PREVIEW | Tour Down Under 2024 stage 4 - Can Sam Welsford make a hattrick of sprint wins?

Preview . Stage 4 of the Tour Down Under will be another day for the sprinters. The question on the table is quite simple: Can Sam Welsford take the third out of three sprint stages? Or will another fast man take advantage of a possible bad day?

Stage 4 to Port Elliot will also be short and just as suited to the sprinters. There will be very little obstacles to tackle en route to the finish line. A day that can be exposed to the wind as it takes place quite close to the coast and does not feature this time around the rolling terrain of the previous days.

Two for two at Tour Down Under - Sam Welsford wins stage 3 bunch sprint

profile tourdownunder2024stage4

Instead, the first half is pan-flat. We've got Gemmel Hill that summits with 48 kilometers to go however it doesn't pose much of a challenge, and the final third of the day isn't much of an issue profile wise. In the final few hundred meters there will be a fast approach to Port Eliott, a sharp final corner with just a few hundred meters to go means a race up to that point, and then an all-out sprint in the day that suits the fast men the best.

The Weather

PREVIEW | Tour Down Under 2024 stage 4 - Can Sam Welsford make a hattrick of sprint wins?

Some southeastern wind. Hence, we will have a fast day on the bike, as a lot of it will have tailwind and crosswinds. In exposed roads, we will have a day that could have tense moments. This will include the final kilometers where there will be a meaningful cross-tailwind - whilst the finishing straight features a headwind.

The Favourites

Sam Welsford - This will be a third sprint day. It is almost impossible, under the conditions we've been seeing, that we'll have a strong breakaway that can fight for the win. Hence it's all about the fast men, and the fastest of all is Sam Welsford. Now well equipped with a premium leadout, the Australian has succeeded in both finales so far. Will he win a third time? I would say there is a very high chance, as there is no sign that BORA - hansgrohe won't be able to repeat the successful formula they've got.

The competition - Hence this becomes a matter of BORA against the rest. We don't have climbs, a technical finale or anything very specific that can derail their plans. It has to be someone beating the Australian head to head. In the first stage Biniam Girmay looked quite fast, and could perhaps be the main rival if he finds himself in the right spot. Phil Bauhaus packs a very strong punch in a pure sprint, and as Girmay, if he is in the right spot he may be able to strike.

Strong leadout "a big advantage" for Sam Welsford, Australian admits after second Tour Down Under win

The outsiders - Caleb Ewan was sixth today. He's not having the punch. Having been present in three sprints, he has not been able to finish above fourth, so it's safe to say it will be hard for him to contest for the win. For a podium however is very realistic. Today we've gotten Elia Viviani and Dan McLay finishing second and third and will be possibilities to be once again there with the best.

Max Kanter has been consistent and is quite a reliable figure for the sprint. Laurence Pithie, Alvaro Hodeg, Jhonatan Narváez, Emils Liepins and Corbin Strong are other riders to keep an eye out in the final sprint.

Isaac del Toro happy to survive first day in Tour Down Under lead: "Cycling is always full of chaos"

Prediction Tour Down Under 2024 stage 4:

*** Sam Welsford ** Biniam Girmay, Phil Bauhaus * Caleb Ewan, Elia Viviani, Dan McLay, Max Kanter, Jhonatan Narváez

Pick : Sam Welsford

Tour Down Under 2024 route

From Tanunda to Mount Lofty, 824.6km over six stages in South Australia

Overall route of Tour Down Under 2024

The organisers have claimed that the 2024 Santos Tour Down Under will test the cyclists like never before as they race around South Australia. The six-stage WorldTour race begins in Tanunda on Tuesday, January 16 and ends in Mount Lofty on Sunday, January 21, 2024.

The first four race stages should give sprinters and possibly opportunists ample chances to step up and claim victory. Murray Bridge, about an hour south-east of Adelaide, is hosting the start of stage 4, in order to showcase the region as it recovers from recent flooding. Cyclists will cross the mighty Murray under neutral conditions before the day of racing begins.

The last two stages will deliver the toughest final weekend with the ascents of Willunga Hill and Mount Lofty, a first in the history of Tour Down Under. Each iconic Australian climb will be tackled twice over the final two days of racing before the overall winner is decided.

Stage 1 - Tanunda -Tanunda

Profile of stage 1 of 2024 Tour Down Under

Returning to the beautiful Barossa for another blistering sprint stage, riders will tackle three laps of the region, travelling through Seppeltsfield, Greenock, Nuriootpa, Angaston and Tanunda for a total of 144km.

Stage 2 - Norwood - Lobethal

Profile of stage 2 of 2024 Tour Down Under

Starting in Norwood, the 141.6-kilometre stage 2 includes twists and turns across the Adelaide Hills, and ends with three 35-kilometre loops and two ascents of the Fox Creek Climb (1.6km, max 17.8%), a short but super-steep climb set to be a launchpad for multiple attacks to take the win in Lobethal.

Stage 3 - Tea Tree Gully - Campbelltown

Profile of stage 3 of 2024 Tour Down Under

The 145.3-kilometre stage 3 starts in Tea Tree Gully and tackles the first climb almost immediately, Tea Tree Gully Hill before travelling into the Barossa’s eastern edge before a speedy finish down Gorge Road and into Campbelltown.

Stage 4 - Murray Bridge - Port Elliot

Profile of stage 4 of 2024 Tour Down Under

A neutral loop to begin stage 4 at Murray Bridge will see the peloton cross the mighty Murray before pushing east to Langhorne Creek and the only climb of the day, Gemmell Hill near Strathalbyn. The peloton will speed to an uphill finish at Port Elliot towards the ocean on The Strand.

Stage 5 - Christies Beach - Willunga Hill

Profile of stage 5 of 2024 Tour Down Under

Fan favourite Willunga Hill (3km at 7.4%) is back in 2024, climbed not once but twice on the 129.3km stage 5. After a new start location at Christies Beach, riders will make their way around McLaren Vale before two laps of the district. King of the Mountain points on Willunga Hill with its maximum gradient of 15.6 percent are on offer the first time up while the second time up promises a climbers' battle for the stage win.

Stage 6 - Unley - Mount Lofty

Profile of stage 6 of 2024 Tour Down Under

Mount Lofty (1.3km at 7.3%, max. 13.3%) returns for the final day of racing. After leaving Unley, the peloton will tackle the sharp climb to Windy Point (3.8km at 6%, max. 20%) just under four kilometres into the 128.2km stage. The route then continues into the Adelaide Hills for an extended loop through towns including Mylor, Aldgate, Uraidla, Stirling, Crafers and Bridgewater. A first pass of Mount Lofty forms part of this circuit, while the second is set to deliver the stage winner, and perhaps the overall winner.

Le jour de ses 28 ans, Sam Welsford a remporté la 4ᵉ étape du Tour Down Under, sa troisième victoire cette semaine !

19 janvier 2024

Mis à jour le 19 janvier 2024

Benjamin Blériot

Sam Welsford (Bora-Hansgrohe) a remporté la 4ᵉ étape du Tour Down Under.
