote Start: Uconnect App

The accompanying smartphone app can start newer Dodge Journeys equipped with the Uconnect system. You’ll want to ensure you’re enrolled in the Uconnect service (which requires a subscription fee), the Uconnect app is installed on the phone, and your phone has a cellular or Wi-Fi signal. Similar functionality is available via the Mopar Connect Owner website (moparownerconnect.com).

To start your Journey:

  • Open the app and log in
  • Locate the circular “engine start/stop” icon
  • Press the icon (you may be asked to enter a PIN)
  • The vehicle will start and provide an in-app confirmation
  • Press the icon again if you want to turn off the engine (there may also be a cancel icon)

NOT JUST FOR CAR SHOPPING

The CoPilot app isn’t just for buying a car - our new CoPilot for Owning tool will help you keep track of recalls and gives you advice on which scheduled maintenance tasks are most important.

Dodge Journey Remote Start: Troubleshooting

While using the Dodge Journey remote start system is usually trouble-free, issues can arise that cause problems. Here’s what to be aware of:

  • The remote start feature can be affected by walls or other obstructions. Signal interference can also be trouble. Try moving to a different position if the vehicle is not starting remotely.
  • A weak key fob battery can also affect range. Change the battery if you find the remote start range decreases over time.
  • Certain conditions will prevent remote start from working, including a check engine light, low fuel indicator, or an alarm signal. These issues may also let the car start but immediately shut down.
  • Only press the remote start button twice within five seconds. Pressing too many times can confuse the system or cause the engine to turn off. Similarly, avoid sitting on the key fob, which can disrupt remote starting.

Dodge Journey Remote Start: Safety Tips

Successful use of your Dodge Journey’s remote start system requires following crucial safety precautions:

  • Review the owner’s manual to get a complete understanding of how the remote start system works.
  • Never remote start your vehicle when it’s in an enclosed space like a garage, which can lead to dangerous carbon monoxide buildup. Remote start should only be used when the car is parked in an open, well-ventilated area.
  • Ensure the parking brake is engaged before starting remotely to prevent accidental movement.
  • Be aware of the surroundings before engaging remote start to avoid startling people or pets that might be nearby.
  • Never leave the keys inside a running, unattended vehicle, even if you’ve engaged the remote start. This is an easy target for theft.
  • Confirm that all the windows are up before activating remote start for extra security.
  • Never remotely start a vehicle needing repair, as problems could worsen.

Using remote start is convenient, but following basic precautions keeps you, your vehicle, and the surroundings secure. Stay alert and be responsible when using this feature.

THE DODGE JOURNEY YEARS TO AVOID

If you’re going to spend money on a car, it should be a great one that will last. Read on to learn more about which  Dodge Journey years to avoid and which one to look at as a potential future investment.

Programming Key Fobs

If you have an unprogrammed replacement key fob or want to add an additional fob, you can program it yourself in most Journey models. The process takes about five minutes and requires two working key fobs. Here are the basic programming steps:

  • Make sure the new unprogrammed fob is within 1-3 feet of the vehicle.
  • Insert an already programmed fob into the ignition cylinder and turn to the “on” position.
  • Press the “lock” button on the programmed fob once.
  • Within 10 seconds, press the “lock” button on the unprogrammed fob twice.
  • Turn the ignition back to the “off” position and remove the programmed key fob.
  • Test that the new fob works by pressing its lock and remote start buttons.

Consult the owner’s manual for your specific Journey year and trim for any variations on these instructions. If programming fails, wait 10 minutes before trying again. You may need to contact an automotive locksmith or a Dodge dealer for additional help.

Aftermarket Remote Start Systems

If your Dodge Journey didn’t come with remote start, you can still add this handy feature by installing an aftermarket system. Avoid the temptation to buy a cheap unit. Instead, stick with a name brand like Viper, Avital, or Compustar. You’ll be less likely to encounter installation problems or issues that can damage your car’s electrical system.

Prices for a quality system will run $200–$500 before installation costs. Unless you’re an experienced installer, spend the money to have a professional add the remote starter to your car.

Here are some features to look for:

  • Extended range: some aftermarket systems can reach up to 1,500 feet
  • Custom features: options include adjustable timers or smartphone app controls
  • Warranty: Look for coverage that provides at least one year of protection on parts (the installer should also offer a warranty on their services)

An aftermarket solution can provide the convenience and comfort of remote start in your Dodge Journey without the factory option.

Everything You Need To Know About Replacing Your Dodge Journey Key Fob

You can't predict everything. Especially your Dodge Journey key fob suddenly not working, breaking, or getting lost on a day when time is short. When that happens, Keyless Entry Remote is there to help you find a solution.

Use this guide to learn how to replace your Dodge Journey key fob's battery and what to do when you've lost or damaged your remote.

Dodge Journey Key Fob Battery Replacement Instructions

A dead battery is the most common reason a remote stops working. To find the correct replacement battery for your Dodge Journey key fob, use this battery finder by entering your year, make, and model. Dodge Journey remotes usually use a CR2032 battery. Most key fob batteries cost less than $6 and are available for purchase online.

Follow the below instructions to open your Dodge Journey key fob and replace the battery:

For newer Dodge Journeys, insert the hidden key into a designated slot to open the case. For older Dodge Journeys, use a thin object (like a flathead screwdriver) to pry open the case at the notch. After opening the case, gently lift the circuit board to access the battery. Before removing the battery, note how it fits in the case. Next, replace the old battery with the new one and close the case. Test your key fob's functionality by pressing buttons to ensure it is working properly. If it doesn't work, adjust the battery by ensuring the connections are clean and in contact with the battery.

To see step-by-step video instructions on replacing your remote's battery, search for your Dodge Journey key fob on our YouTube page. If you cannot find your specific Dodge Journey key fob, you can find a video showing the battery replacement process of a different remote that is the same type as yours.

There are five types of key fobs:

  • Exactly as it sounds, just a remote with no other special features
  • A remote with an attached key that flips out like a switchblade
  • A remote with a key blade sticking out of it, the key blade does not retract or hide
  • A remote with a key hidden inside, the key fob and key blade are not connected
  • A remote that is often associated with push-to-start

If changing your Dodge Journey key fob's battery does not resolve your issue, you may need to replace your Dodge Journey key fob entirely.

Dodge Journey Key Fob Case & Key Blade Replacement Tips

The extent of the damage to your Dodge Journey key fob will determine your options.

A damamged key blade means you need to order a new, uncut key blade and have it cut. To cut your key blade, seek out trusted automotive professionals, such as the ones found here on our Locksmith Locator page.

If your Dodge Journey key fob's case is damaged but the internal electronics are fine, you can easily replace the case. The availability of Dodge Journey key fob cases cannot be guaranteed. If you don't mind not having a logo, you can try aftermarket cases.

If your remote is damaged beyond the key blade or case, then you may need to replace your Dodge Journey key fob entirely.

Dodge Journey Key Fob Replacement Costs

A replacement Dodge Journey key fob is the only solution to a lost or severely damaged remote. Brand-new replacements can cost you $200 or more. A used, refurbished key fob is a more cost-effective option.

Dodge Journey Key Fob Programming Instructions

After you purchase your replacement Dodge Journey key fob, your next 2 steps are figuring out how you are going to program your remote and finding an automotive professional to cut the key blade. Some key fobs are easy to program by yourself, but others require an automotive locksmith.

To find out whether you can self-program your Dodge Journey key fob or need help, look up your key fob programming instructions here. If you do need an automotive professional, find a trusted locksmith on our Locksmith Locator page.
