Hailing from Queens, New York, USA, Salt-N-Pepa are a legendary Hip-Hop trio consisting of rappers Cheryl James (Salt) and Sandra Denton (Pepa), backed up by Deidra Roper as their turntablist DJ Spinderella.

Salt-N-Pepa are trailblazers, pure and simple. Arriving at a time when hip-hop was considered a fad and would be finished by the end of the 1980’s, they were a huge part of the genre’s legitimization in the public eye and would go on to have the biggest selling album by a female rap act with their fourth effort “Very Necessary” and also be the first female winners of a Grammy award in a rap category for their single “None Of Your Business”.

James and Denton formed the group as a duo initially, debuting in 1985 with the single “The Showstopper” under the name Super Nature. The single was discovered by Pop Art Records and became a hit on the R&B charts. From the start the duo set about tearing down the standards and stereotypes of how women in Hip-Hop should be, owning their sexuality and empowering themselves through it long before anyone else thought to.

“The Showstopper” garnered the interest of label Next Plateau Records, who signed them for an album release. It was then that the duo became a trio, with Roper joining the group full time as their DJ, and the album followed soon after, entitled “Hot, Cool & Vicious”. It was a modest success initially, with some charting R&B hits in the form of “Tramp” and “Chick On The Side” among others. And then “Push It” happened.

A San Francisco based DJ called Cameron Paul created a remix to the song, the B-side of “Tramp”, and their rise after that was stratospheric. A monster hit on both sides of the Atlantic, the trio were now legitimate pop stars despite James and Denton being barely into their twenties and Roper being a mere 16. However, their star was only going to rise with time.

To this day, the vast majority of female rappers around owe a certain debt to Salt-N-Pepa. They followed up with even bigger hits like “Let’s Talk About Sex” and “Whatta Man”, they won Grammy’s, had platinum albums and singles. They were one of the key acts that legitimised female rappers and they can still rock it live to this day. They’re legends, but you knew that much already, right?

Live reviews

If you are looking to see a classic old school rap show it doesn't get any better than Salt-n-Pepa. No one can quite rile up a crowd like this relentlessly aggressive trio. DJ Spinderella is still pumping out those irresistible dance beats and Cheryl and Sandra spit the rhyme and meter as if it was the only thing they new how to do. However they prove they can do much more than just rap. On their 2014 tour they are constantly engaging the crowd in banter getting them to throw up their hands, yell, dance and sing along. The whole crowd was in an absolute uproar. Also if you go to one of their shows prepare for them to breakout some of their classic 80s dance moves. When they are not busy shooting off a verse they are kicking it free-style moving spontaneously with the beats. And in most occasions they are performing a meticulously choreographed routine with two backup dancers.

DJ Spinderella kept the show flowing: delivering excellent stage talk, building anticipation for the show, mixing tracks together while revving up the audience and providing commentary on the songs they performed live. During there classic track "Whatta Man" they even invited two members from the audience on the stage to dance along to the song. This is just some of the antics that goes on at their shows. On this tour they wowed thousands at outdoor festivals such as Summer Jam and played intimate setting with a backing curtain, mirror ball and soft lights. They seem to thrive an any environment. Wherever you see them, know there is no rap show that will flavor your evening quite like Salt-n-Pepa.

I went to see Salt N Pepa live in Liverpool in October 2017.

At the beginning of the night I was given the option of buying a T-shirt so I could dance on stage with this amazing trio. Salt, Pepa and Spinderella.

I've followed Salt N Pepa since 1988 - the first album I bought of theirs was Salt With A Deadly Pepa at Asda in Rhyl, I later got their earlier album Hot, Cool and Vicious as it wasn't well released over in the UK.

It's very rare we see Salt N Pepa in the UK and so I was so excited and also the chance to get on stage and dance with them.

It was an amazing experience. I got on stage, danced with them and even sang along to Whatta Man with them. They were so nice and friendly and it was an amazing evening. At the end of the song Pepa even told the entire crowd to give it up for me as I'd been singing along in her ear to the song - I was just like WOW!!! OMG!!!

I'd never have believed I would ever meet Salt N Pepa, never mind actually having the chance to dance with them on stage. It was such an amazing night, after that I returned to my seat and enjoyed the rest of the performance waving my banner which said "Salt N Pepa are Hot Cool and Vicious" - a reference to their first album!

I've seen a number of artists in the past but never actually got to meet any of them before and I was so happy and amazed that I got to meet these two ladies who despite the fame still are down to earth and respectful of their fans. Absolute female rap legends - and the whole night of hip hop was something else too but S-n-P were the icing on the cake!

I saw Salt and Pepa last night Friday 9th August at the Indigo at the O2. I've been waiting years to see them so , like the rest of the audience, was excited to see them perform.

The disappointing part is that they came on at 9.35pm & left the stage 50 mins later!!!

In those 50 minutes the dj played a load of old skool tunes which were great but wasted time.

( The dj would have been better as the warm up as the warm up were not great and not for our audience)

Then 1 of the 4 dancers came on and did a Michael Jackson dance. What the hell did that have to do with anything!?? Any few minutes wasted!

So ol' Salt n Papa were actually only singing for about 40 minutes! Everyone stood there paused at the end waiting for an encore only for pepa to say Sorry the O2 has a curfew!

WELL COME ON STAGE EARLIER!!

I also thought id been double conned and that it wasn't Pepa but apparently she's had loads of surgery!

The Positive was that they sung the hits let's talk about sex, push it, shoop, whattaman. (Even 1 of those songs they didn't sing it all!) Shame

Glad I've seen them after all those years but won't ever go again.

Who doesn't love a dose of 90's nostalgia in the form of female led R & B and hip hop? Salt-N-Pepa otherwise known as the artists Cheryl James, Sandra Denton and Deidra Roper have been performing as a collective since the mid-80s and as you can imagine have a wonderful onstage demeanour as a group.

They really know how to pass on these good vibes to the audience and surpass any of their male counterparts when it comes to hyping an audience in time for their classic tracks such as 'Push It'. They know these songs are considered jovial and they do not perform them too seriously, instead they are just as fun as you would imagine. The 90's R & B vibes are fantastic during 'Let's Talk About Sex' as the girls vocally harmonise like complete professionals. The vibes remain positive and free all night and the girls seem to be having as much fun onstage as the fans do watching. They conduct one final singalong to 'Express Yourself' before taking their bows to deafening cheers.

Salt-N-Pepa are the quintessential old school rap and hip hop trio from Queens, New York. They encompass all things hip hop, and have been doing so since they shimmied their way on to the music scene in the late 80s. Cheryl James, Sandra Denton and Deidra Rope have great on stage chemistry, the result of decades as a group together, and they bring this chemistry with them every day, for every song. Their gig is a fantastically nostalgic experience, crammed full of old school 80s and 90s R&B and hip hop gems that have the whole audience dancing on their feet and signing along in full force. The girls’ continuing popularity is proof that hip hop is far from dead: their gig was packed out and the audience was wild with enthusiasm and excitement. The girls had a brilliant rapport with the crowd, thanking their fans and reminding us all of the good old days. They started the party with ‘Let’s Talk about Sex’ and ended with classic ‘Whatta Man’.

I saw Salt-N-Pepa in concert in Boise and although I never saw them live back in the 80s/90s, they put on an amazing show and you can tell they really appreciate their fans! They are just as beautiful and talented as ever! If you have ever liked/loved their music - make sure you go see them live at least once! I can't wait for them to come back to Boise!

Salt-N-Pepa, Hip-Hop Duo That Spoke Up for Women, Tell Their Own Story

In a new biopic for Lifetime, this rap group that got its start in 1980s New York traces its roots and its conflicts.

salt & pepa tour

By Steve Knopper

While selling warranties on washing machines from a Sears call center in Queens, the friends Cheryl James and Sandra Denton came together as a hip-hop duo called Super Nature with the staccato 1985 track “The Show Stoppa (Is Stupid Fresh).” When they first heard it on the radio, they danced together on top of a car. It was just the beginning: James became Salt and Denton became Pepa; the group changed its name and scored 10 hits on the Hot 100, including the ’80s dance classic “Push It” and the ’90s sex anthem “Shoop,” becoming one of the few superstar female acts of hip-hop’s male-dominated golden era.

Fixtures on the I Love the ’90s tour circuit in recent years, the two tell their story in a new Lifetime biopic , “Salt-N-Pepa,” out Saturday, that captures both the rush of touring the world and the conflicts that broke them up in 2002. The group’s longtime D.J., Spinderella, is a character in the film, too, but the biopic doesn’t cover her unsuccessful lawsuit against the duo, which was filed in 2019. The film — which they executive produced along with Queen Latifah and others — begins and ends on a note of unity, showing their 2005 reunion for a VH1 event.

“It was something me and Pep had been shopping around,” Salt said. “Pep called and was like, ‘Girl, we have to do our movie before someone else does.’” Latifah, an old friend, attended meetings where they picked the director (Mario Van Peebles) and screenwriter (Abdul Williams of “The Bobby Brown Story”).

The duo’s “Laverne & Shirley”-style partnership — Salt calm and precise, Pepa loose and boisterous — has endured despite a dispute with the man who helped them get their start, abuse, divorce and plain old Salt vs. Pepa personality conflicts. “We get to tell a 36-years lifetime in like two and a half hours,” Pepa said on a group Zoom interview. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

For a movie about the journey of two women, your producer and manager Hurby Azor, known as “Luv Bug,” plays a big role as a crucial creative force, especially at the beginning. How much did you grapple with the decision to emphasize his character?

SALT Well, the truth is the truth. And Hurby was our guy. He started out being my boyfriend. Being an artist was something that he embodied and transferred over to us. My mom took me to all the Broadway plays, and I took singing lessons and dance lessons, and I did productions at home with my cousins for my aunties. But I didn’t know how to sing. I didn’t play an instrument. When hip-hop came along, it was an opportunity to realize something that I was passionate about — and that was through Hurby.

In an early scene, we see Hurby (played by Cleveland Berto) drilling Pepa (played by Laila Odom) to rap without her Jamaican accent, and Salt (played by GG Townson) caught in the middle. How frustrating were those early days?

PEPA For me, with hip-hop, it was a way of life — we had these park jams where the turntables are getting electricity from the light poles. When Hurby felt that I was the one that will be Pepa, I was thrown in the studio. Hurby had his vision. He wanted it said, done — this kind of way and no other way. I had a difficult time in the beginning, jumping on the beat. Finally, I got it.

SALT Pep always says, “Hurby is our third,” and the chemistry between the three of us was explosive on so many levels. Pep and Hurby used to fight like cats and dogs. It was just an explosion of creativity, of passion, of drama that resonated into a sound, a music, a movement.

The opposites-attract part of your personae, as depicted in the movie, is based on reality?

PEPA One-hundred percent.

SALT I’m an introvert and a little bit of a recluse. What I love about being an artist is the creative process. I love taking something from nothing and bringing it to fruition, I love the response from the audience, but I don’t necessarily love everything that comes along with it — the attention and the chatter. But Pep loves it all.

PEPA I’m an extra-extra-extrovert.

SALT Someone asked us, when we first met, what intrigued us about one another. What made her interested in me is, she was thinking, “Who is this girl that’s not paying me any attention?”

PEPA When we were in college, I was coming in the lunchroom and talking crazy, and I used to see Cheryl in the corner and notice her. It was a chemistry. I was pulled to her.

How much writing did you both do for the script, and did you work separately or together?

PEPA Separately.

SALT It was a lot of rewrites. What I found frustrating — I’m just keeping it real — it was quite a few restrictions when you’re making a movie that I was not ready for.

PEPA Keep it real, Salt!

SALT Legal restrictions, infringing on other people’s rights that people had to sign off on, budget restrictions. What ended up being important was a story of two women in a male-dominated industry who were friends first, who became business partners, who faced a lot of struggles to be heard, to be taken seriously — from the record company to our producer Hurby. We had struggles in our relationships and picked the wrong men over and over.

PEPA We get to take ’em back to college, when it all started and we making $200 per show.

SALT And splitting it.

There was a long period after Salt-N-Pepa’s biggest hits and before Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, when the route for women in hip-hop was limited. How much did you pay attention to that?

SALT I remember that question being asked a lot when there was a big, empty space of no women. I have no idea why, other than this is a male-dominated genre of music and business, and we had to come through a Hurby. There was a time when you had to be vouched for by a camp — a man camp. That’s starting to change through social media and all the avenues that people have to put themselves out there, without belonging to a Jay-Z or whoever.

How many of the original “Push It” video eight-ball jackets, originally designed by your friend Christopher Martin (Play of Kid ’n Play), do you each own?

PEPA The original was stolen backstage at a performance.

SALT I remember it being Brixton, London, and someone breaking in the back door of our dressing room. We came in and the door was open and the jackets were gone.

PEPA Everything else stayed — the pocketbooks, everything.

In the movie, at the time of the split, Salt says, “I have to carve out a space that has nothing to do with you.” Now that you’re back together, is that still important?

SALT Absolutely. When I left, I got to deal with a lot of my own issues, my own demons. It’s healthy when you’re in a group to also be able to maintain your individuality. We were doing this since we were 18, 19 years old, and I did not get the opportunity to figure out who I was apart from Salt-N-Pepa. I felt a lot of disconnect after a while, a lot of resentment, a lot of anger coming from Pep that I did not understand. I felt like I was in a spiral of trying to prove myself to her: “Girl, I got your back. Girl, I’m here for you.” Nothing I did or said could remedy what she was feeling. I feel like there was a great miscommunication.

PEPA [vigorously playing with her hair] The point is, you and I have never talked — you keep telling me how I feel and say and think. When have you and I talked?

SALT I feel resented by you. And your answer —

PEPA It’s a feeling I never got to talk through with her. It’s all her feeling with everything. I’m dealing with her boyfriend being the manager! I’m going through a whole situation, too. We were in it together. When you’re feeling all of this, I’m feeling it, too.

How unified is Salt-N-Pepa these days?

SALT Relationships go through different phases. I know one thing: I love Sandy, and I know that Sandy loves me. It’s difficult to be friends and business partners, and anybody in that position can relate. Sometimes we will be married and sometimes we will be co-parenting the brand and sometimes I will be sleeping on the couch.

PEPA But communication is the key to all successful relationships.

An earlier version of this article misstated the name of the director of "Salt-N-Pepa." It is Mario Van Peebles, not Melvin.

New Kids on the Block to Welcome Salt-N-Pepa, En Vogue and Rick Astley on Massive 'Mixtape' Show

"Just like a mixtape, these shows are going to take audiences through all the emotions," Donnie Wahlberg said in a press release

Take us back to the '90s!

On Monday, New Kids on the Block announced their 2022 MixTape tour, on which the iconic boy band will be joined by girl groups Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue, along with Rick Astley in a nationwide arena tour.

"We had a blast out on the first MixTape Tour in 2019, and can't wait to take it to another level with our fans on the MixTape Tour 2022," Donnie Wahlberg said in a press release. "Just like a mixtape, these shows are going to take audiences through all the emotions."

Wahlberg, who forms NKOTB alongside Jonathan Knight, Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre and Danny Wood, added, "To be able to have Salt-N-Pepa come back and now also have the iconic and legendary Rick Astley & En Vogue join the tour… we could not be more excited. Let's GO!"

The Grammy-nominated group went on a similar MixTape Tour in 2019 alongside Salt-N-Peppa, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson and Naughty by Nature. The 2019 show sold more than 650,000 tickets and grossed $53.2 million, according to a press release.

Sharing the tour news on Instagram, the band wrote, "Getting that confetti ready because we're coming to a stage near you in 2022!! 🎉 We're bringin' our friends @Saltnpepaofficial, @officialrickastley and @envoguemusic along for the ride!"

The groups will travel to 50 different cities across the U.S., including Los Angeles, New York City and Las Vegas, starting May 10, before ending their tour on July 23 in Washington, DC.

The guys of NKOTB have been masters of kicking in the nostalgia. Over the summer, the group announced a new merch line inspired by the vintage bedsheet pattern they had in the early '90s.

"The line is really inspired by the fans," Wood, 52, told PEOPLE in June . "Over the years, we've watched as they've taken those old bedsheets they had as kids and made them into dresses and jackets."

"If you asked the five of us what we thought of those bedsheets back in the day, we would have had some expletives to describe them probably," he added. "But now when we meet fans we always hear them say to us: 'You were my first concert' and 'I used to sleep on you!' Or sometimes they'll say, 'I used to sleep on your face!' if they're trying to be extra funny. So we've now embraced things like those sheets because it's just fun for everyone."

The tour announcement also comes a few weeks after Donnie Wahlberg renewed his wedding vows with wife Jenny McCarthy on their anniversary.

"We just celebrated our 7-year anniversary. And I can't even believe that we've made it seven years," McCarthy said on the Rachael Ray Show last week. "Which is a good thing because it feels like it's only been about a year."

"Everything's still really exciting," she continued, later adding, "We're just lucky in love."

After they renewed their vows, Wahlberg shared a sweet tribute to his wife on Instagram.

"To be blessed with a partner whose goal is to make sure that I love myself more and more each day — is to be truly blessed. Thank you for holding me down, while always holding my kite string and letting me fly," he wrote. "You are my soul mate in every way. My heart is overflowing with gratitude, appreciation and unconditional love, for you. I love you Lady,"

Salt-N-Pepa, Vanilla Ice to Headline ‘I Love the ’90s’ Tour

By Brittany Spanos

Brittany Spanos

Nineties hip-hop and R&B stars are coming together for a packed tour, as the inaugural “I Love the ’90s Tour” kicks off this April and runs through October.

Vanilla Ice , Coolio , Kid ‘N Play and Salt-N-Pepa are just a few of the acts set to play many of their Nineties hits on the tour. Other artists include Biz Markie , Color Me Badd, All-4-One, Rob Base, Tone Loc, Young MC and Kool Moe Dee, the latter recently appearing on Macklemore’s 2015 single “ Downtown .”

The trek technically kicked off with a few shows this spring, but popular demand has turned it into a nationwide trek. “It feels like you’re taking people back to a time in their lives that they really enjoyed,” Cheryl “Salt” James of Salt-N-Pepa explained to USA Today about the tour’s appeal. “It’s just one big Nineties party.”

The “I Love the ’90s Tour” falls in line with many other nostalgic throwbacks to past decades. In February, iHeartMedia hosted the iHeart80s Party in Los Angeles. Culture Club, Billy Idol, and Rick Springfield were among the acts to perform at the show. Last fall, a Nineties-themed festival hit Brooklyn with special guests Pauly Shore, Lisa Loeb and Naughty by Nature.

90s duo Salt-N-Pepa serve up a sweet new beat inspired by Grandma’s Cookies

The iconic hip-hop duo, now grandmas themselves, trade in their mics for mixing bowls in their latest track, ‘Grandma’s Got Treats.’

Grandma’s Cookies, a 110-year-old brand owned by PepsiCo, is debuting a fresh look and campaign.

To celebrate the news, the brand enlisted the help of 90s hip-hop heroines Salt-N-Pepa to record a new song and launched a social media treasure hunt, offering fans a chance to win $10,000.

A remix of the classic nursery rhyme ‘Who Stole the Cookie from the Cookie Jar,’ Salt-N-Pepa’s new track, ‘Grandma’s Got Treats,’ is nothing short of hilarious, featuring lyrics like “She cookin’ real good with her apron tied.”

It’s a far cry from their classic hits like ‘Shoop’ and ‘Push It,’ but somehow, it works.

Sandra ‘Pepa’ Denton commented on the project: “As a grandma myself, it was a no-brainer to partner with Grandma’s because the brand is showing off a fresh, modern take on what it means to be the matriarch. We had a blast creating the remix and got to pack the new verses with personality. I can’t wait for fans to experience our rendition.”

To make things even sweeter, Grandma’s Cookies is treating consumers to weeks of exclusive content and epic prizes. From now through June 19, fans will have the chance to win weekly goodies from Grandma’s cookie jar, including a grand prize of $10,000.

To take part, participants must follow the brand’s Instagram (@grandmascookies), look for hidden cookie jars throughout the brand’s feed and comment on the location of the cookie jar in each post.

“We’re excited to work with Grandma’s Cookies on this campaign because it’s all about embracing a bold, bright attitude while enjoying some treats along the way,” added Cheryl ‘Salt’ James. “We’ve been baking up hits in the studio for over 35 years and our latest remix with Grandma’s is another delicious hit.”

The campaign was developed in partnership with the creative agency Motive.

By the late ’80s, hip-hop was on its way to becoming a male-dominated art form, which is what made the emergence of Salt-N-Pepa so significant. As the first all-female rap crew (even their DJs were women) of importance, the group broke down a number of doors for women in Hip-Hop. They were also one of the first rap artists to cross over into the pop mainstream, laying the groundwork for the music’s widespread acceptance in the early ’90s. Salt-N-Pepa were more pop-oriented than many of their contemporaries since their songs were primarily party and love anthems, driven by big beats and interlaced with vaguely pro-feminist lyrics that seemed more powerful when delivered by the charismatic and sexy trio. While songs like ‘Push It’ and ‘Shake Your Thang’ made the group appear to be a one-hit pop group during the late ’80s, Salt-N-Pepa defied expectations and became one of the few Hip-Hop artists to develop a long-term career. Along with LL Cool J the trio had major hits in both the ’80s and ’90s and, if anything, they hit the height of their popularity in 1994, when ‘Shoop’ and ‘Whatta Man’ drove their third album, Very Necessary , into the Top Ten.

Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandy “Pepa” Denton were working at a Sears store in Queens, New York, when their co-worker and Salt’s boyfriend, Hurby “Luv Bug” Azor asked the duo to rap on a song he was producing for his audio production class at New York City’s Center for Media Arts. The trio wrote an answer to Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick’s ‘The Show’, entitling it ‘The Show Stopper’. The song was released as a single under the name Super Nature in the summer of 1985, and it became an underground hit, peaking at number 46 on the national R&B charts. Based on its success, the duo, who were now named Salt-N-Pepa after a line in ‘The Show Stopper’, signed with the national indie label Next Plateau. Azor, who had become their manager, produced their 1986 debut Hot, Cool & Vicious , which also featured DJ Pamela Green. He also took songwriting credit for the album, despite the duo’s claims that they wrote many of its lyrics.

Three singles from  Hot, Cool & Vicious  – ‘My Mike Sounds Nice’, ‘Tramp’, ‘Chick on the Side’ – became moderate hits in 1987 before Cameron Paul, a DJ at a San Francisco radio station, remixed ‘Push It’, the B-side of ‘Tramp’, and it became a local hit. ‘Push It’ was soon released nationally and it became a massive hit, climbing to number 19 on the pop charts; the single became one of the first rap records to be nominated for a Grammy.

Salt-N-Pepa jettisoned Greene and added rapper and DJ Spinderella (born Deidre “Dee Dee” Roper) before recording their second album, A Salt With a Deadly Pepa . Though the album featured the Top Ten R&B hit ‘Shake Your Thang’, which was recorded with the go-go band E.U., it received mixed reviews and was only a minor hit.

The remix album  A Blitz of Salt-N-Pepa Hits  was released in 1989 as the group prepared their third album,  Blacks’ Magic . Upon its spring release, Blacks’ Magic was greeted with strong reviews and sales. The album was embraced strongly by the Hip-Hop community, whose more strident members accused the band of trying too hard to crossover to the pop market. ‘Expression’ spent eight weeks at the top of the rap charts and went gold before it was even cracked the pop charts, where it would later peak at 26. Another single from the album, ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’, became their biggest pop hit to date, climbing to number 13. They later re-recorded the song as a safe-sex rap, ‘Let’s Talk About AIDS’.

Before they recorded their fourth album, Salt-N-Pepa separated from Azor, who had already stopped seeing Salt several years ago. Signing with London/Polygram, the group released Very Necessary  in 1993. The album was catchy and sexy without being a sellout, and the group’s new, sophisticated sound quickly became a monster hit. ‘Shoop’ reached number four on the pop charts, which led the album to the same position as well. ‘Whatta Man’, a duet with the vocal group En Vogue, reached number three on both the pop and R&B charts in 1994. A final single from the album, ‘None of Your Business’,’ was a lesser hit, but it won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance in 1995. Since the release of  Very Necessary , Salt-N-Pepa have been quiet, spending some time on beginning acting careers. Both had already appeared in the 1993 comedy Who’s the Man?

Where Are They Now?: Salt-N-Pepa

by Thomas Galindo April 11, 2023, 4:30 pm

To this day, Salt-N-Pepa remains one of the most accomplished and respected female rap groups in the history of the genre. Although their decade-long run of plaque-earning albums and chart-topping singles ended over 20 years ago, the timeless essence of their music and their strong influence over female acts today keeps them forever relevant.

Videos by American Songwriter

Dubbed a duo but undeniably a trio, the New York-based group is now immortal in more ways than one. But, their start was as humble as any, and their progress was not linear, as they endured a good deal of turbulence along the way.

Salt-N-Pepa’s Origins

Cheryl James, better known as Salt, and Sandra Denton, better known as Pepa, first met as nursing students at Queensborough Community College in Queens, New York, along with being co-workers at a Sears department store. Eventually, with the help of Salt’s boyfriend-at-the-time Hurby Azor, the duo’s first-ever single, “The Showstopper,” made its way to the radio and eventually landed on the Billboard Top R&B chart.

[RELATED: Salt-N-Pepa to Get Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame]

Eventually bringing their DJ Deidra Roper, better known as Spinderella, into the fold, Salt-N-Pepa attached “The Showstopper” to their debut album, Hot, Cool & Vicious  (1986). This album and each of their next four all achieved either gold or platinum certifications, with their most notable being Very Necessary ‘s 5x platinum status from 1993.

After a 1999 tour and a Best of Salt-N-Pepa album release in 2000, the group officially disbanded in 2002. No longer having contractual obligations to release music, and with Salt fed up with the music industry, there felt like no path forward for the girls.

Years later, though, likely all in a better headspace, the trio began to deliver some of their first live performances since 1999. Hitting the stage for VH1’s Hip Hop Honors show in 2005, the 2008 BET Awards, and the 2009 Ladies of the ’80s concert in Hawaii, the group had officially reunited. In the midst of this, they also launched The Salt-N-Pepa Show on VH1 in 2007, which saw Salt, Pepa, and Spinderella work through issues that initially led to their demise.

Salt-N-Pepa Now

2016 and 2017 saw Salt-N-Pepa take another crack at releasing music, practically two decades removed from their final and most recent studio album, Brand New (1997). Releasing multiple different mixes of their single “Big Girls,” the group showed they still had a little bit of gas left in the tank.

[RELATED: New Kids On The Block Release New Song Featuring Salt-N-Pepa, Rick Astley, and En Vogue]

Additionally, The Salt-N-Pepa Show in 2007 made way for more on-screen adaptations for the group. Co-executive producing with Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa helped launch their own biopic on Lifetime in January 2021, as they brought in actors to play each group member, along with Azor and other celebrity figures from their era.

Although Spinderella had initially left the group in 2019, she would eventually rejoin her two sisters one last time, as they earned their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2022. Their tile is located near the Amoeba Music Store on Hollywood Blvd.

In 2022, Salt-N-Pepa hit the road with New Kids On The Block for their The Mixtape Tour, along with En Vogue and Rick Astley.

Where Are Salt-n-Pepa Members Now?

of Where Are Salt-n-Pepa Members Now?

Salt-N-Pepa is a record-breaking hip-hop band formed in 1985 which won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 1995 for the single “None of Your Business.” It made them the first all-female rap act to bring home this most illustrious accolade in the music industry. With many more Grammy nominations to their credit, the group originally consisted of Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton, later joined by Deidra “DJ Spinderella” Roper in 1987.

The famous trio altered how the world viewed rap and hip hop by dressing in stylish outfits that were a perfect blend of sexy and comfortable, and unabashedly using their honest opinions about sex and men in their lyrics. After releasing five ultra-hit albums, Salt’s decision to leave the band at the top of her career led to Salt-N-Pepa’s official disbandment in 2002. The group came back together in 2007. With the premiere of Lifetime’s biopic ‘Salt-N-Pepa’ based on the band’s many achievements and overall journey, the fans have been intrigued to know about the members’ whereabouts!

Cheryl “Salt” James: Where is She Now?

Right after quitting the band, Cheryl Renee James, better known by her stage name Salt, went back to revive her faith in Christianity, reconciled with Gavin Wray – the father of her daughter, miraculously recovered from bulimia, and even managed to heal herself from “severe depression.” Following Salt-N-Pepa’s reformation in 2007, Salt performed “Shoop,” “Push It,” and “Whatta Man” on October 23, 2008, at BET Hip Hop Awards. The famous rapper and songwriter then featured in the Generation Gospel Exclusive on 106 & Gospel in 2009.

I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has had to overcome while trying to succeed. ~ Booker T. Washington #MondayMotivation #ADashofSalt pic.twitter.com/lzDvsITTgZ — Cheryl 'Salt' James (@DaOnlySalt) October 12, 2020

After over a decade since then, Salt has broadened her reach in the industry by becoming a speaker, writer, and producer. She has been hosting shows and giving stage performances  across the globe, for instance, in Vegas in 2018 and for Halloween and New Years’ in 2019. Salt also did The Mixtape Tour in 2019, which starred New Kids on the Block and other special guests like Tiffany, Naughty by Nature, and Debbie Gibson. The pandemic kept her unusually free in 2020, but she ended the year with a bang by actively promoting Lifetime’s miniseries ‘Salt-N-Pepa.’

Sandra “Pepa” Denton: Where is She Now?

Sandra “Pepa” Denton has remained an indispensable part of Salt-N-Pepa for more than three decades. In 2005, the Jamaican-American hip hop rapper kick-started her career as an actress after being cast on season 5 of VH1’s ‘The Surreal Life’ and then for its spin-off series, ‘The Surreal Life: Fame Games.’ She has also performed in various motion pictures like the musical-comedy ‘Joe’s Apartment,’ HBO’s ‘First Time Felon,’ and made a guest appearance as Officer Andrea Phelan on the HBO’s drama series, ‘Oz.’

salt & pepa tour

VH1 gave her the opportunity to host her own talk-show ‘Let’s Talk About Pep.’ In August 2008, she authored a tell-all memoir by the same name to elaborate on her being molested as a child and her abusive relationships. Since January 2016, she has made recurring appearances on We TV’s reality show ‘Growing Up Hip Hop’ with her daughter, Egypt, as the main cast.

Denton spent the last part of 2020 doing personalized videos on Cameo for her fans along with promoting Lifetime’s biopic on her and her bandmate, Cheryl “Salt” James. She has frequently made headlines for her not-so-happy marriages and previous relationships. But she is a proud mother to a son, Tyran Jr. Denton, born on July 6, 1990, and a daughter, Egypt Jahnari Criss, welcomed on September 2, 1998. Denton shares her children with former partners, Tyran “Tah-Tah” Moore and Anthony “Treach” Criss, respectively.

DJ Spinderella: Where is She Now?

The third part of “The First Ladies of Rap and Hip Hop,” Deidra Muriel Roper is renowned by her stage name Spinderella, which, in fact, is a reference to the character Cinderella. Despite being a prominent part of Salt-N-Pepa, she seldom appeared on the VH1’s ‘The Salt-n-Pepa Show,’ a reality show which aimed to bring the band together. The DJ and rapper worked as a radio personality on the now-defunct KKBT 100.3 in Los Angeles, co-hosting The BackSpin from 2003 to 2006.

salt & pepa tour

Now also a producer, Spinderella has been disc jockeying for a live audience on Instagram and Facebook as ‘ Red Wine Mix’  and has also made multiple clubs across Texas groove to her tunes. As far as a sneak-peak into her personal life is concerned, Spinderella is engaged to her longtime boyfriend, Quenton “Q” Coleman, and is a proud mother to Christy Ray, a skilled DJ. For over 30 years, Spinderella often accompanied her band members for reunion tours and performances until late 2018.

Fans of the artist saw her missing from The Mixtape Tour’s debut show held on May 2, 2019, at U.S. Bank Arena, Cincinnati, Ohio. The very next day, she admitted to having received an email entailing her termination in January 2019. By July of the same year, Spinderella sued  her former bandmates with a federal lawsuit, accusing them of unpaid royalties, given “minimal compensation” over the years, and then abruptly firing her. Salt and Pepa fired back at her, claiming the allegations as purely fantastical.
