Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join a kenya safari.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

When's the best time to go on a safari in Kenya?

Generally speaking, January, February and June to October are the best times to go on safari in Africa. This is the dry season, so animals tend to come out into more open spaces in search of water, making them easier to spot. However, you’ll be able to spot animals year-round and enjoy fewer crowds if you travel outside peak season.

Am I guaranteed to see animals?

We can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, but you’d have to be seriously unlucky to see no animals at all. On our safaris, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of species and your expert driver and local leader will be on hand to point you in the right direction (literally).

What are the "Big Five"?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for a safari in Kenya?

Loose, light layers in neutral colors are the best attire for a safari (dark colors will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our  ultimate Africa packing guide . 

What type of food will be served on a safari in Kenya?

It depends on the trip style you've chosen. On our Basix trips, you’ll have a cook traveling with you who'll whip up a variety of local and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there'll be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. One thing's for sure: you definitely won't be going hungry on safari!

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have private bathrooms with flushing toilets and showers with warm water.

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water).

Will I be able to use my cell phone on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however, internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t think twice about emails and social media when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

The icons of Kenya lie in the Great Rift Valley. The Great Rift Valley is where the wild things roam. Go on safari for a chance to spot the Big 5 (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard). If you can’t make it during the great migration, not to worry,  safaris in the Masai Mara are excellent any time of year . Visit the local watering holes of Lake Bogoria and Lake Naivasha to have a splash with hippos and elephants at play. Spend the day following wildlife on the savannah of the Maasai Mara. No safari would be complete without an iconic African Sunset. Watch as the glowing ball of light sets majestically against the savannah grasses.

The Maasai people of this region conjure up images of an iconic African people. Their tall statures and brilliant textiles combined with ornate jewelry create an all-knowing look of savannah wisdom. These people live off of the milk and blood of their herds. Known for their fierce warrior culture, they used to kill lions as a test for manhood. Today, the focus is on conserving their environment. It is difficult to coexist with such ferocious beasts like the lion and the destructive elephant, but steps are being made every day to enjoy cohabitation on this landscape. The wealth of the Maasai are measured by their herds of cattle.

If climbing is what you are after then you’ve come to the right place. Mt Kenya is a famous climbing mountain,  offering multi-pitch climbing routes  to satisfy your crag desires. With multiple routes up Mount Kenya there is something for everyone.  Climb the multi-pitched routes on  Nelion Peak . Or circumnavigate Africa’s second largest peak via the  Mount Kenya Summit Circuit.

Some of the strangest fauna and flora surround Mt Kenya. Like a clash between high desert and cool, misty jungles the plant life surrounding this peak makes you feel as if you’ve stepped onto another planet. Born of fire and rock, the soil here is rich in volcanic nutrients. Some of the more unique plants include a cabbage tree that holds water or a plant that looks like an ostrich tail. Everywhere you look you’ll feel as though you are in another world as you make your way to the base of this challenging peak.

Kenya is also an excellent place to partake in volunteer trips.  Climb Mount Kenya for charity , or  volunteer in Kenya with Adventure Alternative’s sister enterprise Moving Mountains . Do good during your time in Kenya and give back to her charming people in a meaningful way.

When most people think of Kenya, they picture a sprawling savannah stuffed to the brim with zebra and lions. However, Kenya is surprisingly diverse. Mombasa, Kenya’s second largest city is much easier to navigate than the mighty Nairobi. Although much of the city itself seems to be falling apart, just off the coast life flourishes. For the best marine national parks try to dive or snorkel around Watamu and Malindi or the island of Wasini. The coastal island that stretch northwards are well wort a visit. Beaches and marine life aside, these islands also house archeological ruins of all kinds. There are mosques forts and tombs to be discovered. If wandering around in this region, do take care to dress conservatively, as the coast is predominately Muslim.

An overlooked area by travelers is Western Kenya. Boarding the mighty Lake Victoria, this region of Kenya is covered with lush jungle greenery. Rolling green hills give way to dense pockets of jungle in this agricultural hub. One can spend days discovering the fantastic scenery and people without coming across a single tourist. Spend some time in the laid back town of Ksumu along the coast of Lake Victoria. Originally built along a train line, this town is a start contrast to the busy hubs of Niarobi and Mombasa.

7 Epic Adventure Activities In Kenya

From rock climbing in Hells Gate to camping in Masai Mara, these are just some of the best  adventure activities in Kenya .

With its breath-taking landscape, world-class safaris and wildlife spotting as well as a beautiful coastline, Kenya is an incredible destination with a lot to offer.

While a big part of the tourism industry is focused on luxury and high-end tourists, I had the chance to explore the country together with a friend on a low budget.

Rock Climbing In Hells Gate National Park

Camping in the maasai mara triangle, hiking mt. ololokwe, boat tour on lake naivasha, hiking mount kenya, safari in amboseli national park, exploring lamu island, take your pick – adventure activities in kenya.

I spent about one month backpacking Kenya and had a fantastic time experiencing the country to its fullest. Let me show you all the adventurous activities you can do when traveling around Kenya!

Hells Gate national park is located right next to Lake Naivasha and therefore only a few hours’ drive from Nairobi.

While you can and should go on a game drive around the park (contrary to most big Kenyan national parks, you’re even allowed to leave your car and go for a walk), the main reason to visit Hells Gate is its rock climbing opportunities.

You can hire a guide and all gear just outside of the park, and even beginners (such as me!) can give it a try.

From the top of the rocks you’ll enjoy fantastic views on the African countryside and you can even spot some giraffes and zebras from up there. Incredible experience, give it a try!

The Maasai Mara Triangle is supposed to be one of the best safari parks of the world and therefore a must-visit when traveling Kenya.

Unfortunately, there are only a few hotels in the triangle, which are high end and therefore very expensive (averaging $700 a night!).

Update from a reader -Regarding the Mara Triangle, actually I believe you visited the greater Masai Mara as camping in not allowed in the Mara triangle. Very few lodges and camps are found there and as you say on high end. The rest of the Masai Mara has several lodges and camps with varying prices from as low as USD 70.

If you want to visit the Maasai Mara while sticking to a lower budget, your best option will be camping.

There are a few camping areas along the river, where you can reserve a spot online.

Don’t expect any proper camping facilities – you’ll be completely in the wilderness! Therefore, it’s required to hire two armed guards which will sit outside of your tent in the night to protect you – just in case.

Camping in the Maasai Mara was an incredible experience and I never felt closer to nature.

While me and my friend were laying in the tent, we heard lions and hyenas roar outside in the night, just a few meters away from us.

One time in the afternoon, when we had a rest from our game drive, we even got surprised by a confused hippo – Africa’s most dangerous animal – in our camp!

Luckily, we could jump quickly into our car. As you can see, camping in a national park in Kenya is certainly full of surprises and a true adventure – much more fun than staying in a luxurious lodge!

Mount Ololokwe in wild Samburu county is a holy mountain for local tribes in northern Kenya and far off the typical tourist path.

The mountain is a few hours north of the town Nanyuki and reachable by shared van or car. Not many tourists actually know about it (we got told that we’d be the only tourists in the last 3 months!).

We had to be accompanied by armed local guards to protect us from wild elephants and hostile tribes while hiking up the mountain. The hike is quite steep and gets tough at times due to the heat and the elevation, but it’s worth it.

The views from the top were incredible!

Since you probably won’t make it back to Nanyuki before it gets dark, you can camp for one night on top of the mountain.

Just a few hours outside of Nairobi, Lake Naivasha is a perfect getaway from the busy capital.

It’s located close to Hells Gate National Park, where you can go for a game drive and for some rock climbing (see above).

While the landscape around the lake is beautiful, a boat tour on Lake Naivasha is especially exciting due to the thousands of hippos lurking in the water, which will watch your boat carefully to make sure you don’t get too close.

At one point, a hippo actually felt threatened by us and started to chase and attack us – luckily, our boat was faster.

I personally haven’t climbed Mount Kenya on my trip due to time restrictions, but it’s certainly on my bucket list.

The mountain is the second highest mountain on the African continent and according to many people, the experience is supposed to be much better and nicer than the hike to the top of neighboring Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

However, you need to join a guided tour and it will take you a few days to reach the top, giving you enough time go get used to the altitude.

Amboseli National Park is located in the south of Kenya, right at the border of Tanzania.

Thanks to its picturesque location in front of Mount Kilimanjaro, you’ll enjoy fantastic views on Africa’s highest mountain if the sky is clear.

Amboseli is also known for its huge herds of elephants roaming around the park and you’ll have good chances to actually spot the “Big 5” on your game drive .

For cheaper accommodation, stay a little bit outside of the park, there are some nice but budget-friendly lodges.

Lamu Island, located in the north of the country and only a few kilometers away from the Somali border, is far off the typical tourist trail but one of my favorite places in the country.

I spent a few days in the south of the island in the beautiful and cozy resort Kizingo, where I had the beach completely to myself.

Although Lamu was a good place to relax and recover from all the hiking and safaris, there’s more to see and the island has more to offer than only beaches.

I had the chance to go snorkeling in the crystal-clear water and even spotted some rare dolphins.

Make sure to visit Lamu Town – one of the oldest towns in the world!

It’s a journey back in time.

The Muslim influence makes you feel like you’d be in the Middle East rather than in Africa and the traditional town differs completely from your typical East African city.

From relaxing beaches to a unique cultural experience, Lamu Island has it all.

5 Days Mount Kenya Circumnavigation Trek Using Sirimon Chogoria Routes

We were delighted with our Mount Kenya 5 day package. John’s communication was brilliant from our first contact and he was happy to answer any questions. Our guide Michael and the wonderful team of porters were outstanding-experienced, friendly and professional, tailoring the hike to our needs. The food in particular was spectacular. Overall the excursion of a lifetime and great value too-we would not hesitate to recommend this hike.

Masai Mara Camping Safari

Our guide was great and interacted well with the group. He had lots of animal knowledge and found us some great animals. Our transport was a van but it made it there and back and wasn't too bad for game viewing. Plenty of space for the 6 of us. Accommodation is a basic tent with bed and mossie net but was all we really needed. Meals were good and there was always plenty. While the trip is advertised as 4 days, it's only 3. I would have enjoyed having an extra day to spend in the Mara.

Our 5 day Kenya Masai Mara safari was fantastic. Everything was very good. Martin our driver guide, extremely hard-working, knowledgeable and helpful. From airport reception to on time performance all very good. Good company I can recommend.

7 Days, 6 Nights Safari To Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha And Amboseli With Complimentary First Night Accommodation at After 40 Hotel and free airport pickup.

We loved the variety of this tour - safari by vehicle, hot air balloon, bike, boat, and foot. The accommodations ranged from basic to good, so this tour is best for those who don’t need luxury accommodations, which we did not. The food was always very good and plentiful. We had 2 guides - Nathan and Tony, and both were excellent. They were friendly, knowledgeable, patient, and good drivers. The optional tours need to be updated on the description of the tour, as inflation has caused an increase in prices. The hot air balloon safari was $450/pp (a wonderful experience with a nice champagne picnic breakfast afterwards). The Massai village visit was $25/pp. We recommend both. Bring lots of cash for drinks, souvenirs, and tipping. We underestimated and ran out, but our guide made a stop at a bank for us to get more. Good communication and customer service from the tour company as well. Overall an incredible vacation. We will be back in Kenya in the future and would definitely use this company again.

Before you begin your once-in-a-lifetime African adventure, make sure you talk to your physician about recommended travel vaccines and pack strategically with plenty of layers.

You've been dreaming about going on safari in Kenya ever since the credits rolled in "Out of Africa," and now you're ready to embark on the trip of your dreams . To make sure you get the most out of the country's spectacular wildlife and jaw-dropping landscapes, here is the information you'll need, so that the only surprises you'll encounter are ones that you'll love.

An Average Day on Safari

While every accommodation is unique, most camps follow a similar schedule. Led by a wildlife guide, you'll go on at least two game drives per day with other guests for three to four hours per ride. Along the way, you'll stop at picturesque locations to stretch your legs, grab a snack and revel in incredible scenery. In the middle of the day, when predators and other species are hiding in the shade, you'll be in camp relaxing. Expect to take your meals at camp, though dining in the wild is also common. At night, you'll cozy up to a warm fire and mingle with the other guests to share your day's adventures before letting the sounds of the bush serenade you to sleep.

Activities and Extra Costs

Game drives are the crux of most safaris, but there are plenty of other activities for you to enjoy, from guided walks and visits to tribal villages to hot air balloon rides over the Masai Mara or camel safaris in the Northern Frontier. Some activities are included in your daily rate, but "it's always a good idea to know ahead of time what's included in your stay, as many options may come with an additional price tag," says Linda Friedman, CEO of Custom Safaris. Also, keep in mind that you may be charged for park entry fees, laundry, premium liquors and other amenities.

Wildlife-Viewing Opportunities

"Kenya is known not only for its massive concentrations of game but also for its vast open plains. You can spot and track wildlife from a fair distance and there is almost always something to see and some sort of interaction between species," says Andrew Beck, a professional wildlife photographer and a co-founder of Wild Eye, a photographic safari company. There are also certain areas that contain larger concentrations of specific species. If you love elephants, consider Amboseli where herds can reach 100 members or more. And from August to October, the Masai Mara plays host to millions of wildebeest during the Migration, while species like the Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, reticulated giraffe and the gerenuk can only be found in the north.

Guides know all about animal behavior and the area in which your camp is located, as well as the location of recent sightings, dens and kills. Still, they can't make animals appear on cue, so stay open to what the day brings. In the bush, the world can change on a dime; with a little patience, you'll have the time of your life.  

Family  

Taking your child on safari can be one of the best ways to instill a lifelong love of wildlife and respect for the environment, and in the last few years, more companies are enticing families with larger tents or villas and special programs designed with families in mind. As Friedman points out, it's important to ask up front if children are allowed or if there is a minimum age requirement. If your child is very young, you may be required to reserve a private vehicle.  

Photography

A DSLR camera and longer lenses are best for wildlife photography , but if that's not your objective, Beck suggests getting a point-and-shoot with the maximum optical zoom. "Don't even bother looking at the digital zoom feature as this is essentially a crop of the image," he says. It's also a smart idea to bring plenty of memory cards. There is nothing worse than having to delete images from your camera on the fly to make room for your next shot.

When it comes to the bush, safety at any lodging is top priority. Upon arrival, you'll be given all the dos and don'ts and it's important to follow directions. While safaris are safe, Friedman cautions, "These are wild animals, not kittens."

Preparing for Your Safari

Paperwork  You'll need a passport that is valid for at least six months prior to your arrival. Your passport must contain a minimum of two blank pages for stamps. You'll also need a $50 visa . You can apply for a visa online at Evisa.go.ke or you can wait until you arrive at the airport in Kenya.  

Vaccinations

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are no mandatory vaccinations for travel to Kenya though you may be required to get a yellow fever shot if your travels take you through endemic zones prior to your arrival. The agency also advocates being up to date on immunizations for Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies and meningitis. Additionally, you may want to consider pills for malaria. Make sure to speak to your physician about your travel plans to determine what you need. 

Pack enough light casual attire for a long weekend and take advantage of the same-day laundry service (weather permitting) that the majority of camps provide. It's chilly in the morning and evening, but hot in the afternoon, so dress in layers. A good sunscreen is also a must-have, in addition to a wide brim hat and a good pair of polarized sunglasses. And flip-flops are fine for the jeep, but also pack a pair of comfortable sneakers.  

Small commuter planes are the main mode of transport into the bush and all the domestic carriers are sticklers about baggage restrictions. Bags must be soft, no longer than 26 inches and wheel-free, and the total luggage weight per person cannot exceed 15 kilograms (33 pounds), including your carry-on. If you go over the limit, your best-case scenario would be paying a fee, but in a worst-case scenario, you may have to buy a separate ticket for your baggage or wait until there is a plane with space available.

Money Matters

Kenya shillings is the local currency. You can pick up shillings at the airport upon arrival, but U.S. dollars are also widely accepted. Keep in mind, accommodations will accept major credit cards such as Visa or MasterCard (American Express is not as widely accepted) for amenities or gift shop purchases, but you should bring cash for gratuity as well as extras, such as cultural visits to local villages or souvenirs like handmade jewelry or other trinkets from local artisans.

Tips are not mandatory, but they are customary. Your guide should be at the top of your list, and according to Friedman, you should plan to pay $15-25 per person per day. If you have a large family, less per person is acceptable. If you want to distribute gratuity to all staff members, most camps have a staff box where guests can leave a gratuity of $5-10 per person per day. When in doubt, ask a manager for advice, Friedman says.

The beautiful african paradise islands that most tourists don’t know about.

Africa's 'almost famous' paradise islands

A couple of African paradise islands have been on the radar of avid world travelers for some time.

Mauritius and the Seychelles are bucket list honeymoon locations, while the Canary Islands and Tunisia’s Djerba island rank as two of the most popular holiday destinations in all of Africa.

For those who want to avoid the crowds and discover someplace new, Africa also boasts some “almost famous” islands with awesome beaches, unique wildlife, and amazing outdoor adventures on both land and sea.

Here are eight of those places:

Nosy Be (Madagascar)

Nosy Be means “Big Island” in the Malagasy language. Which is more than a little ironic when you realize it’s tiny compared to neighboring Madagascar. But the paradise island does loom large when it comes to nature.

Lokobe Natural Reserve on the island’s south side preserves an ancient rainforest and various creatures that call it home, from the turquoise-colored panther chameleon and the Madagascar owl to several lemur species including endangered black lemurs and tiny mouse lemurs. Best way to explore the park is via pirogue canoe with a local guide.

The island’s warm tropical offshore waters offer Nosy Tanikely Marine Park and 20 other dive sites, plus a chance to swim with the whale sharks that migrate through the area in October and November.

Nearly all of Nosy Be’s hotels lie along white-sand strands on the west coast, including the family friendly Andilana Beach Resort and the rustically romantic Le Grand Bleu .

Getting there: The easiest way to reach Nosy Be from outside the region is Ethiopian Airways and its four-hour, nonstop flights from Addis Ababa.

Bazaruto (Mozambique)

The largest island in a five-island tropical archipelago of the same name along Mozambique’s Indian Ocean coast, the Ilha do Bazaruto is renowned for towering sand dunes, wild beaches and upscale resorts.

Shellfish Bay on the island’s windward side shelters one of East Africa’s most spectacular beaches, a crescent of white sand framed by 100-meter dunes.

As the cornerstone of Bazaruto Archipelago National Park , the island is also home to a wide variety of indigenous wildlife, from the crocodiles and wading birds that frequent freshwater lagoons on the leeward side of the coastal dunes, to five types of sea turtle, East Africa’s largest dugong population, and rare marine species like the guitarfish and rhino ray.

Bazaruto Island Resort , the island’s top digs, can arrange scuba diving and snorkeling, sailing on traditional dhow boats, guided 4x4 wildlife safaris, sandboarding on the dunes and other outdoor activities.

Getting there: A 90-minute nonstop flight from Johannesburg to Vilanculos on Airlink and then a one-hour boat transfer.

Lamu (Kenya)

Swahili culture survives and thrives on this island off Kenya’s northeast coast. The waterfront crowded with triangular-sailed dhows, Lamu Town resonates with the sound of craftsmen building new wooden boats and the call of the muezzin from ancient mosques.

A small but interesting museum and ancient fort are the town’s main attractions, but visitors can also arrange a half-hour boat ride to explore the ruins of 15th-century Takwa on nearby Manda Island. Lamu’s best beaches are on the island’s windward side, around a 30–40-minute walk via Shela village.

Stay at Lamu House , a chic little boutique hotel in town, or way out on the beach at Kizingo Eco Lodge .

Getting there: A three-hour bus ride from Malindi to Mokowe, and then a short water taxi to Lamu Town; or a 80-minute flight from Nairobi on JamboJet .

Fogo (Cape Verde)

Black sand beaches, twisted lava landscapes, and a notorious active volcano set this Cabo Verde island apart from its neighbors off the coast of West Africa.

Rising more than 9,000 feet (2,800 meters) above the coast, Pico do Fogo has blown its top 30 times since the 15th century when Portuguese explorers became the first humans to set foot on the island. A local guide is recommended for the 4.5-mile (7.8 km) trek to the summit.

Nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status, São Filipe with its cobblestone streets, brightly painted sobrado homes is one of Cape Verde’s oldest and best-preserved Portuguese colonial towns.

One of the mansions provides a nostalgic venue for the Hotel Savana with its sea views and swimming pool. Or crash at Casa Marisa in the volcanic caldera.

Getting there: A half-hour flight from Praia on Cabo Verde Airlines .

Réunion (French Overseas Territory)

A French possession since 1638, Réunion lies in the southern Indian Ocean around 420 miles (680 km) east of Madagascar and not far from Mauritius. With coconut palms, sugarcane fields and a Creole dialect, the island feels more like the French Caribbean than Africa.

The island is ringed by more than 20 miles (30 kilometers) of beaches, ranging from popular urban strands like white sand Plage de L’Hermitage to the more secluded, black sand Plage de l’Etang Sale .

The rugged volcanic highlands can be explored on numerous hiking trails, while down at the coast, Saint-Denis and other towns offer excellent French cuisine, live Creole music, and stylish oceanfront hotels like the Blue Margouillat .

Getting there: Four airlines offer nonstop service (11-12 hours) from Paris Orly to Réunion. There are also flights from Johannesburg, Mauritius and Antananarivo.

Elephantine (Egypt)

Rising in the middle of the River Nile at Aswan, this elongated island is said to derive its name from being shaped like an elephant’s tusk. Despite the appearance of modern hotels and restaurants in recent decades, much of Elephantine still looks, acts and feels like rural Egypt.

Ruined temples dating to around 3,200 B.C.E. — and an ancient stone nilometer for measuring the river’s water level — reflect the island’s importance during pharaonic times. Located inside a traditional Nubian-style home, the Animalia Museum offers insights on Elephantine’s human and natural history.

Yet the coolest thing about Elephantine is lounging in a waterfront café, on the balcony of a guest house, or your room at the island’s Mövenpick Aswan Resort , watching wooden sailing feluccas flit up and down the Nile and gazing at Aswan’s exotic skyline on the other side of the river.

Getting there: Felucca or ferry from the Aswan waterfront after a domestic flight on Egypt Air .

Bissagos Islands (Guinea-Bissau)

Pristine mangroves, mudflats, savannah grasslands, tropical forest and surprisingly diverse animal life (that includes rare ocean-going hippos) earned the archipelago UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status in 1995. Bissagos should be on the bucket list of every serious birder.

Overnight accommodation is sparse and largely limited to the Ilha de Bubaque, where modest abodes like Cajou Lodge and EcoLodge Ponta Anchaca cater to travelers making landfall on the remote outer edge of Africa.

Getting there: If you’re not on a cruise ship, the only way is via water from Bissau city, a journey that can take anywhere from 90 minutes to six hours depending on the boat.

Pemba (Tanzania)

It doesn’t exude the exoticism of nearby Zanzibar, but the large Tanzanian isle outshines its neighbor when it comes to pristine, palm-shaded beaches and out-of-this-world diving.

Pemba’s 30 plus dive sites are celebrated for its healthy coral gardens with an abundance of macro creatures, sheer underwater walls that plunge into the black, and offshore waters with large pelagic fish and migrating humpback whales in July and August.

Afro Divers and Dive 360 Pemba at Manta Resort — both of them at Pemba’s north end — are PADI certified.

Getting there:   Slow, intermittent ferries from Zanzibar, Tanga and Dar es Salam, or a 25-minute puddle jumper from Zanzibar on FlightLink airlines.

Day 1 Nairobi

Arrive at any time. Arrival transfer is included.

Day 2 Nairobi/Lake Nakuru National Park

Depart early for Lake Nakuru, known for harbouring flocks of pink flamingos and a rich variety of bird species. Arrive at our safari lodge inside Lake Nakuru National Park in time for lunch, and seek out the resident rhinos on a late afternoon wildlife drive.

Meals included:

Set out on morning and afternoon safaris through the picturesque park, searching for buffalo, impalas, lions, and more; and drive along the salty shores of Lake Nakuru to discover a mind-boggling variety of birds.

Day 4 Lake Nakuru National Park/Lake Naivasha

This morning attend a talk given by a representative of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS)—a government institution dedicated to managing the country’s wildlife—about the issues surrounding poaching and wildlife conservation. Later head south through the Great Rift Valley to Lake Naivasha, a large freshwater lake surrounded by grassy banks and olive trees. Cruise the lake on a boat, watching for hippos and buffalo; and peer through your binoculars to spot lovebirds, ibis, and the African fish eagle. Step ashore at Crescent Island—a peaceful wildlife sanctuary located in the middle of the lake— and enjoy a guided stroll in search of wildebeest, zebras, and giraffes.

Day 5 lake naivasha/masai mara.

Travel to the legendary Masai Mara National Reserve and settle into our comfortable tented camp, located in the heart of the reserve. Head out for an afternoon safari through vast, acacia-dotted plains, driving past throngs of wildebeest, zebra, and giraffes; and keep an eye out for lions, elephants, and the rest of the African “big five.” In the evening, relax at the camp and enjoy scenic views of the rolling plains.

Day 6 Masai Mara

Venture out on an early morning safari to track the animals that traversed the savanna during the night. View ungulates like Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles, topi and eland antelopes—as well as their stealthy predators—at one of their most active times of the day. Continue your exploration on a late afternoon safari, discovering the timeless landscapes of Masai Mara.

Day 7 Masai Mara/Nairobi

Witness a breathtaking sunrise over the savanna during your final safari in Masai Mara, and head back to Nairobi. Stop en route at Café Ubuntu, a G Adventures–supported Planeterra project that trains and employs local women and mothers of children with disabilities. Café Ubuntu is an oasis with delicious organic food, hospitable staff, and a relaxing atmosphere based in Maai Mahiu. It is a beacon for tourists who drive through the area each year on their way to the famous Maasai Mara conservancy. Learn about how the initiative empowers the community, visit the craft centre to meet some of the women who create the wares sold there, and then sit down for a delicious farm-to-table lunch. Options range from breakfast tacos, soups, and salads, to freshly made pizzas, curry dishes, and burritos.

Day 8 Nairobi/Arusha

Fly to Arusha, gateway to the Serengeti and the northern parks of Tanzania, and settle into your lodge.

Day 9 Arusha/Lake Manyara National Park

This morning, make your way to Mto wa Mbu village, a vibrant settlement of Tanzania’s diverse tribal groups. Take a guided walk through the village, visiting the local market and meeting artisans in their workshops; then sit down for a traditional lunch with a local family. Continue to the Rift Valley escarpment and settle into our safari camp, located at the edge of Lake Manyara National Park. Set out on our first safari drive to discover East Africa’s legendary wildlife, searching for lions, elephants, hippos, giraffes, and more.

Day 10 Lake Manyara National Park/Serengeti National Park

Travel through the breathtaking Rift Valley en route to our safari camp in Serengeti National Park. Enjoy a stop along the way at the Olduvai Gorge Museum and Visitor’s Centre—located near the site where National Geographic archaeologists Louis and Mary Leakey discovered early hominid fossils and stone tools in 1960. From here, continue to the world-famous Serengeti National Park and head out on a late afternoon safari drive across the Serengeti Plain, keeping an eye out for grazing giraffes, lounging lions, and herds of antelope in the golden light.

Day 11 Serengeti National Park

Immerse yourself in the splendor of the Serengeti, one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife reserves. Discover the park’s iconic creatures when you set out in a 4x4 on morning and afternoon safaris through the golden grasslands. With luck, spot all of Africa’s “big five”—lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. Later, visit the Serengeti Wildlife Research Centre, and enjoy a talk by one of the visiting researchers.

Day 12 Serengeti National Park/Ngorongoro

Depart from the Serengeti early and travel across the vast savanna to the Ngorongoro Conservation area. Spanning more than 20 kilometres in diameter, the Ngorongoro Crater is the largest non-flooded caldera in the world and is inhabited by some 25,000 animals. Set out on a full-day safari drive into the Ngorongoro Crater and observe the biodiversity and resident wild animals in this incredibly important location to the conservation and protection of global wildlife. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the heart of the world’s largest caldera surrounded by Ngorongoro’s flora and fauna. Then, travel to our accommodations in Pembeni for dinner and a relaxing overnight stay in a pristine wilderness setting.

Day 13 Ngorongoro/Arusha

Leave Ngorongoro behind this morning and travel from our lodge in Pembeni to a Maasai village. Here, we learn about the G Adventures–supported Clean Cookstoves Project, dedicated to providing clean-burning cookstoves to Maasai communities throughout Tanzania. Enjoy a presentation by a Maasai woman on the impact of the project, and take a guided tour of the village, visiting traditional homes or bomas and helping build a new stove. Continue to Arusha stopping en route for lunch. Spend the remainder of the day in the safari capital city of Tanzania, at your own leisure.
