‘They knocked everyone’s socks off’ – How ABBA’s Eurovision win 50 years ago changed the course of pop music
Share this with
There’s no doubt that ABBA has cemented their status as true icons of the music world, with their impressive back catalogue of smash hits adored from generation to generation and fans turning out in their millions to see the band’s ABBA Voyage show .
And this weekend marks 50 years since the band’s breakthrough at the Eurovision Song Contest when they won for Sweden with Waterloo.
The foursome – consisting of Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad – have since become synonymous with Eurovision glory. But when they took to the stage at the Brighton Dome in England on April 6 1974, they were virtual unknowns to the British audience and worldwide viewers watching from home.
‘No one had heard of them outside of Sweden but from the moment they came on stage, people sat forward in their seats ,’ Jan Iles-Kaluza tells Metro, who was working as a music journalist for Record Mirror at the time and has since released the book ‘The Magazine Girls book’. ‘It was a pretty bland show before they came on. But their song was instantly catchy and it just caught everyone’s attention. It was their competition from that moment. They knocked everyone’s socks off and had that energy that fans still love to this date.’
Another thing about the group that immediately drew attention was the flamboyant stage costumes. The foursome were resplendent in shiny satin suits, bold metallic boots and bell bottoms.
‘They just had that look about them,’ Jan recalls. ‘They looked incredible and encapsulated the magic and the style of the 70s.’
Though the band has since admitted that the fitted attire was not the most comfortable to spot.
‘I remember funnily enough the shuttle bus from the hotel to the actual arena where my outfit was so tight, I couldn’t sit down…I was slightly overweight,’ Björn recalled of the night in an interview last year.
ABBA stormed to victory on the night and were awarded 24 points, with Italy’s Gigliola Cinquetti coming second with 18.
‘I remember going into work on Monday and people were talking about the performance,’ Jan says. ‘There were still a few music snobs who turned their noses up to Eurovision but so many agreed Waterloo was simply a great pop song.’
ABBA’s victory at Eurovision was a long time coming as Benny had already tried to enter his song ‘Hej Clown’ for the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest. Though he lost out, he met fellow hopeful Anni-Frid Lyngstad and the pair soon became a couple.
Coincidentally around the same time, Björn Ulvaeus met another singer-songwriter Agnetha Fältskog whilst filming a television special. Björn and Benny already knew each other through the music scene and had already collaborated on a few songs. The foursome came together and officially formed ABBA in 1972. They first tried to enter Eurovision in 1973 but placed third at Melodifestivalen, Sweden’s annual event to decide the Eurovision entry. Yet they remained determined.
‘We knew that the Eurovision Song Contest was the only route for a Swedish group to make it outside Sweden,’ Björn insisted in a recent interview.
Winning at Eurovision was only the beginning for ABBA. Waterloo, which they had translated into English for the competition, went on to top the charts all over the world, including the UK, and reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Overnight, they became household names.
‘As a music journalist, I became the unofficial ABBA correspondent and started reaching out to interview them shortly after their win,’ Jan says. ‘A lot of people were intrigued by their dynamic as they were both couples. But every time I interviewed them, they stayed professional and only wanted to discuss the music. They were all kind and funny but they were focused. The men especially were ambitious and sought success. They had exceptional talent as songwriters.’
The group achieved UK number one singles with Fernando (1976), Dancing Queen (1976), Knowing Me, Knowing You (1977), The Name of the Game (1977), Take a Chance On Me (1978), The Winner Takes it All (1980), and Super Trouper (1980).
Yet when they returned to the studio in 1982, both couples had since split and they decided to take a break. Still, the love for their music refused to die down. In 1992 they released their greatest hits record ABBA Gold, which has gone platinum 20 times. In 1999, their music was turned into the stage musical Mamma Mia! and in 2008, a film adaptation was made starring Meryl Streep.
Then in 2021, the band released their album Voyage ahead of their virtual reality concert of the same name. The show, which uses virtual avatars (dubbed ‘ABBAtars’) to depict the group as they appeared in 1979, has sold more than 1.5 million tickets. In recent weeks, there have been reports that the group could be set to sign a multi-million dollar deal to take the show to Vegas .
With this year’s Eurovision taking place in ABBA’s homeland of Sweden, many hoped the band would reunite on stage to mark the momentous anniversary. But sadly for fans, it seems unlikely.
Asked about the chance of a surprise reunion, Benny insisted last year: ‘I don’t want to, and if I don’t want to, the others won’t. It’s the same for all four of us – someone says, ‘no’ – it’s a no.’

Even as many schools move away from requiring standardized test scores, experts say a strong score can still help you stand out as an applicant. Expectations vary by institution.
When they are considered, SAT scores are just a piece of the college admissions process. Schools also review students' GPAs , course rigor, extracurricular activities, essays and letters of recommendation.
Although colleges have historically used standardized test scores to determine "college readiness," some observers say that a student's transcript gives a fuller picture.
"A three-hour test on a Saturday morning is a very brief snapshot into a student's abilities," says Connie Livingston, head of college counselors at college admissions consulting firm Empowerly. "Whereas a transcript really shows how students have grown, improved or maintained their academic excellence throughout the years and how they have maximized those opportunities at their schools."
More than 1,900 four-year colleges have announced plans to go test-optional or test-blind for fall 2024, according to the National Center for Fair and Open Testing, a nonprofit advocacy group.
But even as many schools move away from requiring standardized test scores, experts say a strong score can help an applicant stand out.
That's especially true given evidence that grade inflation has been on the rise. High school GPAs, on average, increased from 3.17 in 2010 to 3.36 in 2021, according to a 2022 report from ACT . At the same time, the highest grade inflation – a term used to describe an increase in students’ grades that doesn't necessarily correlate with an increase in their academic achievement – occurred between 2018 and 2021, an increase of 0.1 grade points, the most recent data show.
"The whole point of a standardized test was for there to be a standardized metric, because a 97 (grade percentage) at one school is not the same thing as a 97 at another high school," says Pranoy Mohapatra, director of New Jersey-based PM Tutoring.
Livingston advises students to take either the SAT or ACT at least once, as long as there are no logistical or financial barriers. From there, students applying to a test-optional school can decide whether it's beneficial to submit their scores.
"If they score well, not only is it another metric or data point for the school to use to evaluate their candidacy, but it could also open up merit aid opportunities," she says.
A Good SAT Score for College Admissions
A strong score is subjective, as expectations vary by institution and sometimes by major .
"If you were applying to an engineering program at a college that is going to admit you from a pool of students who are (also) applying for engineering, the question is not, 'Is your SAT score good?'" And the question is not, 'Is a 1470 a good score?' Because it is a good score," says Evelyn Jerome-Alexander, a certified educational planner and founder of Magellan College Counseling. "But if the 1470 were a 770 on English and a 700 on math, the chances are very high that at a school that has an engineering college, the math score for an engineering applicant or a business applicant will be higher than the critical reading score."
The average SAT score for the high school class of 2022 was 1050, down by 10 points from the class of 2021, according to a report from the College Board, which administers the SAT. That score falls within the range of many schools, like Liberty University in Virginia, where half of the admitted applicants had an SAT score between 1020 and 1220, according to the school's website .
Many other colleges, such as Indiana University—Bloomington , have an average SAT score over 1200 for incoming freshmen. Ivy Leagues and other top universities, like the University of Chicago and Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, prefer even higher scores – generally over 1500 – their school websites indicate.
Experts suggest students do their research and look up the "middle 50" – the range of scores between the 25th percentile and 75th percentile for the last admitted class – on each college's website to see if their score falls within or above that range. Students should set their target score to either meet or exceed those ranges. They can also aim to reach a school's minimum score requirement for merit aid .
Here's a look at the 25th and 75th SAT percentiles in math and reading combined for newly enrolled students in fall 2022 at the top 10 National Universities , as ranked by U.S. News. California Institute of Technology did not report SAT or ACT scores and through 2025 will not consider them during admissions.
Not only is a good score relative to each college, but also to each student. The strength of the score can depend on an individual's GPA, the rigor of the high school courses they take and where they attend high school, says Amy Seeley, founder and president of Seeley Test Pros, LLC, an Ohio-based tutoring company.
"Students are often judged in comparison to their peers," she says. "So what is the kind of level of work that's happening with other students? If a student is at a school where there are no honors or AP courses , then of course they're not going to be judged as much. But they are going to need a score that sets them apart from the other students at that school."
SAT Percentiles
A score in the 50th percentile means a student scored equal to or higher than 50% of other test-takers. The higher the percentile rank, the better.
The table below shows a breakdown of SAT composite scores by percentile based on exam results, per the most recent College Board data . It shows nationally representative sample percentiles, which are based on a study of juniors and seniors, and are weighted to represent all U.S. students in those grades regardless of whether they take the test.
Recommendations to Improve Your SAT Score
Retaking the SAT can be time-consuming and costly, so figure out what your bandwidth is. Consider your home responsibilities, after-school activities and homework load.
"It plays a role in how much time students can spend on test prep and perhaps limit their ability to improve," Mohapatra says.
Some families hire test prep tutors or coaches, but studying for the SAT does not have to cost hundreds of dollars. Students can work independently and use free online test prep resources, like Khan Academy , a College Board partner.
"Our tool gives you insights on the areas where you are already really strong – i.e., don't bother spending more practice time in those areas – and the areas where you are relatively weaker," says Priscilla Rodriguez, senior vice president for college readiness assessments at the College Board.
If a college superscores, a student's highest scores from each section on all test attempts are combined to create a new composite score. In these cases, "you can minimize or reduce your preparation because you may only need to focus on one particular section," Seeley says.
Some schools, however, require applicants to submit all of their test scores from each sitting.
In that case, "I think there is some disagreement within the industry as to whether (retaking the test multiple times) hurts a student or not," Seeley says. "But I've always said that for the most part, a college is going to take your best scores and use that to create their acceptance profile."
Practice is key to improving your scores, but don't overdo it, experts warn. Livingston advises students not to take the SAT more than three times, as their score may start to plateau.
"Test prep should not come at the expense of creating a balanced college list and putting real significant effort into articulating why you are a good fit for each college on your list and why they are a good fit for you," Jerome-Alexander says. "Because colleges look at the transcript primarily and they look heavily at teacher and counselor recommendation letters. But they're looking a lot at essays these days. They really want to hear students' stories. Stories are more valuable than test scores, and if you present yourself in a way that makes yourself memorable and likable, colleges will want you in their class."

Sat / act prep online guides and tips, 262 sat vocab words you must know.
SAT Writing , SAT Reading
A lot of students immediately think of vocabulary when they hear the word SAT. But are SAT vocab words really that important for doing well on the test? Kind of. If you’re aiming for a high score, you’ll definitely want to spend some time learning key SAT words.
In this guide, we give you a comprehensive list of 262 of the most common SAT vocabulary words. We also explain how vocab is tested on the SAT, what types of questions you’ll see, and how to get the most out of your vocab prep.
How Is Vocabulary Tested on the SAT?
The SAT has undergone a number of overhauls over the years that have made vocabulary a far less important part of the test. There are fewer vocabulary questions on the current SAT than there were on older versions of the exam, which include qustion types like analogies that focused solely on testing vocab knowledge.
That said, it'll still benefit you to study vocab, especially if you're aiming for a high or perfect score .
All SAT words are about medium difficulty and are tested in the context of reading passages, so you’ll get not just a sentence but an entire paragraph or passage to work with.
Context clues make memorizing SAT vocab words less important on the current SAT than it was on the old SAT, back when you had to memorize dozens of obscure words and answer questions that dealt with isolated sentences ( these were called Sentence Completion problems ). This made vocab questions particularly hard since you were given minimal context with which to solve them.
What Do SAT Vocabulary Questions Look Like?
The new digital SAT has one Reading and Writing section broken into four domains: Craft and Structure, Information and Ideas, Standard English Conventions, and Expression of Ideas. Only one domain, Craft and Structure, includes vocabulary as a tested skill.
According to College Board's description of this domain, "Students will use comprehension, vocabulary, analysis, synthesis, and reasoning skills and knowledge to understand and use high-utility words and phrases in context, evaluate texts rhetorically, and make connections between topically related texts."
There are approximately 13-15 questions total in this domain, which makes up about 28 percent of the Reading and Writing section of the SAT. But as you can see from the description, vocabulary is not tested in isolation, but in context . That means you won't see a vocabulary word and then be asked to choose the correct definition. Instead, you'll be tested on whether you can use context clues to interpret certain vocabulary words and understand the meaning of a phrase or passage.
It will help to know alternative meanings of relatively common words, such as “directly” and “hold.” While you might come across slightly more difficult SAT words, you generally shouldn’t see any as hard as those on the old SAT.
Here's an example of a Reading vocabulary question (with the relevant part of the passage shown):

In addition to Words in Context questions, you’ll get questions that require you to pick a single word or phrase in order to paraphrase or clarify part of a passage. With these questions, you must understand what all the SAT vocab words mean so that you can choose the right answer.
Here are some examples of these questions:
A sample SAT question with single vocab words as answer choices. (Source: Official SAT Practice Test #1 )

In these examples, you'll need to know the definitions of a variety of SAT vocabulary words, such as “substantiated,” “freewheeling,” and “scandalous,” so that you can select the right answer choice.
262 SAT Vocab Words You’re Bound to See on Test Day
Now that you know how vocabulary plays a role on the SAT, let's go over the 262 words and definitions we suggest knowing if you want to get a high score on SAT Reading and Writing.
To compile this list, we dug through all official SAT practice tests , looking at both the Reading and Writing sections (and not just the questions but the answer choices and passages, too). We also looked at SAT words from other online vocab lists.
Though you don’t need to memorize all the words below, familiarizing yourself with most of them should help you better identify the tones of passages and make you more efficient at interpreting and answering questions correctly on SAT Reading and Writing.
Below, we give you each word, its part of speech, its definition, and an example sentence (or more if the word has multiple definitions/parts of speech). All words are listed in alphabetical order.
How to Study SAT Words Effectively: 3 Essential Tips
Now that you've got a huge list of SAT vocabulary words you can work with, what’s the best way to study them? Here are three key tips to help you get the most out of your SAT vocab studies.
#1: Make Flashcards and Use the Waterfall Method
One of the absolute best ways to study SAT vocab words is to make flashcards. This lets you control which SAT words you study and even randomizes them so that you don't accidentally memorize words in a predetermined order.
We recommend using the waterfall method to study your flashcards. With this method, you'll get to see all the words in your deck, going over the most challenging words more often than the ones you already know or sort of know.
Here's how to use the waterfall method:
Once you’ve made your flashcards, split them up into decks (you can put whatever words you want in these decks) of about 30-50 cards each. Choose one deck to be your Starting Stack.
Go through your Starting Stack, looking at each and every card. For the words you know, put them in a Know It pile. For the words you don’t know, put them in a separate Struggled pile as so:
Now, pick up your Struggled pile and go through each card in it (leave your Know It pile where it is). Put the cards you know in a second Know It pile and the ones you don’t know in a Struggled pile.
You should now have two Know It piles and one Struggled pile:
Repeat this process of picking up your Struggled pile and going through each card until you’re left with about one to five cards in your Struggled pile:
By now you should know most, if not all, cards in your deck. But it isn’t enough to just go through them once— you also have to work back up your “waterfall” of cards.
To do this, combine your Struggled pile with your last Know It pile (the pile closest to the Struggled pile). T his will be your Working pile. Go through all the cards in this pile. If there are any words you forgot, go through the entire pile again and again until you've learned all the definitions in it.
Continue this pattern by combining your current Working pile with the next Know It pile. Go through all these cards until you know each one.
At the end, you should have made your way all the back to your original Starting Stack. You now know all the SAT words and their meanings in your deck! Repeat this waterfall method with the other decks you make so that you can learn even more critical SAT vocab words.
#2: Focus On Words You Don’t Know
If you don’t have time to study the entire list above or only want to learn some SAT words, use our list to make a new vocab list containing only the words you don’t know. So i f you know a word or are fairly sure you’ll be able to recognize it on test day, skip it and instead focus on the words you’ll have the most trouble remembering. Once you have your list, use the waterfall method to study it.
If you’re not a fan of paper flashcards, you can opt for digital flashcards. Anki is a free software you can download and use to make your own flashcards. The program uses spaced-repetition software (SRS) to show you difficult cards more often than those you know (basically, a digital version of the waterfall method).
#3: Take Official SAT Practice Tests
Since the majority of the words in our list above come from official SAT practice tests , once you’ve studied these SAT words, you can put your knowledge to the test by taking a practice test. This lets you see whether you truly know the meanings of the words and whether you’ll be able to get the right answers in the context of a full-length, timed test—just like the real SAT.
If you miss any questions because you forgot the meaning of a word, go back over our SAT vocab words list using your flashcards and the waterfall method.
The Best SAT Vocab Flashcards
If you plan to make your own SAT vocab flashcards from our list, you'll need at least 300 blank index cards and a system to keep them organized. These basic cards are an affordable option that are also available in fun colors . You can keep them organized with plastic baggies or rubber bands, or you can get an organizer . Alternatively, try these easy-flip flashcards that include binder clips.
Though we strongly recommend making your own flashcards, you can also buy pre-made ones. There aren't a lot of options for the new SAT. We'd recommend going with Barron's 1100 Words You Need to Know , a series of exercises to master key words and idioms, or Manhattan's GRE flashcards if you're looking for a challenge.
Conclusion: The Importance of Studying SAT Vocabulary
Overall, vocabulary words don't play a huge part on the SAT. That said, you’ll definitely have some questions on both the Reading and Writing section that test your knowledge of SAT words, so it’s important to study those most likely to appear on test day.
The best way to study SAT vocabulary is to make flashcards and use the waterfall method. This ensures you know all the words in your deck and aren’t glossing over any difficult ones.
If you don’t want to make flashcards or don’t have time to study the whole list, however, it’s a good idea to pick out the words you don’t know and study just those. With these, you can either make a smaller deck of paper flashcards or opt for digital flashcards.
No matter how you choose to study SAT vocab words, be sure to test out what you’ve learned in the context of full-length practice tests. Nearly all the words in our list above come from official SAT practice tests, so you’re guaranteed to come across them in some form!

10 noteworthy books for April
Historical fiction, memoirs and fantasy novels are worth your while this month.
Great reads are popping up this month like spring daffodils, including historical fiction about the Roosevelt era and Palm Beach’s high society, stories that explore modern family dynamics in both fiction and memoir form, and a fantastical tale of an impossible voyage.
‘A Short Walk Through a Wide World,’ by Douglas Westerbeke
Aubry Tourvel, the indulged youngest sister in her loving Parisian family, suddenly develops painful convulsions and life-threatening blood loss. It doesn’t take long to work out that relief comes only when she goes somewhere she has never been. With no choice but to leave home and keep moving, spending just days in one place until the bleeding starts again, she quickly learns to navigate a late-19th-century world where she is forever an outsider and perpetually alone. Sharing a shelf with philosophical adventure novels like “ The Midnight Library ” and “ The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue ,” Westerbeke’s debut thoughtfully explores the effects of being forced to live only in the present. (Avid Reader, April 2)
‘The Mango Tree: A Memoir of Fruit, Florida, and Felony,’ by Annabelle Tometich
As a journalist, Tometich knew there would be headlines when her mother was arrested for using a pellet gun to shoot out the car window of a mango thief. She was still surprised, though, by how harshly people judged her Filipina immigrant mother based on skin color alone. The moment is an entry point for Tometich to revisit growing up in a mixed-race household and desperately longing to appear “normal.” The goal of her turbulent formative years was to go unnoticed, whether it was hiding in her room while her parents were scream-fighting or disappearing in the back seat of her best friend’s car as a rotating cast of popular kids sat up front. In seeking to understand the complexity of her mother’s life, Tometich reveals the difficulties that many immigrants and multiracial families face as they try to find a way to belong. (Little, Brown, April 2)
‘American Daughters,’ by Piper Huguley
Huguley’s engaging historical novel reimagines the then-taboo interracial friendship — noted in a 1978 Washington Post obituary — between Theodore Roosevelt’s daughter Alice and Booker T. Washington’s daughter, Portia. These children of American luminaries, who are smart and savvy characters in their own right, share an uncommon connection. As their friendship flourishes, the intriguing women encourage each other through both political and personal tumult. (William Morrow, April 2)
‘Sociopath: A Memoir,’ by Patric Gagne
While earning a doctorate in clinical psychology, Gagne wrote a dissertation examining the relationship between sociopathy and anxiety, a subject with which she was intimately familiar as a sociopath herself. From childhood, she was at a loss to explain why people were uncomfortable around her; she only knew she didn’t understand emotions like fear, guilt or empathy. The inner drive to experience such feelings led her down a path that included lies, criminal behavior and violence. Her studies gave her a diagnosis but little hope: The consensus among late-20th-century psychologists was that there was no treatment, nor the possibility of a normal life. Yet after years of study and therapy, plus the encouragement of supportive family and friends, she shares an inspiring story — of building a life filled with love and meaning — while upending the prevailing narrative of sociopaths as monsters. (Simon & Schuster, April 2)
‘A Sweet Sting of Salt,’ by Rose Sutherland
Jean is a midwife in an 1830s Canadian coastal village when a mysterious woman shows up during a storm, uncommunicative and in labor. After Jean assists with the birth, her neighbor Tobias arrives, explaining that the woman is his Gaelic wife, Muirin, who doesn’t speak at all. During the following week, Jean stays with the new mother, secretly teaching her English while becoming suspicious of Tobias’s intentions. When their friendship turns into something deeper, Jean plans an escape, but she fears that her actions may be putting Muirin and her baby in more danger. Sutherland’s atmospheric, feminist retelling of the selkie wife folk tale is a mesmerizing debut. (Dell, April 9)
‘The House of Broken Bricks,’ by Fiona Williams
Tess moved from her Jamaican community in London to the English countryside, where her husband, Richard, grew up, to raise their twin boys — Max, who presents as White, and Sonny, who presents as Black — in a place where they could muck about in nature. Struggling to find happiness after a great loss, Tess ignores racial slights and devotes herself to cooking Caribbean food, while Richard immerses himself in his winter garden, avoiding difficult conversations. Max can talk only with Sonny about his feelings, although everyone can sense the family is suffering. Like Richard’s plants, only the hardiest of people can endure a desolate winter, but spring’s warmth and light might bring what the family needs for healing and growth. (Henry Holt, April 9)
‘A Better World,’ by Sarah Langan
Langan’s satirical observations shine in this dystopian thriller set in a wealthy enclave where something sinister lurks under a glittery surface. After climate devastation fueled chaos, the only safe places to live are guarded company towns like Plymouth Valley, where the Farmer-Bowens hope to be accepted as residents. An underpaid Environmental Protection Agency employee, Russell has just gotten a one-year trial job offer that could save his family from financial ruin and reverse their deteriorating health issues. Linda gives up her job as a doctor, and they relocate to a three-story colonial and send their two teens to the neighborhood’s blue-ribbon school. Valley residents are tightknit, though, and social breakthrough is difficult until Linda accepts a job offer at a clinic supported by local power brokers. The family’s new stature opens doors but also prompts questions about how far Valley natives might go to justify their wealth and isolation. (Atria, April 9)
‘The Limits,’ by Nell Freudenberger
As covid sweeps the globe, Pia’s mother sends the 15-year-old to New York City to live with her cardiologist father, David, and his new young wife, Kate, a teacher. To protect Pia and newly pregnant Kate from covid exposure, David takes an apartment near the hospital where he works, leaving his daughter to make sense of the upheaval brought by her parents’ divorce. Meanwhile, Kate struggles to connect with a teenager — and questions her own ability to raise a child — while leading online classes for high-schoolers who are facing their own family dramas. Freudenberger ably captures the sense of uncertainty and displacement during the height of the pandemic, matching the inner confusion of major life changes with the outer turmoil of a world in crisis. (Knopf, April 9)
‘The Beautiful People,’ by Michelle Gable
Fluffy and fun, Gable’s novel takes readers on a whirlwind tour of the lives of Palm Beach jet-setters through the eyes of fictional former debutante Margo Hightower. Desperate for money after a broken engagement and a family scandal, Margo takes a job as an assistant to photographer Slim Aarons and is thrust into the world of uber-wealthy scions with names like Vanderbilt, Kennedy and Rousseau. As a friendship develops with heiress and up-and-coming fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer and her seemingly devoted husband, Peter, the divide between work and play starts to blur. When lines are crossed and secrets are revealed, Margo must rely on her skills to forge a path for her future. (Graydon House, April 16)
‘Honey,’ by Victor Lodato
Even at her age — “eighty plus a dash of salt” — Honey Fasinga still does herself up before leaving the house, donning one of a number of outfits from years ago that still fit her: the green silk custom creation with marigold cuffs; a Gucci day dress with ribbon trim; a militantly angular Vivienne Westwood suit. Half a century earlier, Honey fled the world of organized crime to settle in Los Angeles, where she created a fashionable, art-filled life. Honey has always told herself she was different from her now-deceased parents and brother and is convinced she has moved past old grievances. But as she returns home and is faced with a seemingly drug-addled grandnephew, old friends turned enemies and a carjacking to boot, she’s no longer sure whether she is looking for absolution or reprisal. Lodato skillfully brings to life a haunting and irresistible character who is as complex as she is charming. (Harper, April 16)
