Controlled by the engine computer, the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve regulates the engine’s idle speed. It supplies auxiliary air to the air intake pipe bypassing the throttle body. It contains a solenoid that restricts the air flow through the device's body. Information about temperature and engine load is transmitted to the engine computer, which determines how far the valve should be opened or closed. More air equals higher idle speed. Intro : A graph of your car’s idle speed shouldn’t resemble architectural plans for a new Cedar Point roller coaster. Once the car warms up to normal operating temperature, it should run in a smooth consistent line.

Should your idle develop a nervous quibble, it’s one way your car is telling you that there’s a problem that needs resolving. Idle problems can often, but not always, stem from a failing or clogged idle air control valve, a small part adjacent to the throttle body that does exactly what its name indicates. Fortunately for the garage greasers out there, it’s typically a fairly easy part to access, service, and replace.

To help those who aren’t as grubby as we are, The Drive has put together a helpful, but to-the-point, guide with everything you need to know about idle air control valves. Let’s get to it.

What Is a Car’s Idle?

The idle speed is the speed at which your engine is operating while the car is operating without any throttle inputs. The car’s idle speed is displayed in revolutions per minute (RPM) on the tachometer in the dashboard gauge cluster. Simply put, when you’re in park and start the car, the car is then idling.

What Is a Normal Idle Speed?

The typical consumer car will idle somewhere in the range of 500-1000 RPM, depending on the vehicle. It might also start at a higher RPM, by 100-300 RPM, before dropping down to its normal operating speed. Consult your owner’s manual to find your specific car’s normal speed.

High-strung performance cars may have higher idles, and motorcycles have idles that range between 2,500-4,000 RPM. 

What Is an Idle Air Control Valve? 

There aren’t many car parts that are as accurately named as the idle air control valve. It is a valve or a device that opens and closes to release air or fluid flow (air in this case) into the engine. 

What Is an Idle Air Control Valve’s Job?

The idle air control valve controls the air needed to maintain a steady idle speed. It essentially acts as a bypass of the throttle body plate.

Where Is the Idle Air Control Valve Located? 

The idle air control valve is typically found attached to the throttle body.

Most Common Idle Air Control Valve Issues 

Two common issues can arise in an idle air control valve, clogging and failing, and each requires your adept wrenching hand at fixing. 

Due to the flow of air in and out of the idle air control valve, it’s possible for contaminants to enter the valve chamber. These particles or contaminants could clog, jam, or damage the part’s internals and cause an improperly functioning valve.

If the solenoid inside the idle air control valve fails, the valve no longer receives an electrical signal, or seals wear down, the valve won’t be able to do its job, and the car likely won’t be able to start.

Symptoms Of a Clogged or Bad Idle Air Control Valve

There are several ways your vehicle could tell you its idle air control valve is in trouble. Know, however, that these symptoms are quite general and are not 100% accurate diagnoses. If you inspect, clean, or replace, your valve, the idle issues might persist due to other problems within the engine.

Trouble Starting

If an engine isn’t getting enough air, it might not start or will have difficulty starting. This could indicate an issue with the idle air control valve.

Poor/Rough Idling

When the source of air into the engine is inconsistent, it will create a glugging, hesitating, and revving and dying sound. You’ll know something is up.

Car Starts, Then Dies

If the valve works occasionally, or it only works in certain parts of its cycle, the car might be able to start before it starves of air and dies.

If the engine doesn’t have enough air, the air-to-fuel mixture ratio is off, and some fuel might be left after the spark. This fuel then makes its way through the system and could cause a backfire.

Working on your car can be dangerous and messy, so here’s exactly what you’ll need to ensure you leave the garage in the same condition in which you entered.

• Mechanic gloves
• Safety glasses

Everything You’ll Need To Change the Idle Air Control Valve

We’re not psychic, nor are we snooping through your toolbox or garage, so here’s exactly what you’ll need to get the job done.

• Wrench or ratchet set
• Scraping device or flathead screwdriver
• Philips screwdriver (if necessary)
• New idle air control valve

Organizing your tools and gear so everything is easily reachable will save precious minutes waiting for your handy-dandy child or four-legged helper to bring you the sandpaper or blowtorch. ( You won't need a blowtorch for this job. Please don’t have your kid hand you a blowtorch—Ed .)

You’ll also need a flat workspace, such as a garage floor, driveway, or street parking that’s also well-ventilated. Check your local laws to make sure you’re not violating any codes when using the street because we aren’t getting your ride out of the clink.

Here’s How To Change an Idle Air Control Valve

It’s easy, let’s do this! 

• With the vehicle cooled down in an out-of-the-way spot, pop the hood and locate the idle air control valve. 
• Remove any parts that are in the way of accessing the idle air control valve. 
• Unplug the electrical connector on the idle air control valve. 
• Remove the idle air control valve.
• Remove the gasket and make sure no gunk is left behind. 
• Bolt on the new idle air control valve with a new gasket.
• Reattach the electrical connector. 
• Put any removed parts back in place.

That’s it, let’s hope that was the problem!

This was easy diagnosis and repair, once I figured out where the IAC on my rig was actually located (2000 EB). Symptoms: Tried to start, fired and immediately shut down. Found I could start if I pressed a little on the gas pedal. No service light or codes being thrown off while it was running in this condition. As my two previous vehicles had similar issues over the years (and always in the cold of winter), I was pretty sure this was the IAC. Did a quick search for the IAC location on the 5.4 Triton, and saw pictures that it was out in the open and easily accessible (WRONG). The IAC on my rig is on the Right Hand side of the engine, tucked in under the dash extension, with the bolts facing to the rear right. Takes 8mm socket to get them out (actually, I just loosened them with the socket and then I was able to remove them with finger tips). The electrical connector is behind the rear part of the intake, so I had to feel around to find where to press and release. I was considering trying to clean the existing, but given the effort to put it back in, I just went and bought the BWD aftermarket unit from O'Reilly's (didn't have time to wait for a shipment from Rock or other). It was $45 bucks and came with a new gasket. Went back in easier then expected, as I was able to mate the plug and IAC connector on the first attempt (which was mostly blind given the positioning of the device). After snugging up the two bolts, I cleared the work area and fired it up. Running perfectly again. Hint: put a plastic cap on the fuel rail valve to save your arm skin when working to loosen and tighten the bolts. Hope this helps someone who might have similar issues. Happy New Year's John O.

Update (10-5-19): The replacement IAC failed (sort-of). This time it was just sticky, and it would idle high until the PCM made enough of a change that it reacted (with a fairly sudden change in RPM levels). As it had a lifetime warranty, I went a got a replacement. Removing and replacing was easier than the first time, except it was complicated by the fact I dropped the gasket behind the engine (twice). I thought I could access that area by removing the alternator and reaching in under the manifold. Even at 6'4" with long arms, I just couldn't get to that area. I did retrieve it once from the back, by contorting my arm, but the second time, no dice. The original gasket was in good shape, so I just reused it, and as expected, the problem was resolved with smooth startup and now have gentle changes in the RPM level. Question for the forum: Do I need to worry about the gasket that fell behind the engine? I think I would need to take off the full intake and fuel rail assemblies to get access back to that area, but if there is any risk of a fire, then I would be willing to give it a go (I had to do similar with the daughters 2006 Explorer to change out some simple sensor that Ford had buried under the intake manifold). The idle air control (IAC) valve controls the idle speed of fuel injected vehicles and takes control of engine rotational speed only when your foot is off the accelerator. The idle speed is determined by engine temperature and is controlled by your vehicle's engine control unit. Often the idle air control valve is only in use when the engine is idling and has not yet reached operating temperature, ensuring that the fuel and air mixture is appropriate while the vehicle is warming up. Weilburg, Germany  — December 3,  2019  —  FEIG ELECTRONIC , a leading global supplier of radio frequency identification (RFID) readers and antennas with fifty years of industry experience, announces deployment of the UCODE DNA RFID security and parking contactless identification solution in the Moscow International Business Center, known as Moscow-City, one of the world’s largest business district projects.

The management of Moscow-City not only selected long-range, passive UHF RFID to implement in its controlled parking areas, it also chose to implement UCODE DNA , the highest form of secure RAIN RFID technology, developed by NXP Semiconductors.

“Underscoring NXP’s innovation and leadership in developing advanced RAIN RFID technologies, our UCODE DNA was chosen to be incorporated with the FEIG and ISBC implementation of the contactless identification system in the prestigious Moscow-City,” said Mahdi Mekic, marketing director for RAIN RFID with NXP Semiconductors. “This exciting project represents yet another successful deployment of NXP’s contactless portfolio, and showcases our continued ability to meet the high-security requirements of highly demanding applications without compromising user convenience.”

“UCODE DNA is considered the only identification technology to match the physical protection of a barrier with the cybersecurity necessary to truly protect entrances from unauthorized access,” said Manuel Haertlé, senior product manager for FEIG Electronic. “As a respected contactless payment technology company, FEIG applies security know-how from its payment terminals, which are fully certified according to the latest high-class security standards, into our RFID systems. FEIG vehicle access control RFID readers incorporate advanced secure key storage elements, supporting various methods for secure key injection.”

FEIG’s partner ISBC Group provided the knowledge and support for this successful implementation using  FEIG’s long-range UHF RFID . The resulting system enables authorized vehicle entry into areas reserved for private residential use or corporate tenants, while also allowing availability of temporary, fee-based visitor parking. Thanks to the cryptographic authentication of UCODE DNA, both the tag and reader must go through an authentication procedure before the reader will validate the data from the tag, which is transmitted wirelessly. This level of authentication is typically used in the most secure data communication networks.

“The system’s two-step authentication means that only authorized equipment can handle the secure protocol and the data exchange with the UCODE DNA based tag. Without the required cryptographic secrets, other readers would query the tag in vain, because the tag’s response cannot be interpreted or understood,” said Andrey Krasovskiy, director of the RFID department at ISBC Group. “On top of this, each data exchange in the authentication process is unique, so even if a malicious actor were to intercept the communication, the transmission is only good for a single exchange and the tag’s unique identity is protected from cloning.”

Established in 1992 and still growing, Moscow-City is the revitalization and transformation of an industrial riverfront into a new, modern, vibrant and upscale business and residential district. A mix of residential, hotel, office, retail and entertainment facilities, it is located about four kilometers west of Red Square along the Moscow River. Twelve of the twenty-three planned facilities have already been completed, with seven currently under construction. Six skyscrapers in Moscow-City reach a height of at least 300 meters, including Europe’s tallest building, Federation Tower, which rises more than 100 stories.
