Family guy: 5 celebrities who voiced themselves (& 5 who did not).

Family Guy tends to include celebrities into its show, typically to poke fun at them. Some of these celebrities voice themselves, while others do not.

Family Guy , Seth MacFarlane's animated hit on FOX, has grown in popularity over the past two decades, with many celebrity guests providing their own voices. Some have played an animated counterpart to themselves, a fictional character and in some cases, portrayed another famous person. When a show has been on for eighteen seasons, the level of talent is usually quite high.

As animation is solely a visual medium, it can sometimes be hard to tell whether the actual person is doing their voice, especially if the show found a talented mimic. Read on for five celebrities who have played themselves on  Family Guy and five who have not.

Did: Adam West

As the late star of the 1960s  Batman television series, West played a fictionalized version of himself, Mayor West, from 2000 up until he died in 2017 aged 88.   In the context of the show, this character was the eccentric, childlike mayor of Quahog, the central location of  Family Guy .

Additionally, Mayor West also had a connection to the Griffin family through his marriage to Carol Pewterschmidt, Lois Griffin's younger sister. He was responsible for numerous hilarious moments and lines throughout the years. After the real West's death, the show's High School was posthumously named in his honor.

Did Not: John Williams

Williams is an acclaimed composer, known for many iconic film soundtracks. These include  Jaws , Star Wars ,  Superman ,  Harry Potter ,  and  ET . Overall, while Williams' name or voice may not be well-known to many people, his work is very recognizable.

Williams has appeared in  Family Guy on several occasions. However, he did not provide his voice. Instead, actor Bruce McGill played the composer.

Did: Connie Britton

Britton is an actress/singer known for starring roles on various popular, long-running television series. These include the coming of age sports drama  Friday Night Lights , the  anthology horror  American Horror Story ,  and musical drama  Nashville .

Britton has also voiced herself on  Family Guy . One example is a memorable cutaway gag in "Baking Bad" (Season 13, Episode 3) in which Peter Griffin eats Britton's hair while comparing it to Lois' homebaked cookies. Britton has also played herself in "Brian The Closer" (Season 13, Episode 5).

Did Not: David Letterman

The former host of   Late Show With David Letterman ,  this man interviewed a vast number of celebrity guests during his two-decade tenure. To be more precise, Letterman presided over the show for 4,261 episodes. His stint began in 1993 and lasted until 2015.

RELATED: 10 Best Meta Jokes In Family Guy That Some Fans Missed

Despite being so well-known across the United States, Letterman did not provide his voice on  Family Guy . Although his fictional, animated counterpart appeared more than once, it was always impressionist Dave Van Dam doing the voice.

Did: Gene Simmons

Simmons, the frontman of rock band KISS, has appeared multiple times on  Family Guy , in his full performance attire. In the story, he is a past lover of Lois Griffin before finding fame as a musician. Since  Family Guy is a comedy and not a straight drama, protagonist Peter Griffin (Lois' husband) takes pride in the fact that the two slept together, rather than being annoyed.

Providing his voice with each appearance, some of the plots that the animated Simmons has been involved in include playing at a fictitious Kiss-based festival in Quahog, supporting the Griffin family's band, and appearing for a fourth-wall-breaking curtain call at the end of an episode.

Did Not: Patrick Swayze

The late star of classic films including   Dirty Dancing and  Ghost,  Swayze was at the height of his fame throughout the 1980s, achieving status as a "sex symbol" with his leading man roles. He won numerous accolades such as a Golden Globe nomination for each of the aforementioned films. In 2009, Swayze died of pancreatic cancer at 57.

In Swayze's appearances on  Family Guy , which occurred on more than one occasion, it was never him doing the voice. While his animated counterpart visited Peter Griffin from beyond the grave and depicted an alternate ending to  Dirty Dancing , the voice was provided, in Swayze's last episode to date, by his brother Don.

Did: Bryan Cranston

Cranston is a diverse actor known for several roles across different genres. Most notably, he has played cancer-stricken chemistry teacher turned drug lord Walter White/Heisenberg on  Breaking Bad  and Hal, the lovable if the somewhat childish father of Malcolm and his siblings on  Malcolm In The Middle.    He has appeared in other shows including  Seinfeld, The X-Files, and How I Met Your Mother .

On  Family Guy , while Cranston has played fictional characters, he also played himself on one occasion, appearing in live-action during the episode "Herpe, The Love Sore" (Season 12, Episode 16). Cranston also reprised his role as Hal in "I Take Thee Quagmire" (Season 4, Episode 21) and Peter's boss Bert in "Pawtucket Pete" (Season 17, Episode 9).

Did Not: Shonda Rhimes

Since 2005, Rhimes has been known for creating and/or producing a string of successful dramas for ABC. These include  Grey's Anatomy , Scandal ,  and  Private Practice .  Rhimes is also an executive producer of  How To Get Away With Murder.

In "Emmy- Winning Episode" (Season 16, Episode 1), Rhimes appears among other celebrities who are against  Family Guy winning an Emmy as well as white actors voicing characters from an ethnic minority. For this purpose, she was voiced by actress/writer/comedian Frances Callier.

Did: James Woods

Woods, a two-time Academy Award nominee, and two-time Emmy winner is a recurring presence in  Family Guy . As well as the local High School formerly being named after the actor, he has also been a thorn in Peter Griffin's side. In the Agatha Christie inspired episode "And Then There Were None" (Season 9, Episode 1), Woods is seemingly killed-off, only to return in a later season.

RELATED: Mila Kunis' 10 Best Roles, According To IMDB

In addition to playing himself as a character in the story, Woods also filled the role of "host" of the episode "Inside Family Guy" (Season 15, Episode 4) in which the audience is shown the day-to-day operations of how the fictitious  Family Guy show-within-a-show is run. However, in the context of the episode, Woods still interacted with the characters as real people.

Did Not: Miley Cyrus

Once known as the star of Disney sitcom  Hannah Montana . Cyrus has successfully reinvented herself to have a steady singing and acting career as an adult. She has sung in many different genres including country, hip hop, and pop.

On  Family Guy , she was voiced by Candace Marie Celmer, a fellow actress/singer-songwriter. The character of Stewie Griffin is depicted as being a fan of Cyrus and her alter-ego, Hannah Montana. Celmer reprised the role in an episode of  The Cleveland Show.

Inside Tom Cruise's Peculiar Reaction To Seth MacFarlane After Being Ruthlessly Parodied On Family Guy

  • Tom Cruise laughed off Family Guy's harsh parody, praising Seth MacFarlane's comedic talent.
  • Despite South Park's controversial portrayal of him, Cruise backlash resulted in halting subsequent episode reruns.
  • Tom Cruise rejected a role on The Simpsons, leaving fans to wonder if he disdained being parodied.

Tom Cruise is one of the most famous stars in the world. In his decades-plus career making some of the most iconic films ever, Cruise has been publicly parodied numerous times. This includes a brutal satirization by Seth MacFarlane on Family Guy.

During a joint interview on The Graham Norton Show, Cruise had the chance to confront MacFarlane about his parody. In this article, we will take a look at just how Tom Cruise responded when he came face to face with Seth MacFarlane, as well as Cruise's response to being satirized on South Park and The Simpsons.

How Did Tom Cruise Respond To Seth MacFarlane After He Roasted Him On Family Guy?

Tom Cruise faced one of his most pointed parodies in an episode of Family Guy that depicted him as a tiny, homosexual kidnapper. While Cruise has been the butt of many jokes, this Family Guy bit was easily one of the most pointed. But unlike many celebrities who have been satirized on the Fox show, Cruise got a chance to look the creator in the eye.

Alongside his Edge of Tomorrow co-star, Emily Blunt , Tom Cruise sat with Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane on The Graham Norton Show.

Sitting alongside Cruise and Blunt were other A-list celebrities, Charlize Theron and Seth MacFarlane, who were there to promote their movie A Million Ways to Die in the West. During one particular segment, the show's host brought up Family Guy. This gave Cruise the perfect opportunity to confront the man responsible for his brutal parody. But he didn't take it...

One might suspect that Tom Cruise (known for his short temper when he feels disrespected, for example, the time he lost his temper when someone touched him ) would have harbored some form of animosity towards Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane for his constant jokes about him. But surprisingly, there was nothing but love between the two stars.

During another segment on the Graham Norton Show, Norton brought up the topic of voice impressions, for which McFarlane is famous. Not to be outdone, Cruise started by revealing his near-perfect interpretation of Donald Duck, which left the host, the guest, and the audience in a fit of laughter.

Why Twitter Hasn't Canceled Family Guy, According To Seth MacFarlane

Seth MacFarlane later mimicked Kermit the Frog as he recited a monologue from the film Taken. At that point, Tom Cruise laughed hysterically at McFarlane 's spot-on interpretation of the fictional character. The Vanilla Sky actor commended Seth MacFarlane on his superior voicing skills, adding that he was a "funny guy."

Tom Cruise Was Livid After South Park Parodied Him During An Episode

Family Guy isn't the only animated series that made fun of Tom Cruise. The actor also infamously appeared in a 2005 episode of South Park. The episode in question, titled 'Trapped in the Closet', portrayed Tom Cruise as a homosexual man who was hiding in a closet . The episode also made fun of his Scientology beliefs .

According to a report in Indie Wire , the South Park episode was written using the consultation services of author Mark Ebner, who wrote a book entitled "Hollywood, Interrupted," a criticism of Scientology.

Leah Remini Revealed On Real Time With Bill Maher That Tom Cruise Doesn't Follow Every Rule With Scientology

Due to the graphic nature of the South Park episode, Tom Cruise threatened not to do a promotional tour for his film Mission: Impossible III due to the fact that Paramount Pictures ' parent company, Viacom, had been responsible for re-running the South Park episode on Comedy Central.

Although Paramount and Viacom agreed to cease subsequent re-running of the South Park episode and justly complied, a report in Fox News noted that Paramount Pictures' later signed a deal with South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone for additional movies.

Tom Cruise Flat Out Rejected A Voice-Over Role in The Simpsons

In Season 4 of the widely popular animated series The Simpsons, Tom Cruise was parodied in an episode entitled "Brother From The Same Planet."

In the episode, Homer Simpson and his son Bart are at odds because of the latter's sudden popularity. Due to their rift, Bart applied for a surrogate father via a Big Brother program and was assigned a military pilot specialist known as Tom, with whom Homer Simpson later engaged in a fight.

Tom's voice was spoken by the late actor Phil Hartman , who had voiced many characters on The Simpsons since its inception.

The Simpsons Recruited Lady Gaga To Guest Star But The Result Was A Complete Nightmare

While the Tom character was a reference to Tom Cruise in his role in the film Top Gun: Maverick, the actor would have been an obvious choice to speak in the role. In fact, many celebrities on The Simpsons have been voiced by many stars, playing themselves, in the past.

According to a report in the editorial Screen Rant , The Simpsons producers initially approached Tom Cruise to voice the character of Tom. However, Cruise declined the opportunity seemingly without reason. But many fans have since debated whether the actor was too busy to take on the role or just disdained the idea of being parodied.

Is Hannah Waddingham Single? All About The Fall Guy Star's Family, Child & More

Get to know the Emmy-winning Ted Lasso star ahead of The Fall Guy ’s May 3 premiere.

She won an Emmy for her TV turn as the hard-charging owner of the soccer club at the center of Ted Lasso . Now, she’s about to be a big part of this summer’s big-screen season, including an upcoming role alongside Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt in Universal Pictures’ The Fall Guy . But behind the scenes, there’s a whole lot more to know about English actor Hannah Waddingham .

Long a star of the British stage before getting her first big Hollywood break (as Septa Unella, the “shame nun” on Game of Thrones ), the 49 year-old star will be easy to spot this summer (and beyond) at the movies. In addition to playing taskmaster film producer Gail Meyer in The Fall Guy (get your tickets here !), she’ll voice a big animated meanie opposite Chris Pratt in The Garfield Movie , as well as kicking it with Tom Cruise in the next Mission: Impossible  sequel.

Ready to learn more about the fascinating life of this dynamic single mom? Let’s dive in!

Is Hannah Waddingham Married?

No, The Fall Guy and Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham is not married.

Though she was linked for a decade to Italian businessman Italian Gianluca Cugnetto, Waddingham and Cugnetto never tied the knot and today, she remains single. The couple’s long-running courtship did produce a child, now 9 years old, whom Waddingham proudly raises as a single mom.

Waddingham’s ongoing bachelorette status does come with some pretty high standards, as the actor explained in a late 2023 interview for the Reign with Josh Smith Podcast . “My love life is dry. I’m so busy and just a bit picky,” said Waddingham. “I’m nearly 50 and I’m like, ‘Dude, if you are not going to step up, step off and be gone!’ I’d rather hang with my girlfriends and gay friends and be respected.”

What to Know About Hannah Waddingham’s Daughter

Born in 2104, Waddingham’s daughter, Kitty, is now 9 years old. Thanks to her mother’s understandable commitment to letting her child grow up in private, media has kept a respectful distance from prying too deeply into the family’s personal life, though Waddingham herself has indicated that her daughter — born after Waddingham was reportedly told she wouldn’t be able to conceive — has been a special blessing.

“My primary function is being a single mama,” Waddingham explained to People last year about balancing motherhood with her ascending Hollywood stardom. “…I keep saying to her that we are a team and that I have to do this. I have to strike while the iron is hot. I'm not so conceited that I would think that I will always have this kind of focus. I've always said to her, ‘Mommy must take this time while the light shines on me, because the light shines on you.’”

The Fall Guy might be the latest place to catch Waddingham onscreen, but chance are you’ve seen her in big-ticket American productions already. In addition to her breakout role on Game of Thrones , Waddingham held recurring roles on SYFY in Krypton and the critically acclaimed 12 Monkeys before taking up her star turn on Ted Lasso .

On the big screen, Waddingham has most recently starred as the Mother Witch in 2022’s Hocus Pocus 2 , and now it looks like her movie career is just a wand-wave away from kicking into seriously high gear. On top of The Fall Guy, she’s also set to voice main animated baddie Jinx in The Garfield Movie , as well as a still-secret role opposite Tom Cruise in the yet-untitled Mission: Impossible movie sequel due out in 2025. As a fun side note, her Garfield role isn’t the first time Waddingham has voiced an animated character: She’s also teamed up with Community creator Dan Harmon to voice a Greek goddess in Harmon’s adult animated sitcom Krapopolis .

Catch Waddingham alongside Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt in Universal Pictures’ The Fall Guy, opening in theaters everywhere on Friday, May 4. Grab your tickets here !
