SINGAPORE – SMRT station manager Faiz Abdullah Altway was preparing to close Canberra MRT station at around 12.45am on Dec 6, 2022, when he found a boy, aged eight or nine, crying near a staircase.

The child had missed his stop after falling asleep on the train, and had neither a phone nor money. His parents, whose contact numbers were the only ones he could remember, were overseas at the time.

Mr Faiz called for a taxi to take the boy home and even accompanied him on the journey. When they arrived at the boy’s home in Yio Chu Kang at around 1.30am, his grandmother, who had been waiting anxiously by the door, exclaimed in relief and thanked Mr Faiz repeatedly.

“As a father myself, I wanted to make sure the boy got home safely and I did what I could to help,” he told The Straits Times on Monday.

Mr Faiz was one of 25 winners at the Singapore Tourism Awards 2023, which recognises the efforts of individuals and organisations in delivering outstanding experiences and showing enterprise excellence.

Mr Faiz, who won the Customer Service Excellence for Transport award, said: “I’m very happy to receive this award on behalf of all my colleagues. Much of what we do is often not in the limelight, so it feels nice to be recognised.”

This year’s awards had 90 finalists in three broad categories – customer service excellence, experience excellence and enterprise excellence.

Former Marina Bay Sands (MBS) president and chief executive George Tanasijevich received the highest accolade – Lifetime Achievement for Outstanding Contribution to Tourism.

He oversaw the development of MBS and supported Singapore’s efforts in curbing the spread of Covid-19 by having the integrated resort serve as a stay-home notice designated facility.

“Mr Tanasijevich also led discussions with the Singapore Government on MBS’ $4.5 billion expansion plans, which include an all-suite hotel tower and live entertainment arena,” his award citation said.

The Singapore Tourism Board introduced a new award this year – Outstanding Wellness Experience award, which went to Xiu Nature Connections, a business tapping Singapore’s green spaces to provide forest bathing experiences. Forest bathing is a relaxation method practised in the midst of greenery.

Other noteworthy recipients include Mandai Wildlife Group, which was recognised for its conservation and sustainability efforts. It achieved an 80 per cent reduction in single-use plastics across its parks and converted its in-park trams and buggies to run on electricity.

Ion Orchard was recognised for providing an outstanding shopping mall experience with its seasonal physical displays, live performances and workshops to engage customers.

Singapore Tourism Board launches SingapoRewards to showcase hidden gems and new perspectives

Incentive programme rewards eligible travellers with diverse and unique experiences

Singapore, 7 March 2023 – The Singapore Tourism Board has launched SingapoRewards , a new programme that offers complimentary experiences in Singapore for international visitors. This programme will run through 2023, and will provide visitors with an opportunity to try one of nearly 40 new or “off-the-beaten-path” experiences in Singapore for free.

From 7 March 2023, eligible short-term visitors to Singapore can redeem a free experience from a specially selected list of SingapoRewards activities. Many of these experiences will showcase less-well-known places of interest or provide access to unique, exclusive experiences. Collectively, these experiences will offer new perspectives of Singapore – even to returning visitors. Redemptions and bookings can be made on the VisitSingapore app or SingapoRewards microsite.

Keith Tan, Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Tourism Board , said, “Tourism has returned strongly to Singapore since our borders reopened fully last year. As more international travellers return, we want to enhance their experience of Singapore by introducing them to hidden gems that are unique to our country. By focusing on innovative experiences, SingapoRewards also provides a platform for local businesses to launch and test new products and offerings. I invite all visitors to explore our city’s diverse offerings through SingapoRewards, and to share their positive experience with others.”

A better way to holiday in Singapore

SingapoRewards was successfully piloted from Oct 2022 to March 2023 in Australia, India and Indonesia. With the full global launch, visitors can look forward to different activities to suit their interests and itineraries. These are curated across various precincts and categories:

·       Novelty and excitement: Explore picturesque precincts through unique tours such as Historical Singapore Bike Tours and Bugis, Waterloo and Kampong Gelam Instagram Walking Tour.

·       Food and dining: Savour local culinary delights on board the Singapore River Dining Cruise as you explore the island-city’s history, or discover the origins of Singapore Dry Gin at the Brass Lion Distillery Tour .

·       Sustainability: Enjoy eco-friendly activities such as the Pleated Bag Making Workshop , learn about aquatic husbandry and conservation at S.E.A. Aquarium + Behind The Panel Guided Tour , or take an inside look at one of the world’s best airports through the Jewel Connection: Changi Airport & Jewel Changi Walking Tour .

·       Wellness: Find an oasis of calm at the Singapore Flora Heritage Room Diffuser Workshop or get a refreshing workout at the Aqua Spinning Workout Class .

Suen Tat Yam, founder of Monster Day Tours said, “We designed The Jewel Connection: Changi Airport & Jewel Changi Walking Tour to offer a rare insider look at one of the world’s best airports. Since the SingapoRewards campaign piloted in October 2022, we’ve received such positive feedback on the tour that we can’t wait to roll it out to more visitors.”

Founder of Brass Lion Distillery, Jamie Koh shared, " Brass Lion Distillery is Singapore’s first full-fledged micro-distillery producing premium handcrafted spirits. Brass Lion is proud to welcome international visitors into our home. With our Distillery Tour, participants will be able to take a behind-the-scenes look at our process and enjoy a guided tasting flight of our flagship gins. Brass Lion aspires to put Singapore on the map for gin lovers, so we appreciate the opportunity to share our approach to gin-making and introduce travellers from all over the world to our uniquely Singaporean spirits.”

You may refer to the full list of experiences here.

Travellers are encouraged to share their experiences on social media with the hashtag #SingapoRewards.

Attraction at Gardens by the Bay received the award for Outstanding Attraction Experience

Avatar: The Experience received the Outstanding Attraction Experience award at the Singapore Tourism Awards 2023, in the Experience Excellence category.

The Singapore Tourism Awards honour people and organisations in the industry for providing exceptional experiences and showing business excellence. This award, presented by the Singapore Tourism Board, aims to increase the competitiveness of the Singapore tourism industry by encouraging businesses and individuals to develop standout experiences. Winners are chosen from 90 finalists.

neon Zone 3-Make A Connection_Na’vi Sculpt

All attractions open for business in 2022 were eligible for the Outstanding Attraction Experience award, which honours an attraction that has captured the hearts of tourists and become a local favourite with Singaporeans. The winners were announced on 15 May 2023 and Avatar: The Experience beat some strong competition, with the other nominees including Mandai Wildlife Reserve and Universal Studios Singapore, Resorts World at Sentosa.

Avatar: The Experience

This immersive walkthrough experience at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore is a collaboration between neon, Disney Location-Based Experiences, and James Cameron and Jon Landau ’s Lightstorm Entertainment, and is based on the global blockbuster film Avatar .

Within the location’s iconic Cloud Forest, visitors can explore the alien world of Pandora and discover its bioluminescent environments, mystical creatures, flora, and the culture of its indigenous people, the Na’vi.

Avatar-the-Experience-Singapore-neon

The pandemic highlighted how crucial it is to avoid high-touch surfaces and practise good hand hygiene in general. Contactless technology has been integrated into business activities that formerly relied primarily on direct physical contact and employee participation. Digital interactives that track gestures and detect motion use proximity sensors and cameras. Additionally, digital takeaways (photos) are collected and shared using contactless technology like QR codes.

Avatar: The Experience is a contactless event, from ticket purchases to the experience elements.

Blurring the boundaries between worlds

A technological revolution has begun as a result of the pandemic. Digital and physical (phygital) life has merged into our way of living. People want multisensory, meaningful connections when it comes to entertainment. It is insufficient just to simply watch. Now, attractions are including new tech such as augmented reality, mixed reality, extended reality and virtual reality to immerse guests in a cinematic world.

Avatar-the-Experience-Singapore-neon

The boundaries between the artificial and the natural are blurred in Avatar: The Experience . The actual world of the Cloud Forest is transformed. Cutting-edge digital media, lifelike creature replicas (sculptures and animatronics) placed in custom environments, bioluminescent lighting, and themed music are added to alter reality. The audience is engaged by specially trained docents and puppeteers, bringing visitors and fans even closer to the world of Pandora than before.

The concept of a deep appreciation of the world’s beauty, encompassing biodiversity, wildlife, and human civilization, is at the heart of James Cameron’s Avatar , and “Don’t forget to connect, care, and conserve” are the three C’s communicated to visitors by the docents and puppeteers of Avatar: The Experience . These values also align with Gardens by the Bay’s guiding idea of environmental sustainability.

A sustainable design

The attraction is designed to be a mobile, tourable and accessible experience. Even the animatronic banshee was designed and manufactured to be compact and portable.

The tourable approach replaces conventional turnkey exhibitions that generate a lot of waste. It ensures that big boxes and packaging are saved and reused when the experience moves to its next destination.

In-depth planning is necessary to streamline the creation of a tourable model. In order to consolidate shipments and ship from a single place, vendors and collaborators are found locally and regionally. This has been shown to be economical as well as environmentally responsible in lowering the overall carbon footprint.

neon also recently announced that  Jurassic World: The Exhibition  won the Best Visitor Experience 2022 category at the Access All Areas Conference & Awards.

SINGAPORE: Trishaws have stopped plying the streets of Singapore since June 2023, after the contract of the country's last trishaw operator ended and was not renewed.

The operator, Trishaw Uncle, had run trishaw tours from Albert Mall Trishaw Park on Queen Street since 2010.

Trishaw Uncle executive Tieu Xin Yue told CNA that the company had obtained its licence to operate through a contract with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).

"Prior to the end of our contract term, which (was) last May, we were told that we will have to return the site for other uses," Ms Tieu said on Tuesday (Apr 9).

Trishaw Uncle was the last remaining licensed trishaw operator at the time its contract expired end-May 2023, she added.

STB's director of travel agents and tourist guides Annie Chang confirmed that the site of Trishaw Park at Queen Street was "returned to the relevant agencies for their review on usage of the site".

"There are currently no other trishaw services operating in Singapore," she added.

Ms Tieu said that after Trishaw Uncle was informed it could not continue to use the Queen Street space, it spoke to STB about the possibility of using another site.

Trishaw Uncle shortlisted potential sites in Chinatown, Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay for discussion with STB last year.

But the business was not able to find a suitable place, as it was informed that the shortlisted sites had other uses or that it was not allowed to use the space, said Ms Tieu.

She added that apart from being a site where trishaws can be parked, the company also needs to consider access to tour routes when choosing a site. "It needs to tick all the boxes before we decide that it's a good place," she said.

Trishaw Uncle owned 100 trishaws but scrapped these shortly after its contract ended, as it was unable to find a suitable holding place for them, added Ms Tieu.

The company used to run tours covering popular tourist destinations like Little India, Chinatown, Kampong Glam and the Civic District.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Trishaw Uncle hired about 40 to 50 trishaw riders, most of them on a part-time basis. This dropped to about 20 active riders after the pandemic.

Ms Tieu said the trishaw tours represented Singapore's heritage and were "an icon" of the country.

"If there's an alternative site, of course we will be willing to restart these operations," she added.

STB said: "Many of our local tour operators offer a variety of tours in new and different formats. We are confident that many of these offerings will appeal to both international and local visitors."

Singapore Tourism Awards 2022: 35 individuals and organisations celebrated for outstanding contributions during COVID-19

Singapore, 24 May 2022 – 35 individuals and organisations were recognised this evening at the Singapore Tourism Awards 2022 for demonstrating resilience, innovation and service excellence amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.

Organised by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), and held at the Shangri-La Hotel, the Singapore Tourism Awards presentation ceremony was graced by Mr Alvin Tan, Minister of State for Trade and Industry, and Culture, Community and Youth.

STB Chief Executive Mr Keith Tan said: “The efforts of all the award finalists and recipients spur the entire tourism industry to greater achievements. Their spirit of resilience and creativity will become more important as we emerge from the pandemic to recapture demand and ensure Singapore remains a world-leading leisure and MICE destination.”

There were 81 finalists for the Experience Excellence , Enterprise Excellence , Customer Service , Top and Special Awards categories this year.

11 recipients for Top and Special Awards

10 organisations and one individual were honoured under the Top and Special Awards categories.

One Kampong Gelam and Group ONE Holdings each received a Special Recognition Award for displaying resilience and delivering creative and innovative products and experiences.

  • One Kampong Gelam (OKG) initiated new events and activities to enliven and establish Kampong Gelam as a vibrant cultural district. OKG launched the precinct’s first Hari Raya light-up project in over a decade, with a first-of-its-kind light projection show on the Sultan Mosque. It also transformed and added vibrancy to the precinct with the first official graffiti Hall of Fame in Southeast Asia, by turning construction hoardings into a street art attraction.
  • Group ONE Holdings (ONE) was the first event organiser to pilot an international live sporting event in 2020, with pre-event testing and heightened safe management measures. They shared their experience with other event organisers, paving the way for more events to resume in 2021. ONE continued to hold events safely and successfully, while innovating and expanding their product offerings during the pandemic.

Special Award for Sustainability

  • Grand Hyatt Singapore implemented impactful sustainability initiatives, such as converting food waste into fertiliser and reducing its carbon footprint by installing a gas-powered plant to provide 30% of the hotel’s electricity needs.
  • Marina Bay Sands (MBS), recognised as the first carbon neutral MICE venue in Singapore, leveraged smart technology in its operations to support sustainability. MBS has also commercialised sustainability by incorporating it into their offerings and programmes – for example, by offering sustainability tours.
  • Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) adopted a comprehensive range of sustainability initiatives in areas such as carbon neutrality, waste management, energy efficiency and biodiversity. As a sign of their sustainability commitment, RWS also provided S$10m in funding to the RWS-NUS Living Laboratory to enhance biodiversity conservation in Singapore.

Special Award for Most Exemplary Employer

Far East Hospitality and Marina Bay Sands were each conferred the Special Award for Most Exemplary Employer, for developing and implementing impactful policies to retain and retrain employees during the pandemic.

  • Far East Hospitality formed a dedicated team to train and equip staff with skills beyond their job roles. The organisation also introduced programmes to improve employees’ physical and mental welfare and launched a financial assistance scheme for employees in need.
  • Marina Bay Sands actively encouraged upskilling among employees and implemented initiatives to protect the physical and mental welfare of both employees and their families. Diversity and inclusion are core values in the organisation’s hiring philosophy, and it continued to hire Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

Special Award for Community Care

Marina Bay Sands, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, Trip.com Travel Singapore and Tan Siok Hui from Conrad Centennial Singapore received the Special Award for Community Care , for displaying care and selflessness for the wider community during the pandemic.

  • Marina Bay Sands implemented a wide-reaching international community engagement programme for over 24,000 beneficiaries across various segments with different needs. These efforts alleviated food insecurity, tackled social isolation and promoted disaster resiliency to beneficiaries such as lower-income families, nursing homes, seniors living alone, migrant workers and disadvantaged communities in India.
  • The Fullerton Hotel Singapore displayed its commitment to build a caring and inclusive community via outreach and mentorship programmes. These focused on six key pillars: Women, Youth, Seniors, Community, Heritage and Well-being. The hotel also organised activities around different campaigns such as World Heart Day, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Purple Parade and International Women’s Day, where part of the proceeds from the various donation drives was given to beneficiaries.
  • Trip.com Travel Singapore launched the Pay It Forward campaign which allowed citizens to donate their SingapoRediscovers vouchers. This campaign subsequently inspired other authorised booking partners to provide a similar donation option for the vouchers.
  • Siok Hui displayed exemplary leadership by driving multiple social responsibility events at Conrad Centennial Singapore, to help the less fortunate. She also demonstrated selflessness by volunteering her time at various local non-profit organisations, even outside of her working hours.

Food at Dabao Singapore.

Meet the Rising Star of the Bay Area’s Singaporean Dining Scene

Emily Lim started her pop-up Dabao Singapore during the pandemic. Four years later, she was named a semifinalist in the James Beard Awards.

It wasn’t until Emily Lim got married that she realized her James Beard nomination for the Emerging Chef award might not be a fluke. People gave speeches at her reception, and she felt emotional as friends and family spoke about the community she’s built for Singaporeans in the Bay Area. Although the U.S. Census Bureau cited a 139 percent increase in Singaporeans living in California between 2010 and 2020, it’s still not easy to find even iconic Singaporean dishes such as laksa in the region. Through her celebrated pop-up Dabao Singapore , Lim is out to change that.

And she’s already well on her way having taken over a SoMa pop-up space and with plans to headline an upcoming food festival later this spring. Her food, including her popular curry puffs, is even available at Chase Center. Over the last four years, Dabao Singapore went from a COVID-era cottage business to a James Beard Award-nominated pop-up phenomenon faster than just about any other food project in the Bay Area. “I was not expecting the nomination at all,” Lim says. “There are so many talented chefs out there, and I’m just doing my own little meal-kit thing from when I started.”

She’s a bit modest. Harkening to the Singaporean food stalls, or hawker centers, that she grew up visiting with her friends, Lim has leaned into putting high-quality chile crab with butter noodles and kueh bingka front and center. She’s even partnered with the Singaporean Tourism Board to cater events in the Bay. Her laksa, unlike those that use a premade laksa paste — arguably the equivalent of instant ramen, in her mind — involves about 21 ingredients, resulting in a seafood curry that diners say transports them back to Singapore. The flavors and spices get muted by some American restaurants’ preparations, but Lim wants to show diners that a noodle dish from Southeast Asia can be just as rich and luxurious — and expensive — as a noodle dish from Italy.

Food from Dabao Singapore.

Lim started learning those skills in 2014 when she interned at San Mateo’s All Spice . She was leaving a marketing job to dive into food and set her sights on working at the Michelin Guide-listed Southeast Asian restaurant. She launched Dabao in 2020 when she and her other industry friends lost their jobs, all of them immigrants left with little funds and few resources. She paid them under the table and worked out of her apartment, only getting everything above board in May 2020. During the pandemic she tried all the different things, focusing on catering and pop-ups instead of meal kits, then back to meal kits as Delta and various restaurant closures circled back around.

Her food came at the right time for a community wanting more. The lack of Singaporean representation in the Bay’s culinary scene leaves many wanting, signified by the uproar caused when Mama Judy Hawker Fare owner Judy Wee promptly closed her popular Alameda restaurant in October 2023. There was Mexican and Southeast Asian fusion outfit IndoMex, too, which quietly ceased operations over the last year or so. Singaporean fine dining project Makan Place quit in 2020. Lion Dance Cafe has championed the cause of decadent laksa with a plant-based menu , but will close its permanent space at the end of April.

Currently, Lim is scouting spaces for Dabao’s first permanent location, hoping to bring one of those Singaporean-style hawker stalls she treasures. The dream, she says, is to open chicken and noodle shops all over the country; she wants Singaporean culture to catch fire online as a way to preserve generations of flavor into the future. It was only in 2024 that she felt like the business had legs, citing the necessity to do this for herself and to help those around her taking so much time. Expanding the business is how she says she can do her part to commemorate Singaporean culture. “Everyone has a degree in Singapore at this point, and the hawkers are dying out,” Lim says. “But the community cares and appreciates the work I put in. That’s when I felt validated.”
